The increasing need for alternative energy sources as well as the less clearly perceived but equally increasing demand for non-fuel minerals has resulted in extensive exploitation of near surface deposits. Many such deposits have depleted reserves and mining corporations are increasingly turning their attention to deposits, with thicker overburden, less competent materials, steeper dips and more complex structure. These deposits pose mine layout, geotechnical and equipment problems as well as the need for large outputs to achieve economies of scale. The paper describes the major problems and operational solutions for such deposits using continuous excavation and transport equipment.

Multi-sensor fusion visual perception technology significantly enhances visual perception capabilities in complex and harsh environments by combining visual data from different sensors. This technology is especially useful for scenarios where traditional single visible light sensors, such as standard cameras, struggle due to poor lighting, adverse visual conditions, or other visual obstructions. In environments with low light, smoke, or dust, the performance of conventional visible light sensors degrades, limiting their application. By integrating data from various sensors like radar, infrared thermal imaging, and others, multi-sensor fusion technology provides a more comprehensive and complementary visual solution. This fusion not only enhances the robustness of visual systems but also greatly expands their potential applications in fields like visual surveillance. In recent years, deep learning methods have become the mainstream technology for addressing multi-sensor fusion issues, demonstrating significant advantages in adaptive feature selection compared to traditional machine learning methods. However, deep learning-based multi-sensor fusion algorithms still face several challenges. The design of network structures is often redundant, lacking effective screening of useful components within multimodal information. Mainstream fusion algorithms focus excessively on improving display effects without adequately considering the needs of downstream applications and tasks. Existing fusion perception algorithms are generally designed for open visual scenes and lack targeted design for complex visual degradation factors present in tunnel environments of mines. Current deep learning methods for designing multi-sensor fusion networks heavily rely on manual experience to create fusion modules. This reliance increases the complexity of network design and can lead to redundancy. Redundant network modules are difficult to identify in end-to-end learning tasks at this stage, significantly slowing down network inference and potentially interfering with the output of fusion perception. Additionally, training these fusion modules typically requires large amounts of well-annotated multimodal data, further increasing implementation difficulty and cost. For instance, the fusion network design proposed by Li and Wu (2018) focuses on extracting multimodal fusion features, while Zhao et al (2020) introduced a feature decomposition mechanism in the feature fusion and extraction modules. Researchers like Zhang and Ma (2021), Xu et al (2020), and Liu et al (2017) have attempted to improve network structures through dense cascades and the introduction of residual connections. Although these methods have improved the handling of multimodal information to some extent, they still face limitations in distinguishing between useful and redundant information, with redundancy persisting in network designs. Ideally, the design of fusion networks should be more intelligent, guiding network structure design heuristically based on the importance of different modal information for the current task. This would reduce information redundancy and network weights, requiring the development of new algorithms or frameworks capable of automatically identifying and optimising fusion strategies, thereby reducing dependence on manual experience while improving fusion efficiency and network performance. The Snap Lake Phase I project initiated a subsampling campaign on the material (kimberlite/metavolcanic/granite) mined and treated for diamonds. The campaign was aimed at determining the optimum subsampling program to subsample the feed to the bulk sample plant (BSP) for the duration of a sampling campaign. This paper describes the application of GyÆs formula for determining the subsample size and other good sampling practices to determine this subsampling campaign. Three main issues are discussed: the use of a hammer sampler to sample off a moving conveyor and the practical experiment to determine the optimum subsampling program; bias introduced by laboratory equipment including two sizes rotary splitters; and variability of the feed material to the BSP over time.

Most orebodies have one or more boundaries which are gradational, where the decision to stop mining is based on an economic cut-off. To maximise profit, this cut-off grade must be chosen correctly. It is necessary to review cut-off grades regularly, as the optimum cut-off grade changes with time, and major changes are hard to implement in a working mine without disruption to production schedules.Whenever a cut-off grade is used, there will be errors in its application caused by errors in the estimation of block grade. These can be minimised by stringent quality control in sampling and by the use of kriging, which attempts to minimise the absolute errors in grade estimation. The kriging method used should produce the most accurate estimates of marginal grade blocks - this will not necessarily be the technique that gives the best overall prediction of head grades.

