The Grasberg is a large copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and located in the high equatorial mountains of Papua Province, Indonesia. The climate is alpine/sub-alpine with little seasonal variation in temperature and rainfall. The annual precipitation varies from about 3000 to 5000 mm over short distances around the Grasberg, but in general, an average daily precipitation of 10 mm per day applies and leaching of the overburden is continuous throughout the year. Mining commenced in 1988, and almost all of the overburden mined up to 2003 was potentially acid forming. The current acid drainage from this overburden is being collected and treated. From 2004 to the end of the Grasberg pit operation in 2014, approximately 70 per cent of the overburden will be potentially acid forming and 30 per cent limestone. A program of laboratory leach columns, field test pads and an instrumented full-scale dump was developed with the objective of defining scale up factors to quantify the acid and metal leaching rates and to evaluate the stockpile geochemistry and control options. The results of an ongoing seven year program have demonstrated feasible scale up between laboratory columns, field test pads and the trial dump in relation to material geochemistry and ARD evolution trends at Grasberg. The potentially acid forming waste types are highly reactive and maximum acid generation rate occurs within two to three years and that maximum copper release occurs within one to two years of exposure. The results also show that the net acid generation (NAG) test provides a good estimate for the potential acid load from overburden types. The chemistry, temperature and oxygen data from the trial dump suggest that oxidation and acid generation is occurring throughout the dump but at a decreasing mass rate with increasing distance from the toe of the dump. It is apparent that convection and/or advection are important mechanisms for the transport of oxygen into and within the dump. Key results and findings of the investigations carried out are presented and the implications of the findings for long-term ARD management at the Grasberg mine are outlined.

In order to study conditions under which SiO(g) may be formed in a blast furnace, equilibrium phase diagrams were constructed for the combustion of high and low ash cokes with oxygen-enriched blast and oil injection under conditions of high and low raceway pressures. Free energy minimisation techniques were used to calculate the composition of gaseous and condensed phases. Where coke ash is assumed, for simplicity, to comprise Si02 only, the coke can be comple- tely gasified, mainly to SiO and CO, under restricted conditions of coke to blast ratio and at temperatures greater than 1600 - 1650¦C, depending on system pressure. The formation of SiO(g) is partially suppressed by the introduction of alumina into the ash, because of the formation of solid and liquid alumino- silicate compounds. The minimum temperature for complete silicon gasification is raised to about 1700¦C. The results of the equilibrium calcula- tions are related-to actual raceway conditions. It is proposed that virtually all silicon in the coke ash is gasified such that, on condensation, it affects hot metal chemistry and slag properties and secondly, that the effects will be greater with higher ash cokes.

This paper details a proposal for integrating the use of the Pilbara Iron Ore Classification (PIOC) and stratigraphic data for fine tuning blast. pattern design on Mt Whaleback. The main thrust of the proposal is based on the assertion from Haqan and Harries (1979) that rock properties influence blasting results more than explosive properties. This premise is supported by a literature search, which indicated that blasthole burden, spacing, stemming and subdepth lengths are also determined by rock properties if the same explosive and blasthole diameters are used. A brief explanation of the PIOC is provided during which it is noted that the classification is based on physical hardness, mineralogical and genetic characteristics of the ore. The classification also extends to the two main waste rock types LBIF (banded iron-formation) and shale]. Ore type plans produced from face mapping indicate that many areas on Mt Whaleback can be divided into various PIOC zones and regions thus making it more useful in blast pattern design. Several recommendations for blast pattern design experimentation are made for hard, medium and soft ores as well as for the waste rocks, the most important being the use of expanded patterns to blast. soft BIF and medium hard to soft shales.

