The electric power conduit (EPC) in Korea has been constructed since 1978. Facing the challenge of safety and sustainability of the EPC, it is urgent to develop an inspection strategy and maintenance system for the structure based on the concept of life-cycle management. This paper introduces the newly developed mobile inspection and diagnostic system of the EPC. The novel aspect of this particular system is the integration of non-destructive mobile inspection techniques with BIM (Building Information Modeling) and LBS (Location-Based Service). BIM is an ideal tool and platform for developing an inspection and diagnostic system, and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a useful tool to construct USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Network) for LBS. The goal of this research is to establish an EPC inspection and diagnostic system concept based on BIM and LBS using RFID. In this research, a BIM model of OPENTBM tunnel for EPC will be established to show the integration of 3D CAD with the inspection data. An EPC?s maintenance database, which includes the deterioration types of the structure, inspection records, and repair methods, was designed to interact with the BIM. The system will be implemented by the BIM with the related database, in which the construction geometry and all related information are stored. The proposed system was designed to utilize the inspection and diagnostic system under the USN environment using RFID in EPC directly.

"A Ventilation on Demand (VOD) system has been optimized and maintained at Glencore’s Nickel Rim South Mine (NRS) in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada for the past seven years. The system monitors and controls air quality and quantity through real-time, dynamic automation of primary fans, secondary fans, automated airflow regulators, and air monitoring instrumentation with VentSim™ CONTROL, a VOD software. This paper will focus on the implementation of testing procedures and system maintenance methods. Overall, the results show a consistent reduction in energy usage.INTRODUCTIONThe Ventilation on Demand (VOD) system at Glencore’s Nickel Rim South (NRS) mine in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, involves the control of two 2,980 kW centrifugal surface exhaust fans with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), three 335 kW vane-axial surface intake fans with VFDs, 21 automated airflow regulators, six automated dampers, seven automatic doors and 198 underground auxiliary fans with ON/OFF starters. Additionally, the system monitors airflow at 48 locations, carbon monoxide (CO) at 40 locations, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at 21 locations, and dry bulb and wet bulb temperature at 21 locations. The VOD system is also integrated with a tagging and tracking system to modulate the ventilation system automatically and in real time according to the presence and position of the personnel and vehicles. The tracking system comprises of 75 vehicle tags with diesel status and hydraulic status (ON or OFF), 440 personnel tags, and 200 tracking zones. Finally, it also involves the configuration and updating of 55 level plan and interactive procedures and 24 daily scheduled events. NRS currently uses VentSim™ CONTROL, Ekahau Tracking and PI Datalink to control, monitor, and configure their VOD system."

Marine tailings disposal may in some cases be the best solution to one of mining’s major environmental problems. The public standing of this solution is poor, partly because of past bad practices. Among the tailings problems spreading of super-fines and toxic substances stand out. The two are often interrelated as heavy metals, insoluble to sea water, tend to adsorb on fines and spread piggyback on them. Only one paper seen, has addressed the mineralogy of fine particles in suspension. The topic was a secondary tailings deposit. Studies on the sedimentation of fines in large river estuaries show that different minerals sediment sequentially as the salinity of the river increase. Mineralogy in the particle size range where particle separation takes place, has so far, naturally been in focus for the mineral processors. Next to nothing is known about the fines which may cause environmental problems. Tailings disposal has, due to its complexity, to a large extent been taken over by specialists in other fields, biologists, engineering geologists, chemists. The basics of the subject ought also to be given more input by the mineral processing community. A drawn out battle about tailings discharge into some fjords has taken place in Norway. The detractors focus at fine particles (could be dangerous nanoparticles) spreading and emphasize the effects. Calculation is simple: 5 million tonnes tailings annually discharged, containing 1 wt. % < 1µm determined by laser diffraction, results in 50 000 tonnes of nanoparticles let loose in the environment. The industry`s difficulty to answer, is lack of basic research on this topic. Test work to develop a methodology to address the problem is described. One thing the mineral processors know is that final tailings may be comprised of tailings from separate separation processes, with different properties, some of which may require special treatment. One tailings stream from a Norwegian mine is investigated in such a context.

