A 250 tons per day ammonia-ammonium carbonate leaching plant is now being operated by Samin Limited, to extract copper from the oxidised ores at the Burra mine. This forms the first stage of a plant, which will eventually have a capacity in excess of 1,000 tons per day. The article reviews the history of the mines at Burra and the metallurgical studies which have been undertaken since the old mines closed in 1917, in an endeavour to recover the copper from the low-grade deposits left by the original miners. The reasons why an ammonia leaching process was selected instead of the conventional flotation or acid leaching methods are discussed. The paper concludes with a detailed description of the plant and the basis on which it was designed.

The Olympic Dam mining operation is some 520 kilometres NNW of Adelaide on the Roxby Downs Pastoral lease. The deposit containing copper, uranium, gold and silver was discovered in 1975 by Western Mining Corporation (WMC). A joint venture was formed in mid-1979 between WMC (51 per cent) and British Petroleum (BP, 49 per cent) for the development and exploitation of the deposit. WMC assumed 100 per cent ownership after acquiring BP's share in early-1993. Ore is won from a highly mechanised underground mining operation and processed to refined products. Current annual output from the mining of 3.0 Mt of ore is approximately 83 500 t of refined copper, 1400 t of uranium oxide, 750 kg of gold and 12 000 kg of silver. Conventional long hole, open stoping techniques are used to extract the production ore. Since stope production began in April 1988, full surveys and appraisals of stopes have been carried out to evaluate the integrity of the design and blasting techniques. This evaluation included the determination of the degree of dilution or non break that had occurred. Performance information also made it possible to re-design any adjacent stopes to retrieve remaining ore and conversely, avoid the chances of targeting backfilled material in the future. Performing stope surveys proved not only to be a time-consuming process but one fraught with access and line-of-sight problems. Occasionally it was not possible to obtain any stope survey data, and as was often the case with the mine pass system, rarely. In 1992 the sudden failure of the pillar between the fine ore and mullock passes and the subsequent delays to production, emphasised the need to effectively monitor pass wear. Initial information regarding the development of the Cavity Measurement System (CMS) prototype (Figure 1) indicated that it had the potential to solve these problems by the introduction of a remote scanning device into a cavity. Following a great deal of investigation, Olympic Dam Operations purchased the first CMS in Australia. This paper discusses its application for all underground void surveys and the procedures developed to manage both field and office requirements.

The use of dolomite as a refractory began in England about 1870 when the basic Bessemer process for the removal of phosphorus from steel was developed by Thomas and Gilchrist.Knowledge of dolomite as a refractory in this country goes back to the early part of this century, at the time when the Hoskins Brothers took over the Lithgow Iron and Steel Works from W. Sandford. The practice then was toimport burned dolomite in casks from England. It is reported that much of the material was powdered when received, but was still serviceable. The earliest. used sources of local stone were in the Bathurst and Mudgee areas of New South Wales, and these dolomites were first used raw. Later, dolomite was burned in cupolas at Havilah near Mudgee, coke being obtained from the South Coast of New South Wales. This plant supplied burned dolomite to the Lithgow steel plant, later to the Australil1n Iron and Steel plant at Port Kembla, and also to the electric steel furnaces at Newcastle, Sydney and Melbourne until the plant was closed down in 1946.The Broken Hill Proprietary Company first obtained its dolomite from George's Plains near Bathurst (this was, really a magnesium limestone) and later from Mount Knowles, a deposit near Mudgee, which was eventually taken over by the CO:plpany in 1918. Segregation studies in ternary systems of glass ballotini, iron ore and coke particles (with size range of 1-8 mm in each) in filling and emptying a laboratory size Paul Wurth hopper are described. In-bin segregation is shown to be a function of the position in the hopper, the nature of the material and the feed composition. The in-bin results are correlated by the equation C = C0k, where C and C0 are the size compositions (wt per cent) in the hopper and feed respectively, and k is an experimentally obtained segregation constant. The results of now pallern measurements show that material discharges from the hopper according to the sequence; core now - wall now - scaffold now, where the latter represents stagnant material at the hopper wall that discharges last. Size segregation in the discharge stream from the hopper is shown to be a function of in-bin segregation and hopper now pallern. A method of predicting discharge segregation from these two sets of data is suggested. The results of the model studies are also compared with industrial data and these show satisfactory agreement. Discussion of the hitherto ignored effect of size segregation on hopper now rates, stoppages and other operating problems is also included.

