This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the development of a protective operator compartment for a new generation thin-seam mobile bridge carrier. The developed compartment is commercially available and is currently employed on approximately 15 bridge carriers used in the mining industry. The design of the compartment, which employed human factors engineering and small- and full-scale mockup models, is fully described. Details of the compartment's fabrication, evaluation, and demonstration in a commercial low-seam coal mine are also provided.

The purpose of this study was to determine mine workers' state of fire-fighting preparedness and the technology being used to detect and respond to underground coal mine fires. To investigate this problem, 214 underground coal miners were interviewed by U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers. Frequency distributions of workers ' responses are presented in this report, along with segments of narrative accounts, to profile miners' fire-fighting capabilities. The data indicated that much variability exists from mine to mine and that there are several important changes operators may undertake in order to make miners better prepared to deal with fire underground: select appropriate sensors, establish and test a warning and communication protocol, construct a system capable of delivering hundreds of gallons of water per minute for sustained periods, institute formal fire preparedness audits, develop case studies of events that occur at an operation to use as teaching and assessment tools, and provide structured practice that can be incorporated into fire drills.

NO MORE important question has come before the coal-mining industry in many places, especially in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania, than prevention of stream pollution by mine drainage. Available information on acid mine drainage in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania indicates that a pollution problem must be solved in any program of anthracite mine drainage. The major problem concerns satisfactory disposal of the daily average mine-water discharge of 327,000 gallons per minute (g. p. m.), or 472 million gallons per day (g. p. d.), containing a free-acid load of 431 tons or a total acid load of 934 tons a clay as H2S04. This report indicates the scope of the problem and gives some suggestions concerning its solution.

The Bureau of Mines sampled surface exposures of podiform chromite in the Caribou Mountain-Melozitna ultramafic belt in the Kokrines-Hodzana Highlands, central Alaska. Fieldwork began in 1979 as part of an assessment of the mineral potential of lands adjacent to the trans-Alaska pipeline corridor, for the Bureau of Land Management, and continued through 1981 as a Bureau of Mines investigation. The belt comprises six complexes of which the three closest to the pipeline corridor were investigated. Concentrations of chromite disseminated in dunite host rock make up mineralized intervals ranging in thickness from less than an inch to 5 ft and in grade from 3 to 23 pct chromium. The largest occurrence has an exposed strike length of 80 ft. Bulk surface samples were collected from 10 of these exposures, and beneficiation tests on the samples produced concentrates of metallurgical, refractory, and subindustrial grades. An analysis of three 1-1/4-diam manufactured wire ropes of 6x19 classification was done to identify and describe reference conditions of new rope. Reference condition is of value when examining tested or retired ropes. Measurements of strand and rope pitch and of wire and rope diameter confirmed adherence of all ropes to those construction specifications. Mechanical properties of strength and ductility were determined by accepted methods for the ropes and wires from the ropes. Individual wires from one rope failed to meet minimum wire ductility values. Wire chemical composition varied in average carbon levels, from 0.70 to 0.78 wt pct, and in manganese content, from 0.45 to 0.80 wt pct. One manufacturer's product contained 1 to 3 wt pct Ni and Cr. Heavily wrought pearlitic steel microstructures were porous and contained inclusions. Cold work variations were evidenced by wrought grain width. Recorded anomalies reflected the condition of the manu-factured products. The report provides data that compare the three wire ropes studied, but cannot verify the effects that these conditions or anomalies have on rope service life.

A combined ion - exchange X- ray spectrographic method was developed and evaluated for determining trace amounts of cobalt and nickel in high - purity tungsten and tungsten trioxide . The sensitivity for both cobalt and nickel is in the range from 0.2 to 0.5 μg ( 0.04 to 0.1 ppm , based on 5 gram samples ) . Accuracy at the 5 to 20 μg level is ±10 percent of the amount present . Approximately 16 hours elapsed time is required for analysis

