To effectively plan for closure, we must have an end-point in mind. To undertake meaningful rehabilitation, a post-mine land use (or uses) must be known. However, it is becoming more apparent that the end-point or “goal-posts” are shifting - and may continue to do so throughout the life of a mine. As well as being safe, stable and not causing environmental harm, post-mine land uses should always be sustainable, achievable within the given land capability, and they should involve stakeholders in their design and development.The majority of mines in Australia, and around the World, were historically expected to return disturbed land to either native ecosystem or agriculture/forestry practices. However, examples of highly successful final land uses suggest that today’s focus on closure includes not only minimising future liability and impact but also – and importantly – a move towards the creation of economic opportunity (Murphy and Heyes, 2016).CITATION:Durbin, J, 2018. Excavation by tunnel boring machines (TBMs) offers many advantages over conventional excavation methods, in terms of safety level, working environment, advance rate and overall cost. While TBMs have been extensively used in civil tunnel construction, they are also viewed as a competitive alternative to the drill-and-blast method for underground mining, attracting increasing attention from the mining industry. This paper presents an overview and general assessment on applications of TBMs in mines, by reviewing more than 60 TBM applications in underground/open pit coal and hard rock mines around the world. The projects range from the early exploratory trials of TBMs in mines in Germany, England, South Africa and America in the 1960s and 1970s, to the ongoing projects in Australia, China and Chile. The paper focuses on the geological compatibilities, the problems encountered, the solutions undertaken and the lessons learned from those projects. The paper summarises the progress made in the past and highlights the challenges faced by TBMs in mining due to complex ground conditions and geometrical requirements. This paper presents the findings from an experimental study of the effects of shock and gas penetration breakage mechanisms in rick blasting. A blasthole liner method, which realistically seperated these two basic sources of energy in blasting, was developed and utilized. The use of four different explosives with contrasting detonation behaviour produced a wide variation in the nature of explosive energy transfer to the rock. Through extensive field experiments it was found that, relative to low VOD dynamite, the high VOD emulsion imparted greater shock to the rock and therefore produced finer fragmentation and greater back damage. The comparatively lower heave energy of the emulsion caused less immediate blast results were obtained with watergel and ANFO explosives, which have detonation behaviour and energy partitioning charecteristics lying between emulsions and dynamite.

Copper and Gold mineralisation at the Ernest Henry deposit is bound by two controlling shears along the hanging wall and footwall margins. The shear zone geometries have been influenced by a large diorite intrusion, dated at ca. 1660 Ma, which lies to the north-east and south-west of the main orebody. The shear zones, which partitioned strain prior to the main mineralising event ca. 1514–1504 Ma, and in conjunction with adjacent regional structures, have been a critical factor in the deposit location and geometry. Conventional exploration techniques have been utilised proximal to the current deposit since the initial discovery in order to expand upon known resources, with limited success. However, new geomechanical modelling techniques have now been employed to target structurally controlled mineralised zones in three dimensions. The main aim of the geomechanical modelling was to simulate the effects of regional deformation events to highlight areas of anomalous strain, which indicate areas with a higher likelihood of fluid focusing and mineralisation potential. This project was focused on testing the latter stages of a D3 event (NE-SW compression) to examine preconditioning of the system, and a D4 event (SE-NW compression) which have ultimately been responsible for the current location of the mineralisation.CITATION:McLellan, J G and Miller, B, 2017. Circuits with unconventional and potentially more complex designs are predicted to become more common in the future as plant designers and operators look to process ores more efficiently. Ideas have been presented on how circuit design may be changed to utilise todayÆs technology to address tomorrowÆs challenges (Powell and Bye, 2009; Powell, Benzer and Mainza, 2011a). High pressure grinding roll (HPGR) installations in various configurations; application of preconcentration plants eg sorting, magnetic or gravity separation; and preweakening devices eg microwave processing; are all examples of technologies having the potential to deliver a significant reduction in comminution energy for ores amenable to these processes. Not only will future novel circuits contain equipment for which models are not as well developed (if at all), many will likely require the ability to respond to variations in feed, and interact with geometallurgical models requiring process adjustments when the ore characteristics change.In order to confidently simulate more complex circuits and accommodate variations in feed type, a significant advancement in modelling and simulation capability is required. This includes dealing with multiple components in the feed, accommodating different competencies of ore, utilising physical separation opportunities and tracking the grade reporting along the different potential processing routes. Developing the means to simulate complex circuits has been a key priority of a collaborative group of comminution researchers working to solve these challenges.Simulations are presented utilising a new configurable simulation interface called the model developers kit (MDK). The MDK is designed to accommodate multi-components and incorporate new models under development. BHP Billiton Olympic Dam produces copper cathode, uranium oxide concentrate and refined gold and silver. The operation is comprised of an underground Mine and Processing Plant and is located 560 km north of Adelaide. Water for the operation is sourced from two wellfields located 120 and 200 km from the operation in the Great Artesian Basin (GAB) at a rate of approximately 36 ML/d. Regulatory drawdown limits were established to protect regional GAB springs and are monitored at compliance bores. Drawdown was predicted in the æOlympic Dam Environmental Impact StudyÆ (Kinhill, 1997); however, pumping at higher volumes may have the potential for increased drawdown resulting in a trend towards the compliance limits. In recent years increased usage of water in the Concentrator and Hydromet sections of the Processing Plant has caused excess process water reporting to the Tailings Retention System (TRS). This has resulted in excessive amounts of liquor ponding on the tailings cells with a potential impact being contamination due to seepage of liquor to groundwater. Effective management of water by the operation is necessary to both reduce GAB drawdown and reduce the amount of liquor on the tailings cells. A site working-group has been established to investigate and pursue opportunities to improve the water use efficiency of the operation. This paper will highlight the issue of water management at Olympic Dam and discuss the various options currently being investigated to improve management of this important resource.

