The initial rates of dissolution of pyrite, chalcosine, sphalerite and galena in acidic sulphate solutions under oxygen pressure were measured in the range of Poe = 0.2-1 MPa, 130-180 °C, [H2SO4]0 = 0.2-0.7 M, and in the presence of surface-active agents and agitation producing Re = 4-16 x 103. Reaction orders, activation energies, and values of reaction constants for these oxidation reactions were established. The reactions also were shown to be diffusion-controlled; and the rates demonstrate a linear dependence on the surface area of the sulphides. A surface reaction model, in which oxygen is transported through a solid layer of surface products, has been advanced. The initial stage of high-temperature interaction at pH <7 is suggested to involve a chemical activation of the sulphide surface and is described by the following general reaction: MenSm + H3O+ Men-1 Sm-1 (HS-)s + H2O The subsequent oxidation of surface complex HS- to S0 or SO2-4 occurs with the assistance of Fe(III), Cu(II) ions depending on temperature and the redox potential of the medium, which are defined by oxygen pressure and composition of the reaction mixture, especially concentrations of H2SO4 and metals with variable valence. General process kinetics are complicated due to the formation of by-products on the basis of Fe3+ Pb2+, Cup ions, which displace the kinetics into the diffusion region.

"In carrying out a geotechnical survey of a proposed gas pipeline route from the Arctic Islands south to Longlac, Ontario, the Polar Gas Consortium contracted the drilling of several hundred 2- to 2D-m-deep boreholes in drift and bedrock. Samples from these holes were made available to the Geological Survey of Canada, where they were subjected to stratigraphic and trace-element geochemical analyses. The geochemical characteristics of the clay and sand-sized heavy mineral fractions of till samples from these boreholes have been summarized in a series of geochemical profiles.From the proposed pipeline terminus at Longlac northward to the vicinity of God&apos;s River in Manitoba, tills contain significant amounts of Paleozoic carbonate rocks and Proterozoic sedimentary rocks derived from the Hudson Bay basin and lowlands. Within this section, two sites were enriched in base metals, indicating the possibility of local mineralization of possible economic interest.From God&apos;s River northward to Seal River, Manitoba, no evidence of local mineralization was noted. The heavy mineral fractions of the tills are universally enriched in Mn-rich siderite thought to originate on or in the Paleozoic section of the Hudson Bay lowlands.From Seal River northward to Thelon River, near Baker Lake, tills contain only components originating west of the Hudson Bay sedimentary basin. Near the Keewatin-Manitoba border, all till is enriched in uranium, which probably originates in the ""young"" porphyritic granites underlying much of the region, and produces a distinctive airborne radiometric anomaly.At the Thelon River, multiple till sections are variously enriched in Cr, Ni, U, Cu and Mo in the vicinity of a distinctive aeromagnetic anomaly.From Thelon River northward, several coincident zones of chromium and uranium enrichment are found where the line of boreholes crosses east-west-striking belts of volcanic, ultramafic and sedimentary rocks of the Prince Albert Group.The results of this study indicate that till tends to have characteristic element associations or concentrations over each of several broad regions along the pipeline route. These are related both to large-scale bedrock associations and to largescale effects of glacial dispersal. In addition, the samples, collected more or less at random with respect to local bedrock geology, have intersected several small-scale geochemical anomalies that appear to be related to zones of mineralization of possible economic interest."

"The development of industry and intensive use of natural resources leads to a significant decrease in the share of reserves of rich ores, deposits of which have nearly all been exploited. Large amounts of displaced rock mass are accumulated, significant emissions of gas and dust from mining, dust from dumps and tailing pits, ingress of chemicals and toxic elements in surface and groundwater all can have negative effects on existing ecosystems and human health. Especially dangerous is the impact in Arctic regions with extreme climate conditions. The maintenance of overburden dumps and tailings dams requires significant capital and material costs. In this paper, some mining enterprises of the Murmansk region, in the Russian Federation, consider the environmental problems of the industry and propose some solutions.INTRODUCTIONThe safety of environment during the extraction and processing of minerals is a very acute problem throughout the whole world. The problem acquires a specific character in the Russian Federation. There, rather poor minerals, often existing in unconventional forms and including several mineral components are processed. The Russian mineral base has a specific geographical location; most of the deposits under operation are located in the Subarctic or Arctic regions, as well as in Siberia and in the Far East. Vast amounts of rock waste and tailings pose serious economic and ecological problems in mining regions. The operation of overburden heaps and tailings requires considerable capital and material costs. The dumps withdraw vast lands from potential commercial use. Large amounts of mined rock disturb the existing geological balance; emissions of gas and dust which accompany the mining operations, dusting of waste heaps and tailings, emissions of reagents and heavy metals into natural surface and ground waters all can produce negative effects on existing ecosystems and human health."