"The present study investigated the texture transition during secondary recrystallization in the AA5182 sheet. During the initial stage of annealing, the texture showed a weak Cube orientation as the primary recrystallization texture. During the secondary recrystallization with abnormal grain growth, the area ratio of the {hkl} <011> orientations increased by consuming the other orientations. The texture transition was calculated by the 2-D Monte Carlo simulation with the misorientation dependency. When the higher grain boundary mobility was set in the specific range of the high angle misorientation, the orientation preferential growth of the RW {100} <011> orientation was reproduced. However, other {hkl} <110> orientations could not be well reproduced by the misorientation dependency.INTRODUCTION Crystal orientation and texture are important factors for aluminum sheet products from the standpoint of mechanical property, formability and isotropy. The recrystallization texture results from the orientation preferential growth from the rolling deformation microstructure and the texture (Alvi, Cheong, Suni, Weiland, & Rollett, 2008). Texture development has been a topic of intense research for decades with advances in analysis methods, e.g., orientation mapping (OIM) and computer simulations (Fjeldberg & Marthinsen, 2010; Ivasishin, Shevchenko, Vasiliev, & Semiatin, 2006). The grain boundary characteristic is considered to be a key for the orientation preferential growth. In the case of the recrystallization from the deformed microstructure, not only the grain boundary characteristic, but also the dislocation density and the subgrain size affect the nucleation and the grain growth (Engler, Löchte, & Hirsch, 2007). On the other hand, in the case of secondary recrystallization, the dislocation density and the subgrain size can be ignored and the effect of the grain boundary characteristic can play a significant role in the grain growth. There is intense research about the texture development during secondary recrystallization in aluminum alloys and it was reported that coarse {hkl} <011> grains were formed during the secondary recrystallization (Suk, Shin, & Huh, 2006; Rios, & Gottstein, 2001). However, the mechanism of forming the {hkl} <011> grains has not been fully clarified. In the present study, the effect of the grain boundary characteristic on the orientation preferential growth was investigated by EBSD analysis and Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation."

"The Giant claims are on the west side of Yellowknife bay about 1 ½ miles north of the settlement of Yellowknife. They were staked in 1935 by prospectors in the employ of Burwash Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited, and were transferred to Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited, in 1937, on the incorporation of that Company. During the period 1936 to 1940 a number of surface discoveries were investigated by trenching, test pitting, and diamond drilling. A shallow inclined shaft was sunk on the Brock zone, a system of narrow and irregular quartz veins, and some 75 tons of high-grade ore was mined and shipped to the Trail smelter. In 1943 management control was acquired by Frobisher Exploration Company, Limited. An intensive campaign of diamond drilling was commenced in January 1944 and carried on continuously for 2 years. This drilling indicated the presence of substantial gold orebodies lying within well-developed shear zones. Two shafts, 1 ¼ miles apart, were sunk during 1946 and underground development started on two of the orebodies.The claims are underlain largely by rocks of the Yellowknife greenstone belt, which extends from the shore of Great Slave lake along the west side of Yell ow knife bay and northward . The most conspicuous structural features are the steeply dipping late faults. The chief of these is the West Bay, which bisects the greenstone belt at an acute angle and crosses the southern part of the Giant group. At the 'big bend' near the west boundary of the claims there is a remarkably sudden change in the strike of the fault, from about 12° N.W. to about 3° N.E. The apparent horizontal displacement along this fault is of the order of 3 miles, with the east side moved relatively north. There are also a large number of lesser faults with apparent horizontal displacements of a few feet up to l,70J feet for the Townsite fault. Most of these faults trend north to northwest. Surface examination indicates that, at least for most of them, the movement corresponds to that along the West Bay fault, that is, the east side moved relatively north. According to the available evidence, all or most•of the movem:nt along the West Bay fault and along the lesser faults was post-ore. Late diabase dyk:s that cut through ore-bearing shear zones, with chilled margins in contact with the mineralized material, are apparently displaced to the same extent as earlier geological markers. The measurement of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from primary aluminium production and inventory of these emissions of carbon dioxide and PF Cs have become an important issue for primary aluminium producers. Most global producers have either voluntary emission goals or emissions limits established through national regulatory requirements. International good practices for inventory of these emissions for national governments are established through the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The current good practices, last updated in 2000, are being revised and are expected to be adopted by governments in the spring of 2006. There are a number of changes expected in the guidance that will impact how facilities account for their GHG emissions. This paper describes the changes to the guidance and the implications of these changes for aluminium producers.

