The Mouska Mine uses primarily shrinkage mining to extract the narrow veins that contain its mineralization. Mining is currently occurring on levels 12 to 14, reaching depths of 800 m below surface. Although the mine is not considered ?deep?, no backfill is available to fill empty stopes and certain areas remain open for over 500 m in height. As only narrow sill pillars remain to separate the levels, a highstress environment is created. Seismic activity was first observed when mining reached Level 11 (600 m deep) and has steadily increased since then. Seismic activity is associated with the highly-stressed sill and rib pillars; no geological structures have demonstrated significant seismic potential to date. In response to this increase in activity, pillar dimensions have been increased with depth and dynamic ground support has been installed. Seismic and pressure monitoring have been implemented, among other types of instrumentation. The following paper further describes the challenges associated with using conventional methods in the high-stress environment typical of the Canadian Shield, as well as several solutions implemented to mitigate these risks.

"The Gondor Zn-Ag-Pb-Cu deposit is a stratabound massive sulphide lens occurring within Archean volcaniclastic rocks of the Yellowknife Supergroup. The deposit is located in the west-central portion of the Slave Structural Province, approximately 350 km north of Yellowknife.Initial diamond drilling at Gondor has outlined a steeply dipping, L-shaped, folded, massive sulphide body, which may be traced over a strike length of approximately 800 m, and to a depth of 350 m. True widths of up to 40 m have been intersected in the thickest part of the deposit. Preliminary estimates suggest that the deposit contains a minimum of 7.5 million tonnes grading 6% Zn, 50 g/tonne Ag and less than I% combined Cu and Pb. In addition, significant gold, grading up to 2.8 g/tonne, occurs in some parts of the deposit. The mineralization is open both down-dip and along strike.The Gondor deposit lies conformably within a predominantly east-west striking, north-facing sequence of felsic to intermediate volcaniclastic rocks. Coarse fragmental rocks are abundant in the hanging wall, whereas ash and lapilli-tuffs predominate in the footwall. The main structural feature in the area is a large-scale, steeply northeast-plunging, Z-shaped fold. The sulphide mineralization lies within the synformal portion of this fold, with the thickest part of the deposit coinciding with its hinge zone. Several episodes of faulting have also affected the local stratigraphy.The wallrocks of the Gondor deposit were hydrothermally altered prior to the onset of medium-grade regional metamorphism. A halo of altered rocks surrounds the massive sulphide lens, with no apparent difference in the degree of alteration between the hanging wall and footwall strata. The alteration zone is characterized by the addition of MgO and K20 and by the depletion of Na20 and CaO. These changes are reflected in the mineralogy of the altered wallrocks by local enrichment in chlorite, biotite, muscovite and cordierite.The mineralized zone is medium- to coarse-grained, well-banded and is composed largely of pyrite, quartz, and sphalerite with subordinate galena and chalcopyrite. Preliminary studies of metal distribution indicate that a lateral zonation is present, with lead enrichment in the central part of the deposit, and copper enrichment toward both ends. Stringer-type copper mineralization has not yet been discovered in the footwall of the Gondor deposit."

Diavik Diamond Mines Inc. (DDMI) has treated systems development as an integral part of the construction project when it built Canada?s second diamond mine. Fully aware that the proper collection and processing of operational data is needed to drive business decisions during production and planning, key Performance Indicators (KPIs) were defined to effectively manage operations when the mine went into production. The Production Information Management System (PIMS) allows KPIs to be measured, reported, and transferred to other systems in a reliable and convenient manner. PIMS provides a mechanism to collect real time production data from the various control systems around the site and acts as a tool to ?drill-down? and establish the important cause-effect relationships that impact the value of a KPI. Thus PIMS provides a data collection, storage, management, and an environment in which cause-effect relationships can be analysed and statistically verified. This understanding of the real cause-effect relationships, close to the source of the data and in the context of the operation, can be used to improve both operations and maintenance performance. The PIMS includes the PI Database implementation, its associated external interfaces with the various Control Systems, Cleaning Packaging Weighing System, Environmental System, Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) System, and Diamond Tracking System (DTS), as well as laboratory data collection, custom applications (downtime tracking, data reconciliation) and user clients. The interface with the EAM system provides material flow quantities and equipment availability on which the plant performance reports are based. The transfer of equipment usage to the EAM system is fed into the maintenance notifications and work orders functionality in the EAM. The environmental system interface provides the mechanism for capturing water consumption data required to generate the various regulatory reports. The interface to the cleaning-packaging-weighing system provides the mechanism for capturing batch data for transfer to the DTS for diamond product tracking at the production splitting facility in Yellowknife. The PIMS lab application provides a means of getting sample data into the system for critical metallurgical metrics, and the data reconciliation application provides a means of manually verifying the data before it is published or passed onto other systems.

