Geometallurgical modelling is now a hot topic in deposit evaluation and in optimising mine performance; however, its history is long and varied. Historically metallurgical sampling has frequently suffered from a lack of data due to the cost of producing representative bulk samples. In the early 1990s geometallurgical modelling similarly suffered from a lack of data due to complex, time consuming and expensive sampling techniques. More recently, simple and relatively cheap tests for geometallurgical variables such as hardness, grindability, throughput, SAG power index, bond work index, crushing index, mineral recovery and concentrate grade have become widespread. The cheaper sampling has resulted in relatively large geometallurgical databases. However, most of the geometallurgical variables sampled are implicitly (and incorrectly) assumed to be additive when modelled by traditional geostatistical techniques, often leading to ill-informed and costly decisions. Geometallurgical variables are mostly non-additive so the current geostatistical challenge is to develop new approaches to dealing with this type of data. This paper briefly describes a historical case study of geometallurgical modelling of the George Fisher Pb-Zn mine completed in the mid 1990s, then outlines some of the current misconceptions of geometallurgical data and modelling techniques regularly applied to it, and finally discusses some recent developments in geometallurgical modelling, with examples from a number of current clients indicating the direction forward.

In the technical sense, as well as in the professional sense, the word 'model' can have many meanings. More than 23 000 references were uncovered by a simple literature search on keywords ' MO D EL#. and. (META LLURG#. or. M I NERAL#)' . For the purpose of this paper, 'models' will be considered to be mathematical formulations which attempt to represent or approximate a process. The model may be purely, or a combination of: ò fundamental models, based on the laws of physics, chemistry and thermodynamics; ò semi-empirical or phenomenological models, where an intuitive concept of the process is formulated and found by testwork to fit observed behaviour; and ò empirical or 'black-box' models (including neural networks), where a mathematically convenient form is proposed and fitted. Even under this more restricted definition, which eliminates heuristic and statistical 'models', it is clear that the efforts expended in devising and using models have exploded during the years since the first APCOM Conference in 1961, benefiting from the dramatic decrease in the cost of computer power. This paper reviews the areas of usage of computer modelling in the metallurgical and mineral processing industries, from plant design, through off-line support, to on-line modelling and automatic control. In each area, frontiers of new development of the technology are mentioned. It is noted that, while modelling is now standard practice in design, it is not yet the norm in operating and controlling plants. The reasons for this partial acceptance are, it is argued, less related to the limitations of the technology than to the human and organisational factors involved in transferring technology to implementation.

Over the past 15 years many world-class gold discoveries have been made in the region. Some deposits, such as Lihir and Porgera in P.N.G., have a contained gold resource that places them among the top dozen deposits ever found on a worldwide basis. Can we see any pattern to these discoveries, or are they the result of good luck or chance by geologists and prospectors who struck it rich? Whilst such discoveries were a feature of the gold rushes of the 1850s and the 1900s, the present boom is now scientifically based. This paper develops an argument that long-tent, multi-disciplinary exploration by experienced geoscience teams underlie the successes achieved. Dis- coveries nearly always reflect a combination of skills, drawn from the areas of geology, geochemistry, geophysics and remote sensing, and a team approach. They do not represent the chance finds of a prospector's pick or such as the Norseman discovery where the gold reef was first noted by the prospector when his horse fell over the outcrop. The following deposits provide major examples of exploration successes within the Australian-Pacific region, it is not an exhaustive list and I have noted other significant producers at the end of this paper. For the Australian mines listed and based on our estimates for 1990 gold production, they represent about 20 per cent of the Australian production total.

Morro Agudo is an underground zinc and lead mine owned by Nexa Resources. The mine uses room and pillar as the main mining method. The recovery of pillars as well as the opening of new excavations using sublevel stoping as mining method has been studied. On some occasions, the need to recover pillars and open a stope by using the sublevel method happens in a region that is already excavated or in deeper areas than those mined so far. These changes represent a major geotechnical challenge due to the complex openings of the mine and interaction between two different mining methods. Historically, geotechnical mapping, kinematic analysis and a 2D numerical model were used to evaluate the new mine openings, and in 2021, 3D numerical model was introduced, which enabled global and local assessment of new excavations impact and the stability of openings after recoveries. The 3D model, made with MAP3D, is used to evaluate each pillar to be recovered, considering the spans of the resulting openings, the ideal sequencing of removal to maintain stability, in addition to the impact and geometry of the pillars left in the chambers. Pillar recoveries done in 2021 and the impact of it on the pillars left were the sources of the back analysis to calibrate parameters inputted on numerical model to assess recovery on new chambers and Phyllite has been considered into the model and it has been a source of instability due to its parallel position to roof of room and pillars and stope hanging walls.

