A thousand writers have harped upon the wondrous nature of the inventive faculty. They realise that man is a creator, and that capital and labour alike are, and will always be impotent without machinery and processes that is invention. What Bacon has said is echoed by them all, "the introduction of new inventions seemeth to be the very chiefest of human actions. The benefit of new inventions may extend to all mankind-they make all men happy without injury to 'any' they are new creations and imitations of God's own works." My remarks will occupy another field I will refer to some of those features of the Patent Laws of different countries, which prevent the use of new inventions, oppress the development or inventive' genius, and diminish human happiness and progress' Wherever Patent Laws are framed and administered upon wrong principles, these results are inevitably found. A concise, complete, common-sense comparison of the chief Patent Laws of the world cannot easily be found but to avoid seeing scrappy, misleading references to Patent Law in the press particularly the English-would be equally difficult. Writers who are considered authorities so frequently make minor issues prominent and so uniformly fail to give weight to fundamental principles that the effect on the public is to mislead.

The karst water system in Han-Xing District is charaterised by heterogeneity in karstification and permeability of the limestone aquifer, unsteady flowing of the groundwater along karst runoff zone system, periodic recharge related with the periodic precipitation, and concentrative discharge of the groundwater in the form of karstic spring groups. The basic law is that the quantity of the water is very large during waterflood period and rather small in dry period, which has brought about difficulties and contradictions in mining and water supply. The measure to bring the karst water under control must be based on the principle of comprehensive ways and on the systems engineering method. Macroscopiclly, it is the reasonable countermeasure to retain surface water in the upstream section of the karst water system and to strengthen infiltration in the midstream section and to combine exploitation and utilization of the groundwater with water protection and mine dewatering in the area in which mines are distributed.

For decades strip mining with discon tinuously operating 'draglines and shovels has been the most economical operation method in the shallow hard coal opencast mines of Aust- ralia, North-America and some other countries. Continuously operating equipment such as bucket chain excavators and bucket wheel excavators in combination with conveyor belt systems, conveyor bridges and stackers had been deve- loped in Germany; during the last 25 years this type of equipment has been further developed in order to allow a high degree of rationaliza= tion as to opencast mines in unconsolidated overburden in Germany, in many European couh- tries, in India and in Victoria. The differing compactness of the layers to be mined, the increasing mining depth, the adverse over- burden to coal ratio and geotechnical con- ditions account for the combined use of con- tinuously and discontinuously operating equip- ment and systems. The influence of layering on the rate of heat transfer through a packed bed consisting of particles of two different sizes and heat capacities has been determined by measuring the heat front velocity through beds of quartzite particles and iron ore pellets. The heat front velocity through the layered beds was less than that through a bed consisting of a random mixture of the par- ticles. This is due to the formation of an interface in which the smaller pellets in one layer penetrate into the layer of quartzite Below.

Heavy mineral deposits accumulate on shorelines with interrupted sediment input. Beach deposits, which form on shallowly dipping coastal plains, are most favourable. However, shallow shelves seaward of cliffed coastlines are known to contain economic deposits. A review of the current pit design procedures and their performance has been undertaken recently by Mining Research Associates (MRA) and the CSIRO Division of Geomechanics. Visits were made to mines covering a wide range of operations. A questionnaire was completed by each mine in order to collate the relevant information. Interviews were also made with representatives of the Mines Departments to ascertain their role in regulating mine designs. Design expectations were compared with field performance, and reasons for variations noted. Problems associated with designs were identified and suggested methods of alleviating the problems have been made.

Modern off-highway trucks have evolved over 30 years from small 20 ton units to vehic- les with capacities of up to 170 tons. Diesel engines are used by all manufacturers while transmissions are either mechanical or electri- cal. Development over the years has kept pace with component availability from engine, trans- mission and tyre manufacturers.Computer simula- tion studies are recognised for purposes of vehicle evaluation and costing under various op- erating conditions. Several manufacturers are currently manufacturing or evaluating vehicles with capacities of up to 260 tons. This paper describes the essential facts associated with the operation of off-highway trucks of the rear dump type in the mining industry.

In a gold CIP/CIL circuit, adding new circuit water to a final tails thickener and then directing the thickener overflow to the head of the circuit significantly reduces the cyanide concentration at the TSF discharge spigot. The new water is used to dilute the final tails. The dilution and recycle of the tails in this manner may have the added benefit of reducing reagent consumption, in some cases to the point where the reagent savings justify the expenditure and Cyanide Code compliance is achieved at no extra cost. Potential circuit configurations and water recycles can be modelled by splicing a flowsheeting and thermodynamics package, such that changes to the composition of the water can be reduced to chemical speciation with a Gibbs free energy minimisation enabling a complete understanding of the circuit water chemistry.

