Seismic tomographic imaging has been applied to determine the blast induced damage zones in bauxite pillars in underground mining. At the retreating stage, when pillar dimensions are reduced from 8 x 8 m to approximately 5 x 5 m, the' seismic tomographies reveal, through measurements of the P-wave velocities which is a measure of the degree of fracturation of the pillar rock mass, the presence of three zones within each pillar. In the external zone, where velocities recorded are below 750 m/s. extensive pillar damage occurs which is attributed to both the growth and coalescence of pre-existing cracks and even the creation of new cracks in the rock mass. This effect is in agreement with literature, when considering the peak particle velocity as a criterion for rock failure in tunnels. In the intermediate zone, where velocities range between 7S0-1000 m/s, damage to a much lesser extent occurs which is due mostly to growth of pre-existing cracks and widening of their apertures. The inner zone, where velocities exceed 1000 m/s, is considered to be unaffected by blasting. Simple remedial measures of low cost, which are based on blasting mechanics are proposed to minimise the blast induced damage zone and consequently the transition zone.

Decline shafts are an attractive option to both new and existing mining operations where there is a need to access an inclined orebody deposit via on-reef development so as to generate a return in the shortest possible time. There are many different technologies that are available to transport men, material and rock in incline shafts. This paper focuses on the applicability of two hoisting technologies for decline shafts, namely endless and direct rope systems. The pros and cons of each system are reviewed. A common concern with direct rope haulage systems is the possibility of generating slack rope during deceleration. This paper illustrates the issues involved in designing a system so as to avoid the possibility of slack rope. In conclusion, the key factors relevant to the selection of endless or direct rope haulages for a particular decline application are reviewed. A common practice in the mining industry is to decompose the planning process into different tasks, so the overall process and specific schedules can be constructed easily. Nevertheless, currently there are some adverse effects, such as not capturing the real value of a project by not taking into account the construction of several underground drifts and general infrastructure. Then the common practice is to compute mining sequence and cut-off grade profiles over the life of the mine without constitutively integrating the development schedule as a means to measure the constructability of a given mine design and sequence. Thus, the investigation summarised in this paper shows a novel, integrative way of treating an underground mine sequence and production schedule while considering drift development scheduling. Moreover, it is thought that, because of this original model, the whole underground production scheduling exercise must concentrate on combining the development and the production scheduling to compute a robust and a feasible production schedule.In order to quantify the effect of the conventional way of viewing the planning, the concept of the building information model (BIM) needs to be used, which was postulated by Charles Eastman and has been used extensively since the late 1970s. BIM takes other aspects of a project into account, considering at the same time the spatial relationships, quantities and properties of building components, but especially some kind of model visualisation, which is the advantage to be incorporated. This paper presents the basis for an optimisation model that allows for defining the sequence of the mining development so that the production plan can be achieved. For this, the model considers the space dimensions, time, pattern or strategy, cost or benefit, precedence and resources available. Tests were performed considering a block caving and sublevel open stoping method. Finally these tests showed the main conclusion, that production sequence changes when the building capacity is considered.

