Casthouses throughout the aluminium industry commonly use chlorine gas as a fluxing agent for furnace and in-line treatment of molten aluminium alloys. Its positive impact on the removal of alkali elements and non-metallic inclusions is well known. Nevertheless, the elimination of its use is highly desirable due to the safety and environmental risks associated with storage and handling. Over the past decade, the aluminium industry has significantly reduced its chlorine consumption. This has been achieved by maximizing the chlorine gas utilization efficiency during metal processing, and by the chlorine replacement for crucible and furnace metal treatment applications. Operation of sealed in-line treatment units without chlorine is now possible, but with lower or inconsistent removal efficiency penalties for alkali and inclusions respectively. This paper reviews the progress made at Arvida Research and Development Centre regarding the reduction of chlorine and the development of an alternative to chlorine for in-line metal treatment without penalizing the metallurgical performance.

"A new backfill plant was constructed in 1966 adjacent to the mill of Giant Yellowknife Mines. The reasons for the addition were to increase the storage capacity for sand fill, provide facilities for mixing cement with the fill for mine stope floors and provide a system for pumping fill to B -3 raise, a horizontal distance of 4700 feet from the mill. At the same time it was hoped to increase the density of the fill pumped underground.The plant consists of two only steel storage tanks of approximately 400 tons capacity of sand fill each. They are 17 feet in diameter and have conical bottoms. The cylindrical section is 28 feet high and the conical section 14 feet high. Each tank is fitted with water nozzles around the conical sections to remove solids at the required density. The water pressure on the nozzles is 150 lbs per square inch. The cyclones used to produce the sand back fill are located on top of the storage tanks. Five model Dl0B Kreb cyclones are used for this purpose. The vortex finders are 2 1/ 4 inch and the apex 1 1/4 inch. The cement silo or storage tank is located in the same building. It is a steel tank 17 feet diameter by 41 feet high with a conical bottom. The silo holds 250 tons of bulk cement, which is unloaded by air from a bulk highway carrier using 12 to 15 lbs air pressure. The cement is conveyed to the top of the silo, a distance of 70 feet from the ground by 450 lbs. of air.The mixing tank is a rubber lined steel tank 14 feet in diameter by 14 feet high. It is equipped with a Lightning Mixer supplied by Greey Mixing Equipment Ltd. The mechanism is driven by a 40 HP motor. The lower shaft is unsupported and is equipped with two 36 inch diameter axial flow turbine type rubber covered impellers. The backfill is discharged from the storage tank into the mixing tank by a 5"" x 4"" SRL-C pump powered by a 20 HP motor. A level control in the mixing tank regulates the rate of discharge of this pump through a Grinnell-Saunders automatic control valve. The cement silo is situated at such a height above the mixing tank to allow for a Rota-Lock, a small hopper and a cement feeder. The feeder is an Omega gravimetric belt type dry feeder with a Sensogram controller. The capacity of the cement feeder is 20 tons of cement per hour. The cement and backfill are mixed in the mixing tank at whatever ratio is required for the mine stope floors."

This paper explores the connection between the stresses observed and the failure mechanisms present in the modelled cemented paste backfill. In order to look at this connection, the authors have used a previously developed model to conduct a sensitivity analysis of the model?s strength and permeability input parameters. The results from the sensitivity analysis were then compared to determine what causes modelled stresses and failure mechanisms to vary. Increased insight into the behaviour of the modelled paste will help clarify how paste behaves in the field.

The 14MW SAG mill at Tarkwa, Ghana, experienced a frozen drop charge incident on 10 February 2010. This caused downtime of 112 hours, a repair cost of $200k and production loss of 162,000 tons, corresponding to a loss of $8.9M. A new locked charge protection system was installed on the two Tarkwa mills on 30 July 2010, mitigating this risk. This system calculates the ore angle in real time while the mill is starting up and trips the mill if the ore angle exceeds a trip angle setting. The calculation of the ore angle is derived from the mill motor rotor currents only - no mechanical transducers are required. The head of Gold Fields West Africa, Peter Turner, says of the new system: "This is excellent work and the type of technology that has had and will continue to have, major opportunity cost impacts on our business."