"Roof bolts are the primary means of roof support in underground mines in the United States. Presently, post installation loads are measured on about 10% of the expansion anchor and combination bolts by using standard torque wrenches that Unit the accuracy of the measurements to about ±30%. No system has been available for measuring the loads generated on full-column resin grouted bolts. Mine roof bolts are long, slender, non-uniformly sized, roughly forged, and placed in a corrosive environment, creating obstacles for researchers trying to utilize ultrasonic reflection techniques to measure strain. A complete measurement system has now been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Denver Research Center. This system is being used successfully in determining loads measured on expansion anchor and combination bolting systems, examining the transfer mechanics of full-column, resin-grouted bolts, and measuring loads generated on bolts in an underground roadway support system.IntroductionMillions of roof bolts are used each year to provide structural support in underground U.S. metal, non-metal, and coal mines. Approximately 45% of the bolts used are expansion anchor, 45% are resin-assisted combination or full-column resin-grouted, and 10% are friction anchored. The effectiveness of these bolting types is dependent on a number of factors including rock density, bolt length, in situ stresses, rock properties, bolt pattern, installation tension, etc. When implementing expansion anchor and resin assisted combination bolts , installation and post-installation tension, or load, is a major determinant of support quality and subsequent behaviour of the reinforced roof. The method by which these systems carry roof loads is well understood and documented(1,2).The importance of these installation and long-term bolt tension measurements is well recognized and are required in the federal government regulations(3). A statistical sample of the bolts, lout of 4 during installation and lout of 10 inby the last open crosscut, is required to be measured using current torque wrench technology. The disadvantages of this system are the disturbance and weakening of the anchorage and limitations of accuracy to approximately ± 30%. The method by which resin-grouted bolting systems carry roof loads is much less understood, mainly because testing procedures used to evaluate point-anchor systems are not effective on resin-grouted bolts.Due to these problems, the U.S. Bureau of Mines designed a measurement technique that provided a highly accurate, low cost-per- bolt system that led to the development of ultrasonic pulse echo instrumentation. The original system was designed to measure the tension only on expansion anchor bolts. Recent developments and system modifications have permitted measurements on resin-assisted and full-column resin-grouted bolts. The use of these types of support systems has been increasing steadily in underground coal mines.The development of this instrumentation has provided laboratory and field results that help to explain the mechanics and relationships between the applied loads and the interaction between the grouted bolt system consisting of the bolt tendon, grout, and rock."

In this study, flotation of fine galena, chalcopyrite and pyrite was performed after grinding with different extent of oxidation-reduction condition adjusted by grinding media. Sodium dithionite and iron ions were added in mill to simulate pulp potentials and iron oxidation species produced by grinding media, respectively. The types and quantities of the metal oxidation species on mineral surfaces were determined by EDTA extractions, while the surface electrical properties of minerals and interaction of different types of metal oxidation species were studied by zeta potential measurements. It was found that the nature and concentration of the absorbed metal oxidation species were dependent on oxidation atmosphere controlled by the iron amount of grinding media. These species interacted with each other and had an important role in determining flotation of fine galena and chalcopyrite as well as activation of fine pyrite by lead and copper.