When the Paulsens operation was poised to be placed on care and maintenance, Bill Beament and the rest of the Northern Star Resources (NSR) team capitalised on the opportunity to send the Ashburton region’s only operating gold mine into the record books.A three-stage strategy was devised by NSR to pay off the acquisition and maximise the return from the operation. The first stage was to mine the 55 000 oz mine plan and pay off the cost of the acquisition, then maintain profitable production beyond the seven months and re-establish a mine life. The second stage involved an early commitment to a 220 m long diamond drill drive being placed in the hanging wall of the orebody from which the extensions of the orebody could be further explored, allowing the second stage of the plan to come into effect and extend the mine life by converting Inferred Resources into the mine plan. The third stage of the initial plan was to utilise this drill drive and continue to drill deeper holes beyond the current limit of drilling in the ore zones to extend the orebody and increase the mine’s life.With an ever growing desire to further expand, the young company took on the bold move of establishing its own mining services division. A critical element to the success of this was ensuring that the right people were recruited with the appropriate specialised skill sets.Aligning common goals amongst all NSR team members, from the board and senior management to the work force on site, was critical to integrate the new and driven direction that Paulsens had adopted. It was essential to change the focus and a shift in all employees’ attitudes and values from a mine that was all but down and out, to a site that wanted to be kicking some serious goals.Teaming together a passionate and driven leader with a strong allied workforce was always going to put NSR in the best position possible to make Paulsens the success story that it now is. Rio Tinto Iron Ore is currently working towards finalising comprehensive Native Title land access agreements, which cover all of the current eleven mines and infrastructure owned and operated by the company in Western Australia's Pilbara region. Critically, the agreements represent a mutual commitment to a long-term relationship and address many areas of concern by promoting indigenous enterprise, well-being and regional development opportunities. Our objectives in the process are to obtain the informed consent of the traditional owners for our Pilbara expansions while providing benefits to them in a way which provides lasting and substantial improvements to health, education, housing and real jobs in the mainstream economy.   To facilitate the agreement negotiations, Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) proceeded in 2005 to research and design a specific strategy around Aboriginal relations and local community engagement in the Pilbara. Wherever we operate, Rio Tinto follows a fairly simple formula in working with communities, which is comprehensively aligned to local context.   This presentation provides an overview of Rio Tinto Iron Ore's community engagement strategy in Western Australia's Pilbara region. It will also explore the establishment of regional standards on employment, business development and contracting that have been developed to ensure Indigenous people are engaged in the development of their region and are able to contribute to supporting the growth and development of mining in the area with the expectation that there is prosperity for all. The leaching of gold in alkaline aqueous cyanide solutions may be reduced significantly by the passivation of the gold by a surface layer of polymeric aurocyanide. This passivation of the gold is typically countered by the presence of Pb(+2) species in solution, which may be present as an impurity in the solution, or specifically added for this purpose. The speciation and availability of Pb(+2) in typical cyanide leach solutions is illustrated as a function of pH, and the presence of S(-2), S(+6), Cu(+1) and Ag(+1) species. The probable role of the Pb(+2) species in efficient gold leaching is discussed.

Raise boring is a critical aspect of mining at Xstrata Copper’s Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO). MICO’s internal raise boring department regularly develops ventilation rises, orepasses and stope cut-off rises and reams approximately 2500 m per annum. Developed, trialled and implemented as standard practice over the past two years, procedural changes in constructing the raise bore machine’s foundations have significantly reduced operator exposure to raise boring’s inherent risks of working around open holes and manual handling. An additional cost benefit of this newly-adopted procedure is derived from reducing the likelihood of damaging the machine while de-rigging.When conforming to standard industry raise boring practices, exposure to an open hole begins when the reamer breaks through the concrete pad and ends when it is removed from the hole – a process which, depending on the size of the hole and the raise boring machine, can take up to three days to complete. Although wearing fall restraint equipment, operators working on and around the raise bore machine during de-rigging are continually exposed to the risk of falling from heights. In contrast, MICO’s newly-developed and successfully-implemented presink raise boring system reduces this exposure to a maximum of four hours, regardless of hole size. Exposure to manual handling hazards is also substantially reduced as the presink procedure eliminates manual placement of a 100 kg drill bit under the machine to commence pilot-hole drilling. Outcomes of implementing the presink System at MICO have been so beneficial that it is now standard procedure for all reaming in excess of 1 m diameters.