Shortly after the outbreak of war in September, 1939, it became apparent that considerable quantities of certain metals and alloys which at that time were not being produced in Australia would be required in increasing amounts for the prosecution of the war effort.Australian industry had relied on overseas sources of supply for the relatively small quantities of many special metals which were needed under peacetime conditions. As the war progressed so great became the demand for mooy of these alloys in Great Britain and other allied countries that it was necessary for them to place an embargo on the export of these materials, and thus it soon became evident that if Australia's production of munitions was to expand and develop it would be necessary for her to become independent of overseas sources for many of these essential 'items. The shipping position also became very acute, and this, accentuated the difficulties of obtaining these alloys. Because of the conditions outlined aqove, the manufacture of over thirty different metals and alloys .was undertaken at Newcastle during the past decade. It is with two of these that this paper proposes to deal. They are tungsten powder and ferro-silicon.TUNGSTEN POWDERTungsten is a rare and comparatively new metal. It is used extensively in the production of high speed tool steel, some grades of which contain up to 22% tungsten. Such articles as twist drills, reamers, milling cutters, and lathe tools are made from tool steel, and the demand for these during the war years was greater than ever before. The use of tungsten in the manufacture of high speed steel was first developed in 1914 by the Germans, and when it was discovered that they were using tungsten bearing steel for the production of munitions there began a world-wide search for ores of this rare metal.

A simple method of designing effective fill drainage systems for slurry backfill is presented. By using the proposed method, it is easy to calculate and predict the expected fill drainage rates or to provide additional drainage systems to accelerate the fill drainage. The fundamentals of hydraulic fill and an efficient method to determine its permeability is also explained. The safety in hydraulic filling and bulkhead stability depends totally on achieving effective drainage regime for the fill. This paper provides the basis for creating such efficient drainage regimes. The recent fatal fill bulkhead failures in Australia were the result of poor drainage from the respective fill masses, and therefore it is more important to provide suitable drainage arrangements to continue using hydraulic fill to the benefit of the mining industry. At present there is no procedure available to mine operators to estimate the expected bulkhead pressures to design a satisfactory bulkhead. Some mines are constructing bulkheads after their initial investigations carried out years ago. Other mines have simply borrowed the ideas from the pioneer mines and using in their areas. It is high time that we develop a rational approach to estimate the expected bulkhead pressures for the design of bulkheads. We need a simple model that could be understood and used by the mine operators on a day-to-day basis. This paper also presents a model to predict the bulkhead pressures for designing safe bulkheads.

Low-grade, porphyry copper type mineralization at the Moonmera prospect is related to the intrusion of a granodiorite porphyry mass into the Upper Permian "Gracemere granodiorite". Significant copper mineraliza- tion appears to be associated with the alteration assemblage quartz-sericite- kaolinite. The ore shell is surrounded by a zone where montmorillonite and kaolinite are in greater abundance and this assemblage is over- lapped, mainly at depth, by potassium feldspar alteration. Secondary biotite is abundant throughout the mineralized zone. Preliminary sulphur isotope results on the sulphide mineralization are compatible with a magmatic origin for the sulphur.

Radioisotope X-ray and neutron techniques of analysis can be used for the determination of a wide range of elements in minerals. The most important applications of these techniques to the mineral industry are for on-stream analysis of slurries and solids, and for geological assay. The radioisotope X-ray techniques are the more developed ones and two installations for on-stream analysis are in routine use in mineral processing plants in Australia. Neutron techniques are being developed, and should prove valuable for geological assay of large numbers of mineral samples, for borehole logging, and for specific on-stream analysis when the cost of the equipment is warranted.

The Dampier Port Upgrade was completed in 2007 and is the largest project in Rio Tinto Iron Ore's expansion program. The project doubled Dampier Port's iron ore shipping capacity over a five year period. Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) was appointed by Rio Tinto as the Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) contractor to manage Phase A and Phase B of the Dampier Port Upgrade. The aim of the project was to increase the Dampier Port capacity from 74 to 140 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a). This increase in shipping capacity tripled the capacity of the Parker Point facility from 34 to 94 Mt/a, whilst the East Intercourse Island facility increased from 40 to 46 Mt/a. The Dampier port remained fully operational throughout construction and achieved record yearly export tonnages over the period of the project. The $US1.4B project was completed ahead of schedule, on budget and with an outstanding safety record. Significantly the project team set an industry benchmark by achieving five million man-hours Lost Time Injury (LTI) free. The project has been recognised by the Engineers Australia 2008 Western Australian Engineering Excellence awards as category winner in resources and the overall winner in WA, and went on to win a National Engineering Excellence award. This paper provides an overview of the EPCM project management and an insight into some of the key drivers that have delivered this outstanding project.

