With the sinking of the No. 3 Shaft at North Broken Hill Limited, it was necessary to construct adjacent to the shaft a new changehouse for mining and surface personnel.It was also probable that as the older sections of the North and British leases were worked out, all employees at present working in these sections would be transferred to the No. 3 Shaft area. This could ultimately result in all personnel employed by North Broken Hill Limited being concentrated in this area, requiring the construction of new administration offices, workshops, mine store, etc., also in this area.

The Burdekin Basin in the Townsville hinterland is an intracratonic extensional basin which contains up to 4500 m of marine and continental siliciclastics and carbonates. The basin sequence is recognised as having accumulated during five major episodes of deposition. Facies analyses of these show that each consists of one or more transgressive or regressive phases. Each episode led to the accumulation of thick sequences in several half-grabens in a transtensional back-arc setting. The depositional episodes can be recognised in comparable sequences in the Broken River Province to the west and Drummond Basin to the south.An Early Devonian episode resulted in the deposi-tion of dominantly marine facies, currently mapped as Fanning River Group, in the northern part of the Burdekin Basin. Two transgressive phases are recorded there, firstly in the Pragian, then later in the late Emsian to early Eifelian. A Middle Devonian episode is represented by dominantly marine facies of the Fanning River Group, representing the peak of a widespread late Eifelian to Givetian transgressive phase. A Late Devonian episode is characterised by continental facies of the Dotswood Group. Deposition occurred during a major regressive phase in response to regional uplift of surrounding areas, and the onset of acid-intermediate volcanism to the south. A Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous episode followed, which was a period of alternating marine transgressions and non-marine regressions that resulted in the deposition of the Keelbottom Group. A final Early Carboniferous episode, marked by the deposition of calc-alkaline volcanics and non-marine faciesòof the Glenrock Group, was a direct outcome of Early Carboniferous subduction further to the east. Compression of the basin followed in the Late Carboniferous, resulting in folding and reactivation of basement faults.

The authors often see problems on mine sites that are due to insufficient feedback between technical discipline silos as the realities on the ground fail to inform the models and plans used to drive resource exploitation. Resource modelling, reserve definition, life-of-mine planning, short-term mine planning and scheduling, mine operations and beneficiation operations are all processes that inform each other, but in many instances feedback between these processes occurs in an ad hoc way and only after problems have come to light.Universal reconciliation uses a multidisciplinary approach across the entire mining value chain to identify both opportunity and loss of value and to maximise operational performance. This paper will look at the operational effectiveness of universal reconciliation and will outline the important elements that make it successful, including how to map out the detail underpinning modelling, planning and execution processes. We do this by documenting the physical processes, logical work practices, organisational roles and responsibilities, data origin and quality, working assumptions and information management practices at an operation. The results quickly show how misinformation and assumption causes suboptimal decisions to be taken, where inefficiencies exist and what the opportunity is to remedy these issues.A universal reconciliation study opens up an opportunity for stakeholders to reassess how the operation should be run and how operational effectiveness should be measured. Clear envelopes for reconciliation become obvious and questions about the practicality and data quality can be addressed.A reconciliation code of practice is a key element of a successful universal reconciliation project and the authors outline the important aspects that will provide an operating model, showing the effectiveness of the resource and reserve modelling, the practicality of the mine planning and scheduling practices, how well the mine operations team are executing these schedules and how effective the processing area is given what it is fed. Most importantly, a system that allows operations time to react before the losses become systemic and that is based on identifying early warnings from hard data when these processes start to wobble is outlined. The results of a study on the flotation of baddeleyite and associate minerals are presented, together with effective flotation reagents. Detailed microcrystallomorphological analysis of the benefication products were made to find out the features of distribution of different baddeleyite generations between froth and chamber products. To reveal the dynamics of interaction of technological properties of minerals with their morphology and constitution, a method of onthogenetic analysis was used. It is well known that the difference between technological properties of the particles of the same mineral depend greatly on its genesis, but also the relation is direct - by means of constitution (habit). Thus, flotation behaviour of minerals depends on morphology microinclusions, distribution of impurities, dislocations and physical properties of individual particles. The microrelief of baddeleyite grains and crystals from froth and chamber products was studied with an electron scanning microscope. Chemical composition was determined by means of laser, microprobe and chemical analyses. The difference between baddeleyite generations, their distribution in benefication products, and the effects of grain sizes, number of inclusions and chemical compositions were valuated. Conclusions on baddeleyite flotation properties were made. Mineralogical study on eudialite grains from rough ore and eudialite concentrate was carried out. The interrelation between eudialite and associate minerals and negative effect of aegirine on technological properties of eudialite were revealed as well.

