A basic method for designing reasonable jig cycles for movable-screen jigs is presented in this paper. The reliability and effectiveness of the designed jig cycle was verified with tests performed on an artificial mixed material. An iron ore (12 - 100 mm) from Huashugo Iron Mine, Jiuquan Iron and Steel Company, was treated in the TJD-75 movable-screen jig using the designed jig cycle. A good result was achieved. The procedure presented here should provide a reliable technique for the design of a commercial movable-screen jig.

The Siana gold-silver deposit of Surigao del Norte, Mindanao, Philippines is perhaps one of the most complex in the world, being related to an ancient suture zone known as the Philippine Fault. Early accounts described the deposit as epithermal, consisting of an upper limestone replacement orebody and a lower vein type deposit hosted in andesite. Recent field and laboratory studies, in correlation with the latest findings on the archipelago's tectonic evolution, however, led to the present interpretation of the Siana ore deposit's origin as involving both syngenetic and epigenetic processes, with limestone breccia, similar to the Cow Head Breccia of Newfoundland, as the principal host to mineralization.

A selection of Australian washed coal samples was examined to determine the effect of sample hydrophobicity (rank) and particle size on froth stability in the flotation process. The results indicate distinct rank-based variations in froth volume and stability for flotation tests conducted without the use of collector, over a series of particle size distributions.High-rank coals showed a greater tendency to generate stable, high-volume froths than coals of lower rank. Implications for circuit design and operation are outlined.

The Republic of Kazakhstan has well developed mining and metallurgical complex. In modern conditions, when deposits of useful minerals are running thin, it is very important to find additional sources for obtaining necessary products. As our investigations showed different kinds of waste may be used for producing of different kinds of products, which are successfully applied in different branches of KazakhstanÆs economy. Analysis of ways for increasing of complex use of mineral raw materials of different deposits, widening raw mineral materials base and decreasing negative effects on the environment, are presented in this paper.

The increased international focus on sustainable development and cost improvement, coupled with the unpredictability and adverse impact of droughts in Australia and globally, has highlighted the critical need for responsible management of water within the minerals industry. The Rio Tinto Technology Group recently initiated a priority program to examine how water management practices could be improved within the GroupÆs spheres of activity. Rio Tinto Technical Services (TS), the technical services consulting group of the Technology Group, has for many years been undertaking water management reviews and assisting group operations with the development of responsible water management strategies and plans. Rio Tinto therefore requested that Rio Tinto Technical Services develop a world-class approach to mine water management that will drive improvement in strategic assurance and operational efficiency of water at the companyÆs managed operations across the world. The initiative, known as æExcellence in Water ManagementÆ, includes the selection and use of state-of-the-art management, technical tools and methodologies to strive for best practice. The Rio Tinto Technical Services approach facilitates a consistent and objective assessment of performance across the entire spectrum of complex water management issues within a mining operation, from initial exploration through to decommissioning and close-out of the operation. Based on this rigorous assessment, detailed action plans can be developed, prioritised and scheduled for subsequent implementation. This paper presents the progress and experience gained to date in the æExcellence in Water ManagementÆ program, demonstrated by means of a pilot study conducted at Northparkes Mines in New South Wales.

David Pollard will raise this matter in more aetail in a later paper, but mere are some obvious points that I wish to make. It is a relatively straightforward exercise to assess the competency at a low level in the workplace where the consequences of a worker's actions can be observed immediately. Assessing competency at higher levels which may involve creative, planning, design or supervisory functions is more difficult, especially where managerial responsibility and accountability for the output of others is involved. This is generally the case with the daily activities of most mining professionals, whether they be in operations, in a consulting capacity, in research, or in government.

All this mining industryactivity is occurring against a backdrop of wider political, social and economic change, affectingmostofAustralia. The North West Queensland Branch of the Institute decided that the time was ripe for an open forum where issues involved with developing the region's assets be presented and discussed between members of the industry and also the general public.That then is the aim of this meeting: it is to be a place of learning and discussion about issues relevantto the developmentofthese deposits. Techniques for the optimisation of open pit design and development are now accepted as standard practice in the mining industry. These techniques are used to analyse the impacts on project profitability of factors such as product price, slope design criteria and equipment selection. A fundamental assumption used in this type of analysis is that dump and stockpile designs and sequencing are predetermined. The cost of haulage for a typical truck shovel mining operation is in the range of 25 - 50 per cent of mine operating costs. Substantial cost savings can be achieved by optimisation of dump design and location of associated road and ramp systems.Factors which affect both the operation and total cost of dumping include; Ramp gradients and location, road design, dump placement and shape, dumping height, slope design (interim and final), slope stability, environmental requirements and equipment selection. This paper discusses these factors and their effects on the total mining operation and project value. Reference is made to case studies in which some of these factors have had a significant impact.

