The distribution of p(~rphyt1 copper deposits, in time as well as place, is used to propose an occurrence model based on the genesis models of Sillitoe and Rona. A magmatic source of the metals is accepted. The characteristic metallogenic epoch and the migration of the mineralization event along an elongate metal province are explained as the result of subduction of an obliquely- oriented strip of mineral-enriched material on the oceanic plate. Two mineral-enriched trails emanate from a hot-spot source of high-intensity hydrothermal activity in an oceanic rift. Because the whole plate system moves relative to hot spots, the hydrothermal source appears to migrate along the rift, and the two trails are not parallel to transform faults, but form a broad "V" centred on the hotspot. Source loci are spaced at intervals of about 3000 km, resulting in the possible repetition of metallogenic epochs, in a subduction zone province, at about 100 m.y. intervals. The position of the mineral-enriched strip can be found graphically, given ages of a series of deposits in a province, and the plate convergence vectors. This knowledge provides an exploration tool at regional scale and, by reflection across the rift, the potential for exploration is extended across oceans. The model has implications for commodities and deposit types other than porphyry coppers.

Coal mining operations can impact on various types of surface infrastructure or natural features, including cliff-lines, steep slopes and natural watercourses. Longwall mining leads to a subsidence depression due to the changing geometry of the mined out area. The current regulatory process for managing subsidence in New South Wales (NSW) involves the preparation of a Subsidence Management Plan (SMP). This paper demonstrates the use of a Weights of Evidence (WofE) technique applied within a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) environment to predict potential areas for rockfalls along cliff-lines in the NSW Southern Coalfield. The WofE is a ædata-drivenÆ method that can be used to predict subsidence impacts prior to mining. The WofE method was applied to ten known rockfalls along the Cataract River to evaluate the reduced impact of not mining within 50 m of cliff-lines along the Nepean River. There is significant reduction of probabilities of rockfall occurrence when mining is avoided within 50 m of cliffs.

The art of flotation may be divided into two distinct branches, namely:-1. Collective flotation.2. Selective flotation.(1) Collective flotation is applied when all the valuable minerals in an ore are required in one concentrate, leaving ,only gangue minerals in the tailing. The method is applicable, for instance, to such ores as auriferous copper sulphides associated with gangue minerals only, or to silver lead ores low enough in zinc and other valuable minerals.(2) Selective flotation is applied when there are present in an ore two or more valuable sulphides, which cannot be subsequently efficiently treated unless they are separated from one another as well as from the gangue. For example, a silver-Iead-zinc ore, or a copper-gold-iron ore; where the iron is not required with the copper gold concentrate.In order to make these operations practicable chemical reagents have been developed, having power to exert definite actions on the various minerals when brought into contact with them in a water pulp.COLLECTIVE FLOTATION.In order to bring about collective flotation it is generally necessary to add to the pulp a frothing agent and an activator or activators for all the minerals which it is desired to float.SELECTIVE FLOTATION.The object of selective flotation is to activate the mineral which is to be floated, and at the same time to prevent all other minerals from floating.

