Among the various methods of thick-seam mining already well-tried in practice longwall caving with extraction of a single slice, as thick as possible, abandoning the top and/or the bottom coal, seems to be the most suitable one for the Australian coal mining industry. The production units of the future should be equipped with heavy double-drum shearer-loaders, wide armoured conveyors, (with one or two central chains) and shield support. Material of this type has been developed for seams up to 6 m thick. Output figures of more than 6,000 tROM/d from a single face can be looked upon as a quite realistic expectation. The problems of co-ordinating such large production units with the whole layout of the mine are discussed. The factors to be taken into account in the planning work and for preven- tion of mine fires caused by spon- taneous combustion are dealt with. For economic reasons the highest possible utilization factor of the very expensive equipment must be aimed at. Furthermore, the seams or parts of seams to be extracted should be carefully selected.

For the last 50 years, traditional safety management has improved safety performance by: • Fixing the environment (eliminating the hazard). • Improving the system (more/less rules, procedures etc). • Making safety more conscious (more/better interactions about the importance of safety). Although these approaches certainly have merit, and may be part of an overall solution, they are not enough to prevent many modern-day incidents. Today, these three approaches are used more than before, and are used better than ever before. Yet, workplace fatalities in Australia have stagnated from 2013 to 2019, as have the number of incidents, even serious ones. In the USA, workplace fatalities have increased by 15 per cent in the same period.

A significant number of new techniques have been developed, and Australian companies are now at the forefront of exploration technology worldwide. Filters are used in water treatment and hydrometallurgical process plants for objectives such as generating a dry spadable solid, pumpable high density slurry or high purity filtrate. The priority objective of every polishing filter, sometimes also termed clarifying filters is high purity filtrate and these are found in many diverse industries and even different applications within the same industry.To generate a high purity filtrate, process designers have the choice of many different polishing filter products, but in reality very few polishing filters are based on fundamentally different filtering concepts.This paper reviews the technology merits of well-known and the more recently developed polishing filter products and aims to assist metallurgists and engineers with the selection of an appropriate polishing filtration technology for pregnant liquor filtration and other process applications, plus a guide to best practice.CITATION:Shipard, S, 2013. Adaptive mineral processing has to rely on spatially predicted information on primary geometallurgical parameters, like phase composition, size and shape distributions of grains from various phases, portions of value elements in different grain types. Naively, one would predict these parameters geostatistically and select an optimal processing for the predicted structure. This is suboptimal, due to various kinds of non-linearities in the problem. First, some primary geometallurgical quantities themselves are measured in non-real scales, like compositional or stereologically distorted geometric information. Standard geostatistics has to be replaced by compositional and geometric geostatistics, involving complex transforms and restrictions. Further, only partial and uncertain information is available, introducing a stochastic character to the optimisation problem. Moreover, many response variables leading to costs, outcomes and eventual effects of later processing depend non-linearly on the primary geometallurgical parameters, which implies that the final monetary value is not estimated unbiasedly by kriging. Finally unbiased linear prediction (such as kriging) is not the best method of prediction for decision making. The conditional expectation of the monetary values is needed instead. The impact of these problems is explained in this paper, with simplified examples, and a first approach to a general solution is proposed. I know the theme of the Congress is "The 21st Century - Mining for Mankind" but I hope you will understand why my address touches upon some near-term issues as well. With the world oil market the way it is at present, "the long term" seems to be next week and no one is even sure what will happen tomorrow! So I am going to take a little licence with the theme of the Congress and talk about some fundamental issues that have much to do with the current uncertainties. The ways in which these issues are resolved and the role governments elect to play in the next few years will determine both the shape of the petroleum industry in the 1990s and beyond and the success with which we can confront a growing and inevitable future dependence on OPEC oil resources. But just in case you are not familiar with what has been happening in the petroleum industry recently and why the future seems more uncertain than ever, let me show you the gyrations in oil prices over the past 13 years, and remember that it is only another 13 years or so years to the 21st Century.