Geological heterogeneity is one dimension of complexity in mining. Significant effort is put into developing an understanding of this complexity so it can be used in resource estimation, mine planning and economic modelling. However, over the decadal lifespan of a mining venture, many other dimensions add to the complexity of a mining operation. These include: technological evolution, market fluctuations; investor confidence; social norms; local expectations; and ecosystem functionality. As with geology, these factors are all heterogeneous, uncertain, time varying and represented through sparse and incomplete datasets. Recent work (Valenta et al) is beginning to show us how these risks correlate in different global settings. By analysing data relating to known, but as yet undeveloped copper deposits, this work (the complex ore body database) is demonstrating that it is the combination of issues (both price sensitive and non price-sensitive) that determine the viability of a deposit for extraction in the 21st century.CITATION: Littleboy, A, Plint, N and Valenta, R, 2018. THE object of this note is to set forth some particulars of the effect of light on cinnabar occurring in a deposit of this mineral at Puhipubi, in the North Auckland peninsula of New Zealand. This deposit is contained within a gently-inclined sheet of siliceous sinter forminga hillock called Mount Mitchell, and is particularly notable in that it is an instance of the simultaneous deposition of cinnabar and silica on a large scale. The mercury-bearing material varies in character from semi-porous sinter to dense translucent cbalcedony, of which the former is stained to various shades of pink, the latter to brilliant reds and vermilion. On exposure to daylight-and particularly to sunlight - these colours change to corresponding shades of translucent bluish-grey. As a direct result of this change the Mount Mitchell deposit remained unknown until some ten years ago, for, while prospectors early discovered cinnabar in the adjacent city and in a neighbouring stream bed, none of them recognized this mineral in the bluish chalcedony strewing portions of the surface of the Mount. The writer has carried out a series of experiments designed to indicate the cause and nature of this change, and to form a basis for the elaboration of more delicate experiments which would yield positive information. Circumstances, however, have so far combined to prevent the continuation of the research, and, as there seems little prospect of the writer being able to do more work on the subject, it seems well to publish the data so far obtained. Prior to describing this colour change, the writer would point out the desirability of restricting the meaning of the term cinnabar to the naturally occurring red sulphide of mercury; this would eliminate the ambiguities which arise from its indiscriminate application, in chemical literature, to both natural and artificial sulphides. Further the term cinnabarite having long since fallen into disuse, there appears to be no good reason for retaining the companionterm "metacinnabarite" when reduction to "metacinnabar" would preserve the meaning in a less clumsy word.

Around no subject of technical )uterest have prejudice and wrong-thinking in the past so wrapped a web of obscurity as that of the corrosion of metals.It is a matter which has primarily concerned the engineer, but the paucity of his training in chemistry and electrochemistry has been the stumbling block to a better understanding of its mechanism.Now that the more important conditions controlling corrosion have been scientifically.established, it can be seen that, with the exception of but a few of the minor points, the electrochemical laws enunciated by Faraday, Helmholtz; Nernst, and others, are sufficient to include all the facts of the process.The word corrosion (derived from the Latin rodere-to gnaw) is so often wrongly applied that a definition at this stage would be useful. As now understood, it means the dispersion and waste of the useful solid metal by conversion into a useless compound which mayor may not be retained on or near the metal remaining.Commonly the presence of these compounds is regarded as evidence of corrosion, but the converse is not necessarily true; the lack of visible corrosion products on a clean surface of metal is no criterion of the absence of this change. It may be difficult to prove that the erosion of such a surface has been caused by chemical and not by mechanical effects alone.

Mining is a high risk industry where miners seek to secure certainty in all of their dealings. The introduction of native title to the Australian legal system with the High CourtÆs 1992 Mabo decision and subsequent Native Title Act 1993 has added to the risks associated with implementation and the ongoing operation of exploration and mining projects. The High CourtÆs Ward case in August 2002 confirmed Crown ownership of minerals and petroleum. But the Court also found that a mining lease that allowed an exclusive possession for mining purposes did not extinguish all native title rights and interests. Although the Court was specifically considering WA mining tenements, the WA mining lease is very similar to the mining leases and licences that exist across Australia, meaning that these tenements are unlikely to fully extinguish native title. The Ward case means that native title remains squarely on the table now and into the future for those involved in developing exploration and mining projects. However, certainty and workability is capable of being secured and this paper discusses some means by which this may be achieved. The paper starts by considering two of the many 1998 amendments to the æfuture actsÆ regime under the Native Title Act, Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUAs) and the application of ægood faithÆ negotiation to all negotiating parties. It then looks at native title agreements, other issues affecting negotiations and tips for negotiation technique.

