In Australian collieries, solutions to the outburst problem must be implemented in a highly competitive environment which has a low tolerance on negative productivity effects. Solutions are only applicable if the overall viability of the operation remains sound. Minimum time must be spent on alleviation and control measures. This is favoured by simple geology, advanced warning and efficient alleviation and control procedures. Research requirements in support of this include 1. an improved means of predicting the nature and location of outburst zones ahead of the face and, 2. an improved means of measuring the effectiveness of gas drainage. For additional safety at the face, a means of continuously monitoring outburst proneness is required. In general, greater emphasis is required on improved instrumentation.

Expert systems have been employed in a number of areas for a considerable number of years. However, the traditional long development times associated with these systems have restricted their application. With the advent of powerful Expert System Development Tools such as COMDALE/X and the use of efficient development techniques, the time required can be drastically reduced. This results in the availability and applicability of this technology to a wide range of applications. This paper discusses some of the 'rules' which indicate amenability (or otherwise) of a particular problem to an expert system solution. Various problem types are examined and these are illustrated with reference to examples of their use at various operating sites.

Bauxite residue is one of the most important by-products from the alumina industry with no commercial use till now. The utilisation of bauxite residue through pelletising with different lime additions, hydrogen reduction, and smelting has been studied in this work. Three different types of green pellets were made with varying calcite-to-bauxite residue ratio and subsequently sintered at elevated temperatures. The sintered pellets were isothermally reduced at 1000°C under hydrogen gas followed by smelting of the reduced pellets in argon at 1500°C. Smelting of the reduced pellets leads to the recovery of metallic iron and the formation of a leachable calcium aluminate slag. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to characterise the phases and microstructural analysis. The iron produced in the smelting process has a high purity, above 99.5 wt per cent. While the iron content of the slags is quite low, and the slags shows variations of krotite (CaAl2O4), gehlenite (Ca2Al2SiO7), and perovskite (CaTiO3) phases based on the variation of calcite addition. It was found that the more calcite addition in pelletising yields higher percentage of krotite phase as compared to lower calcite-containing pellets. Employing quantitative XRD analysis, the krotite phase fraction was found approximately 85 wt per cent for higher calcite-added pellet, and around 74 wt per cent for lower calcite-added pellet. International mineral disclosure standards and guidelines aligned with the CRIRSCO (Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards) template were developed to inform stakeholders about the relative accuracy and confidence levels of publicly reported information and to support investment decisions, particularly when advancing projects through different development stages. The traditional stages range from early to advanced exploration, through pre-development (with Mineral Resources and pre-feasibility and/or feasibility levels of study) before the final development stages, where a decision to proceed with construction or production (or both) is made. The traditional definition of Mineral Resource and Ore/Mineral Reserve classification categories and techno-economic study levels (including Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA), Scoping Study (SS), Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) and Feasibility Study (FS)) were defined with pre-development project assessment in mind. As such, these definitions are not necessarily well aligned to the reporting structures required by operating mines which need to consider a range of timelines spanning short to long-term operating conditions. However, the same terminology and definitions are used, or expected to be used, by both project developers and mine operators when reporting resources, reserves and techno-economic study outcomes. This paper discusses how various stakeholders in the minerals industry (including competent/qualified persons, mining company leaders, investors, lenders and regulators), generally interpret the definitions of Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve categories in terms of the relative accuracy of the estimates, their link to techno-economic study levels and their contribution to life-of-mine (LOM) schedules. The paper examines the degree to which mining companies recognise, and apply, enhanced operational knowledge to reflect short-term views of the relative accuracy and confidence levels associated with publicly reported Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates and forecasts. Furthermore, this paper explores how this knowledge is applied to support ongoing Mineral Resource, and particularly Ore Reserve, generation and reporting. This paper is informed by public data and responses to an internal survey prepared by the authors and completed in 2021 by several mining companies.

