The specific objective of this investigation was to determine the compressibility factors for helium and carbon dioxide mixtures at -10° and -20° C and pressures to 1,000 psia. A Burnett apparatus was used. Data from the experiments were treated by the method of Barieau and Dalton. Tables of compressibility factors and approximations of the virial coefficients are presented for 10 binary mixtures as well as for helium and carbon dioxide. The results follow the same trend as data previously reported.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the caustic extraction of alumina and soda from retorted dawsonite-bearing oil shale, as part of a program to devise technology for treating alternative domestic sources of alumina for the production of aluminum metal. Colorado oil shale yielding 13 pct oil (35 gal/ton) and containing 12 wt-pct dawsonite (representing about 4 pct extractable alumina) was retorted to obtain oil-free (spent) shale Spent shale was leached with dilute NaOH to determine the effect of particle size, retorting temperature, leaching variables, and storage conditions on extraction of alumina and soda and dissolution of impurities. Maximum alumina and soda extractions were obtained by promptly leaching minus 28-mesh spent shale, obtained by retorting raw shale at about 5000 C, with 0.5N NaOH. Under these conditions, dissolution of impurities such as Ca, Fe, Ti, and P was low. Leaching tests were made on spent shale stored for periods of up to 30 days at 0° to 42° C and at 0 to 100 pct relative humidity (RH). These tests indicated that significant reductions in alumina extraction would occur if spent shale were stored in ambient Colorado air under naturally fluctuating temperature and humidity.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to develop a standard fire test for 5-gal containers used for storing combustible fluids in underground coal mines. A standard test method was developed which evaluates the performance of the container in a 4-min tray fire. Bureau investigators used the standard test method to evaluate several types of closed 5-gal plastic and metal cans in outdoor tests. Each can tested contained 1 gal of nonfire-resistant (NFR) hydraulic oil. A container failed the test if it lost its contents in any of seven trials. Contents spilled either as a result of thermal rupture or melting. Fewer than 10 pct of the metal containers failed this criterion, but all the plastic containers failed. The metal container failures were usual-ly due to tipping over during pressure relief, which spilled the NFR oil. Replacing the NFR oil in the container with kerosene resulted in failure of more than 30 pct of the metal containers. The standard tests and preliminary tests showed that plastic containers are not equivalent to metal containers in their ability to contain combustibles such as lubricants and greases in a fire. For solvents and lubricants more volatile than NFR hydraulic oil, approved metal safety containers are recommended.

With the increased use of mechanized equipment in mining bituminous coal, production panels are mined out rapidly. To keep current with the rapid completion of production panels, development work must be speeded up also. Although the same type of equipment usually is employed in development as in production places in the same mine, past output per man for development usually was less than from production panels. A study of development practices in 14 mines reveals a tendency toward equalization of the output per man between development and production.

As part of the Bureau of Mines effort to establish a comprehensive subsidence data base for subsidence technology development, subsidence and related data are being compiled for various mining, geological, and environmental situations. This publication presents data for a longwall mining operation in the Northern Appalachian Coal Region. Vertical displacements and relative face positions are tabulated for 110 subsidence monuments. Measurements were taken twelve times during the eight months it took to mine the panel. Brief physiographic and geological descriptions of the mining site are presented along with a general account of the mining and subsidence monitoring methods.

The wettability of petroleum reservoir materials by water and crude oil has been recognized as an important factor in determining waterflood behavior. The problem of simulating and studying reservoir conditions and characteristics, to produce laboratory results congruous with field experience, has been examined by many methods. (1, 2, 3, 4).4/ The most generally accepted approach to this problem is determining wettability of the porous medium by imbibition methods; or, after solvent extraction, predetermining the wettability of the samples by coating the surface of the medium to render it preferentially oil-or water-wet (3, 5). The emphasis of wettability studies has been placed on the characteristics of the reservoir materials with little consideration being given to the fluids themselves. Therefore, the wetting tendencies of crude oils have been investigated by a recently developed method (6). Imbibition and the more general phenomena of capillary pressure are the most direct ways to measure wettability. The simplest type of capillary pressure observations involves the use of an interfacial-tension capillarimeter, which does not produce as separate values either interfacial tension or contact angle. Actually, these quantities do not have independent significance in reservoir engineering, and the property of wettability they are intended to evaluate is given, immediately by capillarimetric measurements.

With the ever-increasing demand for energy in all forms, electrical energy generated from geothermal resources could become an important energy source in the next few decades. Geothermal fluids, which contain appreciable quantities of dissolved salts and gases, are generally corrosive to materials of construction. Since data on corrosion of materials in geothermal brines is limited, the literature was surveyed through February 1972 to obtain a compilation of information on corrosion resistance of aluminum and its alloys, copper and copper-base alloys, carbon steel and cast iron, stainless steels, chromium-iron alloys, nickel-and cobalt-base alloys, and titanium in heated brines including sea water.

