This report discusses the U.S. Bureau of Mines research regarding the desensitization and malfunction of cap-sensitive explosives deployed in underground coal mines. Delay blasting in underground coal generates severe shock waves and rifting forces that fracture and heave coal. These dynamic interactions can damage other charges still remaining in the delay pattern. The debilitating impacts precipitate degrees of reduced charge performance ranging from misfires to weak detonations or out-of-sequence firings. Damaged charges react poorly, perform less useful work, and/or generate atypical fumes with higher toxicity.

The U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) recently conducted a series of precision-scale water shock experiments which consisted of the detonation of several 8-gram, 10-gram, and 12-gram spherical explosive charges. The charges were fabricated from NAX 2000 Primasheet explosive and were center-detonated. Commercial tourmaline crystal water shock sensors were used to measure the induced pressure fields in the water. The measured water shock waveforms and related parameters from the precision-scale experiments were in general agreement with data from larger-scale experiments.

A discrete element computer program, DMC (Distinct Motion Code) was developed to simulate blast-induced rock motion. To simplify the complex task of entering material and explosive design parameters as well as bench configuration, a full-featured graphical interface has been developed. DMC is currently executed on both Sun SPARCstation 2 and Sun SPARCstation 10 platforms and routinely used to model bench and crater blasting problems.

Concern over construction vibration-induced cracking has led to development of a new approach to vibration monitoring called autonomous crack measurement (ACM) and illustrated in Figure 1. This paper describes the concept as well as sensor performance in the first test house fitted an ACM system. Response of three cracks in this concrete masonry unit (CMU) house was measured as part of the system verification. ACM employs a single sensor that measures both weather-induced micrometer changes in crack width and those produced by habitation and ground motioninduced vibration. This comparison is displayed in real time via the Internet without human interaction. Graphic display through the Internet provides a new pathway for communication with the public. Such visual comparison of changes in crack width provides a simple alternative to the present system of comparison of measured and allowable vibration time histories. Measurements reported herein show that weatherinduced response of cracks is greater than that caused by presently allowable construction-induced vibration.

Fracture Control Blasting is an alternative to pre- and post-splitting or smooth wall blasting. It was developed at the University of Maryland as an attempt to overcome some of the disadvantages that occur with normal blasting practices. There are two main factors that are unique to fracture control blasting. First, it utilizes a notched or grooved borehole to initiate fractures at desired locations and secondly, it employs a very carefully selected charge so as to provide control over borehole pressure. The maximum borehole pressure must be kept between very definite limits in order to obtain initiation of fractures at locations where they are desired and yet not obtain fractures where they are not desired. When coupled with stem induced fracturing, which was developed for oil and gas well stimulation, it has been found that the charge required for fracture control can be as little as 1/40th that required for normal smooth wall blasting. The paper describes the technique of fracture control blasting and gives results of some of the field testing conducted to date.

A Discrete element computer program named DMC (Distinct Motion Code) has been developed for modeling rock blasting. This program employs explicit time integration and uses spherical or cylindrical elements which are represented as circles in 2-D. DMC calculations have been compared with measurements on bench blasts in the field with relatively good comparison. Structural geology and joint sets have a significant impact on any blast and DMC has not, until now, included these effects. This paper discusses a recently added DMC capability for treating joints and bedding planes in bench blast simulations.

Description of Project: The four photos show a chimney blasting operation in Vienna’s district of Floridsdorf on May 4 2011. The blasting was done with two types of charges. An internal charge provided a force of blast which resulted in 135 single electrical blasting caps initiated detonations on the basic ensured the straight collapse of the chimney. The preparation work was done by reserve force military engineers. The series of photos were shot by Elisabeth Zechmeister. She works in the Austrian DOD but not as a professional photographer; much more she did all activities in her spare time.

Comparison tests were performed on 6 emulsion concentrates, 3 microballoon sensitized emulsion concentrates, and 2 water gel concentrates from 8 different sources with ANFO used as a control standard. Variables measured include density, detonation, velocity, detonation pressure, calculated borehole pressure, viscosity, and lead cylinder deformation for blends of 15%, 30%, and 45% concentrate and AN/ANFO blends. Comparative results are presented for detonation velocity vs. deformation, and percentage of inherent air vs. deformation for these blends. It was hoped that these tests would serve as a tool to facilitate the comparison of different manufacturer's concentrates in AN/ANFO blends for equivalent performance characteristics and to help evaluate these products on an equal basis for bid solicitation purposes.

