Introduction In this paper we have endeavoured to present a general description of the electrical applications underground at Copper Mountain, including types of equipment used, problems encountered, and methods by which they were overcome. No attempt has been made to outline in detail the wiring of various circuits. Until recent years, the main use of electrical energy underground at Copper Mountain consisted of direct current for locomotives, trolley systems, .and signal and communication circuits. The prohibitive cost of equipment and distribution systems prevented any extensive use of a.c. beyond that commonly used for essential lighting purposes. However, in 1943 the shortage of manpower and the increased cost of labour and supplies necessitated a general mechanization programme.

These companies could find that, for the first time ever, they will have to write a cheque to the federal government on account of a new federal capital tax which became effective July I, 1989IntroductionMany mining companies which have never had to pay a federal income tax are finding that they indeed have a tax liability for 1989. Non-producing companies, such as junior exploration companies, almost automatically assume that they don't have to pay any income tax. But, a new tax imposed under the Income Tax Act catches especially the company that has no income.Effective July 1, 1989, a federal capital tax (some call it a corporation minimum tax) is payable by any corporate carrying on business in Canada where the corporation has ""taxable capital"" exceeding $10 million. As a result of the popular use of flow-through shares in recent years, many junior exploration companies are finding that their balance sheets show capital stock over $10 million, and that they are consequently caught by the new tax. Further, some of these companies are finding, to their chagrin, that the tax for 1989 was due on February 28, 1990, and that non-deductible interest is ticking away on unpaid taxes."

The Brazilian government announced in 2007 its plans to reactivate the nuclear program. As a result of this decision, a new nuclear power plant is already being built and there are studies dealing with, among other activities, the building of 4 to 8 new ones until the end of 2030. Such increase on the country?s uranium demand affects INB, the Brazilian state company that?s in charge of uranium supply. This paper describes scenarios predicted to the Brazilian nuclear industry for the next years and the INB plans to meet the country?s needs in terms of uranium exploration and production.

"Metallurgical slag (MS) such as steel slag, copper slag is a renewable resource and its compressive strength exceeds 200MPa in general. Because pure metal slug can easily be mixed into MS, complex recycle system is necessary in order to realize MS’s recycling. Meanwhile, there is high equipment failure rate in conventional crushing system. New crushing systems with inertial cone crusher could solve this problem very well. Recovery rate of MS tailings requires that crushing product can’t contain too much oversize product, so the essential equipment include two crushers and one sieve in the traditional crushing system. The new crushing system which only includes two crushers can meet the requirement and simplify the crush process. Investment of crushing equipment and infrastructure can be cut down. Operating and maintenance costs can be obviously reduced due to the simple process, which also could achieve high energy saving and excellent economic efficiency.INTRODUCTIONMetallurgical Slag (MS) such as steel slag, copper slag is a typical industrial solid waste and it threatens our environment’s safe. Metallurgical enterprises must take action to settle these wastes in order to protect our environment. Because pure metal slug can easily be mixed into MS, its uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) will exceed 200Mpa. If crushing station employs traditional crushing equipment, equipment failure will be easily caused because of these pure metal slugs. Coarse crushing equipment usually adapts jaw crusher in traditional Crushing technology and rod mill will be utilized to finish the secondary and fine crushing works. And the same time screening machinery should be used to ensure the suitable particle size (Figure 1)."

In this investigation, effect of pressure depth on the globulizations of AZ91 magnesium alloy was studied. Cylindrical samples of AZ91 alloy with 1 cm and 2cm in height and 2.5cm in diameter (H/D = 0.4 and 0.8) were prepared, then the samples were hot pressed at 10 and 30% strain at a constant temperature of 200°C; subsequently reheated at 555°C in different times. Results obtained from optical microscopy (OM) showed that the thickness of the samples and consequently, depth of strain affected regions have remarkable effect on the degree of globulization. In addition, it was found that at a constant strain and holding time, structure of thinner samples is more globular than thicker ones.

