Introduction The Siscoe gold mine is the most easterly producer of gold from deposits lying in the belt of Keewatin and Timiskaniing rocks which extends east from Kirkland Lake, Ontario, and on through the Rouyn copper area. Unlike many of the deposits in this belt, those of Siscoe are contained almost entirely in a stock of much-altered granodiorite which intrudes Keewatin lavas. They are situated on an island of about one square mile in area, lying in lake De Montigny, Dubuisson township, 40 miles south of Amos, on the Transcontinental branch of the Canadian National railways, and 52 miles east, and slightly south, of Noranda. Geographically, the deposits are favour-ably situated with respect to transportation facilities, a through water-route being available from Amos, along the Harricana river and its lake expansions. The deposits consist of auriferous quartz-tourmaline veins of the fissure-filled type and are of particular interest because of their geological structure and genesis. Furthermore, deposits of a similar type occur both in the Keewatin and in granodiorite bodies to the east, in Dubuisson, Bourlamaque, Pascalis, and Louvicourt townships, and it is hoped that the following discussion may be of some aid in the exploration work now being carried on throughout this general area.

"A common practice in preventing gravity-fed tailing pipeline from plugging due to sanding is to add lime at relatively high dosage rates. The lime affects the rheology of the slurry ""vehicle"" which transports the coarser particles in a heterogeneous flow-regime. This paper describes a study of the effect of lime on the critical deposition velocities and friction head losses of Highmont Mining Company's mill tailing. Testwork using an extrusion viscometer was related to the surface chemistry changes brought about by the high lime additions. Lime additions which typically increased the tailing pH from 8.4 to 11.5 reduced the critical deposition velocities from approximately 3.2 to 1.7 m/sec.IntroductionCommon practice, at least in base metal concentrators in British Columbia, is to use high lime additions in tailing slurries when the pipeline becomes partially plugged with sands. Some concentrators, such as the Highmont Mining Co. Ltd. plant, add lime on a continuous basis during low tonnage periods and during startup/shutdown transition s. Although such high lime additions often solve temporary plugging problems, the effect of lime on slurry rheology has not been well understood.Slurry pipelines are designed to transport solids in suspension with a minimum of wear and without particle deposition. These two objectives are in opposition because the velocities required to maintain solid suspension can sometimes cause high head losses in the pipeline, as well as wear problems. Thus, the optimum velocity for a long distance slurry pipeline is in the range that provides just enough turbulence to keep coarse particles in suspension."

"Mercury is introduced into the Bayer refining process as a trace element in bauxite. During the digestion stage, a portion of the mercury is extracted which partitions between the flash tank off-gas, vapour condensate and bauxite residue streams. A technology or treatment that stabilises mercury in the solid phase during digestion would prevent environmental management issues that may arise from the presence of mercury in condensate and non-condensable gases. This study examines the effect of process additives on the deportment of mercury under Bayer digestion conditions. Bauxite digestion experiments were conducted in batch autoclaves in the presence of additives. Process liquor was analysed for mercury content using a thermal desorption technique. Pyrite and copper hydroxide were evaluated for their suitability as additives.INTRODUCTIONMercury is an ancient metal characterised by electrochemical nobility, volatility, low solubility in water and a liquid state at room temperature (Holleman and Wiberg, 2001). The biogeochemical cycle of mercury is complex. Elemental mercury may enter the atmosphere due its volatility, where it can be transported long distances. After settling and adsorption to sediments, methylation is catalysed through microbial metabolism (Qureshi et al., 2009). Methylated mercury species are potent neurotoxins, and bioaccumulation of mercury is well documented, particularly in seafood (Kozin et al., 2013, Pan et al., 2014, Pollman, 2014). Environmental regulations for mercury emissions are becoming increasingly stringent (UNEP, 2015). Considerable research has already been performed and technologies developed for the remediation of mercury in wastewater and the trapping of mercury from industrial stack emissions. Wastewater technologies usually target ionised mercury using adsorbent, ion exchange and complexation mechanisms (Krishnan and Anirudhan, 2002, Li et al., 2015a, Chiarle et al., 2000), while stack emission technology is dominated by impregnated activated carbon adsorbents (Gao et al., 2013, Zheng et al., 2012). Related developments include piezoelectric amalgamating sensors for in line detection of gaseous elemental mercury in industrial stack emissions (Kabir et al., 2015, Sabri et al., 2011). There is a paucity of research regarding removal of mercury from the Bayer process."