The Mae Moh coal deposit was discovered some 60 years ago by villagers who noticed spontaneous combustion of coal outcrops. The first production began in the 1950's to fuel a fertilizer plant and a 12.5MW power station. During the period 1976 to 1979, three 75MW power station units were constructed on site. These have a total daily coal consumption of some 5000 tonnes and are served by a stockyard of approximately 60 000 tonnes total capacity. Stacked coal is reclaimed by means of a front end loader onto reclaim conveyors. During the years 1983 to 1986 four 150MW power station units were constructed east of the eastern seam subcrop, sons 2 km from the original power station complex. These have a daily coal consumption of nearly 12000 tonnes and are served by a stockyard of total capacity 270000 tonnes, equipped with two stackers and two bucket-wheel reclaimers for a totally mechanised system.

The authors challenge the traditional thinking that whole ore cyanidation followed by Carbon in Pulp (CIP) or Carbon in Leach (CIL) should be applied as a standard process in the majority of gold processing flow sheets. The concept of whole ore leaching by using cyanide can result in unnecessary environmental and capital risk. Alternative, currently available technologies can be used to provide the desired level of gold recovery at a much lower installed cost and less impact on the environment. Gravity concentration, alone or in conjunction with flotation, can produce a gold bearing concentrate that can then be fed directly to a batch or continuous intensive cyanidation unit. The In-line Leach Reactor (ILR) is an intensive cyanidation unit developed by Gekko Systems of Australia. Advantages of this technology include significantly reduced capital outlays for greenfield plants or plant upgrades and increased investor returns. Reduction of onsite cyanide and carbon inventories improves plant safety, materials handling and site security. By using direct electrowinning to treat the gold bearing solutions produced by the ILR, the need for a conventional carbon stripping circuit is removed. Potential also exists to increase grind size û saving energy, further reducing capital and operating costs and decreasing the environmental impact of a mill. Detoxification of cyanide before the release of solution to the tailings dam can minimise tailings disposal and containment requirements. When used in the right application the proposed process will have little or no impact on gold recovery and may actually increase recovery for complex ores. Areas applicable to this type of treatment include: plants in environmentally sensitive regions, lower tonnage higher grade deposits, coarse gold deposits, and preg robbing ores û some of which may not currently be economically feasible using standard processes and flow sheets. We have provided two examples of such projects, where an alternative to whole ore leach and CIP or CIL has the potential to deliver these benefits.

