The low-grade deposits of manganese ores along the Missouri River near Chamberlain, S. Dak., are known to contain one of the largest reserves of manganese in the United States. Manganese occurs as concretionary nodules ranging in size from 13 inches in their longest dimension to particles finer than 65-mesh. The nodules are embedded in soft, wet shale, which contains little manganese. The removal of nodules from the low-grade shale is a simple mechanical problem; the question is primarily to determine the lowest-cost method of separation. This report purposes to present data acquired by experimenting with samples of the ore, which form a basis for suggesting methods of concentrating manganese nodules.

This report describes operations at the Rosiclare Fluorspar Works of the Aluminum Co. of America at Rosiclare, Hardin County, Ill. The works include the Fairview mine, the fluorspar mill, and related facilities. The publication covers exploration, development, mining and milling practices, mine-drainage problems, and other activities and is presented as part of the Bureau of Mines series of publications on mining and milling practices in various parts of the United States. The Rosiclare fluorspar area, for its size, has been the largest producer of high-grade fluorspar in the United States and probably in the world. The vein system in this area is over 5 miles long and 1/2 mile wide, and ore has been found as deep as 900 ft.

On July 1, 1969, the Explosives Research Center merged with the Health and Safety Research and Testing Center to form the Safety Research Center, with facilities at Pittsburgh and Bruceton, Pa. Subsequently, passage in December of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (Public Law 91-173) had a major influence on the activities of the new center. These activities were conducted under two main programs, Coal Mine Safety Research and Explosives Research. The Coal Mine Safety Research program was concerned primarily with two categories of hazards: health-related hazards associated with the mine environment, due to such factors as respirable dust, toxic gases and vapors, and excessive noise; and accidents due to mine fires, explosions, and roof falls.

Surveys to establish the quantity and quality of coals available for metallurgical, industrial, and energy use, investigations to develop better mining methods, and studies aimed at improving the health and safety of those who mine the coal highlighted Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal in 1968. Also being developed are more efficient methods of coal preparation, transportation, storage, and utilization. Supplementing this effort are projects designed to assure minimum disturbance of land, water, and air resources. Research centers and laboratories of the Bureau of Mines are listed in appendix A. Publications released during 1968 are cited with the various projects and in appendix C. Organizations that cooperated in the work in various ways are cited in appendix B.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a trenching and sampling project during 1947 on the tungsten-rich granodiorite that outcrops in Henderson Gulch, Montana. During the course of this investigation, interest was attracted to the Sunrise copper-gold mine in metamorphosed limestone in the north slope of the gulch. The mine was examined by S. H. Lorain, Chief, Mining Division, Albany Branch, in May 1948. A trenching and drilling program was recommended to develop a parallel vein indicated by outcrops to lie below the principal productive Queen vein. In the meantime, the Queen Mining Syndicate initiated a trenching program that exposed high-grade lead-copper-silver-gold ore in a nearly vertical vein that strikes N. 600 E. to east. A core-drilling program to develop this vein was initiated in September 1948. This report presents the factual data obtained from the trenching and drilling operations. The Sunrise mine was discovered about 1890. Production has been estimated to be $120,000 in gold from 40,000 tons of ore mined during the period 1892-1903. The tailing from this operation was treated by cyanidation in 1912, with a reported recovery of $3.50 to $4.00 a ton from 15,000 tons of material. Subsequent production of sulfide ore was 7,396 tons treated by smelting, with recovery of 1,569.42 ounces of gold, 10,003 ounces of silver, 352,899 pounds of copper, and 354 pounds of lead.

This report summarizes the activities performed and the results achieved during a two-phased investigation of the technical and economic feasibility of disposing of coal mine refuse underground in active mines, Three coal regions in the United States that are most severely affected by coal refuse disposal problems are identified: southwestern Pennsylvania, southern West Virginia, southwestern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky. For each region, a conceptual mine model is presented that describes the geologic conditions, mining methods, and environmental circumstances typical of that region. The model mine that was prepared for the Kanawha Region in Southwestern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky was selected as the basis for developing alternative conceptual designs of underground disposal systems in the second phase of this investigation. Procedures used in selecting the regions and in modeling typical mines are described in Part I of the report. Part II of the report describes existing methods for stowing refuse underground, presents three alternative conceptual designs of stowing system that would be appropriate for the model mine postulated in the first phase of the study, discusses technical characteristics and environmental effects relative to the various systems, and evaluates the technical and economic feasibility of the three alternative disposal system designs. Comparisons costs among systems and with costs or surface disposal are presented.

