During the spring and summer of 1946, the Bureau of Mines put down 8 churn-drill holes and 9 diamond-drill holes, totaling 3,535 feet of bore, at the Blewett zinc-lead deposit in Jo Daviess County, Ill. Attention of the Bureau of Mines was first directed to this deposit by the Illinois State Geological Survey, which had investigated the Blewett mine. In the opinion of the Survey and the Bureau of Mines, the record of production and results of drilling previously done on the property were considered sufficient justification for continuing investigation to the north and south along a projection of the trend. This report describes the work done by the Bureau on this, property and presents the data obtained.

The method of using large-diameter augers to recover coal was introduced to the mining industry about the end of World War II, and production of bituminous coal with augers has increased steadily to an estimated 7 million tons, or approximately 1.4 percent of the total mined in 1956. Although auger mining has proved to be a reliable and economical method of mining coal, a number of unfortunate fatal accidents have been experienced; consequently the need for these recommended safety standards is indicated for this comparatively new method of coal mining. As mining methods and equipment change from time to time and new hazards are introduced, these standards will be revised; therefore, questions or suggestions from the coal-mining industry will be welcomed and carefully considered.

THE Bureau of Mines was established in July 1910 to conduct research and to establish standards for mining equipment and practices which would conserve human life, natural resources, and property in the mineral industries. Several lists of equipment approved by the Bureau as permissible for use in gassy coal mines have been issued since then. The lists covering all approved equipment except breathing apparatus and explosives have born consolidated into two publications: Bulletin 343. Permissible Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953, and Information Circular 8220, Permissible Mina Equipment Approved By The Bureau of Mines During 1953-62. The, purpose of this publication is to supplement Bulletin 343 and Information Circular 8220 with a listing of permissible equipment approved during 1963 and 1964. PRODUCTION of bituminous coal and lignite increased substantially in 1963 compared with 1962 figures. The major items of production, consumption, exports, and productivity increased. However, certain key items declined. For the fourth year there was no upward trend in mechanization; the percentage of total tonnage mechanically loaded remained the same as in the 3 previous years and the percentage of total tonnage mechanically cleaned was smaller than in the previous year. Furthermore, the percentage of total production mined by stripping and by augers increased. Most significant was the continued decline in average value and employment. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1963--459 million tons-was 9 percent greater than the 422 million tons produced in 1962. Production was greater in 1963, largely because of expanded consumption by the electric utilities and an increase in exports.

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in a systematic evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases. These studies are designed to provide basic thermodynamic information of high accuracy, facilitating the theoretical study of flame and combustion phenomena. This report is the fourth of a series4/ presenting results of the study for particular fuel-oxidant systems. These calculations have as their objective the evaluation of the constant pressure flame temperatures of methane-air, propane-air, and ethylene-air mixtures for a range of pressures.

The Bureau of Mines derived information on the softening characteristics of both unfired and indurated iron ore pellets as measured by hot compression strength in a laboratory study. A surprisingly high hot strength (240 1b per ½ -inch spheroid) was developed by unfired magnetite pellets near 900° C; lesser maxima were developed by pellets made from hematite and specularite concentrates near 1,000° C. Those from goethite remained weak throughout the pre induration heating. Fully indurated commercial pellets retain a high resistance to softening when heated in air. On the contrary, in a hot reduing atmosphere their high cold crushing strength dissipates rapidly. At 1,000° C, for example, the average compression strength of seven different commercial pellets was 110 lb; at 1,100° C, the hot strength was only 60 lb. After a rather sharp initial drop, the loss of strength with increase of temperature was gradual. There was no sudden collapse, nor any significant difference, in behavior of commercial pellets whether made from magnetite or hematite concentrates.