The key concepts relating to the calculation of recoverable reserves for selective mining in open pit gold operations are discussed. While the general concepts are relevant to a wide range of gold ore bodies, their application is specific to particular ore bodies.The important factors contributing to the recoverable reserves aregeology, mining method, dilution, ore loss, sampling methods and theultimate bench height used in production.The implications of current methods of computing recoverable reservesare reviewed and some alternative approaches to recoverable reservecomputation based on production experience are presented.

In January 1989, Western Mining Corporation (WMC) acquired the Perseverance and Rocky's Reward orebodies and associated infrastructure from the Agnew Mining Company (AMC). AMC had closed the operation in August 1986 and it had been on care and maintenance since that time. To return the operation to full production as quickly as possible it was planned to mine the Rocky's Reward orebody by opencut mining and treat this ore whilst the underground Perseverance workings were rehabilitated. Removal of overburden from Rocky's Reward thus commenced immediately with a target of April 1989 for delivery of the first ore to the concentrator. Extensive rehabilitation and upgrading of the concentrator commenced in late January, and continued in stages for an 18 month period. The first stage consisted of overhauling all existing equipment and completing a crusher upgrade commenced by AMC prior to the mine closure. During this period, it was necessary to recruit a workforce and re-establish all the required support structure. In late April the plant commenced commissioning trials on mullock. The first ore was crushed on the 11th May 1989 and concentrate produced the following day. From May 1989 to June 1990 the plant was producing nickel concentrate whilst further upgrading continued. During this period, the flotation capacity was tripled by installation of a bank of eight Wemco 144L flotation cells in rougher-scavenger duties and two 12 metre by 2 metre diameter columns in cleaning duties. The existing vacuum drum filters were replaced by two Larox PF32 pressure filters, eliminating the need for solar drying and allowing the flash drier to be fed direct from the filters. These, along with a major borefield expansion and further work to the crusher increased the nominal plant capacity from 600,000 to 1,000,000 t/yr. The plant achieved the 1,000,000 t/yr rate in April 1990.

The shift towards clean energy technologies is having a significant impact on the mining industry, with the demand for minerals such as copper, nickel, cobalt, lithium, manganese, and graphite increasing exponentially. To meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, mineral requirements for clean energy technologies would need to quadruple by 2040, and to achieve net-zero globally by 2050, mineral inputs in 2040 would need to be six times more than today. The most significant driver of mineral demand is electric vehicles (EVs) and battery storage, with lithium seeing the fastest growth, and copper demand doubling over the same period due to the expansion of electricity networks globally. The demand for these minerals is expected to rise significantly as investments in clean energy technologies continue to grow in the future. As the world moves towards a decarbonised economy, the minerals industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its environmental and social impacts and meet the increased demand for minerals. Mining companies are facing additional challenges due to the depletion of near-surface mineral deposits globally, with more mines transitioning from open pits to underground. The transition to underground mining requires the right strategy to economically access deeper mineable inventories and to keep up with future clean energy technology demands to achieve net-zero globally by 2050. One key way to achieve this is through decarbonisation using ‘green’ mining technologies such as replacing current primary diesel mining fleets with battery electric vehicles (BEVs). However, these measures through electrification overlook the bigger opportunity to maximise the socio-economic returns from the mine while also reducing the overall carbon footprint. Corporate cut-off grade policy is one of the most significant influencers on the total environmental and social impacts of the mining industry. The purpose of a corporate cut-off grade policy is to implement strategies aligned with achieving all the mining companies’ corporate goals, with decarbonisation targets becoming a primary driver for mining companies. Table 1 shows the evolution of cut-off theory with the increasing number of dimensions and driving inputs per iteration.