This paper aims to address the issue of the public's image of the extractive minerals industry. What is it about the industry that incites such negative feelings and are they justified? Are we really the 'rapists of the land' that many would have us believe? Has the industry really not improved since the old gold boom days?   I believe that the fundamental cause for the public's view is lack of knowledge and understanding of the industry as a result of the dislocation of the end production from its source. There are few people who look at a house, car, record, toilet, tooth-brush, bottle of coke or pair of glasses and see the mine site that supplied the source material. But the mine site and its products should be inseparably linked. This is one area where we should be educating the public û it is all very well being anti-development but the population as a whole is not really prepared to live without its 'mineral'-derived necessities. It is very easy to say that we do not want minerals development in New Zealand but are we prepared to live with the consequences, ie go without its products? We have a duty as a global citizen to develop our own resources rather than expect Third World nations desperate for overseas investment, often with governments who are not prepared to constrain or control their development, to be exploited. New Zealand is not the only 'beautiful' place in the world and we should be aware of the impact that our demands for resources have on the countries who supply us. We have a duty to be a good global citizen.   So how does the industry improve its public image? The key here has to be to educate. This does not have to be high powered or expensive but can be as simple as getting a few local kids' hands dirty panning, and gaining some firsthand knowledge of the industry. The industry also needs to be more pro-active in the public arena. Yes, the industry has skeletons, but the industry should be publicly displaying them û admit that things have gone wrong but let's do it ourselves and not leave it up to the environmental groups to accuse, point the finger and put the industry under public scrutiny. The industry should also be publicising its successes, inviting the local press, councils, etc to view the latest area rehabilitated. But more than anything else we must tell the public what the minerals industry means to New Zealand. Can they really live without us?

In May 2000, Kanowna Belle Gold Mines (KBGM) carried out a detailed Truck versus Shaft Haulage Study. The study showed that whilst the shaft option had many operating cost benefits the capital costs were too high, therefore the truck option was selected. In May 2001, the concept of achieving æshaft typeÆ benefits without the capital costs was floated. This is achieved by separating the hoisting of ore from other mining activities. The general concept is that material from underground is transported to a central location and then transported to the surface by a special truck fleet, thus removing the dependency between trucks and loaders, providing the mine with surge capacity and decreasing operating costs. At KBGM these advantages have been gained by installing an ore pass system with a plate feeder at its base that directly loads trucks. This provides the mine with a haulage system with enough surge capacity to remove the interdependency between trucks and loaders. The plate feeder is situated just off the decline which creates the opportunity to use larger more reliable, lower cost trucks. A number of truck types were considered for the truck loop including Elphinstone AD55Æs which are the truck type being used on site prior to the truck loop, CAT 775EÆs and power trailer road trains. This paper covers the philosophy behind the truck loop, the truck selection process, project installation and commissioning, people issues and the benefits expected by the operation. As of May 2002, the project is nearing completion, with decline haulage expected to commence in July 2002.