Many gold deposits were mineralised by fluids and processes that also altered the host rocks. This alteration may often be a useful visual aid that distinguishes barren, low-grade from high-grade regions in a rock mass. Alteration intensity is commonly used in gold deposits as a visual tool, along with face sampling or grade control support, to define oreblocks and guide excavation in underground and open pit mining. However, alteration is not often used at the resource estimation stage. Mineralised lodes are usually defined by geologists using a ægeo-grade envelopeÆ, where a number of constraints are considered, including an (arbitrary) cut-off grade; the ænaturalÆ grade break between high- and low-grades; and geological features including structural, lithological or alteration continuity. The geo-grade envelope is usually thought to satisfy the requirements of stationarity for grade estimation, and is considered a single domain. This paper examines a modelling technique combining gold grade and alteration, applied to the Wallaby deposit in Western Australia, to imbue a greater level of detail to the grade estimation in a region tested by relatively sparse drilling. This was achieved by utilising the correlation of gold grade and alteration, along with the spatial characteristics of the alteration, when estimating grades within a number of lodes. The alteration-driven estimation was utilised in conjunction with an unfolding approach, and the use of probability estimates, to overcome geometric data constraints. This technique allows greater control and most likely provides a more reliable estimate of the mineable resources than a global grade cut-off when visual control is to be a major vector in grade control.

Recent research has highlighted the potential of a relatively new style of gold mineralisation related to granite intrusion. New discoveries in Alaska, Central Europe and Asia and Eastern Australia with total resources of 1600 t Au offer attractive targets for regional exploration in areas which may have been overlooked in the past. A spatial information system was developed to target granite-gold systems in eastern Australia and the West coast of New Zealand, using well constrained geological and exploration models derived from current research. Target areas were recognised in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand that have similar spatial data relationships to known granite gold mineralisation elsewhere in the world. The second phase of the modelling better constrained the regional scale target areas by including more detailed geological, geochemical and geophysical data in the GIS to develop prospect-scale targets and to allow the acquisition of tenements over these areas. A geological review of each target area was carried out in the field to put the GIS models into context. The fieldwork has highlighted the potential for this style of mineralisation in New Zealand and will increase investment in mineral exploration and development in New Zealand in the near future.

A substantial cost is invested into the data collection phase of any exploration or development program; notwithstanding, it is impractical to expect a database of information can be collated to ensure a perfect geological interpretation. The question then becomes, is there a possible alternative interpretation and what is the likely impact of the variations? Modelling in 2005, of the Cosmo lode at Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, Western Australia led to consideration of the philosophical implications associated with resource management. It was concluded that several plausible geological models could be constructed from the known geological database. To varying degrees, this predicament is common to all geological reconstructions, as several alternative geological models can be generated at almost any stage that will impact on the resultant resource estimation and mine plan. The significance of that variation and the associated risk of multiple geological models (MGMs) requires due consideration. What is being suggested is that using plausible multiple geological models advances the holistic understanding of a mineral deposit within the bounds of the data collected, providing fluidity for updating geological knowledge and building inherent variability into the design and planning departments where variations of the geological models may materially impact on the resource performance.

The satisfactory testing and characterisation of mineralisation amenable to heap leaching, is of prime importance to successful operation of a project. This paper outlines a methodology for assessing material suitability. A general model is used for classing material types for suitability for treatment and for economic analysis. The four levels of these are overburden, oxide, transitional and unoxidised materials. During exploration, reverse circulation (RC) drilling can be used effectively to define these zones by a combination of logging, analysis and provision of cuttings for column leach and bottle roll trials. RC cuttings can he used effectively for column leach trials, when calibrated against conventional processing-sized samples, obtained from surface. Tbis allows metallurgical testing to depth and definition of transitional ore types and the base of oxidation, accurately and economically with an acceptable density of samples. The accurate prediction of base of oxidation and variations in recovery with depth and ore types can be used to develop 'economic' pit designs with zones of variable recovery. Petrological studies of leaching results and examination of mineralisation types carried out on concentrates, provide information on gold distribution and physical and chemical constraints. The examination of concentrates can be particularly useful for types of mineralisation when overall gold content is frequently at or below one pan per million. Explanation of anomalous recovery of gold grains in dense goethite and solution-robbing by carbonaceous material can be identified by use of petrological and scanning electron microscope. An understanding of the role of the host rock in leaching characteristics can also he provided by petrology where siliceous or clayey materials can require significantly different treatment.

