It is generally recognized that if the lose and contamination of the fluid content of a core specimen from an oil- and gas-bearing formation in a well were eliminated, the value of core analysis would be increased greatly. In an effort to obtain uncontaminated cores, extensive field tests were carried out in the Mercy field, San Jacinto County, Tex., with the Carter pressure core barrel and an oil-base drilling fluid having very low rates of filtration as measured by the standard A.P.I. drilling-fluid filter teat. A tracer was added to the drilling fluid filter test. A tracer was added to the drilling fluid to provide a means for quantitatively measuring the volume of oil filtrate in the cores. Unfortunately, as stated in the report on the Mercy tests, very little oil nand was penetrated in coring the well; and because the performance of the pressure core barrel was not entirely satisfactory, the tests did not provide a complete answer to the question: Does a filtrate from an oil-base drilling fluid enter cores., and how does it affect the results of the core analyses?

The method for determining oil and water saturations described herein has been used successfully for several years in the core laboratories of the Bureau of Mines. The apparatus constructed according to the original specifications has proved very satisfactory; in fact, it has been widely adopted by core laboratories throughout the petroleum industry. The writers have found that the method gives reproducible results, the degree of accuracy depending largely on the attention to details given by the operator. The relative importance of these details of procedure and the design of the apparatus are discussed in this report. In September 1940, the Bureau of Mines published a report describing a method used in its laboratories for the determination of the water content of oil-field cores. The procedure was essentially the same as that adopted by the American Society for Testing Materials for the determination of the water content of petroleum products, although the apparatus and technique were altered slightly to increase the precision of the method and to adapt it to the characteristics of the material to be tested. The report also contained a description of the method used at that time in the Bureau’s core laboratories for measuring the oil content of a core, utilizing the sample on which the water-saturation determination had been made. The procedure involved the transfer of the weighed sample, from which the water had been distilled and measured, to a Soxhlet extractor and the removal of the remaining oil by means of a suitable solvent. Soon after the report was published, the water-determination apparatus described therein was modified so that both the oil and water contents of a core sample could be determined simultaneously. This method, which has been described by Yuster, is now widely used throughout the industry.

"The National Safety Competition covering the calendar year 1934 was the tenth yearly safety contest conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines. Participating in the competition were 334 mines and quarries in 38 States. Five mining or quarrying companies, each the leader in its group for having established the best safety record during the year, were awarded the national safety trophies ""Sentinels of Safety.""Since these annual contests were begun 10 years ago by the United States Bureau of Mines the scope of the competition has been broadened materially, both as to the number of plants participating and as to the number of man-hours of exposure to accident hazards. Moreover, marked progress in the prevention of accidents has been achieved, as is indicated by an almost constant downward course in toe accident-frequency rates for the contest group as a whole during the past 10 years. On the other hand, the accident-severity rates for the group showed an upward trend during the first part of the decade and a downward trend during the latter part of the period except in 1930 and 1934; in each of those years a disastrous explosion with abnormally heavy loss of life occurred at the property of one of the participating companies.Because of the abnormal nature of the major disaster in a bituminous-coal mine in 1930 and 1934 the accident-severity rates for the bituminous group for those years are not strictly comparable with the rates for other years. The rates for bituminous mines for 1934 in the present report have therefore been computed on two bases; first, to exclude the record of the company that suffered the disastrous explosion and, second, to include the record of this company. The first rate represents the normal experience of the bituminous coal companies unaffected by the disaster and is therefore more indicative of the real trend of the accident rates for this class of mines from year to year. The latter rate shows the actual experience of all bituminous mines in 1934. The report of the competition of 1930 likewise showed the rates for the bituminous group as computed both with and without the disaster that occurred that year.The National Safety Competition is conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines in the interest of safety in the mining and quarrying industries. This object is accomplished directly through the efforts of the competing companies and their employees to win first place in the competition and thereupon receive well-merited and national recognition for their achievement. Indirectly the purpose of the contest is accomplished through studies by the Bureau of Mines of the facts contained in the accident reports which the competing companies furnish to the Bureau to enable the Bureau to compute the accident rates that are the basis for determining the winners of the contest."

