As part of a long-term acid rock drainage (ARD) mitigation study, PT Freeport Indonesia has completed the construction of a highly instrumented, full-scale, experimental, overburden stockpile to further evaluate the behaviour of the waste rock system at Grasberg mine. A total of 24 lysimeters, 30 sets of thermistor strings and 48 oxygen-sampling ports were installed at select locations during stockpile construction. ARD flow rates and chemistry have been recorded since the start of overburden rock placement in April 2000. Measurements of in situ temperatures and oxygen concentrations quantify reaction rates and the oxygen pathways that control oxidation kinetics deep within the waste rock profile. Direct field observations show the significance of advective oxygen flow with respect to the onset of oxidation kinetics. Oxygen measurements show that the rubble zone that forms at the base of a waste rock bench provides a critical pathway for oxygen entry to the waste rock profile. Furthermore, rapid oxidation as evidenced by measured temperature increases deep within the panels of waste rock is observed to occur. The observations presented in this paper provide critical insight for understanding the mechanisms and behaviour of full-scale waste rock stockpiles with respect to ARD generation. The results of this program will assist in the future selection, testing and evaluation of appropriate mitigation measures with respect to surface and face treatments to reduce long-term ARD generation. This project is a work in progress, and at least another two-years will be required to fully understand site-specific ARD generation and ARD mitigation mechanisms. This paper will discuss various design and construction considerations, provide an overview of results achieved to date, and some preliminary interpretation of what is happening within the overburden stockpiles.

The paper describes the studies conducted to date on the short term adsorption/desorption of gases in coal from the point of view of developing techniques to predict imminent outbursting conditions in coal mines. A number of different parameters such as'dP express, K' and AV 0/60 etc. which have been effectively used overseas were studied on samples of coal from Westcliff and Leichhardt Colliery. Results indicate that these do not seem to be valid indices for predicting an outbursting condition. Based upon desorption isotherms, a new index defined as "L" has been developed which shows promising results. This index is in a position to differentiate the changes in the structures of coal and its proness to outbursts. The "LZ value determinations and its usefulness opens a new field where it would be possible to determine outbursting conditions from existing drill cores obtained during exploration studies or from long holes drilled in advance from underground workings. The index is more or less independent of the time elapsed between the extraction of a sample and the conduct of the test. The test for "L" can be conducted'on site or in the laboratory. The test is simple, easy to carry out and the "L" value for a sample can be calculated in less than 20 minutes. It could be adapted as a routine test for monitoring outburst conditions in mines.

The Sundance gold mine, located 2.5 km east of the town of Batchelor in the Northern Territiory, has produced over 5300 oz of gold since it was discovered in 1978. Sundance is unique in the Pine Creek Inlier in that the ore is hosted in palaeo-karst detritus and crystalline magnesite of the Early Proterozoic Coomalie Dolomite. This paper presents a summary of the geology of the mine, and describes the methods used during the two periods of mining.

Iron ore mining is a major source of export income for Australia. However with the decreasing reserves of high-grade, low-phosphorus hematite ore, there is mounting pressure to provide consistent mineralogical ore grade. Enhanced 3D characterisation and modelling are crucial to respond to these exigent requirements. To tackle this problem a revolutionary mine-based, imaging system (based on Visible Near Infrared û Short Wave Infrared reflectance spectroscopy û VNIR-SWIR) has been developed. This innovative, CSIRO-built prototype produces mineralogical maps that will have a major impact on ore grade characterisation. Australian iron ore companies will benefit immensely by pioneering this emerging and unique mining technology. The significance of VNIR-SWIR reflectance spectroscopy is well demonstrated with field portable spectrometers and airborne hyperspectral systems. At the mine-scale level, this newly developed imaging system will allow accurate and objective mineralogical mapping of mine faces and benches with very closely spaced sampling. These spectral mineral maps will improve deposit delineation and bring accurate and objective ore grade characterisation that will minimise drilling and enhance ore recovery. This will in turn lead to cost saving and better long-term block model planning. This system will also improve safety for mine geologists in providing mineralogical information at a distance, avoiding the need for any close contact with the mine face. The mine imaging concept is a logical response to the industry need for automatic and objective tools for sustainable and future mining practices.