The Clermont Goldfield, from which about 300,000 oz of bullion have been extracted, was one of the major gold producers in Queensland. This paper is derived from a systematic study of the mineralogy, geochemistry, and stable isotope geochemistry of the deposit, based on detailed field work and logging of 57 reverse-circulation percussion drilling holes at the Black Ridge Gold Deposit (Fig 1), aimed at addressing the long debated question of gold-ore genesis at Clermont, i.e., whether it is of fossil placer or hydrothermal origin.Detailed petrologic and mineralogical studies indicate the hydrothermal alteration at Black Ridge is dominated by extensive siderite (+rhodochrosite-ankerite) veinlets and stockworks, which are concentrated along the deformed unconformity between the Anakie Metamorphics and basal conglomerates of the early Permian Blair Athol Coal Measures. Siderite alteration is also moderately developed in all other rock units represented at Black Ridge, including the Tertiary basalt. Weak to moderate phyllosilicate alteration is common throughout the deposit, including chlorite-sericite along the shear zone of the unconformity, and sericite-clay in the conglomerates. A sulphide-oxides zonation also has occurred, including pyrite below the unconformity, (pyrite)-chalcopyrite-marcasite-(hematite) along the deformed unconformity, and marcasite (hematite, pyrite) in the conglomerates.

The specification for tender nominated the requirements for ore hoisting and servicing; this showed that one common duty winder could be selected. Foliowing the design of the shaft layout, the merits of fixed or rope guides were compared and the latter selected.The specification called for the supply and installation of the complete hoisting system. Construction of the winder tower and shaft bottom steel work had to proceed while mine development was in progress using the sinking winder and headframe. Guide ropes, winder ropes, and the sky shaft were installed in the shortest possible time, and as the shaft was not equipped with ladder-ways, a second means of access had to be provided.Very few problems were encountered witll the commissioning of the winder, and in the first 2 years of operation the only significant modification was to the circuitry associated witll the moving access platforms.Hoist rope tension checking and adjustment are simple, and non-destructive testing has shown no deterioration of these ropes. The operation of the balance ropes has been very satisfactory but cleaning presented problems in the early stages. Guide ropes have been trouble free and require minimum attention.Normal wear on the PVC rope groove inserts on the winder drum has been negligible.Since the commissioning on fully automatic ·control, the winder has operated with very few, minor delays.

A series of laboratory flotation tests were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of various depressants as arsenic (and zinc) depressants in the lead cleaner stage of the NBHC mill at Broken Hill. The depressants used included potassium cyanide, ferrous sulphate, sodium hypochlorite, potassium ferricyanide and two Cyanamid commerical depressants, Aerodepressants 610 and 633. A standard roughing stage was completed before the addition of the reagents in the cleaning stage. All reagents tested produced significant arsenic depression, with the best results being obtained with the addition of potassium cyanide and sodium hypochlorite. Some of the depressants activated the zinc in the process of arsenic depression. The best result was obtained with the addition of 90 g/t potassium cyanide at a pH of 10 when arsenic recovery was only 1/4 that of the value obtained for the standard test.