Spray-on polymer linings, as partial or full replacement for traditional forms of area rock support, have seen rapid growth in interest within Canada. A wide variety of lining types, ranging from polymer chemical to water-based cementitious materials, have been developed and commercially introduced to the underground mining market. Following approximately one decade of development work, several general conclusions have been reached regarding the performance of this class of area support media, these being that: health and safety assessment of the broad range of materials has shown the majority of them to be acceptable and safe for underground use; significant ground support potential can be offered by them, being equivalent to or better than capabilities offered by traditional support forms such as bolt-and-screen or shotcrete, and; their abilities to be rapidly deployed and provide near instantaneous support restraint offer considerable operational and cost benefits to underground operators. A review of currently available liner materials, their historic development within the Canadian mining industry, and overviews of support, health and safety, operational considerations and cost benefits are provided in this paper.

Mining firms are widely criticised for their adverse impacts on the environment. At the same time many firms in the industry devote extensive resources, both financial and managerial, to the reduction or elimination such impacts. Very considerable improvements have been made, although these are sometimes overshadowed by a few high-profile accidents, such as the occasional collapse of a cyanide-containing tailings dam. In parallel, much effort is also directed at projecting a positive environmental image, as witnessed by extensive environmental reporting, both on paper and increasingly through web-platforms. Mining projects today almost invariably involve some form of environmental protection. In industrial countries regulations in this area are extremely stringent, as is enforcement. In less well developed countries, regulation and enforcement may be weaker, but firms are in many cases and for a number of reasons committing themselves to high levels of environmental protection, even if they might get away without doing so. Research in the area of environmental performance of mining firms has so far paid much attention to concepts such as sustainability indicators and the sustainability of individual firms. Given the still raging debates about the appropriate way to determine the degree to which any given firm is sustainable (Welford 1995) as well as the usefulness of what will in the final analysis be a value judgement, anyone on the sidelines of the debate will come back to the fundamental issue, how is knowledge that a particular firm has been judged ?sustainable? going to be made use of. This issue remains unresolved, which may explain the lack of progress in formulating a useful definition of a sustainable firm The question addressed in this paper is not so much about what firms are doing on the ground or in any particular case of environmental protection, but more in the subsequent use of these efforts - and by extension - on the overall direction of corporate environmental strategy. The fundamental problem facing all mining firms is that they cannot easily benefit from unilaterally reducing their environmental impact. The firm can of course avoid liability and keep a variety of stakeholders happy and hence experience lower costs of obtaining the [input] resources they need (in a broad sense, not just minerals), but this represents only part of the opportunities available form pursuing an environmental strategy (Reinhardt 2000). The other part, which may have an enormous potential, involves the concepts of competitor management and product differentiation. The logic of keeping stakeholders happy has been most forcefully argued by Pfeffer and Salanchick (1978) who link the behaviour of firms in all domains to their ability to obtain the resources they need, at a cost that is lower than it would otherwise be (Pfeffer & Salanccik 1978). Several varieties of strategy can be included under this heading, including cost reduction and risk management. The alternative logic is to convince customers that they want to pay more for minerals supplied by mining firm X or directly attributable to mine Y, or by making all mineral users pay more. These two strategies, which may be referred to as product differentiation and competitor management, respectively (Reinhardt 2000) are related to the demand side of mineral supply, whereas cost reduction and risk management are related to the supply side. Introduction Many tables of nomenclature for igneous rocks have been introduced from time to time, and each has its strong proponents. As a result, any discussion of igneous? rocks is apt to prove confusing unless the names used for these rocks are defined. This ?became so obvious to a discussion group, formed by the members of the Geological Survey of Canada in 1948, that an attempt was made to establish a scheme of nomenclature that could be used by any member mapping anywhere in Canada. The writer was asked to co-ordinate the ideas presented by individuals in the discussion group, to arrange them in tabular form, and, later, to distribute copies of the resultant table to Canadian universities, provincial geological surveys, and some other geological discussion groups. Many useful suggestions and criticisms were received, were studied ?by members? of the original group, and, so far as practicable, were incorporated in the scheme of nomenclature. The result is the table presented here. This nomenclature of igneous rocks is at present being used by most members of the Geological Survey of Canada who are working with igneous rocks, and by some Canadian universities. We hope it will be found useful and be more widely accepted. With this idea in mind, certain principles were adopted in drawing up the nomenclature.

