A rotating disc geometry has been used to provide a uniformly accessible surface for a kinetic study of the cementation of the metals cadmium, lead and silver from dilute aqueous solutions. This work is an extension of studies carried out on the Cu/Zn and Cu/Fe systems for which the rection rate was found to be completely solution-phase mass-transfer controlled. When the amount of material deposited was greater than 0.2 to 0.4 mg/cm2 there was an apparent enhancement in e which is attributed to the formation of a roughened deposit. This same phenomeon was obseived in the Cu/Zn Cu/Fe systems. Again, the rate of reaction of each system investigated was found to be solution-phase mass ,..~sfer controlled.

In response to the increase in consumption of galvanised steel for automobiles in the last decade and the problems associated with remelting larger quantities of galvanised steel scrap, a process is being developed to separate and recover the steel and zinc from galvanised ferrous scrap. The zinc is dissolved from the scrap in hot caustic using anodic assistance and is recovered electrolytically as dendritic powder. The dezinced ferrous scrap is rinsed and used directly. The process is effective for zinc, lead, and aluminum removal on loose and baled scrap and on all types of galvanised steel. The process has been pilot tested for batch treatment of 900 tonnes of mostly baled scrap. A pilot plant to treat continuously loose scrap, with a design capacity of 48 000 tonnes annually, has been in operation in East Chicago, Indiana since early in 1993. The first 450 t of scrap degalvanised in the pilot plant have residual zinc below 0.01 per cent and sodium dragout below 0.01 per cent. Use of degalvanised steel scrap decreases raw materials, environmental compliance costs, and opportunity costs to steel- and iron-makers. Availability of clean degalvanised scrap may enable integrated steel producers to recycle furnace dusts to the sinter plant and EAF shops to produce flat products without the use of high quality scrap alternatives such as DRI, pig iron, or iron carbide. Recycling the components of galvanised steel scrap saves primary energy, decreases zinc imports, and adds value to the scrap. The quantities of zinc available by the year 2000 from prompt and obsolete automotive scrap will approach 25 per cent of zinc consumed in the major automotive production centres of the world. In this paper, it is briefly introduced that China's Ordovician limestone confined-water menaces coal mining and Ordovician water is prevented and cured to secure the safety of coal mining. The theory of "Down-Three-Zones" is presented on the basis of research and practice in recent ten years. The concept of "Down-Three-Zones" of floor water-eruption is described clearly. Finally, the principle and method of applying the theory of "Down-Three-Zones" are discussed. 1. An Introduction of Damage: China is rich in coal resources. The conditions of coal field geology are quite complicated. There is an area of two million square kilometre of Karst limestone in nine million six thousand square kilometres of territory. The resources of underground water are rather plentiful, but this menaces coal exploration. Sixty percent of coal mines in China are damaged by limestone confined-water in different scales, particularly coal mines located the Carboniferous-Permian coal fields of the Ordovician limestone distribution area of Northern China. Because there is the 500-800 metre thickness of Ordovocian limestone and the well developed Karst containsl plentiful water, Karst water can have more than 100 Kg/cm pressure. Limestone aquifers have only distances of several metres or several decade metres to coal seam, Karst water can enter the aquituge and even the coal seam, large eruptions often occur. For example, a mine of 3 million ton production capacity had an eruption of 2053 cubic metres per minute. This is the largest confined-water eruption which has brought enormous economic damage and threatened the safe production of coal mining. Therefore, the prevention and cure of Ordovician water has immense advantage to the development of the coal industry. There are several decades experience in the prevention of Ordovician water-eruption in China. The prevention of Ordovician water-eruption has two kinds of plans. 1) dewatering and depression: it refers to dewatering of aquifers as roofs of seam and depression of aquifers as floors of seam in mining areas. 2) comprehensive prevention under the condition of having water pressure in aquiters. During the last few years the quality requirements on roads and railroads have become more accentuated due to the desire to minimise maintenance costs. This has, in turn, led to increasing requirements in the preparation of ballast materials and pavement aggregates. As the access to natural gravel in northern Europe is decreasing (due to lack of availability or by law restrictions) the use of crushed rock material is becoming more and more important. The aim of this paper is to derive and describe a universal method for the prediction of particle size distributions from compressing crusher machines such as jaw- and cone-crushers. Based on a closely defined physical model, expressions which define the size reduction process are derived. Conditions for simplifying assumptions are clearly outlined. The choice and mix of breakage functions is a central subtopic iò the analysis of the crusher machine processes. Known breakage functions are reviewed and evaluated. A new concept for determination of a true breakage operator which is related to physical properties of the crusher device and the size distribution of the feed material is introduced. Finally experimental tests are compared to numerical calculations. The method described in the paper can be a useful tool when designing crushing plants or when optimizing the output of compressing crusher Machines.