"The carbon-in-pulp process has been used extensively in the gold industry since the late 1970s to recovery leached gold from solution. Despite more than 30 years of experience in operating carbon circuits, average gold solution loss has remained at an average of 0.02–0.03 ppm (mg/L), higher than the ‘best practice’ target of 0.01 ppm.Process modelling, such as SIMCIL developed by the Curtin Gold Technology Group (GTG), can provide information on optimum set points; however, manual control of the circuit limits the potential benefits.An automated carbon measurement device, the Scout Carbon Meter, has been developed to allow for automation of carbon concentration measurement, and automated control of the carbon transfer pumps. The Earth's Upper Mantle is dominantly peridotitic but in convergent margin regions, such as the S.W. Pacific, subduction of oceanic crust gives greater chemical and petrological diversity to upper mantle petrology and petrogenesis. Examination of currently active, Quaternary and Tertiary volcanism in the S.W. Pacific, particularly seeking information from ocean floor sampling to characterize the basement to island arcs and to investigate active spreading centres, consistently points to parental magmas of basaltic to picritic character. However, these parental magmas are chemically diverse and it is not possible to designate a characteristic 'island arc' or 'convergent margin' petrogenesis in the sense of a characteristic mantle source composition and a charactistic partial melting regime. In this respect, magma genesis at convergent margins contrasts with that at oceanic spreading centres. Our studies emphasize the importance of source peridotite ranging from 'fertile lherzolite' (i.e. compositions with 3-4% CaO, A12O3, 0.3-0.5% Na2O) to refractory harzburgite (

Desktop X-ray powder diffraction using a D2 PHASER equipped with fast linear detector was performed on several iron ore and mill scale samples. Data were analysed using cluster analysis and Rietveld quantitative phase analysis. The quantitative mineralogy of both materials could be established. Thus the input is provided for understanding the energy consumption and the CO2 emission during iron production. Furthermore, tabletop XRD allows to distinguish iron ore from mill scales and to quantify their mixtures.

Removal of moisture in steam-fluidized, mainly steam-heated, fluidized beds makes possible significant energy savings over conventional forms of large-scale drying. The systens are described and their applications to brown coal and alumina hydrate are reviewed. In application to brown coal the use of the system to permit meeting diurnal variation in power station output, and the use of triple-effect drying to minimise coal usage and to avoid the necessity of recovering in the turbines the energy in the steam from the last dryer are discussed. To facilitate the rapid adoption of the systems proposed, studies are being made of heat-transfer to dried coal, of moisture equilibrium in pressurized and vacuum systems, of tapered beds as a means of reducing carrier steam and permitting wider size variation, and of the use of carrier solids for drying lump materials.

The effect of blast vibration on highwall stability is a common concern for many open pit mines. Vibration in such a case is a typical near-field blast vibration situation. Vibration modelling in the near-field of a blast requires consideration of both the amplitude and frequency attenuation of waveforms with distance. Most existing blast vibration models are designed for far-field vibration and do not simulate the frequency attenuation and its effect on waveform shape. With the advent of electronic detonators it is desirable to quantify the effects of blast delay on the amplitude as well as the frequency of blast vibrations. A suitable modelling tool is proposed here. At present, a blast vibration model with double attenuations(amplitude and frequency) has been developed at Orica. The present model simulates the amplitude and frequency attenuations separately using different transfer functions. The amplitude attenuation is modelled according to the non-linear relation between the peak particle velocity (PPV) and the charge weight scaled distance established from the signature hole vibration. The frequency attenuation is modelled with the signal broadening based on KjartanssonÆs transfer function û a linear model for attenuation of waves. The model is capable of taking multiple sets of signature waveforms as input to improve the modelling accuracy of the wave propagation in the geology at a site. The screening effect of the earlier firing holes in the path of a later firing hole is taken into account on not only the amplitude, but also frequency attenuation. The present blast vibration model is suitable for modelling both near-field and far-field blast vibrations. It yields reasonable agreement with measured field data for the near-field vibration examples discussed.

Pressure filters were found to be necessary to produce Elura silver/lead and zinc concentrates at sufficiently low moisture contents for bulk cargo shipment by sea to smelters.The difficulty in obtaining low moistures was due to the fine primary grind, 80% passing 45 microns, and resultant fine concentrates, 97% passing 45 microns.The filtration system was designed to filter up to 90,000 tonnes/year silver/lead concentrates and up to 130,000 tonnes/year zinc concentrates.This paper details the preliminary test work to select Larox automatic pressure filters, and the commissioning and operation of these filters to achieve design criteria for both concentrates. The design criteria for both concentrates have been bettered due to the concentrates being coarser than the design sizing.