Lead blast furnace slags contain typically 10 - 20 mass per cent Zn. The zinc can be recovered by slag fuming, in which a powdered coal/air mixture is injected into a molten slag bath. Volatilised zinc is recovered as zinc oxide from the gas and processed hydrometallurgically to produce zinc metal. The ISASMELT continuous lead smelting process in operation at Mt Isa produces a slag containing about 12 per cent Zn which is currently granulated and stockpiled. This slag could flow to a further bath-smelting reactor for continuous zinc fuming. Rather than collecting the zinc as fume from such a process, one option would be to recover it using a lead splash condenser. The success of this operation would depend on the composition of the gas produced, in particular the concentrations of gases capable of reoxidising zinc vapour, viz, carbon dioxide and water vapour. The aim of this investigation was to determine the smelting conditions for a bath-smelting process such as ISASMELT or SIROSMELT which would produce a gas similar in composition to that from an Imperial Smelting Furnace by thermodynamic modelling of the process using the CSIRO Thermochemistry System. It was found that such a gas could be produced if coal injection and oxygen enrichment of the combustion air to at least 40 per cent 02 were used. However, the off-take gases must be conditioned by addition of methane to reduce the water vapour content to acceptable levels. An addition rate of ten per cent of the off-gas flowrate was found to be adequate. Addition of methane to the off-gas had the added advantage of cooling the gas from the bath temperature to a temperature suitable for normal lead splash condenser operation.

