The physico-chemical interaction between minerals such as olivine, chromite and serpentine and the ions most commonly present in solution, like Ca and Mg and flotation reagents such as EDTA and oleic acid was investigated. The study was conducted via release tests, electrophoretic measurements and microflotation of selected minerals coming from the Kukes deposit (Albania).

The reactivity of clay minerals and variety of these reactions are greater than any other known colloidal material. While it is acknowledged that clay minerals can cause problems in mineral flotation, the literature contains conflicting evidence, particularly with respect to the effect of clays on froth stability. It is well known that achieving and maintaining optimum froth stability is an influential factor in determining froth flotation performance. However, the presence of clay minerals in the ore is a major challenge to obtaining a stable froth. In fact, clay minerals could reduce froth flotation performance by both decreasing and increasing froth stability. The mechanism by which clay minerals affect froth stability is not fully understood and needs to be investigated further. In order to improve flotation performance, reliable knowledge of the effect of clay minerals on froth stability is essential which is discussed in this paper. Sillimanite, chemically named Aluminum silicate, 3Al2O3SiO2 is one of the three forms of alumino silicate polymorphs and commonly encountered in aluminous metamorphic, plutonic, and volcanic rocks and their weathering products. Most of the sillimanite deposits are granular and are of high grade available in coastal areas as associated mineral along with Titanium bearing minerals namely ilmenite, rutile etc. Sillimanite is one of the widely accepted raw materials for the manufacture of high alumina refractories (55-60 % alumina) or bricks. Sillimanite based refractory bricks are used for the lining of Blast furnaces, Arc furnaces, Soaking pits, Reheating furnaces of iron and steel, rotary kilns for cement manufacturing and general kilns for lime production. Considering the vast potential of unexploited sillimanite reserves in India, M/s Trimex Sands Pvt. Ltd., (TSPL)has set up a Mineral Sand Processing plant in 2010 at Andhra Pradesh with a capacity to produce about 50,000 tons of sillimanite per annum besides the production of various heavy minerals such as ilmenite, rutile, zircon and garnet. Traditionally in India, sillimanite is upgraded by froth flotation technique using Oleic acid as a collector cum frother, sodium silicate as depressant and soda ash as pH regulator. At TSPL, Conventional mechanical float cells are installed to float sillimanite. In addition to the usual problems associated with conventional cells, poor flow ability of the sillimanite concentrate is experienced in dry circuit due to the presence of sodium oleate. Fine garnet in the sillimanite concentrate contributes to high iron content in the final product, making sillimanite separation a nightmare for operators (lower recoveries coupled with inferior grades). Various efforts were made to improve the performance of the circuit such as introduction of additional frother like MIBC, optimizing the operating parameters such as pulp density, collector dosage, depressant dosage, air flow rate, pH etc., use of collector aids, stage wise addition of reagents etc. The challenges faced to produce a sillimanite product with stringent quality norms and the efforts made to improve the grade and recovery are described in this paper. "Relating flotation performance to the electrochemical characteristics of a pulp is complex both in fundamental research and in practice. In the case of thiol collectors, different Eh values in the flotation system can result in the formation of the dimer or the metal thiolate which may or may not enhance the hydrophobicity of the mineral. Reducing or oxidizing conditions in a flotation system, viz. changing the Eh value, are usually manipulated to achieve an optimum flotation response by control of pH and dissolved oxygen levels in the system. A variation in pulp potential may also be achieved by the addition of potential modifiers such as sodium hydrosulphide (NaHS), sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). There exists anecdotal evidence which suggests that the addition of small amounts of H2O2 to the flotation process can improve sulphide mineral recovery. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of the addition of the potential modifier, H2O2, on sulphide mineral recoveries and grades in the flotation of sulphide minerals from two copper bearing ores from China and compare the results to those obtained for a PGM bearing ore South Africa. Batch flotation tests were conducted using the three different ores at the natural pH of the different systems, in the presence of a xanthate collector and the absence and presence of H2O2 as a potential modifier. The results indicate that the addition of carefully controlled low concentrations of H2O2 resulted in improvements in flotation performance. INTRODUCTIONElectrochemical potential as a control parameter in the flotation of sulphide minerals has been widely studied (Allison et al., 1972; Gardner and Woods, 1979; Ross and Van Deventer, 1985; Chander, 2003; Woods, 2003; Javadi, 2013). There is concensus that in order to be recovered during flotation, sulphide minerals require a suitable redox environment. During the flotation process thiol collectors and sulphide minerals are involved in electrochemical reactions which result in the formation of hydrophobic species at the mineral surface (Finkelstein and Goold, 1972; Rand and Woods, 1984). Sulphide minerals act as semiconductors and electrons are transferred during the interaction of the mineral with collector. The resultant potential difference and its magnitude are responsible for the transfer of electrons and the rate of the reaction (Bard and Faulkner, 2001; Fuerstenau et al., 2007). Reducing or oxidizing conditions in a flotation system, viz. changing the Eh value, may be manipulated to achieve an optimum flotation response by control of pH and dissolved oxygen levels in the system (Heyes and Trahar, 1979). The use of potential modifiers viz. reducing or oxidizing agents which include H2O2, NaClO, and NaHS, is an alternative method by which to control the potential of the pulp in a flotation system which may or may not promote the flotation of desired minerals (Rao, 2004). The oxidizing agent, H2O2, undergoes a cathodic reaction which can result in the enhanced flotation of valuable minerals. The potential of the system is increased which results in a shift in the mixed potential of a mineral. The magnitude of the over-potential influences the rate of the oxidation process and thus the flotation response of sulphide minerals (Kocabag and Guler, 2008). Equation 1 shows the proposed oxidation of xanthate by H2O2 (Lipkina and Streltysn, 1970)."

