Many hydrometallurgical processes produce large amounts of acid waste. This is illustrated by the copper S/X-E/W process which produces a bleed from the electrolysis tank house in the form of a concentrated sulphuric acid stream. Currently, the bleed stream is necessary to remove impurities such as iron that decreases the efficiency of the electrowinning process. However, this comes at a high financial cost owing to large quantities of make-up sulphuric acid required. A process has thus been developed with Zeneca Specialties (UK), ICI Australia and Gunpowder Copper Co at the University of Melbourne for the recovery of sulphuric acid from copper tank house bleed liquor. The recovery process uses the method of solvent extraction. Solvent extraction has the advantage of being a well-established technology in the mining industry and will reduce the environmental impact of the S/X-E/W process, as all additional chemicals can be completely recycled. In the past various systems have been used to plan the extraction of ore from block cave operations. These systems have varied from rather sophisticated models with empirical ægravity flowÆ rules applied to the very rudimentary models where only the recorded mined tonnageÆs have been accounted for against the available resource. The normal requirement of these models has been to only plan the movement of ground through the drawpoints. Little cognisance has been taken of the other parameters that affect the total mining operations. The intended purpose of the linear program planning system is to not only include the management, resource availability and geotechnical constraints, but to also include the mining rules. The paper will discuss the various constraints that have been considered, and attempt to illustrate where the system better serves the production system than previous ones. A brief technical discussion on the linear programming system is included.

The largest surface coal mine in North America requires complex materials handling infrastructure to fulfil the highly variable quality specifications of its contracts. These diverse demands, reflected in the arrival of numerous customer trains every day, necessitate the integration of information in every stage of production. To meet this goal, quality measurement, train line-up and mine planning processes are being integrated into local and remote control rooms. The effectiveness of such a system can only be measured by comparing decisions that are made with, and without, each of the individual integrated control systems. Traditionally, mine controllers use their experience, intuition or a variety of trial-and-error spreadsheets to determine the ideal materials handling flows needed to achieve the correct quality. These balanced decisions are complex since many factors must be considered such as the mine plan, fleet costs, quality variability and others; consequently mine controllers usually have widely varying success between crews.An evaluation model was developed to assess the impact of a decision support system (DSS) integrated in a control room for controlling the coal blending process. To this end, an ARENA-based simulator representing the whole production process can be used to pull performance and current materials handling settings directly either from the real-time systems in the mine, or from historical data. In this way, the same shift (breakdowns, cycle rates, etc) can be simulated and performance compared. Different settings of the DSS, in terms of what information is displayed and the methods for doing so, can be tested for effectiveness. The historical data are extracted directly from a corporate data warehouse, without altering the everyday working databases. At the same time, the simulator writes its results back into the same data warehouse structure, allowing the same KPI reports to be used to measure simulated shifts.

Current research at the CSIRO, Division of Applied Geomechanics, into the mode of response of fill as a structural component has been based on model tests for prediction of behaviour and field observation of critical parameters. The procedure is summarised in four stages: (a) define the specific fill function (b) postulate the mode of failure (c) use models to quantify the conditions (d) monitor critical parameters to check or update the analysis in (c). The above procedure is used to postulate the failure modes of each of the possible func- tions performed by fill materials. Analytical techniques, or lines of investigation, are described for each of these modes and specific reference is made, where, possible, to an exis- ting mine environment.

THE problem of satisfactorily eliminating the fumes and dust which are unavoidably produced in various metallurgical and manufacturing industries is one which has received considerable attention in the past, and has been the subject of much investigation and research. The solution of this problem was urgently desired for two reasons, the principal one being the fact that a considerable percentage of the total process losses in many industries was represented by the commercial values of the fumes and dust that escaped from the stack.The other reason is that, in some instances, the emission of the matter is regarded as objectionable. Various methods have been designed with a view to solving the problem thus presented, and the latest development that has beendesigned is the process of electrostatic precipitation. Continued investigational and developmental work with this process has already demonstrated its applicability to many industries, and new uses to which the process can be put are being opened up. Its use is already widespread, and the economic success that has attended its application in most instances would indicate that its use will become more general in the future.It has proved its ability to treat gases over wide ranges of temperature, and has successfully handled various types of fumes whose chemical characteristics differ very considerably. In many processes it has now come to be regarded as standard equipment.HISTORY OF ELECTRICAL PRECIPITATIONThe first recorded observations on the influence of an electrified insulated wire on gases containing solid particles in suspension was made as early as 1824 by Hohlfeld, in Leipzig. He found that, if he electrified a wire hung in a bottle filled with smoke, the smoke cleared rapidly, and a deposit formed on the sides and bottom of the bottle.

In recent years rehabilitation of mine sites has become a principal focus of mining legislation in Victoria. In previous eras, managed rehabilitation commenced, if at all, towards the end of mining operations. Planning for rehabilitation works now commences before an exploration licence is granted.The paper gives a brief overview of the requirements for rehabilitation under the Mineral Resources Development Act 1990, Extractive Industries Act 1966, and related environmental planning legislation including rehabilitation bonds and enforcement provisions.A brief review of the current taxation provisions is also included.