Since the late 1800s, copper-nickel ores have been mined and smelted in the Sudbury area. The Canadian Copper Company, the Copper Cliff ancestor of Inco Limited, commenced operations with a blast furnace smelter in 1888. Coal-fired reverberatory furnaces were added in 1911 and multihearth roasters in 1914. The blast and reverberatory furnaces smelted, respectively, coppernickel ores and ore fines until 1930, when a milling process and plant began operating to concentrate and separate the minerals of these two metals. Two reasons for this delay were: (1) the availability of high grade ores suitable for direct smelting; and (2) the difficulties in making the copper-nickel separation. The Mond Nickel Company, however, practiced flotation at its Coniston Smelter site from 1914 to 1930. A bulk concentrate containing six per cent copper and five per cent nickel was recovered from ore of 1.6 per cent each of copper and nickel. Gravity (table) and magnetic concentrates were also produced. Inco Limited (then The International Nickel Company) began laboratory-scale flotation tests on its ores in 1918. This work led, ultimately (in 1930), to the construction of the 7500 tonne-per-day Copper Cliff Mill, designed to recover separate copper and nickel concentrates. Its capacity was expanded to 11000 tpd in 1936, to 18 000 in 1940, and to 27 000 in 1942. Since 1971 it has operated to process only the bulk flotation products from other mills to yield individual nickel and copper concentrates.

"GeneralWabush Mines is an unincorporated joint venture of seven steel companies and Pickands Mather & Co. The mining and concentrating facilities are located in southwestern Labrador and the pelletizing and shiploading facilities are at Pointe Noire, 200 miles south, near the town of Sept-lies.The operation is based on a 5 ½ sq. mi. specular hematite deposit with a reserve of 375 million tons of concentrate. Annual production capacity is rated at 6 million tons of pellets per year. The final upgrading process utilizes high-tension separation of silica following wet autogenous grinding, spiral gravity separation and fluo-solids drying. The concentrate is railed in closed cars to Pointe Noire. The concentrate is reground dry and pelletized on Dravo Lurgi travelling grate machines to produce an oxide pellet with 65.5% Fe, 3.0% Si02, 1.95% Mn and 93.5% Tumble Index.HistoryPlant operations commenced in 1965 with a concentrator capacity of 5.3 million tons per year and a pelletizing capacity of 4.8 million tons per year. The original facilities for classifying the crude ore into fine and coarse fractions for storage purposes before reblending as autogenous mill feed were found to be unnecessary and were by-passed after plant startup. Capacity of the operation was increased to 6.0 million tons of pellets per year in 1968. This increased capacity required the installation of an additional160 cleaner spirals in the ore dressing plant, a new 5000 hp ball mill, three balling circuits and increased cooling air capacity in the pellet plant.In 1970, the regrind circuit in the pellet plant was converted to dry grinding and a significant reduction in grinding media consumption and maintenance costs was realized. A ninth grinding mill of 5000 hp capacity was installed to compensate for the reduced capacity in going from wet to dry grinding."

