This paper outlines a comparison of heavy liquid and heavy suspension separation methods for iron ore characterisation.As part of Arrium MiningÆs program to improve its knowledge of ore types being processed in its two hematite ore beneficiation plants (OBP), metallurgical evaluation of hematite feed for the upgrading process has become a major focus.Iron ore deposits almost always contain more than one valuable (and relatively dense) iron mineral. Iron ores are found with a range of iron contents, giving rise to density variations.At present the industry relies on heavy liquid separation techniques for the evaluation of iron ore samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes. There are only a few high-density liquids available, which are both high-cost and highly toxic.Low-toxicity solutions that can be utilised at relative densities up to 3.0 have been developed. However, highly-toxic organic liquids are required presently to achieve relative densities beyond 3.0.Bromoform which has a specific gravity (SG) of 2.89, and diiodomethane (SG 3.31) are commonly used; both present significant health and safety hazards.æClericiÆs solutionÆ (mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate) provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0. ClericiÆs solution is highly toxic and testing is currently conducted by a limited number of laboratories worldwide.An alternative to ClericiÆs solution and organic liquids is a low-toxicity, high-SG, suspension technique, which has been demonstrated successfully for heavy mineral sands. This heavy suspension method employs mixtures of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstate (LST) solutions.Heavy liquid separation is not commonly used as part of routine iron ore feed characterisation due to the expensive, toxic and time consuming nature of the technique. Our results show that the heavy suspensions method can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separation and are outlined and results compared with results using ClericiÆs solution presented.Heavy suspension technique provides a theoretical/absolute separation of a particular sample. By placing an iron ore sample in a suspension of a particular density, it produces two products: a sink fraction and a float fraction. As iron oxides-hydroxyoxides are denser than the gangue minerals associated with the ore, particles that have high iron content will sink and the particles with gangue association will float. This process is repeated over several densities, thus also enabling separation of the constituent iron ore phases. A theoretical grade and a theoretical mass recovery can be calculated. With these calculations, a grade-mass recovery curve can be constructed for any element that is of interest.This type of characterisation can be used to either prepare OBP feed-piles of known processing characteristics, or to benchmark the performance of the process against what can be theoretically achieved on a continuous basis.CITATION:Begelhole, J, Jasper, J and Koroznikova, L, 2013. The orebodies at Kambalda are complexly faulted, folded and intruded. It is realized that the ore reserve calculations will be wrong and steps are taken to minimise the errors. The calculations are a combination of computer data handling and manual input. Initially Geological Ore Reserves are calculated and then production data and experience are used to produce a Planned Mining Reserve. At all stages maximum professional judgement is incorporated. The basis of the calculation is the polygonal method of area estimation, and production reconciliations together with the style of data available indicate that it is a most suitable technique. It is also a tech- nique that is easily communicated to all levels from operators to management.

A low grade copper flotation tailing from Telfer containing 1.2% Cu as chalcocite and cuprite and 5 gt-t Au was leached with ammonia, cyanide and ammonia-cyanide mixtures to extract copper and/or gold. Direct cyanidation extracted both copper and gold but consumed about 30 kgt 1 NaCN. Pre-leaching the tailing with an aerated ammonia solution containing 28 kgt 1NH3 and 17 kgtl(NHa)2S0a at pH 10 readily extracted up to 95% Cu in about 6 hours under optimum conditions. However pH and total ammonia concentration were critical factors. Subsequent cyanidation ex- tracted 80% Au using 6 kgt NNaCN. Ammonia-cyanide mixtures werefound to selectively leach gold over copper depending on the concentration and relative proportion of NH3 and CN. The best composition for leaching up to 80% Au from Teller tailing was 1.6 kgt t NaCN and 1.1 kgf 1 NH3 in the presence of 0.3 kgt t Cue+. Such a mixture left only 50 mgL-1Cu in the final solution after precipitation of some of the initially dissolved copper.

