The latent conditions clause in various general conditions of contract have traditionally proved to be a source of significant disputes in tunnelling contracts, even when extensive geotechnical investigations have been carried out at the tunnel site and a report of these investigations provided with the tender documents, informing the contractor of the nature and extent of subsurface conditions likely to be met with during execution of the works. This paper discusses the contractual aspects of the new latent conditions clause in the recent Australian Standard AS 2124-1986, General Conditions of Contract, in relation to tunnelling contracts. A comparison of this new clause is made with other latent conditions clauses in general conditions of contract in use in Australia and other commonwealth countries. It is seen that the new latent conditions clause in the recent Australian Standard 2124-1986 has, by providing for a reasonable apportionment of risks, attempted to minimize contractual disputes relating to latent conditions in tunnelling contracts and to provide a satisfactory basis for quick and efficient settlement of such disputes should they arise during execution of these contracts.

The island chains of the Western Pacific (Fig. 1), on account of their related origin, and the similarity of the rocks that compose them, constitute in the main a most homogeneous mineral province. They lie in a complex "mobile" zone of the earth's crust, that formed a geosynclinal area separating the continental margins of Australia and South-Eastern Asia (the so-called Sundaland) from each other, and from the margin of the Pacific Ocean proper (FIg. 2). The whole region was drowned at the close of the Ice Age, as a result of the rise of sea-level that accompanied the melting of the great ice caps in the polar regions, leaving only the higher portions as islands and peninsulas, many of them separated only by shallow seas or "shelves."The geosyncline was infilled with Mesozoic and Tertiary sediments that have undergone varying intensities of folding and metamorphism, and has been subject to intermittent periods of volcanic activity, continuing into the present. Midway between the two continental margins there is a narrow belt of pronounced negative gravity anomalies, with an extraordinary S-shaped convolution in the vicinity of the Banda Sea and Celebes, that marks the core of this unstable region. The folding within the "mobile" zonetrends parallel to it, so that the islands in its vicinity, which are regions elevated by folding, are all elongated in the strike direction of the folds. This explains not only the linear shape of Sumatra and Java, but the arc of islands enclosing the Banda Sea, and the peculiar shape of Celebes.Parallel to the belt of negative anomalies, at a close remove from it, is the line of Recent, or active volcanoes, that extends along the whole length of Sumatra and Java...

The refractory industry in New Zealand is small, consisting of two main manufacturers - one at Huntly and the other at Kamo. Together these would have an annual refractory production of about 30 000 tonnes. The industries which use refractories include two steelworks, NewZealand Steel Limited and Pacific Steel Limited, the former is involved in continuous casting from sponge, iron and scrap steel and the latter is involved in ingot teaming from scrap steel and steel billets; One aluminium smelter, cement works, dairy companies, small foundries producing engineering requirements and many other small users. The New Zealand manufacturers produce refractories in thefire brick range, that is up to 50 per cent alumina content (ignited basis), based on indigenous raw materials and in the high alumina range up to 85 per cent alumina content (ignited basis) based on imported bauxites. All of the basic refractories high purity silica and high alumina low alkali refractories and many of the higher grade acid resisting refractories are imported.

