The experiments described in this paper were carried out as a preliminary to a comprehensive study of the factors which affect the behaviour of lead during and subsequent to deformation by rolling and pressing. These observations are therefore to be considered as introductory to a further paper dealing more specifically with the above-mentioned variables.EXPERIMENTALThe rolling was carried out in a small mill with six-inch diameter surface ground rolls, both of which were electrically driven at 15 r.p.m. The average draft per pass approximated 0·03 in. The pressing was performed between platens in the compression unit of a 30-ton Amsler machine. The flat faces used had a ground finish comparable with the surface of the rolls. All hardness measurements were made with a Herbert "dead load" Brinell machine. The following te'sting conditions were maintained: ball diameter-5 mm.; load-10 kgms.; duration of loading-30 seconds; temperature of testing-16 to 18°C. A company tax rate based on profitability return, or as more commonly expressed, a resource rent taxation scheme has been intro- duced at various stages in the past by both Australian state and commonwealth governments. At present a number of overseas countries are applying this form of legislation to the taxing of sections of their mining industries. Within this study, ways in which this type of tax has been used are examined. The form in which the tax can be applied varies. 1. It can be selectively or universally applied. 2. The base on which economic return is calculated can be selected in a number of ways. 3. It can start operating only when high profit levels exist, or alternatively be the basis of a total taxation scheme. The implication for the Australian mining industry of the introduction of different types of resource rent taxation schemes is assessed within the context of previously enacted systems.

The four-dimensional (4D) network relaxation method, originally developed by Akaike in 1999, uses Lagrange relaxation and is known for its ability to include the price change and possible better outputs, but the computation time is huge. However, the continuous advancement in computer technologies allows the use of higher-speed computers with more memory capacity. Therefore, in this paper the authors have tried to implement the method with adjustments and improvements in its algorithm to suit the current computing system. As a result, the computation time has been drastically reduced and more constraints can be included, which makes the scheduling a more realistic one. The case study of an open pit gold mine with 129 500 blocks can be solved considering the capacity constraints in 71 seconds. In previous case studies, the mined ore had to be processed or disposed of immediately. Now, stockpiling can be included as another option. Since the details of the algorithm are still being improved, the computation time is a little longer than the previous cases without the stockpiling option. However, it is found that scheduling with the stockpiling option is possible in a reasonable time. In conclusion, the 4D network relaxation method has become more useful with advances in computer technologies and provides better results.

Early in 1930 William S. Robinson, Managing Director of Zinc Corporation Ltd., anticipated a rise in the price of gold and a devaluation of the Australian currency. 'WS', as Robinson was known, formed a.syndicate in London, which later became incor- porated as Gold Mines of Australia Limited (GMA) to invest in gold mining properties in Australia. GMA examined many prospects and subsequently undertook the development of several mines in eastern Australia. The syndicate also held a number of options and several large reservations for gold exploration in Western Australia over which it was proposed to carry out an aerial survey and thorough scien- tific assessment. To do this Western Mining Corporation Limited (WMC) was incorporated in Melbourne on the 2nd March 1933. The founding chairman of WMC and GMA was the highly respected `Collins House' figure, Sir Colin Fraser. The aerial survey was carried out, and a group of eminent geol- ogists from Harvard University examined many prospects and identified several which warranted development. To finance these activities `WS' formed Gold Exploration and Finance Co. of Aus- tralia Ltd. (GEFCA), in London in July 1934. GEFCA ultimately held 95% of WMC and 62% of GMA. The finance came mostly from London based South African mining companies which had been subscribers to his earlier syndicate plus some American inves- tors. The hot-dip galvanising industry is the largest consumer of zinc, with over 40 per cent of the world’s total annual production of zinc used for galvanised steel. The dross generated in the hot-dip galvanising coating process is a valuable co-product, since it contains high quantities of recyclable metal. A new method to recover the metal from the industrial galvanising dross was proposed using supergravity separation. During the hot-dip galvanising process, the presence of zinc dross has a serious impact on the surface quality of the hot-dip galvanised sheet, forming zinc dross defects. To reduce the impact of zinc dross, the zinc dross on the surface of the zinc pool needs to be manually or mechanically removed at regular intervals. However, during the dross removal process, a large amount of metal zinc is inevitably carried out, resulting in low zinc utilisation rate and high zinc loss rate. This article proposes an efficient and low-cost technology for the recycling and utilisation of hotdip galvanised dross, which uses super-gravity technology to recover hot-dip galvanised dross online. The metal in the hot-dip galvanised dross returns to the zinc pot in situ, while a small part of the dross remains in the super-gravity equipment, which can reduce the amount of zinc dross by more than 60 per cent and achieve a reduction in zinc loss from 17 per cent to less than 7 per cent.