A trend in mining exploration is to increase the number of geophysical parameters collected and interpreted for geological features in a given area. Airborne technology now allows us to simultaneously combine electromagnetic, gravity, aeromagnetic and radiometric surveys. We report the results of a multiparameter survey conducted in the area of Kamiskotia, Ontario. This area is located near and on the West side of the multi-metalliferous Kidd Creek deposit. Various metallic occurrences are reported in the studied area. Integrating multiple parameters in the interpretation produces a more detailed pseudogeological map than what has already been published. 3D interpretation has been undertaken using some of these parameters and suggests that future work is required in 3D earth model solutions in order to fully use all parameters.

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to describe the results of a preliminary investigation of a method thought to be useful in interpreting geological structures in un-metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. The writer is not aware of the method having been described or investigated previously, although no thorough search of the literature has been made.The method to •be described is based on the assumption that, in argillaceous sedimentary rocks, certain ceramic properties are diagnostic for certain beds within areas of variable limits.Two ceramic properties• have been investigated: pyrometric cone equivalent (P.C.E.), and bloating characteristics of shales. The enquiry has been directed toward testing the usefulness of these properties in determining the following:A -The correlation of shale beds and, by inference, of coal seams, sandstone beds, or other such structures associated with them.B.-The location of contacts between marine and non-marine shales where lithological, palaeontological, or other evidence is lacking.Limitations of time and facilities have prevented a thorough investigation of this problem. The results given in the present paper are preliminary only. It is hoped, however, that they will occasion discussion or even lead to more thorough investigation of the method by individuals or organizations.There are, admittedly, various limitations to the proposed method. It is thought to show some promise when used in conjunction with the well-known and established methods used in stratigraphic correlation and, more particularly, when the conventional methods are not applicable."

1. Scientific prospecting has had a profound and some-what unexpected effect on the world's supply of raw materials over the past twenty years. Where shortages were recently anticipated, abundance now prevails. It seems probable that, for the foreseeable future, adequate metallic resources will be found at costs well within the world's economic means. 2. The amount of research devoted to scientific prospecting has been extremely small in relation to the possible importance of the problem and to what could be done. It has been dominated by the thought of a dozen brilliant men, and true research expenditures have not amounted to more than a few million dollars. 3. An undue proportion of the expenditures have been for so-called geological research -mostly of a petrologial character. The results have essentially been of historic interest only. However, there has been some in-crease in genetic understanding, and this is of great importance for future resources. 4. Basic advances in mineral exploration have been made in detection techniques, generally called geophysics and geochemistry.

"A mechanistic model of axial charge segregation in rotating drums is presented. We show that granular material composed of different frictional properties diffuse into axial bands as a consequence of concentration fluctuations in the free surface layer that is caused by friction-limited mobility. A Bagnoldian stress assumption ensures an asymmetric free surface profile thereby providing the essential ingredients for the evolution of axial bands and the subsequent band coarsening observed in the literature. The formulation is sensitive to the boundary conditions of tumbling mills, including particle size and density, mill speed, inter-particle bulk friction, end wall friction and drum geometry (length and diameter).INTRODUCTIONA mechanism to fully describe the axial segregation of charge in a rotating drum remains elusive to the mineral processing industry. With regard to low aspect ratio mills (like ball mills), current thinking favours the use of closed circuit mills with correspondingly low residence times to offset the completely random contact probabilities between particles and balls (Wills & Napier-Munn, 2006). Conical end caps are argued to exploit the centrifugal force to achieve a regular gradation of ball size along the mill with larger sizes at the feed end and smaller ones closer to the discharge. However; segregation along the length has been observed in the absence of conical end caps (Oyama, 1939; Levine, 1999): In these investigations, sufficient differences in the particle’s mechanical properties (particle size, density, shape, surface roughness) was enough to successfully achieve axial segregation. Figure 1 shows the segregation of a bimodal distribution (by size) into bands of larger (darker colour) and smaller (lighter colour) particles."