The Toguraci low sulfidation epithermal gold vein deposits are located 2 km WSW from the Gosowong mine and form part of the Gosowong Goldfield. The goldfield lies within a Neogene magmatic arc on Halmahera Island, North Maluku Province, East Indonesia. The terrain is moderate to steep, rainforested, and poorly outcropping. Exploration and mining operations are being carried out within the PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals Contract of Work (exploration tenement) jointly owned by Newcrest Mining Ltd (82.5 per cent, operator) and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk. (17.5 per cent). First pass exploration of the Gosowong area began late 1992 resulting in the discovery of weakly developed porphyry copper mineralisation (named Bora) at Toguraci in 1993. Early in the evaluation of this porphyry an overprinting epithermal Au/Ag mineralisation event was recognised, however exploration focus remained on the Bora porphyry deposit for some time. The discovery of the nearby Gosowong epithermal gold deposit and the exploration of other prospects in the area further diverted attention and funds from Toguraci. It was not until year 2000 that Toguraci was seriously reevaluated as part of a detailed appraisal of the epithermal gold potential within a 5 km radius of the Gosowong gold mine. A fly-camp based drilling campaign using man-portable rigs was undertaken between August 2000 and March 2002. All exploration at Toguraci was then stopped pending government approvals to mine. These were finally issued in May 2003 and immediately drilling restarted and pre-mine approvals (eg the environmental impact study) were sought and granted. The first Toguraci gold bar was poured in February 2004. Exploration at Toguraci and elsewhere in the Gosowong Goldfield continues today.

In south-eastern King Island, sediments and lavas of possible Upper Proterozoic to Lower Cambrian age have been intruded by Lower Carboniferous granitic rocks.Within the contact aureole of the Bold Head adamellite north of Grassy the sediments and lavas have been metamorphosed to hornblende hornfels facies grade. The thermal gradient within the contact aureole was small, as the hornfelses exhibit no mineral zoning over a distance of 700 ft from the adamellite.Skarns occur both within the adamellite near its contact with the country rocks, and within the country rocks as partial replacements of three dolomitic limestone horizons. The latter type, the exoskarns, commonly have an andradite-salite mineralogy and carry economic concentrations of scheelite. These resulted from the replacement of carbonate beds due to both diffusion and infiltration metasomatism. Silica, tungsten, minor sulphides, and water were introduced from the adamellite, while aluminium and iron diffused from the enclosing pelitic sediments. Calcium released during marble replacement countered the loss of iron and aluminium in the pelitic hornfelses transforming them to diopside-rich rocks.Endoskarns within the adamellite are the result of two way diffusion across the contact; calcium, aluminium, and iron diffused from sediment to adamellite as silica, potassium, sodium, and water diffused from adamellite to the sediments. From estimates of the lithostatic pressure and mole fraction of CO2, the mineral assemblages of the hornfelses imply that the temperature of metamorphism lay between 530° and 710°C. This temperature range is in good agreement with minimum temperatures, between 610° and 710°C, for the recrystallization of the marbles of the contact aureole, calculated from the determinations of the solid solution of the magnesite molecule in calcite.

Mixtures of ammonia and cyanide at low concentrations leach gold selectively from copper-gold ores. The effects of various reagent compositions on three different ore types containing between 0.3 - 1.5 per cent Cu are reported. It is shown that the results and optimum compositions vary according to the ore, which is attributed in part to the mineralogy and adsorption of solution species on the mineral surfaces. The solution chemistry of the Cu-NH3-CN system indicates that Cu(CN)a - and Cu(CN)3 species are involved in the leaching mechanism. Rotating disc studies on pure gold and copper are reported which show that the Cu(CN)32- species leach gold at about half the rate of CN but leach copper at the same rate. The presence of ammonia retards the leaching rate further. Mixtures of Cu(CN)a3- and NH3 effectively leach gold from Telfer tailing without leaching copper. The role of ammonia appears to be to control the precipitation of copper rather than the kinetics of leaching.

Bougainville copper concentrate was leached with a strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (SPKI) in a 5 per cent CO2 nitrogen atmosphere.Copper solubilization was 100 per cent in presence of bacteria and only 30 per cent in a sterile acid control medium.Anaerobic copper solubilization rates were one quarter of those measured under aerobic conditions and did not generate acidity.