In order to develop the HF-free flotation reagent system, the main objective of this investigation was to study the possibility of separation of quartz from feldspar using non-ionic surfactants as the collector. The non-ionic surfactants used were polyoxyethyl cethyl ether (PECE) and polyethylene glycol monocethyl ether (PGME). The flotation behaviour of quartz and microcline with PECE and PGME was investigated. Each surfactant was a good selective collector for quartz with its recovery being influenced by pH and surfactant concentration. Quartz is floated favourably by both types of polyoxyethylene non-ionic surfactant whereas microcline was not so much. The floatability of quartz increases as the oxyethylene length of surfactants increases. Zeta potential measurements in the system of PGME/mineral were also carried out. It was determined that in the absence of PGME the points of zero charge for quartz and microcline should be approximately at pH 2.5 and 1.8, respectively. The addition of PGME to the system causes both minerals to become less negatively charged. Differences in the zeta potential value between quartz and microcline, in the presence of PGME, were detected. It can be suggested that the interaction of the oxyethylene group to the microcline surface should not be as strong as that to the quartz surface. In the mixed surfactant system of PGME and dodecylamine acetate (DAA), a small addition of DAA causes drastic enhancement of quartz flotation in the wide pH range of 1 ~ 10. The purpose and current practice of cable trusses in underground coal mines is briefly outlined and details of various cable truss designs are presented. The main part of the paper describes the in-situ performance of cable trusses installed as secondary supports in gateroads and recovery roads of longwall coalfaces. The performance analysis is based on the results of in-situ monitoring carried out at a number of sites at two underground coal mines within Australia. Truss performance has been assessed as load developed in relation to roof convergence, face position and time. Additionally, the influence of strata conditions, installation pattern/density, roadway layout and geometry have been taken into account. An analytical model has been developed to predict truss loads. The principal variables are listed and the basis of the model is described. Based upon behaviour observed in the field the model has been progressively upgraded and validated against measured performance. Guidelines on truss performance and factors which influence it are presented and the implications of these to the use of cable trusses is discussed. Possible methods for improving truss performance in certain strata conditions are outlined and some comments are made on the value of cable trussing compared to cable bolting in these Situations.

Reliable predictions of the long-term water quality and water level fluctuations in a final void are vital if mine operators propose to decommission final voids in open cut mining operations. The catchments feeding final voids typically comprise a large proportion of coal placed or re-shaped spoil piles. Spoil piles from open cut coal mining operations have distinctive hydrological characteristics, which result in unique run-off behaviour. There is a need to understand the nature of spoil hydrology processes in order to predict the long-term hydrological behaviour and water quality responses of such systems. Preliminary estimates indicate that it may take 20 or more years for a void to flood. It is impractical for mine owners and operators to wait until long-term hydrological and water quality conditions have been established in a void, before reaching agreement with regulators about mine closure conditions. Reliable simulation of the long-term water quality and water level fluctuations in a void are therefore. The adoption of an agreed modelling approach and sharing of results from field data programs could result in the establishment of a database that could be used, with regulatory approval, for assigning parameter values, without the need for a specific data collection program for every individual void. Industry and regulators should agree on the model adopted for predicting post-closure behaviour of spoil/void systems. This will require reliable, robust methods for field data collection. This paper describes the field monitoring, data collection, model preparation and simulations undertaken over a three year period for Australian Coal Association Research Projects (ACARP) Project C7007. It presents the findings of that research, and provides comment on aspects of the project that were undertaken well and on aspects that could have been done better. Limited data is presented in this paper due to confidentiality arrangements with the relevant mine sites.

The Jabiluka uranium mine was constructed in the Ngarradj catchment, a right bank tributary of Magela Creek in the Northern Territory. The Jabiluka Mineral Lease is adjacent to Kakadu National Park, near an area listed as Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention and recognised under the World Heritage Convention. In the late dry season of 1998 and prior to the 1998 - 1999 wet season, a stream-monitoring program was implemented in the Ngarradj catchment to collect baseline data on sediment transport within the catchment to assess and proactively manage associated impacts caused by mining at Jabiluka. Stream suspended mud concentration, stream discharge and rainfall data were collected for four wet seasons (1998 - 2002) giving an almost continuous data set. The stream system has high natural variability dependent on rainfall intensity and subsequent discharge and pre-wet season fire distribution and intensity. In general, mud concentration is elevated at the commencement of the wet season until about February. This is caused by first-flush removal of surface material detached during the dry season by agents such as bioturbation (including anthropogenic activity), wind erosion and surface desiccation. Water quality trigger values downstream of the mine were derived using upstream percentiles and the before-after-control-impact, paired site design. Both analyses showed no observable impact from mine construction in 1998 or during the study period. However, the impacts of dry season fires could be clearly detected. The data set provides good baseline information for future assessment at Jabiluka and demonstrates the need to view measured parameter values on a catchment-wide basis with knowledge of rainfall, discharge and fire distribution.

