As defined by both the Australian and New South Wales Governments the Illawarra consists of the Tablelands, the Local Government areas of WingecarribPe Shire, Bowral Municipality and Mittagong Shire, the Wollongong sub-region consisting of Wollongong City Council, Shellharbour Municipality and Kiama Municipality and finally the Shoalhaven Shire. I intend here to concentrate on community development in the Wollongong sub-region.

A research program was conducted to determine the relationship between operating conditions and medium losses in Mt Newman Mining's Beneficiation Plant. It was found that major medium losses were adherence losses and losses fran the overflow from the water recovery cyclones. Operating density and medium blend were found to have a significant effect on the medium consumption. Viscosity was thought to be the underlying factor. This viscosity problem was overcame by adding dilution water to the cyclone spigot discharge to reduce viscosity. To obtain cost-efficient financing by way of securing an optimal credit rating, the operating and market risks of a single-asset mining project should be accommodated in the financial structure. Weak financing structures can cause projects to fail, as evidenced by the Murrin Murrin and Bulong examples; these can be compared to the investment-grade structure of Straits (Nifty), which managed operational, market, and financing risks well. Most mining projects are capital-intensive, and have heavy dependency on debt financing. A weak financial structure may result in the early failure of an otherwise sound and economically viable project. Appropriate management of technology, construction, and management risks generally will get a project built; of the project failures that occur, most are caused by a liquidity crisis as the project goes through ramp-up (the transition period between completion of construction and full operation). A projectÆs viability can be enhanced through sound hedging practices, while poor hedging can increase the likelihood of financial default.

Selective oxidation of minerals was used in this study to separate by flotation the copper sulphide minerals of chalcocite, covellite and chalcopyrite from the arsenic copper sulphide minerals of enargite and tennantite. It was found that a satisfactory separation of these minerals was only possible after selective oxidation of their surfaces in slightly acidic pH conditions, or after oxidation and selective dissolution of the surface oxidation products with a complexant in basic pH conditions.

The effect of sodium pyrophosphate and several polyacrylate deflocculants (Freevis 502, 528, 529 and 532; and Maxfloc 1015) on the gold loading on Calgon GRC22 and Norit R035l5 carbons was tested and found to be insignificant in a pulp free enviroument. These deflocculants can therefore be used in plants processing viscous gold pulps without fear of fouling the carbon.

The studies of pulp electrochemical flotation separation of pyrite and arsenopyrite were made from the thermodynamics, mineral natural oxidation rate, property of mineral surface oxidised material and pulp electrochemical flotation tests. The results showed that although pyrite and arsenopyrite possessed similar thermodynamic stability, significant differences of two minerals were observed in natural oxidation rate, property of surface oxidised material and its influence to dixanthogen formation on the oxidised mineral surface. Based on the non-thermodynamic differences, the pulp electrochemical flotation technology was successfully used to separate arsenopyrite from pyrite in pilot test.

A fundamental study was carried out on super pit sulphidic gold ore to establish the most influential flotation characteristics which were subsequently used in the development of an optimum flowsheet to achieve best economical recovery of gold. In developing the flowsheet, consideration was given to existing operational constraints in the treatment of the Super Pit ore. The fundamental study also included an innovative diagnostic investigation to establish the location and value of gold in the major mineral assembly of the super pit ore from a metallurgical rather than a mineralogical perspective. This study mapped a metallurgical fingerprint of the major types of super pit ore in relation to the location and association of gold.

Scheduling mine development and underground construction has been the bane of most mine managersÆ lives at one time or another. Even though scheduling software has developed significantly over the last 20 years, mining projects continue to take far longer than expected to complete. It would appear that possession of a gleaming 1000 activity bar chart generated by the latest project management software and plotted in multiple colours offers no guarantee at all that any of those 1000 activities will be completed on time, let alone the project as a whole. The author has earned his æmasters in disastersÆ with more than one project running over time and budget. This paper describes some of his experiences in scheduling major mine development and construction projects and the lessons he has learnt along the way. In particular, the paper examines a range of key issues that mine schedulers must take into account when planning mining projects. The paper also examines the development of scheduling software and particular advance rates used in scheduling mine development projects in Australia.