The Argyle diamond mine is located in the Kimberley region in the northern part of Western Australia at approximately 16°43&apos;S, 128°23&apos;E in subtropical bush/shrub savannah. The 46 ha (113 acres) pipe is situated in the Halls Creek mobile zone, which was cratonized about 1800 Ma ago and adjoins the Kimberley Block, a plateau upheld by Early to Middle Proterozoic rocks underlain by presumably Archean basement. The crater and upper pipe zones of the diatreme have been preserved within tilted and faulted strata of Middle to Late Proterozoic age. Its age of intrusion is about 1178 Ma. The diatreme rock is not kimberlite but olivine lamproite which was not recognized as a primary diamond host rock until 1978. The Kalumburu Joint Venture, a syndicate of local and overseas mining companies, started in 1972 to prospect the Kimberley Block with a modest annual prospecting budget of $125,000. Annual expenditure doubled each year and reached $1 million in 1975 after which CRA took over management of the newly-formed Ashton Joint Venture with an annual expenditure of $2 million (all figures are in current US dollars). The Argyle diatreme was found near the end of the eighth field season and after a total expenditure of $12 million. Annual production is about 34 million carats which places Australia as the world&apos;s number one diamond-producing country, although, because of the low value per carat, it is number four in terms of total annual value. The global cost required for a major diamond mine is between $300 and $400 million, with a discovery every 10 to 12 years. Because Canada contains large areas of prospective platform rocks underlain by Archean basement it is likely that a major diamond deposit does exist there. It is probable that it will be found before the end of this decade and exploration expenditure may be in the order of $100 million.

"In this study, flow-through experiments in fractured rocks have been conducted under different stress, temperature, and pH conditions so as to understand the evolution of permeability induced by these conditions. Throughout the experiments, the confining pressures and temperatures are well-controlled. Effluent concentrations are also measured for the ten elements of Si, Al, K, Fe, Ca, Na, Mg, Ti, S, and Cl that are included mainly in the targeted rocks. In the early stage of the experiments, the fracture permeability measured abruptly decreases with time, and subsequently reaches quasi-steady state within a relatively short period. In contrast, the permeability in the intact rocks monotonically increases with time. The permeability increase and decrease are attributed likely to the relative dominance of mineral dissolution in the pore spaces and to that of mineral dissolution/crushing at the propping asperities within the fracture and/or mineral precipitation onto the free surfaces, respectively. The evolving rates and magnitudes of the permeability are likely to be controlled by the stress exerted over the contacting asperities, temperatures, and pH of the permeant. Thus, this complicated behavior should be attributed to the coupled chemically- and mechanically-induced effects, which should be examined in more detail for longer period to contribute to the safe entombment of radioactive wastes. INTRODUCTIONUnderstanding of the flow and transport characteristics of porous/fractured rocks is required for the safe and long-term geological isolation of energy-related by-products (i.e., high level radioactive wastes and anthropogenic CO2). Notably, under relatively high temperature and stress conditions, mechanically- and chemically-mediated processes may alter the pore structures in rocks, resulting in an irreversible evolution of the flow and transport behavior. Augmentation in permeability may result from mechanical dilation due to shearing and mineral dissolution within the pore spaces, while reduction may result from reversible or irreversible mechanical compaction, mineral dissolution at the contacting areas, and clogging of pore spaces by precipitation of secondary minerals."