In the late-1990s, and into the 2000s, many industries, including the mining industry, have seen significant transaction activity by way of acquisitions, floats, joint ventures and major capital projects. The fundamental financial trends are two-fold. First and foremost, a high level of transaction activity within the industry and secondly, the recently introduced requirement for corporate governance standards, have placed increasing pressure on the directors of mining companies. This paper will deal with specifically corporate governance implications of any large capital investment transaction and the associated impact on the mining industry. To provide the framework for this paper, I have looked at a number of recent transactions as well as corporate governance recommendations from the ASX and the HIH Royal Commission.

Feed ore variability, the major disturbance into a mineral processing plant receives considerable attention operationally, and at research and strategic levels to ensure that the throughput of the ore are maintained at all times whilst encouraging a sustainable approach to recovering the valuable minerals from ore bodies. Effort and insights from mineralogical and processing characterisation (eg. ore hardness) of sub-ore body domains allows sequencing for processing to ensure consistency and throughput for the size sensitive grinding unit processes. Optimising the blast fragmentation has benefit as does pre-concentration using ore sorting. Blending of ore domains with different characteristics is common for operations. In recent years a number of technologies have become available for on-line and more rapid assessment of ore and have been discussed in a recent paper by Cameron et.al. (2016) as an opportunity for further utilisation of mine-to-mill (and mine to product) strategies. Current concepts have focused on extensive characterisation of ores so that current control practices can be realised and made more effective with relatively slow measurements and actuation. There appears to have been a swing away from the study of mathematics, the physical sciences, foreign languages and the classical humanities subjects by many students in high schools in Victoria. The same trend is believed to be occurring in other states as well. This has the direct result of many students entering tertiary studies inadequately prepared academically. This is particularly true in engineering and commerce. The position as far as postgraduate training in the areas of concern to the minerals industry is critical with almost no Australian nationals undertaking advanced technological studies.

The Middle Proterozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Belt Supergroup contain important metallic mineral deposits like the diagenetic sediment-hosted stratiform copper mineralization, including the Troy (Spar Lake) deposit and the epigenetic hydrothermal veins in the lower Belt and Ravalli Group in the Coeur d'Alene district. Magnetite (Fe3O4) is a common and widespread accessory mineral in these rocks and can have multiple origins including ore stage in deposits, mobilization stage in source rocks, metamorphism of red beds and alteration mineral in thin halos enveloping Ag-rich veins in the Coeur dÆAlene district. As shown in several classic studies, the composition of magnetite from igneous rocks varies significantly in response to controlling factors such as melt composition, temperature, silica activity, and oxygen and sulphur fugacity. Therefore, the distinctively different geologic settings within the Belt Supergroup strongly suggest that there may be differences in the magnetite compositions. However, initial microprobe analyses detected no variation in magnetite composition.   Three possibilities may give an adequate explanation for these initial results: 1.      the magnetite formed primarily as pure Fe3O4, 2.      one or more tectonothermal events led to regional scale re-equilibration that affected all rocks in the field area, and 3.      the variations in the composition are below the detection limit of the microprobe.

China has been producing gold for more than 4000 years with gold production increasing substantially since the 1980s, from about 25 tonnes in 1980 to some 160 tonnes in 1998. More than 80 per cent of the gold production is from East China. However, complete information on eastern China gold has been rarely reported internationally. This is a general overview on the tectonics and metallogeny of gold deposits in East China. The geology of these gold deposits is compiled mainly from data and information reported in China, and is also based on the authorÆs work in China from 1974 to 1986 and a recent visit to China.

Structural geological modelling is a process which results in a 3D computer model that represents the essence of the geological and structural understanding of an area and is presented in a way that is directly useable, typically by internal customer groups. BHP Iron Ore operates a number of open cut iron ore mines in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia. The largest mine is the Mt Whaleback Mine located at Newman close to the southern margin of the Pilbara Craton. The structurally complex Mt Whaleback Mine is the largest metalliferous single pit open cut mine in Australia with over 1.6 billion tonnes of original iron ore resource. Additional to the Mt Whaleback Mine, a number of satellite open cut iron ore mines are operated by BHP Iron Ore (BHPIO) in the Newman area. BHPIO also operates the Yarrie mine approximately 400 km north of Newman at the northern edge of the Pilbara Craton Most of the BHPIO mines are located in the Archean- Proterozoic Hamersley Province that overlies the Archean granite-greenstone terrain of the Pilbara Craton. The orebodies are considered to be the result of supergene enrichment of the approximately 2.5 Ga Brockman Iron Formation and the slightly older Marra Mamba Iron Formation. Folding represents the most prevalent and penetrative structural element in the Newman area. Four folding phases have been identified regionally (Fj, F2, F3, F5), while a more local folding deformation (F4) developed mainly in the Mt Whaleback and Orebody 29 mine area. A northeast trending, southeast dipping, 45 km long, high angle, normal fault zone, the Whaleback Fault Zone, cuts through the Mt Whaleback mine resulting in an approximately 1400 in gap in stratigraphy. Additionally, two large, low angle, normal faults, the East Footwall Fault and the Central Fault, are present at the Mt Whaleback Mine. During the formation of supergene orebodies, up to 40 - 45 per cent volume loss occurred resulting in local non-tectonic deformation in the orebodies.