The duration of acid mine drainage flowing out of underground mines is important in the design of watershed restoration and abandoned mine land reclamation projects. People conducting land reclamation projects usually employ remediation strategies once (reshaping land, revegetating soils, and installing water treatment) with the hope that these methods will adequately improve water quality for a long time, with little planning for future changes. An understanding of changing acid water conditions from underground mines over time will help in designing efficient and cost-effective treatment methods. Past studies have reported that acid water flows from underground mines for hundreds of years with little change, while others state that poor drainage quality may last only 20 to 40 years. Several factors are important in making a prediction of drainage quality over time, such as inundation or flooding history, coal seam characteristics (primarily sulfur content), residence time of water in the mine, time since mine closure, mining method and amount of coal remaining, collapse of roof and other disturbances within the mine, and subsequent nearby surface mining. More than 150 above-drainage (those not flooded after abandonment) underground mine discharges were located and sampled during 1968 in northern West Virginia, and we revisited 44 of those sites in 2000 and measured water flow, pH, acidity, alkalinity, Fe, Al, and sulfate. All 44 discharges were from mines in the Pittsburgh and Upper Freeport coal seams, and both seams have been extensively mined in this area during the past 70 years. We sampled during the same months (June to October) as were sampled in 1968, and we found no significant difference in flows between 1968 and 2000. Therefore, we felt that the water quality data could be compared and that the data represented real changes in pollutant concentrations. There were significant water quality differences between year and coal seam, but no differences between disturbed and undisturbed mines. Average acidity declined 79 per cent between 1968 and 2000 in Pittsburgh mines (from 3342 to 702 mg/L), and 56 per cent in Upper Freeport mines (from 1189 to 519 mg/L). Iron decreased an average of about 80 per cent across all sites (from an average of 345 to 69 mg/L), while sulfate decreased between 50 to 75 per cent. Pittsburgh seam discharge water was much worse in 1968 than Upper Freeport seam water. Twenty of our 44 sites had water quality information during 1980, which served as a midpoint to assess the slope of the decline in acidity and metal concentrations. Almost all parameters showed an exponential rate of decline in acidity, iron, and sulfate.

This paper describes the MillMapper technology developed for condition monitoring of liners and other operational parameters in grinding mills used for mineral comminution, by presenting a case study of its application. MillMapper provides maintenance engineers, operations managers and process and plant metallurgists with quantitative, accurate and reliable condition monitoring data for informed decision making regarding the maintenance and metallurgical aspects of such mills. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanners for the capture of three-dimensional surface representations inside a mill during a shutdown so as to determine shell, feed and discharge liner thickness at a resolution of several million data points, a procedure that nominally takes five minutes to complete. Once several data sets over time have been collected inside a mill, MillMapper can be used for liner wear, liner wear zone, liner weight, ball charge volume, ball charge weight and intelligent profile tracking over time. Liner tracking in combination with site defined reline and failure criteria and with throughput tonnage data is utilised for change out prediction of each separate liner segment type.

The proposed Lihir open pit gold mine is located on Lihir Island in New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea. The mine will be located within a volcanic caldera, part of which forms the adjacent Luise Harbour. Kennecott Corporation started engineering design work in 1988 and ended in 1993 when a Feasibility Report was submitted to the Papua New Guinea government by RTZ/Kennecott. The project will be managed by the Lihir Management Company. The mining operation will produce approximately 350 Mt of waste and 62 Mt of low-grade ore over the life of open pit mining. Landforms and traditional land use by Lihirians preclude storing mine waste and some of the low-grade ore on land close to the mine site. The mine waste will be composed of hard rock and soft soild like material which cannot be safely used to construct large land waste repositories by truck dumping. Submarine disposal by bottom discharging barges is the only safe disposal method. The barges will also be required to construct a waste platform along the shore for stockpiling low-grade ore. A simulation model of the waste handling system was written in GPSS/H¦ to assist engineers in selecting the optimum size and quantity of barges and loading docks by analysing the interaction between excavators, trucks and barges. The simulation model was written in enough details to model the various functions that will be encountered during mining. Input parameters allowed for variations in the size and number of trucks, shovels, barges and loading docks. Variations in loading, hauling, and dumping times were from user specified distributions. In order to visualise the interaction between the components of the waste mining operation, the simulation was animated using Proof AnimationT""'. It is believed that this is the first application of an animated simulation study for a mine still in the planning stages.