"For the last three years (1967-9) the value of the output of mineral resources in the Province of Ontario exceeded one billion dollars per year. To produce this great wealth, it was necessary for the mining industry in Ontario to dispose of an estimated 80 million tons of waste mill tailings. Some of these tailings were returned underground but the greater proportion was disposed of above ground in lakes, watercourses, marshy areas and in engineered impoundment basins. This volume of tailings, if accumulated in one location would cover an area of 1000 acres to a height of almost thirty feet. The provision of proper disposal of the waste mill tailings in a manner such that they will not create problems in the environment is one of the costs which must be borne from the extraction of such a wealth from our mineral resources. It is principally the potential water pollution which may occur as a result of the indiscriminate discharges of waste mill tailings which is of concern to the Ontario Water Resources Commission.ONTARIO WATER RESOURCES COMMISSIONThe Ontario Water Resources Commission was formed in 1956 and operates under the Ontario Water Resources Commission Act. Operational monitoring of slope stability can be achieved by space based InSAR monitoring platforms. Natural and man-made rock slopes are monitored using a novel stack-based InSAR method that exploits both persistent point scatterers (PS) as well as coherent distributed scatterers (DS) such as areas of pavement and sparsely vegetated surfaces. The new method, Homogenous Distributed Scatterer (HDS)-InSAR identifies InSAR targets by using adaptive multilooking of statistically homogenous pixel neighbourhoods combined with thresholding the differential temporal coherence of each target candidate with respect to its surroundings. HDS-InSAR preserves PS and therefore forms a direct generalization to our proven DualScale-PSI method. The density of HDS exceeds that of PS by more than an order of magnitude often providing essentially continuous coverage over urban and industrial landscapes featuring a mix of infrastructure with mostly bare soils or rock surfaces. The improved coverage enables better definition of surface motion and underlying geology, which will lead to superior interpretation of the geophysical mechanisms causing the surface deformation, e.g. through improved integration with 3D deformation modeling. We illustrate the performance of our new HDS-InSAR method compared to DualScale-PSI using displacement results from Vancouver, Canada; Bingham mine, USA; and the Palabora mine, South Africa.

Brief History of Discovery and Early Development In the first half of the nineteenth century, the only authority on the Pacific coast between the Columbia river and Alaska was exercised by the Hudson's Bay Company, who had established a series of forts and trading stations on the coast from the Columbia north to Millbank sound. The Hudson's Bay Company were chiefly interested in the fur industry, and the large influx of settlers from the eastern United States into the territory now known as the States of Oregon and Washington, about 1840, not only interfered with the fur business but involved the question whether the territory should be under the British or the American flag. Anticipating the possibility, later realized, of losing control of this area, the Company, in 1845, established their main fort and trading centre on the southern end of Vancouver island under the name of Fort Camosun; shortly afterwards changing the name to Fort Victoria. Realizing that their former policy of discouraging all attempts to develop any other business than the fur industry had lost them several hundred thousand square miles, the Hudson's Bay Company now set about encouraging settlers in the vicinity of Fort Victoria by disposing of lands to suitable parties and also to those in the employ of the Company. The usual pioneering stage was passed through with the starting of small sawmills, grain mills, etc., and the incidental work accompanying such efforts. Any coal required for blacksmithing or other purposes was brought from England around Cape Horn by the few ships that visited the Pacific Coast. About 1849, an Indian who was having his gun repaired by a blacksmith in Fort Victoria asked about the "black stones" used in the fire and, on being told that the "black stones" had to be brought a great distance, he informed the blacksmith that there was plenty of the same stone where his people lived. This information was immediately given to an official of the Hudson's Bay Company who talked with the Indian and told him that if he would bring some of the "black stones" he would get his gun repaired free and a present of a bottle of rum. Nothing more was heard of this coal until April of the following year, when the Indian came into Fort Victoria with his canoe loaded with coal, which was tested and found to be of good quality. It is reported that the Indian got his bottle of rum.

Oxidized sulfidic tailings contain significant amounts of accumulated acidity in the form of water-soluble secondary sulfate minerals and thus constitute long-term sources of acid drainage at many metal mining sites. As part of site remediation activities, alkaline amendments are often added to the oxidized tailings to increase the pH and immobilize the metals. This study assessed the advantages and limitations of using lime mud, a byproduct of Kraft pulp mills rich in calcium carbonate (> 90 wt. %), as alkaline amendment. The inorganic and organic constituents of lime mud samples were quantified. Leachable impurities were determined by the TCLP method. The performance of lime mud was compared to that of reagent grade quicklime (CaO) and calcite (CaCO3). Tailings treated with lime mud or calcite have strong buffering capacities and remain at neutral pH conditions (pH ~ 6.7) for long times. In contrast, tailings treated with quicklime have a very low buffering capacity, and their pH decreases with time. Furthermore, lime mud has finer particle sizes and thus a greater specific surface area than most forms of commercially available calcite, which results in enhanced reactivity. Dissolved metal concentrations are similar in tailings slurries treated with lime mud or calcite. This study suggests that lime mud is an environmentally and economically attractive alkaline amendment for oxidized mine tailings.

