Prospecting ice on the Moon necessitates drilling systems to obtain subsurface samples and measure the composition of ice deposits. Landers and rovers equipped with drilling equipment are essential for analysing ice and subsurface resources located at the Moon’s poles. These devices must be small, lightweight, low-power, highly efficient, and high-performance units to function properly in the extreme conditions of the lunar environment. Researchers have developed a prototype drilling apparatus capable of operating in atmospheric and cold environments. A newly developed drilling system in Korea, capable of performing not only sampling but also subsurface investigation, is introduced.

Most metallic iron in the world is produced in blast furnaces from different feed stocks – sinter, lump ore and pellets. Sinter is the main iron-containing feed to the blast furnace and can constitute up to 70–85 per cent of the total ferrous burden. As sinter quality is a key element for stable blast furnace operation, the textural, chemical and physical characteristics of the sinter are very important. Two major factors that affect sinter strength are mineralogy and porosity. This study utilised optical image analysis (OIA) to characterise sinter mineralogy, and the results were compared to those obtained by manual point counting under the optical microscope.Two major mineral characteristics of iron ore sinter are the presence of primary (unreacted) and secondary (derived from melt) hematite. Standard OIA, which is based on RGB thresholding, is not able to distinguish them as they have the same reflectivity; however, primary and secondary hematite in iron ore sinter have a different morphology. The CSIRO-developed OIA software Mineral4/Recognition4 has a unique feature to identify various textures/morphologies of the same mineral. Together with other capabilities of the Mineral4/Recognition4 software, this feature was used to identify different types of hematite and silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium and other common sinter phases, such as magnetite, larnite, glass and remnant aluminosilicates.A visual comparison of the sinter mineralogy present in optical photomicrographs and that present in the mineral maps created automatically by the Mineral4 module of the CSIRO software confirmed the accuracy of the automated mineral identification.CITATION:Donskoi, E, Hapugoda, S, Lu, L, Poliakov, A, Peterson, M and Haileslassie, A, 2015. Callie underground gold mine is part of the Newmont Tanami Operations, and is now the primary provider of ore to the Granites processing Mill. The Callie underground mine has produced in excess of 7.6 million tonnes (Mtpa) of ore, since production began in 1998, with a current production rate of 1.9 Mtpa. Callie underground uses sublevel open stoping with extraction through a combination of primary and secondary stopes. The primary stope filling strategy utilises cement aggregate fill (CAF) to allow full recovery of secondary stopes. The Callie backfill operation has had a continuous testing program in place during this time, which has resulted in a great deal of information available for post fill analysis. All CAF placement into primary stopes for Callie has been via surface boreholes and this has given Callie mine an understanding of some of the issues related to borehole design, type of linings to use depending on angle, depth and quantity of fill into stopes. Finally backfill barricades at Callie have undergone a number of changes during the time to optimise the design based on whether CAF or sand fill is used. This paper discusses the CAF backfill practices and testing methods used for backfilling operations at Callie.