"Automated mining systems are increasingly being seen as a key requirement for a productive mining operation in the future. The importance of an integrated communication network infrastructure to support such systems is growing.This paper outlines the introduction of automated mining systems in large conventional mines as well as their growing role in block cave mines currently operating or being developed. The paper will then focus on a case study of how the communication infrastructure is fundamental to the operation of such systems and explain why the resultant communication networks require much more than just increased bandwidth (data capacity) to properly support the automation system within the overall mine operation.Mining operations already embarking down this road are discovering that the required network must be based on a true enterprise level architecture to not only enable the mine’s current plans for remote and automated mining, but also provide a scalable and integrated platform for future developments and requirements. The emerging issues for the communication network to truly support automation systems include: increased complexities of operating and maintaining multiple networks integration issues with disparate systems problems with reporting particularly as demands for corporate reporting and compatibility with enterprise systems become the norm ongoing management challenges, which will only increase with the proliferation of new technologies.The paper will explore how certain mining operations are addressing this by adopting a long-term strategy for automation deployment, which includes laying the necessary foundation architecture to meet their current requirements, while supporting their future visions for the fully automated mine.CITATION:Paine, R and Kent, D, 2014. This paper summarises the findings of 27 model-scale bench blasts in magnetic mortar, which were conducted from 2011 to 2014 at the blasting site of the Montanuniversitaet Leoben.The aim of the study was the investigation of the influence of blasthole delay times in small-scale bench blasts on the face characteristics and cracking damage created in the surrounding rock, which affects the fragmentation in subsequent rows.The test specimens or blocks, which were produced out of magnetite concrete, were roughly 1:100 in scale to normal bench blasts. The confinement of the testing blocks at the sides and back ensured the similarity to normal bench blasts with regard to the wave transmission into the surrounding rock. The specimen contained three or four rows with five blastholes each and were shot row by row, with virgin (undamaged) material in row 1 and increasingly damaged or preconditioned material in the following rows.The tested delay times varied between 0, 28, 73 and 140 µs, which corresponds to 0, 0.4, 1.0 and 2.0 ms/m of burden.The evaluation of the material properties showed that the use of magnetite concrete eliminated the inhomogeneous behaviour of rock, but some unexpected differences of the individual production cycles were still detected.The characteristics of the bench after each blast was evaluated along three horizontal lines out of a 3D model of the bench face. The tested delay time sequences of the virgin (first row) and single preconditioned blasts (second row) produced more overbreak for longer delays, while the third-row shots resulted in a smoothened surface independent of the chosen delay.The introduced damage after every blast was evaluated by an observation of irregularities on the newly blasted bench face. The visible cracks at the top of the testing blocks were documented and divided into several crack families according to their angle, length and origin. The remaining block was broken out of the blasting site after blasting, cut into several horizontal and vertical slices and dye penetrant spray was used to visualise the cracks created. Some of the detected crack families showed an influence of the delay time. The calculated mean crack density and mean crack intersection density showed that longer delays resulted in a higher degree of damage.The fragmentation results were well reproduced by the basic three-parameter Swebrec function. The observed improvement of fragmentation in the second- and third-row blasts was linked to the preconditioning of the burden for the following row while blasting the actual row. With the exception of the simultaneously initiated blastholes, the blasts showed coarser fragmentation for the shortest delays, while the longest delays generated the finest fragmentation.CITATION:Schimek, P, Ouchterlony, F and Moser, P, 2015. Spent Pot Lining (SPL) is an unavoidable waste product of the electrolytic process in the smelting of aluminium. SPL is considered to be a hazardous waste in various countries because it contains significant quantities of absorbed fluoride along with traces of cyanide. The disposal of SPL has been primarily in landfill because of difficulties in the development of a successful techno-economic SPL treatment process. Increasing concern about SPL landfilling practices is resulting in regulations in some countries to ban this form of disposal. As a consequence stock piling of SPL is occurring in an increasing number of countries pending the development of a successful treatment process. In 1992 Portland Aluminium investigated a SPL treatment process based on pyrometallurgical technology and approached a company called Ausmelt in Dandenong, Victoria, Australia, to ascertain if their submerged lance technology furnace process would be suitable to treat SPL. This approach resulted in Portland Aluminium, Alcoa and Ausmelt personnel working together on trials during 1992 - 1994 in Ausmelt's demonstration furnace to produce a slag and off gases containing hydrogen and sodium fluoride. The trials also evaluated the effect of oxygen enrichment to increase the concentration of hydrogen fluoride and the ability to recycle sodium fluoride particulate produced as the furnace off gases cooled. Other separate developmental work by Portland Aluminium, using CSIRO, resulted in the production of aluminium fluoride from the offgases from the pyrometallurgical process. The results of these projects influenced Portland Aluminium and Alcoa to authorise up to $A26 400 000 in December 1995 to construct a Research and Development processing facility to treat SPL at Portland. The Portland Aluminium unique gas treatment process converts hydrogen fluoride in the furnace offgases to aluminium fluoride in a multistage fluidised bed reactor, designed by Portland Aluminium. The aluminium fluoride produced in the reactor has been trialed successfully in Alcoa's aluminium smelting process as a replacement for imported aluminium fluoride. The installation in mid-2001 of a slag granulation system has enabled the production of a granulated vitreous slag having leachability qualities that conform to Victorian EPA criteria for the unrestricted use of the granulated vitreous slag from 'The Alcoa Portland SPL Process'. The unrestricted use of the granulated slag successfully completes 'The Alcoa Portland SPL Process' which treats the hazardous waste material SPL and converts it into non hazardous useful products.

The population and the per capila consumption of mineral resources have both grown dramatically during the century past. It is argued that growth will continue through the century ahead but that the magnitudes of undiscovered resources are probably adequate to meet demands. The challenge that the mineral explorer of the future will face is finding deposits beneath several kilometres of barren rock.It is further argued that the principal challenge that society will face in the century ahead is the amelioration of environmental stress.

