This report outlines the experience of Australian mining operators in dealing with large falls of roof in advance of longwall supports. Previous and present techniques used for face stabilisation have been described, together with an analysis of [actors which contributed to the roof falls, in each case. Attention has been focused on the stabilisation technique used at Angus Place Colliery, where the face coal was successfully reinforced by injecting chemical foam into Lite fractured areas. Although considered to be one of the worst roof falls in the history of Australian longwalls (60 m in length and up to 10 in in height), it was subsequently possible to resume cutting in Longwall 9 two weeks after the foam injection. A preliminary schedule of work involving the 'strata replacement' method, is also discussed. It has been based substantially on experience gained with cementitious supports, principally by ACIRL and Monier Resources.

The situation in which a gas stream flows through a bed of solids is found in many extractive metallurgy operations. Examples include blast furnace smelting, sintering and pellet firing. In such cases the resistance of the bed to fluid flow and heat transfer is of major significance to the operation of the process. This depends on the structure of the bed, which in turn is influenced by the manner in which the materials are charged to the bed. In this work, packed beds of hematite pellets of two different sizes were prepared in which the pellets were charged as a uniform mixture and in layers. The porosity, flow resistance and heat front velocity were measured and compared for the different bed configurations. For layered beds, the overall porosity and heat front velocity increased while the flow resistance decreased when compared with the values obtained for the uniform mixture. The size of the layers also had an effect on flow Properties.

Fragmentation variation laws in loading and non-loading areas are obtained by cement block model blasting experiments under various stemming lengths. A reasonable ratio between loading length and stemming length is worked out according to minimum average fragment size. The present continuous loading structure, for its very long length to be stemmed, leads to insufficient fragmentation in the upper part of bench. So a new loading structure with bottom air cushion is put forward. The author analyzes blasting effects and processes of two loading structures' and proves that there exists a optimal length of air cushion.\

The Nickel Rim Depth Cu-Ni-PGE deposit, discovered by Falconbridge Limited in 1993, illustrates several trends in exploration in the Sudbury area. Recent discoveries tend to be deep, high grade, footwall hosted, close to or straddle property boundaries and made using a multi-disciplinarian exploration approach that integrates economic considerations with geology, metal geochemistry and geophysics (borehole EM). The Nickel Rim deposit occurs down dip of Inco's Victor Deep deposit (4.2 million tonnes at 2.25 per cent Ni, 7.30 per cent Cu) in the eastern margin of the Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC) at a depth of 2650 m. Before commencing drilling an economic evaluation was done to determine the minimum size needed to be economic at the expected depths and determine the expected value of an exploration venture. The subsequent surface exploration program discovered a drill indicated, undiluted mineral inventory of 1.6 million tonnes of 1.58 per cent Ni, 10.13 per cent Cu, 4.17g/t Pt and 3.50 g/t Pd including 519 000 tonnes of 4.13 per cent Ni, 25.53 per cent Cu, 9.76 g/t Pt and 8.42 g/t Pd. The deposit is hosted by gneiss, migmatite, gabbro and pseudotachylite (Sudbury Breccia) 100 m below the base of the SIC.

Frequency of reports on premature failure of rock bolts and cable bolts have increased in past two decades. Such a failure threatens both the safety of underground mine workers and the economic viability of the operations. Herein, we report on analysis of rock bolts and cable bolts failed recently in three underground mines in Australia. Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques were used to study the failed bolts. MPI showed a number of subcritical cracks on the surface of the bolts. The majority of the cracks in both cable bolts and rock bolts were initiated from the base of ribs (indentation) where the stress concentration was high. SEM examinations showed tearing topography surface (TTS) in all failed rock bolts and cable bolts. These indicated that the failure occurred through hydrogen assisted stress corrosion cracking (HISCC). The results of this study enhanced the understanding about the failure of rock bolts and cable bolts in underground mines. CITATION:Chen, H, Ramandi, H, Craig, P, Crosky, A and Saydam, S, 2018. Incidents associated with spontaneous combustion of coal have resulted in the loss of many lives and considerable capital and equip- ment. Nevertheless, the factors controlling the propensity of coal to spontaneous combustion are not clearly understood and there is a need for research to study the effects of rank, petrog- raphy, moisture contents, etc. This has been attempted in a study of the propensities of selected Queensland coals to spontaneous combustion. An adiabatic calori- meter was constructed to study the self-heating of a large number of coals. Chemical and petro- graphic analyses of the coals were determined and an attempt was made to relate these propert- ies to the self-heating characteristics of the coal. The results show a strong relationship between rank and self-heating characteristics and that petrographic composition of coal may also be of importance. Some observations on the application of the laboratory results to the practical situation are made as are recommendations for future research.