"In recent years coatings of alloys have been produced for a wide range of applications including many for wire bonding application. The main characteristic of the baths of electroless plating is the presence of sodium hypophosphite as a reducing agent and also as the supplier of phosphorus. In the electroplating of alloys the Watts bath is predominantly used. This presentation compares the two techniques, electroless plating and electroplating, and discusses the possibilities of cross utilization of sodium hypophosphite in an attempt to formulate baths that eliminate the waste disposal issue related to some components.INTRODUCTIONThe importance of surface characteristics and the linkage of surface coating process to surface characterization has given rise to the evolution of surface engineering. Not only the surface preparation and morphology has become very important to the coating technology but also the knowledge of surface area exposed to the process of coating or corrosion is absolutely essential in ascertaining the behaviour of coatings and their adherence to the substrate. The above concepts are not unknown to researchers involved in the protection of surfaces, particularly metallic, from corrosion and/or erosion corrosion. However, the complexity of the surface defects, roughness, porosity, interconnected porosity and other related factors have contributed to the uncertainty of the true surface area versus the nominal surface area. Therefore critical parameters such as current density and chemical surface intensity although have been studied extensively at the atomistic level by carefully prepared surfaces are very difficult to be determined at the practical scale required during the coating processes.The most pronounced case calling for an understanding the relationship between the surface area and the effective protection is the coating of surfaces of items produced by compression or consolidation of powdery materials. With the advent of nanomaterials and the additive manufacturing through 3D metal printing this issue is becoming more important. Certain experience in this field come from the accumulated knowledge resulted from the attempts to characterize the electrochemical behaviour of powder metallurgy metals and alloys. Powder metallurgy has been a well-established process for half a century on basic metals such as iron, copper and their alloys. Recently the development of powder metallurgy process for aluminum, titanium and attempts to develop powder metallurgy processes for magnesium and its alloys has brought to light another important issue that of the development of coatings on difficult to plate reactive metals such as aluminum and magnesium. Despite of many successes in the development of powder metallurgy alloys the exact characterization of the corrosion behaviour of the coatings and the substrates is difficult to determine because of the unknown morphology of the exposed area i.e. the exact morphology and area of the exposed surface (Samal, 2007)."

One of the challenges of mine planning is to determine the most cost-effective replacement time for aging equipment. The lifespan of equipment, such as haul trucks and shovels, deployed in mining operations varies due to the nature of the material and ground conditions in which it operates. For engineering economists dealing with aging equipment, the options become an economic trade-off between higher maintenance cost versus the cost of new equipment. The discount rate plays a significant role in this decision; the higher the rate, the longer the economically optimal lifespan. Therefore, the ultimate question is: ?How can the relationship between the discount rate and the economically optimal lifespan be expressed mathematically??

"This paper was prepared for and presented at a lecture series on ""Materials Randling"" at McGill University. The development of trackless mining at Gaspe Copper Mines, Limited is described, showing the changes in mining method and the part played by the mobile equipment in the evolution of this highly mechanized underground operation. Comparisons of loading and hauling machines are given and an attempt is made to predict some possible future developments.INTRODUCTIONTHE PROPERTY OF GASPE COPPER MINES LIMITED is located in the Gaspe Peninsula of the Province of Quebec, 60 miles west of the village of Gaspe and 25 miles south of the St. Lawrence River. The original discovery of low-grade ore was made at Copper Mountain in 1921. Subsequent exploration revealed the richer Needle Mountain orebodies, and eventually in 1951 the decision was made by Noranda Mines to build the mining, concentrating and smelting complex (Figure 1). Construction and development of the mine was commenced in 1952 and production started in 1955."