"In the present study effect of grinding media on flotation of two mineral systems have been investigated, viz. sulphide minerals (including a pure chalcopyrite and pyrite mineral, and two different base metal sulphide ores), and oxide minerals (quartz, hematite and cassiterite). It was shown that mild steel media milling produced lower recoveries in the case of chalcopyrite and pyrite, as compared to the case of milling using ceramic media. For oxide minerals, the effects of using mild steel media as opposed to ceramic media were not as significant as was for the sulphides, although, after mild steel milling, at acidic pHs their recoveries were significantly reduced. For two base metal sulphide ores, viz. Nkomati and Dexing ores, the differences resulting from different milling media , although marginal, were opposite for each of these ores.For oxide minerals XPS showed that oxides and hydroxides of iron (e.g. FeOOH) adsorbed on the surfaces of the minerals. In the case of the Nkomati ore, adding Fe2+ or F3+ ions after milling with chrome steel media resulted in reduced talc (gangue) recovery, but increased water recovery and reduced concentrate grades. Further investigations are currently in progress to examine the Fe ions effect on the talc surfaces and froth properties.INTRODUCTIONGrinding of ores is necessary to liberate the valuable minerals from its gangues to allow for their selective recovery during mineral processing such as flotation. The grinding process inevitably involves contact of the ores with the surface of the grinding device and the grinding media. Accompanied by grinding, several phenomena can occur including the grinding medium wear, formation of precipitated species on the ore surfaces, chemical reaction, galvanic effects, changes in the Eh of solution, etc. There is a considerable body of literature on the differences observed in the flotation of various ores after milling using various grinding media. Laboratory studies have used balls or rods made from mild steel, ceramic, stainless steel or chrome steel to investigate the effects of different grinding media on mineral flotation. It is found that the interactions between the ore and the grinding environment can affect flotation separation of sulphide (Wei and Sandenbergh, 2007; Bruckard, 2011), oxide (He et al., 2014) and carbonate minerals (Song, 2009 and 2010). For example, mild steel milling produces relatively high concentrations of Fe ions in the pulp, affecting the recoveries of minerals compared to the case of ceramic media. On the other hand, the stainless steel media or chrome media are reported to be beneficial to the recovery of sulphides, when compared to the cases of using mild or carbon steel media (Rey and Formanek, 1960; Peng et al., 2003a,b; Huang and Grano, 2006; Bruckard, 2011). It is not clear, however, whether these Fe ions may affect the surface properties of the minerals involved or the general pulp/froth behaviour and hence their floatability. In addition, in the study of an low-S PGE ore carried out by Miettunen et al. (2012), forged media grinding in the CO2 atmosphere led to the highest Pt and Pd grades and recoveries, but the high chrome grinding media gave lower flotation recoveries than those using the forged media."

"There is currently very little information on the physico-chemical properties of rare earth elementbearing minerals, or on their processing. With the increasing demand for rare earths, this is something that needs to be addressed. This paper introduces some surface chemistry analysis of fergusonite (YNbO4), and the bubble-particle attachment. Zeta potential measurements indicate adsorption of sodium oleate and, to a lesser degree, potassium amyl xanthate onto the surface, and an increase in attachment to an air bubble is observed at pH 4.5 and 6.5. At a pH of 10.5, no attachment is observed, whether in the presence of the reagents or not. This analysis, although initial, will be used to initiate flotation tests, in order to facilitate the selective recovery of fergusonite. INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REE) are increasingly in demand, due to their prevalence in both renewable energy devices and high-end electronics. An article in the New Scientist highlighted the importance of a number of REE, many of which most people are be unlikely to have heard mentioned (Crow, 2011). From batteries (lanthanum and cerium) to magnets (dysprosium and neodymium) and lighting (yttrium), the REE are crucial to the advancement of technology and energy saving devices. For example, neodymium is finding most use in the high end magnets that keep the motors turning that power wind turbines and electric cars. In the case of yttrium, the demand outstripped the supply in 2010, emphasising the need to develop deposits containing this and other REE (Crow, 2011). The impact of our dependency on REE has become even more apparent with the reduction in exports by China, which currently controls 97 % of the world’s rare earth production (Pitts, 2011).With the increasing demand for rare earth elements (REE), there is a drive to exploit the known resources around the world. However, the physical beneficiation of the rare earth element bearing minerals is a subject which will require a great deal of investigation to fill the knowledge gaps surrounding these developing rare earth projects. There are numerous articles on REE mineralogy as well as the hydrometallurgical processing of REE concentrates (Alex, Suri, & Gupta, 1998; Peter Gromet & Silver, 1983; Ring et al., 1993; Schnetzler & Philpotts, 1970; Uda, 2000), however a common feature amongst these resources is the lack of detailed descriptions of the physical beneficiation processes required to concentrate REE-bearing minerals. There is work being conducted into reagents and methods for use in recovering some rare earths from their associated ores (Bulatovic, 2010; Ni, Parrent, Cao, & Liu, 2011), but much more in-depth research is required."