"The flotation separation of sulphides bulk concentrate containing Cu, Zn, Mo and Bi, which was obtained by both table-flotation of gross sand of gravity separation of wolframite and bulk flotation of wolframite slimes using butyl xanthate and oil No. 2, etc., has been conducted by using the cyanide process in the tungsten concentrator. The process has problems of high reagents consumption (25 tonne of cyanide dosage per year) and mineral processing cost (800~1000 RMB reagents cost per tonne of by-product concentrates), high mutual containing loss in the by-product concentrates and serious environmental pollution caused by lots of cyanide-containing wastewater. In order to solve this problem, a new cyanide-free separation technology is studied, which is used to process this sulphides bulk concentrate with 8.68% Cu, 8.98% Zn, 0.26% Mo, 1.58% Bi and 40.12% S. The results of the closed circuit test show that Cu, Zn, Mo and Bi can effectively be separated from this sulphide minerals concentrate by using the reasonable flotation-gravity flowsheet, high-efficiency collectors and regulators simultaneously. The metallurgical recovery and concentrate grade are as follows: molybdenum recovery is 94.63% with 50.62% Mo content; copper recovery is 85.18% with 29.29% Cu content; zinc recovery is 75.92% with 46.49% Zn content; total Bi recovery is 65.08% with 16.86% Bi content. The new technology is an alternative to the cyanide process due to its low cost for reagents, satisfying separation results and economic profits, and solves the problem of environmental pollution caused by the use of large quantities of cyanide. Some important parameters in separating the Cu-Zn-Mo-Bi sulphides concentrate are also introduced in this paper. This study provides pretty good technical support for separating the polymetallic sulphide ores containing Cu, Zn, Mo and Bi by cyanide-free technique."

"Sand and gravel are the second and third largest minerals in production in Brazil, and this is increasing noticeably. The extraction of natural sand from river beds is increasingly restricted and most of the sand used in large cities comes in from more than 150 km away, resulting in high transportation costs. As a result, it has become more common to use crushed rock as artificial sand. The main difficulties in this process are controlling the shape of the particles and the content of deleterious materials, such as mica. Within this situation, this paper presents an alternative to using artificial sand for concrete use. Our procedure involves the following steps: a) sampling sand from different production days, b) characterizing the bulk sample by particle size and shape distribution, chemical composition by X ray fluorescence and mineralogical composition by X ray diffraction, c) removing fine grains by air classifier, d) performing intensive attrition with high pressure washing and e) characterizing products. The results demonstrated that this sample contains a huge proportion of fine grains and a notable content of mica, which is distributed along all sieve fractions. The presence of mica makes the use of sand in concrete unfeasible, moreover scanning electron microscopy analysis demonstrated that this phylossilicate is finely grained and associated with coarse fractions. Thus, the removal of fine fractions made possible a partial reduction in mica content. Furthermore, intensive attrition demonstrated that the procedure was efficient to remove most of the mica while also reducing sharp edges, which improved the shape of these particles."

