"IntroductionTHE CANADIAN use of short-period delay-action detonators in coal shooting has been carried on for about two years, mostly in British Columbia, and this is a preliminary report on progress to date. Entire coal faces are being shot successfully with one application of electric current.The electric blasting cap came into use about the beginning of the century. The low-tension electric cap, the type most commonly used, consists essentially of a metal tube containing an initiating explosive. Two wires lead into the end of the cap and are connected inside the cap with a short 'bridge wire .of very high resistance. This •bridge wire is buried in a match-head of a readily ignitable powder composition. When current goes through the lead wires, the bridge wire becomes extremely hot and sets• off the match-head which, in turn, ignites the powder just below it in the tube. This explosion sets off the main charge of explosive. Thus, by connecting a group of caps to a source of electric .current, a number of charges could be exploded simultaneously. This immediately became of great value to mine and quarry operators. Explosives could now be used to break up large masses of material at one time, as against the older, slow method .of blasting small amounts with single charges.The next step was to develop a delay detonator which would allow charges of explosive to fire one after the other, one or two seconds apart. Such detonators allowed first blasts to relieve some rock burden before the next charge fired, giving the second charge an easier task in forcing out more rock, and so on for the rest of the series of charges."

Iron (ferrous ions and ferric ions) plays an important role in the heap leaching of copper sulfide minerals and copper electrowinning. In our previous study, a novel oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) equation only based on the variables of temperature and nominal ferric/ferrous ratio was developed to predict the redox potential of the quaternary H2SO4-Fe2(SO4)3-FeSO4-H2O system, and its applicability was also extended to more complex acidic iron sulfate solutions, especially those generated during the acidic leaching and bioleaching of Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) to recover copper. In this work, the broader range of applicability of this equation to other complicated acidic iron solutions containing copper ions has been extended and determined. Specifically, synthetic iron-containing solutions with copper ions according to the conditions of industrial electrolyte during copper electrowinning and heap leaching have been used to measure the ORP and test the developed equation. It seems that this equation can still be employed to predict the redox potential of the Fe3+/Fe2+ couple for the simulated solutions under conditions related to copper electrowinning and pregnant leaching solution generated during heap leaching over a wide range of solution concentration, nominal Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio and temperature. It has shown that the prediction and measurement of redox potential is highly useful to estimate and understand the iron chemistry of industrial leaching and electrowinning processes. INTRODUCTION It is well-known that iron (ferric or ferrous) ions are widely involved in the hydrometallurgical production of non-ferrous metals such as Cu, Au and Zn, mainly in the form of acidic iron sulfate solutions. As far as Cu is concerned, in a typical leaching-solvent extraction-electrowinning process, ferric ion plays a central role in the heap leaching process and is reduced to ferrous ions in the pregnant leaching solution. Ferric ion is the most important surrogate oxidant and the dissolved ferric/ferrous couple plays an important catalytic role in accelerating the leaching rate with oxygen as an oxidant (Peters et al., 1986; Schlesinger, King, Sole, & Davenport, 2011). In addition, during the traditional electro-winning process, oxygen is evolved at the anode, and copper is reduced at the cathode. A common idea is that iron in the electrolyte in copper electrowinning cell (with total iron of 1–4.4 g/L) plays an important role in reducing the current efficiency. According to the published results (Winand et al., 1975; Dew et al., 1985; Moats et al., 2009; Khouraibchia et al., 2010), thecurrent efficiency decreases linearly with increasing ferric ion concentration and the energy consumption increase was mainly caused by the decrease in current efficiency.