The Norddeutsche Affinerie operates an Outokumpu-Flash-Furnace as a smelting unit. The pyrometallurgical slag cleaning process is based on the slag reduction and settling in the electric furnace. Since 1972 when the slag cleaning furnace was built the throughput could be increased fourfold. However, an extensive optimisation effort is required in order to keep the copper loss low. A parameter study with a neuronal network model based on real process data was conducted to identify parameters impacting on the copper loss in the slag. It could be demonstrated that the main parameters responsible for copper loss in the final slag are fixed parameters of the flash furnace. For a better understanding of the copper loss in the electric furnace microscopic analyses of the slag structure and viscosity measurements were performed. Based on these results the reduction and settling of the copper containing droplets could be increased in both pilot plant studies and industrial scale. 4

"An Independent Electricity System Operator Industrial Accelerator Program (IESO IAP) case study was completed for a mine in Ontario, Canada by SRK Consulting, Inc. The purpose of the study was to analyze the ventilation system to determine whether and which system improvements could reduce the overall electrical power demand of the mine. Financial incentives are offered by the IESO IAP grant program to help cover the capital costs of these improvements. This study included the completion of a full mine ventilation survey as well as measurement of a full suite of electrical parameters of the surface and underground ventilation fans. After these measurements, a base ventilation model was created and established as the system baseline. Changes to the ventilation system were modeled, and their effects on the power demand were projected. The results of the study showed that several improvements were possible which may significantly improve the efficiency of the ventilation system and reduce mine electricity demand.INTRODUCTIONIn 2017, a ventilation study was conducted in accordance with the Independent Electricity System Operator Industrial Accelerator Program (IESO IAP) at a mine in Ontario, Canada. The IESO IAP is designed to assist eligible transmission-connected Canadian companies operating in Ontario to fast track capital investment in major energy conservation projects. The program will provide financial incentives to encourage investment in innovative process changes and equipment retrofits to reduce electricity consumption on the provincial system and to help companies become more competitive by positively impacting their bottom line. There are now four initiatives under the Industrial Accelerator Program:1. Retrofit2. Process & Systems, including Small Capital Projects3. High Performance New Construction4. Energy Managers – a new initiative under the Industrial Accelerator ProgramWithin the program, companies may propose energy saving changes to their current systems where applicable and appropriate. Companies may then be awarded funding to implement the proposed changes. The program allows partial financial compensation to implement certain energy saving changes that would otherwise not be considered due to high capital costs. For larger projects, such as underground mine ventilation systems, a detailed engineering study must be submitted. This study must detail each energy saving change or measure, its savings, and calculate the financial incentives using the IESO IAP Payment Structure. The importance and necessity of gas hydrates deposits development followed by natural gas extraction is considered in the present paper. Analysis is given to world sources focused on methane hydrates formation conditions. Information covering the most perspective gas hydrate deposit of the Black Sea is presented in the article. Two most common methods of gas hydrates development ? thermo stimulation and inhibitor injection are analyzed presenting their comparative characteristics. Basic scientific trends and developments of underground mining department in the field of gas methane extraction from gas hydrates are scrutinized. Schemes and methods of natural gas hydrates development are shown together with formulas, parameters and factors influencing the extraction process. Also the analysis is given to the possibility of gas hydrates formation from methane-air mixtures of degassing wells from coal mines of Ukraine. Improved experimental unit for gas hydrates formation under laboratorial conditions is presented with its basic characteristics. General conclusions and basic tasks requiring further research are given in the end.