The northeast-southwest trending ~25 km2 area incorporating Bald Hill is located 18 km northeast of Haast, and 5 - 7 km west of the Alpine Fault in South Westland, New Zealand. The geology consists of Greenland Group greywacke overlain by a Cretaceous-Tertiary sedimentary sequence and fluvio-glacial/marine terrace deposits of Quaternary age. Alluvial gold in Cole Creek, draining west from the summit of Bald Hill, may be derived either from vein mineralisation in basement rocks or from fluvial or marine terraces.   This paper focuses on the potential for in situ gold and base-metal mineralisation in sporadic, siderite-rich quartz veins that cut basement greenschist facies metasediments that have been overprinted by contact metamorphism.   Throughout the area, vein compositions are dominated by quartz and commonly feature zoned plagioclase. Alteration adjacent to veining within the contact aureole is dominated by 1 - 2 mm, coarse grained biotite, with small amounts of sulphide, and is pervaded by abundant siderite veinlets. Outside the aureole, wall rock alteration to veins consists of fine grained chlorite. Trace element XRF analysis has been used to ascertain base metal concentrations within samples of vein and alteration zones collected from throughout the area. Vein and alteration zone mineral assemblages containing <5 per cent sulphide, with low concentrations of As, Cu, Pb and Zn indicate low potential for gold and base-metal mineralisation in the Bald Hill region. Contact metamorphism of Greenland Group basement in the northeast of the region, is likely due to emplacement of a poorly exposed Cr- and Ni- enriched gabbro. The presence of biotite and andalusite in hornfelses indicate contact metamorphism occurred at temperatures >350¦C and at depths <10 km. Widespread vein distribution does not appear to be related to contact metamorphism or gabbro emplacement. Further research is required in order to establish the fluid source from which the veins were precipitated.

The soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) is one of the most essential soil properties in unsaturated soil mechanics. The water flow and storage characteristics of an unsaturated soil are closely related to the amount of water contained in the pores and the negative pore-water pressure in the soil. These are both in turn, related to the particle-size distribution and the plasticity of the soil. The SWCC is obtained by laboratory testing which is difficult to perform, costly and time consuming. There is a significant advantage in establishing typical SWCC envelopes for different soil types from a geotechnical design and analysis viewpoint. This paper presents some of the research work undertaken by UWA and NTU to develop SWCC envelopes for soil types classified in terms of the ASTM D2487 Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). This was done by establishing a large database of soils from across the world, classifying them according to ASTM D2487 and undertaking SWCC testing for each soil. The first geological maps of parts of Australia were produced in the 1830s and 1840s, many being for purely practical purposes, such as indicating the occurrence of coal, iron and other essential materials. Mineral location maps were also first made about the same time.More systematic geological mapping commenced in the 1850s when large parts of New South Wales and Victoria were studied in government-sponsored surveys by geologists such as Samuel Stutchbury, Alfred Selwyn and Reverend William B. Clarke. Their work coincided with the opening up of most of the major goldfields of eastern Australia, which led to the establishment of Departments of Mines in the separate Colonies (later States within the Commonwealth of Australia).A few companies employed consultant geologists at this time, and the mapping by Frederick Odernheimer is particularly notable. Geological study of Australian ore-deposits and mineralisedareas was influenced by the continental European geological ideas of men such as Odernheimer as well as by those from England. Both geological and mineral maps were a feature of Colonialdisplays presented at major international exhibitions during the second half of the nineteenth century. The maps accompanied rock and mineral collections which showed the known and potential mineral wealth of the Colonies. Such displays raised interest in the potential for development amongst government officials, entrepreneurs and investors in Australia and abroad.By the 1880s most of the Colonies had produced basic geological maps, and several maps of the whole continent had been published. Although systematic mapping of the continent become a reality only in the 1950s, the nineteenth century geological and mineral mapping formed the basis for the development of the major coal, artesian water, and metalliferous mining regions of Australia.

