Trial ore production began at the Hilton Mine in 1987 with ore being trucked into Mount Isa for treatment at the Lead/zinc Concentrator. The expansion of output from the Hilton mine required additional concentrator capacity which led to the design and construction of the Hilton Concentrator. Systematic laboratory and Pilot Plant testwork dating back to 1968 to develop a flowsheet and reagent regime suited to the varied and generally complex mineralogy of the Hilton ore was successfully concluded with a Pilot Plant trial using a sulphoxy based sphalerite depression system in early 1988.In May 1988, a decision was made to build a 750 000 t/y concentrator with some novel technological and capital-efficient features. The Hilton Concentrator commenced operations in December 1989 reaching target grinding rates and metallurgical performance by mid-1990. Current ore treatment rate is 800 000 t/y.Lead concentrates assaying 43 - 48 per cent Pb are combined with the Lead/Zinc Concentrator lead concentrates and smelted at Mount Isa. Zinc and Low Grade Middlings (LGM) concentrates are filtered in the zinc filter plant at Isa with those from the Lead/Zinc Concentrator and then railed to Townsville for export or treatment in Australia.

The Mons Cupri Cu-Pb-Zn deposit is situated within a complex Archaean volcanic sequence dominated by rhyolitic fragmental rocks. This sequence is underlain by a 150 m group of rhyolitic ash flow tuffs with minor conglomerate and sandstone, and is overlain by approximately 180 m of dacite and andesite flows. The Mons Cupri sequence itself consists of several elongate or circular rhyolite domes, flanked by rhyolitic fragmental rocks ranging up to 400 m in thickness away from the domes. The lithology of clasts (typically 1 cm to 1.5 m in size) provides strong evidence that the flanking fragmental unit was derived by explosive eruptions associated with the rhyolite domes. An approximately 15 m thick shale horizon, bleached and silicified at its base, overlies both the rhyolite domes and the frag- mental unit. A south-dipping chloritic pipe-like body, with near-surface dimensions of 1,000 by 250 m and narrowing at depth to produce a cone-shaped cross section, lies within the rhyolitic frag- mental rocks about 250 m north of the largest rhyolite'dome in the Mons Cupri vicinity. Its east west elongation parallels that of the rhyolite dome. Ghost fragments indicate that the material in this fissure is a severely chloritized derivative of the rhyolitic frag- mental unit. The paper presents the results of a series of pull out tests performed on roof reinforcement systems currently being adopted in mines in Australia 7mm wire, dividag bar, 15.2mm strand cable, and birdcage cable. The study also investigated the load deformation chara- cteristics and the various design parameters controlling the effectiveness of a cable-grout system. Suggestions for continued work are Highlighted.

The Pacific Mobile Belt (PMB) is characterized by old origin and complex evolution both in time and space. As the global structure, the PMB is a narrow tectonic region dividing two plan-etary hemispheres, viz. the Pacific and IndoAfro-Atlantic ones, the relative shifting of which defines the character of many geodynamic processes in this belt. The PMB features inhomogeneity of structure, special matter composition characteristics, sharply broken-out topography, and intensive fields. Generalized anomalies of the gravitational field closely correspond to the PMB boundaries defined by the real features, i.e. the andesite line and distribution areals of Mesozoic-Cenosoic granitoids. The belt boundary position is controlled also by seismic velocity anomalies at a depth of down to 200 km. The modern PMB deformation is defined by the left-hand equatorial shift and rotation of the Pacific Ocean counterclockwise. This rotation is non-uniform in time and of an oscillating character. The motive forces of the phenomenon are considered.

"This paper provides an assessment of the current challenges in strategic mine planning and design and suggested approaches for addressing them. The specific challenges covered are: realistic quantification of downstream processes applied to orebody models to provide an integrated approach to mine design and optimisation modelling, estimation and simulation of geometallurgical variables and their integration into resource and reserve estimation and mine planning modelling, estimation and simulation of new variables for new forms of mining – deep mining, particularly block caving, and solution mining flexibility in planning and design to manage risk and minimise its impact information technology (IT) infrastructure and platforms for rapid online data collection, storage, access and processing.Most of these challenges require new types of data, variables, modelling and estimation methods. Foremost among the new types of variables and data are geometallurgical and dynamic rock mass characterisation variables. This paper outlines software development and design work carried out by Mincom Pty Ltd in collaboration with Capricorn Coal Management (CAPCOAL) for computer based design of rehabilitated strip mine landforms at German Creek Mine. Current developments and future application areas for this software are also discussed in relation to other mines in Central Queensland. The development program was initiated in response to statutory requirements placed on mining companies in 1990 to produce a five year Plan of Operations which was to include a contour plan of the final rehabilitated mine landform at the end of the five year planning period. This plan was to be submitted to the Department of Resource Industries (DRI) by 1 December 1990. Due to the limited time given to prepare the plan, a work program was formulated in collaboration with Mincom Pty Ltd to develop suitable software to carry out the design work and provide the required plans and quantities. The software had to include computer based methods to allow design of the proposed landform in line with the rehabilitation strategy adopted by CAPCOAL at the time.