A background characterisation study was carried out in the Sangre de Cristo mountains, New Mexico, to: quantify naturally occurring contaminant loads from mineralised areas; define site-specific background concentrations; and to determine key factors controlling spatial and temporal variations in contaminant concentrations. The study included a comprehensive sampling and testing program (paste pH/EC, ABA, leach extraction tests) of soil/bedrock from mineralised areas (including erosional scars), and a ground water and surface water quality monitoring program in selected mineralised watersheds. Results demonstrate that high concentrations of contaminants occur naturally in ground and surface water draining the mineralised area of the Red River basin. The erosional scars were found to represent the major source of acid rock drainage (ARD) (~66 per cent) in this area due to: high rates of weathering and erosion, which continually exposes sulfide-bearing outcrops; and high rates of run-off as a result of high elevation and lack of vegetation. The scar material is generally very acidic (paste pH ranges from 8.5 to 1.5; average = 3.6) with highly elevated concentrations of sulfate and leachable metals. The composition and concentration of leachable metals vary significantly, not only between scars but also within a given scar. While all streams draining the various scar watersheds are highly acidic, each has a characteristic æfingerprintÆ of sulfate and metal concentrations. Most of the run-off from the scars infiltrates into alluvial debris flow aprons and reaches the Red River via groundwater flow.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Microcharacterisation, such as that described in this paper, provides understanding of a mineral system at multiple scales, and understanding microscale variations is the key to understanding the large-scale variations in a mineral system. More than 50 high-grade lode samples from across Plutonic Gold Mine (Plutonic), Marymia Inlier, Western Australia were analysed by a variety of techniques, including micro X-ray fluorescence (µXRF) mapping, micro X-ray computed tomography (µCT), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field emission gun SEM, electron back-scatter detector (EBSD), proton-induced X-ray emission microprobe and synchrotron XRF mapping. These data demonstrate that competency contrasts are the key to governing the location of Au mineralisation at Plutonic. Micro CT imaging of high-grade samples shows the Au filling in voids and pore-space in the rock, after having travelled along more permeable layers and already existing or reaction-induced pores formed during hydrothermal circulation. Using 3D visualisation, the Au is seen to form a connected network that appears undisturbed at the scale of the samples, and a high-grade Au deposition event was one of the last events to affect the rock. This interpretation is supported by SEM analyses on high-grade samples that reveal calc-silicate (epidote-clinozoisite) alteration that is not present in lower Au grade samples, which are typically dominated by potassic alteration, and that sulfides are typically less abundant close to the Au. The replacement of biotite by chlorite is an alteration associated with the high-grade Au-mineralising fluid. Gold is coarsest where Au particles are located on the margins of minerals, typically sulfide and quartz grains, suggesting the importance of rheological contrast at the microscale. Furthermore, EBSD data reveals that Au is undeformed and overprints peak metamorphic and retrograde minerals. Data confirm recent deposit-scale observations, suggesting that deposition of high-grade, visible Au was related to a hydrothermal fluid circulation event late in the geological history of Plutonic.CITATION:Gazley, M F, Duclaux, G, Fisher, L A, Hough, R M and Pearce, M A, 2015. An underground mine, a treatment plant and supporting facilities have been constructed at Lebong Tandai in Sumatra, Indonesia by PT Lusang Mining. Throughput is initially 50,000 tonnes per annum of ore with an inbuilt capability to expand to 100,000 tonnes per annum. Construction proceeded in parallel with design work on a tightly controlled critical path schedule. The very remote location of the mine, the difficult access and the fact that equipment was imported from many parts of the world presented a challenging project management problem. The transport system, which involves road, river and rail and support facilities on site had to be brought into full operation prior to the arrival of major equipment. Mine development involved the reopening of the old access drives and workings, refurbishing two shafts and the haulage system together with redevelopment of old stoping areas and the opening of new stoping areas. Ore production is now from three main areas using shrink and underhand stoping methods. Ore breaking and drive development is with conventional airleg mounted rockdrills and ANFO explosives. Exploration to locate and develop new reserves to replace ore mined is an ongoing activity.

The most important aspect of modelling a geological variable, such as metal grade, is the spatial correlation. Spatial correlation describes the relationship between realisations of a geological variable sampled at different locations. Any method for spatially modelling such a variable should be capable of accurately estimating the true spatial correlation. Conventional kriged models are the most commonly used in mining for estimating grade or other variables at unsampled locations, and these models use the variogram or covariance function to model the spatial correlations in the process of estimation. However, this usage assumes the relationships of the observations of the variable of interest at nearby locations are only influenced by the vector distance between the locations. This means that these models assume linear spatial correlation of grade. In reality, the relationship with an observation of grade at a nearby location may be influenced by both distance between the locations and the value of the observations (ie non-linear spatial correlation, such as may exist for variables of interest in geometallurgy). Hence this may lead to inaccurate estimation of the ore reserve if a kriged model is used for estimating grade of unsampled locations when non-linear spatial correlation is present. Copula-based methods, which are widely used in financial and actuarial modelling to quantify the non-linear dependence structures, may offer a solution. This method was introduced by Bßrdossy and Li (2008) to geostatistical modelling to quantify the non-linear spatial dependence structure in a groundwater quality measurement network. Their copula-based spatial modelling is applied in this research paper to estimate the grade of 3D blocks. Furthermore, real-world mining data is used to validate this model. The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has developed an airborne sensor, the SWIR Full Spectrum Imager (SFSI) which detects in the Short Wave Infrared range of the solar spectrum from 1220 to 2420nm. In June of 1995, a demonstration flight was undertaken in the state of Nevada with the support of the companies listed above. The focus of the flight was to collect image data over well known mineral deposits with the objective of evaluating the applicability of this sensor to alteration mineral mapping. Some of the Nevada sites chosen include Cuprite and Goldfield, volcanic hosted acid sulfate systems; Yerington, a structurally complex porphyry copper deposit; and Virginia City, a Quartz- Sericite-Pyrite vein system with advanced argillic pods. Ground spectral data was collected with the PIMA-II spectrometer. Solar reflectance calibration was done by Desert Research Institute personnel at Virginia City and Cuprite. This paper will discuss the configuration of the sensor and present image and ground data for Goldfield and Virginia City.