The use of computational simulation to predict the performance of existing equipment or for the design of improved mineral processing equipment will be referred to as Computational Mineral Processing (CMP) in this paper. The emphasis will be on solving the governing equations for liquid solid flows in complex geometric domains to obtain, typically, the three-dimensional distributions of velocity and pressure for the liquid phase and the velocity and concentration for the solid phase. The underlying technology, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), is very well-developed in other industries (aircraft, car and chemical) and forms a vital part of product design and analysis. The subsequent design of improved mineral processing equipment may also involve finite element structural analysis (FESA). Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element structural analysis (FESA) are part of the generic discipline of Computational Engineering and Science (CES). Ciment and Scherlis (1993) define CES as `The systematic application of computing systems and computational solution techniques to mathematical models formulated to describe and simulate phenomena of scientific and engineering interest'. Increasing computer power (Kaufmann and Smarr, 1993), is a dominant factor determining the rapid growth of industrial utilisation of CES. This increase is happening at both the supercomputer and the workstation level. Indeed, today's typical workstation, a Hewlett-Packard 735, is as powerful as a CDC 7600, the leading supercomputer in 1970. Future computer architectures are expected to become increasingly parallel (Gartner Group, 1990) allowing a sustained performance of a teraflop (a million megaflops) to be achieved well before the Sydney Olympics in the year 2000. It is recognised that the modem development of most disciplines in the physical sciences rests on the three complementary strategies of experimentation, analysis and computational simulation. As the 21st century is approached the volume of computational simulation, both fundamental and applied, is growing dramatically and the role of experimentation is diminishing. In the area of equipment design, CES provides the following advantages over experimental testing and measurement: 1. lead time in design and development is significantly reduced; 2. CES can simulate conditions not reproducible in experimental tests; 3. CES provides detailed and comprehensive information; and 4. CES is more cost-effective and time-efficient. The ultimate benefit for industry is greater productivity and hence greater profitability. The broader issues in relation to CFD are discussed by Fletcher (1993b). In the five- to ten-year time frame, growth in computer power will make it practical to combine CFD and FESA with optimisation procedures to produce a design process that is almost fully computerised. The application of single liquid cement for fracture grouting in base rock may have history more than 120 years. The disadvantage of it is difficult to increase the grouting efficiency, because the jelling time of it is very long and hard to control. The double liquid grout, such as chemical grouts and cement water glass grout was developed at the end of 1960.'s Although the jelling time of this kind of grout can be controlled, it mast adopt double liquid grouting technology, use complicated equipment and is not easy to control component's ratio of the grout. Another disadvantage for chemical grout is high price, and have pollution to environment. OCE series single liquid grout is the effective grout material developed recently by making large efforts in Ohina. Main feature of it is that the jelling time is easy to control, materials from cement and clay are very cheap and without pollution to environment, and the grout can be injected by single liquid technology. The effect of QCE series grout has been proven by its application in China. It can be believed that QCE grout has great economic efficiency and will give a push to develop grout material.

