North Carolina is the leading state in the USA in feldspar, mica, and spodumene production. Mixed feldspar, spodumene, mica and quartz are mined from hard rock, open pit deposits and recovered by flotation from the fresh pegmatite type ores. Potash feldspar, mica, clay and quartz are recovered from weathered decomposed pegmatites. The North Carolina State University has a Minerals Research Laboratory in Asheville with trained personnel and flexible pilot plant equipment. The flowsheets for the feldspar, spodumene and mica producing companies and for large phosphate and glass sand flotation plants were developed and tested in Asheville. Examples and problems of pegmatite flotation are demonstrated with flowsheets and slides.

Predictions of coal cleaning plant performance from the washability data are traditionally used at the conceptual design stage of a coal preparation plant to confirm process selection. The development of computer programs which simulate the operation of a plant facilitates the optimization of product yield and quality, and ultimately proceeds. It is shown that the optimum is sensitive to changes in mine operations and market price structure. A computerized review of operations is thus recommended as an on-going activity .

Recycling of e-scrap is often performed by utilizing a pyrometallurgical Cu smelting process. Several valuable metals, including precious metals, can be efficiently recovered through the Cu smelting process. However, recovery of Sn is quite difficult because it is distributed in slag during the smelting process. Sn is used as solder and plating in electronic devices, and its recycling will be more important in the future. In light of this background, a pretreatment process that can extract Sn directly and selectively from e-scrap was developed in this study. The proposed Sn extraction process involves alkaline leaching using iodate ions, IO 3, as an oxidizing agent. We conducted leaching experiments for Sn, Sn-Ag-Cu alloy solder, and Cu, and the effective dissolution of Sn was confirmed. In principle, the electrodeposition of Sn from the leach solution and regeneration of IO3 are possible by a subsequent electrolysis process. The results obtained in this study suggest that the proposed leaching process can be an effective and useful pretreatment for Cu-smelting-based e-scrap recycling. INTRODUCTION Electronic scrap (e-scrap), including waste printed circuit boards (PCBs), is one of the fastest growing waste treatment streams in the global urban environment. E-scrap contains numerous valuable metallic elements, including Cu, Sn, and precious metals, in rich quantity. Furthermore, some metals and other materials contained in e- scrap are hazardous to human health and the environment when they are not properly managed. The recycling of e- scrap is therefore a major concern in terms of resource supply and waste treatment, and it has been performed by many companies using a variety of methods.

Northern British Columbia is a term which probably conveys to various individuals quite different meanings. To the average person it signifies an area of indefinite size and indefinite position which may start at Prince Rupert, Stewart, or somewhere else, and end at Alaska or .the Yukon. Many people, in their conception, fail to encompass in their mind's eye that vast tract of land lying ~o the east of the panhandle of Alaska. Few realize that the area north of an east-west line through Stewart represents more than one-third of the Province and is, of course, the part most appropriately designated as northern British Columbia. This section, more especially the northernmost 100,000 square miles, from political, geographic, and economic viewpoints stands isolated perhaps more than any other part of British Columbia. Unlike the rest of the Province, it has no coast line, being cut off from the Pacific ocean by a narrow strip of Alaska. It is bounded on the north by the Yukon, and on the east by Alberta. In the south this northernmost 100,000 square miles is limited by a divide of rugged mountainous country separating the drainage basins of the Stikine and Liard rivers from those to the south.

Roast-reduction smelting (RRS) of nickel concentrate, combined with flash smelting of copper concentrate, was one of the process options that Inco considered as a means of meeting its 1994 sulphur dioxide abatement target at its Copper Cliff operations. RRS involves deep roasting the nickel concentrate in fluid bed roasters. The roaster off-gas is treated in a sulphuric acid plant, and the low sulphur calcine is reduction smelted with coke in an electric furnace to yield a sulphur- deficient matte. The latter material is converted to Bessemer matte in Peirce-Smith converters, with minimal evolution of sulphur dioxide, and the converter slag is reverted to the electric furnace. Excellent nickel and cobalt recoveries (Ire obtained. This paper discusses the development of RRS, including extensive commercial scale testing at Inco's Thompson Smelter, and its key operating parameters.

"This paper is a market-oriented review of the industry's present and forecasted performance, considering some of the principal factors influencing natural resource development. The author illustrates the steady consumption growth of nickel, and stresses the need for a quantitative long-range approach to production, consumption and the supply/ demand balance on a worldwide basis. Objective consideration of this data exposes some popular misconceptions. The possibility of near-term undersupply of nickel is discussed in relation to historically rapid changes in inventories and demand patterns. What is the significance of the increasing reliance on lateritic sources? New• facilities, new processing methods and new product forms are illustrated as further evidence of the industry's determination to satisfy the needs and preferences of nickel consumers. Examples indicate how product forms must accommodate to fast-evolving end-use technology. A review of nickel's price performance is used as a base from which to explore tomorrow's price trends."