This manual provides instructions for installing, operating, and maintaining a protective canopy on the Joy Mfg. Co. shuttle car. These instructions are based upon actual installations made in the mine on two shuttle cars, model 21SC-2E. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopy are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other shuttle cars with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions hexein would he applicable to the other shuttle cars and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the complete ternary system K2 HfF6¬K2ZrF6-l.25 weight-percent HF at 40° C. In addition, solubility curves have been established at 25°, 30°, 500, 60°, and 70° C. These solubility data implemented a study of hafnium enrichment in feed solutions for liquid-liquid extraction processes.. Selected K2HfF6-K2 ZrF6-1.25 weight-percent HF mixtures were equilibrated in a constant temperature bath. Compositions of the equilibrated solutions and wet residues were established from combined hafnium and zirconium oxide and total fluorine analyses. All solubility curves were essentially parallel on triangular coordinates. At 40° C, the solid phase of the K2HfF6-K2ZrF6-1.25 percent HF system is a series of solid solution hydrates with K2HfF6-H20 and K2ZrF6.3H2O segments existing at the respective extremes. Since this system contains K2HfF6-H20 and K2ZrF6.3H20 segments, it is not ideal for simple separation of high-purity K2HfF6 from K2HfF6-K2ZrF6 mixtures by recrystallization. However, it would be useful for producing hafnium-enriched feed solutions from zircon concentrates for liquid-liquid extraction of hafnium from zirconium.

In the summer of 1937 the authors began a series of time studies of the various processes employed in' the production of crashed stone. These studies, made at quarries situated in the eastern and southeastern parts of the United States, have not been completed, but to make results available to the industry as early as possible, it was decided to publish summarizes of the studies made to January 1, 1939, as a series of progress reports. The first of these dealt with power-shovel loading and was issued as Report of Investigations 3461 in September 1939. The second, issued in September 1939 as Report of Investigations 3467, dealt with quarry haulage. The present report discusses analyses of time studies of primary drilling a t the same group of quarries. OBJECT OF STUDY Pressure of business problems frequently requires the entire attention of quarry management, and in consequence internal plant economies often are neglected. Also, operating officials absorbed in their local problems are prone to overlook possible economies that would attract attention immediately were they critically examining another plant. The authors felt that technical studies at a number of plants, made by impartial engineers, might disclose opportunities to reduce costs or improve efficiency in internal plant processes.

Of the about 60 million pounds of aluminum used in the Pacific Northwest in 1960, 40 million pounds or two-thirds was used by 10 companies. One of these companies made airplanes and missiles; one manufactured roofing, siding, and tubing; three produced truck tractors, truck bodies, or truck trailers; two made architectural metal products; one made irrigation and industrial products; one was a general foundry; and one was a shipyard. These companies contributed to regional growth by developing markets outside the area; some have worldwide sales. Aluminum consumption increased at an average rate of 7 percent annually from 1954 to 1960. Airplane manufacture, formerly preeminent in aluminum use, no longer was in first place in 1960. By industrial group, the leading users were manufacturers of building products, 30 percent; airplanes and missiles, 22 percent; truck tractors, truck bodies, and truck trailers; 17 percent; general foundries, 5 percent; ships and boats, 4 percent; mobile homes, 4 percent; other transportation equipment, 3 percent; and irrigation equipment and all other products, 15 percent.

A ventilated helical boost pump was developed that can handle varying flow rates and/or solids concentrations while operating at a single rotational speed and without computer assisted feedback controls. The boost pump developed and briefly tested during this program was designed to accomodate flows suitable for a 3-in. diameter pipeline. The boost pump's ventilated design provides the automatic pressure regulation needed to meet the system's requirements for supporting transient pipeline flow.

"INTRODUCTION This paper is the seventh of a series of yearly reviews started in 1921 and pre¬sents information gathered in a cooperative investigation undertaken by the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Utah. It is the purpose of this report to make available flotation—reagent consumption data and other milling information in such a manner as to be of value to the milling industry and to the manufacturer of flotation reagents.These data have been compiled from a survey of about 300 concentration plants in the United States. Much additional information has been obtained from the various offices of the United States Bureau of Mines. Many of the plants covered in the survey made complete reports of their operations, but others were apparently unable to supply this information in sufficient detail to meet the requirements of this report. As a result, some sections of the report are more complete than others. In general, however, the mill reports were much more complete than in previous years, and for the first time it has been possible to calculate average mill recoveries in the treatment of certain classes of ores. As in the past, every effort has been made to conceal individual plant operations.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIt is realized that the publication of this information is possible only through the assistance of the mill operators, and the authors wish to express their appreciation of this cooperation. In gasifying pulverized coal with steam and oxygen, the particle size of the coal fed to a gasifier should be as small as economically possible. A potential way to achieve this advantage is to reduce the particle size of the coal by passing the coal-steam mixture at high velocity through a heated tube coil before the mixture enters the gasifier. To evaluate this method the Federal Bureau of Mines flashed coal-water slurries in externally heated metallic tube coils to determine the extent of size reduction. The first of two different laboratory-scale apparatus reduced the average particle diameter of subbituminous C coal from 190 to 110 microns at an outlet velocity of 330 feet per second (f.p.s.). At the same outlet velocity, a second apparatus reduced the average particle diameter from 250 to 140 microns. An increase in velocity produced more finely divided coal, but variation in temperature and pressure had no effect except as they affected velocity. Virtually the same size reduction was noted for five ranks of coal at equal velocities. The rate of increase in particle-size reduction with increase in velocity decreased with a decrease in particle size. The pulverizing mechanism was concluded to be abrasion of the particles with each other and with the tube wall.