This paper discusses three case studies conducted at Highland Valley Copper mine (HVC) that illustrate operational improvements and insights which resulted from using the McGill University gas dispersion sensors. In the first study, the superficial gas velocity (Jg) sensor was used to implement a gas profiling control strategy for the rougher, scavenger and first cleaner cells in the Cu/Mo separation circuit. The data showed a 40% reduction of down-the-bank Cu recovery at constant Mo recovery which resulted from operating the cells at the target profiles. In the second study, the bubble size analyzer was used to better understand two mechanisms of bubble formation in the two flotation columns that make up the final Mo cleaning stage: the conventional rubber-sleeve sparger and the Microcel(TM) system. The data showed a considerable reduction of bubble size in the Microcel column which resulted in a significant increase in concentrate quality (1-2% Mo absolute) and a dramatic (4-5 fold) increase in concentrate production rate compared to the typical operation. The estimated economic benefit resulting from the improved column flotation operation was an overall 4% increase in Mo circuit recovery. In the third study, real-time measurements obtained from the gas holdup and bulk density sensors were used to infer the pulp density (% solids) in a rougher cell of the bulk flotation circuit. Validation tests demonstrated that this approach provides reliable pulp density measurements. Although promising, more work is required before implementing this approach at HVC.

"Reductive leaching of cobalt (III) from a heterogenite bearing ore has been performed. Pyrite was added to the system and simultaneously bioleached in order to provide ferrous iron as reducing agent. Within such arrangement the iron ions are continuously re-circulated inside a Fe 3+ / Fe 2+ loop. As a result Co(III) is solubilized in the presence of Fe 2+ ions in concentrations well below the stoichiometric requirement. The ore has been initially subjected to acid pre-leaching in order to guarantee that the available Co (II) has been entirely removed. Two technological parameters have been studied to show influence on the degree of cobalt leaching: concentration of ferric iron in the inoculum and the presence of bacteria. The bacterial role could be mainly viewed in supplying ferric ions in the system which chemically react with the pyrite to generate ferrous ions used as Co(III) reducing agent. Co(III) dissolution has been less efficient when the concentration of total iron in the system was low, but also when microorganisms were absent. SEM observations on leached heterogenite have evidenced bacterial attack on the mineral; however the precise role of bacterial presence on cobalt (III) leaching is still to be elucidated.INTRODUCTIONCobalt accompanies quite often copper in secondary oxidized ore deposits (Rumbu, 2013). In such associations cobalt is found both as CoII+ as well as CoIII+ (Deliens, 1974). In contrast to cobalt (III), cobalt (II) is leached relatively easy in sulphuric acid solutions. Cobalt (III) when present in mineral form belongs to the heterogenite mineral group with a simplified chemical formulae Co2O3.H2O or CoOOH. The permanent mould process, which is a favoured process for producing premium quality aluminium casting, is rarely used to produce magnesium alloy parts. This may be attributed different factors such as: the reservation with which the automotive industry considers using magnesium in structural castings; also the relative hot shortness of most magnesium alloys when compared to aluminium A356/357 is another factor. A third reason stems from the fact that the "heat content" of magnesium is much less than that of aluminium, resulting in the difficulty, for a relatively slow process such as permanent mould (versus pressure die casting), to reach a mould dynamic equilibrium temperature sufficiently high to avoid premature freezing and misruns. The present work will address this problem by carrying out controlled cycling of a laboratory mould, poured with aluminium and magnesium alloys. The influence of insulation of the mould and artificial electric heating on the run-in mould temperature will be determined experimentally. A thermal model will be sought for these thermal devices that will allow to predict the thermal behaviour of moulds of different geometry before a single casting is poured. The model will be tested on an industrial casting in a workshop environment.

The successful application of color sorting machines has established sensor-based sorting in the mineral industry in recent years and is considered today as a significant innovation in processing technology. However, we are only at the beginning of the (market) introduction. New sensor systems have been developed, which exploit material properties such as electrical conductivity, magnetization, molecular structure, thermal conductivity etc. This opens up new exciting pre-concentration and upgrading possibilities for many applications such as nickel, gold, copper and other ores as well as for industrial minerals, diamonds and other gemstones.

