The report describes the development of preliminary requirement specifications for standardized operating controls for roof bolting machines used in underground coal mining. According to recent statistics, roof bolting continues to be one of the most hazardous occupations in underground coal mining. The two principal hazards to the roof bolter operator are the machine itself and roof falls during the bolting cycle. The lack of standardization of machine controls is a major contributor to this hazardous situation. Observations of roof bolting operations and discussions with roof bolter manufacturers coupled with detailed analyses of roof bolter control design specifications were performed during this study. Detailed roof bolter operator task analyses, commonality of control analyses, and classical link analyses were also performed. The results of these analyses were then used to produce preliminary requirement specifications for standardized controls.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to degasify a virgin block of coal in the Beckley Coalbed using long horizontal holes drilled in an array from the bottom of a ventilation air shaft. Eight horizontal holes and an in situ pressure hole were drilled in a radial pattern to depths ranging from 418 to 910 ft (127 to 277 m) and 205 ft (62 m), respectively. The investigation showed the shaft was in a basin saturated with water, which resulted in low gas flows from holes. The in situ pressure at 200 ft (61 m) into the coalbed was 79 psig (544.6 KN/m2). The aver- age gas and water flows for the eight holes were 94,100 ft3/day (2,665 m3/day) and 13 gal/min (49.3 l/min) . After 514 days of degasification, 18.7 million ft3 (0.53 million m3) of gas had been drained. Methane face emissions, which were measured as a section advanced toward the shaft, were reduced about 77 pct, emphasizing the value of drainage by this technique. All holes were grouted before the area around the shaft was mined.

A commercial, battery-powered mine vehicle has been equipped for remote operation in coal mines. This vehicle is controlled by an operator from the remote station. Command signals originating at the remote station as well as video and data signals originating on board the vehicle are relayed between the remote station and vehicle using a single coaxial line. This coaxial line is normally 2,000 feet in length and is reeled in and out from a drum mounted aboard the vehicle The vehicle has a maximum speed of 6 ft/sec and a minimum speed of 4 ft/sec using 36-volt excitation of the traction motor. If this traction motor is excited by two of the three batteries, 24-volt excitation, the vehicle will travel at approximately 2 ft/sec. The speed can be reduced by the operator to 1 ft/sec. This vehicular system has been tested in coal mines. Presently, the major limitation of this system is associated with fatigue failure of the splices in the coaxial line and lack of mobility caused by its 3-wheel design.

Respirable dust exposure has long been known to be a serious health threat to workers in many industries. In coal mining, overexposure to respirable coal mine dust can lead to coal workers? pneumoconiosis (CWP). CWP is a lung disease that can be disabling and fatal in its most severe form. In addition, miners can be exposed to high levels of respirable silica dust, which can cause silicosis, another disabling and/or fatal lung disease. Once contracted, there is no cure for CWP or silicosis. The goal, therefore, is to limit worker exposure to respirable dust to prevent development of these diseases. The passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 established respirable dust exposure limits, dust sampling requirements for inspectors and mine operators, a voluntary x-ray surveillance program to identify CWP in underground coal miners, and a benefits program to provide compensation to affected workers and their families. The tremen­dous human and financial costs resulting from CWP and silicosis in the U.S. underground coal mine workforce are shown by the following statistics: ? During 1970?2004, CWP was a direct or contributing cause of 69,377 deaths of U.S. underground coal mine workers. ? During 1980?2005, over $39 billion in CWP benefits were paid to underground coal miners and their families. ? Recent x-ray surveillance data for 2000?2006 show an increase in CWP cases. Nearly 8% of examined underground coal miners with 25 or more years of experience were diagnosed with CWP. ? ?Continuous miner operator? is the most frequently listed occupation on death certificates that record silicosis as the cause of death.