It is well known in the industry that good classification system performance is vital to efficient ball mill circuit performance. But what is meant by good classification system performance, and how is it achieved? Unfortunately, the perceived complexity of classification systems, and the day-to-day time demands placed on the practicing metallurgist, all too often put the low-hanging fruit of classification system optimisation in the ‘I’ll do it later’ basket. Additionally, lingering confusion about basics such as the relationship between circulating load ratio and ball mill circuit performance makes the optimisation objective seem nebulous to both plant metallurgist and designer.Some of this confusion can be eliminated by taking a step back from the overwhelming detail of sharpness of separation curves, circulating load ratios, cyclone feed pressures, vortex and apex sizes etc, and focusing on the purpose or function of the classification system – to apply mill power to particles that need further size reduction! The classification system efficiency (CSE) metric captures how well the classification system is performing its function with two quick and easy size distribution analyses.Once CSE is understood and implemented as the optimisation criteria, well-tested methods for improving CSE can be implemented and quickly measured at plant scale to give confidence that the right change was made.This paper will describe CSE and how it is measured in practice. Next, a guide for improving CSE through manipulation of design and operating variables in the classification system will be provided. Rarely do opportunities arise allowing closure of a mine site to be planned as a key beneficial land use asset within a new urban growth area; particularly so well prior to cessation of mining.Pit lakes are common mine closure legacies for many open cut mines and may form in open cut mine voids extending below the water table upon closure. Mine closure guidelines increasingly require post-mining land uses of equivalent capacity to premining conditions and that minimise long-term post-mining liabilities and maximise benefits to stakeholders and the environment. However, risks presented by pit lakes are regularly neglected in closure planning or are not able to be addressed to allow beneficial end use of the lake or surrounding land.This paper describes strategic planning initiated by quarry owners ten years before mining ceases. In liaison with the planning agencies, the planned closure of a large 100-year-old limestone quarry pit will form a lake on mine completion, with a well-considered beneficial end use in an urban setting in mind. The quarry pit and adjoining land at Batesford South about the edge of the City of Greater Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Geelong is experiencing growth pressures that necessitate development of a new growth area from about 2025.A multidisciplinary expert team assessed the constraints, opportunities and feasibility of rehabilitating the quarry and pit lake and developing the surrounding land as Geelong’s next urban growth area.The concept is exciting and demonstrates that a former mine site could become a valued home to about 40 000–45 000 people. About 30 per cent of the land will also be developed as an ecological riverine corridor including the pit lake that will become a regionally iconic lake as the centrepiece of an urban development.Our paper outlines technical challenges and how these can be met to achieve closure and beneficial use that meets the social, economic and environmental expectations of contemporary urban planning.CITATION:Gerner, M and McCullough, C?D, 2014. The process of sampling blasthole cones utilising personnel to manually shovel material into sample bags is a long-standing industry accepted process. However, this method has several drawbacks, including the safety issues around having personnel performing manual sampling in a harsh environment and the variability involved in getting a human to repeatedly get a ‘shovel full of dirt’, and make it always representative. Geophysical blasthole sampling, or utilising a Downhole Assaying Tool (DHAT) has been tested and has now begun implementation at many iron ore sites throughout the Pilbara region, Western Australia. This method uses a geophysical tool to capture data within blastholes, and together with a semi-autonomous logging platform to minimise risks around manual handling, delivers a multielement proxy-assay which can be utilised by the mine geology team to accurately domain the orebodies. Logistically, the combination of a specially designed tool and semi-autonomous truck are the way forward for a safer and more data-robust blasthole sampling practice. The method utilises a neutrongenerating geophysical tool and linked elemental spectroscopy sensor, which measures the response of the material surrounding an open hole. This delivers results at submetre intervals. These results are then utilised, similar to blasthole sample results, to map out areas within the blast pattern that are ‘ore’, ‘waste’, or ‘other suitable grade’. This paper outlines a project that has been in ‘proof of concept’ at selected Fortescue sites over the last few years with testing of these tools carried out on reverse circulation (RC), diamond drill and blastholes. The method is now being implemented at operational hematite mine sites. Fundamentally, the method adds more than enough value to justify its implementation. The aim is that these learnings will enable the greater industry to adapt, implement and improve their mining practices. Ultimately, the outcome will be greater value in mining for the industry by having a larger volume of good quality data to make reliable decisions on material movements, minimising ore-loss and dilution, and maximising the value of our current and future orebodies.

