Recently, the great amount of funds has been invested in the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure and house of subsidence area of coal mine and mine reclamation. This is a benevolent and popular work, which is highly praised. However, because of complicated collapse area problems in China, especially the less integrated control research in the collapse area of metal mine, and the technological weakness, how to effectively control the subsidence area, restore landscape and ecological environment, and utilize the abandoned mine land, are major issue related to the mining area of sustainable development. The research situation about the formation of metal mine collapse area at home and abroad is reviewed, and then the effect of the collapse area on the mine safety and ecological environment, the existing technical problems and development direction are analyzed. Lastly, the technical measures of the collapse area control and cooperative underground mining is put forward.

Application of teleoperated and automated mobile equipment in underground metal mines represents a promising avenue to overcome some of the challenges facing the industry. This paper addresses the issues of overall effectiveness of the autonomous loading and haulage equipment in comparison with conventional man-operated machines. It overviews and discusses the factors affecting availability, utilization and production rate. It puts an emphasis on some problems and risks not present in conventional man-operated systems, as well as their character and criticality. It stresses the need to analyze the factors affecting OEE of the autonomous equipment more in-depth than it has been done up to date and to take them into consideration at the stage of feasibility studies. The paper concludes with some recommendations and indicates the directions of the future research in this field.

"The Nd-Fe-B scrap was placed in Fe crucible with pure Mg in an Ar atmosphere, and the scraps were melted using an induction heating method. The effects of experimental parameters such as melting temperature (range of 993K to 1073K) and holding time (15min-600min) on the ability of extraction were investigated. The microstructure and diffusion layers were analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and the constituent phases were characterized using XRay Diffraction (XRD). Diffusion of Nd through the Nd-Fe-B scrap into liquid Mg was described, and the diffusion coefficient of Nd in liquid Mg was estimated.INTRODUCTIONNd-Fe-B magnets are usually produced either from comminuted melt-spun ribbons as bonded magnets or hot pressed bulk magnets, or by sintering in conjunction with prior green compaction in an applied magnetic field (Sagawa et al., 1984). These magnets have been widely used for various electromechanical and electronic devices such as voice coil motors (VCMs) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (Samardzija et al., 2012; Matsuura et al., 2006). The production of the Nd-Fe-B magnets is increasing by about 20% per year because of their excellent magnetic properties. However, the expansion of Nd-Fe-B magnet market induced a concern for the scarcity of Nd at the aspect of natural resource. Therefore, the development of an effective recycling process for Nd-Fe-B magnet scraps is an extremely important issue from the viewpoint of resource and energy conservation. Several recycling processes for the Nd-Fe-B magnets have been proposed (Uda et al., 2002; Lyman et al., 1993]. It has been reported that the best separation of rare-earths from the Nd-Fe-B magnets is obtained by sulfuric acid dissolution followed by precipitation of recyclable rare-earth salts. However, this process can make a large amount of waste water including dangerous solutions. Recently, (Xu et al., 2000) have reported a technique to extract Nd from 18Nd-72.4Fe-0.9B-1.82Pr-5.3Dy (wt.%) magnet scrap by using liquid metal extraction (LME) processing. However, these techniques seemed to be difficult for application, because the scraps consist of an infinitesimal amount of other minor elements (Pr, Dy, Cu, Al and Tb), and these minor elements can make a new intermetallic compounds with Mg. Also, some oxides or the plated Ni metal can be preventable to reaction between solid-liquid (S/L) interfaces. For these reasons, the substantive reaction mechanism between Mg and Nd-Fe-B scrap is not clear. In this study, the simple composition of 33Nd-66Fe-1B (wt.%) magnet scraps were prepared using an induction melting process. The effects of the experimental parameter on the diffusion properties between Mg and scraps were investigated to determine whether these methods could be used in industrial application in a liquid metal extraction (LME) process."

"The revamp of critical process assets that require a significant plant outage (shutdown) presents a unique and demanding set of challenges for plant operators. They are executed in a more complex Brownfield environment, typically with limited working space and often involve unknown conditions or scope. For plant operators, such a project is often a high cost event both in terms of opportunity cost of lost production and the resource cost of labor and materials. It can also be a high risk event in terms safety, environment, and future plant reliability/availability. This impacts current and future performance or Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). In our experience, the sequential nature of the EPCM approach does not provide the proper framework to facilitate the level of coordination, stakeholder cooperation and detailed planning required to adequately address the construction and shutdown complexity of a critical asset revamp projects. This paper proposes a more integrated approach to handling shutdown revamps of critical assets. Its main thesis is to involve the key performing stakeholder groups early in the project lifecycle (engineering team, procurement team, construction team and plant operations) to form an integrated shutdown management team that is focused on ensuring delivered results are aligned with project objectives. In this model, the construction team executing the shutdown/construction is preparing the detailed shutdown/construction planning concurrently with detailed engineering and procurement planning. This allows construction/shutdown requirements to influence engineering and procurement, with the desire to optimize safety, speed, quality and cost. The paper also discusses how to overcome the procurement hurdle in applying such an approach. The outcome of this integrated approach is better planning, coordination, communication and alignment between the project stakeholders, a shutdown/construction driven planning approach that more fully addresses the challenges of these projects and delivered results that are aligned with project objectives."