This paper summarizes a survey of fine-grinding practice in ore-concentrating plants throughout the United States, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and Cuba as reported in the Bureau of Mines Information Circulars on milling methods. The survey covers 49 concentrators, which have a combined capacity of over 160,000 tons per day. In these plants 470 ball, rod, and pebble mills prepare material for flotation, gravity concentration, amalgamation, cyanidation, and air separation. The ores are those of gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, feldspar, and pyrite. The metallurgy is that of the period 1928-32. Of these 49 concentrators, 36 are in the United States. They can treat 134,400 tons per day, and they have 326 fine-grinding mills. In the United States there are about 100 active or temporarily idle concentrators, exclusive of the many plants in the Tri-State zinc district, the washeries of the Lake Superior iron ranges and the Florida phosphate area, and small gold and silver concentrators. These 100 plants have an estimated capacity of 290,000 tons per day and employ about 650 ball, rod, and pebble mills. Consequently, since this paper covers about half of the production of this country it may be considered as particularly representative of fine grinding in ore mills in the United States.

"The El Dorado copper mine is situated in the foothill copper-zinc belt of California, which traverses the western slope of the Sierra Nevada with unusual persistence from Butte County to Kern County, a distance of more than 300 miles. Although this area contains such important past producers as the Penn mine, Union, and others, a great part of the current production has been derived from smaller properties, which depend largely on premium metal prices for economical operation. The El Dorado mine is in the latter group, which constitutes an important source of metal in a national emergency.Exploration by the Bureau of Mines by means of eight diamond-drill holes Indicated narrow, intermittent lenses of copper ore along structures boo feet in length. The copper occurs in massive sulfides composed of chalcopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and minor quantities of bernite. The sulfides have evidently replaced tuffs, which are interbedded with the Mariposa slates and shales.H. A. Weiler and Hal T. Hall, owners of the El Dorado copper property, requested an examination by the Bureau during the latter part of 1914. In December of that year an engineer of the Bureau of Mines visited the mine and recommended the project work undertaken. The purpose was to aid the owners in bringing the property into production of copper and zinc, which at that time was critically essential to the war industries.Complete factual data obtained by the exploration are embodied in this report.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G, Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.Acknowledgment is made to A. O. Definite progress has been made in accident prevention in Illinois during the past few years; the State Department of Mines and Minerals is receiving excellent cooperation from coal companies and employees, the companies are making greater effort to maintain their mines in good condi- tion, and the employees are eliminating more unsafe practices. As a result, some coal companies have made commendable safety records that prove that coal can be mined with a comparatively low accident rate. However, there is need for further improvement, as the accident rate of the State as a whole is much higher than it should be. During the 55-year period 1882-1936, in- clusive, reports of the State Department of Mines and Minerals show a total of 7,005 (an average of 127.36 per year) men killed in and around the coal mines. Of this number, 6,425 (91.7 percent) were killed underground, 346 (4.9 percent) in the shaft, and 234 (3.3 percent) on the surface. Of the fatalities underground, 3,300 (51.3 percent) were killed by falls of roof, sides, or face coal, 1,167 (18.1 percent) by haulage, 639 (9.9 percent) by handling explosives, 579 (9 percent) by explosions, 151 (2.3 percent) by electricity, and 589 (9.1 percent) by other means. Of the fatalities in the shaft, 171 men (46.5 percent) were killed by falling down the shaft, 14 (41.6 percent) by the cage, and 31 (8.9 percent) otherwise. On the surface, 113 (48.2 percent) of the fatalities were due to railroad cars, 51 (21.7 percent) to machinery, and 70 (29.9 percent) to other causes. The fact that 7,005 lives (an average of 127.36 per year) were lost during 1882-1936 is sufficient evidence that in the past too little interest has been taken in safety by either the management or workers. A realization of this deplorable loss of life should act as an incentive to the industry to make greater effort to prevent accidents in the future. After an accident occurs, the facts pertaining to it become history, and anything that may be done afterward cannot change in any way the damage that has already been done, such as loss of life, personal injury, and destruction of property. The main benefit that can be derived from an acci- dent is that suitable procedure may be adopted and some lesson may be learned to aid in preventing a similar accident in the future. Information relative to the explosibility of acetylene at elevated pressures and means of handling acetylene safely under these conditions is of considerable interest at present. American practice limits the pressure at which acetylene may be generated and distributed to poiIits of' use. The pressure in portable acetylene generators is 15 pounds per square inch gage. Tests made by the Bureau of Mines have shown that 15 pounds per square inch gage is too high to prevent explosiofiS of gaseous acetylene in the absence of air; in fact, dry acetylene gai can be exploded at pressures greater than 5.9 pounds per square inch gage. The Bureau has been interested in the explosibility of acetylene for many years because of its continued: use for illumination in many metal mines and its general use in cutting 1illd~--eldifigoperations in the mining maus-try.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Spokane Research Laboratory, studied technology and methods that could reduce accidents involving surface mining equipment that collides with other vehicles or workers, or drives over an unseen road edge. These accidents are partially attributed to the lack of full visibility around these large pieces of equipment. Blind areas can be extensive and this report presents plots of blind areas for five pieces of surface mining equipment. Several technologies designed for detecting obstacles in blind areas and providing a warning to the operator were evaluated on off-highway dump trucks. These proximity warning systems included radar, sonar, GPS, radio transceiver tags, and combinations of radar and cameras. A summary of test results is presented in this report, along with guidance on effective proximity warning technology, installation and maintenance considerations, and recommendations for effective implementation. This study found several commercially available systems that could effectively warn an equipment operator of an impending collision. Several new technologies also show promise for reducing these accidents. In most applications, it is recommended that sensor-based systems be combined with video cameras to provide important alarming functions along with an actual view of the blind area.

