Searles Lake, CA, contains the largest known domestic tungsten resource. The brines in this near-dry lake bed, located in the Mojave Desert 130 mi northeast of Los Angeles, contain an estimated 135 MMlb of tungsten. However, the low concentration of tungsten (0.080 g/L W03) in the supersaturated brine makes selective tungsten extraction very difficult. Although many brine chemicals are extracted from the lake, tungsten recovery was an elusive goal prior to Bureau of Mines development of an ion-exchange technique. This publication describes the Bureau process. The following subjects are ad-dressed: ? The Searles Lake tungsten resource. ? General problems associated with tungsten recovery. ? Bureau research objectives. ? Synthesis of ion-exchange resins. ? Development of a two-stage ion-exchange tungsten extraction and concentration procedure. ? Product recovery and purification. ? The Townsite mine, consisting of 40 acres in the town of Cardin, Okla., is in the center of a highly productive part of the Picher-Cardin district of the Tri-State zinc and lead field. Previous to the time of the work done by the Bureau of Mines, the property had been partly explored by churn drilling, and an area-of about 8 acres in the southwestern corner had been exploited by underground workings. The Bureau of Mines investigation had as its object the more intensive development of the northern part of the property where previous drilling had indicated a possible ore deposit of commercial grade. Churn drilling by the Bureau began in September 1942 and continued to February 1943. Twenty holes totaling 4,827 feet of bore were completed. Utilizing the information gained from these drill holes, the Weidman Mining Co., lessee of the tract, sank a shaft and proceeded to the exploitation of the indicated ore bodies.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds in Harrison County, W. Va. It is one in a series of Federal Bureau of Mines reports planned to determine coals suitable for the production of metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Over 6.5 million tons of coal was produced in Harrison County, W. Va., in 1958, of which over 3.7 million tons was cleaned mechanically in seven preparation plants. All of the coal cleaned was from the Pittsburgh bed. It has been estimated that more than 1,816 million tons of coal remains in the county in beds 12 inches or more thick. The Pittsburgh and Redstone beds were selected by the Bureau for a study based on current production rates and estimated minable reserves. Sample locations were selected following a study of the literature, conferences with mining engineers and mining company officials in the field, and examination of the available sites. Six samples were collected from the Pittsburgh bed, and three samples came from the Redstone bed, Float-and-sink tests of the samples collected from the Pittsburgh and Redstone beds showed that neither coal could be upgraded to a metallurgical fuel under the standards set up for this study, even after intensive preparation. Finer crushing of the samples moderately increased the yields and slightly reduced both the ash and the sulfur contents in the 1.30-specific-gravity float fractions. Finer crushing slightly decreased the yields in the 1.58-specific-gravity float fractions, whereas it reduced the sulfur content 0.11 percent for the Redstone sample and 0.46 for the Pittsburgh sample.

This report describes an accident, which took place in the Chemical Corrosion Laboratory at the College Park, Md., Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines. The accident occurred while Walter L. Acherman, chemist, was performing a routine manipulation during a corrosion experiment involving commercially pure titanium and red-fuming nitric acid. There was a sudden and very violent reaction, and a large quantity of acid was thrown in the face and over the body of Acherman, causing serious injury. L. B. Golden, chief of the Chemical Corrosion Section, was exposed to nitric acid fumes during the ensuing rescue and first-aid operations and died on January 25, 1954. According to the medical report, the direct cause of Mr. Golden's death was pulmonary edema and confluent bronchopneumonia; the contributary cause, was inhalation of fumes from red fuming nitric acid. The following employees of the College Park Station contributed to this report by supplying information on the accident and assisted in the rescue operation: L. B. This study provides recommendations for improved safety in underground blasting procedures based on in-mine observations of blasting practices in 30 underground metal, non-metal, and coal mines, and the analysis of blasting accidents since 1970 and existing state and federal regulations pertaining to the storage and use of explosives. Results of these analyses and observations indicate that 1) blasting accidents have declined but are an important contributor to the hazards of underground mining; 2) existing regulations are essentially adequate; 3) greater emphases should be placed on human errors and unsafe practices and the enforcement of existing regulations; and 4) future revisions of these regulations and standards should be organized, and their intent coordinated to eliminate ambiguities.