The eastern and southeastern regions of Ohio are part of Appalachian coal country, with a documented 1,300 miles of streams impacted by acid mine drainage. Since 1995, partnerships of local watershed groups, government agencies, private industries and universities have focused on the remediation of the affected waterways. The partnerships have spent $2.4 million annually in constructing and operating treatment systems such as wetlands, anoxic limestone drains, successive alkalinity production systems, steel slag leach beds, and lime dosers. These systems have been partially successful, and water quality has improved in the region, but no treatment has yet met the ultimate objectives of low cost, continual remediation. Our research group has investigated an alternative system for acid mine drainage treatment: electrolysis combined with pH adjustment to selectively precipitate recoverable, saleable metal products to offset the cost of treatment. We utilized a $0.2 million pilot facility constructed by the Wayne National Forest, in Nelsonville, Ohio, to process approximately 40 L/min of mine drainage from surrounding seeps. The pilot facility has multipurpose tanks that can be adapted to process acid mine drainage with different characteristics, such as high or low aluminum content or high or low carbonate concentrations. Sodium hydroxide was used for pH adjustment. Results indicate that saleable product can be generated with this treatment technology. In an initial, not optimized trial, one seep yielded 4.7 kg of dried 69 % iron oxide product from 10 hours of pilot facility operation, treating 23,000 L with electricity costs of $4.68. Dissolved iron concentrations in the water were reduced from 242 ± 18 mg/L to 2.8 ± 2.0 mg/L (99.0 % removal) while the initial acidity of 443 mg/L as CaCO3 was neutralized to an alkalinity of 160 mg/L as CaCO3. Iron oxide can be sold as pigment for an average of $1.47 per kg in the United States. Currently, approximately 80 % of all pigment used in the United States is imported, and there is incentive to purchase domestically recovered pigment. If the iron oxide from the pilot facility could be sold as pigment for $1.47 per kg, 43 % of the operating cost (raw materials, electricity and construction costs) of treatment could be offset by the sale of the product. Considering the cost offset, the electrolysis process shows potential as a sustainable low cost alternative for treating acid mine drainage.

"A set of new blast damage criteria has been developed, with special reference to blasthole mining operations, for assessing damage by incorporating the vibration level, rock properties, site characteristics and the effects of ground support systems. The main objective of this work was to provide a database with reasonable accuracy for use in optimizing blast design, numerical analysis and ground control expert system module development.The new damage criteria allow one to estimate the degree of damage to rock structures in terms of a dimensionless parameter defined as Blast Damage Index (BDI). This allows for the description of blast damage in a unified form, and facilitates the development of codes for numerical modelling to express the degree of blast damage universally. A number of field investigations from several stope production and slot opening blasts at a large underground base metal mine were carried out to verify the developed index. The results show a good correlation between the observed damage and the type of damage predicted from the BDI values.Practical measures are also provided for minimizing blast damage in large underground blasthole mining operations"

Fluid flows in metallurgical reactors play a vital role on liquid metal cleanliness for both ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy. Thus, it is absolutely critical to understand different fluid flow mechanisms, and the use of computational methods to model the complex non-isothermal, turbulent, single- and multiphase-flows, has to be appreciated. The present case study emphasizes on controlling the flow of liquid steel in a tundish and enhancing liquid metal cleanliness. CFD modeling was used to build a robust mathematical model, and effects of flow control furniture and non-isothermal conditions were analyzed. The mathematical model was validated against water model experiments. Parameters that were conducive for inclusion removal were identified and implemented in the plant. Some flow control devices could increase inclusion removal to a great extent compared to the existing configurations. In cases, where a hot ladle was poured into a relatively cooler tundish, inclusion removal was better, whereas results were catastrophic in cases where colder liquid was poured from ladle to the tundish. Similar techniques can be applied for other liquid metals including light metals and non-ferrous metals.