Nickel having a purity of more than 99.99 percent with reference to metallic impurities was electrodeposited at the Rolla Metallurgy Research Center of the Federal Bureau of Mines. The production of high-purity nickel is in keeping with the current trend in technologies for producing metals with lower and lower percentages of impurities. To understand more fully the role to be played by nickel by itself and as a component in many alloys, the element must be in a state of high purity. Procedures are outlined for purifying nickel solutions by precipitating and filtering off impurities. Details are given for using the purified solutions as electrolytes in depositing high-purity nickel. The elecneleposited nickel contained 0.0005 to 0.002 percent each of cobalt, copper, aid iron together with spectrographically detectable traces of aluminum, magnesium, and silicon. The deposits were smooth and dense; the crystalline structure was typical of an electrodeposited metal. Some preliminary experiments for purifying nickel solutions by liquid-liquid extraction are also described in this report. Tests of this type were limited since more encouraging results were obtained by other methods of purification.

The Bureau of Mines developed techniques for induction melting of titanium in a split, water-cooled copper crucible. Calcium fluoride, which was used as an inert slag cover during melting, formed an insulating layer of solid slag between the ingot and the crucible wall. This thin layer of slag effectively insulated the ingot from the crucible and prevented the molten metal from shorting across the slits between adjacent segments of the crucible. The technique provides a means of melting loose titanium sponge and scrap and eliminates the need for fabricating a consumable electrode. This report describes the equipment developed and compares ingots produced from two varieties of titanium sponge, from titanium scrap, and from previously melted titanium with ingots prepared by vacuum-arc melting and electroslag melting. A melting scheme was also proposed and evaluated whereby loose titanium sponge was consolidated into a first-melt ingot for vacuum-arc remelting.

As a means of investigating the distribution and variability of gold in ore from the Homestake mine, Lead, S. Dak., the Bureau of Mines performed a designed sampling experiment, and assay results were statistically interpreted. Fifty-six feet of diamond-drill core from five boreholes was sawed into l-inch-long cylinders, which were sampled randomly and were assayed. Analyses of variance of the assay results were used to compare and assess the different types of variation: within drill holes, among paired drill holes, among unpaired drill holes, and among furnace runs. The extreme variability in gold mineralization found is the natural variability on the smallest scale that can be detected by fire assay; most of the variability is associated with among-feet rather than within-feet sample intervals. Because of the extreme variability, one-half of the gold is in 3 percent of the samples.