To improve the existing process of a large-scale scheelite concentrator in Jiangxi Province, this paper presents an advanced process æselective flotation of copper and flotation desulfurisation û rougher flotation of scheelite û heating-stirring and cleaning of rougher concentrate at normal temperature without reagent removalÆ. The test work was conducted on an ore sample containing 0.75 per cent tungsten (WO3), and the following technical indices were obtained: 1.03 per cent of the scheelite concentrate yield, 65.37 per cent of the concentrate grade and 86.31 per cent of WO3 recovery, indicating that the study achieved the objective of improving the tungsten recovery. The technical key of this process is to employ combined regulators and direct flotation of the slurry after being heated, which not only assured the technical indicators of beneficiation but also simplified the process.

Whole rock geodhemical analyses from samples of Potosi gneiss within the Willyama Supergroup have been utilised to identify geochemical trends towards Pb/Zn ore positions. Although the analyses come from disparate sources they have been incorporated in the data base only if locational, sampling, analytical, lithological and stratigraphic descriptors were reliable. These data have been statistically analysed using programmes of the GASP software package. A discriminant function has been derived which permits Potosi gneiss associated with the Pb/Zn lode horizons in the Broken Hill domain to be distinguished from Potosi gneiss in a similar stratigraphic position in the Maybell Domain. In the "near ore" position the Potosi gneiss has significantly lower mean Na2O and significantly higher mean MnO. Also mean Rb, CaO and K20 are higher and mean Sr lower. This discriminant function serves to identify areas prospective for Pb/Zn mineralisation. A second discriminant function based on MnO, Si02 and K20/Na20 gives a semi- quantitative indication of proximity to ore.

Prior to 1975, most geochemical drainage surveys for gold were based on analyses for pathfinder elements, such as As and Cu, rather than direct analysis for gold, for two reasons. Firstly, analytical methods lacked the required sensitivity and precision to determine gold abundance at background levels in stream sediments (usually in the range 1 - 10 ppb). Direct analysis was also inhibited by concern about the potential for gross sampling error, brought about by the dispersion of gold as rare discrete particles of the extremely dense native metal. This sampling error, commonly termed the 'nugget effect' has two components: erratic distribution of the element within the stream environment, related to hydraulic factors, and the difficulty in taking representative samples, both in the field and later in sub-sampling for analysis. In more recent years the collection of very large samples was commonly advocated to overcome the sampling problem (Hams, 1982; Nichol, 1986).Two methods have been widely used to evaluate the gold content of bulk samples (Elliott and Towsey, 1989). The preparation and analysis of heavy mineral concentrates has in recent years been largely superseded by the leaching of gold contained in bulk samples by cyanide, commonly termed the BLEG (Bulk Leach Extractable Gold) or BCL (Bulk Cyanide Leach) methods. The terms BLEG and BCL are essentially interchangeable and the latter will be adopted for the remainder of this paper. From December 1994 to November 1997 Odin MiningÆs Estero Hondo alluvial gold mine in western Ecuador washed almost 3.2 million bank cubic metres of gravel to produce just over 2600 kilograms of pure gold at a recovered grade of about 0.8 grams per bank cubic metre. The operation was a simple open pit. Draglines stripped the overburden, backhoes mined the gravel, and trucks transported the ore to a stationary, gravity-based wash plant for processing. At start-up the planned throughput was 55 000 bank cubic metres/month, but a year later this had been increased to 100 000 bank cubic metres/month. From April 1993 to July 1997 a total of 440 churn drill holes and 15 pits were sunk to test the property. The methods used to prepare the resource and reserve estimates from the raw field data are described, and seven sets of completed estimates are used to track the evolution of the projectÆs resource/reserve base through the exploration, feasibility and production stages.