"In order to stimulate general interest in mine safety among their employees the mining companies of Butte, Mont., instituted in 1918 a Miners' Field Day, and this field day has since been held annually about the end of July, the last one being on July 25, 1921. One by one new metals come to share the burden of modern industry. Long before the Christian era potters and glass workers employed fine and costly blue pigments that contained cobalt. Cobalt blue class has been found in the tombs of the Egyptians and in the ruins of Troy, and many of the colors used by the ancient Greeks and Romans contained cobalt. The ancients, however, were apparently unaware that the colors they used were caused by cobalt, and it was not until late in the 17th century that the existence of the element was recognized, Writers in the Middle Ages referred to "cobalos" as an evil spirit that haunted mines and caused trouble to the miners. Subsequently the German worms "Kobold," meaning goblin, came to be applied to any baffling mineral and particularly to minerals that resembled ores but failed to yield metal when smelted. Even to-day there is something of an air of mystery about cobalt, and a medieval cloak of secrecy still surrounds many of the metallurgical processes employed in its production. "Zaffre" was mentioned about the middle of the sixteenth century by Biringuccio, and in 1735 the metal war, first prepared by G. Brandt. To preparation of cobalt compounds, however, must have been carried on in at least a small way ever since the opening of the silver-cobalt deposits of Schneeberg in 1470. By 1790 there were 25 works engaged in the industry, rust of them located in Saxony, but the total output of these works probably did not exceed 300 tone of cobalt annually, mostly in the fore of smalt. The smalt which contained approximately 6 per cent cobalt was sold in Venice in 1520 at about 16 cents a pound. A few refineries in Holland supplied the Irish linen trade, contributed a farce amount to the Dutch linen industries, and alto provided smaller quantities for the manufactuer of litmus in Holland. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted experiments on electrowinning of neodymium metal by using a molten-metal cathode at 650° C and an electrolyte of 50 mol pct NdCl3 (neodymium chloride) and 50 mol pct KCI (potassium chloride). The molten-metal cathodes were alloys of magnesium and zinc or magnesium and cadmium. Current efficiencies were 90 pct with a Mg-Zn cathode and 80 pct with a Mg-Cd cathode; The Mg-Cd cathode was easily separated from the electrolyte. In contrast, the Mg-Zn cathode tended to mix with the electrolyte, making separation difficult. The cathode metals were separated from the neodymium by distillation at 1,100° C under a vacuum of 10-3 torr. Neodymium metal of 99.9+ purity was recovered from the Mg-Cd alloy cathode after 30 min distillation time. The neodymium recovered from the Mg-Zn system contained almost 2 pct Zn after vacuum distillation. Continuous operation using the Mg-Cd alloy cathode was demonstrated.

The coal-mining districts of Washington are mainly situated west of the Cascade Mountains. The eastern boundaries of Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, King, Pierce, and Lewis Counties, shown in Figure 1, form the backbone of the mountain range. The mines are on the foothills of the slope and extend to the shores of Puget Sound in the central and northern portions. The subbituminous fields of Lewis, Thurston, and Cowlitz Counties extend into the valleys west of the mountains. The Roslyn field, a small but important area, Lies on the eastern slope of the Cascade Range. If western Washington is divided into three areas from north to south the bituminous coal fields and most of the active mining operations will be found largely in the central area. In the southern portion there are large areas of subbituminous coals of varying quality extending from Centralia to the Columbia River. In the northern portion, mining is at present practically restricted to one mine which is working a subbituminous bed near the city of Bellingham.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on various technologies to recover alumina from domestic resources for feedstock to existing aluminum smelting capacity as a means to reduce dependence on imported bauxite, which represents 93 pct of U.S. aluminum requirements. One of the more promising technologies being investigated is the hydrochloric acid leaching of kaolinitic clay. In the hydrochloric acid leaching technology, alumina is recovered from iron-free aluminum chloride leach liquor and separated from impurity elements by sparging the liquor with HC1 gas to crystallize aluminum chloride hexahydrate (ACH). A large-scale crystallizer with a 336-gallon usable volume was constructed and operated to obtain engineering and design data for potential scale up and to demonstrate the ability of the technology to produce specification grade alumina. Test campaigns involving about 1,400 hours of operation were completed. ACH meeting all chemical purity requirements could not be produced by a single crystallization, but was produced by recrystallizing the product from the calcined kaolin clay leach liquor. Product crystals with a size distribution of more than 80 pct plus 100 mesh and 65 pct plus 65 mesh were made at a rate of 10 pounds of ACH/(hr)(ft3). The zirconium tube heat exchanger used to maintain constant process temperature operated with an over-all heat transfer coefficient of 420 to 500 BTU/(hr)(ft2)(°F).