"Most underground diesel equipment is equipped with diesel oxidization catalysts (DOCs) to reduce carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions. DOCs do not alter nitrogen oxides concentrations but can promote the oxidization of nitric oxide (NO) to the more toxic nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Vale and CanmetMINING have been researching how to reduce worker exposure to diesel emissions by testing mining equipment DOCs. Results indicate a > 77% decrease in carbon monoxide concentration but a 46–315% increase in NO2 concentration for 8-mode test cycles. It is recommended that DOCs that increase NO2 emissions be evaluated regarding their continued use in underground operations.RÉSUMÉ La plupart des équipements miniers souterrains sont équipés de catalyseurs d’oxydation diesel (DOC) afin de réduire les émissions de monoxyde de carbone et d’hydrocarbures. Les DOC ne modifient pas les concentrations des oxydes d’azote mais ils peuvent faciliter l’oxydation du monoxide d’azote (NO) en dioxyde d’azote (NO2), plus toxique. Vale et CanmetMINING effectuent des recherches pour réduire l’exposition des travailleurs aux émissions de diesel en analysant les DOC des équipements miniers. Selon les résultats, une diminution > 77 % dans la concentration de monoxyde de carbone est atteinte mais elle est accompagnée d’une augmentation de 46 à 315 % de la concentration en NO2 pour des cycles d’essais à 8 modes. This study was aimed at separating and recovering arsenic, antimony, and tin from refining byproducts generated in a nonferrous smelter. The target byproduct was a silicate slag containing the above elements. The silicate structure of the slag was destroyed by alkali roasting, which then enabled leaching of arsenic, antimony and tin in solution effectively. Arsenic was selectively leached out by hot water after alkali roasting of the slag, while remained antimony and tin in the residue were leached out by a hot hydrochloric acid solution. However, when the solid-liquid ratio in the leaching solution was increased, hydrous gelatinous silica (gel-like silica) was formed during the hydrochloric acid treatment and filtration became difficult. Therefore, high temperature and high pressure leaching was attempted to improve the filterability of the silica leaching residue. In the high temperature and high pressure treatment, the hydrous gel-like silica was transformed into easily filterable aggregated silica, and thus, filtration became easy. By investigating the neutralization and sulfurization treatment for the obtained hydrochloric acid leachate (second leachate), it was possible to separate antimony and tin. INTRODUCTION This study aims to separate arsenic and recover valuable metals such as antimony and tin from refining byproducts generated in a nonferrous smelter. The target smelting byproduct is antimony-containing slag in this study. In many cases, alkali roasting was adopted as pretreatment for extraction and recovering valuable metals from smelting residues and wastes (Rao, 2006). For antimony-containing slag in this study, one effective method for separating arsenic is to convert arsenic to sodium arsenate (Na3AsO4) by roasting with a sodium compound and then to remove arsenic by hot water leaching. In addition, by alkali roasting, the silicate structure of the slag is destroyed, and effectively alkalizing tin and antimony is accomplished. Then, precipitating and recovering tin and antimony leached into the acid solution are considered possible by sulfurization and neutralization treatments. In this research, we conducted basic studies on the following. 1) Destruction of silicate structure in slag by alkali roasting and leachability of arsenic. 2) Conversion of hydrous gelatinous silica to aggregated silica by hydrochloric acid treatment of residues after arsenic leaching under high temperature and high pressure, as well as leachability of antimony and tin. 3) Separation and recovery of antimony and tin by sulfurization and neutralization treatments of hydrochloric acid leachate. These topics of investigation can support to consider the separation and recovery process of arsenic, antimony, and tin from antimony containing slag.