Geological domains describe the mineralisation state and stratigraphic location of different geological regions of mines. They play a very important role at the geological modelling stage as weight percentage of chemical elements information within each geological domain is assumed to be correlated while information coming from different geological domains is considered uncorrelated. Having correct domain assignments to both the chemical assays and the 3D space of modelling is critical for building a reliable geological model of the mine.As standard practice significant effort is invested into the interpretation of the deposit and identification of the geological domains for the chemical assays and the 3D geological space. Despite these efforts, there are some chemical assays with ambiguous geological domain where the exploration assay domain and the block domain do not match. Incorrectly including a sample in the wrong domain can cause a large change in the predicted weight percentage of chemical elements estimation for that block. Therefore, the major challenge of grouping the spatially correlating weight percentage of chemical elements is how to determine which of these domains best fits these misclassified samples.This work proposes machine learning based autonomous technique for identifying to which geological domain (the exploration assay domain or the block domain) the misclassified sample belongs. The proposed methodology is based on Gaussian Process (GP) classification. The GP machine learning approach consists of training and inference stages. At the training stage the GP automatically learns the properties of different geological domains using the chemical assays with unambiguous domain assignment. Then, at the inference stage the GP makes predictions for the geological domains of the assays with ambiguous initial domain assignment.We tested the proposed technique by conducting a case study for an iron ore deposit located in Western Australia. The results demonstrate that the application of the proposed GP technique removes statistically significant deviations in the assay values in many regions: mineralised ore region, unmineralised region, highly weathered region and intrusive material that is highly variable. In this case study the proposed methodology autonomously identified the geological domains for more than 50 per cent of samples which are initially ambiguously classified. Strata bolting/dowelling reinforcement techniques are being reintroduced into the mines of the National Coal Board. There are strong reasons for the selection of the full hole anchorage principle of bolting and for the development of the wood/resin dowel. There are strong reasons also for the measurement of strata bed separation as the method of assessing the effectiveness of a roof bolting system. There are several designs of bolts. Instruments have been developed for investigation and control purposes. Different drilling and bolting machines have been employed in trial sites. In addition comparative laboratory model work has been conducted on simple non-bolted and bolted systems.

Drum winders have now been built to attain depths of 3000 m and more in a single lift in accordance with the South African Code of Practice SABS 0294, which was introduced at the time of the last hoisting conference in 2000. Since then, this code has not only been followed for several winders in South Africa but was also followed in deep mines in Canada. Design of winders and their braking systems are described in the paper. Koepe winders are in use for high payloads of up to 50 t and to hoisting depths of around 2100 m. As known, the stress range of the hoisting ropes is the key parameter for rope fatigue. However, as per the SABS Code of Practice 0294, relying on static design is not the answer to the question of where the limits are for Koepe installation. The paper describes factors that are recognised to have influence in rope life and suggests definition of new design criteria for friction winders in order to get viable solutions for high-capacity hoisting from deep mines similar to drum hoisting.

AIR-LOCK AT No. 14 SHAFT.Some time ago it became desirable to raise and lower the McBride tunnel men to save them walking the inclined tunnel, about a mile in length, with a dip of nearly 600 ft., and a maximum gradient of 1 in 4. The main Upcast shaft, No. 14, was, therefore, equipped for winding the men. As this shaft was the main ventilating shaft for the McBride tunnel mine, it was necessary to take the greatest precautions against leakage of air. The writer therefore devised the concrete structure shown in Plate 1.The structure, as shown, surrounds the shaft inside the poppet legs. As the men are wound on double-decked cages (twelve men to each deck) provision is made at both top and bottom for the two decks to be loaded and emptied simultaneously. The doorsover the sky shaft, shown in the drawing, have been cut out and the sky shaft has been close-timbered with a double layer of T. and G. flooring boards, with building paper between, nearly up to the thimble frame, a small hole only being left for the winding rope topass through. The space between the ramps is glazed with plate glass to allow the winding-engine driver a good view of the pit top.The men are wound from two levels, 302 ft. and 611 ft.2. Since the early days of flotation, process technicians have known that the speed at which the froth is recovered over the lip of the cell has a very direct and consistent influence on the grade and recovery of the circuit. No plant would deny that, even to this day, one of the most important aspects of a process technicianÆs job is ensuring that the froth is moving at a desired and controlled speed over the lip. Unfortunately, process technicians cannot watch the froth throughout the entire shift, as there are always other problems to attend to. A considerable amount of work has thus been done to develop a æsystemÆ that automatically measures the speed of the froth. This measurement would then be used in simple controllers to emulate the steps taken by the process technician in correcting deviations of the froth speed from its desired level. Many of the earlier attempts to measure speed were ineffective, as they were unable to cope with turbulence on the froth surface. The FrothMasterÖ instrument makes use of machine vision technologies to measure the speed of the froth over the lip of a cell at a very high sampling rate. This instrument produces an extremely reliable and accurate measurement of the froth speed (as well as other parameters such as bubble size and froth stability). As we will show, the effectiveness of the speed measurement in controlling the performance of the plant is a testimony to its reliability. Three FrothMasterÖ units have recently been installed on the Cadia Hills Gold Mine in New South Wales (Australia). The objectives of this installation were:to control the mass-recovery of two Tank Cells in series on the same level where differences in the hydrostatic head between the two cells result in the cells pulling inconsistently with respect to each other; control of the concentrate grade (per cent copper) from the first rougher; reduction in the frother consumption in the rougher circuit by monitoring the froth speed. A simple controller was designed to react to disturbances in the same way that human operators react. This was done after consultation with the metallurgists and the process technicians at Cadia. The controller had two functions: Stabilisation: The stabilising controller made use of three manipulated variables (level, frother addition rate and aeration rate) to control the froth speed to a setpoint. Optimisation: The optimising controller adjusted the froth speed setpoint based on deviations of the grade (measured in real-time by the OSA) from a setpoint. The plant metallurgist adjusted the grade setpoint based on information about the ore. The results from a 21-day trial have shown the following:The ratio of concentrate mass-recovery between two cells in series on the same level has been successfully balanced, thereby overcoming problems due to differences in hydrostatic heads. It is possible to control the speed of the froth, in mm/s, to within five per cent of its setpoint using the aforementioned manipulated variables. It has also been shown that, for reliable control, it is necessary to control more than just one variable (eg level or air). The grade of the first rougher concentrate has been controlled to within 0.3 per cent of the grade setpoint for long periods of time, which has important implications for the circuit recovery. The frother consumption has been reduced significantly. This paper will thus show that substantial progress has been made to demonstrate the value of using on-line froth speed measurements in flotation plant control to obtain real financial benefits.