Mine planning is a crucial part of all mining industry projects, and nowadays, geometallurgical mapping through advanced computer technologies provides an opportunity to involve metallurgical responses of a deposit into 3D block model in order to optimise mine planning activities, especially for production forecasting. Including these metallurgical parameters apart from traditional geology and grade-based attributes into resource modelling leads to an extensive approximation for the economic maximisation of mine production due to better forecasting, planning and increasing certainty and the reliability of the resource model (Macfarlane and Williams, 2014). Commonly, geostatistical techniques and algorithms are used to produce models with the high resolution (Brissette et al. 2014; Deutsch et al. 2014; Tolosana-Delgado et al. 2015). The accuracy of the modelling procedure deeply depends on a reliable block model, produced by spatial analysis of corresponding variables that define the geological, metallurgical, mineralogical and chemical behaviour of the deposit. However, there are special cases, where the application of enhanced geostatistical methods is required, to solve the occurred difficulties between variables with multivariate complexities. For example, in oxide copper deposits, the soluble copper grade is a percentage of total copper grade and recoverable by heap leaching processes (Emery, 2012; Hosseini and Asghari, 2015). After the closure of mines they naturally start to fill up with water. As a result, hydraulic gradients develop between adjacent mines and different hydraulic water pressures are exerted onto peripheral areas or compartments within mines. This results in water flow between mines, or onto the surface. This flow is referred to as intermine flow. The geometry of the collieries in the central Witbank Coalfield make intermine flow possible in several areas. Since the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry declared intermine flow as one of its greatest concerns for granting closure to South African mines, much research into this phenomenon has been undertaken. The importance of the quantification lies in the DepartmentÆs goal of sustainable water management, and the possible long-term financial implications these flows could have for individual mines. The challenges of determining intermine flow are numerous, and attention is focused on the identification of areas where these flows can take place. Detailed mining plans on a regional scale are required, and detailed coal-seam floor data are combined to provide targets for possible interaction between these mines. The quantification of these flows is problematic due to the uncertainties regarding geometrical configurations and the variation in site-specific hydraulic characteristics of the coal and overlying lithilogical layers. To this end, use has been made of several analytic solutions and numerical flow modelling. Stage curves (volume versus elevation curves) for the opencast and underground workings have been calculated and first-order estimates for intermine flow or decant from these areas have been determined. The numerical modelling methodology entailed a down-scaling approach, starting with a broad regional model covering the entire area, followed by modelling the interactions between interconnected mines and finally looking in detail at the major areas of interaction. By considering different scenarios within the context of these flows, possible management options for intermine flow can be evaluated in terms of volumes and qualities that might emanate in the post-closure phases. Challenges for the future include obtaining site-specific information on the groundwater hydraulics and acceptable ranges for model parameters, and verifying model results over time.

Scaling in Bayer Refineries is a natural consequence of the super-saturated liquors used in the process. The caustic liquor is supersaturated not only with alumina but also silica and calcia at various stages of the process. The basic scaling mechanisms are reviewed and examples of the two basic types, growth and settled scales, are given. Examples include gibbsite scales formed in the precipitators and silica scales formed in heat exchangers. The main factors affecting the rate of growth of growth scales are temperature and supersaturation and are highlighted using a silica scale example. For growth scales chemical cleaning rates can readily be predicted from kinetics and an example for a gibbsite scale is given. For settled scales the growth rate cannot be predicted and the hydrodynamics within the system have most effect. There is no simple method to predict the potential for chemical cleaning of settled scales; some of the relevant issues are discussed, in particular methods to identify the cementing phase in the scale. The ever increasing demand for metals and minerals is putting significant pressure on current mining companies to find more ore. As these companies explore and mine, the future appears to be to go deeper and deeper underground. With depth, however, comes ever increasing costs as infrastructure such as hoisting, ventilation, the movement of workers and materials increase in size and scope. Further, the actual rock mass becomes prone to destruction through rock bursts and the heat generated becomes a major issue resulting in extreme expenditures in cooling plants and some of the biggest air movers in the world. All these issues result in dramatic changes in both capital and operating costs, subsequently making cut-off grades rise. As this trend continues there is an economic limit to how deep one can go, resulting therefore in a severe shortage of accessible ore deposits to mine. This paper discusses the need for larger marine robotics technology and presents the state-of-the-art in current research in underwater tele-autonomy, specifically the development of high bandwidth optical communication networks critical to any future activities (mining, construction, etc) underwater. The stratiform and vein-type pyritic silver-Iead-zinc-copper sulphide deposits of Sunny Corner, NSW are hosted by acid volcanic and clastic sedimentary rocks of Middle Silurian to Early Devonian age. The rocks have been subjected to low-grade regional metamorphism (prehnite-pumpellyite facies) and three phases of folding and four faulting events are recognised. Pyrite is intensely fractured, indicating brittle deformation. Chalcopyrite and galena exhibit deformation twins and slip planes indicating ductile deformation; sphalerite and chalcopyrite show straight and curved grain boundaries and dihedral angles of 120° as evidence of annealing recryslallisation. Sulphur isotope ratios for 22 samples from five deposits range from 1.7 to 10.7 per mil and average 7.4 per mil. Sulphur isotope data are similar to those from other stratiform sulphide deposits in acid volcanic rocks of Late Silurian age in the eastern Lachlan Fold Belt, especially Woodlawn and Captains Flat and together with other features of the mineralisation, suggest a volcanic exhalative origin for the Sunny Corner deposits.