Quite often the reserve assessor becomes enamored with the numbers gen- erated and forgets the basis for his assessment. The quality of the assess- ment can only be as good as the quality of the input data. The use of seismic data from the Gippsland Basin in assess- ing Esso/BHP's oil and gas reserves is an excellent example of this principle. By significantly improving the quality of seismic data, a much more reliable estimate of a field's reserve potential can be made. In addition, it provides the basis for further delineation drill- ing which, as recent experience in Gippsland has shown, often leads to increased reserves.

Ernest Henry mine (EHM) is a sub-level caving operation located in north-west Queensland, Australia. Located below a previously mined open pit, the underground operation ramped up production to 6.8Mt/a in 2017. The EHM ore body dips at 45 degrees to the South and therefore requires each level to “step out” from the level above as seen in Figure 1. Within this step out zone it is important to both maximise recovery and allow for efficient operation of the underground workings production to bring the level up to full production as quickly as possible. Throughout the step out design process, a combination of further defining the ore boundary, using lessons learnt from production performance on upper levels and the introduction of design improvements, has reduced the production ramp-up time, decreased costs and increased recovery for a single level at EHM. The sampling of non-ferrous concentrates from trucks and trains has long been carried out either manually or by automatic spears. Very little use has been made of conventional sampling systems for sampling concentrates at transfer points, or cross-belt samplers for sampling from the belt as the concentrate moves along the conveyor.Due to the high value of base metal concentrates and the often extremely heterogeneous nature of the material it is imperative that the sampling procedures adopted are accurate and precise. The basic principle that all particles in the stream have an equal opportunity to be included in the final sample is not fulfilled by accepted traditional concentrate sampling procedures such as the spearing of wagons, trucks or streams. This may lead to significant bias being introduced into the final sample.Consequently, the application of correct sampling procedures, either with conventional cross-stream samplers or the newer cross-belt samplers, is of prime importance.SGS Australia has recently installed a number of cross-belt samplers for the sampling of base metal concentrates both in Australia and overseas. The application of these samplers will be discussed with emphasis on the benefits of their use.

The Goodyear nickel prospect is located 45 km southeast of Kalgoorlie (31.04¦S, 121.80¦E) near the eastern boundary of Hampton Area - East Location 45 (Figure 1). Nickel mineralisation was discovered on the Goodyear prospect in March 1996 when a reverse circulation drillhole (GYC5), initially drilled in December 1995, was deepened to meet a minimum footwall penetration requirement of 20 in that had been set for the drill program. Approximately 3 in of sulphides averaging 4.9 per cent nickel was intersected from 296 metres down-hole, this being within 2 in of the first end-of-hole. Hole GYC5 was part of an eight hole drilling program undertaken by Titan Resources in late-1995. This program was designed to test whether nickel mineralisation in the Dunlop prospect, discovered by the Western Mining Corporation - BHP Camylia Joint Venture immediately east of the East Location 45 boundary, continued across the tenement boundary. The area targeted by the initial drill program had been explored by Western Mining Corporation in the mid-1980s using extensive surface sampling and a drilling program that included 17 RAB and percussion drillholes. None of these holes intersected nickel Mineralisation.\

In the upper coal surface in the Latrobe Valley, craters known locally as fireholes have developed due to prehistoric coal fires. They can be several hundred metres across and up to fifty metres deep, and are now filled with overburden materials varying from hard baked clays to very soft lacustrine clays. In addition to reducing coal reserves, continuous mining operations are seriously affected by fireholes. Large undulations in the upper coal surface result in a mixture of coal and overburden on the upper mining levels. The very soft lacustrine clays are unstable in the mine batters and the overburden dump, are difficult to handle on the bucket wheel excavator/conveyer system, and have insufficient bearing capacity for the large bucket wheel excavators. Early identification is essen- tial and both drilling and dynamic core penetrometer have been exten- sively used. However, this has not proved adequate in locating and defining the extent of all fireholes, due largely to their irregular shape. To overcome this a range of geophysical techniques has been trialled with very promising results. A trial area has been covered on a twenty metre grid using gravity and Geonics EM34 conductivity measurements and the same area has been covered at a closer spacing with high resolution magnetics. Image processing of contoured magnetic, EM34 conductivity and residual gravity data has resulted in very good correlation with drilling data.

The use of a 35mm non-metric SLR camera and an analytical plotter to prepare close range photogrammetric (CRP) plans of a quarry and open pit mine face is described. The plans, at scales ranging from 1:5 -1:1 000, were used to measure the orientation of geological structures and failure surfaces in the exposed faces.Details are provided on the equipment used and the field techniques. The method:ò is quick and relatively cheap to perform,ò allows the accurate orientation of specific geological features to be determined,ò provides survey results of suitable accuracy that may be used for detailed geotechnical analyses of pit wall failures,ò shows great potential as a rapid and accurate technique for monitoring changes in pit wall profiles with time.