"Belt and shaker conveyors, used singly or as combined units, have for many years been an integral part of many coal-mine haulage systems. The belt conveyor has also been used extensively as a main haulage unit in open-pit iron-ore mines of the Lake Superior district, particularly on the Mesabi Range. Few underground metal mines, however, either in the ferrous or non-ferrous branches of the mining industry, use the conveyors exclusively or even extensively for underground haulage. At present, only five iron-ore mines in the entire Lake Superior district have belt- or shaker-conveyor installations of any significant size. Of these mines, three are in the Crystal Falls-Iron River district of Michigan on the Menominee Range, one is on the Marquette Range near Ishpeming, Mich., and one is on the Mesabi Range near Keewatin, Minn.Results of the studies of tackless haulage in the Lake Superior district will not permit the establishment of any formula to prove or disprove the advantages of belt or shaker systems at all underground mines. The studies do show that trackless haulage can be used to advantage where the proper conditions exist. Advantages are particularly apparent when development can be planned sufficiently in advance of exploitation to permit installation of belts or shakers as part of the development program and where the systems are extended to include haulage in stopes as well as main entries.During the winter of 1947-48, the Bureau undertook a study of all of the underground ore conveying systems known to be in operation in the Lake Superior district for the purpose of making available to the entire mining industry the technologic data developed in the area. Because conditions that led to the installation of the belt and shaker conveying systems were often a function of the character of the deposit or the method of mining, a brief description of those conditions is included in this report.After a preliminary investigation into the extent to which trackless conveyors were employed in the district, it was found that a detailed study at five bites would result in fair appraisal of that method of haulage in the underground iron-ore mines.Each of the five significant installations is described separately in this report. In one instance, however, company policy does not permit identification of the mine wherein the conveying is done. In that instance the operation is designated as mine ""A"".Unless otherwise specified, all tonnage figures quoted herein are gross.The cooperation of officials of all of the companies operating underground mines in the Lake Superior district permitted successful completion of preliminary studies of mining practices and conveying systems.Special acknowledgment is made to R. D. Satterley, general superintendent, and to operating staffs of the Sherwood and Morris mines of the Inland Steel Co. The assistance given by W. D. In a Bureau of Mines study two-dimensional mathematical equations were solved that describe the transient thermal response of a rock dust particle in a cloud of similar particles in a gas flame's preheat zone subject to a radiant field from the approaching flame. The description includes both radiant energy absorbed and emitted by the particle and thermal conduction inside the particle and into the surrounding gas environment moving relative to the particle. Two situations were studied; in one the radiant energy incident on the particle is converted to thermal energy at the particle surface, and in the other the radiant energy is converted to thermal energy uniformly over the volume of the particle. The result of the study showed that for a 10-µm-radius particle, a 200-mg 1-1 loading density, and a flame approach velocity of 30 m sec-1, the particle temperature rise was twice that previously calculated by Singer and Cook based on the model of Essenhigh and Csaba. It was further established that under the conditions examined a rock dust particle temperature never increases more than about 200 K before crossing the flame front.

"INTRODUCTION Many ore deposits were discovered in the Wallapai Mining District, which covers the Cerbat Range in Mohave County, Ariz., during the early period of mining there from about 1865 to the 1890's. A considerable amount of production was obtained from shallow lead carbonate ores that carried considerable gold and silver.Mining was revived in 1906 and again during the First World War, and soma of the mines were deepened into the underlying sulfide zone. Substantial quantities of metal were recovered from two mines, the Golconda and the Tennessee-Schuylkill, that were, developed to depths of 1,600 and 1,400 feet, respectively. The Golconda is credited with $6,500,000 gross productions. 2/ This mine was not operated after 1917. The Tennessee-Schuylkill is still operating after a yield of about 300,000 tons of ore that averaged 4.33 percent lead and 7.74 percent zinc and contained an appreciable amount of gold and silver.Many of the old mines were reopened in 1942 or 1943 under the stimulus of premium prices for lead and zinc. A large proportion of this work was finished with loans from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. It was believed that a good deal of lead and zinc could be recovered from the mines if a custom mill for concentration of the ores was available locally."