"Zonation patterns are welt developed in the mafic metavolcanic rocks that host epigenetic quartz-carbonate-gold vein mineralization at the Hollinger-McIntyre deposit. Carbonate alteration assemblages are strongly zoned about mineralization. Proceeding inward from background greenschist facies rocks to alteration envelopes enclosing individual veins, the following assemblages are observed:Assemblage I-quartz-albite-chlorite-epidote-actinolite-(calcite)Assemblage II-quartz-albite-chlorite-calcite-epidoteAssemblage III-quartz-ankerite-sericite-(chlorite-calcite)Assemblage IV-quartz-albite-ankerite-sericiteLithogeochemical zoning is equally well developed as variations in whole-rock abundances ofAs, Au, Ba, Rb, and Sb. As and Ba form the most useful zonation patterns, outlining individual ore zones as well as broader trends of mineralization.Gas chromatographic analyses of fluid inclusions in the quartz-carbonate veins indicate that the mineralizing fluid was an H20-C02 mixture. Locally, CH4-rich fluid inclusions are associated with graphitic and/or carbonaceous wallrocks. Fluid inclusions in ore-bearing veins have higher CO2 contents than those in non-ore veins. Extensive sampling and analyses of veins from the area surrounding the deposit reveals a well developed zonation of CO2 contents about the main zone of mineralization. Low CO2 levels (1-2 mole%) in veins are peripheral to the deposit and increase to over 12 mole% in mineralized zones.The observed zoning of the carbonate alteration assemblages is a result of the addition of CO2 to the wallrock, which is consistent with the zoning of CO2 in the fluid inclusions.The zoning patterns delineated in this study are useful in exploration both on a deposit scale and on the scale of individual ore zones."

"IntroductionSULPHUR production in Canada from all sources for the year 1953 amounted to about 375,000 tons. Except for 16,000 tons of elemental sulphur derived from natural gas, this production was in the form of by-product pyrites, liquid sulphur dioxide, and sulphuric acid. In the same year, Canadian industry imported 359,000 tons of elemental sulphur from the United States. The cost, including transportation charges, to Canadian consuming plants ranged from $35.00 to $45.00 per long ton, depending upon location.Although most of the sulphur consumed is used in the oxidized form it is often most convenient to buy sulphur in the elemental form, and convert it to sulphur dioxide or sulphuric acid in situ as required. This is because elemental sulphur is easily shipped and stored, weighs only half as much as an equivalent quantity of sulphur dioxide and one-third as much as the corresponding quantity of sulphuric acid, and is readily converted to these forms in a sulphur burner. A process, therefore, which could economically recover elemental sulphur from sulphide ores would be most attractive.Since the turn of the century, notable improvements have been made in extractive metallurgy, but until recently only limited attention has been paid to the possibilities of elemental sulphur recovery. This has been due to the plentiful supplies of cheaply mined Frasch sulphur which have been available on the world markets."

"Suggestions have been made that the appraisal of mining assets using discounted cash flow techniques should be based solely on proven and probable reserves in reliance upon the widespread international recognition of uniform resource definitions. Following a review of general accepted valuation principles, a survey of the literature and, most importantly, a review of real transactions in the open market, it is clear that valuators should not be constrained by the growing acceptance of modern mineral resource codes. On the contrary, valuation practitioners should be encouraged to examine all classes of mineralization and, after making due allowance for risk, to utilize all mineral resources as a basis for determining fair market value.INTRODUCTIONGreat strides have been made recently in achieving an international consensus on mineral reserve and resource definitions and classifications. The Australasian JORC code, the CIM code in Canada, the SME proposal in the United States and even a proposed code from the United Nations have all brought the objective within reach.Unfortunately, this success has led to another problem for mineral valuators. Certain securities regulators, tax collectors and their ilk have begun to expound on the opinion that discounted cash flow projections carried out to calculate net present values that would form the basis for a valuation determination should be based solely on proven and probable reserves. At 14%, the representation of women working in the mining industry is the lowest among primary industry categories in Canada1. With reference to mining operations and senior leadership, the gap in the industry is even more pronounced. In an effort to narrow the gender gap, recent industry, education, and policy efforts have been made to increase the number of women entering the industry through career awareness and early career recruitment strategies. These strategies implied that by increasing the numbers of women entering the industry there would be a natural progression of women into the hierarchies of organizations. Efforts to retain women in the industry have focused around removing career barriers such as reviewing flexible work practices and programs directed at work life balance. At this time, these efforts have resulted in negligible fluctuations to the gender gap within the industry. This research investigates the under-representation of Highly Qualified Women (HQW), and the interaction of workplace culture on their career advancement and retention within the industry. HQW (women with a bachelor?s degree or higher) are the focus of the work as they represent an essential source of leadership and technical capacity for mining organizations. This paper is based on the results of a survey of 170 HQW working in the Canadian mining sector. The findings from this research suggest that HQWs careers in mining are stalled, despite a strong indication by respondents of interest in their professional career advancement. With regards to workplace culture, respondents indicated that blatant forms of gender discrimination have been reduced in mining workplaces; however, exclusion from informal networks, implicit bias and subtler forms of workplace discrimination persist. Utilizing a framework to assess the workplace culture for women in attracting and retaining their employment, respondents provided detailed information on the aspects of workplace culture that are most problematic in relation to women?s career development in mining. Women consistently identified problematic workplace culture as a significant barrier to the career advancement and retention of women within the industry. The representation of women within the labour force will likely remain stagnant until the industry addresses workplace culture within the industry, and makes strategic efforts to develop inclusive cultures throughout mining and supportive organizations.