Forty two new apatite and zircon fission track analyses on the Kubor-Marum-Bena Bena area of northern Papua New Guinea severely constrain the timing of tectonic events and hence the tectonic models for New Guinea, particularly arc-continent collision. In addition, the data can be analysed regionally in terms of known and assumed lithospheric fault zones inferred to control mineralisation (eg. Corbett 1994; Kendrick et al 1995; Hill et al 1996) to determine reactivation of these zones. When combined with the new kinematic plate models for the evolution of New Guinea (Hall 1997) there is the potential to predict likely zones of mineralisation. The low-medium grade? Palaeozoic rocks of the Bena Bena terrane yielded a zircon fission track age of 17 Ma, indicating the time of cooling below 200¦C. The age is consistent with `the shift, at about 16-18 Ma, from volcanolithic sediments to mixed provenance sediments rich in quartz and metasedimentary lithic fragments in the southern Finisterre Ranges (Abbott et al. 1994). This shift was recorded in the Sukurum Formation, which ranges in age from Middle Miocene to Pliocene with quartzose and metasedimentary grains in all samples. Although recording rocks at temperatures of 200¦C and hence depths of ---5km, the 17 Ma age suggests the Bena Dena terrane was rapidly cooling at that time due to uplift and erosion, supplying metasediments to the southern flank of the Finisterre Range, currently 100 km to the east. Significantly, the Middle Miocene Akuna Intrusive Complex, dated 14-17 Ma by Page (1976), lies almost entirely within or adjacent to the Bena Bena terrane. Potentially the uplift, erosion and cooling of the terrane at 17 Ma may have been caused by the rising plutons. If so the 800 sq km exposure Akuna Intrusive Complex at the SE end of the Bena Bena terrane may have been the focus of uplift and supplied the metasedimentary detritus to the Finisterre Range. This suggests that the Finisterre Range was not far removed from the Bena Bena terrane, perhaps less than the 200 - 400 km indicated by Abbott et al (1984). The Akuna Intrusive Complex probably resulted from subduction of the Solomon Sea Plate beneath the PNG margin. In order for the subducted slab to reach depths of -100km below the area to facilitate partial melting and plutonism (Hamilton 1994), subduction probably commenced 3-5 Ma Ma before plutonism, ie at or prior to 20 Ma suggesting a significant change in the tectonic regime at -20 Ma, perhaps related to collision of the Solomons - Ontong Java Plateau collision (eg. Hall 1997). The main result to emerge from the 28 apatite fission track analyses is that the whole of the study area underwent rapid cooling due to uplift and denudation in the Late Miocene, mainly between 7-10 Ma. Results from several samples indicate that they were not totally overprinted prior to uplift indicating maximum burial of -3 km in the Middle Miocene, assuming normal temperature gradients. The burial is less if higher gradients are assumed, allowing for Middle Miocene plutonism. The Late Miocene cooling in the Mobile Belt agrees well with the Pliocene to Recent cooling in the Fold Belt to the SW, interpreted to be due to uplift and erosion associated with fold and thrust deformation of the Miocene Limestones (Hill & Gleadow 1989). This timing relationship suggests, that compressional deformation in the Mobile Belt occurred in the Late Miocene, at 105 Ma, and that the deformation migrated towards the undeformed foreland in the southwest in the Pliocene, at 5-2 Ma. The regional Late Miocene uplift and denudation in the Mobile Belt is also consistent with that postulated by Crowhurst et al (1996; 1997) for northwest PNG, although they considered the event to have occurred mainly from 8-5 Ma. If so, then the uplift and denudation may have been migrating from east to west as well as to the south into the Fold Belt. These timing relationships place significant constraints on tectonic models for the area, indicating that the major compressional pulse in PNG commenced in the northeast at -10 Ma and migrated to the southwest and west in the latest Miocene to Pliocene. This suggests that the initial arc-continent collision and associated shortening occurred in the Late Miocene around -10-12 Ma. This immediately followed intrusion and cooling of the Akuna Intrusive Complex at -17-14 Ma and the Bismarck Intrusive Complex at -12.5 Ma (Page 1976), indicating a linkage between the end of plutonism and the start of compressional deformation. The timing is consistent with the observation of Hamilton (1994) that in areas of subduction `the common regime in overriding plates is extensional and leading edges are crumpled only in collisions. This suggests that the Middle Miocene magmatism in northern New Guinea occurred during extension above a subducting slab and was terminated by Late Miocene arc collision and resultant compression commencing at -10-12 Ma. In general, these data indicate that the acme of denudation and cooling in the Mobile Belt was in the Late Miocene, with relatively little denudation there since. In contrast, Hill & Gleadow (1989) found that the peak of denudation in basement outcrops in the Fold Belt was in the Pliocene at -4 Ma. Iron ore tailings typically containing 40 to 50 per cent Fe can be beneficiated to iron ore products containing 54 to 60 per cent Fe. The impurities are comprised of clay, quartz, cristabolite and TiO2. Goethite and hematite are also present. At high concentrations of 55–60 wt% solids, the tailings displayed high yield stress and viscosity and cannot be pumped over long distances. Composite additives comprising of NaOH, phosphate-based additives and sodium metasilicate are found to reduce the viscosity and yield stress very significantly by a few orders of magnitude. The yield stress of 100 Pa can be reduced to almost zero. At this state, dilution of the tailings with its process water to 40 per cent solids causes the coarse and high-density iron ore particles to separate from the colloidal fractions located in the supernatant after a few minutes of sedimentation. Separation by decantation produces a sediment with an Fe content of 54 per cent from tailings with 47 per cent Fe. Another tailings sample with 48 per cent Fe was beneficiated to greater than 57 per cent Fe using NaOH-metasilicate-polyphosphate additives and employing an additional washing step. The use of other composite additives, NaOH and polyphosphates, increased beneficiated product Fe content to greater than 60 per cent from the same tailings. With the current iron ore spot price of more than US$180 per tonne, the cost of this treatment process even including a desalination step, if necessary, is relatively insignificant. This study has given tailings an economic value that should be exploited as soon as possible.

