The granulites and related "dry" igneous rocks tend to be passed over during exploration for metals. Preliminary data show that high trace concentrations of Cu, Ni and other metals of economic interest are common in orthopyroxene and some of the other granulite minerals. During retrograde metamorphism of granulites, pyroxenes are converted to amphiboles or phyllosilicates, and significant quantities of metals are released and become available for incorporat- ion into new mineral phases, or may be transported elsewhere. S--rich scapolite is the normal scapolite of granulites. Its retrogression to secondary plagioclase provides much S which scavenges Cu, Ni, etc., from pyroxenes undergoing retrogression, thus producing ore-fluids. A full analysis of a scapolite with 5.10 per cent S03 is given. Beryl is unstable in granulites but the rare Be mineral taaffeite (Al4Pf (Be,Fe)O3) with 5,50 per cent BeO occurs in central Australia as a pale green Tabular mineral easily confused for chloritoid in hand-specimen. Metamorphic differentiation and mobilization of primary ore concentrations are major factors controlling their post-granulite attitude and grade.

FORACO has developed proprietary equipment and techniques to deliver cost-effective LDC samples with outstanding core recovery.The FORACO LDC sampling system is hands free, with mechanised rod and corebarrel handing to minimise the risk of manual handling injuries. Sample volumes are six times PQ (the common industry standard for large core samples), with core recoveries consistently above 96 per cent in extremely difficult formations.Eight inch coring is a conventional coring system suited to hole depths up to 150 m. Underground operations commenced at Tower Colliery in late 1978 and the early prevailing mining conditions in the worked seam were considered poor as a result of high stress and geological disturbances. This suggested that outbursting activity may be a possibility. The colliery has since recorded a total of 13 individual outburst incidents, all of which have been associated with the same dyke and strike-slip fault zone. This paper depicts the geological conditions and presents the results of investigations undertaken at the time of these outbursts.

The Agnew Mine No. 1 Ventilation Shaft is the largest diameter shaft blind drilled in a hard rock mining environment. The selection of this method of shaft development was based on achieving an accelerated mine development and exploration programme. Drilling the shaft from a pre-sink depth of 73m commenced on March 22, 1982 and the shaft was stopped due to rig structural problems at a depth of 750m, 280m from the designed depth, on February 12, 1983, 137 days behind schedule. While problems with rig mechanical availability, cutter life and lost drilling tools in the hole hindered progress and escalated costs, penetration rates above prediction were achieved and both the speed and safety aspects of the method were well demonstrated.

During the first five years of operation, the Lihir gold mine has steadily increased plant throughput rate to over 4 Mtpa, well above the original design capacity of 2.8 Mtpa. Understanding how future variations in ore type impact on plant performance has been an integral part of LihirÆs development program. This paper discusses the key drivers for significant improvements to the plant, including a second oxygen plant, a pilot flotation plant, an autoclave heat recovery circuit, a pebble crushing circuit and additional autoclave feed pumping capacity. The result is a process plant with the flexibility to accommodate variations in ore type without significant loss of throughput.

As students progress further into a degree, the decision of vocation selection, and even more importantly û securing employment in a particular industry sector, can become quite daunting. However, with a little initiative, students can overcome these issues by not only researching what employment opportunities exist, but by applying for summer vacation employment. Undergraduate vacation employment, especially with a world-leading hydrometallurgy research organisation such as the Parker Centre, can dramatically alter a studentÆs perspective of particular industries and possibly even alter their selection of vocation pursuits upon graduating. Students can also use vacation employment to enhance their networking capabilities, technical skills and knowledge by dealing with challenging new topics such as sulfur dioxide leaching, which is also discussed in this article.