BlastLiteÖ is a low density explosive developed by Dyno Nobel and has been in use at BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Mt Whaleback Operation since March 2004. The Mt Whaleback Operation utilises BlastLite because it offers an attractive alternative to ANFO in soft to medium strength rock types. Its use also reduces the amount of liquid fuel oil consumed and is well aligned with BHP BillitonÆs corporate Energy Excellence initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This paper presents the:results of characterisation work completed on-site as a fourth year mining engineering thesis, and application and benefits of the product at Mt Whaleback. One of the key features of low density products is that the detonation is non-ideal. That is, the explosive does not react fully in the detonation driving zone. This manifests itself in that the product is highly dependent on charge diameter and confinement conditions. Dyno Nobel has access to the Vixen suite of detonation codes for characterising the ideal and non-ideal behaviour of explosives. The objectives of this work were to use the Vixen_i code to characterise the detonation performance of BlastLite, in order to understand the role of the bulking agent and to allow modelling of the explosive. The detonation performance was established by detonating a series of unconfined charges at various diameters and measuring the velocity of detonation (VoD). The work program consisted of sourcing and preparing cardboard tubes of various diameters (80 mm to 305 mm). The tubes were loaded with explosive at the BHP Billiton Iron Ore Mt Whaleback test range and detonated one at a time. Over the past three years BlastLite has been used in various applications across the site. Initial findings illustrate that shovel productivity from BlastLite shots was comparable to the baseline ANFO blasts. The study results were also backed with visual inspection and feedback from shovel operators. A work program is currently in place to develop different blends of BlastLite and TITAN« BlastLite to tailor the explosives to various blasting applications. The trials at Mt Whaleback are leading to future opportunities of BHP BillitonÆs satellite orebodies.

An experimental investigation of the hydraulic cuttability of coal from the Theiss Dampier Mitsui mine near Moura, Central Queen land illustrated the ability of established cutting equations to describe the behaviour of the coal during cutting. The experimental equipment developed for the work proved reliable. The results of the experimental programme are consistent with accumulated experience from overseas.

An accurate and rapid assessment of coal resources, such as that provided by computer modelling, forms an intergral role in evaluating CSR's coal deposits for future development. An in-house system utilising a number of geological, engineering, costing and financial evaluation routines has been developed for DEC VAX computers. The system is currently being upgraded and enhanced to meet the demands at the various mine sites. Computer modelling of the geology is performed on encoded drillhole information and coal core chemical and physical analyses. A conceptual mine plan is formulated then digitized and superimposed on the geological model. Insitu and product coal reserves and qualities as well as overburden and parting quantities are then calculated for each strip or block. These strip parameters are then transferred to the mine scheduling routines to determine the most efficient mining sequence for the mine plan. Cost factors and scheduling data for equipment specified in the conceptual mine plan are used in the mine costing subsystem. The financial subsystem then evaluates the likely return on investment. Future enhancements to the system include improvements in the response time through the introduction of interactive graphics, the direct interfacing of geophysical and analytical data, and further development of a geotechnical'database.

The method of supporting excavated roofs in underground coal mines by conventional roof bolting systems is challenged due to its shortcomings of being time-consuming and leading to possible unsafe installation. Though a few alternatives have been considered, the ultimate and most efficient bolting method has often been conceived as one using a self-drilling roof bolt, or a Rapid Face Bolting System (RFBS). The on-going Rapid Face Bolting Project undertaken by the University of Wollongong includes a special tubular bolt design.The tubular bolt designed for the RFBS is a "single-pass" bolt equipped with cutting tips used to drill a bolthole to accommodate the bolt. Different from that of the coring bit employed in geological site investigations, the principal design consideration for the tubular bolt is low cost associated with a small working life for the cutting tip.

In the above mechanism; the surface re- actions appear to be fast and not rate controll- ing. In a carbon surface deficient bed the diff- usion of oxychloride intermediate through the boundary layer to the carbon surface becomes the rate controlling step. In a zircon surface deficient bed the diffusion of oxychloride away from the zircon surface controls the reaction. This postulated mechanism can be used to ex-, plain the observed experimental effects.

