The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) skarn Cu-Au deposit is the deepest explored part of the Ertsberg East Skarn System extending from the surface at 4200 m elevation to the DMLZ at 2900 to 2600 m. The DMLZ is hosted in an upper Cretaceous to lower Tertiary siliciclastic and carbonate succession adjacent to the 3 Ma Ertsberg pluton. Much of the DMLZ ore is hosted by mixed assemblages of siliciclastic and dolomitised carbonate strata that have been altered to Mg-rich skarn assemblages. Unaltered equivalent strata from a 300 m cored interval in the Yellow Valley Syncline were characterised petrographically and representative samples were analysed for major element compositions. These stratigraphic and chemical units are interpreted to be responsible for the varying skarn lithologies within the DMLZ. The dominant prograde skarn assemblages are controlled by protolith composition, notably the relative abundance of quartz, dolomite, and calcite within the protolith. Models based on isochemical metamorphism of mixed assemblages of quartz and dolomite suggest that the formation of the forsterite-diopside dominant skarn assemblages resulted in the greatest amount of pore space increase. DMLZ Cu-Au concentrations were locally controlled by host lithology, with structural features providing fluid pathways that focused the mineralising fluids. This paper describes a new mine backfill method based on a newly invented binder with several years of test results from laboratory and onsite applications. The new binder has several advantages over traditional Portland and slag cement binders. One tonne of the new binder can replace two to three tonne of Portland cement when used to consolidate backfill and can result in the same compressive strength within seven days. When comparing backfill slurries of the same pulp density, the new binder attains more volume of in-place backfill mass than Portland cement because of the high crystallisation of water, resulting in tightly filled stopes. The crystallisation of the water provides for less or no dewatering in the backfill stope and easier transportation of the backfill slurry. Pastefill performance can be achieved by using pulp densities typical of a hydraulic backfill and the new binder, all the while transporting with the same ease of hydraulic fill.

There is a considerable difference in the particle size distribution (PSD) of clay mineral-rich coarse coal reject with variations in the test moisture state and the chemistry of the water used for testing. The coarse coal reject tested were collected from Jeebropilly Mine, located in the Ipswich Coalfields of south-eastern Queensland. Differences between the results of dry and wet sieving analysis indicate a significant breakdown of the clay mineral-rich coarse coal reject on wetting-up. Wet sieving caused a breakdown of the gravel-sized fraction to silt and clay size without significant breakdown to sand size. There is also a considerable variation in the results of hydrometer analyses of the clay mineral-rich coarse coal reject with variations in the chemistry of the water used, particularly at the fine end of the particle size range. The waters used included tap water, coal processing water and deionised water. In addition, the method of dispersion applied prior to hydrometer analysis can have a significant effect on the PSD of clay mineral-rich coarse coal reject, with boiling and sonic vibration causing the most breakdown of the clay particles. Tin mining has taken place in the New England region of New South Wales since 1872. Until fairly recent times there was little pro- vision made for environmental protection. Mining methods,which included ground sluicing and open cutting,had considerable environmental impact. Much of the topsoil was lost and there is little vegetation on the infertile and at times toxic, subsoil. Thus much of the lands disturbed by mining have not been stabilised and are eroding, causing extensive pollution of adjacent watercourses. There are more than 1500ha of abandoned tin mine sites in the New England, representing one of the worst rehabilitation problems in New South Wales and reflecting poorly on the mining industry as a whole. Recent tin mining operations incorporate progressive rehabilitation in their mining cycle. Topsoil is stockpiled and later respread. This topsoil contains a seed source, facilitating revegetation and thus stabilisation. The tin mining industry, under considerable cost pressures at present, is seeking a cost- effective revegetation technique. Most of the mines in the New England are situated in a forest environment. Trials have been conducted in the past using exotic pasture species with limited success due to the characteristics of the subsoil. Other revege- tation trials have used pine or eucalypt tree species. The cost of these techniques is a major disadvantage. Certain acacias species were observed colonising disturbed tin mining areas on very infertile subsoils. Acacias have a number of characteristics indicating a possible applic- ations in mine rehabilitation programmes.