Pyritic black shales present several challenges to mining operations due to their reactivity. The risk of predetonation of explosives in blastholes, spontaneous combustion of fractured rock and the generation of acid rock drainage must be managed for safety, operational and environmental reasons. At the Mt Tom Price iron ore mine there is a need to differentiate between reactive and non-reactive shale in order to assess risk and make decisions on materials handling. The current approach uses a combination of stratigraphic information and sulfur analysis of blasthole samples. The time taken for sulfur analyses can be a constraining factor on mine production. A new instrument developed by ANSTO Minerals overcomes some of the current limitations on material characterisation. The IOR MeterÖ measures the intrinsic oxidation rate (IOR) of samples of broken rock by circulating air through a sample and monitoring the oxygen concentration over time. The intrinsic oxidation rate is given by the rate at which oxygen is consumed per unit mass of sample, in units of kg(oxygen) kg-1(sample) s-1. Up to eight samples can be measured simultaneously and the turn-around time can be less than 12 hours. Initial trials of the IOR MeterÖ were undertaken at the Mt Tom Price mine in July 2004. The measured IOR of samples from a blasthole pattern spanning different geological layers containing black shale, correlated strongly with the expected reactivity of those layers. The correlation between position in the geological sequence (detailed stratigraphy) and IOR MeterÖ results were much stronger than that between stratigraphy and sulfur content. The new characterisation technique offers the prospect of improving the ability to identify and predict the behaviour of reactive black shales and to differentiate more precisely between different materials. Mine planning, operations, safety and environment all stand to benefit from the success of further trials of the technique.

The use of scrapers in mining and earthmoving operations is not new; in fact they are one of the earliest methods of bulk earthmoving. A single machine, which can load, haul, and dump material with a minimum of ancillary support is a highly productive and cost-efficient method of earthmoving. In recent times scrapers have been unpopular due to perceived problems and operational limitations, but the last couple of years have seen a resurgence in the use of scrapers in the Bowen Basin as a primary prestripping tool. The main operational limitation of scrapers is the economic operating range. Maximum productivity and lowest cost per bcm is achieved on short leads, as the lead distance increases the cost per bcm quickly reaches and then overtakes that of an truck-excavator fleet. The geometry of a ætraditionalÆ coal mine does not readily allow short leads for prestrip fleets due to the nature of dragline stripping operations. The strip arrangement means that material has to be taken around the end of the pit, meaning a longer haul distance than the actual point-to-point distance between load and dump. This can be alleviated by using pit bridges, however these can cause spoil problems for draglines if not properly planned and have been avoided by many mines. Due to the economic haul distance limitation of scrapers, truck-excavator fleets have become the normal method utilised. Currently more geologically complex mines are opening up, which do not allow traditional down-dip strip mining to occur. Cross-dip mining methods allow for short leads between prestrip loading and dumping areas, hence scrapers and bulk doze are realistic alternatives to a truck-excavator fleet in the prestrip environment. Keeping the lead distance to a minimum a fleet of 657Æs can move material at a very low cost. The other main operational limitation of scrapers is the type of material that can be economically excavated. Hard material can lead to damage to the bowl, free-flowing sand will not readily stay in the bowl leading to reduced load factors. Ripping the material with a dozer prior to excavating can lead to improved loading time, and greatly reduced GET consumption. When considering scrapers for prestrip operations a number of things must be considered: is the lead distance within the economic haul distance? should twin power (push-pull) or single power (dozer pushed) scrapers be used? do I need to rip, what should I rip with? what ancillary support is required? is there another system already available on-site which is currently under utilised? This paper considers the parameters under which large twin power scrapers are the most effective way of undertaking prestrip operations.

Inclined troughed belt conveyors are more frequently being selected from a range of alternatives, which include shafts and trucks for ore haulage in underground mass mining projects. Belt conveyor haulage systems are being operated with lifts exceeding those normally associated with truck haulage systems and approaching the limits of shaft haulage systems. A belt conveyor haulage system, in this context, incorporates subsystems for: crushing,tramp detection and removal, andhaulage. This paper presents details of recent inclined troughed belt conveyor systems for underground mining operations, and explores the application of inclined troughed belt conveyors for the increasing demands of future underground mass mining projects.