Underground mining with the cut and fill method has been declining during the past decade or so, being replaced mostly by sublevel open stoping methods. During 1983 the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Ltd. (AMIRA) commissioned a review of the method, with the aim of compiling the state-of-the-art, indicating future trends and recommending topics for research that would be needed to support this future mining. Mines using the cut and fill method in Australia and three other countries were visited to compile current practices and expected developments.Cut and fill is mostly used where geological and ground conditions are unsuitable for open or caving methods. These range from narrow, irregular orebodies to wide, massive orebodies where pillars are retained in ore. There is significant potential for improvement and further development of the method. It may then be used in a broader range of conditions and for orebodies that may not otherwise be viable to mine.

Increasing contamination/impurity levels (including arsenic, antimony, mercury etc.) of concentrates is an issue of global commercial and health / environmental significance. With increasing environmental pressures at smelters, penalties for contaminants in concentrates continue to rise, accompanied by lower reject limits. There is a strong incentive for miners to investigate alternative means to remove contaminants in order to increase the value of complex ores and concentrates. This paper discusses the global problem of contamination in complex ores and concentrates, how the Toowong Process technology is a potential solution to this problem, and the opportunities this technology brings to the business of dealing with deleterious elements. The Dugald River lead-zinc-silver deposit is located approximately 60 km north-west of Cloncurry and 87 km north-east of Mount Isa. The development project is expected to turn operational in 2018. The resource is estimated to contain 61.1 Mt at 12.6 per cent zinc, 1.9 per cent lead and 34 g/t silver, with a projected mine life of 25 years. The evolution from exploration project to development project has presented multiple challenges for the technical team. Understanding and modelling the structural complexity of the deposit has been one of these challenges.Historically fault zones were logged as a lithology, with structural measurements recorded in a separate database table. When underground drill programs and development commenced in late 2012, it was recognised the deposit was more structurally complex than had been modelled. The extensive number of fault zone lithologies in core logging, made it difficult to identify fault trends and model faults in 3D software packages.In 2014, a structural project was conducted to produce a fault model for the deposit. The project highlighted that by logging the faults as a lithology, a shortage of fault characteristics was being recorded. Additionally, structural information could not be filtered to identify different fault sets due to the lack of information available to filter on. One of the major outcomes of the study was to change the methodology for the structural logging of drill core.Faults are now logged in a separate structural log. The structural log collects two types of information: interval data and point data. The interval data represents the damage zone of the fault in the surrounding rock and the point data the plane of movement for the fault. The faults are further characterised by their intensity on a scale of one to five, the type of fault structure (fault breccia, fault vein etc), the minerals present on the fault surface and structural measurements when available.The new data set allows fault data to be filtered based on fault characteristics, making implicit and explicit modelling of the faults more timely and accurate. The data set can be used to produce fault wireframes as single surfaces from the point data or hanging wall and footwall surfaces from the interval data. Sintering of lead and zinc concentrates is practised by Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited to provide both desuiphurised lump sinter feed, for simultaneous reduction to zinc and lead in the Imperial Smelting Process blast furnace, and sulphur dioxide gas for sulphuric acid manufacture. From November, 1969 a 20 percent increase in production rate has been obtained through improvements in operating technique. A gradual increase in bed permeability was achieved by modifications to the feed mix conditioning equipment and by improving moisture control. However advantage could not be taken of the higher permeability to increase sulphur elimination because the hardness of the lump sinter decreased. Higher throughput, better quality sinter and more stable sintering conditions were however made possible by simultaneously: 1. reducing segregation and compaction in the sinter bed, by narrowing the discharge opening of the main layer feed hopper, 2. reducing the sizing of sinter returns to give a closer size spectrum of particles in the feed mix, and 3. increasing the sulphide sulphur content of the feed mix to give higher bed Temperatures.