The Bureau of Mines studied the conversion of a variety of cellulosic wastes, for example, sawdust, bovine manure, sewage sludge, urban refuse (free of metal and ceramics), etc., to heavy oils. The objective of the investigation was to determine the scope of the reaction and elucidate the chemistry involved. The reactions took place in the presence of synthesis gas and water or carbon monoxide and water under conditions of elevated temperatures and pressures. Waste conversions above 90 pct, often near 99 pct, with oil yields in the range of 40 to 60 pct, were obtained in the temperature range of 250° to 425° C and pressure range of 1,500 to 4,000 psig. Because mild conditions were sought, most of the experiments were conducted at temperatures of 250° to 350° C and pressures of 1,500 to 3,000 psig. In general, lower viscosity products were obtained at higher reaction temperatures. Conversions and oil yields were significantly increased by operating in the presence of a high-boiling oil; either anthracene oil or oil recycled from the process was satisfactory. Synthesis gas containing 50 pct carbon monoxide gave satisfactory results as a replacement for carbon monoxide. Cobalt molybdate on alumina catalyst, used with sodium carbonate, gave a product of lower viscosity and lower oxygen content than sodium carbonate used as the sole catalyst. The waste-to-oil process has been successfully investigated in continuous flow equipment as well as in batch autoclaves.

The first full year of the second World War for the United States presented a picture of the metal-and nonmetal-mining 4 industry which, without proper analysis and explanation, would convey a distorted view of achievements during 1942, especially because employment at gold and silver (lode and placer) mines-the largest group-declined to such an extent that the over-all totals for the country were reduced even though increases were made at mines producing copper, lead-zinc, iron, miscellaneous metals, and non-metals. A complete panorama of the metal-and nonmetal-mining industry, exclusive of coal mining, reveals a decrease in the number of men employed, the man-hours of employment, and the accident-frequency rates. Were the gold and silver (lode and placer) mines to be considered as a separate category; it would be seen that the number of men employed at all the other groups of mines increased appreciably over 1941. These other increases must be considered important, since these mines produced the vital war minerals that made valuable contributions to the military successes of the United States and its Allies during the year. A separate analysis of each of the various groups of mines may be found elsewhere in this bulletin. For the purpose of maintaining continuity in this series of bulletins, however, the discussion in this introduction will be confined to the entire metal-and nonmetal-mining industry (excluding coal mining, for which a separate bulletin, No. 462, has been published).

This guide was written to furnish the coal industry with a description of techniques, instruments, and clues on how to find abandoned oil and gas wells that have penetrated coal seams. The report includes specific information on searching techniques currently in use by several coal mining companies, gas-transmission companies, and waterflood operators, as well as information on State agencies responsible for the enforcement of laws and the preservation and distribution of data pertaining to the drilling, development, and abandonment of oil and gas wells. Comparative tests were performed with several commercial electronic metal detectors to determine the feasibility of using them to aid in the search for abandoned wells and to determine the instrument most suited for that particular use. The role of methane detectors to locate abandoned wells is described, including a case history. Tests were made to develop an efficient procedure to follow in systematically searching an area for metallic clues or hydrocarbon evidence to abandoned wells. The guide describes, in detail, a search sequence, including the collection of basic data, preparation of the selected area, and the physical search. Methods are given for evaluating the results.

"This paper describes the history of LDV measurements employed in research involving gas-solid flows. Much of the discussion deals with measurement techniques employed to obtain separate and simultaneous solid and gas phase velocities. Also, LDV based measurement techniques that arc used to obtain particle size and concentration information in conjunction with the velocity measurements arc presented.INTRODUCTIONThere are numerous examples of industrial processes in which the motion of a solid or droplet dispersed phase in a suspending gas phase is critically important. The applications range from spray droplets injected into combustion chambers to the understanding of the time release mechanisms of particles generated by dissolving pharmaceutical tablets. In many of these processes, the heat, mass, and/or momentum transfer between the dispersed phase and the suspending fluid arc the items of interest. In the past, much of the phenomena were characterized by empirical models derived from flow averaged measurements. Gradual developments in laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV), have provided researchers with an unobtrusive measurement technique capable of obtaining the particle size velocity and concentration with good spatial resolution.In the two decades that LDV instrumentation has been available, most of the uses have concentrated on single phase fluid flow measurements. The light scattered from seed particles small enough to follow complex fluid motions, including turbulence, is converted into velocity information. While the utility of this instrument in single phase flows has been demonstrated beyond question, the use of LDV in gas-solid multiphase flows has had a more gradual development. The measurements ·of interest in these flow regimes are usually the velocity of the suspending fluid as well as that of the dispersed particulate phase. Early investigators were quick to see the potential of this instrument for measurements in gas-solid flows. The interest soon expanded to the development of instruments that could also simultaneously measure particle size and concentration within a two-phase flow field.This paper tracks the historical development of LDV technology as applied to gas-solid flows. The techniques to measure particle velocity, size, and concentration arc treated in separate sections although much of the development occurred simultaneously. Finally, some unique applications conducted at West Virginia University and other locations will be discussed in the application section."