"Construction of mountain roads at north westerly Saudi Arabia is a difficult task in rugged terrains, where the rock masses are steep slopes, and full of geomorphological constraints.Werka descent lies at the north west region of Saudi Arabia. The Werka descent, constructed four years ago harmed due to rainstorm. The rock masses are metabasalt and metaryolite tuff rocks. The road is eight m-wide, surround by unsupported sharp manmade slope cuts, reaches up to 15 to 40 m height on both sides. Failures took place at both sides of the road, and blocked it. The road of almost 2 km long subjected to all modes of slope instability such as rockfalls, manmade slope failures and debris flows in the absence of the remedial measures. The very precipitous 40 m-high rock slope-cut along the road has no benches, backed by a natural slope of almost 80 m height. Both types of slopes suffer from rockfalls and slope failure’s incidents, frequently took place mainly in rainy seasons. The steep manmade rock slope cut is less than 1 m close to the road, with no ditches, form a potentially source area for rockfall’s hazards.Intensive geotechnical study includes utilization of the RMR and GSI rock masses classifications indicates that the rocks are fair to poor quality. The DIPS, RocFall, Swedge, RocTopple, RocPlane computer program, in addition to GIS and DEM image utilized to perform modeling and deterministic analysis, in order to suggest the mitigation measures for the natural and manmade slope cuts and rockfalls. The seismic coefficients of 0.1 to 0.4 taken into consideration in modeling processes. Input parameters to model the rockfalls and slope failure’s characteristics were studied such as GSI, block size; seeder points, locations of fallen blocks; slope angle, restitution coefficients, and slope roughness. The programs modeled the proposed location, height and energy of the rockfall barriers, collectors, and rock bolts. Two manmade slope cuts studied and modeled utilizing the integrated techniques were to eliminate the risk of slope failures and rockfalls through the construction of remedial measures, this is the study objectives."

The BIOX® culture, aiding liberation of arsenopyrite/pyrite occluded gold, is inhibited by thiocyanate (SCN > 1 mg/L); precluding the recycling of tailings water up-stream of the bioleaching circuit. The activated sludge tailings effluent remediation (ASTERTM) process is a biological process that was developed to facilitate water recovery and treat waste water on-site (to achieve a SCN concentration < 1 mg/L) to be recycled or disposed of. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of changing temperature and SCN loading on the SCN degradation ability of the mixed microbial population clue to seasonal temperature changes and fluctuations of SCN concentration in the waste water.

In this paper, it is investigated how different types of automation would affect the safety for workers in asphalt paving. The risk for the workers on road construction sites is consistently high in comparison to the average risk of the working population. Automation has been suggested as an alternative for improving the safety in roadside construction assuming that removing workers will inherently eliminate the risk of them being injured. In this paper, the potential for improving the safety using automation is analyzed in detail. By investigating accident statistics and understanding the type of accidents that appear, several different automated functions for increased safety are proposed and described. Based on available statistics, it is possible to estimate the safety benefit, as the reduction in fatalities, for several of the proposed functions. The highest safety benefit would be achieved by automating the road traffic driving through the work zones. This has the potential of reducing the total number of road worker fatalities with over 30 %. In addition, it would decrease the number of road traffic accidents in work zones. Automation of construction machinery and dump-trucks also has the potential to increase the safety.

Over the past six decades, Hatch has helped several industrial processing facilities in debottlenecking their operations, allowing them to produce more with the same equipment, to reduce and even eliminate expenditure investments, or to increase the return value of their expansion projects. These successes result from the application of a proven analysis approach that can be applied to any industrial facility. A five-stage methodology is discussed and demonstrated with a specific example of a nickel concentrator optimization study. The first stage is an observation stage which allows to meet key actors at the plant, develop mutual understanding of problems, understand operating philosophy, and efficiently collect large amounts of operating and maintenance data. Following is a data compilation stage during which data is analyzed over a representative time period to identify parameters that significantly affect the production, to evaluate data reliability and to define the focus of the upcoming analysis. Quantitative metrics are defined using statistical tools such as pivot tables, histograms, percentiles and MDR (Maximum demonstrated production rate during 3 to 7 consecutive days). Then, the production bottlenecks are identified by a thorough analysis of the facility’s control philosophy, process throughput, equipment capacity, availability, downtime causes, and interaction between components of each circuit. Understanding the maintenance practices and frequency of planned shutdown is also critical to this analysis. Opportunities for improvement are identified in collaboration with the operation, maintenance and engineering teams, ranked as a function of their impact on the bottlenecks and prioritized. The final and most critical stage involves engagement with the plant stakeholders, namely the operators and the maintenance staff members, to present the results of the analysis and obtain their participation in the implementation of the solutions. The benefits of the case study translated into: 10% production capacity gain, improved maintenance planning and avoidance of several million dollars of investment.