By now, the concept of remotely controlling heavy equipment in underground mines has become commonplace. Personnel safety is the biggest justifier for remote control, followed by an inherent cost saving (in certain cases) when wireless video is added to the mix. There are a handful of vendors targeting this need, and for years the mines have remained loyal to their brand. But as the number of remote-control related accidents and maintenance costs increase it forces our industry to take another look at this commonplace concept. And as the blinders are taken off, the mines are getting the revelation that not all remote control systems were created equally. This paper highlights the differences between various remote control systems, and then moves into an in-depth look at HARD-LINE?s package which drastically cuts maintenance costs, and also provides a solid investment toward full Tele-operation.

"Melt conditioned direct-chill (MC-DC) casting is a novel technology which combines vertical direct-chill (DC) casting with a high shear device directly immersed in the sump for in situ microstructural control. In this paper, the solidification mechanism of DC casting under varying conditions is discussed. The temperature profiles in the sump were measured under the steady state casting conditions by using sacrificing thermocouples. Detailed comparisons of the derived thermal condition are made. The individual role of grain refiner additions, natural thermosolutal convection and forced convection in the sump and the interplay of these factors in determining the solidification structures of DC cast billets are discussed. The MC-DC casting technology can be used to control microstructural constituents and casting defects in DC cast billets/ingots by in situ manipulating of the thermal and fluid flow conditions.INTRODUCTION Direct-chill (DC) casting of aluminium, has been the essential commercial process for producing feedstock suitable for subsequent processing, such as extrusion, rolling or forging. Fine and equiaxed grain structures in the as-cast billets/ingots are required to enable a fine and uniform distribution of second phase particles and microporosity. This leads to higher productivity, more cost-effective homogenisation and more efficient downstream thermomechanical processing. The addition of chemical inoculants has been the standard industrial operation prior to casting for grain refinement of Al alloys. However, it has been established that less than 1% of the grain refiner particles added actually act as heterogeneous nuclei to refine the grain structures, showing a very low grain refining efficiency (Greer, Bunn, Tronche, Evans, & Bristow, 2000). Moreover, the remaining particles from the grain refiner addition in the final casting may cause surface defects during downstream processing. A major issue of the metallurgical quality of large sized ingots/billets is the non-uniformity of microstructures even with chemical grain refiner additions. This is due to the fact that the grain structure formed in the different zones of the billet depends on the local chemical composition and local cooling rate. The local cooling rate can vary from 0.4~1 K/s at the centre of the billet to around 10–20 K/s at its surface zone (Nadella, Eskin, Du, & Katgerman, 2008). The large thermal gradient along radial direction between billet surface and interior of the melt during conventional DC casting induces thermal stress and cold cracking even with grain refiner addition. Therefore the control of casting defects, such as macrosegregation, porosity, cold/hot cracking and distortion of the billets/slabs, etc., is still challenging in industry, causing high scrap rate of DC cast ingots/billets even with grain refiner addition."

"As an alternative to conventional dewatering by vacuum filtration and oil-fired rotary dryers, Brunswick Mining conducted extensive pilot-scale testwork on its copper, lead, zinc and bulk concentrates using a Larox Oy (Finland) automatic pressure filter. The results showed that pressure filtration readily produced final cake moistures of 6-8.5 per cent on this very fine sulphide material.An in-depth analysis examines pressure filtration in terms of metallurgical performance and projects energy savings of 78 per cent for pressure filters over the current dewatering operation. Potential energy and operating cost reductions are also estimated.IntroductionVacuum filters followed by oil-fired rotary dryers are one of the most common means of dewatering mineral concentrates. They represent, however, a level of technology which is exceedingly wasteful in terms of manpower, space utilization equipment and fossil fuel dependence. In addition, the use of thermal dryers is leading to increased environmental concerns both in plant and out.These were the primary factors which prompted Brunswick Mining to consider alternative dewatering methods as the existing equipment came up for replacement and upgrading. In late 1979, company engineers were encouraged by automatic Larox pressure filters seen at several Scandinavian operations. Subsequent laboratory tests by the manufacturer (Larox Oy of Finland) on several concentrate samples were sufficiently promising for Brunswick and Noranda to lease a trailer mounted filter-lab unit and a technician from Larox for a five-week period. Extensive on-site testwork on all four Brunswick concentrates (zinc, lead, copper and &apos;bulk&apos; lead-zinc) confirmed the potential of pressure filtration."