The surface treatment works in the Mount Isa Mines Limited copper stream consist of a concentrator and smelter with annual capacities of 5.6 million tonnes of ore and production of 155 000 tonnes of anode copper respectively. Both plants have been sites for process optimisation in recent years, the emphasis being to achieve productivity gains in each particular plant. The continued low real world prices for copper resulted in an in-depth review of the entire copper process stream. This indicated the need for developments within both the concentrator and smelter, and changes to operating strategy to ensure that the entire treatment stream could be optimised. The paper reviews these changes.

Pyrite is one of the principal Au-bearing minerals in refractory gold ores. Significantly high Au concentrations of up to 5200 ppm are present in pyrite. Pyrite hosting high levels of Au is also enriched in As. Pyrite as an unwanted mineral ends up in wastes and constitutes one of the primary sources of As in the mining and metallurgical wastes. Arsenic can be readily released to the environment due to rapid oxidative dissolution of the host pyrite under atmospheric conditions. In order to determine the form and occurrence of arsenic in pyrite, micro-X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy (XAFS) spectra were collected from a range of arsenical pyrite grains having different morphologies and a range of arsenic and gold concentrations. All the pyrite grains are characterised by the dominant edge aligned with As-1 valence state. In pyrite, arsenic atoms substitute for S atoms that are in six-fold coordination about each Fe atom. XAFS data suggest that As atoms occur in clusters within the pyrite structure. In addition to As-1, fine-grained, inclusion-rich and framboidal-type pyrite grains have a second As species at ~11 875 eV corresponding to As5+. This As5+ species in pyrite is highly variable and attributed to the oxidation of arsenic exposed on the surfaces of pyrite.

As an environmental "pollutant", noise is different. For one thing, it is localised (as opposed to transfrontier) and, for another, relatively low levels can trigger very strong human reaction. The reactions, which are annoyance-based, range from mild to violent and do not always correlate well with the levels experienced. This paper draws on technical aspects of noise to consider control and control principles and balances them with the subjective nature of the perceptions and reactions. It is critical to bear in mind that health effects resulting from noise are secondary to the primary human reaction. It is also important to appreciate that annoying noise levels are usually well below those which cause hearing loss. Large mines tend to be remote from cities and towns and the country surrounding such mine sites is often inhospitable. In general, residences near large mines are committed for use by mine personnel and annoyance from mining noise would be rare. Noise problems at long term operations are often a result of secondary activity or land use. As a pioneer mining community develops, secondary and service industries may be established and a township created. With changes in way of life, the perception of problems also changes. Therefore, it is never too early to plan for noise abatement, particularly because noise is only one of a number of environmental and community concerns. Ihny environmental problems are associat- ed with development or expansion of smaller open cut facilities such as hardrock quarries. There is an ever-present need to reduce product cost by mining or quarrying deposits close to the end user and many local authorities have to operate quarries for undertaking their civil engineering responsibilities.

The reaction between lead sulphate and a number of base metal sulphides (galena, sphal- erite, chalcopyrite and synthetic pyrrhotite was studied as a means of desulphurizing lead sulphate containing fumes and residues to levels acceptable as ISF feed. The reactants were mixed with 50% zinc oxide to act as a "basket" to contain the molten products of the reaction and pressed into small briquettes 20 mm in diam. Factors such as temperature, time and the composition of the atmosphere were investigated. Using the PbS/PbS04 system as an example it was shown that the reaction became rapid above 800¦C and that both sulphur dioxide and oxygen in the atmosphere were detrimental to achieving low sulphur in the product. In an inert atmosphere all the sulphides when roasted for 1 h at 1000¦C gave results corresponding to the elimination of more than 95% of the sulphur in the reactants. Leach plant residues were considered for use as the "basket" material. It was shown that the residual sulphide and sulphate components of the residues underwent similar reactions to those experienced by the pure systems.

This paper will describe the exploration project which led to the discovery of the La Escondida porphyry copper deposit in northern Chile and will serve as companion paper to the description of the geology of Escondida being presented by J M Ojeda. The author would like to express his appreciation to Robert Hickman, Chairman of Minera Escondida, for permission to present this paper.In July 1978, a proposal was made by J D Lowell to Robert Wheaton, then Exploration Manager of Utah International, that Utah fund a "grass roots" program exploring for porphyry copper deposits in northern Chile. Wheaton expressed interest, and it was agreed that Getty Oil Co also be invited to participate. A joint venture agreement for the Atacama Exploration Project was signed January 1, 1979, between Utah, Getty and Lowell. The project was managed by Lowell who reported to a management committee which through most of the project consisted of Lowell, Francisco Ortiz, Robert Wheaton, Maurice Young, Sigfried Muessig and Louis Rove. Oliver Warin and Jim Bratt participated in the committee in the last phase of the contract. Special thanks are due Louis Rove of Getty and Maurice Young of Utah who made contributions throughout the course of the project. Francisco Ortiz was resident manager through most of the project.