The results of complex processing sulphide copper ore and advantages of recovery of copper by vat and heap leaching, sorption, cementation and electrolytic solutions processing and utilization of waste material after heap leaching of copper for production of building materials were investigated. The combined chemical solvents with the additives of oxidizing agents are developed at the KazNTU. The solvents are inorganic or organic chemical reagents, which form complexes of Cu, Au, Ag, Pt, Ni, Sr, Co etc. Recovery of non-ferrous metals from solutions and purification of industrial waste waters is carried out on the base of using new synthetic and natural sorbents (from local raw materials) which are able to bind ions in both cationic and anionic forms depending on type of ligands and external conditions. Optimum parameters of copper sorption were determined. The developed wasteless technologies of copper extraction from sulphide ores with usage of new non-toxic solvents and accessible sorbents with full recycling of water are tested in pilot scale heap leaching, and are recommended as the ecological, economical and practical alternative to traditional methods.

"Adsorption isotherms of hexyl mercaptan vapour on synthetic sphalerite, zinc sulphide and zinc oxide were de-termined with a gravimetric McBain-Baker micro balance incorporated in the B.E.T. apparatus. Isotherms are given for hexyl mercaptan on synthetic sphalerite at 25°C, 0.5°C and 50°C; on zinc sulphide at 25°C and 1.5°C; and on zinc oxide at 25°C. All these isotherms are sigmoidal, with a definite change in slope at or close to the mono-layer. The amount of mercaptan adsorbed below the monolayer increases almost linearly with relative pressure to P/P0 = 0.8.Above this value, the amount adsorbed increases very rapidly with relative pressure. Hysteresis loops appear in the isotherms for all adsorption-desorption cycles. These loops are completely reversible. It is not possible to desorb the mercaptan monolayer from any of the adsorbents, even at elevated temperatures."

"Three main types of base metal sulphide mineralization are present in the Timmins area:(1) -Massive and stringer-type copper-zinc deposits occurring mainly in pyroclastic rocks, as typified by the mines of Kam-Kotia, Jameland and Canadian Jamieson, or within or close to possible breccia pipes as shown by the Genex and Kidd Creek mines. With the exception of the Kidd Creek mine, all of these orebodies occur northwest of Timmins (Kamiskotia area) and appear to lie within or close to a major center of volcanic activity characterized by a thick accumulation of felsic pyroclastic rocks and subordinate epizonal intrusions. The margins of the rhyolitic pile are interfingered with mafic volcanics; overlying sedi-ments mark the termination of a vol-canic cycle. The copper-zinc deposits in the Kamiskotia area are confined to a particular stratigraphic unit. Ore-bearing solutions were probably derived from the intrusive complex of the volcanic pile.(2) -Porphyry copper deposit of the Mcintyre mine. The deposit occurs in a quarz porphyry intrusion related to the volcanism in the area (Hurst, 1936). Mineralization was probably introduced at the time of intrusion, and subsequently redistributed within the porphyry during deformation. (3) -Massive and disseminated nickel mineralization, associated with serpentinized alpine-type ultramafic intrusions, as shown by the Alexo, McWatters, Hart, Inco and Texmont deposits. The nickel mineralization occurs at or near contacts of the serpentinites with felsic or mafic volcanics, or sulphide-bearing iron formations. The nickel deposits south of Timmins are confined to a particular stratigraphic unit along the margins of domical-shaped structures which appear to outline former volcanic centers. Sulphurization as pro-posed by Naldrett (1966) appears to be a workable hypothesis for the formation of some of the deposits."

