Flocculation behaviour of six different dolomite samples, four from the Florida mining district, one from Perry, South Georgia and another from New Jersey was examined using polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a flocculant. The samples were similar in chemical composition, however the porosity of the samples from the Florida mining district was higher than the others. FT-IR, adsorption and surface modification by leaching revealed that flocculation was directly related to the presence of isolated hydroxyl groups on the surface. The adsorption mechanism was believed to be hydrogen bonding of the ether oxygen of PEO with isolated -OH sites on the solid.

The Que River and Hellyer polymetallic massive sulphide ore bodies are located 3 kilometres apart in the Cambrian Mount Read volcanics of Western Tasmania. Both deposits are classic examples of the Kuroko volcanogenic style. Base and precious metal rich hydrothermal solutions rose through a deep fracture system and vented on the sea floor, causing sulphides to accumu- late in adjacent topographic lows. Together the preproduction geological resource is approximately 23 million tonnes at greater than 18% zinc plus lead, with economically significant silver and gold. Exploration by Aberfoyle in the Mount Read volcanics com- menced in 1970. Que River was discovered in 1973 following a comprehensive data review, a regional stream geochemical survey and a helicopter-borne electromagnetic survey. Production began in 1981, and the mine is currently producing 300,000 tonnes per year. The ore is sold to the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Aus- tralasia Ltd mill at Rosebery. Ten years of extensive geological mapping, soil geochemistry, and induced polarisation, combined with continual study of the Que River orebody and its host rocks, formed a strong frame- work for the discovery of the Hellyer deposit, which was found as a result of drilling .a subtle time domain electromagnetic anomaly in 1983. Hellyer is currently being mined at a rate of 250,000 tonnes per year, with the ore being concentrated at Aber- foyle's converted Cleveland tin mill. Treatment of 1 million tonnes per year will begin in early 1989 at a new mill located near the Hellyer site.

Canadian mining research has recently been reinvigorated through a pan-Canadian research strategy driven by the industry, the research community and government departments. These organisations have come together to form the Canada Mining Innovation Council, whose role is to focus and increase mining research in the country. One of the major themes of the organisation is environment; including major research initiatives on energy, tailings and environmental stewardship. Other major initiatives on exploration, mineral extraction and mineral processing will also consider environmental benefits in the research projects they undertake. All the initiatives have their priorities determined principally by the mining and exploration companies, whose first obligation is to determine the long-term research priorities of the industry as a whole, rather than for their individual companies. Only after industry consensus on priorities does the research community become engaged in the implementation of specific projects to address those identified priorities. A goal of the program is to effectively create a virtual mining research laboratory, by engaging all the major research centres in the country. Membership to date includes most of the major mining companies operating in Canada and almost all of the mining-related universities. When only wide-spaced drilling is available, for example at concept, prefeasibility and feasibility stages, properly implemented linear estimation (including ordinary kriging) predicts grade tonnage relationships that are over-smoothed compared to final production estimates (and production). Non-linear estimation and conditional simulation are alternative geostatistical approaches that can provide more reliable estimates of the recoverable tonnage and grade from wide-spaced drilling. Non-linear estimation and conditional simulation have been rarely used on iron ore deposits. However, these techniques have had wide application in other commodities such as gold and base metals. Conditional simulation has been used in the iron ore industry (eg Guibal et al, 1997); however, its use here is outlined as a means of generating non-linear estimates, not just its use for variability and drill spacing analysis. As a rule, regardless of commodity, the decision to use non-linear geostatistics will necessitate increased skills and require more time. This decision must therefore be justified in terms of cost-benefit. Such cost-benefit analysis is not straightforward, and to help an approach for determining when linear estimates are inadequate is presented. Recommend in this paper is a well-established non-linear geostatistical approach, the global ædiscrete Gaussian modelÆ (DGM) of change of support, as a tool to establish whether moving from linear to non-linear estimates will materially improve estimate results. Also discussed is the additional use of DGM as a block model validation tool. One specific factor contributing to the lack of application of non-linear geostatistical methods in iron is the added difficulties that arise when conditional simulation and non-linear estimates are required to reproduce the numerous and often important correlations between variables in iron ore deposits. Consequently, presented in the paper is a synoptic review of non-linear estimation and simulation methodologies applicable to correlated variables.