IN the early age of steel it was made hy what is known as the cementation proeess, in which wrought iron was embedded in charcoal and heated in a mufflc furnace to a tcmperature of approximately 1100° C. for varying lengths of time, the length of time depending upon the amount of carbon (or better known in thosedays as the degree of hardness) required in the finished product.By this process the resultant product obtained was not of uniform quality, and because of this uncertainty of quality Huntsman was induced, in the year 1740, to introduee what is known as the crucible process.This process consisted of cutting into small pieces the product of the cementation process, placing these pieces in a crucible, and melting them down with the aid of a eoke-fired furnace, after which the molten metal was cast into suitahly shaped ingots, from which could be hammered any desired shape.A section of crucible furnace is shown in Fig. 1. By this means a product, very uniform in character, was produced.The process is still in use, but, owing to its high operating cost, it is mostly eonfined to the production of very high-grade carhon and alloy steels. Its position to-day as a producer of these high-grade steels is, however, being very seriously challenged by the electric process.It was owing to the excessive cost of crucible steels and the need of producing a steel in commercial quantities and at a reasonable cost, that led Sir Henry Bessemer to introduce what is known as the Bessemer process.

The Ravenswood Mine in North Queensland is the first gold mine developed by Carpentaria Gold Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of MIM Holdings Ltd. Carpentaria Exploration Pty Ltd began exploration at Ravenswood in 1978. However initial exploration of the main gold producing area (Buck Reef East) commenced in March 1987 when exploration rights to four key leases were secured. A rapid, co-ordinated exploration and development program produced gold from a heap leach operation nine months after the first costeans were dug at Buck Reef East. To treat higher grade ore found at depth in the Buck Reef East pit and the metallurgically more difficult Buck Reef West ore, a carbon in pulp plant was commissioned in May 1988. The mine is currently producing at a rate of approximately 40 000 ounces of gold per year. Ore at Ravenswood is hosted by hydrothermally altered diorites and tonalites of the Ravenswood Granodiorite complex. Alteration is controlled by planes of permeability formed by joints, shear zones and dilational breccias. The complex orebody geometry resulting from these controls required very detailed surface and drill exploration for adequate definition. Carpentaria's need for early cash flow meant that economic, mining and metallurgical considerations governed choices of exploration techniques, program timing, material and data collected. The initial reserve of 1.1 mt @ 2.87 g/t Au was defined by sectional polygonal methods. Grade control is based on geologic mapping and blast hole or channel sample assays. Ore is batched through the crusher and sampled to monitor grade control and mining performance. Minimal dilution has occurred. Gold content is greater than predicted by the reserve. Sprinkling of heaps commenced in November 1987. Changes have been made to the pad design and to the method of heap construction. Heap leach ore is treated at a rate of 400 000 tpa.

In recent years new instrumentation and digital technology have Wrote possible a new facet of goo-physics: broadband seismology. From digitally record-ing networks and arrays. broadband scistnograrns of body waves that are flat to displacement and veloc-ity in at least the frequency range from 0.01 to 5.0 liz can now be routinely obtained for most carthquakes of magnitude greater than about 5.5. In contrast to data from conventional narrowband seismographs, broad-band body waves have sufficient spectral information to nvest,igate the many frequency-dependent eflects that may arise from source finiteness and from wave prop-agat ion phenomenon. Besides the usual parameters of depth. moment and focal mechanism, broadband data have sufficient spectral information to provide estimates of radiated energy, associated stresses and the frequency dependence of source parameters. Moreover. teleseis-mically recorded broadband data and near-field strong motion accelerograms overlap in the frequency band be-tween about 0.1-2.0 Hz. Thus. v it h broadband data it is possible to connect far field and near field data in order to make estimates of acceleration for almost any seismically active region of the circum-Pacific.