"The zone of economic interest at H.J. Joel Gold Mine is the VS5/Beatrix Composite Reef, a quartz-pebble conglomerate of Archean age. The reef occurs at the base of the Eldorado Formation, Central Rand Group, of the Witwatersrand Supergroup. At least three stratigraphically distinct conglomerates form this economic zone. In order of deposition these are the Footwall, Beatrix, and the VS5/Beatrix reefs. The Footwall and Beatrix reefs are equated with the Aandenk Formation with transport directions toward the northwest, whereas the VS5lBeatrix Reef is of Eldorado age, with transport directions toward the south. The change in the drainage direction was caused by a major basin-wide tectonic event that occurred prior to the deposition of the Eldorado Formation. The Beatrix Reef was formed in a proximal, braided, fluvial environment by a process of aggrading gravel bars between channelways. The VS5/Beatrix Reef was formed by the desegregation of pre-existing Beatrix Reef with the introduction of new material containing much shale detritus and is seen to have been deposited in a more -distal, braided, fluvial environment, similar to the Beatrix Reef.The average gold concentrations are different for each conglomerate; the Beatrix at 32.1 ppm Au, the Footwall at 24.4 ppm Au, and the VS5/Beatrix at only 12.4 ppm Au. A sedimentary gold concentrating process related to higher energy braid channels was primarily responsible for these high gold grades. Not only the basal unconformity surface, but also, internal degredation surfaces, were prime sites for concentration. An understanding of the spatial distribution of these differing conglomerates and their braid channels forming the economic reef zone is necessary in predicting ore grades for future mining."

"Although the centennial of the Peirce-Smith (PS) converting process has recently been celebrated, the technology has essentially not changed much since its inception. PS converting is used extensively in the Cu, Ni and PGM industry to remove iron and sulphur from a molten matte phase. A typical PS converting process would use low pressure air supplied by a blower to bubble air through the molten bath. This bubbling injection regime is inherently inefficient from a process and energy consideration. In the late 70’s and early 80’s, Brimacombe and co-workers demonstrated at both laboratory and plant scales that sonic injection (jetting regime) into copper or nickel converters could reduce or eliminate the above hindrances characteristic of PS converting. Since then, in spite of these successes, very little industrial applications have made headway in the converting process of non-ferrous metal mattes on a commercial scale. As part of its operational improvement and energy reduction program (process efficiency), Lonmin Platinum decided to conduct a full scale industrial evaluation of sonic injection using air only to establish if punchless, high efficiency sonic injection was feasible in its small 3.05 × 4.57 m converters (10’ × 15’). A plant trial was run for four weeks in one of its three converters. This paper discusses the plant demonstration with a focus on the experience acquired by Lonmin together with the key learnings from the trials. Reference will also be made to the commercial aspects of a full scale implementation of sonic injection in all three converters in the smelter. "A multielement (Au, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, c-, Ag, As, Hg, Co, and S) geochemical rock sampling survey was carried out in 1977 in the Munro Township area of Ontario to assess the application of rock geochemistry for gold exploration in the region. Detailed sampling with analysis for gold and arsenic was done in 1986 in the immediate vicinity of the Croesus Mine.Samples of quartz veins and rock formations were taken in regional traverses and in more detail near old showings, prospect pits, and trenches. Quartz, graywacke, carbonate rock, and rhyolite contain the highest concentrations of gold for samples taken away from the old workings. Ultramafic rocks and gabbro have uniformly low gold. Basalt samples have slightly higher geometric means, but individual samples contain high gold concentrations. Multielement highs are mostly in mineralized quartz samples. Gold distribution is independent of other elements in most other rock types. Samples near old showings possess elevated concentrations of gold indicating that prospecting for individual mineral deposits by bedrock sampling is feasible. Concentrations of gold greater than 100 ppb are mostly within 30 m of old workings. Those samples which contain greater than 1000 ppb Au were obtained from quartz veins, basalt, graywacke, and rhyolite.High concentrations of gold were not notably concentrated near the Contact Fault although some anomalous samples came from near and on both sides of the fault. Arsenic concentrations are elevated near the Contact Fault. Detailed sampling near the Croesus Mine suggests that gold was introduced with faulting, alteration and quartz veining. Gold and arsenic have been added to the wallrock in the vicinity of the main veins."