"A pyroxenite-carbonatite complex containing extensive pyrochlore mineralization was discovered during January, 1966, within an exploratory license area held by Consolidated Morrison Explorations Limited. Located 32 miles south of Moosonee, Ontario, the deposit was found under 100 feet of glacial till and Paleozoic sedimentary cover using airborne and ground magnetometer surveys. Exploratory and detailed drilling, totalling 47,625 feet in 85 holes, was completed in outlining the deposit to a maximum depth of 900 feet. Pyrochlore reserves are estimated at 62,000,000 tons averaging 0.52 per cent Cb,05 to a depth of 825 feet. Included in this tonnage is a high-grade section containing 10,000 tons per vertical foot grading 0.82 per cent Cb20 5• The deposit is still open at depth and the intrusive complex has by no means been fully explored.The columbium (niobium) mineralization occurs in a lineated calcite-dolomite host rock which has been intruded along a fault zone within a northeast-trending granulite belt. Potassium-argon dating indicates an age of 1655 million years.Preliminary studies suggest that the complex was intruded in a series of pulses in the form of a partially crystallized mush. The James Bay intrusive is unusual in that it is linear in form and contains only two main rock types - p•yroxenite and carbonatite. Nepheline-bearing syenites and associated rocks are notably absent. Moreover, the pyrochlore is essentially non-radioactive and free from many of the impurities generally associated with other pyrochlores. A test shaft to investigate soil conditions and to provide a 250-ton bulk sample was completed during 1968. Subsequent pilot-plant operations indicate that good quality pyrochlore concelttrates can be produced from this deposit."

"The Cumberland Basin of Nova Scotia has long been considered a structural basin by virtue of the elliptical outcrop and inward dip pattern of the Pennsylvanian outcrops. Recent published and unpublished data indicate that subsidence began in the late Devonian, perhaps resulting from a graben or rift. The Mississippian sediments which filled the growing depression were continental, lacustrine and marine with evaporites. The cessation of the riftforming processes is recorded by the alluvial swamp-type sediments of the Pennsylvanian which filled the depression. In excess of 25,000 feet of Carboniferous rocks are believed to be present in the deepest part of the Basin. Starting with the rift hypothesis, we can speculate on the kinds of sediments, their location and the structural features present beneath the Pennsylvanian surface. Using surface exposures and a limited amount of subsurface data, we theorize that (1) the Mississippian evaporites acted as glide zones which effectively divided the Basin into two horizontal structural layers. The rocks above the evaporites, responding to Appalachian stresses, formed the long diapiric folds with cores of overthickened evaporites. Below the evaporites the structures are related to movements of the rift floor, compaction closures and structures formed by differential horizontal movements of the rift walls. (2) The rift, in its deeper parts, will have more and a greater variety of marine rocks than the outcrops indicate. Should the rift hypothesis be correct, the possibility of finding hydrocarbons is enhanced."

"ACCIDENT PREVENTION in and around coal mines presents many problems of a type which are not encountered in any other industry. This is particularly true of the coal mines in Nova Scotia, where the underground workings are very extensive and the area of exposure to workmen is very great.Roof conditions at the coal faces and in the waste change very rapidly, almost from hour to hour, and it is at these places that the greatest dangers exist and where most mine accidents occur. It is only natural, therefore, that our attention, as far as accident prevention is concerned, should be concentrated •at the coal faces and in the waste, especially in mines where the longwall system is used in the operation •of the seam.It has been said that no hard and fast rules can be set down for timbering at the coal faces and in the waste in the coal mines in this area. We do not subscribe to this theory, however, for the following reasons:On the longwall faces in No. 18 Colliery of the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, where the 'Dosco Miner' has been in operation and where there is a very rigid system of timbering and roof supports, which is strictly followed, only one compensable accident has occurred on those faces from May 2ndJ 1950, to the time of writing this paper, February 3rd, 1953.The 'Dosco Miner' has worked on four different longwall faces in this mine and has mined and loaded some hundreds of thousands of tons of coal."