"This paper examines the design issues associated with the integration of mineral processing within underground mining using a total systems approach. It demonstrates conceptual integrated system design options appropriate to a range of geological scenarios. Particular reference is then given to a case study of stoping in narrow base metal veins.The performance of such integrated systems in terms of productivity, economical and environmental criteria is demonstrated by means of simulation. Particular attention is given to the potential benefits to mine waste management. Processing technologies appear to offer genuine potential benefits, while underground mining methods may need to evolve further to facilitate full integration. This paper is based on industry supported research aimed at developing selective and clean underground mining systems. IntroductionTotal systems thinking is simple in principle but complex to implement. The premise is that to achieve optimum effectiveness and efficiency from a system, the complete system must be considered. Using this approach will avoid the situation where the optimization of a localized component of any system results in a negative impact on the performance of the complete system. Take for example the parts manager who reduces inventory costs without consideration of the consequences to the plant. If the plant goes down and a part is unavailable, it would then cost significantly more than the cost of having it in inventory (Ackoff, 1994).A tool for applying total systems thinking toward understanding and analyzing different mineral extraction options is the structured analysis and design techniques (SADT). Originally developed by Ross (1977), SADT is a formal systems engineering methodology (FIPS PUB, 1993) for process and enterprise modelling (Marca and McGowan, 1993). Figure 1 presents a highlevel structured analysis of the traditional or conventional metal extraction process. There are three sequential processes with several arrows entering or exiting each process. In SADT, inputs always enter from the left-hand side and exit as outputs of the process on the right-hand side. Constraints affecting the transformation of inputs to outputs enter the process from the top while resources or mechanisms enabling the transformation enter from the bottom. SADT is a hierarchical decomposition technique and further analysis is undertaken by expanding downward into each process."

"AS I begin my remarks this morning, please let me say how honoured and gratified I was to receive your invitation to address you here during your deliberations in historic Quebec City. The high esteem in which your Institute is held is reflected in the respect and deference accorded to it by industry across Canada. I feel privileged to be here with you today.I would like to discuss with you some applications of natural gas in the mining industry and suggest to you, in closing, some possible avenues of future development.Natural gas first became avail-able for industrial purposes in Northern Ontario in late 1958. Acceptance of natural gas, as a source of energy by the industry of that area, has been both widespread and gratifying. The mining industry of Northern Ontario has in-creased its annual use of natural gas by approximately 35 per cent each year since 1958. We believe that this trend will continue, al-though we will probably have to accept a more modest 10 per cent annual gain as the market approaches saturation. I would like to explain how we were able to do this and where all this gas is used. Our first sales were largely a matter of price-and the savings we offered were substantial."

"Laboratory batch flotation tests were carried out on fine (-20 µm) hematite to investigate the non-polar oil’s influences when sodium oleate, octyl hydroxamic acid, or oleyl hydroxamic acid were used as a collector. Batch flotation tests were performed with artificial mixed minerals (hematite:quartz = 1:1) under natural pH condition and kerosene was utilized as the model oil. The experimental results showed that kerosene emulsion behaved differently when used in conjunction with the three collectors. Kerosene helped improve the flotation when sodium oleate or oleyl hydroxamic acid was used as a collector. Nevertheless, it reduced concentrate weight yield, grade and recovery to a noticeable extent when octyl hydroxamic acid was used as a collector, especially at low dosages. In addition, single hematite batch flotation kinetics tests coupled with water recovery measurement were carried out to study the role of kerosene at different collector dosages. It was observed that water drainage and the resulting froth destabilization by kerosene was dominant at low collector dosages, especially in the flotation using octyl hydroxamic acid. At higher collector dosages, the water drainage and froth destabilization effect by kerosene was possibly counter-balanced by the higher hematite hydrophobicity and bubble surface tension gradient, which led to more stable froth layer.INTRODUCTION The minerals industry is facing a steady decline in ore grade, compounded by increasing complexity of mineral dissemination. As a result, the ore has to be ground sufficiently fine to have a suitable degree of mineral liberation, which produces large percentages of fine and ultrafine particles outside of optimal size range for ore dressing. Due to the unique characteristics of fine particles, i.e., small mass, high specific surface area, and problems such as increased solubility of complex minerals (Finkelstein, 1997; Finkelstein & Allison, 1976; Fornasiero & Ralston, 2005), high reagent consumption, fast surface oxidation in the case of sulfides (Collins & Read, 1971; Klassen & Mokrousov, 1963), severe particle entrainment (Subrahmanyam & Forssberg, 1988; Warren, 1984), low flotation rates (Glembotsky, 1953; Philippoff, 1952; Ye & Miller, 1988), slime coating (T. K. Mitchell et al., 2005; Parsonage, 1984), etc., flotation performance of these finely ground ores is very poor in terms of low concentrate grade and recovery."