Intensive exploration of the Archaean ultra mafic sequence bordering the Kambalda dome has resulted in the discovery of at least ten dis- tinct areas of nickel sulphide mineralisation subsequent to the initial drill intersection in January, 1966. Sulphide ore reserves to June 30, 1972 were 19.36 million tonnes at 3.3% nickel after mining of 3.0 million tonnes at 3:7%,nickel since production commenced in March, 1967. About 75% of contained nickel metal reserves occur in sulphide concentrations located at the base of the-ultramafic sequence, in contact with underlying meta-tholeiitic basalt. The remaining reserve occurs in concentrations of sulphides within the ultramafic sequence, usually within 100 metres of the underlying contact and typically in proximity to contact mineralisation. These hanging wall orebodies are smaller, contain significantly lower con- centrations of sulphide, and generally exhibit higher Ni:S ratios than underlying contact ore- bodies. The majority of contact sulphides concentr- ations form narrow, elongate, north north-west trending bodies, closely coincident with fault bounded depressions in the contact. Detailed study of the Lunnon Shoot ore environment in- dicates that it was a locus of crustal failure during, and subsequent to, emplacement of ultra- mafic rocks. Resultant structures parallel and

Diamond drilling was first carried out at Norseman in the Princess Royal Mine, early in this century. Little concentl'ated drilling was done from then until Western Mining Corporation commenced drilling in 1934. Since then Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. has continually employed diamond drilling in exploration of the field. After 1946 the advantage was seen of applying broad pattern surface drilling at Norseman in the reef exploration. In 1953, as a result of the steeply rising cost of drilling and the time taken to penetrate surface material by light equipment, heavier drills and new rigs were introduced. The surface drilling programmes called for a greater monthly or annual footage and to satisfy this new techniques were introduced. The Mitchell-21 machines were discarded and A-3000 machines were installed, firstly under a 48 ft. fixed tower, then mounted on a truck with a 20 ft. tower, and finally on a truck carrying a 40 ft. tower. With the mobile units a compressed air compressor is attached. By use of compressed air with either the Reed roller or Hawthorne bit, rate of penetration of overburden is greatly increased. The mobility of the truck mounted machines has greatly reduced the time required to move from one hole to another, and the use of heavier machines on a three shift per day basis has considerably increased the footage per shift. The general result is an increase to 1,500 ft. of drilling per month per machine, while costs have been greatly reduced in spite of increased wages and diamond prices.The underground drilling technique is described. Analysis of performance has not been made because the drillers performance is subject to shaft routine and service.INTRODUCTIONGold was first discovered at Dundas in 1894, and at Norseman, 14 miles north, in 1895. From that tirpe until 1935 mining activity fluctuated. Following the mining revival in 1935, production in the field has remained comparatively stable. This stability in part has been due to the broader scale of operations of Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L., and in these operations diamond drilling has played an increasingly important role.

The conventional method of transporting mine tailings from a process plant to a tailings storage facility (TSF) is in the form of a low to medium density1 slurry, which can be pumped using centrifugal pumps. Over the past several decades, therefore, mine operators have generally adopted this default approach. There are, however, some convincing arguments why consideration should be given to thickening the tailings slurry to a higher density paste consistency. In particular, the minimisation of environmental impacts, the reduction in water consumption and the cost savings relating to TSF closure make paste an attractive option for the life of mine tailings disposal. There are several environmental impacts that are associated with a conventional slurry TSF, such as land sterilisation, aesthetics, dust, seepage and acid mine drainage. Some of these impacts, such as dusting, may be difficult to mitigate while the TSF is in operation. Others can be influenced by adjustments made to the tailings slurry density at the plant. Unplanned fluctuations in slurry density and/or viscosity can have a significant influence on TSF performance and can exacerbate the environmental impacts relating to the facility. Relatively minor changes in the solids content of the slurry can affect tailings beaching behaviour, degree of segregation, position of the phreatic surface, amount of freeboard, consolidation behaviour, placed (settled) density (and hence TSF capacity) and in situ strength of the tailings. Paste is a non segregating slurry and many of these effects can be minimised at the TSF when the tailings slurry is thickened to a paste. These improvements are manifested by reduced seepage, flexibility in selecting an appropriate final landform, ability to rehabilitate progressively and reductions in plant water usage. It is possible to minimise environmental impacts of a TSF through the use of tailings paste. Ideally the paste production plant should be part of the initial design of the process plant. However, significant benefits can be gained by adding a paste production plant at some time later in the operational life of the mine to reduce environmental impacts and facilitate an environmentally acceptable TSF closure.