The Cadjebut orebody is a MississippiValleyType (MVT) zinc-lead deposit, and is located approximately 80 km southeast of Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It is one of five zinc rich orebodies discovered by BHP Minerals in the region.The participation in the Cadjebut Joint Venture is BHP Minerals limited (Manager), 58 per cent and Billiton Australia Limited, 42 per cent.The mineralisation is contained in gently dipping dolomitised limestone sediments (part of the Lennard Shelf carbonate sequence) with an orebody width of between 60 and 120 m and a strike length of approximately 3 km. The deposit consists of two thin, stratabound shallow dipping orebodies, one overlying the other, to provide discrete but not independent mining areas. The orebody contains approximately 2.1 million tonnes of recoverable ore at an approximate grade of 12 per cent zinc and four per cent Lead.

The paper presents an overview of the mining industry of Papua New Guinea. Although the Bougainville problem is still unresolved, new mines like Ok Tedi, Misima and Porgera, which have come on stream during recent past, have raised hopes of sustained growth period in the industry. Kutubu Oilfield is also being developed in the Southern Highlands and the oil production has commenced from July 1992. Government revenue from these mega projects will increase five-fold during 1993 and 1994. A new mine which is being planned is the fabulous Lihir Deposit, on an island renowned to be full of gold. Gold occurs within a volcano which still contains high temperature ground water because the system which created the deposit is still geothermally active.In Papua New Guinea, problems of environmental management are far easier to tackle than those of a socio-political and economic nature involving compensation payments to the landowners and the distribution of royalties and taxes between the national and provincial governments. At the socio-political level, the country has not been able to resolve the problems of land rights versus mining rights. Whenever mining starts in a big way, it raises people's expectations to a very high level, which then becomes the focal point of dispute between landowners, provincial governments, national government and mining companies. A new system called 'Forum' has been tried to bring all parties together and son out the issues. The system appears to be working well in new mines like Ok Icdi, Porgera, Misima and Kutubu Oilfields.

Independent Project Analysis (IPA) is in the business of benchmarking the performance of capital projects on behalf of owner companies in the processing and extractive industries. IPA assesses between 500 and 800 projects each year. The projects are conducted globally and range in size from about $1 million to over $30 billion. Using the data, we are able to benchmark the performance of Australian projects against the rest of the world. This presentation focuses on the performance of large (greater than $100 million) projects that involve chemical or thermal processing.We regularly hear calls for more processing to be conducted in Australia but on the other hand industry leaders are concerned about the poor success rate of solids processing projects in Australia. Data gathered by IPA indicates that there is good reason for the concern. Out of a sample of 31 large processing projects conducted in Australia, 23, or 74 percent, were classed as failures. This performance is significantly worse than for similar projects in other parts of the world. The presentation analyses why the performance is worse and demonstrates that many of the reasons behind the failures were manageable by the project team. Furthermore, members of the project teams on at least half the failed projects knew that the projects were on a path to failure before the project was authorised but could not be heard.The presentation discusses how large projects that involve process design and, in many cases, new technology, need to be set up for success. *This is an abstract only. The oil crisis had repercussions throughout the world and most importantly on mining, where the drive to reduce the use of liquid fossil fuel led directly to the appearance and subsequent growth in the design of mobile crushers in late 1970s early 1980s, which heralded a new era in both quarrying and mining. Even though mobile crushing has now become common, even preferred in the quarrying industry, this has not been the case in mining. This paper looks at why, in spite of the initial optimism, this technology has yet to gain full acceptance in the mining industry. The paper examines some of the problems that have been encountered in the past and offers suggestions as to how they can be avoided by applying the appropriate technology. It then takes a look at the successful application of the semi-mobile in-pit crushing system used by Italian Thai Development Company (ITD), on the Mae Moh Phase 5 contract and examines how the techniques used successfully there could be applied to the industry at large.