DISCODAT is a system of computer programs written for CANMET, Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and resources, to be used in analyzing geological data for rock slope design. The programs were written in Fortran IV for an IBM 360/67 computer. A program conditions field data from field forms for storage in a line file. Data may be selectively retrieved from the line file by a general retrieval program which uses a variety of relational operators. The retrieved data may be displayed as structural diagrams or histograms produced on a line printer or in a number of maps produced on a drum plotter. There is a logical sequence which leads to the characterization of those elements of the subfabrics of a rock mass which may be kinematically active. Structural domains within the rock mass can also be outlined by a procedure described as areal analysis. Costs for a complete analysis are usually substantially less than $l/discontinuity.

"Perhaps .I should start this talk on Arsine poisoning, by giving a brief background and history of the Bralorne Mill.The present Bralorne company started milling operations in 1932, with amalgamation and flotation, and operated continuously until 19 61 . In 19 59, it was decided to change over to cyanidation, and to use double filtration rather than counter current. The cyanide portion of this new plant was completed and went on stream in August 1961 utilizing the grinding circuit of the old flotation plant. The new grinding circuit was completed and started operating December 15, 1961.The grinding circuit consists of a 7 1 x 101 Hardinge Rod Mill, and a 7 1 x 101 Hardinge Ball Mill. In series with the rod mill is a 16"" x 24"" Denver Duplex Jig, and two of these jigs are also in parallel with the ball mill. The rod mill product is classified by a Kreb cyclone, the oversize going to the ball mill. The ball mill is in closed circuit with this same cyclone. The jig products are amalgamated daily, and the amalgam barrel tails are returned to the ball mill for regrind. Arsenious oxide (As203) is one of the reagents used in amalgamation. Approximately 39 ozs. per day is used.The cyanide circuit consists of a 481 x 121 thickener, three 24' x 24' agitators, two 141 x 161 drum filters and a Merrill Crowe precipitation unit.The Krebcone overflow is thickened to 60 - 62% solids. Hydrated lime, along with a settling agent is added to the thickener. Some of the overflow water from the thickener is returned for use in the jigs. The balance of this overflow water goes to waste. To the thickened pulp entering No. 1 agitator, barren solution is added, along with sodium cyanide and hydrated lime. Cyanide strength is held at 0. 9 - 1. 0 lbs/ ton solution and lime at 0. 8 lbs/ ton solution. The lime content usually drops to 0. 5 lbs/ ton in No. 3 agitator. The two drum filters are in series and are washed with barren solution. The discharge of No. 3 agitator is fed to No. 1 filter and the discharge of No. 1 filter is repulped in barren solution and feeds No. 2 filter. No. 2 filter discharges to tails, The filtrate is clarified, deaerated and the gold precipitated. One hundred to two hundred tons of barren solution are bled to waste each day. The ore contains 1 % Arsenopyrite and 1. 5% Pyrite."

Recovery of vanadium from LD (Linz-Donawits) converter slag was evaluated by means of microbial leaching. Vanadium leaching was performed in two stages. In the first stage, the bacteria were grown in a culture medium and in the second stage; vanadium containing slag was added to the metabolites produced by bacteria. Bioleaching was performed using heterotrophic bacteria Pseudomonas Putída. Control tests without bacteria inoculation were also performed and the results were compared with bioleaching outcomes. Optimal conditions for the bioleaching of vanadium containing slag were determined.