A physical beneficiation flowsheet was designed by the Bureau of Mines for reclaiming and recycling metal and mineral values contained in municipal incinerator residues, and a continuous processing plant was installed. Residue samples collected from incinerators located in various parts of the country were processed at a rate of 1/2 ton per hour. Continuous screening, shredding, grinding, magnetic separation, and gravity concentration techniques were applied to produce metallic iron concentrates, clean nonferrous metal composites, clean fine glass fractions, and tine carbonaceous ash tailings. Research to develop systems for refining and upgrading the reclaimed metals and glass into marketable products is also underway. From the engineering data developed in the continuous processing plant, evaluations of the capital and operating costs for plants with capacities of 250, 400, 670, and 1,000 tons of dry incinerator residues per day were made. Research on a parallel system to separate and recover the metals, minerals, glass, paper, and plastics from raw, unburned refuse it currently underway, as are studies on the use of air classification to separate the refuse into organic and inorganic fractions.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report discusses elastic wave velocity and attenuation behavior as an indicator for changes in load and structural integrity of coal samples. Measuring changes in compressional (P)-wave and shear (S)-wave attenuation and velocity under uniaxial and triaxial compression tests revealed their effectiveness for distinguishing changes in applied load and structural failure of samples. The velocity and attenuation values were used in further calculations such as ratios of P-wave to S-wave values, dynamic elastic constants, normalized velocities, and attenuation coefficients to reveal trends for loading and failure. The behavior of both P-wave and S-wave attenuation and velocity together define distinct and consistent phases of load change and failure for uniaxial and triaxial tests. The S-wave velocity and attenuation illustrate changing axial load and initial development of microfractures within the sample preceding structural failure more clearly than those of the P-wave. The attenuation and velocity ratios and dynamic elastic constants (except the bulk modulus) respond to closure of small preexisting fractures within the coal sample with initial loading to failure of coal samples. The attenuation coefficients and normalized velocities reveal trends similar to those shown by velocity and attenuation.

Both Dimensional and Inspectional Analysis are developed from fundamental concepts , and dimensionless groups are derived which represent the viscous , capillary , and gravitational forces existing in two - phase , incompressible flow in petroleum reservoirs . It is shown how properly scaled models may be devised by means of the foregoing groups . Laboratory measurements with such models faithfully duplicate the behavior of the reservoir on a miniature dimensional and compressed time scale , and when all the pertinent variables are evaluated , the model is a most effective tool for the study of complex fluid displacements in the reservoir . Applying the Principle of Similitude , it is shown how dimensionally scaled models are applied to various types of reservoir displacements : ( 1 ) Oil displaced by water , ( 2 ) gas displaced by water , and ( 3 ) miscible displacement . The special case of water displacing gas by imbibition is analyzed , and it is shown that the dimensionally scaled model must be fabricated of sandstone rather than unconsolidated sand , which is generally used in such models . This report is intended to be a review and summary of the application of Dimensional Analysis to reservoir displacement problems for those who are beginning the study of this useful and interesting method .

[A proposes process for recovering manganese from open-hearth steel-plant slogs is indicated by the flow diagram shown in figure 1. Investigation of the process, the laboratory development of which was reported previously,4/ was expanded to a larger scale. Mixtures of flush slags and limestone were proportioned to have molar [SiO2] ratios of 1.5 to 2.2 and were fired at temperatures up to 2,400° F. In an oxidizing atmosphere. This produced clinker consisting principally me various combinations of the oxides of manganese, iron, aluminum, and magnesium aloe with a dicalcium silicate phase containing the phosphorus. Some tests were made with a continuous sintering machine of the traveling-grate type, but a rotary kiln was the most satisfactory apparatus for this operation. Material was fed at 150 to 200 pounds per hour after first being agglomerated either on the sintering or else binder extruding and drying finely ground mixture of the sing, limestone, binder, and water. Tests with slag; from tree different source indicated overkill manganese recoveries of 65 to 80 percent by ammoniacal-ammonium-carbonate leaching.]

This report describes how longitudinal and bending stress waves in' percussive drill rods generate noise. It is shown that in practical drills the largest noise source is the bending waves, which are mainly generated because of imperfections in the piston, chuck, and drill rod alignment. Equations are presented which enable the noise spectra generated by the bending and longitudinal waves to be precisely predicted. Means for reducing the amplitude of the bending waves are discussed.

This publication is an economic evaluation of the Bureau of Mines electrolytic process for recovering lead from scrap lead-acid batteries. In this process, scrap batteries are crushed and separated into metal and sludge fractions. The metal fraction is cast as anodes and electro- refined. Lead in the sludge fraction is converted to lead carbonate by reaction with an ammonium carbonate-ammonium bisulfite solution. The lead carbonate is then dissolved in a fluosilicic acid electrolyte from which pure lead metal is electrowon. A cost estimate is presented for a plant capable of processing 10,000 scrap batteries per day. The fixed capital cost for this plant is estimated to he $14 million on a fourth quarter 1984 basis. Operating costs are estimated to be $0.15/lb Pb recovered. Assuming a lead selling price of $0.17/lb, the interest rate of return on investment after taxes is 11 pct. A lead selling price of about $0.21/lb is needed to obtain a 20-pct-interest rate of return.