Currently, conventional methods of decline development put enormous cost pressure on the profitability of mining operations. This is the case with narrow vein orebodies where current methods and mine design of decline development may be too expensive to support economic extraction of the ore. The time it takes to drill, clean and blast an end in conventional decline development can be up to 473 minutes. This is because, once an end is blasted, cleaning should first be completed before drilling can commence, resulting in low advance rates per shift. Improvements in advance rates during decline development can be achieved by application of the electric monorail transport system (EMTS) based drilling system. The system is composed of a two-boom drill mounted on the monorail and a pneumatic face cleaning system that loads blasted material into monorail containers. The operation allows for drilling of the top part of the face to commence as the monorail loading system continues to clean the blasted material at the development face. The preliminary indication is that an advance rate of 12 m per day could be achieved compared to 6 m per day in conventional decline development. The increase in the advance rate results from increased number of blasts that are possible per shift due to reduced time of cleaning and drilling the development face. The continuous drilling system has the advantage of accelerated decline development and orebodies will be accessed quickly and cheaply. Other advantages of the system include negotiating steep and changing gradients (ie reducing decline length), ability to negotiate tight horizontal curves, small operating room and limited diesel fumes.

A Joint Venture between Union Oil Development Corporation and Geoscan Proprietary Limited carried out an Airborne Multispectral Scanner Survey over approximately 15,000 square kilometres in the Charters towers area of northeastern Queensland during late 1985 and in September, 1986. The survey, using the Geoscan Mark I scanner, consisted of 50 runs each having a swath width of 5 kilometres. Twelve or thirteen spectral bands were recorded, 5 in the VNIR, 4 in the SWIR and 3 or 4 in the TIR. The results of the survey were interpreted by interactive image processing with the aim of identifying those minerals or their weathering products which are characteristically associated with hydrothermally emplaced gold mineralisation in this part of Queensland. Spectral bands in the VNIR were used to identify and discriminate the iron hydroxides, whilst the SWIR bands were used to outline the clay and carbonate rich areas. The TIR aided in identifying areas of silicification.

The Black Star Open Cut is located immediately adjacent to the township of Mt Isa and is situated in the middle of extensive pre-existing infrastructure including two concentrators, two smelters, a wet fill plant and two shafts. At any one time there are in excess of 500 people working on the surface within an industry-accepted 600 m exclusion zone from Black Star blasts. Apart from the surface operations there are also the underground operations including the lead mine (closed in December 2005) and the Enterprise and X-41 mines that must clear for all Black Star blasts. The application of industry standard blasting exclusion zones (600 m) was risk assessed as imposing operationally prohibitive constraints which could cause significant business interruption due to the logistical challenges required to ensure that all personnel from surface plants were evacuated for each blast and potential for lost production whilst these personnel were not operating the plant. In was therefore an imperative for the blast exclusion zone to be reduced. This was achieved by the: use of a QA/QC team to ensure that relevant drill and blast implementation is within an acceptable tolerance (KPIs) from design; use of high-quality stemming material called HMR, which is a by- product of the concentrating process and is generally sized at -14 mm with very little fines; implementation of appropriate training and support to Black StarÆs own blast crews, reinforcing the need to achieve the designed amount of stemming in every hole; and provision of appropriate support from Black StarÆs management for additional resources to ensure that every blast achieves design within the KPIs but especially in high-risk areas. The blast exclusion zone was successfully reduced after monitoring the flyrock results from more than 176 blasts. Black Star Open Cut now maintains a minimum blast exclusion of 200 m in critical areas; however, general blasting currently uses a 250 m exclusion as this provides additional risk management whilst still minimising the logistics associated with clearing and securing the slightly increased area.

Access to secure and reliable water resources is fundamental to the minerals industry. In recognition of that requirement, and cognisant of extensive contemporary public water debate and reform initiatives in Australia, the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) approached the Ministerial Council on Mineral and Petroleum Resources (MCMPR) proposing the establishment of a Joint Working Group to prepare a framework of strategic principles to ensure responsible water management at a site and corporate level, manage risks and identify opportunities. The Framework provides high-level guidance on issues that should be addressed in water decision making across Australia in relation to mining and associated processing operations. It identifies principles and objectives for adoption in four areas, viz: valuing water, strategic water planning, implementation, and engaging stakeholders. Given the high level nature of the Framework, and its national application, it does not seek to replicate detailed guidelines already widely available in each state and territory on operational water management practices and associated regulatory issues at mine sites. The Framework includes a series of case studies from across Australia that demonstrate where strategic thinking, wise water management and close consultation with stakeholders has delivered better water use, more profitable operations and excellent community/stakeholder relationships. The Framework was formally launched on behalf of MCMPR by the Western Australian Minister for Resources at the MCAÆs Sustainable Development Conference in Perth in October 2006. Evaluating the resources and reserves in a mineral deposit requires many interdependent subjective decisions. The decision of stationarity is arguably the most important. This decision includes: the choice of domains that subset the entire deposit, modelling the boundaries of each domain, and understanding and considering the nature of the contacts between domains. Reasonable choices are made in consideration of the geological context, the available data, the goals of the study and the available resources for the study. This paper reviews aspects of the decision of stationarity in modern resource assessment with a focus on quantifying uncertainty and using numerical/statistical tools to help the geomodeller. The use of volume/distance functions to quantify uncertainty in domain limits is particularly important and is presented in detail. The use of contact plots provides help with the continuity of grades across domain boundaries. Realisations are not assembled as a branching combinatorial of all possibilities, but as a set of realisations that provide a measure of uncertainty. This paper amounts to a definition of stationarity for modern resource assessment.