Areas of recent exploration interest are also discussed.THE PREVIOUS SPEAKER has capably described the truly phenomenal growth in demand for energy from all sources. The basic factors -population growth and industrial development -which will create energy demand are so fundamental to national economies that the ascending energy demand curve will be little affected by short-term factors.Because of the economic and practical advantages of nuclear power and the degree of present acceptance by electric utilities, there is no doubt that uranium will be a principal source of primary energy in industrial countries -and this will happen within a decade. Indeed, during this period it will be the fastest growing source of energy, capturing, for example, more than half of the electric utilities' expansion in the United States by 1980. The ready availability of energy sources from domestic and foreign resources is so essential to industrial nations that the long-range outlook for their adequacy is of prime importance. There has been international concern about the availability of uranium resources at reasonable cost to adequately support and foster the development of the nuclear power industry. Canada, fortunate in having established reserves and a potential in excess of any forseeable domestic demand, can confidently look forward to being a principal supplier to the industry."

A corrosion survey was performed on ten selected H-piles which support a reinforced concrete wharf located at Trepassey, Newfoundland. Approximately 900 thickness measurements were taken at twelve different locations in each off our zones on the steel piles: the splash (atmospheric) zone, the intertidal zone, the low tide zone and the submerged zone. Results show that over the 2o-year life of the wharf, corrosion has been most severe in the splash, low tide and submerged zones with average corrosion rates for the flanges of 6.95, 9.45 and 6.86 mils per year (mpy}, respectively, and average corrosion rates for the webs of 5.13, 4.12 and 3.45 mpy, respectively. Minimal attack was found in the intertidal zone where the average corrosion rate was only 1.66 mpy on the flanges and 1.37 mpy on the webs. Such a pattern of attack is frequently observed f or steel piles partly submerged in seawater. The abnormally low corrosion rate associated with the intertidal zone is generally explained as being due to cathodic protection induced by the high corrosion rate in the adjacent low tide zone. Analysis of the corrosion data obtained for the Trepassey wharf would suggest that this explanation might be incorrect. An alternate hypothesis has been brought forward which better accounts for the extremely low corrosion rate observed in the intertidal zones of these piles.

"In 2012 diesel engine exhaust (DEE) was classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and is one of the most common workplace carcinogens internationally. We estimate that approximately 2.4% of lung cancers (n=560) and a suspected 2.7% of bladder cancers (n=200) are attributable to occupational exposure to DEE annually in Canada. High levels of exposure to DEE in mining results in a disproportionate number of cancers in this sector (approximately 220 lung and 20 suspected bladder cancers annually). These could be prevented by reducing the number of workers exposed and level of exposure. KEYWORDS Bladder cancer, Diesel engine exhaust, Economic burden, Lung cancer, Mining, Occupational cancer, Prevention, Regulation INTRODUCTION Diesel engine exhaust is a complex mixture of gases and particulates containing known and suspected carcinogens such as benzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and metals. Approximately 900,000 Canadians are exposed to diesel engine exhaust at work, making it the most prevalent occupational lung carcinogen in Canada (CAREX Canada). Diesel engine exhaust is recognized as one of the most common workplace carcinogens in the world, but its classification as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) was relatively recent. In 2012, after decades of mounting evidence, diesel engine exhaust was upgraded from a probable (IARC Group 2A) to a definite human carcinogen (IARC Group 1) (IARC, 2014). The IARC evaluation was based on strong evidence in humans for an increased risk of lung cancer, as well as strong evidence in animal studies. The key human evidence considered by IARC was from epidemiologic studies of workers in truck transportation, rail transportation, and mining industries, where the use of diesel engines is widespread. These studies provided strong sufficient evidence for an increased risk of lung cancer, as well as limited evidence for bladder cancer. The human studies used particulate matter, generally measured as elemental carbon (EC) or total carbon, as a surrogate for diesel engine exhaust to assess the risk associated with level of exposure. The animal studies reviewed by IARC showed sufficient evidence for cancer with exposure to whole diesel exhaust and the particulate matter fraction of diesel exhaust, but not for the gas phase components."