Accurate measurements of the moisture content of iron ore have increasing importance in modern mining operations. Knowledge of the moisture content allows process control actions to be carried out to ensure that the moisture is within prescribed limits, whether this is ensuring sufficient moisture to be above the dust extinction limit or that the moisture level is below the transportable moisture limit for sea shipments. Additionally, controlling moisture within desired limits can allow for greater throughput of iron ore by limiting the amount of water transported. There are a range of options available for operators wishing to obtain moisture data, though there are few demonstrated and proven devices that are able to provide real-time analysis of the full bed-depth of material. Scantech’s through-belt moisture systems are able to accurately analyse the full bed-depth of conveyed iron ore in real time using its unique microwave transmission technology, providing valuable data for operators. Recent advances in these systems have overcome errors associated with the highly attenuating nature of iron ore, particularly for large conveyor belts and deep ore. Furthermore, analysis of different ore mineralogy and its effect on the accuracy of moisture analysis has been examined and quantified. This paper discusses some of these recent results, demonstrating achievable accuracies in spite of changing ore mineralogy. The Esperanza deposit is located 120 kin N of Mount Isa, Queensland at approximately lat 19¦20'S, long 139¦22'E on the Camooweal (SE 54-13) 1:250 000 scale map sheet. It is one of several structurally controlled copper ¦ cobalt deposits developed along the Mount Gordon Fault zone and related faults, within the Western Fold Belt of the Mount Isa Inlier (Figure 1). Together with the nearby Mammoth orebodies it forms the basis of the Gunpowder operation of Aberfoyle Limited. Until recently ore was mined from the Mammoth orebodies by open stoping with decline haulage to surface leach pads. Leaching of in situ broken ore (in place) and surface heaps, followed by solvent extraction and electro-winning (SX-EW), produced copper metal on-site. In March 1997, mining was suspended at Mammoth and the focus of the Gunpowder operation switched to development of the Esperanza orebody, which is expected to begin open cut production in mid 1998. SX-EW methods will produce 44 000 tpa of copper from an expanded plant. The pre-mining mineral resource at Esperanza (measured, indicated and inferred) is estimated at 4.6 Mt averaging 7.7 per cent copper.

The initiation of cast Pentolite primers by detonating cord has been examined by the combination of two different experimental techniques with computer simulation by the finite element hydrodynamic code DYNA2D. In the first type of experiment, the cord/primer system was placed in a water aquarium, and photographed using a high-speed image converter camera. This highlighted the emergence of the detonation front through the primer surface and the generation of shock waves in the surround- ings. Numerical simulation was used to interpret the experimental record, establishing where the cord had induced buildup to detonation inside the primer. The second experiment used the plate dent test, where the primer was placed in contact with a block of metal (here aluminium), with the resul- tant dent in the metal surface being a measure of primer output. Detailed numerical simulation of this test confirmed that the observed dent was caused by the development of a complex series of shock waves inside the Primer.

This paper examines the process and specialised skills required to extract insight from data routinely collected by mine operations, maintenance, engineering and environmental departments. Typical insights include: enhanced understanding of root causes; recommendations for next best actions; and simulation of likely scenarios. The skills required for advanced analytics are not currently the domain of mining engineers. The professions required by tomorrow’s mines are likely to be diverse and multi-disciplinary, and will include control engineers, software engineers, mathematicians and statisticians. A case study is presented that correlates mobile equipment production delays with rainfall events across three mines on the east coast of Australia. One mine is shown to have significantly more rain related downtime than the other mines, providing compelling evidence to improve productive performance.