The production scheduling of an open pit mine determines the optimal extraction sequencing that significantly impacts a mine’s life as well as net present value. The optimisation of production scheduling of large open pit mines with geological uncertainty is a computationally very intensive process. In this paper, an approximation algorithm is proposed to schedule an open pit mine, where instead of solving the whole problem at once, the production schedule is generated by sequentially solving subproblems. The subgradient method is used to generate the upper bound solution of the Lagrangian relaxed subproblem. If the upper bound relaxed algorithm is not a feasible solution, a mixed integer programming is solved on the generated upper-bound solution. An application at a copper mine with an orebody represented by 16 532 mining blocks is presented using the proposed algorithm. Results show that all constraints are satisfied. The net present values are also calculated and results reveal an 11 per cent higher net present value (NPV) is generated when compared to the NPV generated when the same approach is applied to the deterministic model of the deposit where uncertainty is not accounted for.CITATION:Chatterjee, S, 2014. The definition of the working sections that will be used in a mine is usually initially made in the field by the geologist supervising the drilling program. These initial definitions are often made on the basis of rules of thumb such as æcoal less than 30 cm thick cannot be mined separatelyÆ; æpartings more than 30 cm thick will be mined separatelyÆ; and æif a coal seam is less than 50 cm thick and the parting above or below is thicker than the coal, the coal will be wastedÆ. These decisions are also often made based on the requirement for a minimum sample mass for analysis, and the desire to collect data at the minimum resolution to conserve the exploration budget.In many cases the geological models based on this data are produced at a resolution that is inadequate to allow the mining engineer to produce a mine plan that will maximise project value. This problem is generally unrecognised.Where data is collected to a higher level of resolution the subsequent processes employed in the production of geological models and mine plans often discards the inherent value that is hidden in this data. Again this problem is generally unrecognised.This paper highlights this problem and then presents a methodology that ensures that the optimal working section is selected and compares the outcomes of applying this methodology versus adherence to the usual rules of thumb.

As open pit mining of a deposit deepens, the cost of extraction may increase up to a threshold where transitioning to mining through underground methods is more profitable. This paper provides an approach to identifying an optimal depth at which a mine should transition from open pit to underground mining. The value of a set of candidate transition depths is investigated by optimising the production schedules for each depth’s unique open pit and underground operations. By considering the sum of the open pit and underground mining portions’ value along with the cost of transitioning corresponding to each candidate transition depth, the optimal transition depth can be identified. The optimisation model presented is based on a stochastic integer program that integrates geological uncertainty. As an input, the stochastic integer program utilises a set of several stochastic simulations that represent equally probable scenarios of the mineral resource. This group of simulations describes the uncertainty in the deposit, while the optimiser aims to maximise value based on discounted profits of both the open pit and underground components of the deposit.CITATION:MacNeil, J and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. Portable crushing at Duval Corporation's Sierrita open pit mine has proven both the economics and operability of large, hardrock, portable systems. In-house expertise was utilized to create a system incorporating both operational and maintenance features requested by operating personnel. The monitor/control system involves over 400 channels of information and is based on a DEC 1SI 11/2 microprocessor communicating with seven microprocessor-based data acquisition systems over a 4-wire, multidrop link. The year and one-half successful operation affirms the design philosophy and the hardware/software implementation.

The biohydrometallurgy of gold is based on different processes which could be grouped into four main groups (Attia, Litchfield and Vaaler, 1985; Karavaiko et al, 1988; Groudev, 1990): 1. bacterial oxidation of gold-bearing sulphide minerals by chemolithotrophic bacteria to facilitate the subsequent chemical extraction of gold; 2. solubilisation of gold from oxide ores by means of heterotrophic bacteria; 3. recovery of gold from solutions by biosorption; and 4. microbial modifications of the surface of gold-bearing sulphide minerals to improve the subsequent gold concentration by physical dressing methods (eg flotation, oil agglomeration).

Following a period or small-scale activity a joint venture was formed between Ceramco Limited of New Zealand and Georgia Kaolin Company of USA. The initial concept was to process clays for the paper industry but it soon, became apparent that insufficient markets were attainable for the grades of china clay that could be produced for an economic unit. Ceramco Limited acquired the Georgia Kaolin interest in 1975 and proceeded to search for a market, of markets, that would: 1. utilise the unique properties of the product, and 2. enable a viable operation to be created. This paper describes the mineral deposits, the process, the properties of the product, and the marketing methods of New Zealand China Clays.