Narrowly sized samples of synthetic chalcocite (Cu2S) and covellite (CuS) were leached in oxygenated acidic sulphate-chloride solutions. Chalcocite leaches via a two-stage process, the first stage being much more rapid than the second. The apparent activation energies are 42.7 kJ/mol and 68.2 kJ/mol respectively, indicating that both stages are controlled by surface chemical reactions. The leaching of covellite is also chemically rate limited with an apparent activation energy of 77.0 kJ/mol. The shrinking core model is able to be used to describe the leaching processes of both copper sulphides. Over 97% of copper present in chalcocite dissolved in 0.5 M H2SO4i0.5 M NaCl solution under one atmosphere pressure of oxygen at 85¦C in three hours from particles 36 pm in diameter while only 85% of the contained copper in covellite particles 13 pm in diameter dissolved in the same solution under the same pressure at 90¦C in six hours. About 99% of the sulphide sulphur in chalcocite was oxidised to elemental sulphur while only 90% of sulphide sulphur was converted to elemental sulphur during covellite leaching. The mechanism proposed for the two-stage leaching of chalcocite particles is as follows: in the first stage, cuprous ions rapidly diffuse to the external reaction surface where they lose electrons and go into solution as a complex cupric chloride ion CuCl'. The second leaching stage begins when covellite is formed at the external surface. Copper again goes into solution as the CuCl* ion. The mechanism for leaching synthetic covellite is similar to the second leaching stage for chalcocite except that the leaching rate of synthetic covellite is substantially lower than that of the newly formed 'covellite'. Elemental sulphur formed on the particle surface retards the dissolution processes during both chalcocite and covellite leaching. The presence of chloride ions is necessary if essentially all of the copper from chalcocite is to go into solution. When no chloride ions were present, the leaching rate of both newly formed and synthetic covellite was almost zero. The main role of chloride ions in both chalcocite and covellite leaching appears to be to disrupt the passivation film of sulphur on the particle surface.

"Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) has an extensive history in the application of geometallurgy to the iron ore value chain. Fundamental to this has been the geological logging of material types which are assigned processing attributes such as lump per cent and density. Initially these were used for product (lump and fines) grade predictions in relation to grade blocks to be used within short-term planning horizons.More recently the predictive reach of the material types and their associated processing attributes has been extended due to their inclusion into geological block models. These predictions can now be used to influence mine plans across multiple planning horizons in such a way that the extremes of geometallurgical properties can be pre-empted and managed thus improving efficiency. Spatial material type domains are also used in the planning of metallurgical drill holes to ensure greater representivity of material than was typically obtained by chemical and/or stratigraphic criteria alone.Material type logging has also been enhanced by the introduction of modern, rapid mineralogical techniques that have complemented visual logging. This has enabled the identification and quantification of contaminant minerals and their relationships with host ore types to be established. This data is used to better manage product grade predictions and identify risks to the short-term plan.Work is ongoing in RTIO to further refine logging based predictions and in addition apply them to new areas of the business. GEOSCAN on belt analysers have been widely utilised in iron ore for nearly two decades. Since the first installations in 2003, the availability of accurate and reliable grade data has become standardised across iron ore mines in the Northern Cape in South Africa, where various streams are monitored continuously to ensure the optimal functioning of plants. Assmang Khumani has been at the forefront of technology adoption, and has implemented 19 GEOSCANs at various locations throughout the plant, monitoring run-of-mine, stockyard feed, beneficiation plant feeds, and products. Over the years, collaborative advances in the technology have allowed for numerous benefits and gains to be made. In recent times, there has been a concerted effort on the development of analysis for phosphorus in the material flows, and based on Scantech’s experience in the phosphate industry, this element has now been calibrated to achieve statistically acceptable and repeatable accuracies for real time analysis of this element on many of Khumani’s GEOSCAN analysers. This paper provides an overview of GEOSCAN use at Khumani, while focusing on the development of phosphorus analysis. A case study of analysis results is presented for a range of analysers that have been calibrated for this element, as well as a discussion on the benefits obtained as a result of this analysis.

Mineral processing is at the hub of the exploration-mining-metals production system. Because of the large volumes of material processed, incremental technology investments can pay off better than for other parts of the system. However, much of mineral processing remains a 'black art', because we are behind in investing in modem technologies. Consequently, we have one of the best opportunities to improve efficiency and competitiveness through the application and transfer of technologies that have already been developed for other industries. The reluctance of minerals companies to place priority in our area is not because we lack new ideas; our senior management has not been convinced, based on our previous results, that such investments will pay off as well as other investment opportunities competing for the same resources. The key is the proper establishment of technology strategy and more effective transfer of technology. The presentation will identify the failure mechanisms of technology transfer and will present a model for improving the success rate, a prerequisite for raising the priority of mineral processing investment. Topics emphasised include strategy formulation, human resources planning, and total quality management principles applied to improving technology transfer.

