In this paper, closed expressions have been obtained for the frequency spectrum of a Born-Karman square lattice in terms of elliptic and hyperelliptic integrals. This work is part of continuing research by the Bureau of Mines with the thermodynamic properties of metals and minerals. Although other workers have obtained various types of approximations for the general case of the frequency spectrum of a square lattice, no one previously has obtained closed analytic expressions for this spectrum. To understand the optical and thermodynamic properties of crystals, several investigators have studied the distribution of frequencies of normal modes of vibration of the crystal lattice. Born and Karman3 laid the foundation for the theory of lattice dynamics and obtained detailed results for the case of a one-dimensional lattice. Blackman4 used numerical techniques to estimate the frequency distribution of a two-dimensional square lattice. Mbntroll5 analytically determined the frequency distribution of a square lattice for a particular value of the force constants. He also studied the more general problem and obtained some analytic approximations, using the method of moments. However, the calculations by this method were so difficult that it was not always practicable to carry them out. This paper updates an earlier report by the authors that studied electrical injuries from 1992 to 1998. The previous information is expanded and supplemented with fatal and nonfatal injury rates and trends through 2002. Injury numbers and rates were used to compare and trend electrical injury experience for various groups and categories. This information allowed identification of at-risk groups that could most benefit from effective electrical safety interventions. The data presented in this paper are derived from the U.S. Labor Department?s Bureau of Labor Statistics? Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, Survey of Occupational Illnesses and Injuries, and Current Population Survey. Between 1992 and 2002, 3378 workers died from on-the-job electrical injuries. Electricity remained the sixth leading cause of injury-related occupational death. From 1999 to 2002, 4.7% of all occupational deaths were caused by electricity, down from 5.2% in the 1992?1998 time period. The cause of death was listed as electrocution in 99.1% of fatal cases. Contact with overhead power lines was involved in 42% of all on-the-job electrical deaths. The construction industry accounted for 47% of all electrical deaths between 1992 and 2002 but showed overall improvement from 1995 to 2002 by reducing its electrical fatality rate from 2.2 to 1.5 per 100 000 workers. In addition, 46 598 workers were nonfatally injured by electricity. Contact with electric current of machine, tool, appliance, or light fixture and contact with wiring, transformers, or other electrical components accounted for 36% and 34% of nonfatal electrical injuries, respectively. Contact with underground buried power lines was involved with 1% of fatal injuries and 2% of nonfatal injuries. The research of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health aimed at evaluating commercially available overhead power line proximity warning alarms is described. This paper is expected to be the initial step for eventual development of a performance standard for such systems.

There were 63 fatalities in the California petroleum industry in 1929, the largest number in any year since 1923 and an increase of 34.0 per cent over 1928, when 47 men lost their lives in the drilling, producing, manufacturing, and marketing divisions of the industry. It will be observed from the accompanying chart that after following a consistent decline for 4 years, the fatality curve turned upward in 1923 and advanced sharply in 1929. Although this increase in fatalities coincided with a period of intensive development it tends to indicate some laxness in the industry during a period of increased hazards. Intensive drilling campaigns are usually started hurriedly and conducted with a great demand for speed, and the result is that accident-prevention work is too often relegated to a position of minor importance.

This report describes results of tests on the desilication of solutions resulting from the leaching of lime-soda sinters. Desilication was accomplished by heating the solutions in an autoclave. A liquor relatively free of silica was obtained after 30 minutes of heating at 200 p.s.i.g. in the presence of lime. The addition of lime improved desilication, but the rate and efficiency of desilication was effected by the quality of lime used. The optimum quantity of lime for effective desilication was about 6 grams per liter. A lesser quantity gave poorer desilication, and a greater quantity increased the alumina loss without improving desilication. The alumina loss was approximately proportional to the lime added. A complex structure, called artificial noselite in this report, was the only silica bearing compound detected in the desilication precipitate. Other compounds present were Ca(OH)2 (calcium hydroxide), CaCO3 (calcium carbonate), and Ca [A1(OH)6]2 (hydrated tricalcium aluminate). Sodium carbonate in the leach liquor retarded the formation of the calcium aluminate; hence it decreased the alumina lost to the precipitate. The extraction of alumina from aluminum silicate materials by the limestone soda-sinter process has been investigated by the Bureau of Mines for many years. The process consists of the following major operations: Blending the aluminum silicate with limestone and soda ash in such proportions that dicalcium silicate and sodium aluminate are formed on sintering; leaching the sinter in a carbonated caustic solution to extract the soluble alumina; purifying the leach liquor by the precipitation of soluble silica (this precipitate is designated desilication precipitate in this paper); precipitating alumina trihydrate from the purified liquors by carbonating with carbon dioxide gas; and calcining the trihydrate to alumina. The purpose of the work described in this report was to measure the effects of diesel engine emissions on the air quality of work areas in a coal mine. Concentration measurements of a number of diesel related air contaminants were made at the Martin County Coal Corporation Mine in Inez, Kentucky. Compounds measured included carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, nitric oxide, and nitrogen dioxide. In addition, concentrations of the two classes of odorous compound;, aromatic hydrocarbons, and oxygenates were obtained along, with aldehyde concentrations. Surveys were made of the mine by odor analysts to determine the perceived intensity of diesel-produced odors. It was found that the concentrations of the measured species were well below their Threshold Limit Values. Odor intensity levels in the moderate to strong range were observed in the mine.