The Jianchaling gold deposit is located about 1200 km south west of Beijing in central China. The deposit was discovered in 1988 by the Northwestern Geological Exploration Bureau (711 Exploration Team). Sino Gold Limited, an Australian based company, developed the mine in 1998 and is currently operating a 1000 t per day underground mine, producing about 80 000 ounces of gold per year. The pre-mine resource for Jianchaling was 1.6 million tonnes at 9.85 g/t gold. The deposit occurs within the east-west trending Mesozoic Qinling-Dabie orogenic belt formed during the Yanshanian Orogeny. In the Jianchaling region, gold mineralisation is primarily hosted by regional west-northwest to east-southeast striking faults, the most important of which, the reverse sinistral F145 fault, hosts the larger gold deposits including Jianchaling. At the mine scale, the most important zone of mineralisation is localised within a shallowly north dipping dilation on the F145 fault. Proterozoic dolomite forms the hangingwall and serpentinite and talc schist the footwall to the fault. Within the footwall, serpentinite is the most important host rock to mineralisation. Initial alteration involves replacement of serpentine to dolomite ¦ pyrite, talc to ankerite ¦ pyrite, and magnetite and chromite to pyrite, the latter locally through a transitional hematite phase. Proximal to feeder structures, the carbonate minerals have undergone partial dissolution and replacement to quartz. Gold is related to arsenean pyrite and marcasite rimming and replacement of early-formed pyrite, and associated with iron release during the processes of dolomitisation, silicification and carbonate dissolution.

This paper describes an investigation on the surface properties and mechanisms involved in the agglomeration of iron ore. For this purpose, an organic binder (carboxyl-methyl-cellulose (CMC)) was used in substitution of bentonite, the classic binder in iron ore concentrate agglomeration. Recently, a renewed interest of the iron ore producers in Brazil to replace bentonite for an organic binder, because of the economy that can be achieved in the, blast furnace operation. These savings are mainly due to the lower aluminum silicate addition which decreases slag volume and the improved pellet metallurgical properties which have the potential for lowering hot-metal production costs. Also organic binders are effective at lower addition levels, which results in lower storage and transportation costs. It is very important in Brazil because of the vast geographical area since transportation is made mainly by truck. Another advantage of organic binders is that they have low ash contents, and therefore most of the binders bum. off during the pellet firing operation. Previous studies have demonstrated the possibilities of the use of CIVIC, but in addition to its high cost, the pellets presented improper behavior at high temperatures or when prepared with high moisture levels. In the investigation here described, these problems have been solved through the addition of other reagents to CMC.

Mineral sands are different to almost any other commodity; however, it shares similarities with other commodity types, such as the importance of quality constraints of iron ore and coal or the importance of physical properties of diamonds. The mineral sands industry consists of two principal product streams; titanium dioxide minerals û in the form of rutile, ilmenite and leucoxene, and zircon. The principal valuable heavy minerals (VHM) include ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile and zircon. Variations of other titanium minerals occur between the end members of ilmenite and rutile, including pseudo rutile and anatase. Most mineral sands deposits are found in unconsolidated fossil shorelines several hundreds of metres to tens of kilometres and occasionally hundreds of kilometres inland from the present coastline. Mineral sands orebodies essentially fall into two categories based on the mode of deposition: alluvial or aeolian. Alluvial deposits are further split into marine beach placers (or strandlines) and lacustrine heavy mineral (HM) accumulations. Exploration for mineral sands involves the positive identification of key criteria leading to the focus of exploratory surface sampling, augering and drilling. Assaying is primarily focused around determining the percentage of HM contained within a given sample. Other results of interest include clay fines, sand and oversize. Metallurgical/mineralogical assessment is often undertaken via laboratory scale bench tests that replicate the wet concentration and dry mill processing routes. The most critical component in resource assessment for mineral sands is about quantifying HM grade, then mineralogical assemblage and then quality of those mineral species. This will determine whether a mineral sand final product is marketable or not. Mining of mineral sands is conducted either wet or dry. Wet methods are generally preferred for large tonnage, unconsolidated and low clay orebodies. Where ground conditions are hard and orebodies are small, high grade and discontinuous, dry mining techniques are generally employed. Concentration of mineral sands from the primary ore is carried out in two sections; wet, utilising sizing and gravity differentiation between HM, VHM, clay and quartz, and dry, exploiting the magnetic, electrostatic and to a lesser extent specific gravity (SG) properties of the minerals of interest. Mineral sands exploration, mining and processing faces the same operating challenges as the rest of the resource sector. Added to this are the issues that are unique to mineral sands and to which the industry devotes considerable resources to developing solutions.