Two unknown iron ore samples were found by a geologist from Ok Tedi Mining Limited copper, gold and silver mine at an old wharf site dedicated to a 1970s drilling program in Lake Murray in Papua New Guinea (PNG). These iron ore samples could not come from a PNG mine and it was decided that a study should be undertaken to understand their origin. Lake Murray is the largest lake in PNG with a total surface area of 647 km2. It has a high-water 2038 km long convoluted shoreline with seasonal water level changes (Osborne, Kyle and Abramski, 1987) and it is located around 200 km south of the Ok Tedi mine (5°13’25”S, 141°09’37”E). The petrology, mineralogy and chemistry of two Fe samples (Ok Tedi 1 and Ok Tedi 2) included optical microscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis and a comparison with worldwide iron ore deposits. The two rock samples were cut to produce two subsamples: (1) a polished thin section; and (2) a pulp that was used for XRF analysis including major, minor and trace elements. Ok Tedi 1 and Ok Tedi 2 were petrologically and chemically compared to a range of known iron ore samples from Australia, Brazil and South Africa. The petrological study of Ok Tedi 1 indicates that it is composed of granoblastic recrystallised hematite and the overall texture is uniform without any obvious original ‘sedimentary’ texture. Ok Tedi 2 is a ‘specular’ or platy hematite with recrystallised and fused grains. Using both petrological and chemical clues, the two Ok Tedi samples likely originated from the Iron Quadrangle in Brazil.

The iron ore district of Gol-e-Gohar (GEG) is located 60 km south-west of the city of Sirjan, in the Kerman Province of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Six exploration targets have been identified and iron ore has been mined from one area with dry and wet concentrate products sold. Prior to mining commencing in 1999, the proven reserves were estimated at 265 million tonnes (Mt) in 2004 and 40 Mt of 100 Mt overburden has since been mined. Of the six exploration targets, the largest anomaly in the GEG district is Deposit No 3. This paper discusses economic considerations focusing on mine extraction and construction of a concentration and pelletising plant to process ore from Deposit No 3 of GEG. Planned capacity of 10 Mt product (concentrate and pellet) per year is targeted to commence in 2011, and nominal capacity by 2014. The economical evaluation and analysis is one of the most important stages in the feasibility study of mine development. Financial calculations including the provision of financial resources, operation period revenue, loss and profit statement, cash flow, net cash flow, internal rate of return and net present value have been undertaken as part of the feasibility study. The feasibility study operating plan assumes a large open pit mine containing proven reserves of approximately 250 Mt. The feasibility study assumed an economic return of $80 per tonne iron pellet. The economic study determined that Deposit No 3 of GEG can be economically developed by open pit mining followed by magnetite separation and flotation to generate iron concentrate and pellets.

It is challenging to determine the optimal mining strategy to maximise value when a mine plan includes mineralised material which does not meet the full cost of mining but has value exceeding the variable cost of mining (‘marginal material’). Mining too much marginal material dilutes the operation’s head grade and undermines profitability. Conversely, leaving too much metal behind fails to achieve the full value of the endowment. Finding the balance between the two will maximise value delivered from the asset. This dilemma has traditionally been approached by calculating a suite of cut-off grades to define the grade of material that meets economic targets for an orebody (or zone within) and should therefore be included in the mine plan. A problem with this approach is that individual mining blocks within the zone have different costs, value and confidence levels, with each having economic co-dependencies between them. Blocks of identical grade but different mining contexts will have distinctly different economic outcomes. For example: • a block may be a low-grade increment or shell around a higher-grade stope; • a block may be available to be mined when there is spare mining capacity; or • a block may defer access to significantly higher cash flow material. Each of these circumstances would result in different value from the blocks if included as part of the mine plan. Cut-off grades calculated as averages over zones of material, or in isolation from schedule-based information, are missing the entire mining context that determines the ultimate economic outcome of making a mining decision. There are tools and techniques available to address this for open pit mining, however underground mining has different nuances. There are more intricate economic and physical dependencies between potential ore blocks, and importantly, the decision to leave material in situ can be made at any time. The case study in this paper explores a new methodology for underground mining, targeted towards strategic planning applications. It examines whether the economic logic usually applied via cut-off calculations can be implemented in the schedule so that optimal economic decisions can be made on a block-by-block basis, taking into account the mining context of the block, with the objective to maximise asset value. The results of the case study scenarios in Table 1 demonstrate the magnitude of the potential improvement in NPV that can be attained by a block by block valuation approach