Monazite sand is the only commercial source of cerium, other rare-earth metals and thorium. Although used in rather small quantities, it is essential to many industries. The United Unites is entirely dependent upon British India and Brazil for its supplies. Monazite sand or sand imported under the tariff classification for monazite was shipped to the United States in greater quantities, in 1940 than ever before. About 75 percent of our imports was from British India and most of the remainder from Brazil. If need be, Brazilian production can be expanded to supply all of our essential requirements, and the theater of war expands in the Pacific Brazil may supersede India as the principal source. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES The mineral monazite is generally honey yellow or may vary from greenish yellow to clove brown. To say that the treatment and handling of the "fines" is the most difficult phase of coal preparation is probably an understatement of facts. It is the fine sizes from about 1/16-inch to 0 that are mainly responsible for the inescapable sludge and slurry problems at plants using wet methods of preparation. Sludge and slurry are a problem from the standpoints of both cleaning and dewatering. They cannot be cleaned satisfactorily by "gravity" methods, which are used so extensively on coarser Sizes, due to the fact that fine sizes, particularly from 65-mesh to 0, do not follow the same laws of settling as do the coarser sizes. Although fine sizes are cleaned more successfully on wet-wash tables than in jigs, even tables as usually operated in coal-preparation plants fail on sizes below 100-mesh. As to other phases of the, sludge and slurry problem, wet coal preparation plants are almost universally beset with troubles in connection with the recovery and dewatering of the fine sizes from about 14-or 20-mesh to 0. The sizes finer than 100-mesh further complicate the problems in a wet preparation plant by their tendency to stay in suspension and build up a troublesome load of solids in the circulating water. In order to prevent too much trouble from this source, it is, customary at most plants to bleed a fair-sized stream out of the circulating system continuously and replace it by addition of fresh make-up water. The slurry water withdrawn from the circuit is usually run to waste, in which case it carries with it a considerable amount of fine coal, thus increasing the "washer loss." Another evil results from wasted slurry water in that quite often it finds its way into creeks and larger streams, creating stream-pollution problems.

The rapid increase in the mmber of automobiles during the last 25 years has resulted in the insistent and growing demand for better roads of more permanent construction. Some form of State license for the operation of automobiles has been in effect almost from the time of the first "self-propelled" vehicle, and some part of the revenue derived from the sale of these licenses has been applied to the maintenance and construction of roads. However, to obtain funds with which to build their present highway systems, the individual States have resorted to the taxation of gasoline. The first State to adopt a gasoline tax was Oregon, the law becoming effective February 25, 1919. By 1928, all of the States except two had levied taxes on gasoline at rates varying from 2 to 5 cents per gallon. New York and Massachusetts passed gasoline tax laws which became effective in 1929. Regulations governing the quality and the methods of handling gasoline and other petroleum products sold in the States have also been adopted by 29 States; many of these laws antedate the adoption of a gasoline tax. The variations in motor fuel speci- fications and methods of test have been pronounced in the several States. The Bureau of Mines, in making certain technical studies of the rasolines marketed throughout the United States, the results of which are reported in its semiannual motor gasoline surveys and other reports, has had occasion to obtain and compile all of the present (April 1, 1931) tax and pection laws of the several States which relate to motor fuel and other petroleum products. To facilitate the use of this material and to obviate the need in most cases of reading the complete text of the laws as published by the States, the pertinent information was arranged in tabular form for cly reference. 3 Although digests of States gasoline tax laws' are available and copies of the complete laws can be obtained from the State agancies in charge of the enforcement of gasoline tax and inspection laws, it is believed that

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the acid resistance of ceramic materials to identify construction materials for emerging technology in chemical and metallurgical processes. Eight commercial ceramic materials, were evaluated: two red shale, two fireclay, one silicon carbide, one silica, one carbon, and one high-alumina. Samples were exposed to 10 wt pct H2S04 at 50° C and 10, 30, 50, 70, and 90 wt pct H2S04 at 90° C for time periods of 110 days. Statistically significant changes in cold crushing strength were observed in the silicon carbide and car-bon materials. Weight changes and the leach rate of Al, Ca. Fe. K, Mg, Na. Si, and Ti were also monitored. The most severe corrosion conditions were at 90° C and 30 to 50 wt pct H2S04 for the acidproof and at 10 wt pct H2S04 for the acid-resistant materials. The silica and the high-alumina materials were the most acid-resistant, followed by the higher density red shale and fireclay.