Beach sand minerals from the volcanic rock structures of the Drakensberg, Kwazulu-Natal, (South Africa) have been processed. Screening, flotation, spiral concentration and magnetic separation methods were used either separately or successively in an attempt to concentrate monazite minerals. Products thereof and those from a long time (up to 72 hours) microwaves treatment of the finally produced ilmenite-bearing minerals have been studied using the M÷ssbauer effect spectroscopy. The 57Fe M÷ssbauer effect spectroscopy has demonstrated its versatility and power in monitoring the ilmenite internal reduction mechanism and products and, in characterising the iron-bearing phases contained in different products from the beach sand minerals processing. Microwaves heating of ilmenite for up to 38 hours reduced internally the Fe3+ from the ilmeniteÆs structure. A more prolonged microwaves heating (up to 72 hours) re-oxidised the mineral. 61 per cent natural ilmenite recovery was obtained in the floating products of a spiral concentrated -212+106 ¦m screened and beach sand minerals fraction. A preferential concentration of hematite with a 62 per cent recovery was found in the sinking products while the combination of screening-spiral separation-magnetic separation and flotation yielded a floating product with the highest ilmenite and the highest hematite abundanceÆs (71 per cent, 19 per cent respectively). A natural ilmenite containing 87 per cent ilmenite and 13 per cent hematite could be produced and extracted from the sinking products of the flotation process collected subsequently to the spiral concentration and the initial screening.

A diesel engine with a misfiring cylinder is likely to break down in a short time when the engine is used without maintenance. The authors have developed a method of detecting the occurrence of cylinder misfiring and specifying the misfiring cylinder by using wavelet analysis and statistical analysis on the root mean square (r.m.s.) values of two kinds of acceleration waveforms. This detection method is considered superior to traditional methods, which require several accelerometers, especially in terms of simplicity. Since the development of the method, research has been conducted on semi-automatic processing of measured signals and signal transmission from the worksite to a remote office. Field tests confirmed that 1 + 105 points of dynamic data could be transmitted through the mobile multimedia network within 15 minutes, and the time for signal processing was within 15 minutes. Final determination on the condition of a diesel engine in heavy machinery could be achieved within 30 minutes. Shortened processing time is expected by improvement of the processing software.

The grinding of ore to a size that is conducive to the extraction of minerals by leaching or flotation is an essential and expensive component of most mineral-processing operations. Overgrinding results in reduced flotability of the minerals, as well as problems in the filtration and thickening processes, while undergrinding leads to a product in which the minerals have not been exposed, and cannot be leached or floated effectively. Furthermore, coarse material causes settling in thickeners and agitator tanks. It is therefore essential, from the perspective of both operational and extraction efficiency, to grind the ore to an optimum size fraction. A well-run milling circuit will yield a product within a narrow size band and at a high throughput. Although the effective operation and control of milling circuits with their many operating parameters is widely acknowledged as a complex as well as a critically important operation, the benefits of such control are difficult to quantify. This is due to the difficulties in relating more stable operation to increased recovery of the valuable components in downstream processes.

The continued exploration of the major brown coal deposits of the Latrobe Valley has resulted not only in the discovery of huge additional reserves, but also in new concepts of the stratigraphy and structure of the coal seams in that area. The author sets out his interpretation of the new information which has become available over the last six years.A section of the paper is devoted to the quality of the coal. As the chemical composition of these brown coals has been discussed in some detail by previous authors, only the major constituents and the heat value of the coal are dealt with in this paper. Some of the variations in quality are related to the geological structure.The occurrence of underground water and its relation to open cuts is dealt with briefly.INTRODUCTIONThe Latrobe Valley Tertiary Basin is almost entirely covered by a layer of Post Tertiary sediments which mask the underlying rocks and their structures. As a result, the geological understanding of this area has had to await the comprehensive drilling campaign in search of brown coal, initiated by the Victorian Mines Department in 1917, and subsequently carried on by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. The first detailed geology was published by Herman (1922), and this was followed some 25 years later by papers by Edwards, and later Thomas and Baragwanath, to which reference will be made later in this paper. Herman included a section on the geology of the Latrobe Valley in his book Brown Coal, which was published in 1952.Since that time a considerable amount of new information has become available from the continued drilling carried out by the Commission. In addition, geophysical work carried out by the Commonwealth Bureau of Mineral Resources has assisted in the defining of geological structures in the area.