With the extensive exploitation and gradual depletion of high-grade copper reserves, the mining industry is paying more and more attention to the hydrometallurgical extraction of copper from lowgrade and arsenic bearing copper ores. Hydrometallurgical processing, such as heap leaching, column leaching and bioleaching, provide a viable alternative to the traditional pyrometallurgy due to its harmony with the environment, moderate capital investment, and low operating costs. However, the slow leaching kinetics of enargite (Cu3AsS4) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) remain problematic for commercial leaching practice. The formation mechanism and the nature of the passivating layers during leaching is still a matter of debate in hydrometallurgical research. In this study, the dissolution mechanism of enargite and chalcopyrite in sulfuric acid solution was investigated using a range of electrochemical and spectroscopic analysis methods. Electrochemical oxidation of enargite demonstrated an obvious passivation region from 500 to 750 mV (Ag/AgCl). The formed passivation film was found a n-type semiconductor behaviour, which is different from the original enargite with a p-type behaviour. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggested that a nonstoichiometric film Cu(3−x)As(1−y)S4 (x>>y) accumulated on the electrode surface, which accounted for the obvious decrease in current density in the passive potential region. For chalcopyrite, three important potentials of 550, 680 and 730 mV which are related to the formation and dissolution of passivation film were observed based on the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and potentiodynamic polarisation. Raman and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra studies of the chalcopyrite electrodes after being treated under these three potentials indicated a metal-deficient sulfide of Cu1−xFe1−yS2 (y>>x) might be responsible for the passivation phenomenon. Hence, it is concluded that the passivation of enargite and chalcopyrite are similar which are caused by metaldeficient sulfide surfaces although the compositions of the metal-deficient sulfide are different.

Continuous improvement in environmental management assists in the achievement of sustainability goals for the mining and processing of minerals. The use of regular internal environmental audits (scored or unscored) which form an integral component of an Environmental Management System (EMS), provide demonstrable evidence of this improvement. The audits described in this paper involve working with site personnel to develop and implement major improvement projects, providing advice on how to improve environmental practices and facilities, and disseminating innovative ideas and practices across the site and to other operations within the same group. Essentially the lead auditor assumes the role of a æskills coachÆ as opposed to a æpolicemanÆ, which is quite often the case for many audits. The audit process has been developed from involvement with a number of major coal mines in the Hunter Valley, where regular internal environmental audits have been undertaken every two to three months, over periods varying from 18 months to five years and more recently, with a metalliferous mine in the Northern Territory. Examples of the benefits of improved environmental performance (driven by the audit process) to sustainable development are provided. The auditing process as described is applicable to metalliferous mines, the processing of mineral ores, coal mines, coal handling and preparation plants, quarries, and oil and gas projects.

The selection of samples for metallurgical test work is generally focused on providing geologically representative samples. One of the major problems experienced with metallurgical test work using drill hole data, is the small sample sets selected for metallurgical testing. Major process and financial decisions are being made from results obtained using snapshot samples. Snapshot samples means that samples are basically selected only by grade and spatial location with the assumption that the rest of the orebody or portion of orebody is similar and will respond metallurgically the same way – ie the assumption is that the mineralogy and lithology are basically the same as the test sample. From the test work, algorithms were usually developed and used to describe throughput and recovery using some explanatory variables including grade (mineral chemistry) and ore hardness. These algorithms were then used in the recovery models to determine tonnes produced and plant throughput. However, the metallurgical parameters are a function of many geological factors including grade, lithology, alteration, mineralogy, spatial relationships and SG. In previous years, the limited mineralogical information available was deemed enough for the metallurgist to make decisions as to how many samples are needed to evaluate the metallurgical performance of the ore during processing, and subsequently the basis for the plant design. If the orebody is consistent and not complex or refractory (thus, relative simple lithology), then only spatial and grade samples will be needed to evaluate the throughput and recovery, so limited mineralogical information may be acceptable. There is now, however, an increasing realisation that the mineralogy and geology change, as do the metallurgical characteristics of the orebody, so limited samples may not be sufficient for effective metallurgical test work.It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the effect correct mineralogical information has on the subsequent metallurgical test work program and process selection using a case study. Factors such as type of rock, rainfall and topography are thought to influence the minerals that ultimately form in various orebodies, with the result that different orebodies often react differently during metallurgical test work programs. It is therefore important to obtain accurate mineralogical and elemental deportment data, which will also indicate where the valuable metal containing minerals are located within the orebody. The better you plan and execute your metallurgical test work program during the early phases, the more accurate the decision-making process will be during the selection phase. Improved integration between geology and metallurgy data gathering (geometallurgy) during early phases will result in more accurate predictions with regard to throughput and recovery during modelling and process. Equipment selection will be considerably simpler in later phases with early planning, with improved mine and process scheduling and subsequent net present value (NPV).