"A variety of techniques for interpreting systems of mineralized echelon veins is discussed using examples from Panasqueira and SW England. As aids for exploration and mine planning, and as a tool for ore reserve evaluation, particular emphasis is placed upon establishing vein morphology in the third dimension, and upon understanding vein dilation and propagation histories. Special attention is also placed upon investigating vein thickness and spacing relationships, and upon understanding vein segmentation. The relevant data for these techniques are all readily obtainable from stope and core sources.The vein systems described were produced in host-rock sequences that underwent incremental dilation in response to fluid overpressures, and individual veins display evidence for mineral infilling synchronous with their propagation. Echelon vein geometries resemble those reported from igneous dikes and sills: vein walls are stepped and veins are divided into segments arranged in echelons. Changes in vein geometry, from arrays to composite structures, reflect both the evolution of the vein system with time, and the changes occurring between the margins (arrays) and core (composite structures) of the system. These characteristic morphologies can be used to infer vein propagation and fluid injection trends, proximity of neighboring veins, and the shape of the system as a whole. The techniques are applicable to systems of echelon veins produced under tensile conditions in rocks where faults were absent at the time of vein formation, and where subsequent deformation has been minimal. Further work is required to assess the application to echelon vein systems formed within more complex tectonic regimes."

"The mining and metallurgy industry is highly energy intensive and one of the largest energy users in Canada. Energy costs are also a major component of total production costs in this industry as described in the 1990 Report of The Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC). For some plants, energy costs are reported to be up to 30% of total production costs. Therefore, a reduction in energy costs provides an opportunity to improve industry profitability. The specific energy intensity and production costs can be reduced by using modem energy efficient natural gas technologies. In addition, these technologies often improve product quality and increase productivity. Natural gas not only offers economic benefits, but is also environmentally benign as compared to other major energy sources. Emissions of NO"", CO2 particulates and SO2 are lower with natural gas than other fossil fuels.This paper provides a brief overview of some state-of-the-art gas technologies for the mining and metallurgy industry including cogeneration, oxy-air-fuel burners, ceramic immersion tube heaters, direct gas contact process, low NOx burners, and energy efficient liquid heating systems.CogenerationCogeneration is defined as the simultaneous production of electricity or mechanical power and useful process heat from a single fuel source. One of the primary considerations in selecting a cogeneration system is the relative quantities of electrical and thermal energy which are to be produced. Two types of systems are discussed below."

Introduction A shaft sinking operation carried out at the Viking Yellowknife mine in the spring of 1947 presents certain features, especially as regards speed of sinking and low cost, that may be of interest to Institute members, and especially to those who are not familiar with conditions and costs in the Northwest Territories. After collaring, the inclined, two-compartment shaft was sunk 130 feet by four miners in twenty-eight days at a direct cost of only $53.19 per foot. All things considered, this is a remarkable performance, even if it does not actually establish a record. The property is at Morris lake, some forty-five miles north of Yellowknife. Formerly owned by Athona Mines (1937), Limited, it was acquired by the then newly incorporated Viking Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited, in 1947. Surface work and diamond drilling in 1946 disclosed a number of veins and masses of quartz in a sill of diorite which lies conformably within sedimentary rocks. The sill strikes N.30°E. and dips at 70° to 85° southeast, and has a mean width of 40 feet over its explored length of 3,000 feet . Both the quartz and the diorite carry gold and are mineralized with pyrrhotite and lesser amounts of galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and arsenopyrite. Of thirty-five holes drilled in the mineralized zone, the core from twenty showed visible gold. Sampling of drill cores indicated several ore shoots in the north and central parts of the sill. Assays, however, were somewhat erratic, possibly due to the fairly widespread presence of visible gold, and it was decided that the deposit could best be explored by underground sampling. Accordingly, late in 1946, plans were laid for the sinking of a shaft.