Natural rocks are frequently exposed to groundwater and complex geological conditions. Environments with water presence are more susceptible to chemical corrosion, which notably affects rock’s micro properties. Generally, the pH of acid mine drainage in hard rock mines can be low to 5, and the pH of quarrying waste deposits can be below 3. With the expanding scope of mining engineering in aquifers and salty areas, chemical corrosion can also caused by different types and concentrations of anions. The anions can significantly affect rock’s mechanical properties. Therefore, it is critical to emphasise the impact of anion and acid on the mechanical and micro characteristics of rock. This paper commences with an introduction to representative corrosive environments. Then the UCS tests are conducted on granite samples corroded by chloride ions and sulfate ions. Anion has negative effects on the strength of granite. The reason is that certain minerals can react and be dissolved by anions and hydrogen ions, such as Al2O3. Furthermore, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) shows that the roughness of the fracture surface increases with the anion concentration. The effect of acid is notably more pronounced than anion on the micro properties of granite. The initiated fissures and pores also increase with the concentration of SO42- and Cl- ions, which is the micro explanation for the impact of anion on rock strength and stability. Subsequently, the permeability of the granite specimens is tested. The reason that granite performs insensitivity to acid and anion is attributed to its low permeability and high content of inactive oxides, such as quartz. To summarise, anionic and acidic conditions can slightly deteriorate the mechanical and micro properties of granite. While SO42- demonstrates a higher level of corrosiveness on granite than Cl-.

The Callie Underground Gold Mine (Callie) is owned by Newmont Asia Pacific and located 531 km north-west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Historically, stopes have been mined utilising a primary and secondary stoping sequence with cemented aggregate fill and rock fill respectively. Current and near-future mining will employ long hole open stoping with rib pillars and rock fill with a paste fill system approved to allow a higher extraction ratio from mid-2011. The Callie rock mass is of good quality with little or no mining difficulties during development and stoping to a depth of 1140 m below surface. Development is currently occurring at depth of 1360 m below surface. Stress damage previously observed only in secondary stope accesses is now observed in development unaffected by stoping stresses. A change in rock mass properties is being experienced with depth, with more pronounced and frequent joint planes. Also, other structures are intersected more commonly, such as lithological boundaries and fault zones. The 'Callie rock factory' mentality that has persisted for years is challenged. This paper covers an appraisal of the stress and ground condition changes at Callie. The appraisal outlines the mine design criterion that was developed and examines the transition from a low stress environment to one where stress damage is observed. Discussion includes a judgement on the rock mass damage observed in development, the dominant geotechnical factors influencing the change in ground conditions, and if a correlation can be made between the observed rock mass damage with stress through the use of numerical modelling.

The carbon solubility of the CaO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-MgO slag, the main system formed in the Ruhrstahl-Heraeus (RH) vacuum degasser, was measured at 1873 K to understand the effect of slag compositions on the carbon contamination in the ultra-low carbon (ULC) steels. The stable form of carbon was demonstrated to be carbonate by plotting the log [(wt%C)/aC] ratio against the log p(O2) which ranged -11 < log p(O2,atm) < -9. The carbon solubility of the CaO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-MgO slag can be estimated using thermodynamic model. The distribution ratio of carbon increased with increasing concentration of FeO due to the FeO reduction reaction and increased basicity of slag. The carbonate capacity of the CaO-Al2O3-FeO-SiO2-MgO slag can be expressed as a linear function of the activity of lime and the optical basicity.

As a project moves through the mine life cycle, the quantity of data available increases and the understanding of the orebody matures. Incorporating new information quickly and efficiently in current 3D models, is essential for adding value across the life-of-mine value chain. At the Martabe Gold Mine, the resource development group manages 14 drill rigs on six resource projects, including three operating mines. The Martabe deposits are geologically complex and the volume of new information that becomes available each day is substantial. It is imperative that new geological and assay information is integrated into the 3D models as soon as possible, so that drill planning and targeting can be modified accordingly. Martabe uses Leapfrog&lt;sup&gt;&#174;&lt;/sup&gt; 3D software to update and interrogate the 3D models on a dynamic basis as data becomes available. This results in faster and more effective changes to drill planning and schedules. The impact of this is better drill productivity and cost savings due to optimal drill targeting, and availability of up-to-date models incorporating the most current data.