Underground miners may be exposed to hazardous quantities of toxic gases, such as carbon monoxide (CO), generated from mine fires or explosions. Every underground miner is required to carry a filter self-rescuer (FSR), which when operated will remove CO from the miner's breathing air. In addition, every underground miner must have a self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) near the worksite that will supply breathing oxygen. In many situations, miners do not know when to don either rescuer since they do not know if there is a fire in the mine, nor do they carry instrumentation necessary for the detection of the toxic, colorless, and odorless fire product CO. If each miner carried a personal CO alarm, which would respond to high concentrations of CO, the miner would then be alerted when to don either the FSR or SCSR and exit the mine. A prototype personal miner's CO alarm called PEMCOAL was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The PEMCOAL unit is small enough to be carried on a miner's belt, has a flash lamp visual alarm, requires no calibration for use, and uses a chemical sensor that changes color by reaction with trace quantities of CO. The chemical sensor was tested at concentrations of CO from 10 to 1,000 ppm, at temperatures from 5° to 40° C, and with several potential mine gas interferents. The PEMCOAL alarm times were sufficiently fast to warn miners before they are exposed to hazardous quantities of CO.

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy has been employed to· examine the role of tetraperoxochromate( V) ions (Cro:-) and other Cr(V) species in the generation of hydroxyl (OH) radicals in the reaction of Cr(VI) with H2O 2 in biological media. In contrast to earlier suggestions, the present ESR studies using crystalline K3CrO8 as a source of Cro:- show that decomposition of Cro:- in water or in H2O 2 does not generate significant amounts of OH radicals. Addition of NADH to a solution containing Cro:- yields a Cr(V)-NADH complex, which readily reacts with H2O 2 to generate OH radicals. Similar results obtained from several other biological reductants, including vitamin B2 , indicate that a vacant coordination site on a Cr(V) complex facilitates its reaction with H2O 2 to generate ""OH radicals. We thus suggest that in biological media, reaction [3] instead of [1] or [2] is the major pathway for the OH radical generation: While the carcinogenic potential of Cr(Vl)-based compounds has been well established via epidemiologic and animal studies (1), the underlying biochemical mechanism is still not well understood (2). In a recent development, however, Kawanishi et al. (3) have reported that hydroxyl (OH)2 radicals might be the key species in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity. As to the mechanism of the ""OH radical formation they suggest that Cr(VI) reacts with cellular hydrogen peroxide (H2O 2) to form the tetraperoxochromate(V) (Crog-) ions, which decompose to produce hydroxyl radicals. It was also suggested (3) that the ""OH radicals thus produced cause genotoxicity via DNA base modification and deoxyribose phosphate backbone alterations. More recently Aiyar et al. (4) reported the detection of OH radicals in the reaction of Cr(VI) with H2O 2 in biological media, including the reaction of ""OH radicals with deoxyguanosine to generate 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine adducts, confirming that ""OH radicals could indeed play a significant role in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity. However, the mechanism for the ""OH generation was not clarified, although the role of Crog- ions as possible precursors was mentioned, somewhat along the lines suggested by Kawanishi et al. (3). The possibility of the participation of Crog- in the ""OH generation has also been indicated by Sugiyama et al. (5), since they mention that vitamin B2 enhances the formation of""OH radicals in the reaction of Cr(VI) with H2O 2 because of the generation of Crog- in the reaction."