This paper discusses considerations to be made for the selection of rock tunnelling machines, as opposed to drilling and blasting. A systematic approach is presented in terms of utilizing data frcm site investigations to accurately forecast machine performance for estimating and planning purposes and to help minimise associated risks. Useful rock index properties are identified, and correlations for predicting advance rates for roadheader and full face machines are presented together with a simple method of characteristing rock mass conditions for estimating machine utilization and the savings to be gained in support costs. Finally considerations for tunnelling in adverse ground, for advance probing and for large sized tunnels are outlined.

The inferred ground conditions for the proposed mined cross passages at the northern end of the Waterview Connection tunnels consist of an overburden of alluvial and residual soils, with mixed face geology of highly weathered to unweathered extremely weak rock. This paper describes three-dimensional (3D) finite difference analyses undertaken to evaluate the stability of the cross passage headings and to validate the proposed sequence of excavation. The analyses undertaken incorporated the influence of the construction of the mainline tunnels and the breakout opening in the segmental lining for construction of cross passages.The stability analyses were carried out using FLAC3D™, version 4.0 (by Itasca Consulting Group) by progressive reduction of shear strength parameters to obtain a failure condition and estimate a factor of safety. For each step of strength reduction, corresponding increments of displacements of several points on heading faces were monitored. The stability obtained from numerical analyses was compared with analytical solutions. Interpretation of results of drained analyses indicated instability of the upper 2 m of heading face within the highly weathered rock mass. Additional analyses were undertaken by including grouted fibreglass dowels to reinforce the heading face. The results of the additional analyses showed significant reduction in displacements and yielding of ground around the face. The proposed temporary support comprised face reinforcement using grouted fibreglass dowels in conjunction with canopy tubes and perimeter support of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete. The stability of the construction sequence, which was related to the specific requirement of the proposed excavation equipment, was validated.CITATION:Wansbone, M G and Bhargava, R, 2014. For the past 150 years, drilling and blasting has been an integral part of the underground mining industry in Australia. Ever since Busby's Bore was developed using black powder to supply Sydney with water, miners have been drilling holes, filling them with explosives and blasting the rock into a manageable size. The drilling was fairly straight forward but the explosives were always a mysterious commodity. It worked, but how and why? The explosives industry is now working much closer to the mining industry to dispel these mysteries and also to aid the advancement of explosive technology. This paper looks at the results of these advances in the form of explosives, accessories and blasting systems.

On January 21, 1986, a methane ignition and subsequent mine fire occurred in the under- ground workings of the Jim Walter Resources, Incorporated No. 3 Mine located near Adger, Alabama. The fire, which began on a longwall face and eventually spread into the adjacent gob area, could not be extinguished directly and raged out of control for several hours. Sealing operations were begun underground by Mine Rescue Teams and the fire area was successfully sealed with the mine able to resume production in about one month. The No. 3 Mine liberated over sixteen million cubic feet of methane in twenty-four hours. The operation was unique, in that, the successful underground sealing of a fire in an ultra-gassy mine had not been attempted or com- pleted for several years. Maps and charts are included to give explanation of the typical data used to manage the recovery effort.

Politicians and economists talk glibly about the so-called knowledge revolution. The reality is that knowledge is fundamental to economic progress. Consequently there have been many technological revolutions. The global impacts of the invention of the steam engine and the development of the frozen meat industry are well known. Another less publicised technological advance occurred in Central Otago late in the nineteenth century. This was the adaptation of the bucketladder dredge to the mining of placer deposits. A product of over 30 years experimentation and innovation, New Zealand dredging technology was taken to the Risdon Iron and Locomotive Works, San Francisco by R H Postlethwaite, a Dunedin based mining engineer. New Zealand-style dredges built by Risdon operated successfully in California, Alaska and the Yukon. Californian engineers assimilated the best features of the New Zealand dredges with American (Bucyrus) designs to produce a standard for the worldwide placer mining industry.