"Drilling and blasting are fundamental operations in the mining cycle and constitute an important component of the mining costs. Problems associated with improper drilling and blasting practices can create losses of several millions of dollars per year. For this reason, a Blasting Technology program was initiated in 1984 at the Noranda Technology Centre (NTC). In this paper, advances made at NTC in drill and blast technology are reviewed. Impacts of drilling and basting for Noranda are assessed in terms of dilution and ore losses. Future challenges are addressed. IntroductionUp to 1997, Noranda was a diversified natural resources company that operated in three sectors: mining and metallurgy, forest products, and oil and gas. "The outlook for Eastern Canada is decreasing coal production over the next few years; however, a reappraisal of the long-term requirements and increased prices of coal could lead to a revitalizing of the industry. The market for Western coal is expanding and is expected to exceed 50 million tons per year in the metallurgical and thermal power fields. Western coal reserves are currently estimated at 119 billion tons. Technical developments in Eastern Canada include a shearer and gate-end support system to mechanically cut the stall and brushing at the tail-end of a longwall. In Western Canada, the most modern equipment is used in mining, beneficiating and shipping coal. Results to date on the underground hydraulic experiments exceed expectations. The importance of reclamation is recognized and plans have been made to restore and re-vegetate disturbed areas and mine dumps. In Eastern Canada, experiments were started to determine the feasibility of coal reclamation from mine dumps, including one dump that is on fire. The Mining Research Centre, Mines Branch, continued to conduct research work oriented toward solving Canadian mining problems The Western office of the Centre, opened in 1970, was set up primarily to study problems associated with a resurgent coal industry."

Placer Dome is learning from experience in Latin America, Asia and Africa, as well as in North America, that contributing effectively to sustainable human progress in the areas of its operations presents unending challenges to think creatively, communicate effectively and remain culturally sensitive. People must be better off in terms of their economic circumstances, their social conditions and the quality of their natural environment not only during the life of the mines, but after mines close. Stakeholders, all those who are directly or indirectly affected by a mining project, should be able to participate in decisions which affect them. The development of sustainability strategies, the monitoring of sustainability performance and the implementation of sustainability programs are best done in partnerships with governments, communities, nongovernmental organizations and multilateral development institutions. Ultimately, the success, if not the survival of mining, will depend on our ability to get the sustainability equation correct.

"PT ANTAM UBPE Pongkor underground mine use blasting to develop its tunnels which will cause poisonous and dangerous gases trapped inside mine. To analyze this case, a study of mine ventilation, the dispersion of carbon monoxide (CO) gas concentration and diffusion coefficient is commenced. At the end, the re-entry time formula will be determined. Results indicate that this study is site specific and could only be applied in the place this study executed. The aim of this study is to be further developed by applying Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to find a universal re-entry formula. Thus, its development and production processes require blasting to develop its tunnel. This process caused poisonous and dangerous gases spread and trapped inside the mine, one of them is carbon monoxide (CO) gas. CO is formed in an unbalanced reaction of explosives detonation and could be the cause of headache, blackout and death to people who inhale CO at certain concentration (McPherson, 2011; Hartman, Mutmansky, Ramani, & Wang, 2012). Mine ventilation system is installed in the mine to resolve this problem. Mine ventilation play an important role to disperse CO gas by absorb the poisonous/dangerous gases and deliver clean air into mine. The important parameter is diffusion coefficient, because diffusion is affecting particulates or gasses spreading from its sources throughout the mine. Diffusion coefficient is the total diffusion in axial direction of turbulent flow mainly by convection of bulk motion, advection and eddy diffusion, while the effect of molecular diffusion is appreciably negligible (Widiatmojo et al, 2015). Taylor (1953, 1954) develops a theory about the dispersion by inducing a slow stream of solvent into a capillary tube. Taylor used Reynolds assumption of radial diffusivity to be analogous with the transfer of the matter in turbulent flow as well as the transfer of momentum and heat. The ore of Sarcheshmeh copper deposit that has been located in the south ?east of Iran, contains four type of rock that they have their specific hardness and strength according to their alteration type and mineralization. Blasting of these various types of mine rocks prepares various types of size for the product of mine as the feed of concentration. Along the crushing of this feed a few factors effect on the efficiency of the crushing unit. The aim of this project has been the consideration of the effect of ore size on the efficiency of crushing unit. For this investigation along the year 2000 A.D., six sample from feed and six sample from product of crushing unit have been prepared. The results of the screen analyze of these samples has shown that the size of feed has been lesser than the primary plan and the size rate of the product has been bigger than the primary plan. Also in this research the effect of feed size on the quality of product size has been considered.