The mining. operations of Bougainville Copper Pty Limited are located at Panguna on the Island of Bougainville which is part of the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. Mineralisation in the Panguna area was first established by C.R.A. Exploration Pty Ltd in 1964. Exploration work since then has established ore reserves estimated to be 760,000,000 tons of.0.47% copper and 0.4 dwt./ton gold. An economic feasibility study completed in July of this year has enabled a decision to be made to proceed with a major mining operation. The ore will be mined by open cut methods and will be treated in a conventional concentrator with a nominal capacity of 90,000 short tons per day. The concentrate will be pumped as a slurry through a 15 mile long pipeline to a port established on the east coast where it will be filtered and dried ready for export. Other supporting facilities for the mine include two towns, a 135 megawatt steam power station, and access roads.

"Morro do Ouro Mine is a high tonnage/low-grade mine located in Paracatu, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The mines move around 55 Mt of ore per year at an average grade of 0.4 g/t. The auriferous mineralisation of Morro do Ouro is related to hydrothermal fluids rich in arsenic (As), gold (Au), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn). These percolated along favourable structures contained within phyllites of Upper Proterozoic age and defined a mineralised megaboudin which outcropped with 4 km extension and up to 2 km in width. The litologies in the interior of this structure are typically more deformed, sericitised and sulfidised, and exhibit the development of quartz boudins in the centre of the more deformed zones where are found the higher Au grades and the coarser sulfide crystals. Gold is preferentially associated with arsenopyrite, mainly occurring in fractures or aggregations of crystals and is rarely in solid solution or refractory. Over 90 per cent of the gold contained in the sulfide ore is free or extractable by cyanidisation. The current mineral reserve is 17.9 Mt at 0.403 g/t published at the end of 2012.In order to get a good grade estimation that represents the orebody more accurately a solids methodology was used to distinguish the different orebodies. Before 2011 the orebodies were worked with two domains relating to the weathered mantle. The B1 ore, which is oxidised, is located at the top of mineralisation, and is used to feed Plant 1. Underneath B2 ore, which is fresh sulfide bearing, represents over 30 years of production in Plant 2.In order to improve the predictability of gold grade estimation in geological modelling and to get a better predicting behaviour of each domain on the deposit, studies were carried out in which it was possible to show a correlation between elements and the mineralisation. One strong correlation and spatial distribution between Au and As, As and sulfur (S), Au and Pb, Au and Zn were found.Based on geochemistry, mineral correlations, amount of sulfide, structural deformation, texture of sulfides and the daily experience of the mine, it was possible to create solids that individualised bodies with similar mineralogical and chemical characteristics using the parameters listed above.After 2011, a new modelling concept was proposed and built with 11 different domains, compared with the previous, and with two more parameters: recovery acid neutralised capacity (ANC).Each of these bodies have different behaviours in mineral processing, like flotation and metallurgy. For example, bodies with pyrrhotite bring problems in the flotation, bodies with high arsenic do not recover well, bodies with high As with coarse texture have good recovery, bodies with fine texture do not have good adherence in production.In the present state of knowledge, protocols are being developed for bench testing to predict the recovery of each geochemical domain aiming to include these in the geological model for the parameter recovery. The model considers a range of design parameters and operating condit- ions and evaluates the significance of these in the ultimate design of a mine. It also considers organizational features associated with the mining method and examines the inter-dependence between operations. An important characteristic of the model is the use of both stochastic and deterministic methods to study the behaviour of the complete mining system. The simulator selects the appropriate unit operation, computes and records its time, performs it and then calculates the production and cost data. Output is in the form of shift, day, week or period repor-ts. These reports will indicate problem areas such as restrictions in the production network for a given set of conditions. Tasker (1985) has detailed the accepted practices for constructing polygonal blocks of influerrce in the estimation of ore reserves. Further he suggests that users might fall into traps such as omission or overlap when determining the area of influence for each sample point.As an example of these types of errors Tasker (1985) describes under "Coverage ofthe Area" how 25 per cent of the exploration area will not be included in an equiangular triangular grid where hexagonal blocks of influence are used.The introductory suggestion of Tasker (1985) of "incorrect procedure" by Rudenno (1983) (and Armstrong (1983)) reiterated around the Figure 2a of Tasker (1985), is based on the brief description of the polygonal area of influence by Rudenno (1983). That description is not too different from that given by King, McMahon and Bujtor (1982).

Gas problems, largely instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas, arose in the early days of coal mining in Australia, leading to attempts at predrainage often including destressing. With deeper mining and new gassy areas being mined, gas problems have increased. This has led to more research, such as into coal-gas relationships, and more practical trials into seam gas drainage in both the Sydney and Bowen basins. Predrainage techniques have been devised to suit the special Australian geological conditions and to take into account the erratic occurrence of CO, (nearly 100 per cent in some cases) in the seam gas. Better mining methods and other improvements are continuing. The introduction of post-drainage has been simplified by the adaptation of long established overseas techniques and equipment.Utilisation of seam gases in Australia is complicated by the presence of CO, but even with pure CH. little has been done.Seam gas drainage has some disadvantages such as the need for, and the dangers of, complex and rigorously controlled plant. Also drained coal becomes harder and dustier.