This paper addresses; land use, rehabilitation and the State/Federal regulatory process, in light of Australia signing various international conventions and agreements in the area of environmental protection. The conventions on biological diversity, climate change and the implications of the Rio and Agenda 21 declarations are examined. The implementation of these initiatives through the Inter-Governmental Agreement on the Environment, and through legistlative mechanisms at Federal and State level is explored.Particular attention is given to the biodiversity strategy in context of the need to integrate economic aspirations and environmental concerns as a basis for sustsainable development. The paper concludes with a brief comparison of the major approval processes in each State, relating to mining environmental issues.

Plutonic Resources Limited (formerly known as Pioneer Mineral Exploration Limited) delineated, developed and operates the Plutonic Gold Mine located 180 kms northeast of Meekatharra, Western Australia. Gold mineralisation was discovered in the Marymia greenstone belt by Great Central Mines NL (GCM) in 1988. There was no previous, recorded gold mining activity in the area. In May 1989, Plutonic Resources Limited (PRL) entered into an agreement to acquire a 51 per cent interest in the three Mining Leases containing the Plutonic deposit from GCM. Subsequently in December 1989, PRL acquired the remaining 49 per cent interest in the Mining Leases. PRL and GCM are also involved in a 51:49 regional joint venture on extensive Exploration Licences in the vicinity of the Mining Leases. Following due diligence validation, reserve delineation and testwork, a feasibility study was undertaken in conjunction with JR Engineering Services, which led to the financing and development of the project for operation in August 1990.

This in turn increases the focus on costs.Increasing demands on quality and service puts pressure on delivery performance - the right product at the right time. This in turn reduces the scope for errors and delays - and this in turn increases focus on equipment reliability. In the mining industry, both costs and equipment reliability have one significant thing in common - they are driven substantially by maintenance.

Over the last year at Clarabelle Mill, three circuit reconfigurations were implemented. One circuit reconfiguration, æA CleaningÆ, was initiated due to a furnace failure at the smelter complex, and two of the circuit reconfigurations, æincreased copper (Cu) separationÆ and the æInterim IsaMillÖ circuitÆ, were seen as opportunities to increase cash flow through the mill. A Cleaning and the Interim IsaMillÖ circuit took advantage of engineering design already completed for a major capital project. The engineering for each was modified, as needed, and construction of the required portions of the capital project was fast tracked. The increased Cu separation circuit change used existing test and plant equipment to increase the plant Cu concentrate production. Implementation of the projects required teams that included operations, maintenance, technical support, project management and capital project resources. This paper discusses the business reasons driving the changes and the forethought or synergies with other work, which made them a success, and what was learned through each project. The prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium has been reported by Denny, Robson, and Irwin in two papers. The first was published in 1937; the second, in 1939. The results definitely established that silicosis was prevented in animals by the inhalation of small quantities of aluminium. The present communication records subsequent progress in this field of research.

The City of KalgoorlieBoulder is situated approximately 600 kilometres to the east of Perth, and as the major regional centre of the Eastern Goldfields, supporting a population of approximately 25 000. The formation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines in 1989 brought the existing operating entities adjacent to the city under common ownership and management. The Joint Venturers forming the management company are Homestake Gold of Australia and Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (a Normandy/Poseidon company).This traditional underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding 40.5 million ounces of gold ore with an average head grade of TEN grams per tonne. Historically the heart of the operation has been the famous Golden We located on the Eastern perimeter of the city, in the area known as Fimiston. The other significant operations that form KCGM are the Mt Percy Open Pit and the Mt Charlotte Underground Operation.

During the design of a new production facility for a greenfields or significant brownfields expansion many design decisions are made driven by an unquestioning objective to achieve 'lowest cash-cost' production costs. In many cases this translates to a design and operating philosophy based on largest-available, single-line equipment. Although acknowledged as an approach that is efficient from an operating cost perspective does this approach always maximise shareholder value? There is an increasing awareness in the mining industry of the value of project flexibility, robustness and value options. The design of a new production facility creates a window of opportunity which should be structured to ensure that project value options and robustness are understood and exploited. This requires the use of emerging valuation methodologies, such as Value-at-Risk and Real Options, as well as tried and trusted NPV/IRR approaches. The paper provides an overview of the basis and application of these less well known techniques in the context of metallurgical plant design. Design guidelines that demonstrate how value options and flexibility can be quantified from both a risk and value perspective are presented. Issues such as use of single versus multiple line equipment, optimum cut-off grade and improved exploitation of the inherent variability of the orebody are also examined. Finally the management issues and approaches to achieving this will be briefly discussed; for example it is common during project development to drive towards increasing certainty as rapidly as possible to facilitate 'accurate' estimation of costs. Understanding and exploiting value options requires a project culture that tolerates, and revels in, ambiguity and uncertainty û something that would make many project teams uncomfortable!