The chemistry involved in the microbial dissolution of iron and copper from such sulfide minerals as pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, cove11ite, and bornite is described. The chemical criteria used to evaluate the activity of microorganisms on these minerals were changes in pH, ferric iron produced, and oxygen consumption. In a series of experiments in which a ferrous sulfate nutrient solution was percolated over small portions of the above-mentioned copper sulfide minerals for 56 days, the iron-oxidizing bacteria Ferrobaci11us ferrooxidans and Thiobaci11us ferrooxidans were capable of bringing about the dissolution of 23.7 percent of the copper from chalcocite, 56.3 percent of the copper from cove11ite, and 29.8 percent of the copper from bornite by the microbial production of ferric sulfate which reacted with these minerals. Laboratory tests have demonstrated that pure strains of the iron-oxidizing bacteria act as catalysts to the ferrous iron being oxidized by the Oxygen of a system containing pyrite and chalcopyrite. In a series of experiments during which nutrient solution was percolated over pyrite for 70 days, the ferric iron produced by the iron-oxidizing bacteria was 112 to 120 times greater than that produced atmospherically.

Bureau of Mines research was conducted to develop effective separation methods that might be used in exploiting substantial tonnages of complex barite-fluorspar ores in Arizona. The exploitable reserves now may be increased as recent batch and continuous flotation tests demonstrated that a complex barite?-fluorspar ore from the Red Chief deposit, Yuma County, Ariz., could be selectively treated to concurrently produce (1) fluorspar and (2) a barite byproduct of marketable grade. The sample contained 24.8 percent CaF2 and 24.3 percent BaS04. Processing comprised production of a fluorspar product containing 97 percent CaF2 with an 82 percent recovery, using a sodium fluoride-lignin sulfonate-fatty acid reagent combination. Concurrent retreatment of the fluorspar tailing, using sodium cetyl sulfate as a collector, yielded a barite product of 94 percent BaS04 grade with a 71-percent recovery. The products met specifications for acid-grade fluorspar and drilling mud-type barite.

The Bureau of Mines determined low-and high-temperature thermodynamic properties for anhydrous ferric sulfate and anhydrous indium sulfate. Low-temperature heat capacities were measured between 50° and 298° K, and enthalpy increments above 298° K were determined. The high-temperature measurements of Fe2(S04)3 extended to 900° K and those of In2(S04)3 to about 1,000° K. A minor transition was found for Fe2(S04)3 at 800° K, with a heat of transition of 540 cal/mole. Tabulations were made of the low-temperature heat capacities and the high-temperature enthalpy and entropy increments. The 298° K entropies derived from the low-temperature measurements were 67.6±0.S ca1/deg mole for ferric sulfate and 72.2±O.5 cal/deg mole for indium sulfate. High-temperature enthalpy increments were also given in equation form.

Rapid, sensitive, and precise methods of determing major, minor and trace constituents of oilfield brines are needed. Several methods have been developed or adapted by the Federal Bureau of Mines at the Petroleum Research Center, Bartlesville, Okla. The following methods are described in this report: Spectrophotometric and volumetric for iodides and bromides; potentiometric for pH, alkalinity, acidity, borate boron, total boron, and organic boron; gravimetric for potassium; disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) volumetric for total hardness, calcium, and magnesium; spectrophotometric for fluorides; and color comparison .for arsenic. Adequate sensitivity, precision, and accuracy were obtained for each method. The Bureau of Mines pioneered in research on the analysis of oilfield waters (2, 46, 47).6 However, several of these early procedures were quite time consuming. Also, they did not include methods for determining trace and minor constituents of brines.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unpre- cedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 400,00 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country's oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the be- ginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million bar- rels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but pro- duced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation's petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. ce World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum prod- ucts has become the order of the day every day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has been increased enough to meet domestic require- ments by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the over-all daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 50 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields - having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly or perhaps more rapidly than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each, were discovered and proved - an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year's supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the num- ber of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. The only known large deposits of talc in Alabama occur near Winterboro, Talladega County. Preliminary examinations were made, and work by the Bureau of Mines was recommended. The deposits were investigated to determine the amount and grade of talc present and to search for new talc deposits in the general area. Seventy-five holes, totaling 3370.4 feet, were drilled with Government-owned core drills from August 1, 1948, to February 11, 1949, and 27 samples were taken for assay. This report presents the factual data disclosed by drilling and the results of beneficiation of the talc.