Up until June 1988, Mount Thorley Coal Handling and Preparation Plant disposed of tailings by two methods. Approximately half of the plant tailings was mechanically dewatered by solid bowl centrifuges mixed with plant reject and was subsequently disposed in mine overburden spoils; the remainder was pumped to tailings ponds. Both future mine planning and environmental constraints could not allow for the long term construction of more tailings ponds so, following evaluation of available dewatering technology, belt press filters were selected for the treatment of tailings in excess of the capacity of the existing solid bowl centrifuges. Commission of the four 2.5 metre wide belt press filters soon showed that marked differences in performance were experienced when treating different coal seams. Further analysis showed that the coal tailings from different seams were quite different in terms of clay mineralogy, and these differences could be correlated with varying degrees of filter performance. Poor filter performance was experienced with coal tailings rich in sodium montmorillinite clays. A number of variables were investigated including in-line mechanical mixing of flocculant and feed slurry, cation exchange reagents such as gypsum, and upstream addition of cationic flocculant. In order to achieve satisfactory performance on the worst tailings, a combination of all of the above was required. In this paper, the reasons for selection of belt press filters and the program of investigations and testwork required to arrive at satisfactory belt press filter performance for the treatment of troublesome bentonitic rich tailings are discussed.

Obtaining a representative sample of bulk materials in process industries is critical to providing valid data for process control and custody transfer (valuation). The accuracy of a sample, that is to say how well the sample represents the material in the process, is directly related to how well the process can be controlled and to how much a product may be worth. Sampling accuracy then is in fact related to bottom line profitability.Sampling theory offers information and equations on how to take a representative sample from a process, however, the actual practice of extracting a sample from the process can be more of an art.Key sampling variables include product specifications such as bulk density, particle distribution, material conveyance, practical sampler location, sampler type and sample frequency and volume/mass.This paper discusses basic sampling theory, sampling methods, types of samplers, how to develop a ‘real world’ sampling system and current manual and automated samplers.Key points include ‘practical precision and variance’, material properties, flow properties, direct sampling versus indirect sampling, sampler types and applications.CITATION:Powalisz, J E, 2014. The quality of mine planning decisions ultimately depends on reliable estimates of the characteristics of the orebody. The quant- ifiable factors such as grades or thickness can be estimated from field data gathered from outcrops or exploratory drillholes. Since outcrop data is necessarily limited to the periphery of a deposit, extensive drilling generally is required. This paper outlines a method for selecting the number and location of additional exploratory boreholes using an iterative procedure based on a mathematical optimization concept called fixed point theory. The method is illustrated through its application to an exploratory drilling program for a coal mine where optimized locations gave a lower estimate of regional and block variances than a manual Choice.

Production sharing and cost apportionment in joint ventures is commonplace in Australasia today and elsewhere. It is a recognised convention that, with the exception of a free carry situation, joint venture participants usually share the proceeds of the joint venture in direct proportion to their respective participating interest, after having first paid its respective cash calls, in advance, to cover the projectÆs ongoing operating and capital cost requirements.In surface mines, the parties simply pay their way and take their proceeds in this manner. In underground mines, the situation is no different, though treatment of capital, depreciation and tax may differ between the parties. A common feature in many cases is the creation of a joint venture entity to conduct the business. This entity then collects cash from the parties, banks it, employs the staff, runs the operation, provides reports and pays out the proceeds. This convention appears to be relatively simple in application. In practice, it has been known to be complicated in the situation where the participants take their product at the mine gate and undertake their own marketing and selling arrangements. A more complex situation presents itself where the joint venture tenement boundary with an unrelated third party straddles an economic deposit. In this scenario, both the joint venture parties and the third party may wish to mine the deposit, sharing some infrastructure and costs, yet taking their own product as it is produced. A case study outlining such a situation is presented in the paper, outlining firstly how the major cost categories were identified and treated for cost apportionment purposes. Secondly, a mechanism for the equitable apportionment of product is suggested. Finally, issues such as timing and cost reporting are dealt with, together with a checklist of points which should be considered when a similar situation might arise in the future.

The C.S.A. copper lead zinc mine, located seven miles north of Cobar in Central Western New South Wales, is the largest known mineral occurrence in the Cobar Mining Field. Hosted by the steeply west dipping, west facing sediments of the Cobar Group, the generally discordant orebodies occur within a strike width of 600 ft and an overall strike length of 1200 ft. They comprise lenticular steeply north pitching and east dipping zones of sulphide mineralisation which range in composition from massive pyrite-sphalerite-pyrrhotite--galena to less massive pyrite- pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite varieties. The thinly bedded siltstones, shales and graywackes hosting the mineralisation appear to have derived many of their constituents from volcanic sourcesä They have been metamorphosed to the greenschist facies of regional metamorphism. At least two stages of deformation and folding have occurred. The first stage folded the rocks on a south pitching fold axis into their present configuration, and super- imposed a strong axial plane cleavage which subsequently guided the emplacement of the mineralisation. The second stage of deformation is considered to have controlled the zonal distrib- ution of the orebodies and the appropriate fold axis appears to coincide with the long axis of the orebodies.