A new process has been developed to remove the impurities copper, cadmium, cobalt and nickel from a zinc plant electrolyte by cementation on zinc dust. The process has been tested in the laboratory and in a continuously operated pilot plant. It has been found that cadmium, in the presence of small amounts of antimony in solution, assists the removal of cobalt. Cementation is conducted in two stages: the first stage for removal of copper with a small excess of zinc dust to produce a relatively high grade product, the second stage for removal of cadmium, cobalt and nickel by addition of zinc dust in the presence of anti- mony. The excess zinc and the cadmium present in the second stage cementate can be selective- ly recovered by slow leaching in spent electrolyte. Zinc dust processes in use elsewhere are described and compared with the present system for use in the Risdon circuit.

Particles finer than 10 um often cause problems in flotation. The current under- standing of the nature of the following effects is discussed: slime coatings on particles, carrier flotation, increased froth stability, entrainment of ultrafine gangue, excess reagent consumption, slower rate of flotation, more reactive surfaces. The review emphasizes the principles underlying these effects rather than details of progress in practical solutions to the problems they cause. The princi- ples of selective flocculation and floc flotation and the various approaches to achieving selectivity are discussed. Hydrodynamic effects on floc growth are reviewed. The evidence suggests that satisfactory performance in the ultrafines fraction will be achieved only by simul- taneously increasing the rate of flotation of the ultrafine valuable mineral and de- creasing the rate of entrainment of ultra- fine gangue.

Mining of copper ore at Mount Lyell has been continuous since 1893. The operation has always been marginal and the depressed copper Market over the last decade has seen mining continue on the basis of a series of short term plans. In 1985 it was determined that the mine would close in 1989 on completion of the 40 Series mining block. Significant changes in the value of the Australian dollar in 1986 and the subsequent effect on profitability dictated a review of the Company's operations. Lower level ore reserves, mining methods and ore handling systems were re-examined and a plan proposed for mining of the 50 and 60 Series mining blocks. The improved economics of this plan, together with workforce and State Government initiatives resulted in an extension of mine life to 1994.

In the Bayer process, bauxite is leached with caustic soda, forming a solution of sodium aluminate, from which hydrated alumina is precipitated. The efficient operation of the continuous form of this process requires that the concentration of caustic soda be controlled. A computer simulation of the concentration of caustic soda has been conducted to provide information, regarding the dynamic behaviour of caustic concentration, which is not available from normal plant data. The basis of the simulation is a state- space model of an alumina refinery, linearized about the normal operating condition. The formulation of the model, with the relevant approximations and assumptions, is outlined. The simulation of the mudwash section of the. plant is described in detail. A continuous model of the mudwash, having time-varying coefficients, was driven using operating data from an alumina refinery. The modelled response showed reasonable agreement with the recorded plant response.

Overburden removal, mining and reclamation are now accepted as the basic operational steps involved in the winning of coal by open cut methods. To attain the lowest operational cost, the recontouring and revegetation of spoilpiles must be planned concurrently with the planning of overburden removal and mining. The earthworks associated with reclamation work on spoilpiles often account for 75 - 90 per cent of total reclamation costs. Experience at Callide Mine has shown that the way that spoilpiles are contoured does influence water retention and can reduce erosion from rainfall run-off. However, provided the recontoured slopes meet'Mines Department specifications, the quality of reclamation work is judged not by the quality of the earthworks but by the plant regrowth on the reshaped surface. Thus it is the quality of the revegetation which is of prime importance. For vegetation to be successful, time must be spent on planned research into methods of overcoming plant nutrient deficiencies and selection of suitable grass and tree species.