"One-phase of the accident prevention program of the Bureau of Mines is the determination of the explosion hazards of various combustible gases and vapors encountered,mining and allied industries and the development of means and methods of eliminating them.Gasoline is foremost among the combustible-liquid's as to quantity used and variety of applications in industry, It is a chief contributor to the causes of fires and explosions, taking an enormous yearly toll in property damage and considerable loss of lives.The results presented in this report evaluate the effect of various gaseous inert substances, which owing to their chemical composition, should be of considerable value in the prevention of gasoline fires and explosions. The substances investigated are as follows: Nitrogen (N2), automobile exhaust gas (85 percent N2 + 15 percent CO2), carbon dioxide(CO2), dichlorodifluoromethane (CCl2F2-Freon-12), trichloremenofluoromethane (CC13F-Freon-11), and dichloromonofluoromethane (CHCl2F-Freon-21).The general term ""gasoline"" designates a combustible liquid of such characteristics as to give satisfactory operation without preheating in spark-ignition-type internal-combustion engine. It comprises a complex hydrocarbon mixture having a limiting distillation range and produced commercially by distilling or ""cracking"" crude petroleum or other various petroleum stocks. Small proportions of other substances may be incorporated in the gasoline to enhance its antiknock properties or operating characteristics in internal-combustion engines and to increase its stability during storage, transportation, and use.It is thus seen that gasoline may have rather wide variations of chemical and physical properties, and it would: appear that the results of any investigation dealing with one particular gasoline might not be applicable to other types. However, as indicated by the results given in this report, the inflammable properties of different gasolines at normal atmospheric temperatures are influenced largely the mars volatile hydrocarbons containing 5, 6, 7 carbon atoms- in the molecule, and that the heavier constituent of higher molecular weight have a minor influence on the inflammable properties at ordinary temperatures."

Any discussion of growth and future requirements has to begin with people--both their number and their needs. Both have been rising ever since any American can remember. Together, the number of people, which has been increasing rather modestly, and their wants and desires for material things, which have been increasing very sharply, seemed to have comprised a growth imperative in mineral consumption in the United States, especially during the last several decades. While the Nation's birthrate is now well below the replacement rate and still falling, the built-in momentum of the post-World War II population boom will continue to be felt well into the 21st century. Even using the modest projection of a 0.8 percent yearly increase, we are still looking at the possibility of 265 million Americans being around by Year 2000.

Chrysotile asbestos occurs in many counties in California, and a small production had been reported at times, but development of deposits had been disappointing. A reconnaissance survey by the Bureau of Mines indicated that several deposits in the serpentine belt in Shasta, Trinity, and Siskiyou Counties might contain enough asbestos of filler grade to supply the growing demand on the west coast. Accordingly from 1956 to 1958 parts of the Mount Eddy and Shasta View deposits were investigated by trenching and diamond drilling to determine their potential. The work comprised construction of roads, bulldozer trenching, excavation of areas for diamond drilling, sampling, and upping. The trenches were excavated to expose the surface extent of some of the asbestos-bearing areas, To determine the downward continuation of asbestos-bearing sections and to secure samples for test purposes, six diamond drill holes, totaling 1,738 linear feet, were drilled in two selected areas. The trenching and core-drilling indicated that the asbestos-bearing material occurs as ribs and lenses of varying thicknesses in a broad belt of serpentine, about 600 feet wide and several miles long,

The U.S. Bureau of Mines applied its mine fire diagnostic method to an abandoned anthracite mine fire site in Carbondale, Lackawanna County, PA. The technique to locate fires in abandoned coal mines and coal refuse piles includes the determination of hydrocarbon concentrations in mine gases, the imposition of an underground gas flow direction, and use of a surface mapping method, to define heated and cold zones in underground coal strata. The heated zones at Carbondale were characterized by elevated methane concentrations. The results of 25 communication tests were analyzed to define 2 large (approximately 100 by 250 ft) and 5 small, isolated heated zones. An approximate correlation existed between the location of the heated zones and areas of anomalous snow melt. The correlation between the results of the diagnostic test and subsurface temperatures was not significant.