Classification within the Inferred Resource category is based on geological judgement and the balance of extrapolation versus interpolation that the Competent Person is prepared to accept. These resources are typically drilled at spacings well in excess of the geostatistical range and at a density that is non-uniform. In many cases, a substantial proportion of the available data will be historical, and should be considered with more recent data sources. The provision of a robust geological model will increase the confidence in any resource estimate, and should be viewed as a critical component. The definition of Inferred Resources is of great importance to vein gold projects, since Indicated and Measured Resources generally require costly underground development for delineation. Indeed, many gold vein operations possess substantial quantities of Inferred Resources (>75 per cent) in their resource inventory both at project start-up and during production. This contribution explores a number of the key issues when using the Inferred Resource category and presents four recent case studies.

In this paper, an analysis is made of the present situation in the Chinese steel industry and its demand for iron ores. It is shown that the demand for iron ores has been growing substantially with the rapid development of the steel industry all over the world, especially in China. However, the iron ore market is currently in the situation where supply exceeds demand due to the economic crisis, with more investment in mines and less output of steel for several years ahead all over the world. Gigantic pressure is confronting the Chinese steel mills due to the too high and irrational price of iron ores. It is time to return the price of iron ores to a normal position much closer to their value. More attention has therefore been paid to developing low-grade and complex iron ore resources in China due to the irrational price of imported iron ores. More innovative mineral processing processes have been developed to tackle these complex resources. A systematic introduction to the development of beneficiation processes for low-grade iron ores is provided, including upgrading low-grade siderite, limonite, micron sized haematite and magnetite resources.

The scarcity of truck tyres combined with decreases in the availability of labour, increases in fuel costs and a buoyant international economy driving project budget blowouts, have all combined to change the paradigm behind mining equipment selections. The escalation of commodity prices has occurred in parallel with an increasing maturity in continuous mining machinery, mobile in-pit crushing systems and very large-scale conveyor belt systems. This paper will consider the merits of operating continuous materials handling systems, mobile in-pit crushing systems, relocatable crushing systems, relocatable conveyor systems and automated waste handling systems in place of the more conventional approach of truck haulage.

Strategic mine scheduling is an industry best practice for increasing the long-term value of mining operations and supply chains. The application of optimisation technology such as mixed integer linear programming (MILP) is able to achieve a mathematically optimal result for a given scheduling model. Such a model will typically define the available source material, processing options and desired constraints for accessing and processing the material. Most strategic scheduling models, however, do not include a sufficiently detailed model of capital expenditure options related to capacity expansion.Typical strategic schedule models do not include important capital expenditure features such as capacity decay or expiration (limited lifespan of trucks), precedence relationships over time (rail construction before a new plant or non-linear expansions due to economies of scale) or mutually exclusive option sets (choices of plant size). By not including these features, a strategic mine scheduling model for a capital-sensitive operation is unable to be optimised to deliver maximum value or profitability.This paper presents several results of MILP optimisation using advanced capital expenditure modelling for mining operations and supply chains. Results of the study demonstrate that optimising capital expenditure at the same time as optimising the mining schedule allows for minimisation of capital purchasing, optimal timing for those purchases and optimal scheduling around them. The Pasminco Century Mine (PCML) is located 250 kilometres north-north-west of Mt Isa in Queensland. As one of the worldÆs largest zinc mines, PCML comprises mining and milling operations at Lawn Hill, concentrate filtering and shipping facilities at Karumba in the Gulf of Carpentaria, and a 304 km slurry pipeline connecting the two operations.Mineralisation at Century occurs in the upper part of the Lawn Hill formation and is comprised of siltstones, shale and sandstone. Pyrite occurs immediately above the mineralised sequence, and throughout the footwall carbonaceous shale forming the lower proportion of the deposit. Zinc predominantly occurs as sphalerite (ZnS) and lead as galena (PbS). These sulfides are very fine-grained and may oxidise rapidly upon exposure. The pyrite, sphalerite and galena are the main potential sources of acid rock drainage (ARD) or heavy metal leachate at the mine site.To minimise the generation of ARD in the waste rock dumps, they are constructed in a specific manner and waste rock is classified into the following three classes based on competence and acid forming/consuming capabilities:Class 1: Competent rock, non-acid forming or acid-consuming material. Class 2: Non-competent, non-acid forming or acid-consuming material. Class 3: Acid-forming material. The generalised Waste Rock Dump Design for current operations comprises an outer zone of Class 1 material and inner zone with Class 2 and 3 material. Limestone is the Class 1 material used for both its structural support and acid neutralising capacity. Reserves of limestone at the mine site are limited. Net acid generation (NAG) tests confirm that a mix of limestone and shales can be net acid consuming.Field based and laboratory based trials have been established at PCML to quantify blending levels of limestone and shale that will produce leachates both neutral in pH and low in metal/salt concentrations. This paper will discuss the first six months results (of a two-year sampling program) from the trials.