In an investigation of the incineration of combustible wastes, the Bureau of Mines studied the effect of dimensional parameters, process variables, and fuel properties on the operation of an incinerator that consisted of a single cylindrical combustion chamber in which all combustion air was supplied tangentially above the fuel. Construction and operation of three designs of such a device proved that the tangential overfire air design is effective in providing efficient combustion and low concentration of particulate matter in the effluent gas. A correlation was found that related burning rate with air rate, chamber diameter, and inlet port diameter. In one of the incinerator models, ignition was by radiation from a preheated surface. The temperature of this surface was required to be 1,400° to 1,600° F to insure ignition of moist refuse; however, this had little effect on combustion rates. In the combustion of moist refuse, evaporation of the water proceeded through the fuel bed as a wave, with an ignition wave following the evaporation.

Miners, like many skilled blue-collar workers, are not traditional learners. They have not generally been successful in classroom-type settings, preferring to learn on the job in a hands-on environment. U.S. miners are required to have annual safety training, but they rarely view this positively. In fact, it has been called “safety jail” by many of them, who regard it as a time to get a little extra sleep. The challenge then, was to find a way to develop effective safety training for these people, particularly in view of the fact that their work is among the most dangerous of all occupations. Miners are born story tellers. They share “near-miss” stories, stories about master miners they have known, and stories about how things used to be. These stories not only pass along information about what will happen if a miner fails to respect the mining environ-ment, they also instruct listeners in the culture of mining and the values it embraces. Stories, it seems, are a way to get safety messages to miners, especially inexperienced ones, and using older, wiser miners in these stories is an obvious choice. This paper will discuss how the training videos created to get safety messages to miners were developed, how “master miners” and story lines were chosen, and how the resulting videos have been received in the mining industry.

Underground longwall mining of coal causes large scale disturbance of the surrounding rock mass. The disturbance can increase the rock mass permeability through a reduction on the stress as well as formation of new fractures in the rock. Methane gas contained in the disturbed rock mass can migrate towards the low pressure mine workings and present an explosion hazard. This paper describes the application of a finite difference program to develop a geomechanical model that predicts permeability changes within the rock mass. The calculated permeabilities are used as input to a reservoir simulator that models methane desorption from the coal matrix, methane release from the rock layers and flow towards the mine excavations. The model also considers the basic characteristics of the mine ventilation network. The geomechanical model uses empirical relationships between fracture permeability and stress to calculate permeability changes around a longwall face. The extent of rock failure is determined using a strain softening model that considers both rock matrix and bedding plane failure. The cave rock (gob) is modeled as a compressible, granulated material. The calculated horizontal and vertical permeabilities around the longwall face are averaged and used as one of the inputs to the reservoir model. The reservoir model was developed and calibrated against records of methane flow at a study mine in southwestern Pennsylvania. Good correlation between actual gas production and model outputs has been achieved. The modeling approach provides a basis for estimating methane inflow and optimizing control measures.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the Gypsum-Camel deposit on Iyoukeen Cove Chichagof Island, Southeastern Alaska, from April 21 to August 26, 1948, as A part of the United States Department of the Interior program for developing an Alaskan construction industry. As gypsum is one of the components necessary for the manufacture of cement and one of the raw materials for plaster and plaster-board products, it is desirable to locate and develop a readily accessible deposit of gypsum in Alaska. In 1928, B. D. Stewart of the Territorial Department of Mines surveyed the gypsum deposits at Iyoukeen Cove, and during the summer of 1946 George M. Flint, Jr., and Edward H. Cobb of the Federal Geological Survey examined and mapped the old workings at Gypsum Creek and the prospect at Iyoukeen Cove. Both the Territorial Department of Mines and the Federal Geological Survey recommended the Gypsum-Camel prospect as warranting a diamond-drilling program by the Bureau of Mines. The Bureau of Mines project consisted of cleaning out and sampling, the old underground workings and diamond drilling from the surface to ascertain the lateral extensions of the deposit.