"Discounted cash flow analysis provides a means of relating the magnitude of expected future cash profits to the magnitude of the initial cash investment required to purchase an asset or to develop it for commercial production. The objectives of discounted cash flow analysis are to determine:.. The net present value of a stream of expected future cash revenues and expenditures... The rate of return which the expected future cash flows will yield on a given level of initial cash investment.In the case of mineral properties, discounted cash flow analysis is generally accepted as the preferred method of valuation, whenever sufficient data are available to permit its reasoned application. Sufficient data are required to support estimation of all of the individual elements of cash revenue and cash expenditure which will be associated with the development and operation of the property, up to the end of its estimated life. It is the accuracy of these input estimates which determines the validity of the resulting determinations of profitability and rate of return on invested capital.In undertaking any discounted cash flow analysis, it is important to recognize certain fundamental attributes of the mining industty:.. The basis of any mineral development is the existence of an ore reserve... Costs are determined by the number of tonnes mined and processed, while revenues are determined by the number of pounds or ounces of metal produced. The two are related by the recovered grade of the ore... Profit is typically more sensitive to changes in revenue than it is to changes in cost... Commodity price is a principal determinant of revenue, but it is also the factor with which is associated the greatest level of financial risk.In the end, of all of the factors which must be considered in the discounted cash flow valuation of a mineral property, the most significant are the reliability of the reserve estimate, particularly with respect to recovered grade, the price at which the product is to be sold, and the risk of not maintaining the projected level of price."

This paper considers thickening mine tailings to dense non-segregating slurry or paste for surface disposal. The driving motivation for this initiative is the elimination of ponds, reduction in containment dams and significant decrease in water being sent to the tailings basin. This inherently reduces risks of environmental and structural failure. Some of the engineering challenges in creating a stable stack of thickened or paste tailings are identified, and possible field and laboratory testing techniques in support of design are discussed. Finally, the integration of monitoring activities into the ongoing management of the surface disposal site is considered.

"This paper discusses the changing nature of reserve/consumption ratios, using data from Canadian operations and focussing particularly on copper.IntroductionStudies in world metal consumption and world metal reserves are done regularly by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the German Federal Institute of Geosciences and Raw Materials, and other institutions. Formerly, on the basis of these data, the following figures were calculated:• a static lifetime of reserves-reserves at year end divided by the consumption of the previous year;• a semidynamic lifetime of reserves-reserves at year assumed constant growth rate.These figures were severely criticized because they were purely theoretical and did not consider the availability of the raw materials.Recent practice is to calculate reserve/consumption ratios (R/C ratios) for periods(1) or for different years(2,3) and to interpret the trend. For base metals, these R/C ratios are increasing (Table 1). This had led to the conclusion that today the relative availability of base metal reserves has increased as compared to 10 or 15 years ago(4,5) As there are normally numerous deposits for each commodity, the anticipated production rates of deposits are irrelevant to this conclusion as long as the statistical distribution of possible production rates does not change significantly.The above conclusion is only justified if the quality and the nature of the data base remain the same. This is certainly the case for the consumption data. It is also assumed for the quality of the reserve figures, which usually take into account only proven and probable reserves. For the nature of the reserve figures, however, this does not seem to be true.Undoubtedly, the reserves increased in absolute terms between 1966 and 1978. To put the absolute reserve figures into perspective, it is common, as said above, to compare them with the mine production, which increased in the free world between 1966 and 1978; e.g. for copper by 40%, for Pb by 17% and for zinc by 36%. However, the reserves are also influenced by other factors, such as average size of the mines, changes in the grade of the mined ore, price-to-cost relationships and the like.The purpose of this paper is to examine the nature of the reserve figures in more detail. Because the completeness of mining data published in Canada is rather exceptional, Canadian .data serve as an example and it is assumed that the conclusions can be extrapolated to other mining countries or at least to those with free market systems."

Introduction The Beattie mine is the first of its character to be exploited in Quebec. It is primarily a large low-grade gold deposit containing values which a few years ago would not have been considered as ore. Much interest is attached to this development as its success may mean a greatly enlarged scope to gold mining in Canada on deposits which have formerly been considered worthless. Because of its potential importance as a pioneer in low-grade gold mining, the Quebec Bureau of Mines decided to make a careful detailed study of the Beattie in the hope not only of assisting in its development, but of stimulating the search for similar essential geological conditions in other parts of the Province. This paper is a summary of the results obtained during two months on the property in 1932, supplemented by a few trips underground in 1933. The full report will appear in the Annual Report of the Quebec Bureau of Mines for 1932, Part C. Location and Means of Access: The Beattie ore-body is situated two miles west and one half mile north of the centre of Duparquet township, and approximately 22 miles north 28° west of the town of Noranda. Until the fall of 1932, access to the property was from LaSarre, on the Canadian National railway, over a thirty-mile water route with one portage 600 feet long; about 2,000 tons of machinery and supplies were taken in by that route. An automobile road, nine miles long, now connects the property with the Makamik highway, and a narrow-gauge railway, without ballast, gives outlet for concentrates from the mill to the C.N.R. tracks of the Rouyn-Taschereau line, nineteen miles distant.