The increase in the number of higher and larger buildings is expected to require the buildings' outer wall maintenance process, which includes cleaning, painting and monitoring, still depends on manpower. In this study, we proposed the robotic building maintenance system and aimed to reduce the jerk effect through the motion control of the system, improve the performance of the maintenance task, and ensure longer life and safety by improving the stability of the building structure and robot system. Through the results of the motion control and field-test with the proposed system, in specific, horizontal sliding module (HSM) showed that the jerk oriented by impact force was significantly reduced, feasibility of the proposed method was verified, and the robotic challenges were explored.

During the last few years, geophysical methods have been introduced to aid mining geologists and mining engineers in locating mineral deposits. These methods have been developed as the result of investigations of various physical characters of minerals and rocks. In prospecting for ore-bodies, electrical methods have proved most successful. These methods are based on the great differences in electrical properties, and especially in conductivity, between ore minerals and rock minerals. The electrical resistance of the common minerals, rocks, and ores in ohms per cubic céntimeter is given in the following table: [ ] The first attempts at electrical prospecting were based on observing currents of polarization around certain ore bodies, which currents it was possible to measure. This method has been developed by Prof. Schlumberger and has been utilized by him successfully. He is represented on this continent by Mr. Sherwin Kelly, who has successfully operated the method here.

"How can the durability of asphalt pavement be doubled without increasing highway budgets? Asphalt containing asbestos can provide the desired performance with additional costs being made up by longer life. The addition of a low percentage of asbestos to an asphalt mix permits a higher asphalt content without any consequent loss in stability. It is mainly the higher asphalt content that provides improved performance and durability, although the fibrous reinforcement plays a key role in preventing the propagation of micro-fissures. "The Canadian Exploration Incentive Program (CEIP), which was announced by the federal government on May 3, 1988, promises to maintain the viability of flow-through shares as a financing mechanism which has proven to be so crucial to the health of the junior exploration sector. This month, Tax Notes examines, the main features of CEIP, which will come into play on January J, 1989. IntroductionOn May 3,1988, the Honourable Marcel Masse, Minister of Energy Mines & Resources, and the Honourable Gerald Merrithew, Minister of State (Forestry and Mines) announced the Canadian Exploration Incentive Program (CEIP). Under CEIP, the federal government will make cash payments to eligible applicants equal to 30% of eligible exploration expenses. CEIP payments will be available with respect to both mineral, and oil and gas, exploration. In essence, the program will replace the ""mining exploration depletion allowance"" (MEDA) presently applicable to mineral exploration, and the Canadian Exploration and Development Incentive Program (CEDIP) which is presently available to the oil and gas exploration sector.This paper discusses briefly the main features of CEIP insofar as the program will affect mineral exploration. The comments herein are based on the Canadian Exploration Incentive Program Act which received Royal Assent on July 21, 1988, and on a discussion paper which was released by EM&R in May 1988. The bulk of the rules relating to the program will be in the form of regulations which have yet to be finalized. It is understood that EM&R would like to have the regulations in force by October I, 1988, when the oil and gas portion of CEIP becomes effective. Control of the quenching capacity of the cooling water is of primary importance for maintaining the quality and recovery rate of ingots produced by direct chill casting. Industrially, this can be done using a cylindrical metallic probe undergoing rapid quenching by direct immersion in a reservoir filled with casting water. Such a test rig originally developed at Alcan Arvida Research and development Centre was modified and used to assess the role of key parameters affecting the boiling heat transfer. During the tests, the probe of the instrument undergoes the effects of different heat transfer mechanisms. An experimental study was performed in order to clarify the details of the probe-water heat transfer during rapid quenching. The heat flux along the surface was determined by mathematical modeling using the measured temperature signals, while the corresponding heat transfer regimes like stable and unstable film boiling, nucleate boiling and natural convection were identified by the analysis of high-speed video recordings. "The Last Chance claim is about 13 miles north of the village of Nicola and northeast of the city of Merritt; in the south-central part of British Columbia. It lies within Nicola mining division on the northern slope of Swakum mountain; near its summit. It may be reached by means of a branch road from the Kamloops-Merritt highway that leaves the highway at Nicola.The property was originally staked as a copper prospect by Oscar Schmidt in 1916. A number of cuts were driven and a test shipment of 22 tons of ore, averaging 4.6 per cent copper, was made from the surface showings. The property was then optioned to Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, Limited, who did a small amount of drilling, after which the option was abandoned. The same year an option was secured by Northwestern Mines, Limited, of Spokane, and a SO-foot shaft was sunk. This option also was abandoned and after a number of years the property lapsed, but was re-staked in 1942 as a tungsten prospect along with other claims, and was drilled for the Metals Controller in 1943."