As part of the construction of the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop it was necessary to construct two 7 metre diameter tunnels, each 100 metres in length, by shield driven excavation through an alluvial valley at Elizabeth Street. The tunnels had a primary support of bolted precast reinforced concrete liner blocks and were excavated with the aid of compressed air. The work was undertaken by the Tunnelling Group of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works as nominated sub-contractor to John Holland (Constructions) Pty. Ltd. Longhole stope overbreak has always been a source of unwanted cost within the underground mining industry, and efforts to control it using various rock reinforcement systems have long been a rock engineering challenge. At the Pasminco Mining Broken Hill Operations trials have been carried out using an innovative cable bolt reinforcement system known as Rib-Roc. The system, based loosely on the Swedish Rib-in-Roc concept, utilises zones or ribs of heavily reinforced rock in the troublesome hangingwall and back areas of longhole stoping. The trials were carried out under a strict qualitative and quantitative scientific stope measurement program utilising rock mechanics instrumentation. Not only did the trial demonstrate the success of the system but data obtained was useful in implementing the system virtually as standard practice throughout the operation.

The paper describes some of the economic and human factors associated with haulroads on Mount Whaleback, a large open pit iron ore mine. These factors have combined to encourage formation of a specialised road maintenance crew which caters for haulroad construction and maintenance. Techniques used for design, construction, operation and management of haulroads are then described. Future developments are expected to effectively lower construction costs leading to an even wider application of the techniques described and consequent improvement in temp- orary roads and overall truck performance. INTRODUCTION Mount Whaleback is a large truck/shovel open pit iron ore mine located in the Pilbara region of north Western Australia. Annual production capacity exceeds 100 million tonnes per annum of waste and ore. The truck haulage fleet comprises WABCO 120 52 WABCO 3200 22 74 of which approximately 45 are operating at one time.

With some two-thirds of the production exported, coal mining prac- tices of the last few years in Australia have been much influenced by the decline in the price received. It became essential to improve efficiency and rationalise operations. Trends in underground practice vary. On the one hand many additional longwalls have been installed and most recently the results achieved by them have shown a significant up-turn; this may be correlated more with increases in equipment capacity than with utilisation which has altered little during the past six years. Varied constraints remain affecting cur- rent and future longwall operations. On the other hand a number of mines have been closed whilst others have sought to improve results by various installations including miniwalls, shortwalls, and use of continuous haulage and mobile breaker line sup- ports. All mines continue to review working practices.

Polyacrylamide flocculating agent has been used in the Leaching Division of the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd since October, 1960. Since the introduction, the.: number of thickeners in use in the continu-ous thickening stage has been reduced from eight to three; there has been an increase of 25% in throughput and a reduc-tion of solids in.:thickener overflow from 3-4 gòpòl . solids to 0.5 g.p.l. solids. Reagent addition has been at the rate of 0.25. lb SEPARAN, NP10 per ton solids.Additionally there has been a gain of 3% in current efficiency as the direct result of the addition of SEPARAN NP10 to purified cadmium sulphate solution prior to electrolysis for cadmium metal. A smoother deposit has resulted and it has been possible to increase deposition time between strip-pings from 47 to 71 hours. However, there has been a slight increase the lead content of the cadmium-metal produced.

Arising from prospecting success, the underlying worth of the shares of a publicly listed mining exploration company can increase many-fold. Prompt and accurate reporting during the exploration stage is therefore essential. While there is scope for varying degrees of optimism or caution in statements about the future economic prospectivity of a mineral deposit which has been discovered, the directors of a mining exploration company have both a legal and ethical obligation to keep their shareholders and the general public fully informed as to the state of progress of, and significant factual results arising from its exploration efforts. Suggestions are made as to the desirable form and content of exploration reports up to and including the time when the orebody has been delineated in terms of assured tonnage and grade. The benefits which will flow from this greater disclosure are discussed.

The PACMANUS and Jade deposits are two active hydrothermal fields that are forming massive sulfide deposits at the Pacific rim margin. Both are associated with felsic submarine volcanic rocks and both occur in back-arc settings. However, PACMANUS is associated with almost sediment-free dacites and lies on the crest of a volcanic ridge, whereas Jade occurs in a heavily-sedimented tectonic depression associated with a basement of pumiceous rhyolite. The PACMANUS deposit is richer in Cu and Au, and Jade in Pb. Zinc, Ag, As and Sb contents are similar. Sulfide textures at PACMANUS suggest formation of Cu and Zn sulfides by simultaneous double-diffusion involving inwards-moving seawater mixing with outwards-moving hydrothermal fluid. By contrast, at Jade there is a more complex history of formation where initial growth of barite on the sediment surface, probably associated with microbial activity, formed an impervious cap which trapped higher temperature hydrothermal solutions.
