Successful restoration of Ballarat region alluvial gold workings to Box-Ironbark forest requires realistic evaluation of techniques. A stocking level threshold of 68 percent is used to rate the success of 'broadcast' seeding of E. microcarpa, E. Melliodora and E. Leucoxylon.Failure necessitates follow-up enrichment planting with tubestock, which is considered undesirable, interalia, due to pathogen, spacing and economic problems.

A unique set of circumstances has devel oped in the Mt. Newman Mining Co. Pty. Limited's project in the Pilbara because the mining town of Newman was built almost entirely by the Company whereas residential areas built by the Company at Port Hedland were developed as an adjunct to an existing town. The following discussion points out the different problems which have been developed in the two areas, even though basically the stand- ard of housing and general amenities is the same, and the means taken to overcome these Problems.

In many open cut coal mines, rivers and large creeks can cause planning and operating difficulties, both in the terms of the more obvious location of the current watercourse, but, and sometimes more importantly, past meandering of the watercourse. Prevent and past flow regimes may have deposited large alluvial sequences within the current mining areas. The presence of groundwater within the alluvium further complicates the planning and operating practices.A situation exists at Saraji Mine in which alluvial sediments overlie a massive sandstone sequence which in turn lies at about one metre above the coal seam. The problems encountered include high levels of groundwater ingress to the pit, highwall instability, and an unacceptably high rate of blast hole collapse (prior to charging with explosives). Other aspects of the dragline stripping operation were also affected.

The role of marketing in the development of a new project will be affected by political, commercial and technical pressures. Marketing success will be determined by the ability to predict and react to tomorrow's environment. In the Australian coal industry there is an emerging transition from production to marketing orientation. As a result, greater technical awareness of customer needs will be required. In particular, the industrial product nature of coal markets will need to be recognised. Greater attention will also need to be paid to product options and quality in mine planning. Marketing personnel will become more involved at every phase of the development of a new mine.

A sample of crude copper powder produced by the CLEAR Process was refined by dissolution and recovery in sulfate media using the Parker Process. The Parker Process offers an alternative method of copper recovery to electrorefining and allows a range of Eh and pH conditions to be used to provide further discrimination of impurities. High purity copper powder was recovered by the Parker Process even in the presence of added impurities when the Eh and pH was maintained near constant throughout the refining step.

Orebodies in the Mt. Charlotte - Hannans North Area N. & B. of the town of Kalgoorlie provide a marked'dontrast to the pyrite - telluride lodes of the Golden Mile, although both groups of orebodies appear to be fundamentally related. These highly siliceous telluride free orebodies N. of the Golden Mile are closely related to strong oblique faulting. The Golden Mile. lodes, while possessing an apparent over-all relationship to the oblique faults also have a close relationship to E.-dipping strike faults.

Most mining projects will involve some level of financial markets price risk. This is because commodities are generally traded in $US. The project will also incur costs in $A and if based in Australia will seek to generate a return in Australian dollars. Therefore the project faces commodity, foreign exchange and interest rates risk. As a business you may wish to maintain these risks within your business. However if the project requires financing to be provided then the financiers will want to ensure that there is a level of certainty attached to the cash flows to support the debt repayments. This is achieved by hedging the financial market risks. Traditionally the hedging process has been based on underlying assumptions within project models, which incorporate views on the direction of the underlying price risk. These views can be formed in an ad hoc manner. Gathering information from a variety of sources including economic forecasting and modelling, technical analysis, seeking market expert views. However, given the historical accuracy of such forecasts locking into long-term fixed hedging arrangements can create an inflexible environment that can restrict the opportunity to benefit from the underlying volatility of financial markets.

Geochemical investigations carried out in the Woodcutters area, Rum Jungle district, NT., consisted of a programme of C-horizon soil geochemical sampling followed by rotary-percussion and diamond drilling.Comparison of detailed geochemical sampling with the original broadly-spaced sampling showed that the structures along which the orebodies occur are reflected very closely by the detailed sampling.A series of vertical rotary-percussion drill holes put down adjacent to a gossan revealed a broad layered dispersion of lead and zinc in the deep lateritic weathering profile, while primary dispersion haloes are only very narrow. The layering appears to be related to the weathering profile.

The ore reserves of the Frieda porphyry copper prospect in Papua New Guinea have been estimated using kriging and an alternative method. Only very erratic variograms could be obtained from the raw data and thus it can be expected that kriging variances will be unrel- iable. The frequency distributions of the two sets of estimates show expected differences and the resulting mineable reserves show similar expected differences. More drilling and the use of disjunctive kriging are needed to produce reliable estim- Ates.