The relative infrequency of fatalities and other serious events can give them an appearance of being random, of being beyond any reasonable degree of anticipation and prevention. In fact, the vast majority of these events result from exposures that are identifiable, measurable, and manageable. The lessons of prominent incidents, such as the Space Shuttle Columbia, OxyÆs Piper Alpha, Esso Longford, BP Texas City, Massey Mine, as well as lessons from single fatality events, is that alongside the proximate causes of each incident, there also coexisted an underlying fabric of systems, mechanisms, and culture that allowed risk in the workplace to persist and often to become normalised. All of these ingredients of the organisationÆs safety fabric lend themselves to the influence and intervention of senior leaders. The difficulty is that traditional injury prevention paradigms are not sufficient for addressing the precursors that lead up to catastrophic and fatal events. A recent study of such events, led by Dr Thomas Krause concluded that the descriptive aspect of HeinrichÆs safety triangle is useful, but that the predictive aspect is not. The study surfaced reasons why a reduction in less serious injuries does not necessarily correspond to a proportionate reduction in catastrophic and fatal risks. This presentation expands on the findings to include the concept of exposure to the event potential linked to precursor events and the framework for leading an organisation to be both cognisant and effective in eliminating such events.CITATION:Russell, R, 2012. This paper is intended to help design engineers, operating staff and plant managers understand the principles of metallurgical gas handling systems design. It also explains operating, safety and energy savings issues that the designer should take into consideration in the design of process off-gas systems for sulfide smelters. Primary smelting reactors, converters, and other off-gas sources impose challenging duty requirements on the various components of the gas handling systems. This paper reviews the design of common system components including the hood for gas capture at the system inlet, gas conditioning, gas cleaning, ductwork, dampers, hot gas fans, and the appropriate use of instrumentation and controls. The engineer must also be aware of how ductwork system effects and heat losses influence system performance. Also, the analysis of a recently-designed gas handling system will be reviewed, which includes high-strength SO2 gas from a smelting reactor, asymmetrically located Peirce-Smith converters, and a gas mixing chamber to mix the gases before they are sent to two acid plants of different sizes.

The Liddell longwall equipment consists of 118 four leg supports, a shearer and armoured face conveyor of 170mm length. The equipment was supplied to Coal & Allied Operations Pty Limited (Coal and Allied) by Westfalia Australia Pty Limited (Westfalia). The project commenced as a feasibility study in 1983, a proposal was put to the board of directors in March 1984 and a specification distributed. Nine companies tendered for the supply of a longwall face and the supplier was selected from a short list of four companies. At the same time Coal & Allied examined the facilities at Liddell Colliery and decided to upgrade the conveyor belt system to cater for the high production from a longwall face. The surface facilities, transport system, water and electrical supplies to the colliery were also to be upgraded. During the twelve months to December 1985, the colliery was upgraded while the longwall equipment was being manufactured. The manufacturing process involved roof support testing, compatibility testing and finally a build up of 40m of longwall face

Despite mineral sand occurrences having been noted since the 1970s, the Wemen North Mine is the first operation to commence commercial mining within the inland Murray Basin. The deposit was discovered in the 1990s and, following lengthy resource development, mining commenced in 2001. This initial mine was established as a pilot operation to test the commercial viability of mining in the Murray Basin, with subsequent expansions planned if the mine proves successful. The deposit lies beneath arable farmland close to the Murray River and is hosted by Pliocene marine sands, with a geometry resembling a classical beach strand placer. The operation utilises traditional dry mining overburden removal techniques, with ore mining carried out using a floating dredge and concentrator. This paper looks at the geology of the Wemen North deposit, the mining techniques and challenges as well as grade control practices employed to mine this palaeo-beach placer deposit.

Australia is the dominant iron ore supplier to the Asian market, a position that began to emerge with the development of the Pilbara in the 1960s. Iron ore is now one of AustraliaÆs main commodity exports and is likely to remain so well into the future. The annual price negotiations are the focus of widespread comment and speculation by financial analysts, journalists and mining professionals. Much is written on the subject, but how much is understood? What is the process all about and what can mine managers learn from understanding the pricing mechanism? Every one of the major regional iron ore markets has its own characteristics. The focus here is Australian supply specifically to Asia, far and away the biggest and fastest-growing of these regional markets. The core of the paper reviews and explains the key elements and procedures that contribute to pricing iron ore in Asia, a market that has long been dominated by the Japanese steel mills (JSMs) and that is now feeling the full force generated by the rapid industrialisation of China. First, however, it is important to understand how this market has evolved over the past 40 years, and the key relationships that have shaped and continue to shape the iron ore price. A description of the essential technical and commercial factors follows. Each area is explained in some detail to provide an overall demonstration of the linkages and the importance of understanding the various influences on the pricing process.