"The smoke nuisance, like many other undesirable and longstanding features in our present civilization, is still with us. On reviewing the situation we are astonished to find no authentic record of a major smoke-abatement campaign that has succeeded in eliminating a smoke nuisance, in spite of the fact that the problem has been with us since the use of bituminous coal began. We might well ask ourselves where the trouble lies; is the problem impossible of solution? We can not blame the average citizen for harboring this thought as a conviction. He has been urged for so long but sees so little evidence of progress. He has repeatedly been assured by the scientist and the engineer in most convincing terms that smoke. is unnecessary, that it can be avoided; small wonder is it that he is beginning to distrust so-called authority on the subject.On the other hand, the scientist and engineer are entirely within their rights. We all know that even high-volatile coal can be and is now being burned with no visible smoke. We know that even small domestic heating furnaces, with favorable conditions and with proper care, can be fired by hand without producing much smoke. And we know that when such equipment is fitted with suitable stoking devices, little or no smoke results. What, then, is the answer?Perhaps we may learn something from a critical examination of a typical smoke-abatement problem. Probably one of the most enlightening campaigns that has been waged in the United States is that of Salt Lake City, Utah; therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the important aspects of this particular case."

Caesium, rubidium, and lithium are sometimes described as the minor or rarer alkali metals. They generally occur together in nature, although, lithium is distributed more widely and is far more abundant than either of the other two. The chemical, and even the physical, properties of these three elements can best be considered In conjunction with the more familiar members of the alkali group, sodium and potassium. The five elements lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, and caesium show an interesting gradation properties from member to member with the increase in atomic weights. All are silvery white and soft enough to be cut with a knife. They tarnish rapidly in air and decompose water at ordinary temperatures. The lowest temperature at which the action of the several metals on water can be de¬tected is -98°C. for sodium, -105°C, for potassium, 108°C. for rubidium, and -116°C. for caesium. New applications and concepts of solvent extraction as a unit operation in extractive metallurgy have been developed in the last decade. Wider use is being made of established solvent extraction techniques in processing spent nuclear fuel elements and in winning columbium-tantalum, hafnium-zirconium, thorium, tungsten, uranium, and vanadium. Commercial application has been extended to recovery of beryllium, boron, bromine, copper, molybdenum, phosphorus, rare-earth metals, and rhenium. Systems in use and proposed typically extract metals or salts as anion, cation, or neutral species from aqueous media by reaction with a recycleable organic reagent.

"Measurement of the size and elemental characteristics was performed on airborne coal mine dust samples collected by multi-stage cascade impactors as well as channel samples of the geologic materials. Size distributions were obtained using precise weighing techniques on the impactor substrates. Elemental analysis on the samples was performed by the proton-induced x-ray emission (PIXE) method, a rapid and non-destructive method of multi-element analysis.The various analyses were performed on 9 major and 21 trace elements. The results indicate the importance of intake air and shuttle car movements as sources of dust. The association of coal dust characteristics with channel samples was investigated using the coefficient of proportional similarity as a statistical measure. Results show a strong relationship between major elements and the geologic material being cut but a similar relationship between trace elements and geologic materials is not consistent.1. INTRODUCTIONThe most significant occupational disease in the coal industry is known ·as coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CW'P). While CW'P has existed for centuries, its mechanism of occurrence and association with coal dust has been well understood for only a few decades. In the 1930s, the significance of this disease led state and government officials in the USA to perform extensive epidemiological and environmental studies in the major coalfields. Study of these results plus later studies in the coal producing countries of Europe eventually led to the dust regulations that appear in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969.The impacts of the 1969 act were a productivity decline and increased production cost. Many analysts attributed this in large part to difficulties in complying with the new dust standards (Brezovic 1981). However, compliance was met in most continuous miner sections rather quickly. The remaining problem area is that of longwall mining where the procedures and layout of the minin~ system make it difficult to meet the standards."

