It is a commonplace of our industry that prices of most minerals have been historically weak during the 1980s. The International Monetary Fund's index of prices of metals fell 25 per cent between 1980 and 1982, rose slightly in 1983, and has since fallen further. In December last year it was 37 per cent below its 1980 average. The few temporary exceptions to the mineral industry's malaise highlight the excess capacity, which largely explains the weakness of prices. The industry has painfully come to recognise that more satisfactory prices will not be restored until supply capability and demand move back into better balance. Mine capacity was installed in the expectation of much faster growth of demand than has occurred. For a variety of reasons mine and plant closures have been insufficient to restore equilibrium to the market-place. The industry may, therefore, have to resign itself to continued weak prices for some years more, at least by the yardstick of the 1970s. Growth rates of demand have slackened off in line with economic activity, and in response to continuing substitution and technological improvements. To the extent that the recent weakness of oil prices stimulates the industrial countries' activity, demand for non-fuel minerals may grow faster than most forecasters now predict. It is, however, much too early to say how long the weaker oil prices will persist, and even more difficult to estimate their probable effects. In typical post-war business cycles the usual response to recession was to batten down the hatches, and ride out the storm. Sooner or later, and probably sooner, demand resumed its previous trend path, and prices recovered. The market, in effect, bailed mines out of trouble; the more efficient could make attractive pre-tax profits whilst even the poor to mediocre could earn a satisfactory living. Prices rose at least as fast as general inflation, and in the early 1970s much faster. In retrospect those price rises of the early 1970s were historically abnormal but they did not appear so in the prevailing inflationary climate of the time. When the market failed in the early 1980s many of the hardest hit companies looked for scapegoats.

The detection and control of gas levels in mining is a continuing challenge for the industry. Standard detectors have many problems that could be overcome with laser based spectroscopic instruments, but to date these systems have not been suitable for mining conditions. This paper reports the development of a new digital data extraction scheme to modernise traditional cavity ring down spectroscopy (CRDS). CRDS is a direct cavity enhanced laser based absorption technique, which is used to allow the identification of an unknown substance by their molecular fingerprint; this unknown substance is identified by analysing the ring downtime of the light exiting the optical cavity. Traditional CRDS has many issues when analysing substances in hostile environments, or when multiple species may be present. This presents an alternative approach, called real-time CRDS (rtCRDS) that has the potential to overcome many of these issues and produces systems that could be used in the mining industry. The system utilises newly developed widely tuning quantum cascade lasers combined with improved optical cavities and novel digital data extraction to produce spectra over a 1500 nm range in a few seconds. The ring downtime measurements produced are accurate and have high sensitivity and maximum signal to noise ratio. This paper discusses the technique, illustrating the advantages compared to traditional systems and show real-time spectra for a set of molecules of interest to the mining industry. This paper also provided an analogy between this approach and that used in digital communications systems, and shows that this scheme is ideally suited to provide a network of sensors in hostile environments.CITATION:Harb, C C and Chalmers, D, 2015. Under platform exhaust (UPE) systems are often designed into metro stations as a means of removing heat generated by trains as they come to a halt in the platform. These systems are designed to extract heat from the brakes and brake resistors directly at the source in order to capture as much heat as possible before it can enter the public areas of the station, or contribute to the temperature build-up in the tunnels. Due to space requirements for the associated duct and air handling units, the UPE plays a significant role in the geometric design of the platform and station as a whole.In recent years questions have arisen as to the effectiveness of UPE systems. However, very little data is available for designers to use when making important decisions on the station designs for new metro systems. This is important as significant savings could be achieved by omitting or re-designing these systems for new build stations; not only due to the capital costs of space provision for the duct itself but also due to the associated operation and maintenance cost of the UPE system.This paper will present recent measurements of the UPE system of the Copenhagen metro together with one-dimensional (1D) simulations, looking at typical dispersion of heat into the station plenum box and air exchange through draught relief shafts as the train enters the station in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the UPE system. The aim of this paper is to disseminate the results of measurements and analysis to increase awareness of the issue and to provide discussion relevant to designers in their evaluation of heat removal systems in new build station designs.

