A preconstruction inventory program was conducted to determine the existing conditions of residential, non-residential and all other structures within 2,000 feet of the blasting limits for a highway excavation site in Asheville, North Carolina. Prior to major production blasting, eleven test blasts were detonated to establish site specific propagation parameters in order to develop contours of maximum allowable explosive charge weights per delay. The method of scaling distance by the square root of charge weight per delay was utilized in developing the contours of allowable charge weights. The charge weight contours were revised during blasting operations as additional vibration data became available. The effects of blast induced vibrations on a nearby water storage reservoir, a nearby vehicular tunnel and other adjacent residential and non-residential structures were observed and monitored over a period of two years of blasting operations.

The purpose of the Solid Medium Controlled Blasting Technique and Its Applications is to have the inside of the vessel-shaped framework (e.g: oil tank , water pool, gas chamber, chimney, water tower, grain warehouse and etc.) or the one side of the thin wall-shaped structure(e.g: steel bar concrete wall and etc.), both of which are intended to be demolished, inserted with the required solid medium (e.g: soil , sand , coal, salt and etc.) ,in which there is a certain mass density, and then through which the blasting energy is transferred to fulfill the blasting task. For such a technique, it is necessary to bury the explosives into the inserted solid medium and then to start the explosion to blast the intended target into pieces. The filling of the solid medium may be done mechanically or by man. Compared with the water pressure blasting technique, this one has the characteristics of good effect. wide application, simplified construction procedure , safe and reliable operation and small vibration (less vibration than water pressure blasting by 80% to 90%)in particular without any flying stones, thus resulting in better and comprehensive social and economickfficiency.

Stanstead granite has been investigated with respect to its dynamic compressive strength and its strain-rate dependency. A standard Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) apparatus has been employed to generate strain rates of up to ~500/s through high-velocity impact. The diameters of the test samples were 19 mm, and tested under impact velocities up to ~20m/s. It is found that even within this limited range of strain rates, the dynamic compressive strength for the granite showed nearly a 100% increase in value compared to those obtained under static loading conditions (e.g. compressive strength of 394 MPa at a strain-rate of 600/s, compared to 215 MPa obtained under static loading). The details of the test are described in terms of incident, reflected and transmitted stress pulses, along with means to achieve stress equilibrium in the test samples under dynamic loading conditions. The advantage and drawback of the use of ‘pulse shaping’ techniques to achieve dynamic stress equilibrium are also detailed.

A carefully designed and controlled in-place destruction experiment was performed on a concrete bunker buried in 4.27 m (14 ft.) of soil. The objective was to determine if the explosive charges would collapse the structure in-place without requiring mechanical excavation. Collapse of the buried structure was fi rst attempted by drilling holes in the soil and placing four 13.38 Kg (29.5 lb) Comp B explosive charges at a depth of 2.13 m (6.7 ft.). The confi guration of the charges when detonated was 2.13 m (6.7 ft.) off the top of the concrete roof and 3.66 m (12 ft.) apart in a square pattern. Detonation of these charges created a crater ~4.88 m (16 ft.) in diameter and 2.13 m (6.7 ft.) deep, leaving ~2.13 m (6.7 ft.) of soil covering. Very limited spalling occurred on the ceiling of the concrete structure as a result of detonating these four charges. The second attempt to collapse the structure consisted of placing another single 13.38 Kg (29.5 lb) charge, identical to the fi rst four, near the geometrical center of the bunker roof. This charge was detonated in the soil cover 100 to 200 mm (4 to 8 in.) above the reinforced concrete roof, collapsing it. Due to the collapsed roof and remaining soil cover, the structure had been collapsed in place, requiring no further demolition. A computer simulation of the above explosive destruction scenario was completed using the computer hydrocode AUTODYN with a granular material model to treat the soil and the RHT brittle material model to represent the concrete. AUTODYN accurately recreated the scenario including the slightly damaged response of the concrete structure to the initial four charges and the collapse of the structure resulting from the second single charge close to the roof.

Homestake Mining Company's Open Cut Mine is located in Lead, South Dakota, in the northern Black Hills. The mine is within 300 feet of occupied residences on the south end, and within 1200 feet on the north end. Mining began at the north end of the open pit in October, 1983, and blasting related complaints began almost immediately. Noise and ground movement comprised the majority of the structural damage claims. As a result of these complaints, Homestake purchased a recording seismograph and began monitoring nearly every blast. In addition, the company hired a consultant to review Homestake's blasting and monitoring practices. He was also asked to do a single, one-time study of the cracks in six homes. This initial work led to Homestake monitoring all blasts with three seismographs and having South Dakota School of Mines and Technology do a year-long study of crack development and propagation in five homes in Lead.