Rock Discontinuities ("joints") affect blasting results. An investigation was carried out to understand if blast parameter such as spacing needs to be altered with the change in joint direction. Small scale laboratory studies in jointed limestone blocks have been carried out. It is shown that optimum spacing is variable with the "joint" orientations. Evidence is presented from field studies in four limestone quarries supporting laboratory studies. Reasons for success and failure of widespacing technique is also provided. Only with suitable orientations of "joints: widespacing is successful.

The European Union has listed vanadium (V) as one of the critical raw materials for the transition to a future green society, as stated in the Critical Raw Material Act, written by Grohol and Veeh (2023). In the steelmaking industry based on V-containing iron ore, V is a possible by-product from the slag. A requirement for slags to be suitable for V extraction is a V content preferably above 8 wt per cent as V2O3 and a phosphorus (P) content below 0.1 wt per cent as P2O5. Hence, it is important to keep V in the slag phase while the P is moved to the metal phase during the steelmaking process.

In-situ recovery (ISR) is accepted and applied across many geographies, and approximately 50% of the world’s uranium is currently extracted by using an ISR method (World Nuclear Association, 2014). The low environmental impact, the elimination of risk for mine workers and the fact that all of the lowest-cost producers of uranium use an ISR approach should raise interest from traditional miners (IAEA, 2014). However, the broader application of ISR to other commodities and mineral systems remains limited. A number of demonstration (experimental) copper projects have been undertaken (Sinclair and Thompson, 2015) with a few copper projects in Arizona being close to demonstration (Florence, 2018 and Gunnison, 2018). Evidence of very few economically operating ISR copper projects can be found (for example, the Russian, Uralgidromed OAO, built by the Russian Copper Company in 2005 and operated as an ISR facility from the Gumeshevskoye deposit (Russia Mining, 2018). A number of gold deposits, particularly paleochannel deposits, have also been considered for ISR, but, to the best of our knowledge, only limited demonstration and no commercial operations have been established, yet (Kuhar et al, 2018 and references therein).CITATION:Robinson, D J and Kuhar, L L, 2018. Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) is owned and jointly managed by Ashanti Goldfields Company (Ghana) and Anglogold (South Africa). The mine is currently one of the largest gold producing open pit operations in Africa producing 620 000 ounces of gold and mining in excess of 70 000 000 tonnes of material per annum. The mine currently has 2000 full time employeeÆs and a mine life in excess of 12 years. Geita Gold Mine is comprised of 11 different gold deposits situated in the Lake Victoria Goldfields of North Western Tanzania (Figure 1). The gold deposits are primarily associated with banded ironstone formations within an Archaean greenstone belt. Current global resources, including Inferred, stand at 129.5 million tonnes grading 3.91 g/t (16.2 M oz). Open pit reserves total 70.4 million tonnes grading 4.16 g/t (9.4 M oz). The majority of the gold resource is hosted by the three deposits (Nyankanga, Lone Cone and Geita Hill) within the æGeita TrendÆ a large and continuous (>4 km long) mineralised zone (Adofo, 2002). Geita Gold Mine commenced operations in June 2000, as the second large-scale open pit gold mine in Tanzania. The new workforce of 800 people had no previous experience in open pit gold mining. Since the start of the operation, Geita Gold MineÆs management ambition was to become a world leader in the application of best practice in all technical disciplines and in operational success. Staff development and training was identified as one of the major components in the company achieving its aim. Geita Gold MineÆs management has committed the necessary training staff, resources and the commitment of over $US 1 M a year to staff training and development programs for 2003 and 2004. The process and management of Geita Gold MineÆs mining geology staff training and development program is presented in this paper.

A 3050m long section of a 1.65m internal diameter tunnel is presently under construction in the Brisbane area by means of the pipe-jacking method. The soils along the alignment had been deposited in a deltaic/estaurine environment and rapid changes in soil type occur. The tunnel passes beneath several extensive bodies of surface water. Groundwater problems have been experienced with tunnelling through alluvial sands and gravels. Details of the ground conditions, the pipe-jacking method used and tunnelling experience are discussed in this Paper.