Photoelastic and equivalent material model ling techniques for studying stresses and defor- mations and modes of failure in geological and engineering structures are described. The appli- cation of these techniques to the solution of tunnelling design problems is outlined. Models may contain heterogeneous components to simulate geological and man-made structures and may be two- or three-dimensional. Prototype construc- tion procedures and time dependent behaviour may be modelled. Examples of recent model studies carried out for the design of underground railway tunnels are given. Development of photoelastic and equi- valent material modelling techniques and facili- ties at the CSIRO, Division of Applied Geomech- anics are described, including a biaxial and triaxial frame for testing large scale two and three dimensional equivalent material models and components of full scale prototype structures.

The use of stable isotopic measurements as a technique for elucidating the origin and history of the water in hydrothermal fluids is relatively new. Recent studies have emphasized the importance of meteoric water in the formation of many hydrothermal ore deposits including many epithermal gold-base metal deposits which occur in faulted volcanic terrane. Other vein-type gold ores are be- lieved to have formed from fluids of magmatic or metamorphic origin and exhibit characteri stic 6180 values. These values also give information regarding temperatures and the degree of equilibrium. Preliminary oxygen data for some important gold deposits of eastern Australia are evaluated in the con- text of styles of mineralization.

Perhaps no aspect of the investigation of an ore-deposit is of greater importance to the mining geologist and engineer than a consideration of its geological structure. A thorough understanding of the type, size, shape, and arrangement of any ore-body is essential to the proper conduct of exploratory, developmental, and mining, operations. Significant as these remarks are' in relationship to ore-deposits in general, they become of paramount moment when a complex structure such as the Broken Hill Lode is in question. In this connection the use of the term "lode" as applied to the Broken Hill ore-bodies may terid to confusion of ideas among those not familiar with the field or with the literature pertaining thereto, by reason of the fact that it is generally understood that a "lode" is characterised by simple, tabular form, regular outline, defined walls, and persistent attitude. However, as the terminology is well established by common usage, itsretention appears desirable, and, for the purpose of this paper, the name "The Broken Hill Lode" refers to that complex unit which includes pre-eminently the famous ore-bodies exposed in the workings from the North Mine on the one extreme to the South Blocks (Zinc Corporation) Mine on the other.That the practical value of geological investigation, of the ore-bodies was realised by the Geological Sub-Committee of the late Scientific Society of Broken Hill is attested by the...

Natural gas from the south west Queensland gas fields is now available in north west Queensland to fuel the development of many Carpentaria Mineral Province projects. Like these projects, the south west Queensland gas project, developed under the operatorship of Santos Ltd, has its own æMining CycleÆ. While the project is entering its third expansion phase, it is at the same time actively extending its discovery phase, with large programs of gas exploration and reserves definition. This paper outlines the history of the south west Queensland gas project, with particular emphasis on the relationship of the project to north west Queensland.

The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is a society of engineers and scientists formed in 1893 (incorporated by Royal Charter in 1955) to advance science and engineering in the mineral industries, and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas to enhance the professional excellence of its members. The Institute has several grades of members. The professional members are linked with Student and Company Members, as well as an Affiliate grade covering other professionals and non-professionals with experience in the mineral industry. The diverse group covers all sections of the mineral industry, from exploration through production to marketing of minerals and petroleum. Corporate (professional) membership also covers science and engineering professionals from specialisms other than the "traditional" ones in geosciences, mining and petroleum engineering and metallurgy. The Institute has Branches throughout Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Oceania, whose activities complement the corporate occasions arranged for the benefit of all members by Headquarters in Melbourne. Members are drawn from all sections of the industry - private enterprise, government, research, education, and the support sector, including consultancies, manufacturers and suppliers. Membership of The Institute allows professionals to contribute to their profession through participation in The Institute's seminars and conferences, its many committees and Branch meetings, and through contribution to its many high standard publications. The Institute is the main body for the accreditation of professionals in the minerals industry. The activities of The Institute are directed towards the achievement of professional excellence.
