"VAUGHAN THOMPSON designed the Thompson retrievable diamond drill wedge and reaming assembly in 1948. Since 1950, the Hudson Bay Exploration and Development Company, Limited has used the method extensively. The wedge, setting tool, and reamer have been modified slightly since they were first introduced. In 1951, Mr. Thompson designed the Thompson arc cutter. The purpose of this tool is to decrease effectively the diameter of the arc cut, using standard drilling tools. This directional drilling device is usually employed when a branch hole is desired. The Thompson arc cutter has been used with success at Birch Lake, Saskatchewan, at the property of Cuprus Mines, Limited, Manitoba, and at Thompson Lake, Manitoba.UsesThe Thompson retrievable wedge provides a simple method for:(1) Re-drilling lost core sections(2) Re-sampling sections of old holes(3) By-passing lost tools Correcting the direction of a hole(4) Drilling a branch hole to obtain intersections at a higher elevation than the original holePrevious to the spring of 1951, the wedge was used only for the first four of these purposes. Introduction The property of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company is on the east side of Howe sound, some twenty miles north of-Vancouver. The camp is served by two settlements, one at Britannia Mines townsite, approximately three miles from the water's edge at an altitude of 2,100 feet, the other at Britannia Beach, on Howe sound. The first discovery of copper ore on the property was made in 1888, but it was not until 1905 that production started. From that year until the end of 1944, production had totalled 732,414,420 pounds of copper and 261,126 ounces of gold from six orebodies, known as the Victoria, Empress, No. 5, Fairview, Bluff, and Jane. No. 8 orebody, with which this paper is concerned, was discovered in 1937 by diamond drilling from the 4100 level, some 300 feet above sea level. Development of this orebody to the end of 1944 had included the sinking of a shaft from the 4000 to the 5250 level, and a limited amount of stoping. This work has delimited the orebody from the 3800 to the 4950 level and has indicated upwards of 1,000,000 tons of copper-zinc-gold ore. It is planned to commence production in the near future, while continuing exploration of the orebody at depth.

The environmental control program at Cassiar Mine is an active one involving government, unions and company personnel all working together to achieve a goal- "A clean and safe working environment". This can only be achieved by utilizing three of Cassiar's most important resources; i.e., people, time and money. Past environmental programs have more than proved that the goal can be reached and. with the future programs now in progress. Cassiar Asbestos will achieve its environmental goals.

A gold bearing pyrite concentrate was treated at the pilot scale for the extraction of gold. Mineralogical analysis of the concentrate identified gold to be mainly present in the form of a solid solution in pyrite. This gold distribution resulted in a poor extraction yield of 55% by direct cyanidation. A piloting campaign including an oxidative pre-treatment by roasting in a fluid bed was followed by treatment with halogens for gold extraction has led to a gold extraction yield of 96.5%. Sulphur removal during the oxidation was very efficient at >99.5% and gold extraction by the halogens was completed within a 1 hour contact time. The piloting was performed on a 300 kg sample and uses a diluted solution of hypohalites as the oxidizing agent for gold extraction. Sulphuric acid was injected in the reactor during the halogens treatment to lower pH to 2. The diluted solution of hypohalites (1-3%) was generated by electrolysis during the piloting campaign in a membrane-less electrolysis cell. The extracted gold was recovered over activated carbon in column and the gold depleted brine was treated for impurities removal and recycled for further gold extraction. With the recycling of water and brine, the regeneration of hypohalites and with a barren solid that is inert and stable, the Nichromet Extraction technology is a green process where the protection of the environment does not preclude profitability.

Direct observation of charge shape and its motion in industrial mills is not possible; therefore, a combination of analytical and physical studies is used to determine charge trajectory. Software packages, which predict charge motion consider only the outermost layer of charge (single ball) and ignore the charge and the interactions of grinding elements. In the new version of the GMT (Grinding Media Trajectory) software, the effect of liners specification and bulk load on charge shape and trajectory are considered. The charge trajectory was measured in a laboratory mill with the diameter of 100 cm and length of 21.5 cm with the transparent end and compared with that of the old version of GMT. Four types of polyurethane rings were accurately machined to scale down the liners arrangements at two industrial mills. The model mill was operated at 55, 70 and 85% of the critical speed for five levels of mill filling (10, 15, 20, 25% and 30% by volume). The experiments indicated that the end walls effect was negligible for the model mill with the length of 10.8 cm and beyond. The proposed relationships to correct the trajectory and charge shape were validated by using the new liner of the Gol-E-Gohar iron ore company AG mill. The positions of shoulder, toe, toe departure and impact points were predicted with the relative errors of 5, 0.7, 2 and 0.2%, respectively. The GMT software was updated with the new relationships. The results of GMT simulation indicated that when the lifter face angle increased from 7 to 30°, the distance between the charge impact point and the toe decreased from 40.1 to 11.2° for 30% filling. The change in the position of the impact point meant increasing the probability of charge impacting the toe, not the liner which favored more efficient comminution practice.