As a result of the explosion in the 512 panel at the Moura No 2 mine in 1994 the role of the ventilation officer (VO) to submit sealing plans (on behalf of the operator/underground mine manager) has become one of the key duties of the VO of an underground coal mine in Australia. The intent of a sealing plan is to document the controls used to manage the build up of flammable concentrations of gases, and for these controls to be reviewed by the industry regulators. These sealing plans have brought a large amount of focus onto the sealing process and served the industry well. The legislation does not define sealing, or when it begins, but throughout the industry typically sealing plans are submitted 30 days prior to the last seal being constructed. This practice appears to have originated from the Moura 512 panel being a standing bord and pillar panel and where the explosive gas mixture could only occur after it was sealed. However, since the Moura disaster the industry has become dominated by goafing style longwall mining. Goafing panels differ from standing bord and pillar panels in that they typically have an unventilated goaf that can potentially contain an explosive mixture from start-up. This was recently highlighted by the explosion and fire on Longwall No 1 Tailgate at the Blakefield South Mine in 2011. The author ponders whether the industry should revisit sealing plans to focus on the core hazard and define that sealing begins when flammable concentrations of gases are created. Although defining when mine sealing begins is the key outcome of this paper, the main point is that VOs and industry regulators need to clearly understand what can occur in the atmosphere of underground coal mines. The Mount Leyshon breccia complex is located on an east-west trending contact between Cambrian metasediments (Puddler Creek Formation) and the Ordovician Mt. Leyshon granite, within the Lolworth-Ravenswood block. Detailed mapping of basement, breccia and igneous unit geometries, crosscutting relationships and resolution of complex chronological relation- ships indicates that the Mt. Leyshon breccia complex should be reinterpreted as a number of intrusive igneous and breccia phases. This is in contrast to a previously published account of a largely extrusive geological setting. A complex structural history dominated by strike-slip faulting is preserved within the basement units and is responsible for controlling the location and geometry of the breccia complex. The breccia complex has been divided into brecciated "basement", "main pipe breccia" and an "interactive magma/breccia sequence". Main pipe breccia (the most voluminous unit within the complex) has been re-interpreted as an intrusive breccia, rather than an extrusive or vent fill as previously proposed. This is based on the following evidence: 1. the facies characteristics of the main pipe breccia, 2. the presence of a progression from cohesive basement through to mixed breccia, 3. minor basement block rotation during breccia complex formation, and 4. the partial structural control on the main pipe breccia. No unambiguous evidence exists for pyroclastic facies, although the fine breccia variant commonly contains "accretionary structures", very similar in appearance to those formed during pyroclastic processes. In view of 1. above, they are interpreted to be the product of particle accretion during upward movement of fragmental material, although an origin due to altera- tion cannot be completely discounted. heir occurrence in the main pipe breccia indicates that their presence within a rock unit is not necessarily diagnostic of nvroclastic nroeesses.

In mid-1998 Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB introduced the first member of a new family of drill rigs. This new family, Rocket Boomer L1C/L2C/L3C, is based on modern computer technology and also on what is characterised as information technology. The design of the drill rigs are modularised both in hardware as in the software. This means that the functionality of the drill rigs is upgradable step by step. Added upon the basic drill rig functions are the new options as ABC Regular (known also as Contour Control), ABC Total, drillplan generator and communication products. The main objectives of these functions are to facilitate real quality drilling.

The broad biodiversity of our country is manifested through several different biological forms. From the villages of Portovelo and San Gerardo in the southern part of Ecuador, some samples of water and rocks were taken in order to identify the native micro-organisms which take part in the natural processes of leaching of sulfurous minerals. The presence of Spp Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was determined together with a fungi sample which has not yet been characterised by the current workers. These have been isolated, grown, experimented and conserved in appropriate cryogenic environments. The present research intends to study the individual and group adaptation of the bacteria and the fungi upon suitable systems of agitation and ventilation, in combination with several different concentrations of refractory auriferous samples. These refractory samples were derived from old mine workings and the experiments were performed to test the effectiveness of the isolated species in bioleaching as pre-treatments upon the cyaniding processes. The capability of these bacteria to develop in environments with high concentrations of cyanide has also been studied, to investigate the possible use of bacteria in the biodegradation of cyanide. The presence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in acid conditions has already been tested in advance, however, the presence of fungi species in these conditions are studied to prove their efficiency as another alternative for the bioleaching of refractory auriferous minerals and Baptista, 1998).

The paper describes data from test work programs on a range of magnetite ores in Australia and overseas. The analysis looks at the behaviour of material of different sizes fed to the rolls and the change in product size as a result of that, the conclusion being that there is a logarithmic relationship. The paper develops a form of equation to predict the product size from a given feed size distribution. The behaviour of the various magnetite ores is compared to more standard test methods such as crushing work index and unconfined compressive strength.

An examination has been made of the rate and extent of removal of carbon from scrap metal charges when the melt is exposed to atmospheres which are reducing or oxidising with respect to FeO at unit activity. The mechanisms of decarburisation of molten Fe-C-S- P-Mn-Si alloys with H2/CO/H20/C02 gas mixtures with controlled compositions at high or low concentrations of carbon in the melt in the presence and in the absence of sponge iron, in both slag free melts and in the presence of various slag forming additives are discussed. A significant quantity of carbon can be removed from the metal during the melting stage and under optimum conditions, a high percentage of metal recovery and low carbon can be obtained after exposure of melt to the above gas mixture with controlled compositions. The presence of ferrous oxide provided by poorly reduced ore in the charge and the use of controlled atmospheres facilitated the removal of carbon to very low level during the melting period.