This paper generalizes open stopes into elliptical cross sections and applies the results of calculations based on the mathematical theory of elasticity to indicate stress distribution on the boundaries of such stopes. These show both compressive and tensile stresses and provide an ex-planation for the development of excessive dilution in shrinkage toping. Introduction T HE stress pattern around shrinkage stopes is identical with that around other stopes under the same physical conditions. However, a shrinkage stope ends as an unsupported open stope, and the method i limited to the stress range within which the rock is generally self-supporting. If it is acceptable to generalize the outline of a shrinkage stope into an elliptical cross section, then the graphs of Geldart & Udd (1) (see also Panek (2) and Denkhaus (3)) provide a good base for approximating the stress distribution as mining progresses. This paper will discuss several of the systems and processes that have been developed over the past few years, and are now being utilized by major mining companies on draglines in North America, Australia and South Africa. These technologies include production monitors and reporting systems, GPS navigation systems, structural integrity monitoring systems, structural analysis studies to increase the dragline RSLs, and inspection and response strategies. The use of these technologies provides significant increases in dragline production, and reduces maintenance costs and downtime. The question that needs to be asked is what value is there in monitoring? Increasing dragline productivity is dependent upon to two items with the overall goal being to maximize the number of bank cubic meters moved and to uncover more coal: 1) maximizing payload and 2) maximizing the number of cycles. If you do not measure and try to optimize the parameters that impact payload and number of cycles, there is very little chance that you can improve overall dragline productivity. These parameters are: Maximizing payload is dependent upon the following: ? Geology ? Blasting ? Monitor weighing accuracy ? Engage location ? Disengage Location ? Rigging ? Suspended load ? Bucket characteristics ? Operator skills ? Minimizing rehandle Maximizing the number of cycles depends upon maximizing digging time, and minimizing cycle and delay/down times by: ? "There is a growing demand for ore characterization methods to support metallurgical development programs from a true geometallurgical perspective. Today, there are multiple automated mineral analysis systems on the market, many of which are based on conventional mineral liberation data. However, liberation data can be limited when assessing the floatability of a mineral to predict its recovery as it doesn’t consider the surface area available for collector absorption and bubble attachment; whereas mineral exposure measurements can. Using the First-Order Rate equation to predict the recovery versus time of variously exposed particles, a model has been developed to predict the recovery of copper sulphides at a particular grind size. This model provides the opportunity for the prediction of copper recovery and grade from multiple, small-scale samples. These predicted values can be imported into resource modeling software, and guide the domaining of geometallurgical units within the ore body. Data has been analyzed from various global copper porphyry systems and compared with actual flotation testwork.IntroductionAs part of the development of a mining project, resource estimation primarily focuses on the definition of the quantity and grade of the ore in the deposit; as the project evolves from preliminary economic assessment through to feasibility, the geological model is usually further populated with hardness and recovery data.The CIM Definition Standards (2011) identifies measured mineral resource as the part of a mineral resource for which quantity, grade or quality, densities, shape, and physical characteristics are estimated with confidence sufficient to allow the application of “modifying factors” to support detailed mine planning and final evaluation of the economic viability of the deposit as an asset. The modifying factors include, but are not restricted to, mining, processing, metallurgical, infrastructure, economic, marketing, legal, environmental, social and governmental factors.With market fluctuations, many investors in the mining industry have become more and more risk averse which has increased the demand for more reliable data to support these modifying factors. This has led to the widespread use of geometallurgy and statistical analysis to better inform the resource estimation. Geometallurgy is used to characterize ore variability and is especially useful for highly variable or strongly zoned deposits, several close deposits that will be milled together, projects requiring complex or new metallurgical approaches, brownfields or sight-of-mine exploration, expansion projects that exploit new, deeper or adjacent reserves, and projects with significant legacy drill core that are being re-evaluated due to new economic circumstances."