This paper will deal with on-site maintenance welding using the stick electrode, electric arc process. It is primarily concerned with the underlying principles, the application of which, or the lack of such application, governs the success or failure of the operation. It will discuss first the base metal or item to be welded, including the field identification of its weld-ability and the determination of the procedures to be followed. Second, it will outline heat effects and the interrelation between heat applied as part of a welding operation and heat deliberately applied as part of a heat treating cycle, stressing the fact that in welding the same basic principles are effective. The third consideration will be weld metal and its control of both composition and properties. Last, but not least, distortion, shrinkage and residual stress will be considered and practical means for minimizing their adverse effects outlined.

The introduction of froth flotation technology in Canada, and in particular, in British Columbia, began not long after it was successfully applied in the Broken Hill mining area of Australia which began around 1905. It proved to be a revolutionary and transformative technology that resulted in marginal operations in copper, lead and zinc becoming profitable in spectacular fashion. The paper presents the technology of both oil flotation and froth flotation in the context of the challenges of the time and its early application in British Columbia at the Le Roi No.2 mine (1903), the Britannia Copper mine (1912), and at the Allenby concentrator of the Copper Mountain mine (1918-19). New-found archival documents indicate the Britannia application to be the first production application of froth flotation for copper ore outside Australia, a claim that is currently made by the Braden mine (now El Teniente) in Chile. Flotation was initially an add-on process following gravity methods but was rapidly shown to be far superior method for the bulk and selective recovery of metal sulphides. Flotation proved particularly successful for the recovery of zinc sulphide (the so-called ‘zinc problem’) which was considered a contaminant at the time. The ‘copper problem’ related to the poor recovery of fine copper sulphide particles that were not amenable to gravity methods. The success of flotation led to changes in both the scale and methods of mining, concentration and smelting in a manner that allowed integrated mining companies to flourish. Many are still with us today. INTRODUCTION The advent of froth flotation in the early 20th century was truly a revolutionary technological development, not only for the mining and metallurgical industries, but arguably more so for business and society overall. The Canadian technology historian Jeremy Mouat stated (1996) “The development of flotation was the greatest single metallurgical improvement of the modern era...it is not overstating the case to claim that flotation was of central importance to the smooth functioning of the global economy”. It should, therefore, be a story of interest to us all. The aim of this paper is not to retell the full story, that has been well covered by others (Hoover, 1912; Rickard, 1916a; Hines & Vincent, 1961; Lynch et al., 2010) but rather to add some Canadian perspective and the key role played by companies and individuals in those early days, focusing on events in British Columbia’s copper industry. EARLY DEVELOPMENTS During the later half of the 19th century, a number of flotation-related patents were issued. These include the 1860 patent (Britain) granted to William Haynes for a process to separate sulphides from ground ore by mixing it with oil (1-10% wt) followed by a separation process in a water-filled vessel; the 1877 patent granted to Georg and Adolph Bessel (Germany) for a process involving the mixing of oil and graphite ore followed by boiling in water to produce a high grade graphite froth (>90% carbon); and the 1885 patent granted to Rebecca ‘Carrie’ Everson for the separation of sulphides by mixing sulphide ore with small quantities of oil, and adding water followed by sulphuric acid. These processes are more properly referred to as bulk oil flotation due to the relatively large quantity of hydrocarbon used.