Education for the Mineral Industry in Australia developed in an uncoordinated but effective fashion till the mid 1960's, with recognised quality in graduates, with output matching demand, and with industry needs being fulfilled. Then in the space of a further 20 years, as company structures expanded, as the number, complexity, and costs of mineral projects escalated, as educational facilities, costs and politics increased, as community perceptions and aspirations changed, as government control of minerals and education increased, and as mineral sales cycles and markets fluctuated widely, the very fabric of Australian Mineral Education fell in tatters. Extractive Metallurgy Education suffered most in this collapse, and no compre- hensive remedies have been initiated. We are all the losers. In the 1990's, the extraction of Australian minerals and metals will increase in international significance, and the education of Extractive Metallurgists must meet this need. After examining the current situation, a series of management strategies are proposed to enable Extractive Metallurgical Education to survive and prosper in the next two decades and beyond. These strategic proposals involve industry, the government, the educational bodies, and individuals, in a range of short and long term objectives, policies, and actions.

Central to this development is the role of visualisation, a crucial element in mining digitalisation. This paper aims to develop a data-driven visualisation solution for the construction of mining digital twins, highlighting how this innovation revolutionises the representation of physical mining environments. It spotlights the shortcomings of conventional visualisation methods, particularly their inability to accurately depict complex underground environments and their predominantly historical orientation. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel, data-driven approach. This approach extensively utilises CAD files, encompassing data from geological surveys to intricate mine plans, thereby significantly elevating the precision of digital twins. It supports real-time updates and enables flexible interaction with a variety of data types. Moreover, it introduces a comprehensive data diagram alongside the adaptation of a 3D tile index. This strategy ensures the efficient rendering of extensive mining environments, allowing for a more dynamic and interactive digital twin model. In conclusion, the implementation of data-driven visualisation in the construction of mining digital twins marks a pivotal advancement in the industry’s digital transformation. It promises a more detailed, accurate, and dynamic depiction of mining operations.

In-Situ Resource Utilisation and Off-Earth mining require the application of horizontal drilling. The stability of such openings is challenging when excavating in the lunar regolith. Excavations on the Moon will encounter unconventional operational conditions such as different material properties, low gravity, and a moonquake. Micro-tunnelling or drilling to support lunar exploration and development of infrastructure on the Moon requires stability analysis to ensure its desired performance. The discrete element method (DEM) modelling technique has been utilised to investigate the optimum opening sizes on the lunar soil. From the literature, the mechanical properties of the lunar regolith have been reviewed and used for numerical model development. The model has been calibrated by simulating numerical triaxial tests with the Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion. Then, detailed parametric studies have been performed to investigate the influence of confinement, opening dimensions and moonquakes on the stability of openings. The findings have led to the development of a simple stability chart of the relationship between unsupported opening sizes and lunar regolith properties at different depths.

Working thick coal seams in Poland is a very serious problem. Nearly 40 per cent of all coal is extracted from seams more than 3 m. thick. In absolute figures this represents about 70 million tons of coal per year. Working seams with thicknesses up to 3.5 m. does not present, at present, major difficul- ties. Working thicker seams calls for a steady improvement in order to increase the degree of utilization of the deposit and to enlarge the concentration of output. The problem is sometimes more difficult because, in many cases, the seams are worked under protected surface structures which compels the mines to use hydraulic stowing with all its advantages and disadvantages. Rock burst hazard, the control of which is the basic problem hindering the mining, is a further problem. The mining systems used in Poland are adapted to these natural and technical conditions.