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. In the course of investigations made by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Trent Process Corporation, into the properties of mixtures of oil and coal, a comparative study was ma.de of the 'behavior of these mixtures and their cons ti tuents on destructive distillation. Mixtures of a petroleum oil and bitminous coal were first distilled under carefully controlled conditions, and then charges of the eame oil and coal were distilled separately under similar conditions. The quantity and quality of the distillation products were determined, and. resul. ts were compared. This comparison furnished a basis tor judging whether grea, ... er values in products can be obtained by distillation of oil and coal in mixtures than· b:, their separate distillation. In making the mixtures, the method used in t~e Trent process for cleaning coal was followed. The paste or plastic emulsion of oil and coal obtained is called "amalgam".••• When finely pulverized wet coal is mixed with approximately one-third its weight of. oil and agitated with a large excass of waj;er, the coal and oil agglomer-. ate to form a paste or amalgam. A large portion of the extraneous ash original.17 in the coal remains suspended in the water, with which it can be decanted from the amalgam. Ir the latter is now thoroughly drained and kneaded after the manner ot working butter, most of the excess water enclosed can be removed. This, .in brief, constitutes the Trent process for cleaning coal, The effectiveness of the process for cleaning coal has been studied••••. by the Bureau, and the results of the study show, in general, a high ash reduction an:l good recovery of combus ti bl e f'rom coals of medi ,mi and hi~ rg,nk. With coals of tht lowest rank, such as li@!Rlites, the process is only moderately auccessf'ul, owing to the difficulty attending the preparation of coherent amalgams, Oil losses to wate~ and refuse are small, and apparently it would be practical to rotate the same oil in the cleaning process if some efficient method were devised for recovering it from the amalgam, so a distillation process naturally suggested itself.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a hydrometallurgical procedure to recover Co, Ni, and Cu from an electrolytic zinc industrial copper filter cake. The copper filter cake is presently unmarketable or of low value because economic and environmentally acceptable processing technology is lacking. Research by the Bureau of Mines has developed a multistage process for recovering or recycling over 93 pct of the Zn, Cd, Cu, Co, and Ni from this material. The stages involved are (1) wet sizing, (2) H2S04 leaching of undersized material, (3) H2S04-Mn02 leaching of H2S04 leach residue, (4) selective precipitation of As, Cu, and Co-Ni products, and (5) precipitation of manganese for recycling to the leach circuit. The final process residue is only 1.6 wt-pct of the initial cake and consists of lead sulfate.

Consumption and intensity of use trends for twelve metals, by industrial end use, were estimated for 1972 through 198Z. The trends were then forecast through 1993 using standard statistical methods. The intensity of use measure selected is the quantity of metal consumed per constant dollar output of a specific industrial sector. The metals studied were aluminum, chromium, cobalt, copper, lead, manganese, nickel, the platinum-group metals, tin, titanium, tungsten, and zinc. Average annual growth rates for the following four of the twelve metal increased from 1972-82 as follows: aluminum, 1.00 percent; platinum-group metals (consisting of platinum, palladium, and iridium), 8.83 percent; titanium, 7.82 percent; and tungsten, 6.09 percent. Consumption. for the remaining eight metals decreased at average annual rates ranging from 0.58 percent (copper) to 5.37 percent (manganese).

This paper describes the methods and equipment used by the Utah Copper Co. in constructing a vehicular tunnel at Bingham Canyon, Utah, Completion and use of this tunnel for vehicular and pedestrian traffic permitted abandonment of the long-used county highway connecting Bingham and Copperfield. Expanding- operations of the Utah Copper open-cut mine, necessitated construction of a vehicular route away from the ore body. The site Of the tunnel is well beyond ultimate nit slopes and future mining operations. The tunnel not only diverts vehicular and pedestrian traffic is but also carrier, creek water, copper water, sewage, pipe lines, and. power and telephone cables between the two communities. The dimensions of the tunnel permit one-way traffic only. Traffic-control lights have been installed. Owing to the possibility of accumulation of carbon monoxide gas from automobile exhausts, automatic gas detectors has been installed at various stations. These detectors control the operation of a large exhaust fan situated at the upper portal of the tunnel.

In 1969, the number of fatal injuries in the coal mining industry was lower than in any previous year and the number of nonfatal injuries was lower than in any preceding year except 1968. Fatal injuries in 1969 totaled 203 with frequency rates of 0.85 per million man-hours of worktime and 0.36 per million tons of coal These rates were new annual lows. Nonfatal injuries totaled 9,917 with frequency rates of 41.76 per million man-hours and 17.42 per million tons. The severity rate for fatal and nonfatal injuries combined was 7,359 days lost or charged per million man-hours. The average severity was 173 days lost or charged per injury. These statistics represent the injury experience of an average of 133,302 employees per day working an average of 225 days in 5,955 coal mines for a total of 237-5 million man-hours worked and a coal output of 565 2 million tons