Nickel sulphide precipitated from waste liquors at the Yabulu plant of Queensland Nickel Pty Ltd was pressure leached under various conditions. Leaching at 130¦C and 700 kPa of air dissolved 95 per cent of the nickel as the sulphate in less than 2 h. Leaching at 130¦C and 350 kPa of oxygen dis- solved 95 per cent of the nickel in less than 1 h. Dissolution was faster with oxygen than with the equivalent pressure of air. Crystallization of hydrated nickel sul- phate from the resulting clarified leachate is readily achieved. Because the sulphide pre- cipitate also contains minor amounts of iron, copper and cobalt, the crystallization product contains these metals in excess of the amounts required for electrolytic-grade nickel sul- phate. This grade of product could only be produced if the contaminants were removed prior to crystallization. Alternatively, the "crude" nickel sulphate could find a market as a feed for the electrolytic production of Ni-Fe coatings.

Longwall mining in Australia is approaching maturity. Longwall production from 'state of the art' Australian longwall mines now rivals similar US based longwall operations. Regrettably however, Australian gate road development rates in general fall short of the required development to longwall production ratios that are required to sustain annual longwall production capabilities. By contrast, most US based longwall mines achieve the required development to longwall production ratios to sustain their longwalls. This is despite many having to drive three heading longwall panel gate headings to meet regulatory requirements.

The paper describes the detailed hydrogeological studies carried out prior to the sinking of twin shafts at British Coal's new mine at Asfordby, Leicestershire, UK. The test methods for assessing potential groundwater inflows to the shafts are discussed and details are given of the ground freezing scheme employed through the major aquifer zone in the Sherwood Sandstone at a depth of 375 metres. During shaft sinking pressure recovery tests were carried out to further assess potential inflows and the results are compared with those from the surface tests prior to sinking.

The ores of the Golden Mile exhibit considerable complexity. As a consequence, the operating company, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), considered it important to develop a coherent database of information describing the nature of the many ore lodes in terms of (1) rock properties and mineralogical content, including relative proportions, grain size, associations and deportment of key elements between minerals, (2) the relative behaviour of consituent minerals in various stages of processing and (3) the nature of the final products and key intermediate streams. The paper describes a sequence of metallurgical tests covering comminution, flotation, gravity concentration, leaching and calcining, carried out on three lodes of the Golden Mile. Key samples generated by the testing were subjected to comprehensive size-by-elemental assaying and QEM*SEM mineralogical determinations of sulphide and precious metal associations. Significant differences between lodes were identified, and the impact of these differences on processing is discussed.

Wiluna Mining Corporation are progressively re-entering the old Wiluna underground mining complex. The existing underground was abandoned in 2013 by previous owners and left to flood with water levels reaching above the East Pit portal and Happy Jack Pit portal and up to 300 m below surface in the Bulletin underground. Re-entering the mine commenced in 2017 with dewatering of the Bulletin decline. The underground development had been previously supported with friction bolts, with weld mesh in places. Until mid-2021 rehabilitation requirements were based on an external visual inspection of the installed ground support scheme. However, several incidents involving falls of ground due to corroded bolts have occurred during this time, showing that this approach was inadequate. The challenge the operation faced was should the entire decline be rehabilitated, the implication being not only a large rehabilitation cost but also the impact of severe delays to the mining schedule. The question was asked can the operation better understand the level of corrosion damage and potentially optimise rehabilitation requirements. A proposal to use a systematic approach to assess corrosion by environmental condition mapping, visual external corrosion assessment, and internal corrosion assessment via borehole camera inspections was provided and accepted by Wiluna Mining Corporation. The objective of this work was to produce a three-dimensional map showing the degree of corrosion on the reinforcement systems in the capital infrastructure, this would then be used to risk assess and prioritise rehabilitation requirements. This paper summarises the approach, methodology and results that provided the Wiluna mine planning team with information to enable planning of resources and budget to justify priorities of rehabilitation.

To maintain copper recoveries and maximise production at the Sepon Copper Operation it is crucial to control the amount of copper entering the leaching circuit. This requires close control of blending of the multiple ROM stockpiles to achieve the desired head grade. Grade variability in the ROM stockpiles can lead to significant variation in the processing plant copper feed grade.Head grade sampling from the milling circuit at Sepon is complicated due to milling in leach solution to preserve the water balance. Copper is present in both liquid and solid forms and copper in the added milling solution has to be accounted for. This leads to difficulties in manual head sampling which also introduces delays due to sample preparation and assay turnaround. On-stream analysis is complex because of the solution and solid copper and the need to account for recycled copper solution.This paper describes the complexity of feed grade management at Sepon and the application of on-belt analyser technology to assist in the control of copper metal throughput.