A methodology has been developed for qualitative safety hazard evaluation and quantitative reliability analysis of mine monitoring and control systems. Detailed application of these techniques were made to two commercial monitor/control systems and to a West Virginia University distributed microprocessor-based system. A controlled environmental test was conducted on a set of one of the commercial system's outstations. A software reliability evaluation methodology was also developed and applied.

Bureau of Mines studies of mine roof fall problem in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed of southern West Virgania and southwestern Virginia have established that type and sequence of rock are significant factors in roof competence. The poorest conditions occur where the immediate roof consists of slump structures and slickensided rock. The best conditions occur where the roof consists of a sequence that coarsens upward from shale to massive sandy shale. A small manual of color photographs of rock types was devised to aid in identifying drill cores. Proper identifications should enhance the prediction of areas of potential roof problems in advance of mining.

The purpose of this research was to develop a computer simulator fur predicting the air quality in existing coal mines as well as a design aid for developing new mines. In addition to the air quantity flow, the other variables of tempera Lure, moisture, methane and respirable dust are necessary to determine the air quality. An additional feature of this simulator is that it allows parametric studies of these variables to explore the effect that these variables have on the air quality of an operating mine system. The research has also pointed out arias where more research is needed, and promote better and more systematic data taking techniques. Wang and Hartman (see Reference 9, on page 1-98 of Section 1) had already published a computer program to determine the ventilation of large mines, and Wang and Saperstein (see Reference 10 on page 1-98 of Section 1) later published a refinement of the work in the previous reference. These references were the starting point of the simulator developed by this present research effort, and Section 1 of this report is a slightly modified version of the original vent elation program. Southeastern reserves of titanium ores are large, widespread, and ample for anticipated demand. The leading titanium industries are mining and beneficiating sand deposits, principally in Florida, and manufacturing titanium pigments. Most of the mineral output is consumed by the producers themselves. In 1962, 20 percent of the national pigment capacity was in the Southeast.

As a part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report.2/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical use depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, as well as the available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests. Although electric utility companies have been active in grounding and bonding within substations, the mining engineer or mine electrical engineer is not involved to the extent that he can be fully up-to-date on the most effective practices for substation construction. The coal mine power system is grounded in a fundamentally different way from most other industrial power systems and is subject to considerable Federal and State regulation. At this time, there is little information that is directly applicable to the mine situation, especially if the substation must be built in an area of limited size or in low-conductivity earth. The objective of this guide is to provide specific engineering information to the mining; industry. Using as little theory as possible, it was written to be general enough to cover most substations, but specific enough to provide direct help with each substation. It will attempt to recommend practice that is in agreement with present Federal rules and regulations.

[The development and operation of ?combination on wells?5/ have created new and unusual problems, many of which cast to solved only if information is available concerning the properties of the fluids produced. Data as to the characteristics of the fluids at the relatively high pressures that exist in the reservoirs are especially important, and there is growing economic concern to know what part, if any, of the liquid recovered at the surface was liquid in the reservoir, As an extension of this problem, it is important to Know whether liquid will be formed in the reservoir it as a result o a isothermal retrograde condensation when the reservoir pressure is reduced. The pressure range of such condensation, if it occurs, is significant in the design of gas-recycling plants for maintaining reservoir pressures. In connection with the operation of such plants, it is particularly important to know how gyres sure and temperature will affect the yield of the liquid phase and the composition of the gas to be returned to the reservoir. It has not been possible to predict the behavior of these fluids that have high ratios of gas to liquid by comparing them with the behavior of low gas-liquid ratio fluids at identical pressures and temperatures. Such comparison fails because the proportions in which a component will be distributed between the phases of a system at any given temperature and pressure depend increasingly on the composition of the mixture as the critical temperature and pressure of the oysters are approached. Because many combination wells are producing from reservoirs that have temperatures near the critical point, experimental date on the properties of the fluids under reservoir conditions are particularly important at this time. To rest the immediate requirements of the industry for such experimental information an equilibrium cell has been constructed at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Bartlesville, Okla. When adequate experimental date, have boon accumulated, it may be possible to mare dependable estimates of the phase relations ft. high gas-liquid ratio fluids at the pre runes and temperatures characteristics of ?combination-well? reservoirs.]