To control the airblast from blasting to regulatory limits at environmentally sensitive sites near the Collinsville Coal Mining Operations, it has been necessary for Thiess Mining to incorporate a wavefront reinforcement analysis model in the predictive environmental airblast design. Controlling airblast from cast blasting 70 m high faces with 2000-3000 kg of explosives per hole within 700 m of houses presents a considerable challenge to the blasting personnel. This paper describes the model used and summarises the results of an investigation designed to quantify the increase in airblast indicated by wavefront reinforcement diagrams to further calibrate the model for future prediction.

Rockfalls or significant deterioration of mine openings can have significant safety and financial impacts for mining operations. The failure of drives in underground mines sometimes highlight deficiencies in the mine risk management systems in detecting geotechnical hazards and to prevent events that can have significant impact. Consequences from these failures includes fatalities, injuries, loss of revenue, additional cost, and potentially a loss in Ore Reserves. Where the impacts are severe, it also affects families and communities linked to the operation. The assessment of underground excavations requires consideration of the full range and spectrum of geotechnical hazards, design aspects, ground support, layouts and sequences. Where the assessment of these are insufficient or incorrect, it can result in drive failures. Care must be taken that meeting production targets and personnel pressures do not result in a situation where production take preference over a proper risk-based assessment of the drives to be mined. The risk management approach is now widely accepted in the mining industry for the control and management of risks in underground mines. Codes of Practices (COP’s), Ground Control Management Plans (GCMP), Principal Hazard Management Plans (PHMP’s) and technical guidance documents has become the norm for describing the mines main hazards, risk levels and intimating controls for safe passage of vehicles and mine personnel. However, where there is a disconnect between these documents and what is actually being done at the mine site, the COP’s and/or Management Plans become ineffective (or vice versa). This disconnect may occur due to the actual content of these documents, a lack of resources, or a lack of understanding about the implementation. There is therefore a need for sites to have a documented and implemented risk-based approach for assessing underground mine development. This approach or system needs to identify all hazards and other factors affecting mine development stability early on in the design process, and outline the risk classification and controls required. Cyanide-extractable gold is far more meaningful in the definition of ore, and control of extraction, than fire- assayable or aqua regia digestible gold. The use of cyanide- extractable gold addresses the significant problems of over- as well as under-assaying by fire and aqua regia digests. The problems of conventional control or diagnostic cyanidation extractions: lengthy extraction, and masking by pregrobbing in cyanidation extractions for assay purposes; are surmounted with a novel activator - Leach WELL. Full extraction of liberated gold, insignificantly affected by preg-robbers, can now be achieved within 30 minutes. This can assist in reducing common gold losses presently often hidden by inappropriate mine call factors, and/or high grade cut values. This paper includes a discussion of fundamental mechanisms of cyanidation, preg- and assay-robbing, which underlie the phenomena Involved.