The recycling schemes of copper mineral to a copper raw ore produced in China is investigated in this paper, of which is aimed at copper concentrate‘s grade is over 26.00% and recovery is over 90.00%. The primary copper mineral the raw ore is chalcopyrite and the main gangue minerals are quartz, orthoclase, albite, clinochlore and phlogopite. There are four useful metal elements contained in the copper raw ore, which are Cu, Pb, Zn, Au and Ag, and the grade of each is 3.75%, 0.01%, 0.11%, 0.31 and 483.5 g/t. Two floating recycling schemes and its corresponding flotation reagent system were determined. The results show that calcium oxide, sodium carbonate and sodium sulphide were used as regulators, sodium n-butylxanthate was used as collector and terpenic oil was used as frother in two floating recycling schemes are effective. The open-circuit test’s results show that the copper mineral contained in raw ore can be effective collected, and both concentrates gotten through two schemes are up to grade.

The effect of the acid anion on chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) leaching has been examined, under care-fully controlled conditions, in a range of acids in stirred reactors and columns at pH 1. Solution speciation calculations were performed to determine possible rate controlling species. The relative leach rates of Cu from chalcopyrite can be explained quantitatively entirely on the basis of solution speciation without the need to invoke any rational relating to surface structure/speciation. The rate of Cu release is first order with respect to Fe3+ activity. The stirred batch reactor experiments at fixed pH 1, Eh of 750 mV (SHE) and 75? showed that chalcopyrite leach rates were rapid in both HClO4 and H2SO4 with 100 % Cu recovery after 73h and 97 h respectively. However, the leach rate in H2SO4 was slower as compared to the HClO4 leach due to a slower increase in the activity of Fe3+ due to the formation of FeSO4-. The presence of Cl- in the leaches (HCl and H2SO4 with NaCl added) led to a low activity of Fe3+, due to the high activity of FeCl2+, resulting in very low leach rates. For the column leach experiments dissolution of Fe and Cu from the pH 1 HCl eluted chalcopy-rite column with quartz proceeded at several times the rate of any other column (chalcopyrite with and without quartz and/or pyrite leached with H2SO4, HClO4, HCl). Three observations indicate that galvanic interactions are not leach rate controlling role: a) The rate of leaching was not uniformly increased for the non-quartz containing columns where the two sulfide minerals, chalcopyrite and pyrite, are in physical contact as compared to the analogous quartz containing columns where they are not; b) there exists a reasonable correlation between the rate of Cu release and the effluent Fe3+ activity for all columns thus indicating that the leach rate is determined by solution speciation; and c) in all cases the proportion of Fe to Cu leached indicates preferential dissolution of Cu over Fe. However, the proportion of Fe to Cu is either the same or greater than expected on the basis of the single mineral columns. This indicates that chalcopyrite is not dissolving preferentially to pyrite.

"South Africa is the world?s second largest producer of titanium bearing minerals, but apart from producing titanium mineral concentrate to form TiO2 slag, little further value is added in South Africa to mined minerals. Various studies were undertaken by both government and the private sector in an un-coordinated manner until 2007 when the South African Department of Science and Technology (DST) planned and adopted a national strategy to establish a local titanium metal industry through the research and development of key technologies that would provide a competitive advantage to such a local industry. The strategy entailed a two-pronged approach in the development of this capability, viz. simultaneous investments in the development of high-level human capital and technology in the fields of titanium metal powder production and downstream titanium metal powder processing technologies. To date significant progress has been made to establish research and/or pilot scale facilities in the following technical areas: TiCl4 production technology, titanium powder production technology, high energy milling of titanium powder, metal injection moulding facilities, rapid production of large components using laser additive manufacturing technology, investment casting of titanium, resource efficient machining of titanium and friction stir welding of titanium. Supporting technologies are also at an advanced stage through investments in titanium powder spheroidization and direct rolling of titanium powder. The intent with investment in some of these areas is not to develop new technology per se, but rather to establish local capability that will position South Africa to collaborate with other organisations in the world so that technologies can be acquired and transferred when needed in the future."