"The development and industrial applications of magnetic liners have been around for decades. A Swedish company Skega first introduced rubber magnetic liners, and then followed by the Chinese invention of metal magnetic liners. Traditionally, both liners were used in secondary ball mills and regrind ball mills for industrial applications, especially for ores containing magnetic materials. Mostly steel balls or equivalent forged steel balls, usually below 60 mm in diameter, were used as grinding media. With the development of mineral resources over the years, SAG mills and larger ball mills have become the dominating components for comminution circuit design. Due to the development of larger diameter ball mills and thus larger ball charge diameter (up to 80mm) especially in non-ferrous metal mining operations, the application of magnetic liners have been very limited. Based on “Magnetism theory” and the development of new materials, the HMR Group Limited has been conducting researches on examining the structures of magnetic liners, associated materials and magnetic circuits which led to the invention of the Nano Alloy Steel Magnetic Liner (NSML). Recently, NSML had a successful application in a 5.5 m diameter × 6.5 m ball mill at the Erdenet Copper Mine in Mongolia. The NSML successfully handled a ball size up of to 80 mm, while achieving a service life of nearly 24 months, which is almost 3 times wear life of the original manganese steel liners.INTRODUCTIONDuring the development and utilization of mineral resources, mineral processing is an indispensably operation. The effective separation of various useful minerals depends on sufficient monomer dissociation of minerals in the ores. The crushing and grinding operation is prior operation of mineral processing. Ball mills are used in different concentrators. As the main consumption parts of mill, liners have been studied constantly. As a new kind of liners, magnetic liners besides can meet the requirement of production, and also have characteristics with maintenance-free, saving energy and increasing efficiency. So the magnetic liners are worth to be spread and applied world widely."

The wide range of potential feed materials, process steps, and products in metallurgical facilities means that standard equipment might not be available to adequately meet the project technical and economic needs. Custom designed equipment should be considered only after rigorous research precludes purchasing standard equipment. However, the decision to use custom equipment introduces a new element of risk into the project. To manage the risk, custom equipment design should be developed through the same front end loading (FEL) phases as project development. If more than incremental development of custom equipment is required, appropriate test work or pilot trials are required to test key uncertainties. Important activities during custom equipment design include maintaining clearly defined performance objectives, conducting appropriate reviews, carefully crafting commercial and intellectual property agreements with design and fabrication partners, and assembling a multidisciplinary team with sufficient development expertise.

"Abstract - Africa is endowed with a number of the world's giant ore deposits which have contributed significantly to the development of their host countries. Mineral exploration has a long history in the continent, but mining on an unprecedented scale took off during the latter part of the 19th century, accompanied by the development of lines of communication and other infrastructure to service the major mining centres .The ""Winds of Change"" which swept Africa in the 1950s and 1960s brought in new styles of government and economic management to a number of regions, often with demise of economic viability and infrastructure. ln recent years, with the end of the cold war, collapse of communism and changes in South Africa, new opportunities for mineral exploration are opening up rapidly in Africa. However, due to the large cost, long lead-in time, and high risk of developing new mineral ventures in the continent, it is necessary for the host countries to draft realistic and favorable mineral laws and fiscal codes in order to attract, and not deter, potential mineral investors.There will be an on-going role in mineral exploration throughout Africa for the artisanal miner, the smaller entrepreneurs and mining companies, exploration aid programs funded by the developed countries through African governments, as well as the major mining houses who have the resources to develop larger viable mineral deposits."

Examples of projects include renewable energy considerations that incorporate solar, wind, and/or biomass options, and contain components designed to educate business, government entities and the local community on renewable energy options and potential opportunities Multiple property re-use options are being researched and evaluated, based on site-specific conditions and characteristics, including infrastructure, local community needs and regional economic conditions. Re-use options being explored include innovative uses and needs, such as specialty housing, unique business and industrial needs, and an extensive variety of recreational and small business opportunities that best fit the specific needs of the local community and regional economic structure.