This paper addresses the problem of prediction of grade variables over volumes (block estimation) for an autonomous mine. Resource estimation is usually concerned with the prediction of the quality of material over volumes (blocks in resource models). This problem is tackled by developing Bayesian block estimation with the Gaussian processes (GPs) framework. GPs are commonly used for nonparametric regression and classification and offer an elegant solution to deal with incomplete knowledge and information. A GP is defined by its mean and covariance function. The parameters of the covariance function can be learnt by maximising the marginal likelihood of the data. This offers a way of automating the covariance fitting process, while at the same time allowing for an assessment of how well the covariance function fits the data. Within the GP framework the calculation of the average grade over a volume can be performed using Bayesian quadrature, which treats an integral as a random variable. First, it is demonstrated that the block kriging equations in geostatistics are the same as Bayesian quadrature. Then, it is determined when closed form analytical solutions for the integrals are possible and quadrature approaches for approximations are briefly discussed.

The Macraes gold mine in Otago, New Zealand, is developed along the central portion of the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ), which dips gently to the NE, and is traceable over 30 km of strike, before disappearing under tertiary cover. Mineralisation is most intensely developed along the hanging wall shear, which defines the upper limit of the shear zone, although significant packages of quartz vein arrays and mineralised shears occur sporadically beneath the hanging wall shear.The Macraes gold mine is now in its 25th year of operation, well beyond the projected mine life at the time of commissioning in 1990, and currently contains over triple the measured and indicated resource inventory that was defined at start up. The extended mine life and resource growth has been driven by exploration and resource development success, efficient low-cost mining and processing, improving gold price, as well as an ethos of continuous improvement.The emphasis of Oceanagold’s exploration and resource development has shifted over time; from hanging-wall-focused mapping, soil sampling and step-out drilling, through exploitation of previously drilled stockwork mineralisation, to the pursuit of blind, higher-grade underground targets.Mineralisation within the HMSZ remains open at depth, and the regional potential has not been fully tested. Airblast overpressure legislative limits can be extremely difficult to meet throughout Australia, which has by far the most stringent limits of any nation in the world. As the difficulty in meeting the limits is strongly dependent on the scale of mining, it is not surprising that the Australian coal mining industry is experiencing particular difficulties in meeting these limits. Eight full scale overburden blasts have been modelled with respect to overpressure impact for a strip coal mine, involving both dragline (cast) blasting and pre-strip (non-cast) blasting. Overpressure levels in the range 100 to 125 dBL have been measured at distances varying from 2.4 to 5.7 km, and modelling has successfully estimated both the amplitude and shape of overpressure waveforms to within an average of 1.2 dBL. Typical errors of prediction are around 0.6 dBL. This accuracy of prediction has been achieved by considering the impact of only the face holes, and the accuracy of prediction of both shape and amplitude suggests that it is these holes which dominate the environmental overpressure impact at distances in the range two to six kilometres, for cast and pre-strip blasting operations. Modelling has been based upon the Elemental Overpressure Wavelet proposed by Richards and Moore (2002), incorporating actual hole coordinates, actual delay timing, and assumed delay scatter statistics. The incorporation of delay scatter statistics has been particularly significant, and allows the determination of the range over which the peak overpressure levels are expected to vary. To date, modelling has considered only the use of conventional pyrotechnic delays, though simple adjustment to the scatter definition would allow estimation of overpressure levels, and their variability, with electronic delays.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of froth fl otation for the recovery of gold from the gravity tailing stream of the former Lihir Gold Limited (LGL) operation in Ballarat. The P80 of the tailings was determined by screen analysis as 1 mm, with test work conducted on as received material along with samples ground to P80 sizes of 47, 78 and 134 microns. Laboratory scale batch flotation tests were conducted at both natural and elevated pH to investigate the impact of pyrite depression on gold recovery. Results indicated that although an increase in grade from approximately 0.7 g/t to 3 g/t was achievable at a natural pH and a P80 of 134 micron, gold recovery was low at just 35 per cent. Finer grind sizes were found to have an adverse effect on both grade and recovery. Future efforts will be focused on the sub 310 micron size fraction of the tailings, which was revealed to contain approximately 85 per cent of the available gold and may be amenable to cyanidation or ultra-fine gravity treatment.