The experiment adopted magnetic separation-priority flotation (first to float copper,then float lead) combined technology to deal with a complex Cu,Pb ,Zn multi-metals ore which has high sulphur content, difficult to separate Cu, Pb ,Zn minerals from sulphur and separate Cu from Pb. Floatable pyrrhotite was separated through magnetic separation which could eliminate the adverse effect on the flotation followed up. And then adopting the priority flotation process to recover the Cu, Pb ,Zn from the magnetic tailings. In priority, flotation Cu, BP(a kind of ethionine ester collector ) and ethyl xanthogenate were used as the collector, LD-1 and sodium sulphite were used as the depressant.The depressants combined with humic acid sodium and lime were used for chalcopyrite ? pyrite separation to further improve the copper concentrate grade. Considering the raw ore that contain 0.32% copper, 0.54% lead and 25.54% sulfur. The copper concentrate grade is 23.61%. The lead content of copper concentrate is only 0.85% . The recovery of copper is 75.03%,and the lead concentrate grade is 54.58%, the copper content of lead concentrate is only 0.81% and the recovery of lead concentrate is 62.24%. The mineral processing indexes were excellent, finally realizing the high effective separation of Cu, Pb , Zn and pyrite. This technique provides a new approach to highly utilize complex copper-lead-zinc ore.

Traditional mineral processing techniques are more and more difficult to recover the increasingly low grade phosphate ores today. Although bioleaching method has been attempted to process low grade ores in hydrometallurgical field due to economical and environmental reason, it has been hardly used in leaching phosphate ore at home and abroad. Strains of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans were collected and separated from the acid drainage of a coal mine in Anhui province of China. Ultraviolet irradiation and Microwave inducement were applied to the bacterial cultivation process to produce strains of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Acidithi-obacillus ferrooxidans able to tolerate extremely low pH conditions and generate sulphuric acid by oxidizing elemental sulfur or sulphide and the mutagenesis can achieve higher leaching rate. The bioleaching result will improve more by the addition of Tween series surfactants.

One of the most vigorous of the continuous improvement methodologies is Six Sigma. While usually associated with improving manufacturing and product quality, leading manufacturers are using it to improve their extended supply chain and logistics capabilities. At the same time they are improving reliability, some companies have cut hundreds of millions of dollars of fat out of their supply chain. Mine to Mill optimization is a transformation of culture from processing tons to processing a quality feed size distribution which reduces the overall operational costs and add the highest value to the mine. This is not a constant endeavor. As such, a dynamic performance monitoring and diagnosis is necessary. We will review a systemic way to performance improvements and avoiding metal losses from the blast to the metals. We show the requirements of using raw data to analysis the data to define operational maps which provide assistance to run the mine and mill. A case study is provided with the mine and mill data was integrated combining process control and quality information resulting in reduction of water and energy consumption while improving the overall value of the mine. The results of reengineering the current system with this SIX SIGMA Strategy had the following results: an increase of ore milling: 4.6% decrease of mil power: 3.9%, decrease of fresh water consumption: 6.8%, with a total of net profits: US$ 31.8 million, the PI System infrastructure contribution: US$ 7.95 million. These estimates were for the period 2009/04/04 to 2009/12/31.