President George Bush signed the Safe Explosives Act (SEA), which amended the Organized Crime Control Act (OCCA) of 1970, into Law on November 24, 2002. As a result of this legislation, new restrictions on who could legally receive or possess explosives in the United States went into effect, resulting in a profound impact on the commercial explosives industry. The law went into effect in two key phases. The first phase, which went into effect on January 24, 2003, resulted in additions to the categories of persons who are prohibited from receiving or possessing explosive materials in the U.S.

This paper will discuss the recent and on-going drill and blast optimization measures at the Sparkhule Limestone Quarry, which have resulted in a 44% reduction of drill and blast unit costs per ton of broken limestone. This amounts to approximately $240,000 of drill and blast saving per year at current annual production rates of about 2.5 million tons (2.3 million tonnes) total material shot. The reduction of drill and blast costs were accomplished by a detailed and controlled in-the-mine drill/blast experimentation and cost evaluation using 8 different blast pattern designs and shots totaling approximately 267,000 tons (242,200 tonnes) of shot and mucked material. A careful review of the geology of the deposit was performed to determine the different rock classification/strengths/structural properties and to adjust blast designs to optimize fragmentation for the different rock types. Equipment loading productivity and crusher throughput performance were monitored as part of the evaluation process to assure that an optimal fragmentation of broken rock was achieved with the new blast designs. The study included the review of bulk explosive and accessory selection criteria (ammonia nitrate/fuel oil mix - ANFO, mini prills (high density ANFO), sensitized and un-sensitized emulsions at a 30% emulsion/70% ANFO blend), blast pattern design, charge diameter and the cost of drilling. Laser profiling technology was used to assure proper bench heights, stemming and sub-drill footage and front row burdens. High speed photography, video and still photos were taken of the different designed shots to assist in the evaluation of the performance of each blast. Powder density checks, size distribution, back break, detonation velocity and pressure measurements were taken. Different borehole diameters were used for the drill optimization study and drilling cost and productivities determined. A detailed cost comparison between in-house blasting and complete shot service was prepared to evaluate if shot service is a cost effective alternative to current in-house loading and blasting including a review of the new and pending United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Fire Arms (ATF) regulations and associated owner costs/risks and potential benefit of shot service.

This paper explains the methodology for assessing the efficiency of rockmass fragmentation by explosive blasting, from ground vibration frequency spectrum analysis of the blast event. Explosives are used in the mining, quarrying and construction industries for fragmenting rockmass to a suitable size. When an explosive charge is detonated, in addition to fragmenting the rockmass, it will also generate ground vibration and air vibrations. Efficiency of a blast depend upon percentage of blast energy wasted in generating ground vibrations and air vibrations.

The new Cyprus Northshore Mining Co. has taken the previous blasting methods of Reserve Mining Co.'s mine in northern Minnesota and adapted them to a new competative Iron Ore Industry. Cyprus was challenged to develop new blasting methods to reduce costs and improve results over the previous mining operation. Many of the older procedures have been kept, but others have been changed in ways that bring the mine operation up to state of the art technology. In addition, unique ideas not previously tried in the North American Iron Ore Industry have been instituted. So far, this has reduced Cyprus's blasting costs by 70 percent.

The emulsion explosives show non- ideal detonation behavior, and its detonation velocity can be controled by selecting the size and adjusting the quantity of voids involved. To establish the technology to control the detonation characteristics of the emulsion explosives, some experiments have been carried out using resin balloons of five different sizes ranged from O.OSmm to 2.42mm in the average diameter. Detonation velocities of the emulsion explosives containing resin balloons of different size and quantity were determined for the charge diameter of 20-50mm. The detonation velocity at infinite charge diameter was compared with calculated ideal detonation velocity. The emulsion explosives containing large (0.5mm or larger) balloons showed big discrepancy between the measured and calculated detonation velocities, and the fraction of ammonium nitrate reacted in the reaction zone was estimated to be significantly low. It was shown that the reaction zone length was proportional to the size of voids involved. The critical charge diameter was determined for the emulsion explosives containing different resin balloons at the various explosive densities. It is large for the emulsion explosives containing large voids, and it was shown that the critical diameter is proportional to the distance between the void surfaces, not to the void spacing, the distance between the centers of the voids. The reaction rate of the bulk emulsion matrix seems to be the major factor that affects the critical diameter than the specific surface of voids. Good relationship between the critical diameter and the reaction zone length was observed.