Over the last few years at Glencore’s Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO) mining conditions have become increasingly challenging through lower head grades and higher work indices. MICO has had great success improving operating efficiencies and increasing productivity through focusing on technology, innovation and operational discipline. The recent implementation of the Mine Site Technologies (MST) ImPact System has supported the continued transformation of the MICO operations through improved personnel safety and direct measurement of productivity. The ImPact System has implemented new safety systems such as the heavy vehicle proximity detection system, underground personnel tracking system and emergency evacuation dashboards improving the overall safety of the workforce. The ImPact System has facilitated productivity improvements via real-time equipment and personnel monitoring, and the implementation of exception reporting (personnel productivity), KPI reports and production dashboards, and transparent reports highlighting developing maintenance issues.This paper discusses the components of the ImPact System, the current installation at MICO, and critically analyses the implementation processes and right sizing of the system to meet the needs of the business today and into the future.CITATION:Bullock, J, Kent, D and Wilkinson, M, 2017. The sustainability of mining projects is linked to informed investment decisions based on public reporting of exploration and mineral resource estimation results. In Australia, public reporting guidelines are established by the Joint Ore Reserves Committee reporting code through the JORC Code (2012). Although the assessment of uncertainty in the results reported is a requirement, this is often communicated qualitatively and evaluated subjectively. This can become a liability particularly in the early stages of mining projects when spatial domains of geological interpretation and mineralisation envelopes inform resource estimations’ reliability. A recent review of JORC reports found no reports used quantitative assessments of the geological interpretation or mineral resource estimation envelopes, and 27 per cent of reports did not address the question of quality of geological interpretation. Reports that did address the quality used 19 different terms to communicate quality. This work presents methodologies for quantitative uncertainty assessment and communication and explores how they could be applied in public reporting practice. Quantitative uncertainty reporting would benefit mine planning and financial modelling as they normally assume the geology is 100 per cent right (since no error is reported or only a single deterministic model is provided). The complexity, cost, and additional work of doing a quantitative assessment could hinder a straightforward implementation. This could be overcome if mining companies budget for quantitative uncertainty assessment and associated professional development. A compulsory requirement for the inclusion of uncertainty assessments in public reporting or adopting standardised subjective language would improve industry practice.

Since Jameson Cell flotation technology was first installed in a coal flotation application in 1988/89 at Newlands Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) there have been fundamental improvements to its design which has led to its current status as the leading technology in Australia for fine coal flotation. These improvements, which include key hardware modifications, consist of the re-development of the orifice plate to produce considerable increase in wear life and reduction in power consumption for a given air entrainment and a significant increase in the amount of air that is entrained. Modifications to the downcomer allow maximisation of residence time and air entrainment while changes to the feed and air distribution system allows a reduction in installation cost and a reduction of solids ingress into the air line. Additionally, operational improvements such as the use of recycle to maintain constant flow to the cell feed are discussed. The recent installation at Hail Creek in the Bowen Basin, which consists of three B6000/20 Jameson Cells (6 m diameter bottom-fed distributor with 20 downcomers) will be reviewed as a case study. The latest design and operability of the cells are summarised and compared against one of the original designs at Riverside CHPP also in the Bowen Basin.

Nine case studies are presented to illustrate how risks can be, minimised or quantified during pit optimisation, utilising Whittle Four-D software. Each case study covers a specific problem that has been encountered from a wide variety of pit optimisations. Case A: Maximising profits when the tenement owner is paid a royalty on tonnes processed. Case B: Allocating product prices, rather than a single commodity price during optimisation. Case C: Quantifying processing costs that are affected by penalty elements in the ore. Case D: Exploration expenditures below current pits can be quantified through the use of simulation techniques. Case E: Alternative strategies can be quantified when pits are restricted by tenement boundaries. Case F: Relocation of mine infrastructure that requires large capital expenditures, can be simulated by allocating costs to an area during optimisation. Case G: Evaluating alternative corporate strategies during pit optimisation. Case H: Sensitivity analysis for price, processing cost and mining cost. Case I: Quantifying the advantages of using additional mining capacity during the early periods of mining.