The level of Si and Cu in the 3xx series of alloys affects the volume fraction of the a-Al dendritic phase and the Al-Si eutectic phase. The volume fraction of these phases in turn affects the feeding conditions during solidification and ultimately the Area Fraction Porosity and Mean Pore Diameter measured in the as-cast structure. This work sets out to establish the relationship between the volume fraction of the a-Al dendritic phase and the Al-Si eutectic phase and the resulting porosity that forms on the Monotonic and High Cycle Fatigue properties. The alloys in question are the Al-9%Si-l %Cu and a Al-7%Si-4%Cu alloys which were cast into V8 performance engine block castings and then heat treated to achieve desired mechanical properties. The engine block castings provided the mechanical and metallographic test samples analyzed for this work.

"The naturally occurring carbonaceous material (CM) in gold bearing ores often exhibits strong-preg-robbing properties. It can adversely affect the process of gold recovery during the cyanidation due to its ability to adsorb, or preg-rob gold from the cyanide leach solution.Treatments of carbonaceous ores with chemical surfactants as blinding agents to limit preg-robbing have shown promising results but at the same time have demonstrated that, if not properly used, could have a strong detrimental effect on the gold recovery process. High dosages of surfactants used as passivating agents for carbonaceous matter could lead to unwanted partial passivation of the activated carbon added during the CIL process and severely impact the gold recovery. Optimal dosage for various surfactants would strongly depend on the ore mineralogy and the parameters of the pulp (temperature, pH, surface area and maturity of the carbonaceous material, etc).This paper describes an experimental study on the effectiveness of various commercially available blinding agents used to minimize the preg-robbing capacity of naturally occurring carbonaceous matter. The scope of the study was to: i) establish the optimum addition of blanking agent (surfactant) to minimize the preg-robbing capacity of the CM in the ore, and ii) establish maximum threshold amounts of blanking agents to be used before it negatively impacts the preg-robbing capacity of the activated carbon used in the CIL process. The study procedure involves standardized doping tests to evaluate the maximum preg-robbing capacity of treated CM, coupled with surface analysis with ToF-SIMS to monitor the presence and the degree of loading of these chemical surfactants on both the naturally occurring CM and the added activated carbon.INTRODUCTIONNaturally occurring carbonaceous material (CM) in gold bearing ores often exhibits strong-preg-robbing properties. "IntroductionALTHOUGH most uranium deposits of the Canadian Shield lie along its western and southern margins, those of the Lake Athabasca region extend easterly along the north shore of the lake and beyond to Charlebois lake. The western end of this belt of deposits, in the vicinity of Goldfields, is 80 miles from the Palaeozoic contact, and its eastern end, at Charlebois lake, is 240 miles from the nearest Palaeozoic rocks.Deposits in this belt may be grouped in four districts, which are, from west to east:(1) The Goldfields district, an area approximately 20 miles square, centred on Beaverlodge lake and extending eastward from St. Joseph's point to Moose channel.(2) A small area in the vicinity of Sucker bay, which is about l0 miles east of Fond du Lac.(3) An area including Middle lake to the northwest shore of Black lake at the Nisto mine.(4) A fairly large area extending northward from the eastern end of Black lake, through Charlebois lake to Spreckley lake.HistoryThe region has stimulated interest in mining circles since the reconnaissance survey of J. B. Tyrrell of the Geological Survey of Canada in l893, who reported concentrations of iron along the north shore of lake Athabasca. The deposits were staked and re-staked up to the early 'twenties' but are too lean to form ore."

Newmont?s Phoenix mine started production in March of 2006. Due to the extreme hardness of the ore, the mill has struggled to meet throughput projections. Grinding studies showed that optimizing the existing circuit would not achieve budgeted throughput. These studies also showed that the pebble crusher was being underutilized due to the inability of the SAG mill to break the rock. The concept was developed to supplement the feed to the existing pebble crusher with a secondary crusher. Models of this process looked favorable so a portable crusher was installed to test the process. The temporary crusher was successful at increasing the throughput by 7% and based on the operating data, plans are currently being developed to install a permanent secondary crushing system in front of the SAG mill. This paper will review the results from the test crusher and the flow sheet for the permanent secondary crusher.