"There have always been development projects that fall short of expectations. In the last decade, we have seen more than the usual number of mining and oil/gas development projects taking significantly longer to develop and costing materially more than expected. The recent resource-equity market slump proves that investors are now far more cautious about investing new capital in the mineral and petroleum resources sector.What have we learned since 2005? Why have projects missed their targets? Why do investors often feel misled?Valuation of a project and the estimation of value is a more complex process than the evaluation of the merits of project development. The merit of project development can be clear from a prefeasibility evaluation, but this is no reason to skip the rigour of a feasibility study. The valuation of any project that is developed with any added risk should be discounted for this added risk.The development of a project impacts on other stakeholders, and the indirect cost of these impacts can have material implications for the cost structure, time and ultimate valuation of the project for its financial backers. The development of new projects (and thereby supply) can also have an impact on commodity prices, and therefore an impact on returns for financial backers.This paper will provide commentary on the author’s experiences and observations as a project developer and operator for 25 years, before becoming a project financier a decade ago.CITATION:Rozman, L I, 2016. The intention of this work was to con struct a machine on a pilot scale which could hoist a mixture of ore and water through a height of 300 metres and to operate the mach- ine to determine the parameters which affect the success of upscaling the machine to a pro- duction unit size. The investigation into this form of hoist- ing was stimulated by the interest shown by Roan Selection Trust (RST) into the Mills Pulse vessel system. Agreement was reached between these two parties that RST would in- vestigate the Mills System and determine if this system, shown to be successful on a Lab- oratory scale, would be successful as a pro- duction unit. The investigation has shown, however, that for practical reasons, the Mills System is not satisfactory. As a consequence, the RST system was invented and developed which on a pilot plant scale would be capable of lifting 7,000 tonnes of ore per month. The inventions included amongst other things, a valve to control the flow of the abrasive mixture of ore and water, a new pumping system employing a filter mechanism, and a method of changing the downward direction of flow of the pipe mixture through the plant to an upward flow in the hoisting pipe. The valve has operated to pressures equivalent to 300 metres

In the traditional analysis of airblast and ground vibration, it is often assumed that only that single blasthole possessing the maximum charge weight (or a small group of blastholes initiating in an 8 ms time window) will determine the peak level of airblast or vibration. This assumption is examined in light of waveform superposition, and is found to be unsound. More rational alternatives are given in which all blastholes (or a selected number of blastholes) are assumed to contribute, in varying degrees, to the peak vibration or airblast. However, it is also shown that there is generally no precise solution for determining the number of blastholes that contribute to the peak level. The technique of waveform superposition does not rely on evaluating which group of holes produced the peak, and so is the preferred method for prediction. Some numerical and analytical models of wave superposition for airblast and vibration are also reviewed and recent approaches discussed. The directionality of airblast, in particular, is analysed in detail using a new superposition model that is constructed of two submodels, onenumerical, the other analytical. This model shows that the airblast from even a single blasthole can be highly directional. The detail of this model is commercially sensitive and will not be discussed. Only results and a broad discussion will be given.

Two innovative ground reinforcement products have been developed for use in the mining industry. One of these products is a high strength polyethylene (HOPE) bar for use as a rib bolt in underground coal mining and as a corrosion proof tendon in open pit mines. The other product is a cable bolt (Ultrastrand) which demonstrates enhanced load transfer and is available in continuous lengths. Ultrastrand's exceptional in- situ performance and versatility makes it ideal for mechanised installation in both underground and surface mining operations. Details of these products are presented and results from labortaory and field trials are discussed.

