Procedures are described for the application of risk analysis or probabilistic methods to mining geomechanics. The methods are widely applicable to existing mine design models. Detailed examples are given of plane slope failure and of pillar design based on displacement-discontinuity stress modelling and empirical strength assessment. The modelling techniques assessed are the Latin hypercube sampling method, incorporated in a spreadsheet environment, and the general point estimate method (GPEM), programmed in TurboBasic. An example GPEM program listing is included. Both methods are very convenient to use. Probabilistic acceptance criteria for slope stability after Priest and Brown are examined and alternatives are proposed where output distributions of factor of safety are approximately normal or lognormal and output distributions of safety margin are normal. The reliability index is included as a useful measure of variability with proposed acceptance criteria.

Vapour pressures of sulphur have been measured over the temperature range 340-1039°C by means of boiling-point measurements, an internally heated pressure vessel being employed with argon as the pressure medium. The results are expressed satisfactorily by a four-term pressure-temperature relation. At the cited critical temperature of 1040°C the calculated critical pressure is 204 atm. From the pressure-temperature relation and available thermal data for the vapour, the approximate composition of the saturated vapour in terms of the various molecular species has been derived for the critical point

The second part of the paper, presented at the Midland Institute of Mining, Civil and Mechanical Engineers' general meeting held in Doncaster on 27th May 1916, addresses the post-Carboniferous and pre-Permian movements which brought about the partition of the area and gave to the North Midland district its individuality as a separate coalfield. As earth-movements of several ages subsequent to the Carboniferous have played a part in the formation of this particular coalfield, the aim is to elucidate the effects which belong to the post-Carboniferous and pre-Permian Period and to disentangle them from those of later date. This is done by comparing the geometry of the folded surface of one of the more important horizons in the Coal-Measures with that of the surface of unconformity which divides the Permian from the Carboniferous rocks in South Yorkshire, Derbyshire, and Nottinghamshire

The two best known graphical methods for presenting and comparing comminution data are obtained by linearising the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann and the Rosin-Rammler size distribution equations. It is shown that the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann equation can cause excessive congestion in the 50 per cent oversize range and that, overall, the Rosin-Rammler is a better procedure. Examples are given

Mining operations on the Witwatersrand are conducted for the most part in rocks of highly quartzitic character. They comprise the following types: Conglomerates, grits, and quartzites, to which on the Far East Rand must be added fine-grained quartzitic shales and shales. In addition, vein quartz occurring as small veins, veinlets and fissure fillings, and igneous rocks forming dykes, must be mentioned, although they constitute only a small percentage of the rock broken. The following is an account of the character and mineralogical composition of the various types.

The slow-speed compressor is giving place to the high-speed type, with its greater economy of material and space; and, where very large units are required, the turbo-compressor is supplying the need. In the very large air-supply stations on the Rand, turbocompressor units of a capacity of 20,000 and even 50,000 cubic feet, requiring 4,000 to 13,000 horsepower, are quite a commercial proposition, and have proved a practical success. Air-compressors of this size are, however, very exceptional, and the high-speed reciprocating compressor is quite capable of dealing with the highest outputs so far required in this country and, in the hands of manufacturers experienced in the design of high-speed steam-engines, a very high standard of reliability and efficiency in operation is obtained. The so-called “high-speed” or more correctly quick-revolution type of compressor is now extensively used in mines and collieries; for the air-pressures required for power purposes in mining work, two-stage compression, with an intercooler between stages, is the design usually adopted in best practice. It is not the writer’s intention to describe a variety of high-speed air-compressors but to select as an example of this type of compressor the one with which he is most familiar, and which is probably more largely used than any other, namely, the double-acting two-cylinder two-crank type with automatic light-plate air-valves, and with the working parts lubricated on the forced-lubrication principle. Whilst spontaneous combustion has never been considered a major problem in south Durham, certain collieries in the area have a history of heatings and precautions are essential. Three collieries are affected - Shotton, Vane Tempest and Seaham - and in the case of the last two, there are huge areas of high quality coal to work under conditions where spontaneous combustion is a real hazard. The seam being extracted has an immediate roof in goaf left by the incomplete extraction of a contiguous seam worked before the turn of the century. The presence of residual coal stocks and old roadways and cavities adds to the difficulty of preventing unwanted air movement. The main preventive measures adopted are the construction of airtight gateside packs and the use of sprayed surface coatings in the gate. Sampling systems and sampling points are described and, in particular the field of continuous monitoring from the surface is examined. The resulting possibility of a quantitative as well as qualitative assessment of the preventative measures required is discussed.