The paper describes a new process for filtration which combines the continuous operation of conventional vacuum filters with the low final moisture contents hitherto only achievable with plate and frame presses. The increasingly high portion of fine particles causes several problems in the filtration of copper concentrates. One drawback is that remarkable quantities of liquid are attached to the very fine particles because of their specific surface area. Furthermore, fine particles also reduce the size of the capillaries in the filter cake, thus increasing the critical pressure which any filtration system has to exceed to achieve the desired final cake moisture. The maximum filtration pressure of conventional vacuum filters is limited by nature itself and by practical aspects to approximately 0.75 bar. The hyperbaric filter combines the continuous operating principle with an increase in filtration pressure of up to 6 bar simply by placing the entire disc or drum filter inside a pressure vessel. The major machine components and process features are explained in the details of the paper. After extensive research and field testing, 23 ANDRITZ hyperbaric filters, with a total filtration area of 1968 m2 have now been sold. Seventeen of these units (1440 m2) are in commercial use and more units are, on order. Performance data on copper concentrates from plants in Australia, South America, Poland, Africa and North America are outlined in detail. Compared to vacuum filters, generally hyperbaric filters will reduce the final cake moisture of concentrates with 75 per cent

B Lens Main is a scheelite orebody with an average dip of approximately 15¦ and thickness ranging from 1.5 to 6.0 m. The orebody is overlain by a banded section of ore and waste which tends to slab off if left unsupported. It was originally planned to mine a large portion of this orebody by room and pillar methods, with existing diesel trackless equipment. This, however, proved unsuitable for a number of reasons and the smaller scale method of slot stoping with hand machines and scrapers was employed. The following major problems were encountered. 1. The method was new to the mine and the work force, and had to be commenced quickly using existing or easily obtainable equipment. This is gradually being overcome by training, modification of procedures and introduction of more suitable equipment. 2. The slabbing from the hanging wall had to be controlled, either by support or by mining this low grade section and accepting the resultant dilution. This has been approached in a number of ways, depending on conditions and the method will have to be further modified as different conditions are encountered in new areas.

The mining industry has been slow at adopting the latest management philosophies from other industry sectors, such as manufacturing, and in retrospect, with good cause. With the plethora of three-letter-acronyms such as TQM, JIT, TPM and now, BPR each touted as the panacea for profit improvement, you wonder if you must choose one or attempt to embrace them all! In truth, each new insight into organisational behaviour bears some investigation. This paper looks at the underlying principles and elements of successful change strategies, and how several mining companies, including coal mines, in Australia, Chile and Canada, are applying these principles to their operations. These examples illustrate the need to think radically, and to view mining as an overall process delivering value to the customer rather than a collection of functional silos. They also show that often, a continuous improvement initiative is not enough when a fundamental redesign, a paradigm shift, is needed for a performance breakthrough.

Man has always been and will always be part of his environment, in ,a good, bad or indifferent manner. Until quite recently, this environment has been the atmospheric boundary layer above the land masses, and to a limited extent the air-sea interface of the oceans. Since the days when he lived in caves, he has built up a wealth of observations on these two environments,-with ever-increasing scientific precision which unfortunately until quite recently was completely insufficient for modern capabilities of data analysis. Consequently, in a sense, he has left in his wake thousands of years of missed, opportunities for making exact observations and increasing his understanding. The data of the past are lost and he has to be satisfied with what he can assemble from now on when his environ- ment, largely as a result of his actions, is exhibiting more and more rapid variations in time; in other words, time series of observations of phenomena are required, the length of which is critical for most purposes of analysis.

The problem of rockbursts presents a serious threat to many deep, hard-rock mines. For several decades, the owners and managers of affected mines have been concious of the urgent need to control rockbursts but, to a large extent, their efforts have been hampered by a lack of fundamental knowledge. This paper will attempt to outline the extent and depth of present understanding of the phenomenon and to show how better control may be achieved in the future. It is suggested that it is helpful to distinguish two aspects of the problem: that pertaining to the mechanism of the seismic event and that associated with the mechanism of damage. Understanding damage mechanism will enable development of better support techniques while proper understanding of the source mechanism could lead to better mine planning and improved stoping layouts. In this regard, the practice of partial extraction with systematic strike stabilising pillars is discussed in some detail.