The Pilbara region, located in the north-west of Western Australia, is significant as the second-largest source of iron ore on the planet. Iron ore mines owned and operated by Pilbara Iron are located within the Hamersley Basin. This paper refers to the Greater Paraburdoo mines, the 4WEST and 4EAST pits, located on the southern margin of the Hamersley Basin. The groundwater model refers to ephemeral watercourses: Seven Mile and Pirraburdoo creeks, which are adjacent to the two pits, and Ratty Springs, located upstream from 4WEST and within Pirraburdoo creek. The spring and creeks hold cultural heritage significance for local Aboriginal communities. Two of these, the Gobawarrah Minduarra Yinhawanga (GMY) and Innawonga native title claim groups, initiated hydrological work on the two creeks and Ratty Springs, with the aim of determining the affects of dewatering on the natural water flows of these systems. The numerical model used to simulate drawdown in the Pirraburdoo and Seven Mile Creeks was derived from PMWIN Pro software and covered an area of 77 km2. The modelling period was from January 1998 to December 2004, and the prediction period was from January 2005 to December 2015. The model has four layers and incorporated effects caused by mining voids, 4WEST and 4EAST pits, creek bed material, weathered bedrock below creeks and surrounding banded iron formations (BIF). The model has been calibrated using the trial-and-error method set down by Middelmis et al (2001). The current dewatering schedule (12 ML/day) in the 4WEST and 4EAST mining areas does not affect the water table levels in the adjacent creeks significantly or for any considerable periods of time. However, changes to mine plans may occur, for example, in response to changed commodity price and may lead to significant increase in rates of vertical advancement. This, in turn, affects dewatering schedules, as greater vertical advancement requires increased dewatering effort. When an accelerated mine plan is applied to the model and dewatering rates increased to 18 ML/day, drawdowns in the creeks are more noticeable. The model has therefore helped to indicate the extent to which increased dewatering rates may be acceptable, especially in terms of immediate and longer-term damage to riparian species, ie Melaleuca and Eucalypt. Predictions from the model may also allow mine planners to schedule decreased rates of vertical advancement, where these are required to meet environmental constraints.

In view of the lack of phase equilibria data of vanadium-bearing oxide system and the desirability of them for design or optimisation of vanadium extraction process, the phase equilibria relationships of V2O3-FeO-SiO2-CaO(15 mass per cent) system were determined experimentally and then an isothermal section phase diagram of this system was constructed. Totally, 81 samples of different composition were equilibrated at 1623 K for 48 hours in iron crucible under Ar atmosphere. The equilibrated samples were quenched quickly in cold water, and then the phase constituents of all the samples were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) combined with electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) measurements.

Sensor-based sorting methods to remove waste or for upgrading ore prior to downstream metallurgical processing is becoming more prevalent for mining operations. X-ray transmission (XRT) sorters are a popular choice for mineral processing plants since they can sort a wide variety of minerals. XRT sorters pass high intensity X-rays through particles to generate images of varying greyscale, based on their effective atomic density. The ore sorter then mechanically separates the particles using algorithms based on the images. A popular test currently used to evaluate the amenability of the ore to XRT sorting is to pass the particles through the sorter and obtain the greyscale images showing mineralogical differences. This test provides information on the mineralogical heterogeneity between ore particles for their separation. However, it does not provide an understanding of the actual mineralogical composition of the ore or information pertaining to which other minerals may respond in a similar manner, nor does it provide liberation information. This paper describes a test that combines high resolution X-ray micro Computer Tomography (CT) combined with QEMScan to obtain information about amenability of ore to XRT sorting and to obtain valuable information that can streamline metallurgical testwork programs. This test also provides information relating to particle thickness and associated X-ray attenuation coefficients, desired mineral presence and mineralogical information relating to associated minerals and clays to assist with developing sorting algorithms. Combining the CT and QEMScan can address many limitations of the current method to determine whether XRT sorting technology is appropriate for particular ores. Mineralogy information from QEMScan can identify incidences of; mineral encapsulation, problematic clays, detrimental minerals as well as calibrate the greyscale values of CT data. Additional 3D CT imaging carried out on cores provides spatial information of the minerals within the ore and mineral grades.