A new range of wear-resistant materials is being produced by technology that has been used to develop high performance metal-matrix composites. These include steels and aluminium alloys that can be made as sheet, plate, rod or bar. The incorporation of hard, wear-resistant particles in an alloy matrix is achieved by reactive casting, spray deposition and powder metallurgical techniques. For example, large particles of TiC can be homogeneously distributed in steel during casting and the subsequent product can easily be rolled to plate. Similarly, up to 20% alumina particles and SiC can be injected, respectively, into steel and wear-resistant aluminium alloys by spray deposition. The current state of development of the process is reviewed and indications are given of the projected applications of such materials.

The paper presents the history of the occurrence of spontaneous combustion in the north area, together with the associated problems. These are examined and a description is given of the methods used to combat the danger, including the use of modern scientific instrumentation. Detailed reference is made to the underground trials with pack injection and sealant coatings which were carried out at Seafield Colliery following the formation of a working group to assess the performance, in the same underground conditions, of (1) sandbagging, (2) pack injection, (3) surface coating. Based on these trials, an improved and more economical method of prevention has been established. There is, however, still scope for further improvement in techniques which would take into account the problems of gradient, transport, manpower and cost.

Pall has developed and supplied to several airlines cabin air libers to provide clean air for passengers and crew in flight, while reducing airline operating costs. Most of today's modern commercial passenger aircrafts employ cabin air recirculation as a means of reducing operating costs. With large numbers of passengers being subject to an increasing proportion of recirculated air for hours at a time, the matter of cabin air quality, with particular respect to the health effects on passengers and crew, has to be addressed. Commercial pressure will ensure that the airlines and aircraft manufacturers will not revert back to the total fresh air systems of the 1960s and 1970s. In fact, feasibility studies are already being undertaken to look at increasing the proportion of recirculated air to 80% and above. With the application of specialist nitration technologies. Pall is able to ensure that the requirements for economy are met whilst ensuring that the air is effectively rendered as 'fresh air’ each time it is recirculated.

Fur a secure mineral supply position to be maintained in the Fiuropean Community there must be a supply of qualified people in the minerals industries. The education of the people required to run and develop these industries should be a priority in the community. This means that there should be a strong capability in mining engineering education. The mining engineering professors decided in 1990 to get together in a new Society to discuss the problems. The Society of Mining Professors/Societat der Berg-baukunde was formed at a meeting in Austria in October 1990. It is basically a F.uropean Society with a few member professors from outside Europe to keep the Society conversant with trends elsewhere. The objectives of the Society are to see that the mining universities in Fiurope maintain standards and produce enough mining engineers. The present membership of the Society and the work of developing a database of current courses is described. Working from the knowledge base developed, it will be possible to design a 'European' mining degree course. The problems which will have to be addressed have been identified and are described in detail.The paper finally goes on to discuss the other problems that universities are facing, the economic problems and above all the lack of students applying for mining courses across Europe. The help and active participation of the mining industry, if that industry still wishes to employ mining engineers, is identified as the only possible solution to those problems.

The organisation's mission is to promote research and technological development in processes relevant to the minerals industry by providing expertise, developing and managing jointly funded projects, undertaking commissions and education and establishing and maintaining research and development networks. It was responsible for the administration of the Mining Technology 2000 national programme to reduce production costs per metallic unit by 50% over 5-8 years, which involved 120 projects in all. Technical areas included ore characterisation/delineation and mine planning, rock fragmentation, rock mechanics, maintenance, energy and ventilation, automation and information systems, cut and fill, bulk mining methods, drifting and production-face development. Solid oxide galvanic cells, of the type: Pt,Ni-NiO | Solid electrolyte | O(metal),Cermet,Pt, were used to measure the activity coefficient of oxygen in liquid Cu at 1 100 and 1 300°C and in Pb at 1 100°C. Similar cells were used to study the activity coefficient of oxygen in the whole range of Cu + Pb alloys at 1 100°C and in Pb-rich alloys at 900 and 750°C. The results obtained are discussed in terms of proposed solution models. An equation based on the formation of 'species' of the form M(2)O in solutions of oxygen in binary alloys is shown to fit the experimental data

Wheal Jane, situated between Truro and the Carnmenellis granite, is under development by Consolidated Gold Fields, Ltd., as a tin producer. The main or B lode comprises a complex cassiterite-sulphide ore located in shear zones along the footwall of the lowest of a series of porphyry dykes (elvans) which strike ENE and dip 35° north. Minor mineralisation follows other elvan contacts and sets of later steeply dipping fractures. The localisation and overall geometry of the deposit is explained in terms of the complex structural geology of the Lower Palaeozoic metasediments and the shape and manner of emplacement of the invading Hercynian granite of Cornwall. Variations in the thickness and grade of the orebody, and in the nature of the mineralisation, are shown to be structurally controlled by undulations of the footwall contact of the B elvan.