Introduction Considerable attention has of late been attracted to the area surrounding Nimpkish lake, on northern Vancouver island, by the discovery of important rich copper deposits. In less than two years some 200 mineral claims have been staked in a small area, and at least two groups have very promising surface showings. During the summer of 1929, the writer spent one month investigating the general geology and mineral deposits of the region, and, although no detailed work has as yet been done in the field or in the laboratory, the importance of the mineral discoveries and the lack of geological information available to the public warrants a preliminary paper on the district. The district is, from a mining viewpoint, very accessible. Boats from Vancouver call at Englewood, in Beaver cove, four times a week. From Englewood, a first-class logging railway, operated by the Wood, .English Company, extends to the northeast corner of Nimpkish lake. The fifteen-mile trip from the north to the south end of the lake is made by boat, two tugs being maintained by the logging company. The whole trip from Englewood can easily be made in one day. The known mineral deposits lie immediately east of the southern part of the lake, four miles or less from the shore. A fair trail, four miles ? long, leads from the lake to the Nimpkish Copper group. Apart from this trail and an old logging railway grade which follows the east side of Klaanch river for several miles, no trails exist on the southeast side of the lake.

"The early history of the Geological Survey of Canada is closely connected with coal geology investigations in the Atlantic Provinces. In 1843, Sir William Logan, the first director of the Geological Survey, measured the 4441m thick shore section at Joggins in Nova Scotia. Detailed mapping of the coalfields were subsequently carried out by H. Fletcher during the latter part of the nineteenth and first part of the present century. During the 1920-1940 period, the stratigraphy of the carboniferous WIZS' established by WA. Bell, who later also became a diretor of the Survey. Bell's work WIZS' followed by coal geology investigations of A.A. Hayes, W.S. Dyer, EA. Goranson, G. W.H. Norman, J.E. Muller, T.B. Haites and P.A. Hacquebord.The activities and accomplishments of the Survey geologists during the past 150 years are presented in this paper.General Outline of Survey Activities in Coal Geology During the Past 150 YearsIn 1842, when the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) was established, the industrialization of the major countries of Western Europe and North America was actively persued. The energy required for this industrialization was obtained from the only fossil fuel then available, namely coal. The measure of a country's major mineral wealth at that time was the availability of mineable resources of coal. Eastern Canada, where mining had been carried out since 1720, was known to be well endowed with valuable coal deposits. In the major fields of Nova Scotia (Fig. I) several large-scale operations had been started during the middle and latter part of the nineteenth century.The significance of coal, therefore, was well understood, and exploration surveys specifically oriented toward coal were carried out by the Geological Survey from its earliest beginning. The first report of a detailed geological description of the coal measures of eastern Canada was prepared in 1843 by Sir William Logan (1845), the founder and first director of the Geological Survey of Canada. This early work was continued and complemented in 1896 by H. fletcher (1906), who during the latter part of the nineteenth century and first part of the present century systematically mapped the coal-bearing regions of Nova Scotia, which he considered all to be of approximately the same age."

"The stability of underground structures made (especially) in jointed rock mass is of the utmost important to designers, engineers and operators. Rock bolting is generally being practised to reinforce excavation walls and roofs by minimizing the movement of rock joints. This study proposes a new analytical model for the prediction of displacements, axial load and shear stress of a fully grouted rock bolt intersected by single or multiple rock joint(s). The governing equations for rock bolt are derived based on the assumption that shear force generated by slippage along the bolt-grout interface has a linear relationship with respect to the relative displacement at the interface. The proposed model is novel compared to the existing literature in the sense that it accounts for rock kinematics as an enriched sum of a continuous part (elastic) and a discontunous (jump) part due to the presence of joint planes. The complete solution of the bolt displacement, axial load and shear stress is derived as a function of the rock displacements, and, it comprises of Heaviside and/or Dirac delta functions in the solution space due to the jump at the intersection point(s) of bolt(s) and joint(s).Our novel solution is able to predict the elastic behavior of a grouted bolt, subjected to opening of the joint planes in pull-out test and also in excavated tunnel. These two cases also serve as benchmarks for grouted rock bolts with multiple joints and can be used for validation of numerical and experimental models. Further, the solution is applied to analyze the behaviour of grouted rock bolt as well as cable bolt installed in circular tunnel, with variations in rock joint(s) opening displacement, shear stiffness in the boltgrout interface and locations of the joint planes. Results indicate that for a specified grout stiffness, the maximum axial load developed in the bolt for discontinuous distribution of rock mass displacement is significantly higher than that of the continuous distribution of rock displacement. This paper provides an analytical interpretation of bolt beaviour considering multiple joint planes with variable joint opening displacements. The results obtained via the analytical method are in line with the corresponding investigation done by other authors. Thus, our analytical treatment can be used to understand bolt behaviour in realistic situations."