"This paper is an attempt to outline the structural problems at the Cochenour Willans mine, in so far as their details have been tentatively worked out. It must be emphasized that there are considerable data that can be interpreted in more than one way, and that further work may modify or completely change some of the hypotheses presented herein. Certain features, however, are sufficiently constant to warrant reliance on them when searching for extensions of orebodies.As the individual ore shoots usually have relatively small dimensions, but are often very high grade, structural details are of more than usual significance in laying out a mining programme. An illustration of this is a small shoot recently located and mined as a result of studying a minor slip cutting off a part of high grade gold ore in No. 319 stope. The shoot, which is bounded on three sides by slips, and on the fourth by the original stoping, was roughly triangular in plan, 20 feet on the base, and 40 feet in length. The average width mined was 4.5 feet, but the gold obtained totalled over 1,800 oz.The property lies in Dome township, east of McKenzie island, and consists of an original group of thirteen claims acquired from the Cochenour Willans syndicate, plus one additional group of five claims obtained by purchase from the Kelson Red Lake Gold Mines, Limited, and one other claim that rounds out the southeast corner of the block.The claims of the original group were staked by W. M. Cochenour, Dan Willans, and Horace Young, during 1926 and 1927. The Cochenour Willans Syndicate was formed in 1928, and until incorporation of the present Company work was carried on at varying intervals by several different interests, including Ventures Limited, Hollinger Consolidated, who sank a shaft to open up the 150-foot level, and by the Syndicate itself. The first ore from the property was shipped to the Gold Eagle mill by the present Company in 1939, and amounted to 4,959 tons, from which 2,360 oz. gold was recovered. The first brick was poured in December, 1939, and production has been continuous since that date. To the end of June, 1946, gold having a value of $5,982,000 has been produced from 345,033 tons of ore treated."

"Horizontal wells in coal seams, Qinshui basin, China are prone to wellbore instability problems induced by drilling, completion and production operations due to the presence of natural cleat network, anisotropy with regard to permeability, brittleness and mechanically weak property of the coal rock. The mechanism of wellbore instability in coal seams is very different from that in conventional formations, the traditional wellbore stability study methods therefore, are not proper for wellbore stability analysis in coal.In this study, the mechanism and controlling of wellbore stability of coal seams in the Qinshui basin was investigated through theoretical modeling, laboratory experiment and field operation. Firstly, a new physical model of wellbore stability for highly-cleated coalbed was proposed, considering the combined effect of mechanical mechanism and reservoir characteristics, specifically, taking the effect of reservoir pore pressure in the vicinity of the wellbore on the wellbore stability into account. Then experiments on the triaxial stress evaluation were conducted at laboratory where rock mechanical parameters such as Poisson's ratio, Young's modulus, compressive strength, tensile strength, angle of internal friction and cohesion ability were measured respectively. The in situ stress at different depths in four wells of Zheng 1-303, Zheng 1-308, Zheng 1-309, and Zheng 1-310 in the Zhengzhuang were calculated, and the collapse pressure and formation breakdown pressure were predicted through the theoretical model we developed. Finally, by comparing the maximum collapse pressure and minimum breakdown pressure of the four wells in the coal as well as in the roof and floor of the coal seams, the fluid weight window for safe drilling in each coal seams was determined, and appropriate approaches against anti-sloughing in coal seams, Qinshui basin were applied in the field operation.The wellbore stability was found not only related to the wellbore pressure, but also affected by the pressure in the reservoir through the theoretical model. The fluid weight window for safe drilling in each coal seams varies with the coefficient of wellbore stability in the model. The laboratory experiment results indicate that the roof and floor of 3 # coal in Qinshui basin has high breaking strength, high heterogeneity, and are easy to collapse and breakdown. In addition, the whole rock mineral analysis shows that 3 # coal in the Duanshi block has high clay content, resulting in the phenomenon of hydration swelling as clay encountered water, and leading to unstable coal and extreme large drilling uncertainties. Due to the effect of the unstable rock mechanical properties of the roof and floor formation on the wellbore stabilizing, drilling parameters, drilling fluid performance and BHA were optimized during the drilling process according to the formation properties, rock mechanical properties and drilling techniques in the field operation."