Finite-element,, mathematical models that solve LaPlace's and Richard's equations numerically were used to locate the phreatic surface within tailings pond embankments and to define the subsurface flow of water from the pond. Both must be known to design structurally and environmentally safe tailings dams. The permeability distribution within and beneath the embankment, the fluid potential values upgradient and downgradient from the embankment, and the geometry and elevation of an approximately impermeable layer at some depth beneath the embankment were used as computer inputs in analyzing over a dozen finite-element models of tailings dams varying structurally from simple to complex. Results predicted with the finite-element model were confirmed with measurements in a laboratory model of a tailings pond and in the field. Of particular importance to the design of safe slopes, all data indicated that the phreatic surface within a tailings dam is concave upward, a configuration opposite that in most earth dams. The close correlation between predicted and experimental values confirmed the practicability of using the finite-element technique to design safe tailings dams.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes the results from an in-mine investigation of an alternative longwall gate road design. The coal mine operator modified the pillar layout (reversed the location of the big and small pillars) in a portion of a three-entry longwall gate road area. The modified pillar layout was an attempt to reduce stress and, subsequently, stress-related ground control problems (cutter roof and dynamic floor heave events) in the tailgate region during "second-panel" mining. The results from borehole pressure cells installed in the modified gate road area showed that the ground pressures in the panel edge and adjacent small pillar were significantly reduced during second-panel mining compared with ground pressures experienced in the typical pillar layout gate road areas. The reduced stress levels around the tailgate entry adjacent to the second panel, as compared with the tailgate stress levels with the typical pillar arrangement, contributed to improved tailgate ground conditions in the test pillar zone.

To assist the anthracite industry obtain technical data on pneumatic packing, the Federal Bureau of Mines imported a pneumatic packing machine from Germany and installed it in a mine of a cooperating company in the Northern anthracite field of Pennsylvania. This report covers the second in a series of experiments in applying pneumatic packing for controlling strata movement (subsidence) above mine workings in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. The first experiment2/ was begun in January 1950, in a section of the mine where about 50 percent of the original coal remained in the form of pillars; since the company did not plan to mine the pillars in this particular area, pneumatic packing of the chamber voids was done for test purposes only. During this initial test the machine was operated on 204 shifts, and 652,400 cubic feet of breaker refuse material (22,834 tons) was packed into the voids of 16 chambers. The work was completed in December 1951.

The Act of Congress approved June 25, 1926 (Public Act 424, 69th Congress), authorized joint investigations by the U. S. Geological Survey and the U. S. Bureau of Mines to determine "the location, extent, and mode of occurrence of potash deposits in the United States." The particular deposits selected for exploration were the extensive rock-salt formations underlying large areas in western Texas and southeastern New Mexico, from which potash salts had been identified in the cuttings and sludges from oil wells drilled with cable tools. The evidence of these sludge samples was qualitative only and beyond definitely proving the presence of potash salts in the salt beds, gave little clue to the possible size, richness, or extent of the potash occurrences.