Mass Blasts are generally required at the completion of longhole stoping cycles to maximise the recovery of ore from a specific orebody. During the course of mining, the practice is to leave pillars of ore to support the opening left by extracted ore and to mitigate stresses from working areas of the stope. These pillars usually contain ore that has been included in the resource evaluation and is highly valuable to the mining operation. Due to their stressed nature, the removal of pillars by conventional blasting techniques, through small blasts, can result in pillars being reduced beyond their critical size and ultimately failing, rendering the ore unrecoverable. The AurionGold Kanowna Belle Gold Mine operates a Mine to Mill philosophy. This philosopy requires the fine tuning of blasting to provide the best possibe ore feed at the highest grade for mill productivity. This means that ore to the mill must be well fragmented from blasting that provides high extraction rates from draw points, with minimal dilution from overbreak or fall off, and sized to maximise SAG mill throughput. The AT04 Mass Blast contained significant ore reserves which were required to meet gold production targets. KBGB needed the AT04 Mass Blast to perform as well as if not better than conventional stope blasts to maintain mill production. This paper describes the circumstances, planning philosophy, techniques, including the use of Electronic Initiation Systems and Bulk Emulsion Explosives, and results that provided a highly successful outcome.

The fast rate of development in the micro technology industry is enabling computer based systems to be used in ways never considered before. Micro technology can be used to great advantage in the mining industry to improve both safety and productivity. The planned use of electronic 'IN/OUT' boards at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (ZC/NBHC) mines will provide a much improved system for checking that the mines are clear before firing. The provision of remote ocaputerised core logging facilities made possible by small remote data entry terminals will greatly improve the productivity of the personnel involved in all stages of core Logging.

The concept of Big Data refers to data sets that are so large, variable and/or complex that traditional data processing applications struggle to integrate the data for effective investigation, analysis and value generation. With advances in sensor technology and smarter equipment, the mining industry is experiencing Big Data, and in a different way to how the intelligence and marketing communities experience Big Data. Future mining will bring larger, more complicated and diverse data sets increasing the strain on traditional data integration and investigation techniques. Block caving is an important mining method for the extraction of massive, low-grade ore deposits due to its low operating cost and high production potential, given the right orebody geometry and ground conditions. This paper focuses on block caving due to its increasing popularity and importance in the future economic extraction of multiple commodities. The block cave mining system (BCMS) is a complex interrelation of factors, and due to the reliance on natural processes within the system, it is one of the least understood mining methods. Obtaining information on the factors within the BCMS generates large, complex data sets on various time scales. Each sensor network within the BCMS combines spatial and temporal information with tens to hundreds of recorded parameters. Data sets are quickly moving from multidimensional to n-dimensional. Optimisation of the BCMS is only possible through a holistic analysis approach, thus involving the integration of multiple, diverse, n-dimensional data sets (Big Data). This paper presents a current example BCMS Big Data situation involving 12 sources of information with differences in volume, data format and frequency of data generation. This suitability of virtual reality scientific visualisation (VRSV) as a solution to BCMS Big Data interpretation difficulties is then discussed. These 12 data sets can be effectively integrated using VRSV for intuitive and accelerated investigation of the BCMS. Potential future Big Data within the BCMS is presented involving 20 sources of information resulting from our increased need for monitoring and advancements in technology. Current methods of defining queries may not be suitable within these future complex, multidimensional data sets, and the potential of artificial intelligence algorithms within this system is discussed. These advancements in technology and machine learning lead to the requirement of live data acquisition and analysis. It is shown that coke has a major influence on the pattern of operation and on the aerodynamics of the blast furnace and that the physical and chemical characteristics of coke, at each stage in the furnace, determine its ability to satisfy requirements for iron production and coke economy. Analysis of coke sampled from operating furnaces is compared with furnace behaviour. The available data suggests the importance of segregation, strength, size change and chemical degradation of coke on furnace performance. Correlations are presented for coke breakdown ratio as a function of coke rate and hearth diameter which shows that breakdown increases with hearth diameter and with decreasing coke rate. It is also shown that the Micum tests do not reflect the coke strength in a predictable way and that solution reactions appear to play an important role in giving rise to a pitting effect on the cell walls of the coke with the resultant deterioration in coke properties. The catalytic effect of activating substances, such as alkalis, is noted and results are presented which show the effect of carbon solution on the coke strength. The importance of coke in the stack and in the bosh is discussed and flooding results are presented for BSC furnaces which show the probable driving limits for the furnaces considered. It is also shown that coke sampled from different tuyeres in a furnace gives quite different flooding limits. Other applications of the coke test work at BSC are also noted and the relevant objectives listed.