"Fine free gold at a size of minus 250-100 µm can be effectively recovered from mineral materials (buried clay placers, saprolites, gold-bearing aggregates, technogenic sands etc.), or MM, using some developed and implemented in practice cost-effective basic technological schemes of MM processing at every stage: exploration, main concentration processes, upgrading of gravity concentrates etc. Such technologies are based on mineral materials composition, different content of fine gold mass fractions, and include improved two-stage sluicing technology, jigging technology, advanced technology and integrated technology. The main operation principle of the given technologies is gravity concentration. They provide recovery of fine gold of any size from MM, including gold finer than 100 µm, using concentration systems and plants with a capacity of 1-2 and up to 100-200 m3 per hour. Selection of a cost-effective technology depends on its technical and economic viability regarding to mineral material composition, optimum performance and concentration rate. The developed technologies of mineral materials concentration establish a balance between technological, technical and economic factors, and ensure profitable development of deposits containing free gold and characterized by a complex composition of concentrating material. Free gold recovery with these systems increases by 2.0-2.5 times for gold particles at a size of minus 250+100 µm and 10-30 times for gold particles of minus 100 µm, compared to conventional sluicing systems. The Irgiredmet Institute has developed and supplies primary concentrate washing machines for upgrading gravity concentrates of up to 100 mm in size, with a capacity of 1.0-5.0 m3/h, fitted with various production equipment including pyro- and hydrometallurgical systems. Additionally, the Irgiredmet Institute develops and manufactures systems of mechanized processing of geological and technological samples (UOMP; registered design certificate No.27505, Russia) designed for complete recovery of free gold in the process of geological samples handling and decreasing of a human factor influence. A system includes a package of technologically associated disintegration, classification and concentration equipment with some “know-how” elements that provide effective recovery of fine gold at the exploration stage. A number of Irgiredmet’s patented technologies and systems (patents of the Russian Federation) have no equivalents in the field of mineral processing and provide designing of technologically practical and cost-effective flowsheets that offer higher recovery of gold of different sizes (fine gold), at every stage of processing of mineral materials including basic concentration processes, upgrading and exploration etc."

Europe retains a modest position in world mining activity in terms of scale of production and mineral reserves but maintains a non-negligible role in the world mining industry. The concept of sustainable development resting on three pillars of economics, environment and social development has become an increasingly important factor in the European mining sector and a major influence on the related policies of the European Commission. Members of European mining industry shall conduct their activities according to the principles which promote sustainable development. A successful minerals planning policy should create the legal administrative environment that is necessary to ensure the sustainable supply of minerals to society within the framework of sustainable development. Members of the European mining industry shall conduct their activities according to principles which promote sustainable development. The challenge for sustainability is to find a balance between securing minerals supply, protecting the environment and achieving social progress. The point of balance depends on the range of policies adopted by governments. In this paper the development of the sustainability of the mining sector in EU and the social component of sustainability in the mineral industry is discussed.

Low grade oxidized iron ores are usually not economic to utilize. However, the development of SLon magnetic separators and other new technologies make the process cost lower and lower. In this paper, several low-grade oxidized iron ore process flowsheets are introduced. The key procedure is that at the early stage, SLon magnetic separators are applied to discharge as more tails as possible with very low cost, only a small portion of rough concentrate going to the cleaning stage, showing the new technologies are profitable for such iron ores.

This paper mainly reported separation manganese silver oxidized ores process by amylum de-gradation reduction and its influencing factors. When dosage is given according to nMn : nH2SO4 : n(C6H10O5)n : nH2O=1:k21.8: k116.66:30, the amount of up to 95.93% Mn leach rate and less than 2% silver loss can be obtained. Cyanidation process was used to extracted silver from leaching Mn residues. Silver leach rate could reach 94.15% at consumed amount of 1kg/t NaCN for 1h. Silver leach recovery rate was more than 92.27% by leaching Mn and cyanidation two-step processes so manganese and silver were separated effectively.

Effect of applied DC potentials on the bioleaching of a chalcopyrite concentrate in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is discussed. Copper dissolution was the highest at an applied potential of +600mV (SCE), while all the dissolved copper got cathodically deposited at a negative potential of -600mV (SCE). Electrobioleaching at an applied potential of +600mV (SCE) was established at different pulp densities as a function of time. Effect of the magnitude of electrolytic currents on the activity and growth of bacterial cells was studied. Preadaptation of bacterial cells to the concentrate slurry and electrolytic growth conditions significantly enhanced copper dissolution. Electrochemical and biochemical mechanisms involved in electrobioleaching are illustrated with respect to oxidative dissolution and bio catalysis of anodic oxidation.