A method was developed by the Bureau of Mines in the laboratory and in the field to relieve capillary waterblocks in gas wells. Impaired gas permeability was improved by this inexpensive chemical treatment which lowers the surface tension of the water held in the capillaries of the formation. Effectiveness of the alcohol-surfactant treatment was tested with a variety of chemicals and with sandstone cores cut from rocks having relatively low permeability. Field tests on 20 gas-producing and storage wells demonstrated the effectiveness and limitations of the method. The productive capacity of some wells was doubled by the treatment. The final test was evaluated by the neutron logging technique for measuring changes in apparent liquid saturation. Maximum apparent liquid saturation was reduced by 52 percent; gas production rate increased from 2.3 to 3.5 MMcfd (million cubic feet per day).

Mining began in Pend Oreille and Stevens Counties about 1885, Lead and zinc have been the principal products, and the area has supplied nearly all the output of these metals in the State. Fend Oreille County's output of lead and zinc from 1902 to 1956 was 110,700 and 229,600 tons, respectively. The Stevens County total was 54,100 tons of lead and 87,600 tons of zinc. Copper ore was produced mainly from the United Copper mine, Chewelah district, from 1912 to 1920; the principal gold mine was the First Thought, Orient district, which was active from 1904 to 1942. Approximately 225 mines and prospects produced; most of the ventures were on a small scale. The total value of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc produced from 1902 to 1956 was $75.2 million in Pend Oreille County and $39.4 million in Stevens County. INTRODUCTION In compiling the figures for this report, use was made of Bureau of Mines permanent records of nine production, the annual tabulations of producing mines, and the Minerals Yearbook. Requests to publish individual data, obtained from the annual production canvass, were made to the latest recorded operators of all mines in the area. Response to this request was good; therefore, it was possible to make the tables nearly complete. In a few instances the producer requested that the production data remain confidential, and in others it was not possible to reach the mine operator at his last known address. The district and county tables combine statistics for all mines, including those mines whose output could not be published separately.

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in research to assess the hazards associated with the handling, storage, and use of combustible gases, vapors, and. liquids encountered in mines and in industry. As a part of this general pro-gram, numerous limits of flammability and ignition temperatures are being investigated for a wide variety of combustible materials, and methods are being developed to minimize the explosion hazards of these combustibles. The Bureau receives numerous requests for information on the explosion hazards of specified combustible mixtures under various conditions of use. This information circular has been prepared to assist those who may have similar requests. Destined primarily for the layman with a limited technical knowledge of the subject, it considers rather briefly the numerous factors that enter into the general problem of gaseous explosions and their prevention.

Production of small tonnages of asbestos has been reported from 18 California counties; 16 additional counties have occurrences of asbestos. The counties in the northern part of California that have had a recorded production are: Alameda, Amador, Calaveras, Contra Costa, E1 Dorado, Napa, Nevada, Placer, Shasta, Siskiyou, Trinity, and Tuolumne. No deposit in the State has maintained consistent production. Serpentinized peridotites (potential chrysotile-bearing rocks) are widely distributed in the coast ranges, Klamath Mountains, and western foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

"PURPOSE OF REPORTFatalities from falls of roof and coal are responsible for the death of more than 1,000 miners annually in the bituminous coal mines of the United States or practically one—half of the total fatalities in and about these mines. The men are killed by falls singly or in small groups and little or no publicity is given these accidents as they lack the spectacular features of gas and dust explosions. As a result, the public and even the miners have the impression that accidents from falls of roof and coal are just one of the unavoidable hazards of the coal—mining industry. This belief is not true. Accidents caused by falls can be avoided largely by the application of sound engineering principles, by education, and by proper leadership in the industry, just as gas and dust explosions and accidents caused by explosives have been reduced in recent years.The necessity for studying falls of roof and coal becomes apparent by referring to the following data from a table by Adams and Chenoweth:3"