Metal grades and contents of ore deposits should be measured in an unbiased manner, and with a degree of precision that reduces to an acceptable level the risk to put into production inviable prospects. The additive property of variances for metal grades and contents is used to assess the accuracy and precision characteristics of this measurement process. Each stage in the process of extracting different types of samples from ore deposits, preparing test samples from drill core sections, drill chips or crushed ore, and collecting and assaying test portions, contributes a variance component to the intrinsic variability of a metal's distribution in its matrix. Deducting such extrinsic variances results in more precise estimates for metal grades and contents of elementary units. The cumulative metal content for a set of elementary units of in-situ ore, and the sum of the variances for metal contents of all units in the set, can be used to calculate confidence intervals and confidence ranges at different probability levels as measures for risk.

Recent works suggest that dehydration of subducting slab and consequent hydration and partial melting influences the dynamics of mantle wedge. Plums originating form the subducting slab due to Rayleigh-Taylor instability are responsible for heterogeneous composition of the mantle wedge. Also, occurrence of partial melt in the mantle wedge can trigger dynamic processes like exhumation of UHP rocks in intra-oceanic settings or can influence characteristics of the subduction tectonic regime. A 32-channel PSS seismic monitoring system was commissioned at Mt Charlotte mine in 1994, and at the time it was the first such system in Australian mines. The system continuously observes the occurrence of seismic events and locates them accurately in space and time. Mt Charlotte has a history of seismicity, with the largest event in recent years of Richter magnitude 4.3. The decision to 'go seismic' was made despite some uncertainty regarding its potential usefulness. However after the first year of operation, benefits have been realised in terms of less production downtime, improved mine safety and mine planning, and better understanding of the nature of Mt Charlotte seismicity. The seismic network has performed well, recording 550 events in its first year of operation to a location accuracy averaging ¦ 12 metres. System reliability is excellent, with very little downtime, and acceptable operation and maintenance times and costs. Observations show major distinct changes in the rate of mining induced seismicity over time periods of weeks and months. Events have tended to cluster in specific mine areas and on particular faults and structures. Case examples of pillar preconditioning, breakout around an orepass, and a major stope rockburst, illustrate the role of seismic data and the benefits it brings to safety, productivity and planning.

A method that allows data to be mass balanced and screen models to be fitted in a single step is described. The inclusion of several variables to describe the feed data in the fitting procedure allows a mass balance to be conducted at the same time as the fitting of the screen model. Analysis of Groote Eylandt Mining Company screening data has demonstrated that this method is ideally suited to applications where complete stream data are not available. Also, certain random fluctuations in screen model parameters arising from the fitting of consecutive mass balances and screening models are significantly reduced. A cubic spline function with fixed knot positions corresponding to particle sizes and variable (fitted) cumulative percent passing values is used to describe the feed size distribution. When the spline function is interpolated at the experimental feed particle sizes a fitted feed size distribution is obtained. This feed size distribution is then used as input to the screen model calculations from which product size distributions are generated. Since both feed and product size distribution data are used to minimise the residual errors between the observed and fitted stream size distributions, a mass balance is Conducted simultaneously with the screen model parameter fitting.

Sampling is an integral part of gold bullion analysis. Gold mining industries sell millions of dollars worth of gold on the basis of analyses. Biased sampling can cause a serious loss in terms of monetary value to a mining company; hence accurate sampling is of great importance. The sampling procedures for gold bullion will be described. Emphasis is given to the most reliable method of obtaining a representative sample from a gold bar. The problems associated with sample preparation will also be discussed.The sampling procedure at the Kalgoorlie Metallurgical Laboratory will be evaluated in the light of comparative results from the Australian Gold Refineries (Perth, Kalgoorlie). The most common sampling practices adopted by different gold mining companies in the Goldfields and Australian Gold Refineries, Western Australia will also be presented.

There are three major human resource management activities which, depending on how well they are done, impact on the performance of people and therefore the bottom line. These are: ò recruitment; ò training and development; and ò performance appraisal. Most sizeable organisations would say they are involved in all three, but there are many more that would admit that their human resource management practices are limited to recruitment. If we concentrate on the organisations that currently undertake all three, we have to ask, `Are they using different systems/benchmarks for each activity, or is there congruence between the activities?'. Our experience is that most organisations use different systems/benchmarks. The end result is: ò one set of criteria to recruit staff; ò another to identify their training needs; ò and yet another set of criteria to measure their staff's Performance.

Improvements in technology do not necessarily lead to higher profits: the benefit of lower costs can be captured by coal buyers, governments and workforce rather than by the colliery operators. The economic impact of longwall mining in Australia has been critically assessed to provide lessons for the future. For a variety of reasons, companies investing in longwall equipment in the past five years have generally not achieved an adequate return on the funds invested. The effect of technological innovation must be examined in the light of competitive forces operating in the market. Projections of cost reduction trends in the coal industry have been applied to a world cost model to provide a picture of the coal industry in the year 2000.