This paper discusses development, test data, field trials, performance, application and possible economics of high-energy blasting agents fueled with Nitropropane that can be bulk loaded into downholes or packed into waterproof packages at densities between 1.10 and 1.25 gm/cc and that yield calculated detonation pressures of 50 kilobars in small diameters to 100 kilobars in diameters over six inches. Using high-density nitrate, downhole densities of over 1.4 have been attained in field trials with correspondingly high calculated detonation pressures.

The Minister of Fisheries and Oceans for Canada is responsible, under the Fisheries Act, for the protection of all marine organisms and their habitats. The detonation of explosives in or adjacent to fish habitat has been demonstrated to cause disturbance, injury and/or death to aquatic organisms, and/or disturbance, destruction or alteration of their habitats. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans recognizes that the use of explosives may be the most practical or cost effective method by which to complete a project and has undertaken the development of a set of guidelines that will prevent or minimize the destruction of or disturbance to aquatic organisms and their habitats while at the same time allowing scientific and industrial users of explosives to proceed with their projects.

When CIL presented their new theory of the Breakage Process and Delay Blasting at the 74th Annual Meeting of the CIM in 1972(1), there was hardly any open pit operation in Canada that was using longer than 25 msec. delays. To the contrary, 10 and 15 msec. surface relays were common, which in our opinion were no delays at all for open pit blasting.

The productivity of a loading machine is affected by several factors. One of the most significant is the characteristic of the muck being loaded. A study was conducted to examine the effects of the looseness, angle of repose, size distribution and moisture content of the blasted material on the efficiency of the loading machine. The study was conducted in the following stages: (a) controlled experiments in the lab, (b) tests with loader simulator and (c) field work in an operating mine. It was found that looseness (%void) in the muck increases with the increase in the value of the mean particle size and index of uniformity of the fragmented rock. Looseness and angle of repose affect the fill factor and the digging cycle time of a loader and in turn the productivity of the equipment. Moisture content affects the angle of repose as well as the stickiness of the material to the loader’s bucket. It was observed that the angle of repose increased with the increase in the mean particle size and the moisture content of the muck. It was also found that the bucket full factor and rate of scooping decrease with the increase in the values of mean particle size and index of uniformity. This was also conformed during fieldwork that bucket fill factor decreases with the increase in the mean particle size as well as the index of uniformity.

Reactive ground is ground that undergoes a spontaneous exothermic reaction after it comes into contact with nitrates. This is commonly caused by inert rock hosting sulphide minerals, such as pyrites that act as the reagent. The presence and subsequent rate of reaction with nitrate based bulk explosives can be difficult to predict. Once identified, only explosives that are tested and proven to be compatible with the reactive ground may only be used. These typically take the form of inhibited ammonium nitrate emulsion blended with a limited volume of ANFO or porous prilled ammonium nitrate (PPAN) to ensure that all AN prills in the blend are wholly encapsulated and thus protected from the reactive ground. The requirement for high emulsion content bulk products limits the suite of products available for use to high energy, and high expense products. Further, if chemically sensitised products are used, charged holes must be left unstemmed to allow for gassing to occur, adding delay and exposing the blast crew to an unconfined charge in reactive ground. A range of inhibited products has been developed that are solid sensitised and can be bulked to as low as 0.9 g/cc (56.2 lb/ft3). The use of a solid sensitiser enables stemming to occur immediately after each hole is charged, confining any unplanned detonation more safely within the rock mass. The effective and precise manufacture of bulked inhibited products required a new and innovative Mobile Processing Unit (MPU) design. This MPU required the ability to blend two solid raw materials (AN prill & sensitiser) along with two liquid ingredients (AN emulsion and process fuel). This MPU has been designed, manufactured and has used successfully to manufacture low density inhibited explosives. This paper presents an innovative shift in inhibited bulk products with specific reference to their manufacture and application.