The Rimouski-Matapedia region is along the southwestern extension of the central Siluro-Devonian synclinorium of Gaspe Peninsula. As in Gaspe about 30,000 feet of Siluro-Devonian strata rest on a "basement" of tightly folded Ordovician rocks. The central synclinorium is divided up into two northeasterly trending belts each of which is characterized by distinctive lithologies and patterns of folding. The northwestern belt is gently to moderately folded and includes lithologies which point to a stable environment. The southeastern belt on the other hand is tightly folded and the lithologies indicate a less stable environment. A marked angular unconformity separates the basement from the Siluro-Devonian cover near the north-western margin of the northwestern belt. At the southeastern margin of the southeastern belt the relationship of cover to basement has not been as-certained because of a fault. The northwestern belt has several features significant in the search for petroleum; the Silurian strata are exposed in broad open anticlines

"In the present study, the reduction behavior of composite pellets comprising of iron oxide, synthetic graphite and slags were investigated in a laboratory-scale horizontal tube furnace. Two different types of slags indicating silicate base and aluminate base slags were chosen to examine the effect of slag chemistry on the reduction behavior of pellets. Slag composition of binding materials has influences on the reactions occurring in composite pellets during direct reduction. In-situ high temperature visualization approach was used to observe the slag / iron / carbon interactions at 1773K (1500°C). The off-gases were measured by means of infrared analyzer to determine the reaction rates of the pellets. Different physical appearances during the in situ reaction inferred a strong correlation between the slag composition and internal reactions. In addition, compression tests were conducted to examine physical strength of the pellets. This investigation was carried out to establish feasibility of physical property control of pellets by selecting optimum slag compositions of binding materials INTRODUCTIONCurrently, most of the iron ore mines have facilities that make an ore more usable for the blast furnace operation by improving its physical properties (e.g. pelletizing and sintering). However, during the process, a large amount of fuel is supplied to indurate materials which consequently deteriorate energy efficiency and produce more CO2 emission. Along with increased interests, direct reduced iron (DRI) making process; simply without coke oven or sintering process, has opened the era of clean and environmental friendly iron making process. While some of the established DRI technologies such as Midrex and HYL were restricted to certain locations where natural gas is abundant, coal based technologies using Rotary Hearth Furnace (RHF) such as FASMET and ITmk3 have been developed with regardless of expensive fuel deposit. In addition to the direct use of pulverized non coking coal and fine iron ore, RHF process also has advantages of utilizing waste materials such as EAF dust, biomass and recycled plastics. Nevertheless, there are still many challenges in the coal utilizing technologies as the unprocessed coal and the waste materials contain huge volatiles and ashes. Although recent investigations on volatiles in a RHF process (Sohn and Fruehan, 2005, 2006) have indicated the benefits of coal in terms of iron oxide reduction and have shown feasibility of multi-layer process, carbon composite pellets still have disadvantages because of its weak mechanical bonding strength. As the mixed system with carbon and oxides generates intermediate gases (e.g. CO and CO2) between solid particles, it is difficult to keep its physical state without the help of binding materials. In this reason, industries have been tried to use various binding materials such as bentonite, kaolinite and Portland cement. However, they are still struggling to find out new materials that provide not only sufficient mechanical strength but also metallurgical properties, such as porosity, reducibility and swelling throughout the reduction reaction. Recently, Canadian researchers (Aota et al, 2006) observed enhanced mechanical strength of pellets by using high alumina cement as a binder and concluded that the method could be used to recycle EAF dust as well, but in depth mechanism of reinforced strength has not been concerned. Most of the ashes coming from binders formulate certain type of slag during the reduction process due to its incombustibility. Thus, observation and regulation of slag property is an essential for the control of carbon composite pellet. Yet, only a little thermodynamic consideration from the perspective of slag chemistry has been adapted in the iron and steel making industries as ash has been easily ignored for its tiny proportion. Comminution is the science of size reduction of brittle materials. It is integral to mineral extraction and is one of the most energy intensive processes in the mining industry. There are a number of tests used to quantify the strength of ore, which are then used to size the AG / SAG mill in circuit design. The calculated energy utilized for breakage in these devices is based on the assumptions that the materials treated are of average shape and that the processing equipment is designed to break the ore as efficiently as possible under the given operating conditions. In drop weight tests, it was found that shape significantly influences the measured rock strength. Controlled experiments with variations in blends of rock shape show that mill throughput increases with the addition of weaker shaped rocks.