Slags are the most voluminous solid by-products generated in pyrometallurgical operations, and, as such, finding an application for these oxidic materials is pertinent to maintaining resource efficiency. In particular, pyrometallurgical copper production is associated with high slag rates, typically ranging from 2.2 to 3.0 tons of slag per ton produced copper, which necessitates slag valourisation. A possible application for these iron silicate slags is as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), which effectively lowers the CO2 emissions per ton of cementitious material. Although utilising iron silicate slags as SCMs has been studied in previous work, the scientific literature has limited data on the effect of composition on the inherent reactivity in cementitious systems. More specifically, no reports on the impact of FeO/SiO2 ratio have been presented in previous publications. Therefore, the present study aimed to isolate this parameter in a synthetic FeO-SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-MgO-Cr2O3 system. Since the amorphous content is a pertinent parameter for SCMs, a high-temperature confocal laser scanning microscope (HT-CLSM) was utilised to assess the crystallisation behaviour at continuous cooling conditions. Furthermore, high-temperature rheological experiments were conducted to measure the viscosities of the slags in relation to the crystallisation behaviour. The experiments showed that depolymerising the slag by increasing the FeO/SiO2 ratio generated a less viscous slag, which showed higher tendencies for crystallisation. Furthermore, experiments assessing the inherent reactivity as an SCM showed that depolymerising the slag by increasing the FeO/SiO2 ratio as the sole independent parameter generated an initially more reactive slag. However, replacing SiO2 with FeO was found to negatively affect the reactivity as measured over seven days within the tested compositional range.

Queensland Pacific Metals (QPM) is progressing its Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub (TECH) project to produce nickel and cobalt sulfates for advanced battery materials. Apart from the nickel and cobalt sulfates, the process also generates a hematite by-product (~640 ktpa). The hematite byproduct precipitated from the process, hereafter ‘hematite precipitate’, is high in Fe and particularly low in impurities. However, it is a fine <20 μm crystalline, hydrometallurgical precipitate and is produced as a filter cake containing a high moisture content of about 15 per cent. This is considerably different from natural hematite ore and is expected to change its performance during sintering. In the present study, laboratory scale sintering tests were undertaken to evaluate the potential impacts of substitution of the hematite precipitate for traditional magnetite concentrates and further for Australian hematite-goethite ores in a simulated industry base blend. Substitution of hematite precipitate for magnetite concentrates was found to slightly increase the sintering temperature required to achieve the strength of laboratory sinters. However, further substitution of hematite precipitate for Australian hematite-goethite ores slightly reduced the sintering temperature required to achieve the laboratory sinter strength. These results reflect the reduction in Al2O3 contents of the blends and are consistent with the trend observed in industry and pilot scale facilities. The reduction in sintering temperature generally correlates to a reduction in fuel rate in the larger scale sintering process. The pore structure of selected laboratory sinters was further examined and discussed in conjunction with sinter strength. The pore structure images highlighted the relative difference between the blends with the most obvious difference being seen at 1290°C which correlates well with the laboratory tumble index (TI). The laboratory sinter samples showed an increase in porosity and irregularity of pore shape, as hematite substitution increased demonstrating the correlation between a more porous structure and a lower TI.

The relatively new field of geo-metallurgy promises to improve the predictability of mill feed quality and enhance processing outcomes. However, it is subject to the same limitations as the prediction of grade using geostatistics and has additional limitations due to the spatial distribution of the variations being measured and the sample sizes required. Schedules based on geo-metallurgical models will, in turn, be subject to variations arising from geological control and practical mining constraints.This paper discusses the key drivers of variations in mill feed quality and quantity from a mining perspective. It concludes that geo-metallurgical modelling addresses only one aspect of the problem. A case study is provided to illustrate poor predictability of metallurgical performance even with very detailed geological data.