It is well known that the crushing and grinding steps in the mineral processing of ores represent a substantial proportion of total energy, cost and carbon emission in mining. For instance a recent study calculated that 36% of the energy consumed by gold and copper producing mines in Australia was attributable to comminution (Ballantyne et al, 2012). Understanding this component of a business is essential in a world seeking to lower production costs, improve earnings and reduce its carbon footprint. The issue commands the attention and support of industry leaders in the mining sector, government, equipment manufacture, engineering design and research organizations. Furthermore, several researchers have often stated that globally, comminution processes consume between 3-4% of the world?s electrical energy production (Daniel and Lewis-Gray, 2011). In 2009-10, Australia?s Federal Government Energy Efficiency Opportunity (EEO) participants in the mining sector used 336.5 PJ, representing approximately 6 percent of Australia's total energy use. It is evident that the current practices of breaking rocks in tumbling mills are relatively inefficient (Fuerstenau and Abouzeid, 2002). Research and improved engineering design has established that a range of improved blasting, crushing and grinding techniques and flow sheets may lower project costs and carbon footprint. These include relatively simple process flow sheet strategies such as gangue rejection or pre-concentration prior to size reduction, a better combination of grinding technologies (both current and new systems), and selection of coarser grind sizes where ore and waste mineralogy allow. Yet, despite this systematic and detailed research, the industry remains somewhat reluctant to implement these strategies. CEEC (Coalition for Eco-Efficient Comminution) was established in 2011 to support knowledge sharing and change in an area of high-energy consumption for the global mineral industry. CEEC is a not-for-profit industry company, funded by grants from world wide industry companies, whose mission is to accelerate knowledge and technology transfer in the field of energy-efficient comminution. The key benefit to the mining sector arising from CEEC?s activities will be an increase in the rate at which more energy-efficient comminution data sets, processes, and technologies are developed, demonstrated, shared and applied. This will contribute directly to the industry?s target of reducing operating costs and carbon emissions. CEEC International Ltd and JKTech Pty Ltd teamed together to facilitate the inaugural CEEC Workshop, in June 2012. The purpose of the workshop was to produce a roadmap to provide guidelines for how (1) operations can achieve best EEC practice in the short to medium term, in collaboration with vendors, engineering companies and other service providers, and (2) what R&D is needed to achieve paradigm change in EEC in the medium to long term, e.g. 75% reduction in comminution energy in 10 years.

"The environmental effects of the mining and mineral industry include destruction of natural habitats, changes in river regimes and water tables, and other serious ecological impacts. In this century, it is likely that water will become a critical resource, and in most countries the mining industry competes for a share of this resource. The Kyoto Protocol may at first seem only relevant to the coal mining and power industry, however, it should not be forgotten that the mining and mineral industry is a significant consumer of power. Therefore the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol by most developed countries and the introduction of a carbon credit trading scheme will impact on the industry by potentially increased costs in utilities and waste discharges. It is clear therefore that the mining industry faces many challenges in the coming years. The mining industry?s commitment to sustainable development needs to continue to evolve, in order to meet these challenges effectively. With the advent of globalisation of the industry, it is now an opportune time for the industry to gain international agreement on how they want the industry to achieve sustainability in future years; such a progressive approach is necessary, otherwise government will force the industry to change, which may not necessarily be the best outcome for the industry.INTRODUCTIONThe Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 was an opportunity for world leaders to assemble and discuss strategies and initiatives that provide for further industrial growth without adverse effects on the environment. The World Summit on Sustainable Development held last year in Johannesburg, South Africa, was an opportunity to evaluate those initiatives implemented over the past 10 years, and to set a new and sustainable direction for the future. It is clear that industrial and technology development will continue at a rapid pace in order to serve the needs of a growing world population, but it is essential that the course of this development is well planned, well executed, and that it is sustainable. In reality, while government officials and politicians continue to debate policy and international protocols, the environment continues to suffer and the effects of climate change and global-warming become more real each day."