Rio Tinto has actively committed to progressive reclamation, concurrent with commercial operations, at its Diavik Diamond Mine. The most significant piece of progressive reclamation undertaken at Diavik to date has been the construction of an engineered thermal rock cover for the mine’s largest waste rock storage area. This 80-metre-tall and 2000-metre-long area is known as the Waste Rock Storage Area – North Country Rock Pile (WRSA-NCRP) and contains the operationally segregated potentially acid-generating waste rock mined over the last 20 years. As part of the mine plan, an opportunity was recognised where a limited 1.5 per cent of the WRSANCRP surface area was required for storage of the balance of life-of-mine generated waste rock and a decision was made to advance the closure design almost a decade ahead of final closure. With over 12 860 000 tonnes of material placed and 57 443 dozer hours logged since cover construction, progressive reclamation on the WRSA-NCRP is scheduled to be complete in mid-2023, three years before planned cessation of commercial operations in 2026. The progressive closure of the WRSA-NCRP demonstrates Rio Tinto’s commitment to not only closure, but modern best practices with integrated mine closure. Over the past seven years, Diavik has overcome multiple implementation hurdles for this project including the psychology of operational standby, the financial mechanisms required to support closure, working within the constraints of a mine plan and the associated operational organisational structures. This paper outlines the lessons learned to provide an example of successful integrated mine planning for closure. The North Country Rock Pile project had three major learnings which resulted in an effective organisational structure that allowed for the execution of an integrated planning model for progressive closure. The initial hurdle the project faced was adapting the psychology of an operational open pit mining team. The team was an experienced mining group who came in with the perspective to target the shortest haul possible resulting in the initial perception that the longer haul of material to the NCRP was an un-necessary task impacting operational performance metrics. After the installation of an improved dispatch tracking system and performance metrics, it was possible to demonstrate that the mine was shovel constrained. This showcased the short haul was generating an increase in queue time not production. With updated performance metrics, the team was aligned to target a decrease standby through haulage to the NCRP. These performance metrics had to be reinforced by financial mechanisms. The operations team was able to offset costs by charging time to the capital project set-up for the closure of the NCRP. This allowed the operations team to receive credit for time that would have otherwise likely been standby. As well, the progressive closure project was able to receive the benefit of not having to incur costs for the drill, blast and load as that was done as part of the operation. This was a significant benefit to the project and one of the primary drivers for the early approvals of the work as the project costs were limited to the incremental haulage distance and placement of the material. Life of Mine Conference 2023 | Brisbane, Australia | 2–4 August 2023 114 While the combined operational and progressive closure approach provided financial advantages, it did result in the project being constrained by the operational activities. A traditional capital project is managed through a linear execution plan where the deliverables within a project are within the realm of control of the project execution team. However, the NCRP project had to be continuously adapted to the outcomes of the pit operations. This included geotechnical constraints, ore delivery, and other operational delays. To adapt, the planning module had to be dynamic but not reactive to allow for adjustments on a shift-by-shift basis. Based on this requirement the Diavik Closure Projects structure adopted a mine planning format. The team executed a similar planning timeline and reporting structure as the mine operations team, allowing planning to be integrated into the operational planning structures on a daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly basis. This resulted in the Projects team as a core pillar of the mine planning team. The process of continuous improvement spanned six years and has resulted in the project being ahead of schedule and under budget for the project’s scheduled progressive closure completion date of June 2023. The North Country Rock Pile project supports the argument that bulk earthworks progressive closure projects should be integrated into the operational mine plan. If the project is aligned the mine plan it allows for dynamic adjustments which capitalise on evolving opportunities inevitable in an operating mine. These cultural and organisational alignments should be supported by appropriate performance metrics and financial mechanisms to ensure united priorities. The result of this alignment provides long-term financial savings for the business as well as delivery of closure objectives.

Mining organisations grapple with the same problems year after year, wasting incredible amounts of time and money. According to estimates from the International Labour Organization (ILO), over one million work-related deaths occur annually, and hundreds of millions of workers suffer from workplace accidents and occupational exposure to hazardous substances worldwide. Many accident reports cite human failure as a primary cause (Busse and Johnson, 1998). The workers at the Bhopal chemical plant pumped methyl isocyanate into a leaking tank (Morehouse and Subramaniam, 1986). On 3 December 1984, more than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, immediately killing at least 3800 people and causing significant morbidity and premature death for many thousands more. The company involved in what became the worst industrial accident in history immediately tried to dissociate itself from legal responsibility (Broughton, 2005). Australia is not spared from safety problems either (Lucas, 2022). The ILO Convention 176 (1995) as a response provides that national law should inter alia provide for the supervision of safety and health in mines; the inspection of mines by designated inspectors of the competent authority; the procedures for reporting and investigating of fatal and serious accidents; the compilation and publication of statistics on accidents, occupational diseases and dangerous occurrences; the competent authority to suspend or restrict mining activities on safety and health grounds until conditions giving rise to the suspension are addressed; and worker consultation on matters related to safety and health in mines. This has assisted in getting enough data to define the magnitude of the problem to the mining sector.