A review is given of the nomenclature, sources, imports, statistics, common methods of preparation, and testing of mineral pigments. A description of the Deer Park-Spokane colored-clay district and the laboratory methods of preparation of these colored clays, others, and siennas follows. The mineral pigments were prepared by washing or grinding the original material as received and by calcination of the yellow ocher and brown sienna with and without manganese dioxide to produce red, brown, and black colors. These prepared powders were tested for fineness, oil absorption, and color as compared with well-known brands of commercial pigments. Similar tests were made with several basalt red clays occurring in the neighborhood of Salem, Oreg., and Kalama, Eatonville, and Clay City, Wash. The color particularly was studied, since this property is the most important commercial characteristic of the minerals. PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION Since the development of the clay industry in the Pacific Northwest, some curiosity and interest have been aroused by the red and yellow clay or ocherouslike material that has often been found associated with the commercial clay deposits. These include the red and yellow "paint pots" near Deer Park and Spokane in eastern Washington, a red clay at Clay City, another close to Eatonville in western Washington, and red basalt earths near Salem, Oreg., and along the Columbia River near Kalama, Wash. Several companies have been organized to produce pigment colors from two of these deposits but have either discontinued or never started operations.

In the United States water pollution resulting from mining activities has long been recognized as a major environmental problem Mine drainage pollution results from many types of mining activities and includes both physical (i e , sedimentation) and chemical (i e , acidification, metal contamination, etc ) pollutants Active and abandoned surface and underground mines, mineral processing plants, mine and processing plant waste disposal areas, haulage roads, and tailing ponds are typical sources of mine related water pollution (130) One of the most serious pollution problems arising from mining activities is acid mine drainage resulting from the chemical reaction of sulfide minerals (commonly iron sulfides) and air in the presence of water Acid mine drainage is commonly associated with coal and hard rock mining areas in the United States In general the more serious and extensive acid mine drainage problems exist in the more humid coal regions east of the Mississippi River (11) In 1964 the U S Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service, reported that acid mine drainage adversely affected fish and wildlife habitat in 9,477 kilometers (5,890 miles) of streams and 6,062 hectares (14,967 acres) of impoundments in 20 states in the United States (64) Of the total affected waters, coal mining operations accounted for 97 percent of the acid mine drainage pollution reported for streams and 93 percent of that reported for impoundments In 1970 more than 19,308 kilometers (12,000 miles) of streams in the United States were reportedly significantly degraded by mining related pollution (130) Of the total affected kilometers, 16,920 kilometers (10,516 miles) or approximately 88 percent were located in the Appalachian coal region (Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, eastern Kentucky, Tennessee, Maryland, and Alabama) In addition, more than 965 kilometers (600 miles) of streams reportedly were degraded by coal mining in states in the Illinois, Western Interior, and Rocky Mountain coal regions The remaining portion of the stream pollution resulted from the mining of (1) copper (california, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wyoming), (2) lead and zinc (Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, and Tennessee), (3) uranium (Rocky Mountain States), (4) iron (Lake Superior iron region), (5) sand and gravel (all states), (6) phosphate (Florida and other states), (7) gold (Alaska), (8) bauxite and barite (Arkansas), and (9) molybdenum, gold, and other metals (Colorado) Abandoned mines and abandoned mine waste disposal areas contribute a large portion of the total pollution resulting from mining activities Numerous abandoned underground mines are located throughout the United States and many are discharging mine drainage pollutants In 1966 the U S Bureau of Mines estimated that more than 88,000 inactive and abandoned underground mines were in existance (126) A listing of these mines by state is presented in Table 1 0-1 More recent estimates indicate that this list is incomplete In Colorado alone there is

The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has been studying actively for the past several years the flow of natural gas through high-pressure pipe lines. This report deals with that part of the study involving the design off pipe-line systems consisting of lines laid parallel to each other. The lines are referred to as the original line and the parallel line. The paralleling line may or may not extend the entire length of the original line; however, the parallel line is connected at its two ends to the original line. As a result of the large expansion of the natural-gas industry almost all markets within economic distance from the developed gas fields have at least one pipe line supplying them with natural gas. Small increases in the consumers' demand for natural gas can be met usually by increasing operating pressures, but any marked increase in demand necessitates paralleling sections of the existing systems.