The paper describes the geotechnical as- pects of design and construction of two 12 m diameter concrete lined tunnels from the start of design to completion of construction. Prob- lems occurred due to delay in supply of essen- tial rock support materials from overseas and alternative methods using locally available materials were developed. Several major rock- falls and rock movements occurred and remedial measures are outlined.

Since early 1968 the Bureau of Mineral Resources (B.M.R.) has carried out VLF-EM test surveys in various parts of Australia and Papua. The aim of the work, primarily, was to examine the effect- iveness of the method as an exploration tool under a variety of Australian conditions. Selection of test areas was determined by the availability of geological, geophysical and drilling information and by the desirability to include a variety of physical variables such as depth of weathering and topography. The aim of the present account is to review the results of this work and to make an assessment of the method available to the mining industry. The author wishes to acknowledge considerable assistance both by way of data and discussion provided by Messrs. Automatic sampling and weighing of copper sulphide concentrate produced on Bougainville Island (PNG) is described. Contained metal weights gave satisfactory agreement with buyer's results after the introduction of polyethylene lined sealed aluminium foil bags for transport and storage of assay samples. Paper bags used previously for this purpose permitted oxidation of the sulphide concentrate and thus caused lower assay values.

Resolution Copper Mining LLC (RCML) is one of the largest undeveloped high-grade porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits in the world, with an orebody at depths of approximately 2000 m beneath post-mineralisation cover. With a vision to develop a large-scale, low-cost operating mine, the project is designed as a micropanel cave with an advanced undercut.In September 2014, RCML began a study focusing on identifying and selecting the best production cases to eventually reach full production (120 kt/d). To achieve this, a methodology was developed that allows the fast evaluation of a large number of production schedules.Dassault Systèmes GEOVIA was commissioned to enhance the Footprint Finder program for batch scheduling panel cave production. The tonnage and grade schedules produced by Footprint Finder were compared to schedules developed using personal computing block caving (PCBC™). The inputs to Footprint Finder were then adjusted to achieve a reasonable correlation with the PCBC™ schedules.The enhanced Footprint Finder program was used to batch-process nearly 54 000 schedules using 20 elevations, 17 shutoff grades, four heights of draw, two different copper grades (modelled and upside), two layout refinements within the existing footprint and a variety of production ramp-up rates to 120 kt/d. The study team developed processes to analyse large amounts of data, to assist in selecting a matrix of the best schedules for detailed assessment using PCBC™. Three hundred PCBC™ schedules were developed.The detailed trade-offs between the scenarios is currently underway with promising results. Before presentIng my address I wish to acknowledge the honour which has been conferred on me by my appointment to the position of President of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.It is a matter of great concern to us all to find our Empire at war. I am confident that, as was the case in the war of 1914-1918, members of this Institute and of kindred Institutes and Associations will contribute in full to the Empire's needs and that in the end our cause shall triumph.I think it appropriate that I should take as the subject of my address that of the Broken Hill Lead-Silver-Zinc Industry. The subject matter of this address has been confined to the operations of Mining, Ore Dressing, Lead Smelting and Refining and production of Electrolytic Zinc in Australasia. The review of the Broken Hill Lead-SilverZinc Industry would not, of course, be complete without reference to those Australian industries which trace their origin to the Broken Hill field, but· it is thought that an outline of these industries would make thIs review too extensive.HISTORICALMany efforts have been made to translate the early history of Broken Hill and its subsequent growth throughout the years into one of the wor~d's most famous mining fields in the form of a simple story.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss briefly the problems encountered in designing and sinking No 7 shaft, and to present the methods employed in the operation.The illustrations accompanying the paper show the details of the construction of the equipment used in completing No 7 shaft, consequently the descriptions appearing in the text are brief outlines only. Mineral leases Nos 7 and 8, held by the Broken Hill South Limited, comprise an area of 69.5 acres. The length of the holding is approximately 2500 ft.The western orebodies, which are the main producing masses, enter the property at the northern bonndary. Generally, the dip of the orebody is to the west, and the pitch to the south, but local variations occur and even a reversal of pitch has been noticed. The angle of dip is approximately 70 degrees and the angle of pitch 45 degrees.