"Although there have been great steps forward to integrate corrosion engineering into operations, there is still an underlying tendency for maintenance tasks to be performed in a reactive manner. This is especially true when strategies focus on lagging indicators such as visual inspections, RCA (root-cause analysis), and FMECA (failure mode, effects and criticality analysis). This trend to “reactive maintenance” can be avoided by utilizing more inspection and monitoring methods to identify leading indicators of failures. Prevention is generally less costly than repairs; moreover, when paired with appropriate monitoring techniques, intervention of corrosion protection can be more effectively timed and based on more accurate data. Hatch asset reliability studies show nearly 80% of defects are introduced through operations and maintenance. Therefore, proactive corrosion management can provide the necessary feedback to optimize operations and maintenance strategies preventing costly corrosion losses. Understanding corrosion risks gives a clear picture of the benefits of a proactive approach to asset performance. Monitoring techniques (Non-Destructive Testing, field testing, sampling, etc.) by nature are a more effective means of improving maintenance efforts and preventing corrosion losses than other methods (RCA, FMECA). This paper will outline the importance of proactive corrosion management and demonstrate its benefits through industry examples.INTRODUCTION Over the past few decades, with the growth of technology and awareness of sustainable development many studies have shown the benefits of a proactive approach to maintenance strategies. However, in practice there is still an underlying tendency for maintenance tasks to be performed in a “reactive manner”. "This paper describes the development of an automated, 70-ton capacity, underground electric trolley truck at Inco Ltd. The purpose of the project is to provide a high capacity and high productivity haulage system to suit continuous loader applications in existing mining horizons where conveyor belt application is not immediately practical. IntroductionWith the start o f a program by Inco in mid-1983 to develop a continuous loader for bulk mining of our hardrock orebodies, the need for a rapid ore transportation system was recognized to match the increased extraction rates planned. Two methods were investigated, truck haulage and conveyor belt. As a result, a conveyor belt system has since been designed and installed with a continuous loader at Stobie Mine and an electric truck has been designed, fabricated and assembled, with shop testing underway. This paper deal s with the latter project. BackgroundMany existing mining horizons which could utilize continuous loaders do not have the straight runs required for conveyor belts. In these situations, truck haulage would be the only alternative of the other transportation methods that would be practical. In order to match the high productivity potential of the continuous loader, however, a more efficient trucking system is required than would be available with conventional diesel powered trucks or with electric truck designs commercially available, or under development. A higher capacity truck and an automated operation is necessary so that the application of additional units to suit increasing haulage distances matches loader output without reducing over-all productivity because of the need for additional operators.A first effort to work with a major electrical manufacturer was unsuccessful and resulted in a project delay of almost one year. In November 1984, an investigation into the concept was reinstigated with UTDC, and an agreement to start design was reached in April 1985."

"This paper describes an alternative method of vehicle control which uses a micro-processor to control the field current and armature voltage concurrently. The field tests carried out and the conclusions drawn from the basis of the paper.IntroductionIt is generally accepted that the main obstacle to a greater use of electric vehicles is the relatively poor range and performance when compared to alternatives such as diesel and petrol-engine vehicles. Much effort has been applied to the problem of increasing the energy storage density of batteries and considerable improvements are now being reported.Improvements in the efficient use of the stored energy, although unlikely to achieve the necessary increase in range and performance for a widespread acceptance of electric vehicles, can nevertheless make a useful contribution. Because the improvement in efficiency is achieved by a reduction in losses, it follows that the temperature rise in drive-train components is reduced. These advantages, coupled with the increasing cost of energy, make improvements in the efficient use of the stored energy desirable, if not absolutely necessary. To achieve this with the large and rapidly varying loads encountered during the operational use of a vehicle will require a more flexible system of control than that provided by the current limit. This paper describes an alternative method of control which uses a micro-processor to control the field current and armature voltage concurrently.The value of these parameters is selected to supply the power demand at the motor shaft, with the minimum losses in electrical transmission, thus increasing the efficiency with which the stored energy is used."