The effect of using SO2 as an anodic depolariser in the electrowinning of copper from aqueous acid sulphate solutions has been studied using cells without/with a ceramic diaphragm. In all cases SO2-saturation of the electrolyte/anolyte decreased the anode potential by 68 to 75 per cent largely due to a change in the anode reaction from the oxidation of water to the oxidation of SO2 . However, poor quality deposits and low current efficiencies are encountered if SO2 is allowed free-access to the copper being deposited at the cathode. This situation is easily avoided by using a diaphragm to restrict SO2 to the anode compartment and for these conditions the resultant copper deposits are of a similar (high) quality to those obtained in the absence of SO2.

Alkali emissions are one of the environmental challenges facing alumina refineries. Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) is undertaking a number of initiatives to continuously improve its environmental performance. One of these is a program aimed at the reduction of alkali emissions. Alkali emissions originate from a number of sources (eg elevated open tanks), and its level depends on a number of process parameters/ mechanisms (ie splash filling, thermal currents in tanks, streams discharged from a pipe, tank temperatures, atomisation) and climatic conditions (eg wind speed and direction, rain, etc). Under normal operating conditions, there is a continuous low level of alkali emissions from the plant. Certain vessels within the plant have been identified as major contributors to this level of emission, while certain activities within the plant contribute to a temporary elevation (æspikeÆ) of alkali emissions. QAL developed a method using phenolphthalein-treated pads to measure emissions within and outside QAL boundaries. These provide no information about mass emission rates but are important for detecting if alkali material is present. Since mass emission rates are important for determining if improvements in emissions are made, QAL identified the need to design an improved sampling method. Following the development and implementation of a sampling and analysis method to monitor alkali emission concentrations, QAL is conducting a number of feasibility studies evaluating a range of alkali emission reduction options. The alkali measurement method will be used to track and demonstrate progress in this environmental initiative. This paper will discuss the measurement method and emission reduction options being evaluated.

El Teniente Mine started the exploitation of the primary rock in the beginning of the 1980s decade, using caving methods. Since the beginning the mining activities have induced seismicity including some occasional rockbursts. Owing to the relevant damages, the mining operations were stopped in some production sectors. This paper describes the concepts that have been used in order to control the induced seismicity based on the strategies for controlling the rockmass breaking process, which depend on mining parameters. It also presents the main concepts applied in the Teniente Sub6 sector design and the experience collected during its sector exploitation.

Universal Resources Ltd has acquired a large portfolio of high quality exploration projects in two of Australia's most prospective regions for base and precious metal exploration: the Mt Isa Inlier (the Mt Isa-Cloncurry area) of North West Queensland, and the southern Lachlan Fold Belt in New South Wales. Drilling techniques commonly employed by the company for mineral exploration include diamond core drilling, air core drilling, reverse circulation (RC) drilling, and rotary air blast (RAB) drilling. Using examples from these two regions, each drilling technique is briefly described and compared, with particular reference to the specific advantages and disadvantages of each method for: sampling size, sample representivity, recovery, integrity and potential contamination. The applicability and implications of the different drilling techniques described for subsequent mineralogical and metallurgical evaluation work are discussed.

The Northern Sewerage Project (NSP) is an upgrade to one of MelbourneÆs ageing, under-capacity trunk sewers. It will reduce the volume and frequency of wet-weather overflows to the Merri and Moonee Ponds Creeks and facilitate new housing developments in the northern suburbs of the city. A total of 12.4 km of tunnel and eight vertical access shafts will be excavated as part of the two project stages: Stage 1 (NSP1) will be owned and operated by Melbourne Water (MW) and Stage 2 (NSP2) will be owned and operated by Yarra Valley Water (YVW). The owners require the project to have a service life of 100 years, a requirement significantly beyond many of the current Australian Standards, which aim to achieve service lives greater than 60 years but are typically assumed to achieve 40 to 60 years. Because of the potentially corrosive natures of the external environment along the tunnels and the internal sewer environment, durability was a key concern for NSP1 and NSP2. Stringent specifications were applicable to the tunnel lining systems. This paper describes the corrosive environments impacting NSP1 and NSP2, explains the key design differences between the two stages and details the lining systems considered and selected to achieve the clientsÆ desired 100-year service life. The project design is complete and construction began in 2007.