BHP’s Western Australian Iron Ore Operations (WAIO) move approximately 250 million tons of ore per annum. The magnitude of the constant changes to the terrain models along with the diverse output and presentation requirements of numerous stakeholders presents significant challenges for the geospatial team. This paper describes how the WAIO Survey team use a combination of technology and optimised workflows to capture, ingest, publish and access large data sets for diverse stakeholder requirements. Machine learning for processing of data and the use of web based systems to track and prioritise task allocation of resources will be discussed in detail, in addition to the changes to the traditional roles of surveyors from the use of automation and mobile technology.

The paper outlines the adoption and evolution of ‘sustainable development’ as a concept in tailings management practices in the mining industry over the last 30 years. Over 500 lives have been lost in tailings facility accidents since World War 2. The paper outlines commonalities in many of these accidents, particularly the role of excess water. It considers the role effective tailings management can play in enhancing the social acceptability of mining in the future.Tailings management is a major operating cost at many mines while the cost of successfully closing tailings facilities is also very high. Current tailings management practices in the industry are outlined. The technical and engineering challenges of reducing potential risks associated with tailings by reducing water entrainment are described. The successful development of practical techniques to better manage tailings and reduce water consumption and wastage are described. For example, water removal in the alumina industry to produce a paste for dry stacking is now a reality.The future adoption of these new risk reducing techniques by the industry is discussed and the implications of the adoption or non-adoption of these techniques on the industry’s future ‘social licence’ is considered.

Polyurethane resin (PUR) is extensively used in almost all coal producing countries. On the local scene, PUR components suitable for underground application were selected and subsequently, trials were carried out at several coal mines. This paper describes the work at Pikes Gully Colliery (B.P.3Coal), where water flow rates of up to 4.5 m (1000 gallons) per minute, were reduced to 1-1.5 m /minute at the tirst stage of application. Subsequent trials were carried out at West Cliff Colliery (Kembla Coal and Coke). A variety of PUR chemical mixtures were tested in coal ribs and in the roof of intersections and roadways. The trial results are presented with all particular details. Using the PUR injection method, the roof, at the most difficult intersection, was stabilised and 'de-bonded' roof bolts were re-sealed. At Pikes Gully and West Cliff Collieries, 2 tonnes and 3 tonnes of PUR chemicals were injected, respectively. The technique, primarily based on German experience (Bergwerksverband), was used by Delta Control Systems Pty. Ltd. ACIRL was closely associated with the trials, which were monitored by installation of the measuring Stations.

After extensive testing and a period of plant trials to establish the benefits of Caro's acid (H2S05) as an alternative oxidant, Queensland Mines Limited (QML) decided to replace pyrolusite with Caro's acid in its acid leach uranium treatment plant at Nabarlek. The decision was based on the reagent savings and environmental gains associated with the removal of manganese from the process liquors, as well as the labour savings and improved oxidation reduction potential control possible in leaching using the Caro's acid system. The permanent Caro's acid generating plant was designed by Interox Chemicals Pty Ltd of Australia (IC) to suit QML's require- ments and differed from the unit used during the plant trials. Commissioning of the plant was completed in April 1983 and it has been continuously used since that date.

Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (B.O.S.) commenced in Australia in December, 1962. Two 200-ton furnaces were installed initially at Newcastle with a 50-ton furnace coupled to a continuous casting machine added in 1967. In 1965, two 100-ton furnaces were installed at Whyalla plant and two 225-ton furnaces are nearing com- pletion at Port Kembla to commence oper- ations in 1972. Plant layouts in each centre differ due to changing circumstance and increasing knowledge of the B.O.S. process since 1962. Raw materials are a most important factor for good operation of the process. Most materials come from within Australia but some are imported. General operating practices are similar in each plant, although treatment of fume at Port Kembla will be by the OG (Oxygen Converter Gas Recovery) Process as against electrostatic precipitators in Newcastle and Whyalla. Special alloy steels as well as plain carbon steels can be made by the B.O.S. process. Production potential of the process in Australia has yet to be fully utilised with 45 per cent of steel production coming from B.O.S. In 1971.