The electrokinetic (EK) technology for dewatering of two tailings from the uranium mines in Northern Saskatchewan is studied in bench scale experiments. The study includes four phases: 1. Characterization of two uranium mine tailings; 2. Assessment of voltage loss on the coated Ti anode and water interface. 3. EK cell test series to measure electrokinetic permeability (ke) of two tailings; 4. EK dewatering test series to study electrokinetic enhanced gravity dewatering on two tailings samples. The results have demonstrated that both tailings responded positively to the EK process. For the tailings containing gypsum, the EK dewatering should be a short term process (within one hour) with anode conditioning (pH adjustment). The tailings containing clay minerals responded well to EK dewatering, in which pH adjustment is optional and will further enhance the EK flow. Both tailings as tested have low hydraulic conductivity and are particularly suitable for EK dewatering and consolidation.

Certain non-metallic minerals are used widely as fillers in the manufacture of many Canadian products. The first part of this paper deals in a general way with deposits of such minerals and their mining, with the concentration and preparation of the minerals for market, with specifications of the consumers, and with methods of control of the products to meet the specifications. The second part of the paper de-scribes talc as a specific example of mineral filler. Its production and uses in Canada and the possibility of producing higher grades of talc are discussed. Some suggestions are made for meeting the needs for mineral fillers as Canada's industry expands. RELATIVELY few people are sufficiently aware of the vast and important role that is being played in our everyday lives by mineral fillers. "THE mineral industry is constantly undergoing changes and facing challenges, and today we are in the midst of another serious one -namely, manpower requirement at every level in the mines, shops and plants. In the not too distant past we had a situation where labour was plentiful, although the equipment, by present-day standards, was quite inadequate, and that's easily understandable when you look back at the primitive methods by which our Western mines were first developed and operated, and then improved by the inventiveness and ingenuity of man.I'd like to show you a few slides from drawings made by Buck O'-Donnell which illustrate some of yesterday's methods of mining. Some of you probably had first-hand experience with some of these so you know they were tedious, time-consuming and involved a lot of heavy labour.Taking the Anaconda Company operations at Butte as an example, we can see what has happened in just the past ten years. In August of 1956, the Butte mines had 5,516 day's-pay employees and 976 salaried employees, for a total payroll of 6,492. In August of this year, there were 3,645 day's-pay employees and 605 on the salaried roll, for a total of 4,250. The number of contract miners had gone from 1,347 in 1956 to 606 in 1966 and that of other underground miners from 2,893 ten years ago to 1,149 this year. Along with these changes, however, another change of special significance has taken place, and that is in the number of skilled craftsmen, surface engineers and so on required for our operations. In 1966, we had 1,890 of these people, 600 more than in 1956 and nearly three times as many as just twenty years ago."

For the benefit of those who are not familiar with the history of the western Provinces-Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta-as regards our natural resources, a few words of explanation may be in order before taking up the consideration of the Mines Act of 1930. In 1867, The British North America Act was passed by the Imperial Parliament. That Act, which is our constitution, created a union between the provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Upper and Lower Canada (now known as Ontario and Quebec respectively) under the name of the Dominion of Canada. Provision was made therein for embracing other parts of Canada from time to time. That portion of Canada which today comprises the Provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta and the lands to the north of them, was then known as Ruperts Land and the North West Territory. In the year 1670, King Charles II had granted by Letters Patent to Prince Rupert and his associates, known as ?The Governor & Company of Gentlemen Adventurers of England, Trading into Hudson's Bay?, commonly known as the Hudson's Bay Company, the lands and territories therein described, being roughly all the lands adjacent to and west of Hudson's bay; also the gold and silver to be found or discovered therein and other rights as more fully described in said Letters Patent. The land so granted was called 'Ruperts Land'.

The path from process conception to commercial implementation poses significant technical, economic, and sometimes political challenges for every project team. Solving the technical challenges typically distinguishes successful projects from those that fail. Here, the authors provide an outline for technical success based on lessons learned from years of experience in process design and R&D. Challenges faced by new technology developers, with regard to design and definition, are described. Experience-based methods to avoid missteps are shared. Special emphasis is placed on the selection of viable unit operations, definition of known and unknown parameters, experimental screening of options, and piloting for scalable design information. Use of computational models to define, assist, and interpret the pilot operations and results are described. Furthermore, the value of active collaboration amongst the design, research, and owner team is demonstrated.