The considerations which led to the decision to_ install discs at the Dampier Pellet Plant of Hamer ley Iron Pty. Ltd. are described. Initial testwork showed that the ore could be ground dry in open circuit to a Blaine index of 2500 cm2/g and that it pelletized readily. The various design criteria including diameter, slope, speed, motor size, depth of sidewall, feed point and water spray location were then determined. Plant performance after commissioning is described including the various problems encountered and the modifications since carried out to overcome them. The main problem was quickly identified as disc feed rate control. Various bin and bin feeder modifications were tried to overcome the effects of the fluidising characteristics of the dry ground ore. Other factors found to affect disc operation are ore size distribution, additives and operator competence.

The commercial production of copper metal involves a sequence of purification stages. One step of this process eliminates bulk quantities of iron and sulphur from matte Cu2S(FeS to produce blister containing 95.5 per cent copper. This task is traditionally performed in the Pierce-Smith converter, a cylindrical vessel in widespread use throughout the copper industry. Typically, multiple Pierce-Smith converters are arranged along an aisle, simplifying material transfer from vessel to vessel. Materials are moved through the aisle in pots and boats, using overhead cranes. In terms of the overall process, the converter aisle represents a critical processing unitùit contributes significantly to the value added nature of the metal. The aisle is subject to significant process disturbances. Thus, improvements in the operationÆs modes and conditions have a direct impact on process profitability. As with any commercial operation, improvements are always sought to increase process performance. The general approach involves process modelling, followed by an application of control and optimisation theory to this model. The results of such a study are then applied to the real process, leading to improved performance.

The main techniques for removing phosphorus as an impurity element in iron ores are physical separation (eg magnetic separation, flotation) and chemical separation (acid leaching, alkaline leaching and bioleaching) processes. When phosphorus occurs in iron ores as phosphate minerals (eg apatite), physical separation techniques are available to remove the gangue minerals from iron ores. On the other hand, chemical separation techniques are suitable for reducing phosphorus levels when phosphorus is associated with iron oxides and hydroxide minerals (eg hematite and goethite) in iron ores. In this study, the dephosphorisation behaviour of high‐phosphorus iron ore was investigated using a combined alkaline roasting and water washing route. Roasting experiments were conducted in a laboratory electric muffle furnace using various concentrations of sodium hydroxide (0–50 g/kg-ore) at different temperatures (100–800°C), varying prolonged roasting times (0–2 h), and different particle size fractions (-45 – -250 μm) of iron ore. Subsequent water washing experiments were employed at various pulp densities (30–1000 g/L) and different times (30 s – 60 min) at ambient temperature. Hematite and goethite were the main minerals in the high-phosphorus iron ore identified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The iron ore assaying 63.40 mass % Fe (total), 0.240 mass % P, 4.53 mass % SiO2, and 4.87 mass % Al2O3 were determined using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. The results showed that the dephosphorisation rate of the iron ore was reached 40 per cent under roasting with 50 g/kg-ore NaOH at 300°C for 2 hours followed by water washing for 30 s with a pulp density of 300 g/L, reducing phosphorus level from 0.240 mass % to 0.142 mass %. At the same time, the iron grade was reduced from 63.4 per cent to 59.5 per cent, caused by an iron loss. Results suggest that the phase transformation of goethite induces the dephosphorisation of high-phosphorus iron ore under alkaline roasting conditions

The history of the reduction of iron from its ores is lost in antiquity. Archreologists state that man has practised it for over four thousand years. Until comparatively recent times charcoal was the principal reducing agent for making metallic iron from its various oxidised ores. Coke was first used by iron founders in England in 1619, and its use spread gradually throughout the civilised world from then onwards. Indeed, the destruction of forests to obtain the requisite charcoal made the iron founders, both in England and America, extremely unpopular, and this hampered the iron industry to a considerable extent, until coal provided the metallurgist with a new and better fuel--coke which is used by most pyro-metallurgists today. The transition from wood to coal products for iron smelting had a profound effect on the location of iron works. Particularly was this the case in America where, in the infancy of the industry, practically each of the early States had its own iron producers, but as coal and coke replaced charcoal, there came about a concentration of the iron and steel industry around the coking coal deposits, and so today there are huge steel plants clustered around the soft coal basins in Pennsylvania and Illinois.The development of the iron and steel industry in Australia, which is comparatively recent by world standards, has been cradled in the coal basins of New South Wales. The first steel works of any consequence in this country were built near Lithgow, close by the mines which produced the coal for coking.Incidentally, these works were rather unique in that the three essential materials for iron and steel manufacture-ore, coal, and limestone-were found virtually at the works' back door.When, in 1912, the location of the proposed steel works for The Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. for smelting ore from Iron Knob in South Australia was considered, the site ultimately chosen was at Newcastle, almost on top of seams of satisfactory coking coal. One of the major factors which had determined the site of the steel works was the fact that, about 1912, three tons of coal were required to produce one ton of finished steel product, and the relative economics of ore and coal haulage were much in favour of bringing ore to the coal.