Anode effects are a phenomenon of the aluminium electrolysis process which produce potent greenhouse gases called PFCs (CF4, C2F6). With concerns surrounding global warming, and increasing regulation of GHG emissions, anode effects have become a significant sustainability issue for aluminium producers. In modem smelters, sophisticated computer control and automated alumina feeding systems allow for very tight control of the alumina concentration in the electrolyte and thus very low anode effect frequencies. Older smelters, however, do not have these systems and must either invest heavily to obtain them, or find other, innovative ways to reduce anode effect frequency. This paper will present the integrated approach to anode effect reduction used in the Vertical Stud Soderberg (VSS) potlines at Kitimat Works. Through an innovative combination of simplified signal analysis, modified alumina feed control logic, anode effect prediction, and anode effect prevention using a pager based communication system, Kitimat W arks has been able to make significant reductions to its anode effect frequency.

Sludge, formed by lime treatment of acidic drainage and stored in tailing ponds of the Sudbury region, contains 5-7% Ni, mostly in a mix of hydroxides with Fe (~ 10%), Mg (~ 10%) and Cu (-0.5%), and Ca (-3.5%) as sulphate. Investigations were conducted to recover nickel by a 2-stage process. In the first stage, the sludge was leached with sulphuric acid at pH 3.2. About 90% of the nickel was extracted, producing a solution, which contained mainly nickel (2 g/L) and magnesium (3.7 g/L). In the second stage, nickel was separated by treating with ozone which recovered 99% of the nickel in the Ni(III) oxidation state as -85% pure nickel oxide-hydroxide (NiOOH) precipitate. The oxide settled and filtered readily. A potential use of the product in battery making is suggested. The leach residue contained 0.5% Ni making it less toxic for disposal. Some physical properties of nickel oxy-hydroxide and process parameters including ozone consumption will be discussed.

Non-contacting, radioisotope density and level gauges are discussed. The characteristics of the more commonly used isotopes, the techniques of detection and the methods of presenting information are reviewed. The gauge parameters of accuracy, response time and long-term stability are tabulated with reference to calibration techniques and operating requirements. Automatic control systems, both pneumatic and electrical, are used in conjunction with density gauges on filter feeds, and in thickener underflow and heavy media processes. These systems are described. Procedures for installation, start-up and operator training are outlined, along with considerations of preventative maintenance and service requirements. Typical gauge system costs, including capital expenditure, installation, start-up and service, are presented, wherever possible, in order to provide a basis of comparison with more conventional systems.

"AbstractSherritt has been applying hydraulic drives to concentrator equipment since 1967. The initial application was made on a bank of 5- by 5-in. slurry pumps. This has now been extended to all slurry pumps requiring less than 40 hp and several conveyors which require variable-speed or low-speed/high-torque characteristics. The pump motors are directly connected through a flexible coupling, whereas the conveyor systems are directly mounted onto the head-pulley shaft extension.The different applications and design concepts will be described, with outlines of the operating and maintenance advantages and disadvantages and costs. The paper also outlines future possible applications, together with the limiting conditions, of such systems.IntroductionSHERRITT GORDON MINES LIMITED has been operating a mining division in Northern Manitoba for almost 50 years. The original mining operation was at Sherridon, Manitoba and was a copper-zinc producer. This mine was exhausted in 1948 and the mining plant was moved north to its present location at Lynn Lake, Manitoba. The Lynn Lake Mine is a nickel-copper producer. Since 1960, two new mines have been discovered and brought into production in the general vicinity of Lynn Lake. The first of these was the Fox Mine, a copper-zinc property operating at 3,000 tons per day from an underground operation. This mine started production in May 1970."