The Jacobs Sliding Floor (Floor) is experiencing a surprisingly long competitive life. The first Floor was used on the Camino Tunnel in California in 1960. At that time the Robbins Company had built only seven TBMs, and the future for such machines was considered doubtful by many, as compared to drill and blast methods. This was then, and still is, commonly called the "conventional" method. Robbins' TBM No. 8 was for the Hydro Electricity Commission of Tasmania (HEC) for their Poatina Hydro Project in 1961. In this writer's view, the Poatina experience was the start of successful hard rock boring machines. But, by coincidence, the HEC is using the newest Floor for their King River Hydro project, where driving with the Floor started in July 1986 on the King Tunnel. This paper examines the history and developments in both Floor design and other "conventional" tunnelling equipment, and the site specific conditions that have allowed this old concept to still be competitive in certain select situations. Parametric costing data and some actual progress records are included.

The Telégrafo copper – gold deposit is located in the Centinela district of the Antofagasta region in northern Chile. Telégrafo is a porphyry copper deposit of Eocene – Oligocene age which has a total mineral resource in measured, indicated and inferred categories equal to 2.6 billion tonnes with an average grade of 0.38 per cent copper.Currently the project is in the prefeasibility study phase, including an infill drilling campaign to improve the knowledge of the deposit that should result in an improvement of the mineral resource classification. In this context was decided to review the classification criteria in order to optimise the drill hole density necessary to support the project.This paper presents an application of conditional simulation to evaluate the risk related to drill hole spacing, using a geostatistical approach that mimics the process of evaluation of resources from the perspective of geological modelling and grade estimation. The first step of the approach is the generation of conditional simulations using the available samples to generate several plausible scenarios of the deposit in terms of copper grades and geological units. These scenarios are considered as the unknown reality of the deposit and sampled by synthetic drill holes in order to replicate the geological model process and copper resource estimation. In this way it is possible to establish differences between the possible scenarios and the generated resource estimation models for several simulated drill hole spacing alternatives. These differences or errors can then be quantified in terms of estimated mean, metal content and tonnage over different production volumes.The resulting errors were useful in assisting the decision making process related to the design of drill hole spacing for each category of mineral resource in the Telégrafo project, and to redistribute the budget associated to the drill campaigns for the next stage of the project.

A risk assessment was undertaken of the aquatic ecosystem and bioaccumulation of metals and metalloids in fish at the Leichhardt River, Mount Isa, Queensland. Residual contamination of metals and metalloids in Leichhardt River sediment was assessed and arose from mine practices using river discharge in the 1940s. The ecological risk assessment of sediments involved comparison of the concentrations of heavy metals and arsenic with those of the ANZECC/ARMCANZ (2000) Interim Sediment Quality Guidelines (ISQG). Results indicated that all sites including the background site exceeded one or both the ISQG-high and ISQG-low trigger values based on total concentrations. A lesser number of sites exceeded the ISQG-low trigger values following the 1 M hydrochloric acid extract step, which was used as an indication of bioavailability. An additional risk from particulate matter in river sediment is that acute human toxicity from the consumption of fish contaminated with metals and metalloids is unlikely. The potential risk was assessed by comparing with the maximum levels set by FSANZ (2010) for fish consumption by children and adults. In general, the liver of the fish have higher heavy metal and metalloid concentrations compared to the muscle. Frequent or regular consumption of fish from the Leichhardt River that exceed maximum levels (ML) of heavy metals and metalloids is not recommended. Risk analysis showed that an adult can consume up to 5 kg of fish fillets every day from fish caught at the man-made Lake Moondarra downstream on Leichhardt River and still be within safe consumption levels whilst a child can eat up to 1 kg daily.CITATION:Noller, B N, Ng, J C, Matanitobua, V, Harris, H H, Zheng, J and Huynh, T, ?2014.