This study relates to the spongillite deposits from the region of Jopo Pinheiro, in the north-west of the State of Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil. The deposits occur in shallow ponds (with a maximum depth of 3.5 m) on a karstic planation surface developed on rocks of the Spo Francisco Neoproterozoic Supergroup. Cenozoic detritic covers are associated with this surface. The field study of spongillite deposits from the Preguita and Avipo deposits revealed sedimentological and pedological similarities between the different deposits. They have a lenticular shape and contain different layers of sedimentary spicules intercalated with layers of quartz sand and clay minerals. Representative samples from the different layers investigated by X-ray diffraction, differential and gravimetric thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy showed a range from three to 80 per cent of amorphous silica (opal) corresponding mostly to the sponge spicules in the sediments. Optical microscopic investigation determined that the spicules predominantly belong to the sponge Metania spinata. This species is represented by smooth megascleres (alpha type), prickly megascleres (beta type) measuring 240 to 450 mm in length, as well as the spiny microscleres; whereby the smooth megascleres are larger and thinner. The morphological variation of the spicules as well as the presence of more fragmented spicules towards the base of the deposits, portray a variation in texture and in the state of their preservation along the profile, suggesting environmental variations at the time of their formation and deposition.

Stope filling practice on the Great Boulder Mine was described in -a paper published in Aus.I.M.M., Proceedings No. 137, in 1945. When the paper was presented the process had emerged from the experimental stage, most of the initial operating difficulties had been overcome, and it had been established that this method of filling was suitable for the working of ore bodies in the Kalgoorlie field: Since 1945, it has fulfilled its early promise, -and during 1947, the tonnage of fill placed was sufficient to cover current operating requirements as called for by the mine ore breaking programme. The object of this paper is to outline current operations. In so doing it will refer' to some ground covered by the previous paper, but will omit details of the initial experimental work. It will include, however, a description of further experimental work on the use of hydraulic filling for worked-out shrinkage stopes, arid will provide more accurate data on costs than were available previously.ESTIMATE OF TONNAGE OF FILL REQUIRED.Early in 1946, the mine ore reserves were analysed in order to estimate the relative tonnages to be mined per four-weekly period by shrinkage stope methods -and by cut and fill stope methods respectively. This analysis was extended beyond the blocks already prepared for stoping, and inclqded the majority of the major ore blocks in the mine ore reserves. It gave the following results:-For a mill tonnage of 28,000 tons per period, 6,933 tons were required from cut and fill stopes, and a possible future maximum programme of 35,000 tons per period would require...

Hydraulic backfill is generally retained in slopes using permeable barricades. Mitchell et a! (1975), Mitchell (1992) and Grice (1989) have shown that under normal drainage conditions, barricades experience low levels of loading. Cowling et a! (1988) have also shown that barricades are susceptible to piping failures if excess water has ponded on the upper backfill surface and if leakage of backfill from the barricades has occurred. During 1997, six hydraulic backfill barricades failed in four different Australian mines. Fortunately, in each case, the quantity of backfill slurry released was small, and no injuries to personnel nor damage occurred. Detailed investigation of two of the incidents showed that the primary cause of failure could be attributed to the delivery of excess quantities of transport water from the low-density slurry. For each of the incidents investigated there was evidence of the development of piping failures, which resulted in hydrostatic loading conditions on the barricades from the ponded water on the upper backfill surface. The circular failure surfaces in the barricades were characteristic of the application of point loading Conditions.

"Sustainable development has become an issue of ever increasing importance to the mining industry. The Ernst & Young (EY) mining industry risk radar regularly shows several sustainability elements in the top ten risks, with social license the number three risk in the 2014/15 survey. This is supported by the Fraser Institute survey results of 2013 showing that 36 per cent of responding companies indicated public opposition had affected their permitting and approvals process.Addressing these issues in a strategic way across a mining business that is then translatable to actions at operational level has remained an elusive goal in the industry. In addition the environment and community issues are commonly viewed as somewhat separate from financial and production issues and as a compliance cost rather than a value add. In their Harvard Business Review paper of 2011, ‘Creating Shared Value’, Porter and Kramer outline changes in thinking required for companies to improve their business sustainably through considering the societal issues impacted by their operations and products. Along the lines of ‘doing more with less’ companies’ value chains can be redefined to reduce energy, transport, water or other resource usage leaving additional resource for societal usage and/or reducing environmental impacts. This paper explores the linking of the holistic Five Capitals-based approach with the creating shared value (CSV) concept to help businesses unleash the benefits of innovation. Previous papers have demonstrated the potential for Five Capitals approach to create strategic value through sustainable development. Building on previous work, this paper provides an overview of the current status of holistic approaches to mine management and presents the application of the CSV concept on an African mine currently undertaking capitals-based strategic planning.