Orogenic gold deposits represent a major class of deposits that are found in various rock types of various ages. Those deposits show a strong structural control that usually complicates their interpretation at the regional and deposit scales. The Rosebel Gold district located in Surinam (South America) is hosted in a Paleoproterozoic greenstone belt of the Guiana Shield, and has been recently classified as one of those orogenic gold deposits. The gold district comprises eight distinct deposits located along three different structural trends and within different rock types. The mineralization is undefonned and shows a strong structural control characteristic of orogenic gold deposits. All the deposits of the Rosebel Gold district have been subject to a detailed structural analysis that has led to the elaboration of a new structural model for the whole gold district, which is now differing considerably from the previous models. This characterization had direct implications at three different scales. 1- While the older models were considering some areas of the property as gold-barren, the new structural model has led to recent exploration campaigns which have revealed positive results. 2- At the deposit scale, the comprehension of the various vein systems and of the folding of the host rocks has helped the establishment of optimized drilling campaigns. 3- At the mining scale, the comprehension of the architecture of the veins helps for the elaboration of optimized mining method. This study thus shows that the structural analysis of orogenic gold deposits is critical, and should be a priority for exploration and production in any mine.

The effects of particle size distribution on metal extraction have been determined from pressure leaching Renzy Mines Limited concentrate with oxygen. Using a pulp density of 30 per cent solids, an oxygen pressure of 80 psig, a temperature of 230°F, a grind of 2.5 hours and a retention of 8 hours resulted in the almost complete dissolution of the nickel and the cobalt and the decomposition of over 96 per cent of the chalcopyrite finer than 20 microns. Only 11 per cent of the chalcopyrite coarser than 20 microns was reduced to smaller than 20 microns.

"In spite of the applications of DEM models to emulate the elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio and strengths of isotropic rock in laboratory scale, extensions to anisotropic rock and larger engineering scale still have many challenges to overcome such as robust verification and validation against observed field case. In this study, a discrete element modeling was performed in order to represent a transversely isotropic rock such as shale, and the upscaled model was applied to foundation and borehole problems using PFC2D. The applicability of the upscaled rock mass model was verified by an analytical solution. The DEM modeling of stress redistribution induced by an applied surface line load compares well with Boussinesq’s isotropic solution and anisotropic solution given by Bray. The borehole model with a circular opening under biaxial stress was compared with both isotropic and anisotropic solutions resulting in good agreement. The abilities of DEM model to investigate the micromechanisms accounting for complex macroscopic behaviors and to predict the macroscopic behavior are discussed.The results demonstrate that DEM modeling has the potential to be applied to anisotropic rock mechanics problems on larger engineering scales such as wellbore stability problems especially in shale formations. Furthermore, the effect of anisotropy modeled through this study may be able to explain failure behavior of anisotropic rock encountered frequently in real cases.INTRODUCTIONAnisotropy is prevalent in various types of rocks, especially in shale that contain a set of parallel bedding planes. These weak planes in various forms are sources of large deformation and low shear strength and contribute significantly to the anisotropic behavior of rocks (Amadei, 1996; Cho et al., 2012; Kim et al., 2012). As elastic and strength behavior of anisotropic rock is substantially different from that of isotropic rock, proper consideration of anisotropy is of great importance. There is extensive of experimental evidence showing the anisotropy of shale. Niandou et al. (Niandou et al., 1997) analyzed the plastic deformation and failure mechanisms of Tournemire shale were highly dependent on the orientation of bedding planes. Cho et al. Fjaer and Nes (Fjaer and Nes, 2013) performed uniaxial and triaxial compressive strength tests using Mancos shale, and they observed that the shear sliding along the planes of weakness before the occurrence of a major failure can reduce the strength of anisotropic rock. The recent research has demonstrated that the anisotropy of rock is an important consideration in rock engineering."