On account of the increased work required from the assay office, owing to the large additions which have been made to the smelting and superphosphate plants during the last few years, it was found necessary to build a more extensive and up-to-date assay office than the one that had been in use since the starting of the works some twenty years back.A site was chosen adjacent to the main office, so as to be free from smoke and dust.. The building is constructed of red brick, the over-all dimensions being 109 ft. x 37 ft. The roof is of fibrous-cement slates, 31 ft. high, with a two-to-one rise, and overlaps the walls to the extent of 4 ft. 6 in. on all sides.Special care was taken to give light to all working benches, fume cupboards, and balance rooms. The main chemical room occupies the entire western end of the building, and the fire room the entire eastem end. Between these two rooms are the superphosphate, refinery, and gold-parting rooms on one side of the central passage, and three balance rooms, general office, and cloak room on the other side. The height of the roof affords ample space above these central rooms for storage purposes, and also maintains a fairly even temperature. The ceiling of the main chemical and fire rooms is carried immediately under the slates, which gives a total height in the centre of about 25 ft.

The role of the virgin in situ stress field in tunnelling projects is well known in the Sydney area. The effect of in situ stresses is mostly considered through the use of published relationships that describe the in situ stress conditions as a function of depth. Considering the significant scatter in the data, it is evident that by adopting such relationships, the designers are assuming an average distribution of stresses with depth that is generally a reasonable engineering approach; however, when building a geomechanical model, the tunnelling or geotechnical engineer needs to account for the interrelationship between ground conditions (rock mass quality – fracturing, strength and stiffness) and in situ stress, which may explain part of the stress data scatter. This paper presents an alternative approach for interpreting in situ stress conditions, valid for both Sydney sandstones and shales that focus on such interrelationship between in situ stress and ground conditions.CITATION:Oliveira, D A F and Parker, C J, 2014. The aim of this paper is to present a concept or model regarding a particular geological environment where gold orebodies occur in the Pine Creek Geosyncline and indeed in many other pans of the world. The name GIGIACS (an acronym for Gold In Greywacke In Anticlinal CrestS) is proposed to label this concept or model. The name Saddle Reefs (which has been in use for many years) is used for gold-bearing quartz veins which often occur in conjunction with Gigiacs. Simple patterns formed by this type of mineralisation at the surface due to different configurations are illustrated. Some examples of Gigiacs and associated saddle reefs are presented from the Pine Creek Geosyncline together with examples from other parts of the world. This concept has been used successfully as an exploration tool and five examples are given. The terms Gicsiacs (for Gold In Carbonaceous Shale In Anticlinal CrestS) and Giliacs (for Gold In Limestone In Anticlinal CrestS) are also used.

Ion exchange using strong base resins is a well established technology for the recovery and purification of uranium from sulfuric acid leach liquors. Production of uranium at the Beverley Mine in South Australia includes acidic in situ leaching, ion exchange and uranium precipitation. The salinity present in the groundwater results in a relatively high concentration of chloride in the leach liquor reporting to the ion exchange plant. The impact of chloride on the ion exchange process is discussed in this paper. The results presented show that an increased chloride concentration in the lixiviant solution feeding the ion exchange plant leads to increased uptake of chloride by the resin during the loading cycle. At the highest chloride concentration studied (7.5 g/L Cl) chloride took up to 60 per cent of the resin loading sites. The impact of the chloride can be summarised as follows: for a given uranium concentration in the lixiviant feed solution, the uranium loading decreased with increasing chloride concentration; a consequence of decreased uranium loading is an increase in the frequency of elution, with an associated increase in elution reagent costs; and for a given elution efficiency, the uranium concentration in the barrens is expected to increase with increasing chloride concentration.A few options were examined to counteract the impact of chloride: an increase in elution efficiency was targeted to reduce the amount of uranium returning to the loading circuit; increasing the pH improved uranium loading, but this was found to also increase iron extraction; and preliminary screening of alternative resins showed that the higher the theoretical ion exchange capacity of the strong base resin, the higher the uranium loading.Work is continuing on uranium recovery from saline leach liquors, specifically investigating the performance of alternative resins.