Production is achieved by a method of trackless, continuous mining of rooms, leaving pillars for natural support. Introduction Development of oil and gas is still centred in the Province of Alberta, much as it was when C. C. Ross read a paper on this subject three years ago at the Annual General Meeting in Montreal; but so far as gas is concerned, its early production in Saskatchewan seems now assured. The three years that have elapsed since Mr. Ross' paper have witnessed a growth in the world's production of oil that has created a potential supply out of all proportion to the demand for petroleum products, and one that has resisted the most energetic efforts of the industry entirely to control. The natural result has been very much to retard the active prospecting of new structures in the Prairie Provinces with any immediate view to oil production, although the same factor has not hindered the search for gas to the same extent. One consequence has been to divert the attention of organized oil operators from wildcat drilling to more detailed geological investigation than had hitherto been customary, sometimes accompanied by test drilling with a view to the elucidation of geological structure rather than to the immediate development of production which at the present is not needed. Nevertheless, in spite of the growth of this phase of oil prospecting - which the writer would be the last not to welcome as a very real blessing and of far greater value than indiscriminate wildcat drilling in either the complex structures of the foothills or the simpler but largely concealed formations of the plains- it is most satisfactory to have to record that in these three years the growth of production both of naphtha and the heavier crude-oil has kept pace with the by no means inconsiderable growth in the production and utilization of natural gas.

Jusqu?à son acquisition par MM René Dufour et Alain Robin en 1994, les claims miniers et les droits de surface de la propriété étaient détenus depuis 1953 par la société Québec Columbium, une filiale de la socité américaine Kennecott Copper qui y a réalisé d?importants travaux miniers. En 1995 la compagnie NIOCAN inc. fut incorporée; ses actions furent inscrites à la bourse de Montréal en 1997, et à la bourse de Toronto en décembre 1999. Jusqu?à maintenant, NIOCAN a investi plus de 7 millions de dollars dans le développement de sa propriété minière de niobium située à quelques 40 kilomètres au nord-ouest de Montréal. Le haut rendement économique des deux gisements principaux que compte exploiter la compagnie, le S-60 et le HWM-2, a été établie par des études de faisabilité effectuées par le consortium Met-Chem/SNC-Lavalin. La mission que s?est donnée NIOCAN inc. consiste à mettre en production ses deux gisements et à devenir ainsi productrice de ferroniobium dans les plus brefs délais. Figure 2 Le projet est présentement à un stade avancé d?obtention du certificat d?autorisation du ministère de l?Environnement. À plus long terme, la compagnie compte aussi exploiter les sous-produits de ses gisements (apatite, forsterite, magnétite, calcaire et terres rares).

"In Catalonia, between the 10th century and 1878, some installations were developed which at first were called ""factories"" and later ""fargas"", since they manufactured iron and steel of low carbon content. Because of its excellent quality, the fame of this metal spread from Catalonia to many countries. Fargas were started in Corsica, the Low Countries, Germany, Oriental India, Madagascar, Finland and along the rivers Orinoco and Mississippi among others. The extractive process used in these fargas has passed into history as the ""Catalan Farga Process"", ""Catalan Process"", or just ""Farga Catalana"". With this technology, raw material was obtained for the fabrication of tools, nails, weapons, grilles, etc. to supply the national and export markets. Aside from meteorites and native iron, found as metallic nodules in basalts in Greenland and Palestine, the ancient civilizations, which had no means to reach the fusion temperature of iron (1535°C), obtained iron by a direct process. Similar processes were used until quite recently (1930s) by certain tribes in Central Africa; holes in the ground were filled with iron ore and coal, and combustion encouraged by blowing air by mouth or with bellows made of animal skins. Thus without melting the iron it is possible to reduce the mineral and obtain a porous and impure metallic mass, which is purified on forging by mechanical squeezing. With a process very likely similar, the famous column at Dehli weighing 6.4 m.t. was built about 300 B.C."