Radioisotopes of selenium (se78) and tellurium (Te123) were successfully employed by the Bureau of Mines as tracers in metallurgical research directed to developing improved methods for volatilizing these elements from low-tenor raw materials. Prior research, guided and controlled by conventional analytical methods, was seriously hampered by inconsistent selenium and tellurium analyses, by the slowness of the conventional chemical methods, and by the poor accountability of these volatile elements in test products. Methods were devised and evaluated for admixing the radioactive tracer with typical raw materials and then following the deportment of the selenium and tellurium by radiometric methods with occasional chemical analysis checks. These techniques were found unusually effective in (1) quantifying the completeness and the rate of volatilization of selenium and tellurium while heating the raw materials at different rates to different temperatures and (2) accurately tracing and quantifying the distribution of minute amounts of these volatile elements in the several products made by high-temperature treatment and in the several units comprising the experimental equipment.

Experimental determinations were made of vapor-liquid equilibria data for a helium-nitrogen-methane system. A mixture composition was chosen to approximate the crude helium to be produced Or conservation that will eventually be further refined to obtain pure helium. Although there are publications of studies of the vapor-liquid equilibria of helium-nitrogen, helium-methane, and nitrogen-methane binary systems, there is little indication of work done on the ternary system of helium-nitrogen-methane. The experimental data presented in this report supplement the information available for the binary systems. The equilibrium vapor-liquid data and equilibrium vaporization coefficients are presented in tabular form. Graphs are employed to show an extensive amount of the data.

There are no producing or developing mines or active mining claims in the Deschutes Canyon RARE II study area. Only two prospects were found; they have no identified potential for mineral resources. Thin diatomite deposits occur in the Pliocene Madras Formation. Development of sand and gravel deposits in the area could not favorably compete with similar deposits in the surrounding area which are closer to points of use. By mid-1982, active oil and gas lease applications covered about 25 percent of the area, a reduction from nearly 100 percent in early 1981. No holes were drilled for oil and gas exploration. INTRODUCTION Personnel of the Bureau of Mines, Western Field Operations Center conducted a mineral investigation of the Deschutes Canyon RARE II area during the summer of 1982. The area, about 10 mi (16 km) southwest of Madras, Oregon, covers 10,890 acres (4,407 ha) in the Crooked River National Grasslands (fig. 1). The Deschutes River has incised a deep canyon into the north sloping elevated lava plain near the transitional boundary of the High Lava Plains and the Deschutes-Umatilla Plateau geomorphic divisions (Baldwin, 1964, p. 20).

"INTRODUCTION To increase the supply of ore needed to produce steel the Bureau of Mines has explored 187 mineral deposits containing chromium, iron, manganese, cobalt, nickel, fluorspar, tungsten, vanadium, or coal during the fiscal years. 1940-44, the deposits thus explored were selected from several thousand that were first examined to appraise their possibilities. The objective of the exploration was to determine the tonnage and grade of ores upon which mining, operations might be based, and the metallurgical processing that was most suitable for their utilization.Most of these deposits were sub-marginal by pre-war standards; hence there had been no incentive for their exploration, yet many such deposits were known to exist that probably contained ore sufficient in grade and amount to be utilized as war reserves.Some of the Bureau's exploration projects have disclosed substantial or even very large amounts of ore, much of which is fairly high in grade. In a few of them bodies of high-grade ore have been found, though in others the tonnage has proved to be too small or too low-grade for utilization."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the role of imported natural flake graphite in dolomite-carbon refractories used in steelmaking processes. Fundamental engineering data were obtained to enable the evaluation of substitute materials. Changes in oxidation resistance (2,000° F), hot strength (2,750° F), and deformation under load (2,7500 F) caused by 10-wt-pct additions of five different kinds of natural flake graphite and increasing quantities (0 to 30 pct) of a 90-pct-carbon natural flake graphite were studied. Results indicated that carbon purity of 10-wt-pct-graphite additions did not influence hot strength or deformation under load. When the quantity of 90-pct-carbon graphite addition varied between 0 and 30 wt pct in a dolomite-carbon brick, hot strength was highest and de-formation under load lowest with 10-wt-pct additions. As hot strength test temperature was increased from 5000 to 2,750° F, the strength difference observed between 0-and 30-wt-pct additions of a 90-pct-carbon graphite became smaller. Additions of a boron-treated graphite caused significantly higher strength and lower deformation under load at high temperatures, while an addition of ball clay significantly reduced strength and increased deformation.

Lorain, chief, Albany Division, Mining Branch, for aid in preparing the report.The property is situated in the NW1/4, sec. 26, T. 39 N., R. 29 E. about 21 miles northeast of Tonasket. Tonasket (population 643), the nearest town, is a way point on a branch line of the Great Northern Railway. The prospect is reached by a good gravel road through Havillah to Vincent's ranch, about 3 miles northeast of Havillah. From the ranch, an abandoned dirt road extends to the portal of the Moly alit, about 1 mile distant. The mine road could be kept open without difficulty if properly graded and surfaced."