"The Riley tungsten property of the Northern Nevada Mining Co. was examined by the Bureau of Mines in August 1943, and from February 22 to August 22, 1945, the property was explored by the Bureau.Riley mine, which comprises 60 acres, is in sec. 9, T. 38 N., R. 42 E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, in the Potosi Mining District, on the east slope of the Osgood Range in eastern Humboldt County, Nevada. J. S. Riley is president of Northern Nevada Mining Co., the general offices of which are at 29 East First Street, Reno, Nev.Winnemucca, Nev., 42 miles southwest of the mine and on the main line of the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific Railroads and U. S. Highway 40, is the nearest supply center. The post office for the Potosi district is 15 miles south at Red House, Nev., a station on the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific Railroads. A good dirt road, which leaves U. S Highway 40 about 15 miles east of Winnemucca, extends northeast to the property.Tungsten occurs as scheelite in a characteristic Nevada contact-metamorphic tactite deposit between limestone and granodiorite Fifteen diamond-drill holes were completed for a total length of 2,630 feet.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions5/ issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

The borehole surveying system described is used to measure ground movement over and near operating mines. The magnitude of any movement is con-trolled by the ground conditions, the mining method, and the mine progress. By correlating these factors with the measured movement, equations can be determined for predicting the effect of mine progress on the surrounding ground. These equations can also be used to predict the effect of mining a similar deposit with similar ground conditions. The borehole surveying system is used in cased boreholes to measure the inclination of the hole in two perpendicular planes. Grooved casing with an inside diameter of 3 inches is grouted in the hole. Two probes are used to obtain the data necessary to calculate the hole position versus depth. One of the probes contains a gyroscope, and the other contains a biaxial force-balance [s]ervoaccelerometer. Readings from the transducers in the probe are punched on paper tape by an automatic data acquisition system as the probe is pulled up the hole at 30 feet per minute by an electric winch. Readings from the inclinometer probe containing the accelerometer are used as input data to an on-line programmable calculator as they are punched on tape. The calculator computes preliminary results of the survey being made. The paper tapes obtained during the survey runs are later used as input to a computer that computes the offsets of the drill hole versus depth in true north-south and east-west planes. These offsets are printed for each foot of depth. Changes in these offsets between the first survey and subsequent surveys are a measure of the horizontal ground movement between the surveys.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of 23 coal samples collected from nine of the more significant coalbeds of Fayette County, W. Va. In 1963 almost 5.4 million tons of medium to high volatile B coals of excellent quality for metallurgical and steam markets were produced in Fayette County. Of the 23 coal samples collected 11 would require some upgrading to pro-vide metallurgical quality products, 11 were acceptable as received, and 1 was a noncaking coal. Cleaning these coals to metallurgical standards would require only the removal of the sink 1.58 specific gravity material which would be quite easy as very little near-separating-gravity material was present at this gravity.

Research performed by the U.S. insurance industry has determined that mine subsidence is uninsurable. Consequently, the insurance industry has decided not to voluntarily offer mine subsidence insurance. The U.S. Department of the Interior has long been investigating the effects of mine subsidence. These investigations have resulted in Federal regulations and controls of mine subsidence. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report generally describes mine subsidence, the development of mine subsidence insurance programs, and the eight current mine subsidence insurance programs in the United States. The States that have these subsidence programs include Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Major aspects of the programs include history, administrative and operational procedures, insurable structures, recognition of mine subsidence, major exclusions, claims, insurance premiums, and the economic health of each program. Addresses of agencies involved with mine subsidence insurance are also given. Information within this report can be useful for residential and commercial property owners and mine operators. States that are considering starting or have an existing mine subsidence insurance program can also use this report as a model for initiating or modifying their programs.

This report describes the design, analysis, and results of a special experimental mine-sampling project conducted as part of the Bureau of Mines continuing program on sample-methods research. The experimental project was conducted at the Bureau?s Denver Mining Research Center and at the Climax molybdenum mine within the framework of a cooperative research agreement between the Bureau and Climax Molybdenum Co., Division of American Metals-Climax, Inc. The primary objective of the project was to investigate the interrelation-ship between sample volume, number of samples, the standard deviation of an assay distribution, and the precision required for an estimate of grade of ore, and to develop this interrelationship into a relatively simple method of application for use in mine sampling.

This paper describes the Bureau of Mines efforts in the research and development of a new and innovative mine lighting system which is based on fiber optics technology. The new lighting concept offers significant advantages over conventional systems in the areas of both safety and long- term maintenance costs. An overview of Bureau research into the problems and limitations of present-day mine lighting systems is also presented.