A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as Zone C, is a measured 440,000t @ 17g/t Au and 46g/t Ag with an additional indicated resource of 120,000t @ 16g/t Au. A diatreme breccia localised at an intersection of structures, and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are highly indicative of a porphyry association. Typical epi-thermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing. platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineral-isation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100m strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralising fluids were sourced from the diatreme margins and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting. Potential for more ore remains within the Gufinis and the 120 veins as well as in the outlying Prospects.

The selection of the ore haulage system is one of the most crucial decisions made in the development of an underground mining project. The haulage system is, once selected, one of the components of a mine that defines its ability to respond to changes in mining inventory and the market conditions for its products. Over the last decade, in Australia at least, this selection process has largely centred on the debate over the merits of shaft and decline truck haulage. Little attention, if any, was given to the application of inclined conveyor haulage as a real alternative to the shaft and truck haulage. This is despite well established precedents for its application in the underground coal industry and some limited applications in underground metalliferous mines. This paper seeks to explore the case for the application of inclined conveyors as a legitimate ore haulage system for underground mines. The case for conveyor haulage is illustrated by an overview of the application of conveyors at some existing operations, and discussion of what conveyors have to offer as a mine haulage system and the issues that are associated with them. Material drawn from the feasibility studies for NewcrestÆs Ridgeway mine and Telfer Deeps Project is presented as case studies that considered selection of inclined conveyor haulage. The purpose of these case studies is to highlight the value of impartially approaching tasks of this type with a robust plan. This plan should be able to respond to issues identified as the task progresses towards the objective of finding the right solution for an ore haulage system.

The fine grained complex orebody at Elura contains galena, silver and sphalerite in a matrix which is mostly pyrite; sulphides account for about 90% of the orebody. A differential flotation circuit is operated to con- centrate lead and silver in the first section and zinc in the second. The metallurgical performance to date indicates the need for improvement. The lead section has been sampled in detail to comprehensively assess its overall performance and to define problems associated with lead and silver flotation. The substantial amount of pyrite in the feed dominated the perfor- mance of each stage of the separation. It was responsible for extensive dilution of all concentrates and, as a consequence, for very large circulating loads. The rougher concentrate contained 68% pyrite some of which was rejected through the three stages of cleaning to 39% in the final concen- trate. However, this was still sufficient to hold the assay of this product below 45% Pb. Size by size behaviour shows that flotation rates of the valuable minerals, as characterised by their rate coefficients, were low through- out the circuit. There was a significant deterioration in these rates between rougher and cleaner I stages which resulted in large circulating loads between these stages. There was practically no recovery of coarse valu- able minerals to the final concentrate. The dilution of the final concen- trate by non-sulphide gangue was not a major problem. If the recovery of the galena and silver in the +38¦m size range could be raised to that of the - 381Lm size range, galena recovery would rise from 78% to 86% and silver recovery would improve from 46% to 59%. The Pb grade of the final concentrate would remain the same.

Drill and blast mining techniques are used to mine coal outburst prone and high gas content coals in Australia. As the risk of an outburst is increased in high gas content coal, it is considered that drill and blast is the safest way to mine coals that refuse to yield gas even after considerable gas drainage efforts. The availability of suitable explosives for drill and blast in Australia is dependent on the æBuxtonÆ tests. With the diminished coal operations in England, the type and supply of such explosives is tenuous, causing significant disruption to the production of coal in some mines. In an attempt to free up the availability of explosives a review of the methods used for the testing of coal mine explosives was undertaken to ascertain the scientific basis for these tests. It was hoped that this comparison would allow regulators to have the confidence in explosives that had been tested elsewhere. Although this was not achieved, it has spawned a major research project that aims to better understand the mechanisms involved so that either confirmation of the current testing regime can be achieved or more suitable and scientifically based tests can be adopted. This paper looks at the ongoing research program investigating the parameters that are involved with methane ignitions from explosives. By utilising high-speed data capture and processing the research project is trying to view an ignition as it happens to identify the mechanisms involved so that better explosives can be designed for the coal mining industry.