"In the past year, mining at the Doyon Mine has shifted entirely from open pit to underground. The mine produced 234 692 ounces of gold in 1989 and is expected to produce 225000 ounces in 1990. The Doyon Mill has been running slightly above design capacity, and recovery has increased 3%.IntroductionThe Doyon Mine is located 25 miles east of Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec (Figure I).It is a joint venture owned by Lac Minerals and Cambior, with each holding a 50% interest. Lac Minerals operates the mine under the direction of a management committee.Production at the Doyon Mine began in 1980 with the start up of the Main Zone pit. Shortly thereafter the Doyon Mine became the largest open pit gold producer in Canada.In 1983, a ramp leading to the fourth level and exploration drifts were driven. Results were very encouraging, therefore the decision was made to sink a 2150-foot deep shaft, which was completed in 1986.In mid-1986, production began in the West pit, while underground mining of the West Zone started shortly thereafter, at the end of the same year.In 1987 the mill capacity was increased to 3300 tons per day and the Main Zone underground operations commenced."

Comminution is the science of size reduction of brittle materials. It is integral to mineral extraction and is one of the most energy intensive processes in the mining industry. There are a number of tests used to quantify the strength of ore, which are then used to size the AG / SAG mill in circuit design. The calculated energy utilized for breakage in these devices is based on the assumptions that the materials treated are of average shape and that the processing equipment is designed to break the ore as efficiently as possible under the given operating conditions. In drop weight tests, it was found that shape significantly influences the measured rock strength. Controlled experiments with variations in blends of rock shape show that mill throughput increases with the addition of weaker shaped rocks.

In recent years, there has been a heightened interest in the hydrometallurgical processing of sulfide ores and concentrates (especially copper sulfide ores and concentrates) mostly in the USA and Chile. Currently, hydrometallurgical operations account for about 30% of the primary copper production. In the present research, the leaching phenomena of IOCG (iron-oxide hosted copper-gold) ores and concentrates were studied. The IOCG ore, which is characterized as having a predominant amount of magnetite with fine chalcopyrite, is currently the center of attention for new copper resources. Heap leaching of IOCG ore is desirable because of its low cost. However, the leaching characteristics of the ores and concentrates and the mechanisms of copper leaching require investigation. This study defines the factors, which affect the leaching operation, such as the ORP, pH and oxidizing agents. Based on these results, the optimal leaching conditions are provided for pilot column leaching test and ultimately, commercial operations.

"The polymetallic sulfide ore in Jiama county of Tibet contains 0.78% Cu, 0.046% Mo, 0.31 g/t Au and 17.9 g/t Ag in average. However, heavy loss of valuable metals was observed using high-pH process and Butyl xanthate as the collector. In this paper, the flotation was optimized through the adoption of a novel collector C-7, which is a mixture of xanthate ester and thionocarbamate. This collector showed better flotation performance under weak base conditions. The recoveries of Cu, Mo, Au and Ag increased to 93.24%, 84.60%, 78.13% and 75.41%, respectively, under 15 g/t of C-7 at pH of 8.0. The adsorption mechanism of C-7 was investigated by micro-flotation tests, zeta potential measurements, FTIR analysis and adsorption quantity measurements. Chemisorption of C-7 on chalcopyrite surface is demonstrated with adsorption density 3.8 times higher than on pyrite.INTRODUCTIONXanthates are the most commonly used collectors of strong collecting ability for separating copper sulfide minerals from gangue in froth flotation. However, the selectivity of xanthates themselves is poor to realize separation of chalcopyrite and pyrite whose floatability are quite similar (Heyes & Trahar, 1977; Chandraprabha, Natarajan, & Modak, 2004). High pH process with xanthates as collectors is proved effective in copper-sulfur separation and is widely used in treatment of copper sulfide ore flotation (Smith, 1996; Valdivieso, Cervantes, Song, Cabrera, & Laskowski, 2004). This method could get ideal separation results, but large amount of lime must be added, and could bring about increased cost, device corrosion and environmental pollution. In addition, there could also be high depression and heavy loss of associated noble metal such as Mo, Au and Ag. Consequently, a large amount of research has been conducted on substitutions of xanthates for selective flotation of copper sulfide ores under low pH conditions (Gholivand, Khodadadian, & Ahmadi, 2010; Li, 2010)."

Produced by the conventional TIG welding CMSX-4 welds had been studied. It was demostrated that microstructure of welds depended on filler materials, welding parameters and joint design. Epitaxial solidification of CMSX-4 clad deposits produced a directionally solidified structure while welding with the similar filler material. Defects free clad welds were obtained by TIG welding without preheating using similar and dissimilar filler materials.