An experimental study of the packing of a coal heap has been carried out. The bulk density of a coal heap is considered as a function of a number of variables, viz flow rate, conveyor belt speed, the height of the disengagement point of the conveyor belt, coal particle density, moisture content, the size of the heap and coal particle size distribution. The effects of the dimensionless numbers resulting from dimensional analysis on the packing density of a coal heap have been experimentally examined and analysed. Based on the experimental results, equations have been formulated for the estimation of the bulk density of a coal stockpile. The validity of these equations are checked by comparing the predictions with measurements of real industrial Stockpiles.

Following the Busang fiasco, more detailed guidelines were appended to the latest revision of the JORC Code released in September 1999 (JORC, 1999). Although the definitions and terminology essentially remained unchanged, the additional information in the guidelines has highlighted a number of issues for consideration by geologists undertaking computer-based resource estimations. The three main issues are:Data Integrity û details such as drilling and logging techniques, sampling procedures, assay tests, site visits, data recording and aggregation methods need to be considered. Geological Interpretation û is the Competent Person applying the appropriate software interpretation to the deposit in accordance with the regional setting. Are the correct computer-based tools being applied and are they producing the desired result (without compromise) to the satisfaction of the Competent Person? Modelling Technique û the importance of the relevant experience of the Competent Person not only in regard to the geology, but also with respect to the modelling algorithms and resource calculation methods of the computer software system involved. At the end of the day, it is essential that the Competent Person undertake a reality check on the resource estimation itself. They should also check that the borehole spacing is in accordance with the level of continuity for each critical parameter (such as structure, grade, impurities, etc) for which the resources are categorised.

The Buttle Lake camp is in central Vancouver Island, southwestern British Columbia, Canada. The camp hosts world-class polymetallic volcanogenic deposits of Devonian, Frasnian age (370Ma). This paper describes an on-going sulphur and lead isotope study of the major orebodies.Sulphur isotopes were determined for sulphides (pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite and galena) and sulphate (barite). Sulphide analyses are markedly different from sulfate. The differences are explained below in a unique model.Sulphide isotopic compositions cluster tightly (del34S -6.7 to 4.6), and demonstrate isotope reversals. Calculated temperatures of correctly ordered mineral pairs are unrealistically high. We conclude that the sulphides are in isotopic disequilibrium, presumably because of rapid precipitation from a quenched plume in an anoxic environment, and because of subsequent sulphide replacement.

Gold-silver mineralization at Cracow and Ukalunda in Queensland comprise quartz-filled veins, fissures and breccia zones hosted by propylitically altered volcanics and epizonal intrusions which are strongly fractured. The terrestrial volcanic facies, structural setting, type of alteration and complex mineralogy suggest these deposits are of the epithermal type.The 180 depleted character of the wall-rocks is consistent with the involvement of meteoric waters in convective hydrothermal cells associated with the vulcanism. The Cracow quartzes have remarkably low 6180 values from -2.0 to -3.4 per mil typical. of meteoric hydrothermal systems at high latitude, consistent with the inferred position of Australia during the Permian. 6180 values for the Ukalunda quartzes exhibit a wide range from 5.1 to 14.9 per mil which reflect the mixing of magmatic and meteoric waters, and a steep geothermal gradient.Further stable isotope and geochemical studies are in progress to establish the scale and morphology of the zones of anomalous 6180 and mineralogy in the wallrocks which constitute significant exploration targets.

Appropriate management of the ground subsidence induced by coal mining activities is essential. To assess the effectiveness of grout injection for mining subsidence control, time-lapse ground penetrating radar (GPR) imaging data were collected before and after grouting. The pregouting subsurface responses were interpreted to have changed after grout injection. The changes were caused by injecting the grout materials (flyash and water) into the delaminated strata and permeable fracture zones. The largest distance of the observed GPR event changes at the right end of the main profile is 132 m away from the injection borehole. Although the GPR images could not easily tell if the image changes were caused by the injected ashes or the water, it does suggest that the injection materials had been pushed at least 130 m away from the injection borehole. This is consistent with the borehole scan monitoring, which confirmed that the grout has travelled more than 90 m from the injection borehole.

The Ramu chromite deposit occurs in the Marum Ophiolite complex and is the most economically attractive chrom-ite deposit in Papua New Guinea. Its lateritic nickel, chromite and cobalt potential has attracted several compan-ies to prospect the deposit.In the present work, the compositions of chromite in the Ramu lateritic deposit and coexisting olivine-chromite pairs in Marum Ophiolite dunite were analysed with the electron microprobe for Fe, Mg, Cr and Al. The results were used to determine the relationship between the cations in the tetrahedral and octahedral structures of the chromite. In addition, the Fe, Mg, Cr and Al cations of the coexisting olivine-chromite pairs were used to calculate the equilibrated temperatures of crystallisation of the chromite. The variation of Fe", Mg and Cr cation values of the chromite in relation to the calculated temperatures was studied by regression analysis.