New structural studies in the Walker Fault Zone of eastern Arnhem Land are integrated with basin-wide reconnaissance observations, made to refine models for the structural evolution of the McArthur Basin and provide new insights into the nature of metal logenetical ly important pre-inversion phases of the basin's evolution. At least five principal events may be identified during the Proterozoic: The Tawallah Group and equivalents were deposited throughout the McArthur Basin during an extensional event. Rifting of an incipient Batten Trough occurred at this time, in a terrain characterised by orthogonal, linked extensional faults. Uplift and erosion of the Tawallah Group accompanied continuing extension and was penecontemporaneous with continuing deposition of the overlying Parsons Range Group, within a precursor to the Walker Trough. Dt (of the Walker Fault Zone) relates to a new rifting event, penecontemporaneous with deposition of the McArthur Group and its equivalents in the Walker and Batten Troughs. This rifting accompanied dextral strike-slip faulting along northerly-trending bounding faults, as a result of northwesterly-directed oblique extension, leading to pull-apart basins. D2 inversion of the Batten and Walker Fault Zones pre-dates deposition of the Roper Group. In the proposed model WNW-ESE directed shortening (D2.), accompanied by folding and thrusting, and by local development of cleavage in the Walker Fault Zone, is seen to be followed by northerly-trending sinistral faulting (D2b), about a SE to ESE-directed compression. D3 is basin-wide and post-dates the Roper Group. It is characterised by conjugate faulting and folding about ENE to NE-directed compression. The latest Proterozoic event to be identified (D4) comprises widespread north-trending strike-slip dextral faulting of Roper Group, coupled with N-S directed thrusting across the Urapunga Fault Zone and Murphy Inlier This is accompanied by late dextral reactivation of NNW to NNE-trending faults in the Walker and Batten Fault Zones.

Mechanical cleaning of coal was porforined in a few small plants in New South Wales from 1577 brit the first large coal washeries were built by Broken Hill Wbprietary Company Limited and Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Limited in the late 1940's. Mechanization of colleries in the 1950bs was abcomp" anied by construction of many coal washing plants and in the 1960's the growth of the coal export trade gave further impetus to the coal preparation industry. Design of coal preparation plants in Australia is modelled on practice overseas. Planning of a new plant in- volves investigation of many factors both technical and economic and the preparation of a specification by the operator for the designer's guidance. A wide range of preparation processes and equipment is on offer, but the nature of the coal to be treated and the separating efficiency desired usually dictate process selection. Simple or moderately difficult separation can be achieved with jigs, shaking tables or water washing cyclones. Coal which is difficult to treat or which has to be cut at a specific gravity lower than 1.5 is normally washed in a heavy medium process. In large plants it is usual to separate the coal into large, small and fine fractions and concentrate each fraction in a circuit designed to suit the grain size handled.