High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are said to be a good option in new grinding circuits. Due to their low energy consumption compared to other grinding systems such as SAG milling, there is a strong incentive to check their behaviour for certain ore types. With rising energy prices the operation will become even more beneficial in future. As published in the past, the HPGR is claimed to increase the liberation of the valuable mineral component within an ore. An investigation at the research centre of Polysius was conducted to substantiate the liberation behaviour in finish grinding operations. A pilot scale HPGR test unit (POLYCOM MAGRO) with a roll diameter of 950 mm and processing capacity of 80 t/h was used. Grinding tests were completed with a screen and a two stage drying air separation process (SEPOL). Analysis included standard screen analysis, fractional XRF and modern MLA technology. A technique was developed to oppose the amount of produced slimes (resuming bad flotation) against the positive effect of producing high mass fraction at flotation-easy sizes. The paper shows how effective the use of a dry grinding separation could be in terms of production of mass of liberated metal.

Today, systems and machinery usually are designed to meet only one specific customer?s requirements. One reason for this is that underground automation and smart functions are often developed tightly together with a customer. This is natural, since risk and cost can be shared between the customer and the supplier. Nevertheless, when the automation product develops and the market increase this will cause problems: The highly specialized products will not fulfill the next customer?s demands. In order to cope with this problem, Atlas Copco works towards a common platform. Instead of designing solutions for specific customers, we will lift the abstraction and focus on standardized modules. These modules, or function blocks, can then be combined in a large variety of configurations. The benefits of combining modules into products are, for example: increased flexibility when options are available for many machines; easier commissioning and maintenance since less different spare parts and tools are needed; and easier operation since the user interfaces have a similar look and feel. This paper will present the ongoing work towards standardized modules. We will discuss how our Rig Control System (RCS) allows for modular design at Atlas Copco. RCS has number of standardized modules that are used in different surface and underground mining and tunneling equipment. These modules are also used for optional products such as, drilling, radio-remote control, and telematics systems.

"IMBSRE, one of the largest rare earth element (REE) producers in China, produces a rare earth oxide (REO) concentrate as a by-product by floating the middlings stream from a low intensity magnetic separation step in the main iron ore processing stage. As the mine depth has increased, flowsheet changes in the main iron ore circuit have reduced the REO grade and increased the magnetite to REO ratio in the middling product used as flotation feed for the REO circuit. Extensive laboratory work was carried out and identified a new modified hydroxamic acid product, Florrea 8920, that could provide better metallurgical results over the standard hydroxamic acid used as the main collector. This paper briefly reviews the use of hydroxamates in the flotation of oxide minerals, provides detailed information on the different hydroxamates available from Florrea and then provides a case study of the successful implementation of the Florrea 8920 product in a commercial Chinese REE flotation plant. The case study consists of a one year program of pilot plant testing and industrial trials to confirm the results of laboratory tests. The implementation of the new collector resulted in an improvement in grade and recovery to 61% and 64% respectively. The new collector also provided significant economic and environmental benefits.INTRODUCTIONThe flotation of rare earth element (REE) bearing minerals is a topic which has been dominated in the English language literature by the work conducted on the Mountain Pass bastnäsite deposit (Pradip, 1981; Fuerstenau, Pradip, Khan, & Raghavan, 1982; Pradip & Fuerstenau, 1983, 1985, 2013; Fuerstenau & Pradip, 1991; Fuerstenau, Pradip, & Herrera-Urbina, 1992; Herrera-Urbina, Pradip, & Fuerstenau, 2013). By far the most important collector type used for the flotation of rare earth minerals (REM) is hydroxamates. These reagents were initially extensively described as REM collectors in the English literature by Pradip (1981) however they have been successfully applied to numerous other minerals such as: cassiterite (Sreenivas & Padmanabhan, 2002); pyrochlore (Gibson, Kelebek, Aghamirian, & Yu, 2015); hematite, chrysocolla, rhodonite, hubnerite and pyrolusite (Fuerstenau, 2005); and malachite (Lenormand, Salman, & Yoon, 1979) amongst others."