"Stillwater Mining Company (SMC), a partnership of Chevron Resources and Manville Corporation, produces a copper-nickel, platinum-palladium flotation concentrate at its Nye, Montana mine. The concentrate is then toll processed in Europe. Recognizing the economic advantage of treating the concentrates at the mine site and of retaining this strategic resource in the United States, the Company commissioned Tolltreck International Limited and International Process Research Corporation to conduct pilot scale smelting tests with a flowsheet that would maximize metal recoveries while satisfying the environmental requirements of operations at Stillwater.Primary smelting was conducted in a single phase, 50 k W, submerged-arc, electric furnace. Refining the product mattes to copper-nickel ""white-metal""; containing approximately 2% iron, was accomplished in a Tolltreck, IV-litre, top blown rotary converter. Over-all platinum and palladium recoveries were approximately 99%; copper and nickel recoveries averaged 94%. It is North America&apos;s only primary producer of these precious metals. The Stillwater area was mined for chrome ore during World War U and the Korean War, but it was not until 1961 that attention was drawn to the similarities between the Stillwater Complex and the Bushveld Complex of South Africa with its deposits of platinum group metals.A concentrated search for platinum was begun by Manville Corporation in 1967. Its presence, together with palladium, in mineable quantities was confirmed in the period 1976-1978, and the first partnership to develop the deposits was formed by Manville and Chevron in 1979. Anaconda joined the group in 1983, and in 1985 its share was purchased by Lac Minerals. In 1988 the interests of Lac Minerals were purchased by Chevron and Manville.The decision to develop the mine and build a concentrator was made in 1986. Construction began in the fall of that year, and the first concentrate was produced six months later, in March 1987. Underground mining is done in a two-shift, five day- week operation. Since startup, the concentrator has operated on a 24 hour/day, 7 day/week schedule, treating an average of 635 tonnes of ore per day and producing approximately 10 tonnes of concentrate."

has been no commercial production of either perlite or pumice in British Columbia. Several promising occurrences are known to exist but their development has been delayed due to difficult access and / or remote locations. The Empire Valley perlite deposit is located 120 km east of Clinton. The deposit appears to be a flat-lying volcanic flow 50 to 70 m thick that is part of an Eocene rhyolite and dacite volcanic assemblage. The Francois Lake perlite deposit occurs on the north shore of Francois Lake where perlite is part of a rhyolitic volcanic sequence. The exposure of perlite is about 13 m thick and is considered to be Eocene or Oligocene in age. The Uncha Lake perlite deposit is located about 5 km south Industrial Minerals in Canada of Uncha Lake. Perlite appears to be intercalated with porphyritic rhyolite flows that are comparable to those at Francois Lake. Showings are widespread but poorly exposed and thicknesses are unknown. The Mount Meager pumice deposit is located in the Lillooet River valley at the base of Plinth Mountain. Coarse pumice agglomerate forms a large talus slope that is undercut by the river. Unsorted, angular fragments up to 50 cm in diameter are intermixed with up to 30 per cent of sand and silt-sized particles. The exposed zone is about 200 m long and 50 m high; it is being considered as a source of lightweight aggregate.

The adsorption of magnesium and calcium ions on sphalerite and pyrite is discussed. These ions are common in process water and often considered be detrimental in sulphide flotation. The study attempts to characterize the adsorption mechanism, which has been less studied than the oxide system. Generally for oxides metal ion uptake occurs when cations are hydrolyzed. Our findings reveal that magnesium and calcium adsorb on sulphides at pH below hydrolysis, but adsorption is not chemical. Coal bumps are a special form of release of geologic strain energy that has already been one of the most dangerous hazards to underground mining safety in China. A number of coal-bump models have been developed to quantify coal failure under assumption that a bump is a kind of non-gas induced outburst. However, some technical experts in charge of micro-seismic and gas monitoring have found unusual gas emissions before and after bump, which suggests that it is possible for gas to trigger coal bumps. Considering the coal reservoir as geological body composed of the coal matrix and gas, a new model based on Lippmann?s bump model is proposed to understand the initiation of coal bumps. The redistribution zone from excavation of a roadway has been calculated and analyzed regarding its relation with mining depth. It is shown that high gas pressure may push the coal seam to overstep the critical state due to extension of the plastic disturbed zone, and this is harmful to the stability of coal seam. This model successfully explains the bump phenomena of the Xinzhouyao mine at shallow depth.