In this paper,powder emulsion explosives,which have high sensitivity and strong detonation force,have been studied by applying emulsion technology to the production of the present powder ones.Under the condition of #8 industrial detonator initiation,the distance of air gap propagation is 110~180mm,brisance !3.5mm, lead block test value 325ml and detonation velocity 3000~4000m/s for small diameter (35mm) explosive cartridges.In addition to these,the factors effect on are investigated by experimental study and theoretical analysis.

Increasing public awareness is probably the single most important challenge faced by any blasting contractor today. This increased awareness usually results in an outcry for tighter regulations and restrictions on those in the blasting industry. Those affected do not often understand the dynamics of blasting and are simply fearful of the unknown. This reaction very often results in more regulations and restrictions which frequently fail to address the real problems.

The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 requires that blasting be conducted so as to prevent injury to people and damage to public or private property. The three adverse effects are flyrock, ground vibrations and airblast. Blasting close to people frequently results in complaints of annoyance or damage. Federal and State personnel are responsible for evaluating the validity of the complaint. The elements to be evaluated include: reviewing blast logs, inspecting the mine, inspecting the house, measuring ground, air and structure vibrations, and predicting vibration levels. Computer spreadsheets, with their graphical capabilities, will be used to show how data can be cross tabulated to verify data accuracy. Complete statistical analyses of vibrations require more powerful software to make vibration predictions. Once all available data are gathered and verified, a decision on the complaint can be made.

The common approach of designing blasts on a trial and error basis is quickly coming to an end. When utilizing the full scale blast environment, trial and error can quickly become cost prohibitive and leaves much to be desired in terms of true blast diagnostics. In these situations testing is usually only continued until a perceived improvement is achieved and when the gross undesirables in blast results are removed. This does does not preclude, however, that further improvements of up to 100% or more can not be obtained.

Research has shown that information technology alone will not provide companies with a sustainable competitive advantage. However, where information technology is used to assist the development and enhance the performance, of the employee sustainable competitive advantage can occur. A Performance Support System is a tool that combines explosive's theory, government regulations, and site specific knowledge in an easily accessible computer program. In this paper five areas are addressed where a Performance Support System can assist the user: as a reference source, in an assistant or advisory role, as a instruction aid, in regulatory compliance, and as an operations monitor.

ISEE student chapters have great potential to increase student involvement and national membership, and can benefit from formalized strategies to help them do so. Several key strategies are introduced and should be employed to promote organizational participation throughout the university system.

Landfills containing house hold waste produces methane gas during its decomposition. This gas can be recovered and used for heating purposes or as fuel for vehicles. Gas drainage pipes are installed in the landfill and connected to a central suction point. Methane gas is produced over several years until the slots in the drainage pipes are clogged by black mud. And the bottom of the vertical drainage pipe are filled with mud and water. The hypothesis tested in this paper is if blasting in the drainage pipes could activate the production and flow of methane. In the first part of the paper we have studied what maximum linear charge concentration could be used in different size of PE-pipes place vertical on surface and surrounded by air. The results show that the maximum linear charge concentration for single blasts varied between 5-10 g/m, depending on the diameter of the pipe (90, 100 and 160 mm). Maximum charge concentration for the repeated blast varied between 2-5 g/m. In the second part of the paper we study what maximum linear charge concentration could be used in situ for full scale blasting tests in a special prepared test area which later on was dug out after the blastings. Up to 40 g/m could be used without damaging the top of the 160 mm diameter pipes. The increase in methane flow was so low so it could not be measured c4.5 m3/h. The conclusion therefore is that the stimulation of methane flow by explosives is not enough.

