By recording the arrival time of a pipe wall at evenly spaced intervals in a plane perpendicular to the pipe axis, application of the equations of motion permits calculation of the pressure of the explosive acting to accelerate the pipe wall. Data observed from various non-ideal explosives are presented, together with values of pressure to be expected from thermodynamic calculations.

The results of an extensive literature review and field experiments regarding the effects detonation of high energy explosive have upon various aquatic organisms are reported. These results were used to modify regulatory permitting criteria in Texas. Three separate field experiments were conducted. In the first study, surface placed charges were used in a marine habitat. In the other two, the charges were placed in drilled holes. In one, which was in a freshwater environment, the drilled holes were filled with drilling mud after placement of the charges. In the second, which was in an estuarine environment the holes were allowed to sit for thirty days prior to detonation to permit natural back-filling to occur by water transported sediments. A variety of aquatic organisms held in wire cages were exposed to detonations. Immediate and long-term effects of the exposure were determined based on external and internal visual observations. Damage to aquatic organisms was found to be reduced by placing the explosives in drilled holes and back-filling the holes prior to detonation of the explosives.

"Recently, an effort was made to calibrate the Riedel-Hiermaier-Thoma (RHT) material model to reproducethe behavior of granite under impact and explosive loading conditions. The study concluded that the materialmodel captured the phenomenon of compressional damage in granite due to such loading conditionsfairly well. The present work uses hydrodynamic modeling with the calibrated RHT model to estimate thefines generated around a blasthole. This can improve the calibration of different size-distribution empiricalmodels and enhance the prediction of fines."

The Blasting In the summer of 1999, a Southern California drilling and blasting company conducted blasting as part of the grading operations at the Highlands Ranch development in San Diego, California. Highlands Ranch was a new single family residential project located near older residential properties in the area. Blasting was necessary to remove indigenous meta-volcanic rock associated with the local geology.

The annual consumption of electric blasting caps in the United States approaches 100,000,000, so, over the last eleven to twelve years about one billion have been used. The author has made hazard assessment measurements in connection with proposed electric blasting operations in many places: under a giant, operating electrical generating station, under some of the highest voltage power lines in the country, and around many large electrical distribution substations. Electric blasting was safely conducted in all instances. Measurements of stray current, and of pickup under high voltage power lines are easily made, but it was always a more complex chore to make a good radio frequency hazard assessment "close in" to a high power RF transmitting source.

Invariably, these raisesor boreholes will hangup and stop the flow of ore. On August 3, 1977 the 95th Congress passed Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. This Act created the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM), which was given the responsibility of formulating regulations to implement the Act. This paper explains the rationale behind the specific provisions of the final blasting regulations, which were published in volume 44, No. 50 of the Federal Register, dated March 13, 1979. The major items covered by the regulations include preblasting surveys, blasting schedules, protection of the public, ground vibration limits, the scaled distance equation, airblast limits, blasting procedures, and record keeping. The regulations are designed to protect the safety and well-being of the public and to protect buildings and structures such as wells, pipelines, and storage facilities from damage.

Numerous large diameter water wells are used to dewater the pit at the Sleeper Mine. Occasionally, a well will be located inside the boundaries of a blast. Although one might expect that wells so located would become inoperable due to blast-induced damage, in most instances this has not proven to be the case.

With the ever increasing public sensitivity to our environment, the blasting industry can no longer be concerned with just drilling and blasting. Government regulations, augmented by public pressure, require that the industry must be more diligent in preventing spills, disposing of distressed products and packaging materials, controlling fumes and dust, preventing product contamination, developing environmental impact studies, and preventing unnecessary regulations. These liabilities in conjunction with those of vibration, air overpressure and flyrock will continue to greatly impact the industry.

Misfires in underground and surface production blasts can be costly. Costs can arise from loss of resource, production interruptions, having to redrill or otherwise refire the blast (a hazardous process at best), due to added secondary blasting or breakage, and/or from increased LHD maintenance costs attributable to poor fragmentation.