"The hazards associated with dust explosions are well known, and coal dust explosions present a significant hazard in the underground coal mining industry worldwide. In earlier work, we presented computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and test results for coal dust explosions within a 2.5 m diameter circular gallery, along with CFD simulations and test results for the suppression of these explosions with finely atomised water sprays. In this paper, we present refinements to the CFD modelling that yield a significantly improved calibration with the test results, and proceed to investigate by CFD the requirements for suppression of a coal dust explosion in a typical underground roadway. The sulfurisation-flotation process was unsuccessful when initially applied to the oxidised Pb-Zn ore in Lanping County of Yunnan Province China. A comprehensive mineralogical study indicates that the problem is caused by the soluble salt gypsum in the Lanping oxidised ore, which produces a large amount of Ca2+ cations. The Ca2+ cations react with S2- anions (from sodium sulfide) in preference to Zn2+ and Pb2+ forming calcium sulfide, and make it difficult to form zinc and lead sulfides on the surfaces of the respective oxidised Zn and Pb minerals. In addition, the calcium sulfide formation consumes a large quantity of the available sodium sulfide, further inhibiting the sulfurisation process. The efficiency of the sulfurisation of oxidised Zn and Pb minerals has been improved greatly by the pretreatment removal of gypsum, with the added benefit of the required dosage of sodium sulfide being substantially reduced.

Average annual growth in consumption of primary energy in Australia over the past ten years has been 5.5% compared to a world average of 4.1%. Over the next ten years growth rate is expected to increase to 6% per annum due largely to the rapid development in the mineral processing industry. By the end of the 1970's natural gas is expected to supply more than 9% of Australia's, primary energy market. Coal will supply 40% and petroleum products 47%. Nuclear energy will make its appearance but-will only make a small contribution in the period. Australia has adequate reserves of natural gas and coal to supply its needs in the 1970's and beyond. However the newly developed reserves of crude, while supplying 60-70% of requirements-in the initial years; will need regular and sizable additions if they are to .keep pace with the expanding consumption. For Australia to become self sufficient in the period 1970-1990 it is estimated *that new discoveries-will need to approximate. ten times the volume of recoverable reserves found in Australia to date. .

Selective mining played a major role in saving a mine and a communityÆs existence as well as creating a working culture that is the model for all KumbaÆs mines. The successes that resulted from selective mining led to receiving KumbaÆs highest award (it was the Gold Medal Breakthrough project of 2003) as well as the productivity award at the National Productivity Institute award ceremony in 2004. Kumba was established in November 2001 (previously Iscor Mining). The new company identified Mineral Resource Management (MRM) as one of its key drivers and an initiative was launched to define MRM in the Kumba way. Best MRM practices at the Kumba mines were included in the definition. Selective mining was born out of this initiative. One of the key principles of good MRM practice was identified as: æThere must be a balance in the operational processÆ. This principle was applied with great success at Thabazimbi Iron Ore mine in the Limpopo province, South Africa. The emphasis of this paper will be to show how value can be unlocked throughout the whole mining value chain. In the past (up to 2001) the mine went through a number of crisis situations: planned production performances were not reached, the stripping ratio was extremely high with two new pits, the product beds were not of constant quality, slope failures were big risks, flooding could and did cut off half of the ore supply, and restructuring demoralised staff.This paper focuses on: selective mining throughput drivers, and selective mining and its role in achieving this balance.The results were dramatic, with huge improvements in production results, stockpiles, plant yields and product bed specifications. The mine was brought into balance and a self feeding loop was created with positive spin-offs up to this day.

The extensive literature on sulfide flotation indicates that pyrite poorly floats under alkaline condition. Xanthate concentration has a positive effect on pyrite flotation, but above a pH of 11, pyrite seems to be strongly depressed, independently of the concentration in xanthate. In this investigation, aeration and xanthate concentration effects were studied for pyrite flotation conditioned at pH 11 with lime. Results presented in this paper include surface infrared analyses and pulp chemistry measurements which have showed that aeration had a dual effect on pyrite flotation. It induced pyrite surface activation by oxygen, and oxidation of ferrous iron to ferric hydroxides or oxyhydroxides species. It also favoured dissolution of CO2, leading to calcium carbonate precipitation and adsorption onto pyrite surface. Both CO2 dissolution and ferrous oxidation generated protons and decreased pulp pH. Pyrite flotation was observed to be effective with a statistical monolayer of xanthate that could be adsorbed as mixture of dixanthogen and metal-xanthate complex. Non-floated fractions showed high amounts of carbonate, and presence of hydroxyl iron sulfate (Fen(OH)m(SO4)p, xH2O) which have inhibited the hydrophobicity effect of adsorbed xanthate. Environmental desulfurisation could be improved by aeration control causing pyrite oxidation and pH decrease to reach optimal flotation condition with a relatively low xanthate concentration.