Any organization that subjects its activities to a continuous improvement methodology, aiming to optimize their processes and services, must be able to adequately measure the results of the implemented changes to pursue better outcomes. This is no different for mining companies. When it comes to blasting, an accurate fragmentation analysis can correlate blast design and rock mass parameters to particle size distribution, enabling us to further analyze the correspondence of specific design patterns, applied to specific rock mass properties and the result in measured fragmentation indicators. Over time, many tools were developed for us to obtain PSD data, albeit each of them had their own shortcomings. The first ones to be developed involved photographing the muck pile including a scale object, uploading those photos to a PC, and using specialized software to analyze each one. As a result, analysts would get a PSD curve that served as reference for the performance of the blast. This method, which is still used, has major shortcomings. The most obvious one is that it is only able to capture a slice of the blast, which corresponds to the exposed section of the muck pile the analyst has access to, and even there its reach is limited to the areas that are safe for getting close enough for placing the scale, which are not many. Consequently, this is a very limited way to get a fragmentation performance assess for a blast. Currently, autonomous systems are capable of taking continuous pictures of the muck pile. Installed on a shovel, conveyor belt or crusher feed, these systems can take a continuous stream of pictures that are later analyzed automatically without the need of human intervention. These systems greatly increase the volume of data and, consequently, we have a PSD curve that is more representative of the blast performance. However, this technology still had issues when trying to sample front end loaders mining operations or getting results from underground blasting due to the inherent difficulties of these operations. New algorithms used for capturing and processing data for front end loaders can overcome the harsh environment of their operations and produce PSD data in high vibration environments and difficult mining angles. For underground mining, algorithms can be used to sample each truck exiting the mine, giving a reliable source of fragmentation analysis that can be traced back to their stope of origin. The development of this technology extends the existing system’s capabilities and helps us in our efforts to improve fragmentation results with each blast.

In 1933 the Cobre Mining Company re-opened the 32-year-old UV Industry Mine, which is located in a scenic canyon near Silver City, New Mexico. The site location is shown in Figure 1. Current mineral extractions are copper and magnetite; both extractions similar to those mined many years ago. Copper is extracted from chalcopyrite imbedded in the host rock of massive limestone deposits and magnetite, an iron ore, is a by-product of the same extraction process.

This project will report findings on the establishment of a new surface test site at the Colorado School of Mines Edgar Mine. Concerns over the blast effects on site neighbors prompted the study to be conducted. The current maximum charge weight of 20-lb was studied to ensure that all environmental effects were within the range prescribed by state and federal regulations. Geophone locations were surveyed using GPS and monitored using Instantel Minimate Plus instruments. Distances and orientation of measurement sites to the test site were varied according to the local geography and geology. Weather conditions were also observed and recorded during all tests. Neighbor complaints were recorded and taken into account during analysis. Current results show that the current charge limit results in a safety factor of over 200 for all blasting activities at the site. Data collection is ongoing and a review is to be conducted annually. Programmable delay time with increments of 1 ms up to 10s is possible with excellent timing accuracy. Bus length of up to 2 km containing 1600 EIMs can be employed. A key feature of the SDI Electronic Blasting System has been its high tolerance towards current leakage in the bus line.

Proper risk assessment and blast design are very desirable to the execution of a blast. Not only will this ensure that it achieves its desired outcome, but the probability of complaints and litigation will be reduced. Blasting engineers rely heavily on site-specific data for analysis and input to the blast design equations, and therefore data collection is critical to this process. The traditional approach to data collection is to carry out site-specific reconnaissance by visiting the site, but the time spent doing so can be reduced if a remote sensing approached is adopted.

The surface vibration field in the area above an underground mine prior to its development has been investigated, in order to assess the vibration levels expected in existing buildings and in the planned mine facilities from future underground blasts. Shots of 50 and 100 kg of explosive placed in drillholes at depths of 100 to 150 m were fired, and the vibration events were recorded using an array of 40 seismographs in a 400 m square grid, covering a 2×2 km area. Contours of isovelocity were obtained for each shot, showing some directional transmission patterns. Propagation laws were obtained from the results of each shot and also from the bulk of data, both for the whole area and dividing it into four quadrants. The shift of dominant frequency with distance was also analyzed.

"Geology plays a critical role in many aspects of blasting, from fragmentation to wall control. One often overlooked component of blasting concerns blast results due to the effect of geologic features. The direction of blasting, with respect to strike and dip, can produce varied results, depending on thescenario. Working with geological features, as opposed to against them or without regard to them, can therefore dramatically improve blasting results. This paper focuses on the role of “geologic features”, which include joint-sets, natural fractures, and bedding planes (all of which are commonly referred to as “seams”) for the purposes of this paper. The goal of this paper is to promote understanding and mitigation techniques for various scenarios in which there are identifiable geologic features. Depending on the nature of these features (strike and dip specifically), blast design and pit advancement/development can be carefully considered to use make the best use of these features and optimize blast results."