The creeks draining Cape Mountain, on the western tip of Seward Peninsula, Alaska, comprise the Cape Mountain tin-placer district. Because of the war-caused shortage of tin, the Bureau of Mines in 1943 conducted a churn-drill placer reconnaissance to explore the district. Favorable indications were found, and plans were made for further investigation of the deposits; the plans were abandoned when tin again became plentiful. In July 1951 the Zenda Gold Mining Co. was granted a Defense Minerals Administration (Defense Minerals Exploration Administration after October 1951) loan to continue exploration of the more favorable areas indicated by results of the Bureau's investigation. Equipment was moved to the area in the fall and winter of 1951-52. During the 1952 field season, 209 churn-drill holes totaling 7,521 linear feet and 10 test shafts totaling 96 linear feet were sunk on the Cape Creek drainage. Work was resumed in 1953, when 56 churn-drill holes totaling 3,157 linear feet were drilled on Boulder Creek. The company planned to drill Goodwin Gulch and Goodwin Creek, but no further work was done owing to lack of capital.

Small batches of fluorspar flotation concentrates were made into nodules and pellets on a laboratory scale. Several of these were rated acceptable by laboratory evaluation methods. The most satisfactory pellets were produced by mixing fluorspar with about 12.5 percent of water, by weight, and 4 percent of organic binders. These binders) for the most part) originated from petroleum and wood-pulp industries. They were generally difficult to handle and were not easily incorporated with the fluorspars tested. Most of them seemed to have an aversion for damp fluorspar and had to be forcibly mixed with the fluorspar; which was then formed into pellets by pressure. Substitution of fuel oil in varying amounts in the binders enhanced the mixing and penetrating qualities of these binders but at the same tire tended to make the pellets more porous. Tall oils performed the same function to a lesser degree and usually decreased the water absorbency of the finished pellets. Heat-treating temperatures to set up these binders were moderate -about 5000 F. for 30 to 50 minutes was usually enough for both drying and heat treating. Nodules made with 1-1/2 to 2 percent of bentonite as a binder were easily mixed and formed. They required a high degree of heat (about 1,500° F.) to develop their strength and were quite water-absorbent when finished. Two fluorspars were examined for weight and fluorite loss after heat treatment at similar temperatures. Both showed a definite wej.ght and analytical loss of fluorite. Bentonite was used also as a binder to successfully nodulize finely ground oxides of iron, manganese, and nickel.

The aim of the present study was to determine the thermal oxidative behavior of materials used in coal mines, with emphasis on the type and relative concentration of the products, in particular the toxic species formed. To supplement this work and to gain understanding as to the type of products possibly formed and also to assess the limitations and advantages of the various analytical methods used a literature survey of the past investigations performed on the compositions of direct interest to the subject program was conducted. The compositions thus covered were cellulose, polyvinyl chloride, neoprene, urethanes, polyamides, polyesters, polyethylene, epoxy, phenoxy, urea-formaldehyde and melamine formaldehyde resins. The results of this review are compiled in the Appendix. The experimental work consisted of thermal oxidative degradation of 36 materials and 4 composites using a stagnation burner apparatus developed in these laboratories which affords a dynamic system approximating somewhat the conditions encountered in underground coal mines. This technique as employed during this program gave only the relative product concentration at specific periods of the decomposition process, The advantage of this approach is that in this manner screening of materials can be accomplished in conjunction with some assessment of the decomposition rate as influenced by temperature and material composition. Limited static tests were performed using a sealed tube method. The materials studied were grouped according to their compositions. The following were the main groups: (a) polyvinyl chloride-containing materials, (b) neoprene compositions, (c) rigid foams (urethanes, isocyanates), (d) miscellaneous materials (including jute, fiberglass, polyethylene and some articles of unknown composition), (e) coal and fluids (phosphate esters, organic esters, oil-water emulsions), and finally (J) composites. The latter comprised a mixture of a phosphate ester fluid with (a) coal, (b) a representative polyvinyl chloride sample, and (c) a neoprene type composition.