Ridgeway Deeps is a block cave (BC) located down dip of the operating Ridgeway sublevel cave (SLC) mine. The BC is located approximately 210 m vertically below the lowest SLC level and approximately 1100 m below surface. Due to the mine layout containing a number of common pieces of key infrastructure the activities of both were interlinked.When investigating project construction options for the BC, a number of potential risks were identified including a conflict of priorities between operational and project deliverables and the varying safety and work methods between an owner mining approach in the SLC and a potential contractor workforce in the BC. This led to a review of the construction philosophy and the opportunity to utilise the existing SLC workforce as the basis of all activities in the mine. It was identified that a number of synergies existed with the current SLC operators and mine supervision including common work practices and the opportunity to build on the unique SLC skills of the operators and supervisors which could then be used at other Newcrest caving mines.With the commitment to this philosophy of building on the existing SLC crews and supervision the number of employees reporting through the superintendent underground operations grew from 95 to 245. This increase led to a restructuring of the reporting and work requirements of the superintendent, foremen and shift bosses. In order for the foreman and shift bosses to focus on running the larger crew numbers for the full 12 hour shift the mine superintendent became a pseudo human resources manager taking over all non-mine focused activities including overtime allocation and work and behavioural performance management. In simple terms, ensuring there were competent bums on seats when and where required. As the additional workers were recruited to top up the existing employee numbers, their employment history was used to place them in the most suitable roles. For example, those with building industry experience were placed on the civil construction crews and those with a farming background were used as truck drivers, nippers or on the service crews. To cope with the increased number of new starters a number of key personnel were seconded from the crews into the training group to act as on shift trainers. This initially caused a reduction in mine performance as the main operators were reassigned but it proved a valid move as the time for new operators to reach acceptable levels was significantly reduced with safe operating standards being maintained. This paper discusses how the Ridgeway Deeps Project was delivered on time and under budget whilst at the same time retaining its position globally as an operation to be benchmarked against.

The Paddington Gold Mine ties within the Norseman-Wiluna greenstone belt, in the celebrated Eastern Goldfields province of the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia. Regionally, tropical to subtropical weathering has effected development of a prominent regolith and a deep lateritic profile. Detailed examination of the clay mineralogy, largely from a single drill hole which traversed the original Paddington I deposit, outlined three separate, vertically gradational assemblages, which are, in part, rock-type dependant. These include; 1. kaolinite with minur to trace quantities of sericite/illite (0-22m), 2. smectite and/or interstratified clay minerals, together with variable amounts of kaolinite, relic chlorite and illite/sericite (22-81m), and 3. chlorite and sericite (> 81m). Near surface, kaolinitic assemblages may be directly correlated with the intensity of lateritization, whereas smectite and interstratified clays from intermediate zones appear in association

Leaving the relatively simple life on a uni student and venturing off in to the outside working world is a big step. There are two paths to follow, the æContikiÆ style graduate program where you pick up your new lease vehicle and set forth on two to three years of planned activities, or can pack everything into one bag, stick a copy of æthe rough guideÆ in your pocket, and set off on your own graduate adventure. I took the path less travelled.The less followed method of developing yourself isnÆt for everybody. Parts of the journey are difficult and sometimes it feels hopeless, but itÆs all a learning experience. Along the way you might not get to all the graduate ætourist stopsÆ like dragline, truck-shovel, or drill and blast. But youÆll see most of them and pick up a lot more of the local culture such as people management, operational knowledge, quality control, and the black arts of project financial management.