Monazite sand is processed at the rate of 25-30 tons per week at Rare Earth Corporation of Australia's plant at Port Pirie. Main products are rare earth concentrates of cerium, lanthanum and yttrium. The paste fill system at BHP CanningtonÆs underground silver-lead-zinc mine is described. The first of its type in Australia, the paste fill system has been operational since December 1997. Key technical and operational learnings since the first underground stope was filled are presented. Deposits of manganese oxides and silicates in the Tamworth area were re-examined. The major deposit at Danglemah consists chiefly of rhodonite and the rare silicate tephroite. It is considered that the manganese was deposited with the original sediments, the silicates being formed later during the intense folding and low-grade metamorphism of the enclosing rocks.INTRODUCTIONMany small deposits of manganese oxides and silicates occur along a belt of eastern New South Wales and Queensland.Some fifty occurrences, most of which have been subject to mining activity, were described by Lloyd (1943) and some of this information was summarized by Knight (1947). The ores have been mined on a small scale since 1884. Small supplies of battery grade ore were won from a number of deposits, while larger quantities of metallurgical grade were sold to the steel industry. Maximum production was in 1918, when 6,500 tons were mined.The siliceous nature of many of the ores and their occurrence in the neighbourhood of granite batholiths led earlier investigators to consider the deposits to be of hydrothermal origin, associated with the granite intrusions. The present work questions this viewpoint.In this investigation, three of the chief deposits in the Tamworth area were seen. These were at Danglemah, which is being mined at present, and Mount Jasper and Manganese Mountain, which were mined in the past. Ore mineralization in Masara consists mainly of gold-silver veins, porphyry copper and pyrometasomatic deposits related to left-lateral movements along the Philip- pine fault system and a later stage of magmatism. These are hosted by pre-Tertiary volcanic flows and volcaniclastics, and comprise a temporal pattern of earlier peripheral copper zone, an intermediate mixed copper-gold area and a later central gold vein system within the Masara sector of the postulated volcanic field. Gold ore emplacement occurred in at least two stages, and shows gradations from a lower mesothermal-epithermal phase passing into a typical epithermal zone, and finally into a truncated, or poorly developed, upper level thermal spring deposit. Orebodies are closely associated with hot springs, solfatara and several magma- related masses, emphasizing their inherent linkage with a geothermal system in the Area.

This paper describes the results of investigations into the relationship between specific gravity and chemical composition in the Cockatoo Island orebody, In the early investigations the samples were classified into groups according to porosity. This resulted in high, medium and low porosity groups, the latter being further subdivided into ore and waste. Whole number tonnage factors were assigned to each group. In the later investigations the reciprocals of bulk specific gravity and true specific gravity were ex- pressed as linear combinations of iron, silica and alumina using stepwise regression. The efficiency of the models as predictors was tested by dividing the data into two sets; one of which was used to calculate the regression equation and the other to test the efficiency of the equation as

The impact of moves to introduce Abori- ginal land rights was felt in the Northern Territory as early as 1972 when the Federal Government froze the processing of all appli- cations for mining interests over vacant Crown land. The Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act was finally proclaimed on Aust- ralia Day 1977 and since that date the mining industry and the Territory legislature have struggled to make the Act work. Despite these efforts long delays have been experienced by those required to negotiate mining and explor- ation agreements under the Act. In fact explor- ation on Aboriginal land has been effectively stiffled since the introduction of the Abori- ginal Land Rights Act. The Northern Territory government and the mining industry have both sought amendment to the Act to remedy some of its more onerous problems. These efforts have generally been fruitless. Some of the recommendations put forward by Mr Justice Toohey following his recent review of the Act would provide relief in some important areas. However, any such improvements are more than offset by a number of Mr Justice Toohey's recommendations which would severely disadvantage the vast majority of Territorians. A recent survey of mining companies seeking exploration licences over Aboriginal land indicates that many of the existing diffi- culties could be overcome without significant amendment to the Act but rather by the adoption of a positive administrative approach by the Land Councils. It is now up to the Commonwealth and the Land Councils to demonstrate that their Act can work without crippling the Northern Territory economy and its mining industry.

The (SA Mine at Cobar produces a mix of copper and copper lead and zinc ores fran long hole open stopes. Primary jaw crusher product is fed to two parallel primary autogenous mills followed by a secondary ball mill. Each mill operates in closed circuit with cyclones. Grinding equipment and the main operating variables are described. Copper lead and zinc flotation concentrates are produced sequentially. The control systems and operating strategies are described.