"As mines return to shafts to economically exploit deeper reserves, two methods mine owners use to minimize short term costs are: sinking shafts in phases and refurbishing old, existing shafts. While there may appear to be benefits to utilizing existing infrastructure, often this is not the case, resulting in missed deadlines and added costs. Similarly, if proper long term planning is not executed when sinking a shaft in phases, additional costs and downtime will be accrued. This paper will take an in depth look at both of these options with an eye towards optimizing costs, minimizing downtime, and facilitating construction. INTRODUCTION With the onset of mechanized mining and large capacity trucks, many mines turned away from shafts and began to use ramps to haul ore to surface. However, continual exploitation of mineral reserves located closer to surface, combined with the subsequent unearthing of additional resources at greater depths, forced mines to go deeper and deeper to extend the life and keep the operation running. In shallow mines, hauling ore by truck was an economical option. However, as mines get deeper, driving ramps takes additional time, and hauling over longer and longer distances becomes less economic, both in terms of cost and time. For this reason Mexico, in particular, has seen a jump in the number of shafts which have been put into production, as well as having a number of shafts in different stages of development and still more in the conceptual stages. Many of the shaft projects in Mexico are being designed in phases, with the hoist and equipment purchased capable of reaching the ultimate planned depth of the shaft, but with sinking operations stopping short at an intermediate depth. A loading pocket is then installed to start exploiting mineral at this depth sooner, with subsequent phases planned for a later date using either a rock pentice or bulkhead to separate the sinking operations from the active shaft above. Currently, we are directly involved in two such projects which are actively being deepened, as well as having seen various others already reach completion. If done properly with the long-term plan in mind, sinking in phases can be a very viable option, allowing for faster production while fully utilizing the equipment at various depths. However, there are many issues which can arise when sinking a shaft in phases that if not properly examined and planned for from the outset, have the potential to eliminate the gains hoped for when it was decided to sink in this manner."

"In this paper, an anisotropic shear behavior of rock joints is investigated under constant normal load condition (CNL). The natural rock joint roughness is transferred to artificial rock samples using room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicon rubber. Artificial cylindrical rock joint samples (90 mm diameter and 50 mm height) are made by mixture of cement, sand, and water in the ratio of 1:1.5:0.45 (by weight). Direct shear tests are conducted on these samples in twelve directions at 30º apart at four different normal stresses (250kPa, 500kPa, 1000kPa, and 1500kPa). Thus, 48 samples are tested in laboratory. Test results shows that the peak shear strength (?) of rock joints is anisotropic in nature due to change in morphological features in particular shearing direction. Joint roughness coefficient (JRC) is determined in each shearing direction by trial and error method using Barton’s model (1973). Further, cohesion ( c) and angle of friction ( ? )of joint surface in each direction is determined. Finally, a relationship between angle of friction ( ? ) and joint roughness coefficient (JRC) is developed. Experimental shear strength and Barton’s shear strength is compared and it is found that effect of anisotropic decreases with increasing normal stress. INTRODUCTIONRock mass is generally composed of discontinuity which refers collectively to joints, faults, bedding plane and folds etc. ISRM (1978) defined joint as a line of break of geological origin along which there is no visible displacement. Joint is three dimensional discontinuity which composed of two matched/mismatched surfaces. The presence of joints in rock mass plays an important role to define its overall shear strength, deformability behavior, in-situ stresses and hydro-geological properties. The shear strength of rock joints is important in the design of near surface/ deep geotechnical works (mining excavation, dam foundation, power plants, underground caverns, and slopes).In last 40 years, many constitutive models are developed to predict shear strength of rock joints under CNL conditions (Patton 1966; Landanyi and Archambault 1969; Barton 1973; Goodman 1976; Barton and Choubey 1977; Plesha 1987; Desai ad Fishman 1991; Amadei and Saeb 1992; Maksimovic 1992; Wibowo et al. 1993; Huang et al. 1993; Amadei et al. 1998; Indraratna 2000; Homand et al. 2001; Wang et. al. 2003; Samadhiya et. al. 2008; Asadollahi and Tonon 2010; Ghazvinian et al. 2012). These constitutive models have limitations to predict shear strength of rock joints in one direction. Till date, among all constitutive models, Barton (1973) model is widely used in practice due its simplicity. It includes parameters such as joint roughness and joint compressive strength (JCS) to quantify joint surfaces."