The increasing problems associated with the disposal of waste and the potential for use of by-products as underground filling material is a subject which is relevant not only to the coal-mining industry. The progressive scarcity of surface disposal facilities for by-products and waste has now become a problem in all sectors - not only for the mining industry. The considerable capacity offered by underground cavities which exists in various mining branches present an extremely promising potential in this context. The backfill process for coal mining developed by DMT in co-operation with Ruhrkohle AG make use of the cavities which are offered by the extraction of coal. It consists of several stages: The fine-grained by-products, such as sludge, filter cakes, fine refuse, ash and flue-gas cleaning residues are processed on the basis of specified formulations in metering, blending and pump facilities on the surface to produce pumpable pastes with precisely defined flow characteristics. On Walsum Colliery of Ruhrkohle AG up to 200 m3/h stowing paste is conveyed into the mine in pipes with diameter of 200 mm (8"). The delivery pressure of the pump operating on surface in conjunction with the hydrostatic pressure of the shaft pipe - amounting in total to as much as 25 MPa - makes it possible to convey the stowing material for a distance 12000 m underground up to the workings without any need for additional booster pumps. Via a pipe installed in the face, the paste is pressurised into the cavities in the specially fragmented rock in the mined-out zone well behind the support. Consistent use of stowage of caved-in goafs makes it possible to reduce surface settlement above the workings. Fires in the stowed rock are either smothered or completely prevented thanks to the exceptional air-tightness in the caved goaf and the cooling effects of the slurry stowage. The reduced danger of fire, the preventation of air-leakage and the positive effects on gas emission from the coal improve safety in the workings.

"The mining industry is often challenged with the task of evaluating narrow vein open pit deposits. A realistic mineable solution from optimisation needs to accurately represent mining dilution and the practical limitations of mining equipment. Open pit dilution is driven according to mining method and fleet selection as this dictates the ‘selective mining unit’ (SMU) that can be practicably mined.Common evaluation methods represent dilution by:a mathematical dilution assumption addition of a dilution skin reblocking of the model to an appropriate SMU.This paper will explore an alternative method of applying dilution by adapting an underground stope modelling tool. By considering an SMU as a stope, automatic stope shape creators such as Datamine’s Mineable Shape Optimiser (MSO) can be used to create wireframes for each mining unit over the entire deposit. Using these wireframes, the model can be subblocked and assigned as either ore (inside the wireframe) or waste (outside the wireframe) prior to optimisation.The MSO process considers SMU geometry and a depth specific value-based cut-off. The result is an optimised solution for the deposit based on practical and achievable mining constraints rather than one based on generalised modifying factors.To evaluate the economic impact of the methods above, results have been costed and scheduled and a comparison of operating cash flows made.Citation:Swapp, S and Mann, C, 2016. The last 20 years have seen a dramatic rise in the use of 3D visualisation and modelling for geological data, but there has been relatively little effort to do the same for the variogram models that underpin the standard estimation algorithms used by the mining industry.For kriging, one of the most used geostatistical estimation methods, specifying a variogram model is a critical part of the modelling process. Experimental variography is the primary method for approximating the theoretical variogram function from the available sample data, and then determining an appropriate variogram model from the approximations.The traditional tools used for experimental variography are limited to looking at subsets of the data and are often presented without reference to geographic space and geology. It can be difficult to know what input data is being used for a particular experimental variogram, and whether there is enough support in the experimental variograms to propose an appropriate model.To overcome these limitations, an innovative approach called situational variography has been proposed that visualises variograms in 3D alongside contextual geological and geometric data. Presenting variograms in this manner aids understanding of how the spatial variance relates to the underlying data.A 3D extension of the 2D radial variogram maps will be investigated which allows for dynamic exploration of the full experimental variogram cloud. At the operation of mine winders in deep shafts considerable oscillations of winding ropes may occur due to elasticity of both wind-ing and balance ropes. The amplitudes of longitudinal oscillations may reach + lm at relatively low frequencies, ranging from 0.5 to 2 c/s. These oscillations may be dangereus for the rope and produce several hazards to the winding installation as a whole. They may cause conside-rable instant accelerations on the pulley and dangerous tensions in ro-pe wires. The excessive acceleration may cause the uncontrolled rope slip on the pulley. Several methods of limitation of these accelera-tions were developed, some of them have been already in control system: of electric drive of the winder. The most simple ones are: a/ limita-tion of the rate of change of acceleration and retardation of the win-der /so called "jerk"/ and b/ the proper selection of regulators of the winder control system to get the optimal control. The trouble in solv-ing the problem of rope oscillations is that the dynamic system of the winder is a nonstationaryone owing to changing distance of conveyance from the pulley. Besides, the system is described by the equations with distributed parameters. The brief discussion of the theory and its practical aspects are enclosed as well.