Although it is well understood that in flotation collection zone and froth zone are deeply interconnected, and reagents (and in particular collectors and frothers) cannot be selected without considering their synergistic effect, this concept is rarely applied in plant practice. The feed mineralogy also has an important role in how particles and reagents interact in flotation, which is sometimes overlooked by operators. In this work, a combination of batch flotation tests and froth stability measurements was used to optimise the collector and frother scheme for the flotation of a copper ore. The methodology was applied to an Australian copper plant which was experiencing high variability in froth stability in the roughers when the feed ore mineralogy was changing. It was hypothesised that chalcopyrite in the feed in combination with isobutyl-xanthate had a destabilising effect on the froth phase under the reagents scheme used. Froth stability was restored if a shorter chain length, less hydrophobic, xanthate was employed. It is apparent that the hydrophobicity of adsorbed films at the solid/liquid/air interfaces has a critical role in enhancing or reducing froth stability. Unstable froth causes a reduction in copper recovery in spite of a high collection zone flotation rate. The case study suggests that collection zone and froth zone can rarely be optimised independently of each other. With the laboratory procedure adopted, a more suitable reagents scheme was determined to respond to changes in the feed mineralogy, avoiding fluctuations in plant performance due to unexpected froth instability.CITATION:Farrokhpay, S and Zanin, M, 2012. In recent years rapid advances have been made in the technology used for hydrology and erosion modelling of rural catchments. These advances have been driven by the growing availability of digital terrain maps that can be used to automatically define catchment properties that previously had to be manually extracted from contour maps. In addition, these models have, in principle at least, more powerful predictive capability. The author is involved in a number of projects to migrate and further develop these models for application to mine rehabilitation assessment. Current technologies for hydrology and erosion assessment (eg CREAMS, ANSWERS) are reviewed, underlying principles highlighted and deficiencies in the context of mine rehabilitation design assessment addressed. The advantages and disadvantages of the new digital terrain map tools (eg WEPP, SIBERIA) are discussed. Current work integrating these new models with existing rehabilitation design tools (eg ACIRL's ARGUS computer package) highlights the advantages of an integrated approach using digital terrain maps; cheaper, faster, lower impact and more flexible rehabilitation design. The use of novel visualisation tools to aid the design process is discussed. The paper is illustrated by applications to mine sites in Queensland and the Northern Territory.

This paper presents an analysis of significant Australian-based R&D programs focussed on the minerals industry, which was commissioned by CRC ORE. The landscape analysis may assist organisations with R&D management issues including program creation, program/partner selection, portfolio management, and public policy settings. The dataset was collated early in 2020, and contains programs being conducted by or with Australian-based ‘Research Service Providers’ (RSPs), most notably Universities and CSIRO. It does not include R&D being conducted in-house by mining and METS companies, or by them with other organisations that are not RSP’s. The dataset contains 65 R&D programs, with total annual cash funding of $229m (70% from industry and 30% from government). The total funding compares unfavourably with the combined R&D expenditure of Australian universities and CSIRO of over $12b, and minerals industry export revenues of over $200b. The R&D landscape is analysed by program numbers and funding, technical domain, geography, and funding source. Areas of relative strength are noted in ‘mineral processing’, CSIRO Minerals, and the CRC program. Areas of relative weakness are noted in ‘bulk materials handling and logistics’, ‘tailings and waste management’, and ‘social and community’. The field of preconcentration is noted as a current area of R&D strength, but it is under significant threat with the impending completion of CRC ORE. The overall R&D landscape is characterised by a majority of small-scale programs, low levels of industry coordination, a low focus on step-change innovation, and total funding lower than should be expected for such a large critical industry. It is hoped that key stakeholders in the Australian minerals industry, particularly governments, and mining and METS companies, reflect on the analysis and act to address holistic weaknesses.

During 1995 a catastrophic accident took place at the No 2 Vaal Reefs shaft in South Africa, when a locomotive fell onto a cage, causing the death of 104 people. The subsequent Commission of Enquiry found that the safety detaching hook had opened when hit by parts of the falling locomotive, detaching the cage from the rope and allowing the cage to drop 400 m down the shaft. It was believed that had the hook not detached, the rope would have been sufficiently elastic not to have failed, implying that many fatalities may have been avoided. In addition, the risk of accidental opening of hooks due to impact with smaller falling objects in shafts became a concern. This paper deals with a comprehensive statistical investigation that was performed to quantify this risk, establish acceptable levels of such risks and to derive criteria for the resistance of detachment hooks against accidental opening caused by impacts. The investigation involved a survey, dynamic finite element analyses and Monte Carlo simulations.