Three principal features of the ore at Captain's Flat, New South Wales, tend to complicate concentration of the valuable minerals, these being:1. The ore occurs in three more or less separate bodies which vary in texture and mineral ratios. Mining of constant proportions of the three sections, or adequate blending of the ore, is not fully effective, and consequently the flotation section is subjected to feedof varying texture.2. The mineral association in the heavily pyritic ore is extremely intimate. Composite particles exist even at 20 micron sizeI, and probably finer.3. The copper content of the ore averages_about 0,6%, which is high enough to justify recovery of the chalcopyrite in a separate concentrate. A review of the metallurgical history of the mine shows that this feature has been the cause of the several major changes in flowsheet of the flotation section since the commencement of milling.METALLURGICAL HISTORYThe mine started production in January 1939, at the rate of 250 tons per day of sulphide ore, assaying 0·68% Cu, 6·52% Pb, 10·8% Zn, and about 1 dwt. Au and 2 oz. Ag per ton.

(Quality can be defined as that which is acceptable to the market and can be supplied with a predictable degree of uniformity and dependability at a low cost. The market for any mining product is downstream processing, whether it be an alumina refinery, a gold processing plant or a flotation plant. The cost of that downstream process is partly dependent on uniformity of its feed material both in physical and chemical terms. With more operations adopting procedures which require quality assurances in line with International Standards, from their raw material suppliers, miners must look to their grade control processes to provide uniformity and predicability.This is not a new concept. The mining industry has constantly been working with ahighly variable raw material supplied by Mother Nature, from whom we cannot demand quality assurances. Through the processes of exploration, resource and reserve definition, long and short term mine planning and day to day grade control an end product has been supplied which consistently meets our customers requirements, in an economic fashion. When any of these processes fail, then penalties are incurred which can range from increased mineral processing costs to loss of markets and in the ultimate case, failure of a mining operation.

Geostatistics has been widely used for more than four decades as a powerful tool in ore resource/reserve estimates and grade control. This method has gradually replaced the conventional method such as polygon and cross-section for grade estimation by more mathematical techniques such as kriging. The advances in geostatistical understanding and the availability of appropriate software packages have given much more contribution in speed and high accuracy during production. However, in many cases, these techniques are sometime applied without support with a good thorough understanding of the geological controls on metal distribution. To produce the result close to actual, the geological control in interpretation and appropriate geostatistical task is a must. Geological logging was described in the core must be consistent with the level plan produced by commercial modelling software used as a guide for grade control during production. Experience gained through evaluation of the Central I deposit resulted that the most effective systems continue to be based on geostatistical methods of resource estimation. Computer applications modelling software packages are necessarily as the core of an efficient in undertaking these assignments. They contribute to make a valued to data management and are becoming increasingly effective during processing. The latter role is particularly important to check the actual versus estimated values where will significantly to improve personnel to have a confident with their knowledge combined with experience and complete their jobs satisfy.

The selection of an appropriate mining method should take into account the geometry of the deposit and its physical properties. Other factors which assist in the determination are the requirements for flexibility in the mining process, minimisation of risk factors and maximising the financial return. Several established mining methods exist which can encompass the requirements to deliver the optimum mining method, this can be in both an underground or open cut environment. The objective is to outline these methods and where they can be applied in a mining project.

Gold and copper mineralization in the Parkes area is hosted by a meridional sequence of Late Ordovician to Early Silurian igneous and sedimentary rocks on the central northern edge of the exposed Lachlan Fold Belt. The mineralized area straddles two zones separated in part by the Parkes Thrust and exhibiting different styles of deformation and mineralization (Figure 1). The western zone is characterized by gently folded rocks, with shallow dips and weak to non-existent axial plane cleavage. Faulting is restricted to directions oblique to bedding. Numerous occurrences of minor copper mineralization are known, but of recent national importance is the discovery of the Coradgery- Goonumbla porphyry copper-gold deposits by Geopeko Ltd. A resource in excess of 250 million tonnes has been delineated (Jones, 1985), and this represents the first porphyry deposit of sufficient grade and tonnage to be potentially mineable in New South Wales. The eastern zone is much more strongly deformed. Folding is tight with strongly developed axial plane cleavage. Faulting is abundant both parallel and oblique to bedding. Quartz veining is also abundant, and a narrow belt of gold mineralization adjacent to the Parkes Thrust stretches from Forbes in the south, through Parkes and Peak Hill, to Tomingley in the north. Over 31 tonnes of gold have been produced from this gold belt, mostly before 1914, and now three deposits show good potential for redevelopment - Peak Hill, and the London-Victoria and Lachlan lines of lode.