New Zealand contract mining has been well established for close to 50 years. The opencast industry has grown from mining quantities of less than 1 million bcm per year in the 1950s to around 20 million bcm in the late 1990s. Trends here are following those in other countries with mining companies looking to contract out more of the so called traditional mining work. The key driver behind this trend is not unique to the mining industry, but is simply a matter of concentrating on doing a few things well. In the case of the mining company this has come to mean owning and developing orebodies and where appropriate, marketing mining products, and leaving owning and operating of mining fleets to the contractor. This has the effect of reducing risk to the mining company as well as lowering costs. Both can be achieved without losing control of the key elements of the operation. Optimising performance is simply a matter of identifying the key drivers behind performance, having the right plant and the right people at the right place and providing these people with the information they need to manage the operation.

The ironmaking industry consumes a large amount of fossil fuel derived carbon as heat source, reducing agent of iron ores and carburising agent of reduced iron. Although the demand for drastic decrease of carbon dioxide emission, carbon is an essential element for smelting process of molten iron. The carbon recycling ironmaking process by circulating CO has been already proposed to achieve carbon neutrality. However, the production of molten hot metal is not considered in this process because sufficient amount of carbon does not dissolve in reduced iron by CO. Therefore, our group has suggested a new carbon recycling ironmaking process which can produce hot metal. In this process, free carbon and iron carbides produced by carbon deposition reaction using metallic iron as a catalyst are used. It is known that only Fe3C is obtained as iron carbide by using CO gas, however, Fe5C2 is also produced by adding H2 gas. The composite agglomerated with these carbonaceous materials and fine iron ore (Deposited Carbon-Iron oxide Composite: DCIC) is reduced and melted in a furnace. It is reported that Fe3C in DCIC accelerates the reduction reaction and melting of the composite. In this study, the effects of iron carbides and free carbon on the melting behaviour of DCIC are investigated. Fe3C, Fe5C2 and free carbon were produced by vapour deposition using porous iron whiskers and CO-CO2-H2 gas. These were agglomerated with hematite reagent at a certain ratio to prepare DCIC samples with and without Fe5C2. The samples were heated up to 1300°C in inert atmosphere. The DCIC containing Fe5C2 completely melted and iron nuggets were obtained after the experiment. This behaviour was not observed in the composite without Fe5C2. This indicates that using Fe5C2 is more preferable than Fe3C for molten iron production using DCIC.

In addressing a short-term operational need for the relocation of a tailings storage facility reclaim pond, a mine has achieved a host of water management objectives. Through effective planning and adoption of a strategic æwhole of mine lifeÆ approach, the mine has achieved significant environmental, social and economic benefits. A review of all water management aspects across the site identified a host of other interrelated water issues and concerns which, if dealt with individually, would prove too costly for individual operational departments. When considered as a whole, however, the issues became opportunities and provided the stimulus for integration of the site water management system. The development of site water and solute balance models provided the tool by which a number of water management options/strategies could be evaluated. The conceptual design and costing of the proposed water infrastructure further facilitated the evaluation of the multiple benefits to be gained from each option. A business case could then be made to mine management for the preferred option. The recommended water management strategy finally recommended to the mine not only provided a tailings storage facility (TSF) reclaim pond, but also provided for:increased wastewater recovery from the TSF, the capture of all waste rock dump run-off, additional water harvesting from local creeks, increased wastewater reuse, improved environmental water management, infrastructure that could be used by the local community after mine closure, and overall cost savings. This paper illustrates how effective water management planning can provide both short-term economic and environmental benefits, as well as long-term social benefits.