The sixth international symposium on mining with fill nearly coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Jubilee Symposium on Mine Filling. That symposium, held in August 1973 in Mount Isa, in part to commemorate the 80th anniversary of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was the first in what has turned out to be a very successful series of symposia. Subsequent symposia were held in Sudbury, Canada (1978), Lulea, Sweden (1983), Montreal, Canada (1989) and Johannesburg, South Africa (1993). The series of symposia has now become an established part of the mining industry calendar, and it will be interesting to see which country is given the honour, and accepts the challenge, to organise the next symposium. When the chairman of the conference organising committee invited (or was it instructed?) me to prepare and deliver one of the keynote addresses, his request was for me to be in parts historical, controversial, predictive and entertaining. The mix was left to me, with one proviso - that an early pioneer of mine filling in Australia be given due recognition. The chairman of the organising committee alone will be able to determine if I fulfilled the last objective. My success, or otherwise, with the other objectives will have to be judged by my fellow delegates. One way of predicting the future, or some small part of it, is to revisit where we have already been with a view to determining the existence of any trends that may impact on the future. An historical review of filling practice and research, with special emphasis on Australian experience in particular and worldwide in general over the previous 25 years, will enable me to address the historical and predictive objectives.

Open pit mining commenced at Lihir Island in 1997 and is undertaken using a conventional drill, blast, load, haul methodology. Unique challenges at the operation include an active geothermal system, a well-developed advanced argillic blanket in the upper portions of the orebody and high rainfall. Grade control is effective utilising routine blast cone sampling. While this provides ‘just in time’ grade information for mill blending, there are opportunities to improve scheduling of mill feed, based on material classification of clay types and sulfur grades. The nature of the clay can impact on the handling properties while the sulfur grade is an important guide for autoclave blending, required for refractory gold. Drilling below the pit floor introduces hazards from the identified geothermal field. A trial Reverse Circulation (RC) program was implemented with the aim of defining four benches below the active mining bench. A comprehensive risk analysis, including the geothermal environment, was undertaken to design a drill collaring procedure with pressure diversion equipment. Operator exposure was minimised through ‘nil on foot’ principles with the driller located in an onboard cab, utilising remote rod handling. Sampling personnel operate in an elevated platform with access to protective covering. Samples from blastholes and the RC holes are processed at two site laboratories. One provides conventional Au fire assays with additional Infrared Combustion (Leco style) S analysis. The second laboratory collects material classification details from portable XRF (pXRF), near infra-red spectrometry (ASD) and Hardness Indicator Testing (HIT). An existing workflow was updated by the site to deal with the additional samples and ensure production ‘turn around times’ were retained for short-term planning. This required some changes to drying temperatures, compositing and screen sizing for the material classification. All results from the two laboratories are loaded into a centralised acQuire database for estimation into a single block model that informs the 13 week medium term planning (MTP) schedule. This paper describes some of the logistical issues faced when drilling in a geothermal area. It also discusses the selection and commissioning Quality Assurance of the sampling equipment and drill rig. Integration of the resulting assay data with existing resource models is also explained.

Seismic systems are a tool for the monitoring and forecasting the rock mass response to excavation. Common issues encountered at mine site audits and reviews are: how to design an effective seismic system, implementation of the design, interpretation of seismic source results and understanding the reliability of the seismic source. These issues are often a function of several items including: • Experience of site personnel in undertaking seismic system design. • Personnel not envisioning multiple phases of system expansion to understand system robustness issues. • System design/expansion occurring in response to damaging seismic activity rather than planned expansion of a system • The mine access development is often localised in comparison to the total orebody being mined hence, planning sensors in longholes in advance of development rather than in short holes close to development will improve the three-dimensional aspect of the network. • Limited site processing of the seismic event data, hence engineers do not see the uncertainty associated with event location, size, source and system layout. Mine site users require a framework to appreciate the challenges and limitations in locating large events. For example, event locations are given as precise measurements (to the nearest centimetre) whereas the volume of deformation resulting in the event often has dimensions of tens of metres or more (as defined by the source radius). A stronger awareness of the uncertainty of rock mass yield within large seismic sources will assist site users in the interpretation of rock mass damage. The encountered design and implementation errors are reviewed and discussed with a practical set of rules presented to provide a robust seismic system that provides consistent results and increases the user’s understanding of uncertainty in source location and size. The authors’ experience across multiple mine sites, seismic systems and damaging seismic events over a 30 year period has been summarised into practical rules for site personnel of all experience levels.