Due to the current lack of sufficient occupational hazards supervisory staff in China, an occupational hazards supervision regulatory framework is proposed, based on the cloud. Data on respirable dust, noise, heat, toxic and hazardous substances and protection facilities are uploaded to private cloud computing data and service centers to build an occupational hazards supervision system. This system promotes occupational hazards governance. Complex reports are generated. Through the establishment of an occupational hazard supervision data threshold, the dynamic regulation of occupational hazards is accomplished. The main characteristics of this approach are low cost, ease of expansion and maintenance, and strong performance.

"New Brunswick Finance Minister John Baxter pulled something out of a hat for the mining industry in April, but there is a general concensus in the industry that he should put II back where it came from.The industry has never been in the mood f or progressive rate structures, but that is exactly what New Brunswick &apos;s 1984 budget offers to this depressed sector of the economy.IntroductionThe Province of New Brunswick stunned the Canadian mining community in April with the announcement that the province&apos; s 16% mining tax rate would be replaced with a progressive rate structure effective January 1, 1984 (Table I). The proposed change, contained in the bud get papers tabled by Finance Minister John Baxter on April 17, caught the industry totally by surprise. The move to a progressive rate structure was completely unexpected for a variety of reasons:• Generally speaking, relations between the province and the industry have been relatively good, yet the industry was apparently not consulted with respect to the proposed measure and had no indication that a change of th is nature was coming. This is in stark contrast to the mood which prevailed during the major revamping of the province&apos; s mining tax regime in 1977: at that time, the industry was invited to contribute in advance to the province&apos;s plan for a new tax structure.• The new structure would appear to make th e province less competitive in terms of mining tax rates with Ontario , Quebec, and other provinces, despite indications in the past that New Brunswick is very cognizant of this competitive factor in formulating mineral policy.• A joint report in November 1978 by federal and provincial officials to federal and provincial finance and resource ministers, which was careful not to directly criticize Ontario and Quebec&apos;s progressive mining tax rate structures, recommended that provincial "" tax regimes be examined to ensure the inclusion of appropriate mechanisms to avoid the excessive taxation of cyclical type profit "" , and that ""the federal and provincial governments consider the concern over progressive tax regimes expressed by the industry and examine mining and royalty tax regimes and the income tax regime with a view to alleviating the effect of such regime on the aggregate marginal tax rate"". In this context, any move to a progressive rate structure would be viewed by many observers as retrograde."

Casting imperfections, such as porosity, in cast aluminum components greatly influence their fatigue properties. The effect of porosity on the fatigue life of 319-F and A356-T6 aluminum alloys was studied, where the porosity characteristics on the fracture surfaces of fatigue-tested samples were examined using SEM and image analysis. The results show that porosity has the most detrimental effect on the fatigue life: 92 % of all tested samples fractured due to porosity acting as the main crack initiation site. In the absence of casting imperfections, other microstructural aspects such as slip bands can be responsible ( 4 % ). The porosity was investigated in terms of the pore size at the sample fracture surface and its location i.e. near the edge or close to the interior. It was found that porosity located far from the sample surface (edge) has less influence on the fatigue crack initiation, and the fatigue life decreases as the size of the pore located at the sample surface increases. Excavation and earthmoving equipment mostly operate in accident-prone areas. These areas normally have rollover, confinement, and fall or may be considered harmful work areas due to demolitions and sewage removals. It is inevitable that excavation and earthmoving systems should be developed to secure the safety of operators through unmanned and remote control systems. Therefore, this research proposes a system that enables excavators to be unmanned and remote controlled without any renovation, remodeling, change, or transformation by applying attachable and separable mechanism and modules. Moreover, this research proposes the sensor module to evaluate the dynamic status without processing remodeling or transformation the existing hydraulic drive excavation system by adopting the easy attachable and separable mechanism. The study verifies this proposal based on observed possibility and feasibility through the experiments.