Magnetite has been used in coal processing for many years and it is likely that its use will continue well into the twenty first Century. While magnetite is only a minor cost component in coal processing, the use of processed magnetite in dense medium separation is essential to provide the split of quality coal products which the markets of today demand. The occurrence of magnetite in Australia is relatively abundant, but a combination of its iron content, magnetic properties, quality and proximity to the coal processing plants is essential to provide a low cost product for use in the Coal Industry. The demand for more splitting of coal in coal processing may require more grades of magnetite, particularly as a finer grade lower specific gravity medium to separate the finer quality low ash coals.

Cadia Hill Pit is a gold copper porphyry deposit hosted in monzonite. The pit slope design is primarily based on structural controls related to faults and shears with largely massive rock masses between the structures. The slope design attempts to achieve an optimum configuration at a bench to overall scale, considering economics and safety implications against the geotechnical and structural conditions. To date the slopes have been mined at interramp angles of up to 60¦ over heights of 120 m. Limited slope and batter failures that have occurred are structurally controlled and occur rapidly. The pit-mining schedule requires concurrent mining of part of the final pit walls and the progressive interim cutbacks. Engineering and operational solutions to hazard reduction and risk management issues have been implemented wherever viable to æengineerÆ out the hazard and mitigate the risks. However, comprehensive management plans and operating procedures have also played a vital role. This paper details the management plan and the operating procedures that have been developed and implemented to mitigate the risks associated with rock falls.

The Brightwater conveyance system is located near Seattle, Washington in the north-western United States. The East Contract portion of the system consists of a 4.3 km long, 5.9 m diameter tunnel in soft ground and two large shafts constructed in challenging soil conditions. The two shafts are situated side-by-side in an urban valley. One will house an influent structure to direct incoming sewage and outgoing treated effluent, while the other will house a 645 megalitre per day (ML/d) influent pump station. The tunnel contains four pipelines: two force mains to convey untreated wastewater eastward from the new pump station to a new treatment plant, one gravity-pressure pipeline to convey treated effluent westward to a new outfall in Puget Sound, and one high-pressure pipeline to convey reclaimed water from the treatment plant to downstream distribution points. The shafts and the tunnel presented many design challenges. Groundwater is near the surface in the area surrounding the shafts, and compressible peat and clay soils preclude dewatering during construction. These and other challenges were encountered during design of the pump station shaft and multiple-pipe tunnel. The challenges were addressed by a design that includes a dual intersecting circular cell shaft (referred to as æthe peanutÆ) and a single tunnel into which stacked pipes will be æstuffedÆ. This paper discusses the design approach and design details for both elements.

This opportunity to present a few thoughts on the question of professional education and training comes at a most appropriate time. In Britain, a great deal of energy is being expended in this, so-called, post-Finniston era, to create a new look for the status of engineers and engineering by the Engineering Council. Naturally, the tune and the tempo are being called by the big institutions which essentially serve the manufacturing industries. However, the Engineering Council in Great Britain also includes the mining and processing institutions such as the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy (IMM) and so there is a chance - if it is taken - for us to contribute to the debate and the determinations that emanate from it. The IMM, of course, caters for the professional status of those engaged in the mining and minerals industries and includes many who do not see themselves as engineers. Nevertheless, the debate is important to these other groups whose livelihood is inextricably bound up with those who are engineers and there are many facets of the engineering policies being shaped that will, I am sure, eventually be enshrined in the requirements for professional status across all the various disciplines in our industry.

During the past three years there have been several parties prospecting for oil in the Stat6 of Queensland, and It was: gratifying to read the newspaper headlines last Christmasabout the discovery of oil in the Moohie Nol Well. This discovery was not only a welcome Christmas present for Australia but marked up another success for the seismicmethod in exploration for oil.The purpose of this paper is to discuss the operationaI aspects of seismic work in Queensland with-emphasis on shot-haledrilling. The paper is based upon the experience of one particular seismic survey which began in December of - 1959 and is still inoperation. This survey is being conducted by the Petty Geophysical Engineering - Company of San Antonios, Texas, and the Queensland area involved is in the general vicinity of Quilpie, Dlackall and Charleville.