The intention of this paper is to give a review of the present status of lignite mining in the so-called Gulf States in the United States of America, namely Texas, Arkansas, Mis- sissippi and Louisiana. The situation in these states is similar to the situation in Australia in that "Strip Mining - 45 m and Beyond" repre- sents the main technical problem to be over- come in the near future. The solution lies in the application of the bucket wheel excavator.

Flotation process intensification is often achieved through changing chemical reagent scheme or flotation machine or both, which likely brings a hefty burden to the flotation plants in terms of capital or operating expenditure. A novel approach to flotation process intensification is the use of acoustic sound, which has been demonstrated to be effective in improving the flotation of various mineral systems with different type of flotation cells. This approach was based on the dynamic stabilisation effect of acoustic sound on the flotation froth. The present work aims to understand the influence of various experimental conditions on the effectiveness of the approach. First, the effects of sound frequency and amplitude were studied with column flotation of silica particles. Results showed that the flotation performance was improved only within a certain range of frequencies and above certain amplitude. The study was then extended to the mechanical flotation of quartz particles with various size ranges and at two solids concentrations. With sound, the recoveries of different size fractions within the range of 20–212 μm were all increased. In particular, the recovery of 150–212 µm particles was increased from 0 per cent to approximately 25 per cent, demonstrating the potential for extending the upper limit of particle size in flotation by using acoustic sound. Furthermore, mechanical flotation of chalcopyrite particles at various collector dosages (50–150 g/t) was carried out with and without sound. Results showed that the increment of the final flotation recovery was increased with sound at different collector dosages. Overall, acoustic sound has the potential to be used as an effective and versatile method for flotation process intensification.

Literature surveys and testing methods and equipment are described. The use of flocculants&apos; in hydraulic filling has been tested both in laboratory and in mines and the results are very promi- sing. Finally compressibility investi- gations and some finite element calcu- lations are presented.

Product stewardship in its most basic form is simply risk management applied to the products we produce. Conceptually it may be considered as a more expansive approach to many existing safety, heath and environmental programs. Key differences include the extension of responsibility beyond the direct control of management, and consideration of the implications your products and processes have on the broader community, as opposed to the confines of an individual mine site or operation. This paper reviews the processes used by Orica Ltd to manage its product stewardship program. OricaÆs product stewardship program is expansive and supports activities and business that range from manufacture and delivery of commercial explosives and sodium cyanide to mines throughout the world, supply and operation of municipal water facilities, and manufacture and distribution of consumer products such as household paints and adhesives. We highlight the development of the program through experience both good and bad, and by use of case studies to illustrate how an active product stewardship program is an effective business risk mitigation strategy.

Kobe is divided by the Rokko Mountains, runn- ing from east to west. The southern section of Kobe is highly developed in contrast with the northern section, but big, new residential pro- jects like the Hokusetsu New Town and Hokushin New Town are steadily being developed. To handle future traffic between the two sections of the city, the double-tracked Hokushin Line, now under construction, will connect the Shin Kobe Station of the Kobe Municipal Transit (Kobe&apos;s subway system) to the Tanigami Station of the Kobe Electric Railway. The locations of Kobe city and Hokushin Line are shown in Fig.-1 and Fig.-2 respectively.

It is very rare in the underground hard rock environment to find a deposit that is ideally suited to a specific mining method. Usually the irregular shape of the orebody will allow the deposit to be extracted by more than one mining method. During the prefeasibility stage, a number of conceptual mine designs are generally evaluated to see which offers the best method of extraction for the deposit. The selected method is usually based on key decision criteria such as the overall extraction of the orebody, the amount of metal produced annually and the unit cost of production. Often the prefeasibility study document will state that the project has an NPV of æxÆ million dollars. This statement can be made without any quantitative consideration of the likely risks of the mining methods reviewed or the level of confidence in the estimation of the NPV. By assigning a probability of failure to each component of the mining cycle a measure of the risk for each method can be determined. One mining method may provide the highest NPV when it is performing well, however, there may be a higher risk of a major failure impacting on the performance of that method, eg the failure of a mass blast of a crown or rib pillar. This paper will present a flowsheet approach to the use of risk analysis for determining the likely production rates of different mining methods. This framework allows the annual metal output to be estimated and from this the NPV for each method. A level of confidence can be applied to the estimated NPV for each option. An example will be presented on how this technique has been used within the Normandy Group.