In panel/block caving mines, large amounts of information are collected at the operations. This information includes grades and extracted tonnage, fragmentation, lithology, design of stopes and main infrastructure, geotechnical information, overbreak progress, seismicity, numerical modelling and many other mine variables. To improve the reliability of the production plan it is required to integrate the mine data into one platform. In this paper, the logic of a new technological platform is presented for analysis, modelling and design in panel/block caving mines. The platform includes an acquisition system for mine data and geotechnical information, a back-analysis module for calibrating statistical models and a module of visualisation of the results. The application and benefits of the platform is illustrated for mining induced seismic risk for panel/block caving mining operation. The authors have succeeded in providing additional rigour and clarity to the formulation and execution of the dynamic programming algorithm for optimum open pit limit determination. The inclusion of the blocks on the J + 1 column in the search for Pmax, and constraining this search with blocks assigned a value of negative infinity, ensures an optimal solution within the defmed blocks. The effect of the negative infmity blocks is to preclude mining along the diagonal blocks from the first row that they occur in. Figure 1 graphically illustrates the effects of this on the calculation of P. A practical application for constraining mining with negative infmity blocks is the case where the pit outline is defined by lease boundaries and not by the value of blocks to be removed. Any legal, social or physical constraint could be accounted for in the same way.The danger in applying this technique is that the negative infinity blocks will override any other more profitable solutions that may exist. This is in fact what has happened in the example that the authors use. If a further column is added to the left hand side (column -1) and the calculation is carried out again, a more optimal x-section can be found. (If the negative infinity values are removed the same result is obtained.) This gives a pit value of 112 as against the 108 of the authors' optimal pit. This calculation is shown in Figure 2. Lerchs-Grossman optimization is reliable only if there are sufficient columns available to allow "mining" to optimum depth of the ore body and still allow the pit to break out at the surface within the confines of the columns.This author's approach is to create enough columns each side of the lateral limits of the ore to allow the pit to intersect the surface while still within the confines of the block model. Implementing the methods discussed by the authors helps to reduce the number of columns required to achieve this.

"The development of a predictive geometallurgical model is a multidisciplinary and iterative task that involves both discovery and integration aspects. In this paper, the authors discuss the concepts of geometallurgical modelling in terms of the underlying relationships that are used to connect geology, metallurgy and economic value, and how the early-stage preparation of a spatial geometallurgical model enhances project value and provides a sound basis for future studies and test work programs.Hot Chili’s (copper-gold-molybdenum) Productora Project, which is located in northern Chile, is a porphyry-copper style deposit that can be exploited using open pit mining and preparation of a saleable concentrate from fresh ore, as well as heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW) extraction of copper from oxide ores. To enhance project value in the Productora prefeasibility study (PFS), Hot Chili developed a geometallurgical model that was used to predict the process responses of both sulfide and oxide ores. The Productora model incorporates test results from mineralogical, metallurgical and comminution testing, as well as other studies completed on a suite of samples collected from the many geological domains of the deposit.Using Bond Work Index and Abrasion Index proxies in the geometallurgical model, Hot Chili estimated the variability of sulfide ore throughput and comminution costs. Heap leach acid consumption in oxide ore was estimated from drill hole calcium concentrations. The model was then used in mine scheduling to identify high and low throughput or high and low acid ore zones so that the processing of these zones could be advanced or deferred to improve net present value (NPV).