The Emily Ann nickel mine is owned and operated by LionOre Mining International Ltd. The deposit was discovered during 1997 and is blind, concealed beneath 25 m of transported cover and a further 100 m of unmineralised Archaean felsic rocks. Nickel sulfide mineralisation is hosted predominantly in strongly deformed, altered and metamorphosed Archaean komatiitic ultramafic rocks. Subordinate felsic-hosted, remobilised mineralisation is also present. Mining of ore commenced during late-2001. Since the early days of exploration drilling, through feasibility delineation drilling and subsequent mining, a geological model involving thrusting and folding of a komatiitic-hosted nickel sulfide deposit has been an evolving theme. Development of appropriate mine geology procedures, including detailed mapping, significantly increased the confidence of mine-site geology and engineering staff in the geological model and improved operational efficiencies during start-up. This also allowed the engineering and mining team to develop a tolerance for the large fluctuations in daily production grade, with an understanding that budgeted production targets, on a level-by-level basis, were achievable. This paper describes the development of the current interpretation of the deposit and emphasises the importance of a sound understanding of deposit geology. The direct benefits at Emily Ann included improvements in drill targeting, resource estimation and mine planning.

Although generation of environmentally harmful hydrogen sulfide is considered to be related to sour gas fields, sweet gas reservoirs and waste fluids, travertine springs and geothermal fields may also produce acid gas (H2S and CO2) under certain conditions. The potential parameters influencing such a possibility need to be fully investigated to evaluate the extent of the consequences and predict hydrogen sulfide generation accordingly. Reports on hydrogen sulfide production at different regions and fields were gathered worldwide for the cases when some of them did not have such a problem previously. In order to inspect different aspects of these case studies, some other regions with no hydrogen sulfide content were selected as control. In all cases water samples were taken carefully for chemical analysis in the laboratory. Besides, mineral compositions were characterised in some cases for better evaluation. In order to give a thorough prospect of hydrogen sulfide production, a geochemical model was prepared. In situ engineering geological conditions, especially pressure and temperature, were assigned in the model to investigate the possibility of H2S generation using PHREEQC software. The results of modelling revealed that although many similarities existed between mineral compositions of the cases, certain formations were particularly prone to hydrogen sulfide generation. For better evaluation, important exchangeable cation ratios such as potassium/sodium, calcium/magnesium and ion proportions like sulfate and chloride were calculated as trends of the formations. As expected, the model could successfully monitor a higher ratio of SO42- and Cl- in potential H2S generator formations. Wide variation in percentage of HCO3- was considered as a secondary observatory parameter for better estimation. In addition, it was noticed that higher anion content created an environment ready to absorb any cations and this makes H2S generation easier. Finally, using correlations between predictors and estimators for low depth and deep samples defined the degree of effectiveness for every sample.

This paper describes the design, manufacture and site services associated with the supply of mine hoists for the new mine under construction by Falconbridge Limited in Ontario, Canada. Two new shafts are being sunk, and the hoisting equipment at each shaft can be summarised as follows: Ventilation shaft:4.66 m diameter double-drum second-hand hoist, originally in operation at San Manuel Mine, Arizona, to be used as the shaft sinking hoist. The second-hand hoist presented a challenge in that during its previous life, the hoist had been intensively operated during service at San Manuel Mine, and this paper describes the scope of refurbishment work undertaken, both electrically and mechanically, to ensure future reliable operation, together with the requirement to meet Canadian and Ontario regulations and codes of practice. 3.05 m diameter new single drum auxiliary hoist to be used as a second means of egress. Main shaft:4.57 m diameter new double-drum hoist to be used initially as the shaft sinking hoist, and subsequently to be converted to the equivalent of a single-drum multi-rope hoist for service duties during the production phase; 5.49 m diameter new double-drum hoist to be used for skip hoisting during the production phase; and 3.05 m diameter new single drum auxiliary hoist.The new hoists are all designed to comply with SABS requirements such that hoisting with reduced rope safety factors will be possible in the future. This paper describes the principles involved both mechanically and electrically. Particular attention is paid to the conversion of the main shaft service hoist from a double-drum sinking hoist to a multi-rope hoist.This paper describes the ac electrical powertrains (drives and motors) used that eliminate the need for harmonic filters and reactive power compensation equipment since they exhibit no negative effects on the utility electrical network system. This paper describes the logistical challenges of installing, commissioning and setting to work a series of five hoists in a short time frame.