The magnesite deposits near Young, N.S.W., occur in decomposed serpentine rock below a soil. and alluvial cover. They show considerable variation in both quality and depth which greatly hampers mining operations. Seismic refraction techniques afford methods of conducting detailed and reconnaissance surveys which yield a depth and velocity analysis of the serpentine/magnesite refractor. The measured seismic velocities may be used as an index of the presence and quality of the deposits. The Seismic Timer which was used in the test surveys is a simplified seismograph which makes use of seismic reciprocity by replacing the conventional seismic shotpoints with geophone stations and the conventional geophone stations with impact points of a sledge hammer. Thi,s enables the use of detailed seismic refraction techniques which yield the depth and velocity analysis of the refractor.INTRODUCTIONThe magnesite deposits near Young, N.S.W., were produced by a process of leaching and enrichment of magnesium in serpentine rock. The magnesite occurs in nodular form emplaced in decomposed rock at shallow depths below soil and alluvium. The depth ranges from close to the surface down to some tens of feet. The deposits are patchy and show considerable variation in both quality and depth, giving riseto considerable difficulties in mining operations.Due to the thorough leaching of the surface material, geochemical tests carried out so far have not proved satisfactory for locating the pockets of magnesite enrichment.It was decided to test the application of detailed shallow seismic refraction methods to the investigation of both the depth and quality of the deposits. Computer controlled truck dispatching systems is a newly-developed technical system in surface mines with shovel-truck technology. The real time dispatching criteria, as the core of optimal truck dispatching software, are analysed and a new criterion, complex dispatching criterion, is put forward. Dispatching criteria previously proposed include: 1. `Earliest Loading' (EL) - to assign a truck to the shovel at which the truck can be loaded earliest. 2. `Max Truck' (MT) - to assign a truck to the shovel at which the truck will have the shortest waiting time. 3. `Max Shovel' (MS) - to assign a truck to the shovel which has been waiting for the longest time. 4. `Minimum Saturation Degree' (MSD) - to assign a truck to the shovel at the branch where the truck flow saturation degree is minimum. 5. `Minimum Saturation Degree with Truck Cycle time consideration' (MSDTC) - as the MSD principle, with the truck travel cycle also considered. 6. `Fixed Dispatching' (FIX) - to assign trucks to fixed shovels. A system simulation model has been set up for truck dispatching system analysis. A few surface coal mines have been selected for case studies. Equipment waiting times and shift production of the system are obtained as the main outputs of the model. Simulation results show that each dispatching criterion has its own applicable range, no one can absolutely dominate the others. For example, when under-trucked, EL and MT criterion can obtain higher production than the MS criterion; when over-trucked, it is vice versa; while for MSD criteria, better results can be obtained no matter how the truck numbers fluctuate. From the view point of shovel output balance, large fluctuations occur for EL and MT criteria, while a good balance can be obtained for other criteria. In the light of dynamic change of mining system conditions, a single dispatching criterion is not necessarily reasonable. A complex dispatching criterion has been put forward to seek the complex optimum effect. Taking the advantage of each dispatching criteria, the dispatching result of a complex dispatching criterion dominates over individual dispatching criterion and a comprehensive optimum effect can be reached.

Pyrite concentrate and calcine from the Nanjing Lead-Zinc-Silver Mines, China, were leached with aqueous cyanide and thiourea solutions. More than half of the contained gold and silver was able to be extracted from the roaster calcines. The very fine dissemination of precious metal grains, high roasting temperature (850 - 900°C) and residual sulphur are believed responsible for the Iow extractions.A recovery of about 70 per cent for both silver and gold was able to be obtained with cyanide and with thiourea leachants when the pyrite was roasted in the laboratory at temperatures between 600 and 650°C.Thiourea, as an alternative leachant, has received much attention recently and a series of constant potential leaching tests was conducted.When the thiourea to formamidine disulphide mole ratio was about two, the precious metal extraction was greatest. In the Nanjing calcined material, this occurred at a potential of about 210 mV relative to a standard calomel electrode.

The title of my address today 'An Environment for Mineral Development' is a play on words, but I wish to use the meaning of the word environment in the broadest possible context to comment on those factors that control mineral development in New Zealand today. Of prime importance, let us consider the current economic environment in which New Zealanders live and work, as individuals and communities, and as a trading nation. It is the expanding growth requirements of the emerging nations and the interactive economic forces of our international trading partners and competitors, that dictates New Zealand's economic environment and thus the priority to develop its natural resources. As an itinerant New Zealander who has kept a watching brief over the economic environment in New Zealand over the last 30 years, I say, without prejudice, that I am concerned to have seen New Zealand's external and internal trading position deteriorate so rapidly in the last decade. I am concerned that a significant proportion of the population has been extremely slow to realize that with the creation of the European Economic Community, in the late 1950s, and following the first OPEC oil crisis in 1973, New Zealand in a corporate sense came close to technical bankruptcy.