Historical exploration of the Ballarat East goldfield defined two primary quartz vein lode types. Tracking the intersection of these lodes with vertical lines of enrichment (or so-called æindicatorsÆ) was the basic practice for historical mining. This strategy proved highly successful in terms of identifying quartz veins associated with mineralisation. However, it provides little understanding of the timing or processes involved in the formation of these veins, or the associated emplacement of gold. Current underground mapping shows the Ballarat East gold deposit can be subdivided into four stages of vein formation. The earliest veins (V1 and V2) strike north-south and formed during bedding flexural slip and limb thrust fault propagation in parasitic chevron folds. V3 veins are subhorizontal and relate to further fold tightening involving a transition from east-west compression to north-south extension that initiated re-shear of bedded slip surfaces and additional strike-slip faults. Sporadic V4 veins overprint the shallow-dipping sections of V2 and V3 veins and are associated with weak north-south compression. The V4 veins mineralogy is distinguished by a high carbonate content and sphalerite-galena sulfide assemblage. Vein sampling indicates a significant increase in gold mineralisation where overprinting by the later deformation/veining has occurred. As a result of these observations, a new model is emerging that identifies the chronology, structural control and spatial distribution of respective quartz vein types. This is a major advance in terms of exploration targeting, resource modelling and mine planning.

Strain-based failure criteria have several advantages over stress-based failure criteria: they can account for elastic and inelastic strains; they utilise direct, observable effects instead of inferred effects (strain gauges versus stress estimates) and they model complete stress-strain curves, including prepeak, non-linear elasticity and post-peak strain weakening. In this study, a strain-based failure criterion derived from thermodynamic first principles utilising the concepts of continuum damage mechanics is presented. Furthermore, implementation of this failure criterion into a finite element simulation is demonstrated and applied to the stability of underground mining coal pillars.In numerical studies, pillar strength is usually expressed in terms of critical stresses or stress-based failure criteria where scaling with pillar width and height is common. Previous publications have employed the finite element method for pillar stability analysis using stress-based failure criterion, such as Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown, or stress-based scalar damage models.A novel constitutive material model, which takes into consideration anisotropy as well as elastic strain and damage as state variables, has been developed and is presented in this paper. The damage threshold and its evolution are strain-controlled, and coupling of the state variables is achieved through the damage-induced degradation of the elasticity tensor. This material model is implemented into the finite element software Abaqus and can be applied to 3D problems.Initial results show that this new material model is capable of describing the non-linear behaviour of geomaterials commonly observed before peak strength is reached as well as post-peak strain softening. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the model can account for directional dependency of failure behaviour (ie anisotropy) and has the potential to be expanded to environmental controls such as temperature or moisture.CITATION:Gaede, O, Schrank, C, Canbulat, I and Karrech, A, 2014. Scope 3 emissions are a set of often overlooked indirect greenhouse gas emissions within a company’s value chain and represent the majority of emissions for many sectors. These emissions arise from activities conducted by entities beyond the reporting organisation’s ownership or direct control and are often challenging to calculate. Scope 3 emissions typically encompass purchasing goods and services, transportation and distribution, managing operational waste, downstream processing and utilising sold products. Within the mining sector, scope 3 emissions often constitute a significant portion of the overall carbon footprint. Therefore, these emissions are a significant aspect of the future of sustainable mining. As the journey towards a world committed to achieving Net Zero Emissions has started, the time to spark a transformative conversation in the mining industry has arrived. Consequently, a better knowledge of scope 3 footprints allows organisations to assess their emission mitigation projects against the total carbon impact of their operations and products.