The vibration and impact environment for crew members on locomotives has been investigated in a series of studies conducted by Exponent Failure Analysis Associates (Exponent) beginning in 1990. Locomotive cab vibration and impact levels were measured on a variety of locomotive models operating over many different track sections across the Union Pacific, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, CSX, Norfolk Southern, and CONRAIL systems. The comfort and health implications of exposure to the measured locomotive vibration levels were evaluated by comparison with the human vibration exposure boundaries given in the International Standards Organization (ISO) standard 2631-1:1997, the British Standard 6841:1987, European Union (EU) Directive 2002/44/EC, measurements made by Exponent on various commercial and recreational vehicles, and vibration exposure measurement data found in the literature. Methods Initially, vibration levels experienced by locomotive crews were measured and recorded at incremental speeds covering the range of normal train operation. In 2003, a method of measuring the vibration exposure continuously by means of a digital recorder was developed, allowing the vibration level over the entire run or crew shift to be analyzed. For each seating location measured, acceleration was recorded on the seat surface beneath the ischial tuberosities (pelvis) of the seated crew member and on the cab floor directly under the seat. At each of the locations, triaxial accelerometers were used to measure the vibration along the longitudinal, lateral, and vertical axes. Since the vibration environment varies throughout the route, and locomotive vibration levels have been found to be primarily speed dependent, a speed sensor was used to continuously measure the speed of the train. To evaluate the recorded vibrations levels, the data was divided into two-minute segments, which were each processed per the 1997 ISO standard for weighted RMS vibration levels and Vibration Dose Values (VDV). Additionally, PSDs and 1/3 Octave RMS values were calculated to determine the frequency content of the vibration. For each two-minute segment, the average speed of the locomotive was calculated to allow for correlation with the recorded vibration exposure values. The resulting exposure values for the entire run were calculated by combining the data from all of the two-minute segments. Since introducing the continuous method of recording acceleration, 23 seating locations have been recorded on 11 locomotives traveling 11 different routes across various parts of the United States. One of the routes was a shift of ‘yard work’, traveling back and forth in a rail yard coupling train cars together. A working understanding of present coal mine communications equipment and its usage is an essential prerequisite to the determination of future communications systems needs. As a means of gaining this understanding, a field survey program was planned and implemented. The plan formulated called for obtaining both qualitative and quantitative data from three main areas of interest: the types, physical condition, and performance characteristics of equipment presently used in the sample of mines to be visited; the relationship present communications has to safety and productivity; and the practical, future communications needs as derived through interviews with present mine management. In compliance with the original plan, the type and physical condition of equipment in use was found through at-mine interviews of personnel responsible for installation and maintenance. Further evaluation was made through the review of equipment instruction books and maintenance manuals and through in-mine inspection of communications equipment and signal distribution networks. The performance characteristics were determined through listening to conversations and noise levels and by talk-testing from randomly selected stations throughout each mine. System operation was evaluated by asking communication system users their opinions and by noting any difficulties personnel had using the systems.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a comprehensive study of the Kanab, Kolob, Kaiparowits, and Harmony coalfields of southwestern Utah to obtain additional information and to determine the potentials of these coalfields as sources of energy for steam-electric power-generating plants. Field examinations were made to ascertain the geologic structure and the stratigraphy of the coalfields, the accessibility of the coal-bearing strata, and the general nature of the coal-bearing strata and the terrain. Many mines, both active and abandoned, were examined, and key personnel in the coal industry in the area were consulted. Available analyses of southwestern Utah coals were compiled, and tentative conclusions regarding the rank and quality of the coals were drawn. Coals have been classified by rank according to the standards established by the American Society for Testing and Materials in 1964. The Parr formula for moist, mineral-matter-free British thermal units has been used to calculate the rank of each sample, except as otherwise noted. Water resources related to the areas of the coal reserves also were investigated. Existing literature and maps pertaining to the geology of the areas were reviewed. Production potentials of the coalfields and economic conditions affecting the possible utilization of the coal reserves as sources of energy for steam-powered electricity-generating plants were investigated and analyzed. The data obtained and the conclusions reached as a result of this study are included in this document. The total reserves of subbituminous A and high-volatile bituminous C coals in the fields of southwestern Utah are estimated to be at least 8 billion short tons at depths generally less than 2,000 feet. It appears likely that this estimate will be increased as additional data are made available through exploration and other investigations. Sufficient coal is available in four southwestern Utah counties to supply three or four large steam-electric plants. If the States involved grant water rights to companies planning to build steam-electric plants, the cost of producing power with coal might be attractive and might justify the construction of one or more of these plants.

The location, features, qualities, and extent of iron occurrences and the associated resources--limestone and dolomite, bentonite, coal-lignite, petroleum and natural gas, power, and water--are evaluated. The results of pioneer beneficiation tests on South Dakota taconite are discussed. In addition, pertinent features of taconite development, cost factors, the Western and Central United States trade area and markets are reported. The State's production of iron ores until 1963 has been small and for purposes other than the manufacture of iron. This investigation disclosed the probability of large resources of taconite in Pennington and Lawrence Counties. The average iron content is 29 percent, and a 65-percent or better iron concentrate might be produced. Ample resources are available for mining and processing taconite. An investment of at least $26 million would be required for a plant capable of turning out 1 million tons of agglomerated iron concentrate per year. The feasibility of such an enterprise is indicated, but intensive investigation and research must be completed to justify such an investment.