"From1927 to1989, the Hornemineproduced53.7 Mt of ore grading 6.1 g/t Au and 2.2% Cu from two large volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits composed primarily of pyrrhotite, pyrite and chalcopyrite. The ore bodies were hosted by a package of chlorite-sericitealtered epiclastic rhyolite tuffs which were deposited in a narrow palaeo-graben located on the flank of a major felsic volcanic centre. M ineralizingfluids percolated upward through the permeable footwall rocks and were further focussed along syn-volcanic, graben-bounding faults. Sulphides were deposited by a process of sub-seafloor replacement of the rhyolite tuffs.Gold-copper-(zinc) mineralization, including ore zones mined between 1985 and 1989 as the REMNOR ore zones, is present throughout the 900 m of felsic volcanic stratigraphy at the Horne. All the deposits were formed by syn-volcanic hydrothermal processes active during felsic volcanism. Ces gites se sont formes par le biais d' un processus hydrothermal qui ag issait pendant le volcanisme felsique. Cementing materials of mineral origin were well known to the ancients. Ordinary lime and gypsum plasters were the first to be recorded by historians. The next development was the discovery that certain limes would set under water, but the hydraulic property was not definitely attributed to the presence of clay in the limestone until many centuries later. The Romans advanced a step nearer to modern cement in the development of 'pozzuolana', a mixture of volcanic ash or trass with hydrated lime. The silicate of aluminium in the volcanic rock combined readily with the lime, forming a hydraulic mortar or cement which was widely used. Natural Cement In Europe (1) No further progress was made in the art of manufacturing cement for several centuries, during which the Roman Empire declined and passed away, and the Anglo-Saxon race slowly and painfully evolved through the Middle Ages an ever-increasing prestige. An Englishman, John Smeaton, is credited with the honour of the next important development, for he employed a little-known cementing material-natural cement-in constructing the Eddystone lighthouse in 1756. It was called 'natural' cement because it was made from a natural rock with no additions of other materials. The process consisted of calcining an argillaceous limestone at a comparatively low temperature and grinding the product to a fine powder. Care was exercised to keep the temperature low, and any material burned to the clinkering point was thrown away, although such material was, as learned at a later time, Portland cement.

The microstructure evolution kinetics of aluminum alloy B206 during artificial aging has been investigated using non-isothermal calorimetry. A combination of differential-scanning calorimetry (DSC) and tensile tests have been utilized to develop an Avrami model to predict the precipitation kinetics as a function of the thermal processing parameters. The Avrami coefficients, found based on a Kissinger analysis, compare well against those reported in the literature for aluminum-copper alloys. The rapid precipitation kinetics predicted by the Avrami model at temperatures higher than 200°C were assessed through a qualitative comparison against hardness measurement results. In contrast to the continuous hardening observed at 150°C, the material softens with continuing heat treatment at 250°C resulting in an overaged state. This can be attributed to the rapid precipitation kinetics at this temperature, leading to the termination of the precipitation-hardening effects at early stages of artificial aging.

As of November 2012, the Alberta government listed 53 oil and gas, oil sands, and mining construction projects either proposed or currently under construction. These industrial plant construction projects have an estimated value greater than 105 million dollars. A common construction method employed for industrial plant projects is fast-track construction, which is used to reduce construction time. Contractors begin fast-track construction with highly generic scheduling information. This high level schedule turns into a lower level schedule as more detailed information becomes available. From a contractor?s perspective, a challenge faced using fast-track construction is the visualization of generic and constantly changing project schedules. This paper discusses the use of a Plant Information Modeling (PIM) system, designed to create a 4D animation to visualize project schedules for fast-track industrial plant construction projects. The proposed PIM system creates a modified project schedule by obtaining specific information from a generic construction schedule. Obtaining the information involves grouping schedule activities in accordance with the level of detail in a 3D model, and the level of detail in a project schedule. The modified project schedule is then used in conjunction with a 3D model to simulate the construction sequence in the form of a 4D animation. This allows for 4D visualization of project activities, installation dates, and crane movements. Furthermore, as engineering reaches completion, the PIM system creates a streamlined channel for schedule information updates to be easily uploaded into the model for a more accurate 4D visualization. Through analyzing a nonmodular construction case study, this paper discusses the successes and benefits of the PIM system for 4D visualization, such as increased productivity, shortened construction time, increased constructability, and decreased field costs.