THE RESULTS of a previous investigation ( 1) on the work-softening of some heat-treated steels have led to the conclusion that the occurrence and intensity of the phenomenon is possibly governed by the work-hardening capacity of the material, and the relative amount of retained austenite. The first assumption is compatible with Polakowski's theory (2) that the absence of work-softening, in steels quenched and tempered at relatively low temperatures, may be attributed to the high rate of work-hardening which compensates for, and even out-weighs, the loss of internal energy associated with the simultaneous rearrangement of the original system of internal stresses. Although the title of this paper focuses attention to the Winnipeg coal market the following remarks should be considered applicable not only to conditions in Winnipeg but to the whole western coal industry. Technical descriptions of coal and coal-burning have been omitted. These details are already covered in other numerous publications. In discussing a market the first consideration must be the product which is required to be sold. The class, quality and price at the point of origin must be taken into account and therefore this feature will be discussed before proceeding to outline conditions in the Winnipeg local market. The writer thinks of coal as a manufactured article, not, as it is generally considered, a fuel to be dug from the ground and dumped into the consumer's bin. The work of manufacturing must be considered in detail:- 1. Consider first the coal as it is in the ground: (a) What is its fuel value? (b) Where is its market? © With what will it be in competition? 2. Consider secondly: (a) What it will cost to mine the coal. (b) What has to be done to prepare the coal for market after it is mined. This must be considered in conjunction with the answer to question 1 ©. 3. Thirdly, consider the method of business to be adopted by the producer:- (a) Is it proposed to build a market on price? Or (b) On quality?

"The rising cost of extracting metals from existing traditional deposits, increasingly stringent environmental regulations and a greater awareness of corporate social responsibility issues are all factors in stimulating the examination of mine tailings and small-scale alluvial deposits as a potential source of new raw materials. Furthermore, despite tougher economic times the demand for commodities remains strong, in no small part as a result of the growth of the world’s emerging economies.This combination of social and economic factors looks set to continue in the long term which will encourage greater recovery of materials from previously ignored sources such as mine tailings and ores from alluvial deposits.An expansion in the recovery of useful materials from mining-related activities is likely to require the use of robust and innovative techniques that have a built-in degree of future-proofing; DC plasma technology is one such technology.As a result of its ability to separate the valuable metal and minerals from the waste material while destroying hazardous compounds, Tetronics’ DC arc technology offers an alternative approach to resource recovery from a wide range of mine ores. Harmful cyanide compounds and the vast quantities of water used in conventional hydrometallurgical processing are avoided when plasma processing is adopted. DC arc technology also brings additional benefits, including: the extremely effective destruction of organic materials, the conversion of the inorganic material into a re-useable aggregate and the high tolerance of the process to fine and dusty materials. The programmable Logic Controller (PLC), at its present stage of evolution, is now considered as a mature control system. The PLC combines the solid-state reliability of hardwired logic and computer control systems with the simplicity of a relay ladder logic. Relay symbolic programming through a function-oriented keyboard provides a means which plant personnel can easily become accustomed to work with. In a large coal facility, it is shown that the control engineer can provide improved control flexibility with the advanced capabilities of the PLC.

THE Alaska Highway, in its course through British Columbia, traverses parts of two great physiographic divisions of Canada which are also distinctive geologically-the Cordillera in the western section and the Interior Plains in the eastern. The Cordilleran region in the portion of the Province with which this paper deals can be divided into four major northwest systems, known respectively from west to east as Coastal, Plateau, Cassiar-Omineca, and Rocky Mountains. The Coastal system consists solely of the Coast range except in the extreme northwest, where a part of the St. Elias range is included. The Coast range, characterized by mountains of great ruggedness,. is made up of an igneous complex of granitic rocks intruded chiefly as a great batholith. In places, spurs of these rocks extend into the Plateau heft, a partly mountainous tract largely occupied by quartzites, quartzose mica schists and their gneissic phases, and crystalline limestone with interbands and broad areas of chlorite, _hornblende, and sericite schists and bodies of intrusive granite gneiss-an assemblage of rocks known as the Yukon group. The Cassiar-Omineca system marks the divide between the Pacific and Arctic drainages. Its eastern boundary is well defined in the south by the Rocky Mountain Trench (see p. 229). The rocks of the system are, miainly, highly altered Palaeozoic sediments, but there are also Precambrian and Mesozoic rocks, the latter largely volcanic. The core of the system is granitic and there is evidence (see p. 221) to support the belief that it is of such a length as to constitute a batholith comparable to that of the Coastal system.
